• 2:28
Speaker 5: Pepper, Hello you, sir, I'm great, thanks for having me on.
• 2:31
Speaker 3: Welcome to the new digs here.
• 2:33
  Speaker 5: This is awesome.
• 2:33
Speaker 3: This is so cool. It is awesome. We're it'll be
• 2:36
Speaker 3: even better when we learn how to operate everything. You know.
• 2:38
Speaker 3: Also have Audrey Kahn, who is a small business liaison
• 2:42
Speaker 3: for the city. Welcome to the show. Hi, Dave, thank
• 2:44
Speaker 3: you for being here making your debut on the show.
• 2:47
  Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm stoked. I'm a big fan.
• 2:48
Speaker 3: All right, Well, you got Emmett Pepper here, so Emma,
• 2:51
Speaker 3: we will walk you through anything that you that you
• 2:53
Speaker 3: don't know. Sergeant Pepper, I'm sure you've never heard that before.
• 2:58
Speaker 3: Doctors to doctor doctor Parker's but before we get to
• 3:02
Speaker 3: Audrey to talk about some small business things going on
• 3:05
Speaker 3: in Charles. I want to ask you about city council.
• 3:08
Speaker 3: What's going on in city council. You got a meeting tonight,
• 3:11
Speaker 3: you guys, what are you taking a look at. Let's
• 3:13
Speaker 3: get to that first.
• 3:14
Speaker 5: Oh, well, city council we have there's no city council
• 3:18
Speaker 5: meetings tonight tomorrow. We have a mandated one that we
• 3:22
Speaker 5: have to do for like five minutes to do something
• 3:24
Speaker 5: with taxes. But there is actually a city council meeting tonight.
• 3:28
Speaker 5: That's not the full council, it's a committee meeting. And
• 3:30
Speaker 5: the issue that I seem to keep talking about a
• 3:32
Speaker 5: lot in the last couple of months has been street sweeping,
• 3:35
Speaker 5: and so we're looking at the ways just to do
• 3:37
Speaker 5: that in the best way. I've spent a lot more
• 3:40
Speaker 5: time than I ever thought I would on this issue,
• 3:41
Speaker 5: but I did want to. I want to get it right,
• 3:43
Speaker 5: and so there's a little bit of a sunk cost
• 3:45
Speaker 5: fallacy here where I've already spent enough time and I
• 3:47
Speaker 5: want to finish it through and get it to what's.
• 3:49
  Speaker 3: A big I don't want to say controversy, that's not
• 3:51
Speaker 3: the right word, but what's the big discussion about about sweeping? Yeah,
• 3:54
Speaker 3: because I know we've had text of the show about
• 3:56
Speaker 3: I had the mayor on on the show last Monday
• 3:58
Speaker 3: and we had several tech about it.
• 4:00
Speaker 5: What's the yeah, I mean, I think so we so
• 4:03
Speaker 5: the East End of Charleston has weekly street sweeping. We
• 4:05
Speaker 5: don't have that anywhere else in the city because because
• 4:09
Speaker 5: we also are in the East End have and it's
• 4:11
Speaker 5: where it happened a little bit. They also have parking
• 4:15
Speaker 5: enforcements to make sure that that's a bit that's possible.
• 4:18
Speaker 5: So some people say, well, why do we you know,
• 4:21
Speaker 5: why does that happen? And you know, and we've I've
• 4:23
Speaker 5: put a lot of work into it, and you know,
• 4:25
Speaker 5: I think basically where we are right now is seventy
• 4:27
Speaker 5: eighty percent of the of the populace that lives there
• 4:30
Speaker 5: and is affected by that likes having it because they're
• 4:33
Speaker 5: concerned that because there's so much on street parking. I
• 4:36
  Speaker 5: personally don't have a driveway. A lot of people don't
• 4:37
Speaker 5: have driveways, you know that they're not able to sweep it. So,
• 4:41
Speaker 5: you know, so we most people want that, but there's
• 4:44
Speaker 5: some people, of course, who you know, there's there's a
• 4:47
Speaker 5: different side of different issues on every issue exactly. But
• 4:50
Speaker 5: you know, so one of the thing that I the
• 4:52
Speaker 5: bill I introduced is just to so getting into the
• 4:55
Speaker 5: walky weeds of it. What this sweeping on one side
• 4:58
Speaker 5: of the street happens at noon to two the other
• 4:59
Speaker 5: side on a noon or just to harmonize that, to
• 5:02
Speaker 5: make it new to two for both sides. And so
• 5:04
  Speaker 5: that's that's what we're That's the exciting thing that we're
• 5:06
  Speaker 5: talking about today.
• 5:07
Speaker 3: That has taken a lot of time. It is amazing though.
• 5:09
Speaker 3: And when I have the mayor on she talks about this,
• 5:11
Speaker 3: and I would say the mayors and council people and
• 5:14
Speaker 3: other municipalities that probably say the same thing. You know,
• 5:17
Speaker 3: what really gets people going? And she talks about this
• 5:20
Speaker 3: as us the mayor of Hurricane and Saint Albans is
• 5:23
Speaker 3: trick or treating, Christmas parades, you know, and things of
• 5:27
Speaker 3: that nature. Fireworks, that's what gets people going. But hey,
• 5:30
Speaker 3: at least they're involved, right, that's right. Andrey Khan small
• 5:34
Speaker 3: business liaison with City Charleston. Tell us about what you do.
• 5:37
Speaker 6: Sure, So the mayor and city council created my position
• 5:41
Speaker 6: a couple of years ago in partnership with the city
• 5:43
Speaker 6: collector as well to just kind of create a person
• 5:47
Speaker 6: who could be hands on with local businesses and whether
• 5:51
Speaker 6: that's something which is me connecting them with local resources
• 5:56
Speaker 6: all the way to the less slashy, less exciting stuff
• 5:58
Speaker 6: like getting their business sins or filing paperwork or taxes
• 6:01
Speaker 6: and fees and things like that. So but I'm kind
• 6:04
Speaker 6: of a boost on the ground person that's out talking
• 6:06
Speaker 6: to the businesses. I go and check and see what
• 6:08
Speaker 6: they might need, maybe something that they need from the city.
• 6:11
Speaker 6: I can take information back to administration say hey, this
• 6:14
Speaker 6: business needs this, how can we help? And so yeah,
• 6:18
Speaker 6: that's kind of that's a five hundred foot view of
• 6:22
Speaker 6: what I do. But I I get to talk to
• 6:24
Speaker 6: a lot of the businesses in the city and get
• 6:26
Speaker 6: to know them. And the past couple of years have
• 6:28
Speaker 6: been really exciting because I'm the first person to hold
• 6:29
  Speaker 6: the position.
• 6:30
Speaker 3: And talk about the state of small and neither one
• 6:33
Speaker 3: of you an accountcil when you could jump in here
• 6:35
Speaker 3: if you want to the state of small business in Charleston.
• 6:37
Speaker 6: Sure, So that was one of the reasons why we
• 6:40
Speaker 6: were excited to come on today because Charleston really is
• 6:42
Speaker 6: a business friendly City and there are tons of local
• 6:45
Speaker 6: resources that are there for businesses, but as far as
• 6:48
Speaker 6: the state of local businesses goes, I mean, I'm constantly
• 6:51
Speaker 6: at ribbon cuttings and grand openings and anniversaries. I even
• 6:55
Speaker 6: have a ribbon cutting grand opening today on the West
• 6:58
Speaker 6: side for a business called the Wine Down.
• 7:01
Speaker 3: I've heard about that. It's like like a wine bar.
• 7:04
Speaker 6: Yeah, so that's going to be really exciting because we
• 7:06
Speaker 6: are about to roll out our Capital City Sipping stroll
• 7:10
Speaker 6: in that area in the Elk City area, so we're
• 7:12
Speaker 6: going to have a poda down there, so that'll be
• 7:14
Speaker 6: perfect for this business. So yeah, I mean that's just
• 7:17
Speaker 6: an example of what a day to day might look like,
• 7:19
Speaker 6: is just attending a ribbon cutting and you know, showing
• 7:23
Speaker 6: up for those businesses that might be new or maybe
• 7:25
Speaker 6: they're celebrating a ten year anniversary. Actually there's going to
• 7:28
Speaker 6: be a thirty year anniversary for Sam's Uptown Cafe this year,
• 7:32
Speaker 6: so any that's that's kind of the range, right, So
• 7:34
Speaker 6: brand new business, the Wine Down, all the way to
• 7:36
Speaker 6: a thirty year business.
• 7:38
Speaker 3: And when you talk about the Elk City district over there,
• 7:41
Speaker 3: I mean it's been really and we've talked about it
• 7:43
Speaker 3: on the show a lot Audrey and the councilman. It's
• 7:46
Speaker 3: been an area that's seen a lot of growth, especially
• 7:49
Speaker 3: in the restaurant sector of things.
• 7:51
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 7:51
  Speaker 3: Absolutely, So.
• 7:52
Speaker 6: We have Sergio's and then he opened Albuquerque recently. We're
• 7:55
Speaker 6: about to have an Appalachian mercantile place called Latcha that's
• 7:59
Speaker 6: going to open down there. We had a salon that
• 8:01
Speaker 6: opened recently a few months ago. Yeah, just in my
• 8:05
Speaker 6: two years since I've been here, I've seen a lot
• 8:07
Speaker 6: of growth and things happening down in that particular area.
• 8:09
Speaker 3: Counselmen follow up on what she said about the state
• 8:12
Speaker 3: of small business in Charleston. Your opinion, Yeah, I mean.
• 8:16
  Speaker 5: There's a lot there's there's a lot of people interested
• 8:17
  Speaker 5: in coming here. There's a lot of there's We're doing
• 8:19
Speaker 5: everything we can to to help them. I mean that
• 8:22
Speaker 5: was one of my when I worked with the mayor
• 8:24
Speaker 5: and established the position, is that you know, there's a
• 8:28
Speaker 5: lot that someone wants to start a new business. It's
• 8:30
Speaker 5: not intuitive necessarily some of the things that you have
• 8:33
  Speaker 5: to go through.
• 8:33
Speaker 3: And so you know, someone who's.
• 8:35
Speaker 5: Really good at, you know, doing whatever their business does
• 8:37
Speaker 5: doesn't mean they're necessarily is good at the other stuff.
• 8:39
Speaker 5: So yeah, this is that's the goal is to kind
• 8:42
Speaker 5: of like shepher them through that process, get everything going
• 8:44
Speaker 5: so that they don't find out years later they forgot
• 8:46
Speaker 5: to do something and then it's more expensive to fix
• 8:48
Speaker 5: and and so that's that's the goal is, you know,
• 8:51
Speaker 5: let's make sure we you know, got all the licenses
• 8:53
Speaker 5: and got all the registrations and stuff and and have
• 8:55
Speaker 5: it planned out so that there's no problems going down
• 8:57
  Speaker 5: the road.
• 8:57
Speaker 3: And that's a very good point, uh, that you bring
• 9:00
Speaker 3: up because I learned this in my days in state government.
• 9:02
Speaker 3: That's kind of one of the jobs that I had
• 9:04
Speaker 3: within the Secretary of State's office was I I worked
• 9:07
Speaker 3: with a lot of businesses through the business one stop
• 9:09
Speaker 3: center there. It was on Washington Street at the time.
• 9:13
Speaker 3: And and the issue sometimes we would have entrepreneurs that
• 9:17
Speaker 3: would come in that were so good at what they did,
• 9:19
Speaker 3: whether it was photography or or you know whatever, but
• 9:23
Speaker 3: they weren't always as good at at handling the licensing
• 9:28
Speaker 3: and the certifications that are needed and getting this person
• 9:31
Speaker 3: in that person. But also I think sometimes businesses, oddly
• 9:35
Speaker 3: you can speak to this, I think that they don't
• 9:37
Speaker 3: know what sort of help is available out there to
• 9:41
Speaker 3: I mean, I'm a big believer in the small in
• 9:43
Speaker 3: the SBA, I'm a big believer in the in the
• 9:46
Speaker 3: organizations like that Will Miller and his group, you know
• 9:49
Speaker 3: that do great things in the city, not I mean
• 9:51
Speaker 3: with within the state. There's there's a lot of help
• 9:54
Speaker 3: out there, a lot of counseling and a lot of
• 9:56
Speaker 3: and a lot of that for businesses. There's no charge.
• 9:58
Speaker 6: Yeah, absolutely, the free services are what's really cool because
• 10:02
Speaker 6: just like you said, Will Miller, I mean the SBDC,
• 10:04
Speaker 6: the Small Business Development Center has a location here in Charleston,
• 10:08
Speaker 6: Like you can walk up and talk to someone and
• 10:09
Speaker 6: sometimes that is you know a little bit of red
• 10:12
Speaker 6: tape where someone is trying to call and they're trying
• 10:14
Speaker 6: to find a person. I mean, there are places embedded
• 10:16
Speaker 6: right here in Charleston that have offices that you can
• 10:19
Speaker 6: walk up to and you're talking Charleston, Aarry Alliance that
• 10:22
Speaker 6: has a business incubator where you're talking Workforce West Virginia,
• 10:25
Speaker 6: which actually has a free version of Indeed, so they
• 10:27
Speaker 6: help job seekers and employers. You have Base Innovations, which
• 10:32
Speaker 6: helps veterans in their families who are trying to open businesses,
• 10:35
Speaker 6: and like you said, the business one stop location. I mean,
• 10:37
Speaker 6: there's a litany of resources here Advantage Valley, like I
• 10:40
Speaker 6: could go on with the people that I work with.
• 10:42
Speaker 5: And the good thing is that people don't have to
• 10:43
Speaker 5: remember all that that she just said. Living in the
• 10:47
Speaker 5: city of Charleston, just call Audrey and then she'll help
• 10:49
Speaker 5: you get I's got the list.
• 10:50
Speaker 3: So if somebody is thinking about starting a business, I
• 10:53
Speaker 3: mean again, sometimes people have skills set and they think, man,
• 10:56
Speaker 3: I could do this coffee shop, whatever the case may be,
• 11:00
Speaker 3: and then they reach out to you. I want to
• 11:02
Speaker 3: start a business. Let's call it Dave's Tanning, Salon and taxidermy. Okay,
• 11:09
Speaker 3: all right, all right, so I want to start a business. Okay,
• 11:13
Speaker 3: I make that phone call to you. What I just
• 11:15
Speaker 3: I say, I need help? Sure, what do you do?
• 11:18
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 11:18
Speaker 6: So the first thing we want to do is check
• 11:20
Speaker 6: I'll get you a business registration. So we want to
• 11:22
Speaker 6: look at your starting your business license process. Because I'll
• 11:26
Speaker 6: send you over to the development services team. You can
• 11:28
Speaker 6: make sure that your business is in the proper zone
• 11:30
Speaker 6: or district. And then actually there is at the City
• 11:34
Speaker 6: Service Center sort of our own version of a one
• 11:37
Speaker 6: stop location where you start with development services, you find
• 11:39
Speaker 6: out your business, where you want to put your business.
• 11:41
Speaker 6: You're in the right district, you can schedule your building inspection.
• 11:44
Speaker 6: Over there, you can get your business registration application, and
• 11:47
Speaker 6: then that's where you will return to turn everything in.
• 11:50
Speaker 6: So we would start there, and then for Dave's tanning
• 11:53
Speaker 6: and taxidermy, we would talk about things.
• 11:57
Speaker 5: I know absolutely nothing about it. I think I've seen
• 11:59
Speaker 5: one of those before. Its just somewhere in the state.
• 12:02
  Speaker 3: It's a southern West Virginia thing. That's what we're doing
• 12:06
Speaker 3: in southern West Virginia.
• 12:08
Speaker 6: So yeah, So I would also connect you with local resources.
• 12:10
Speaker 6: So it sounds like you might want to talk to
• 12:12
Speaker 6: a business coach at the SBDC. Maybe you need to
• 12:14
Speaker 6: go through the University of Charleston's Accelerator program and let
• 12:17
Speaker 6: them teach you how to do some back end things
• 12:19
Speaker 6: like taxes or whatever. So I can immediately start you
• 12:23
Speaker 6: with resources, and then we can also do the unfund
• 12:26
Speaker 6: paperwork stuff and get through that as well, so that
• 12:28
  Speaker 6: you're set up.
• 12:29
Speaker 3: All right, counselmen, before we let you guys go, what
• 12:33
Speaker 3: what would you say to people that are thinking about
• 12:36
Speaker 3: starting a business. Why should they choose Charleston to do
• 12:38
Speaker 3: it because there's you know, and we had a lot
• 12:40
Speaker 3: of great locations they could but why should they choose
• 12:42
Speaker 3: Charleston in your opinion.
• 12:44
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think I think Charleston has an
• 12:46
Speaker 5: advantage because there are there is a lot of foot traffic.
• 12:49
Speaker 5: Art population I think doubles every day, you know, during
• 12:52
Speaker 5: the during the weekday. So there's a lot of people here,
• 12:54
Speaker 5: you know, and we we have we have the support.
• 12:57
Speaker 5: We're willing to do what we can to help people,
• 12:59
Speaker 5: you know, make it, make it happen. There's there are vacancies,
• 13:02
Speaker 5: there are places for people to go.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: All right, how do they reach you?
• 13:06
  Speaker 8: Sure?
• 13:06
Speaker 6: So my office number, you would just call the regular
• 13:09
Speaker 6: city number and then my extension, So that's three zero
• 13:12
Speaker 6: four three four eight eight thousand extension three zero three.
• 13:15
Speaker 6: But the best way to get me would probably be email,
• 13:17
Speaker 6: because like I said, I am boots on the ground.

Speaker 3: I'll start with you because I've been told you were
• 17:11
Speaker 3: the talker of the two. I think he said that.
• 17:15
Speaker 3: I think your husband said that. With all due respect,
• 17:19
Speaker 3: tell us about your son.
• 17:20
Speaker 7: Sure so, our son Maddox Potter. He recently passed away
• 17:27
Speaker 7: in January from a cancer called rabdomio sarcoma. Before he
• 17:34
Speaker 7: was diagnosed, he was an active kid. He was a
• 17:40
Speaker 7: pretty accomplished junior golfer. He had been playing golf since
• 17:45
Speaker 7: the age of four. He started with a single lesson
• 17:48
Speaker 7: at the first t of West Virginia and then from
• 17:51
Speaker 7: there it just kind of parlayed into something that just
• 17:54
Speaker 7: just captured his his spirit. I don't know what it was,
• 17:57
Speaker 7: but it was something that allowed him to spend a
• 18:00
Speaker 7: lot of time with his dad, and he became a
• 18:03
Speaker 7: pretty good golfer and in ninth grade. In the fall
• 18:10
Speaker 7: of twenty twenty three, he was starting his freshman golf
• 18:13
Speaker 7: season at George Washington High School, playing a lot of golf,
• 18:17
Speaker 7: practicing a lot, a lot of matches, a lot of
• 18:20
Speaker 7: time on the simulator, a lot of time with the
• 18:22
Speaker 7: driving range, and he started complaining of back pain. And
• 18:27
Speaker 7: it's pretty easy at that point to just not brush
• 18:31
Speaker 7: it off but assume that it was from golf.
• 18:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, golf growing pains. I mean, that's not uncommon.
• 18:37
Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right, just from all the swinging he was
• 18:39
Speaker 7: doing from carrying his golf clubs, and so we went
• 18:45
Speaker 7: through a few different modalities to try to get him
• 18:50
Speaker 7: some relief. At you know, at first it was able
• 18:53
Speaker 7: to be managed with some advil. I think we did
• 18:56
Speaker 7: some steroids, thinking maybe it was just inflammation, some physical therapy,
• 19:02
Speaker 7: a visit to the chiropractor, and then eventually it got
• 19:07
Speaker 7: to the point where it was just nothing was really helping.
• 19:10
Speaker 7: It was getting debilitating, and that's what prompted a visit
• 19:15
Speaker 7: to his pediatrician and a recommendation for some MRIs, and
• 19:20
Speaker 7: then things just happened in quick succession after that MRI's
• 19:27
Speaker 7: major back surgery to remove a large tumor, a transfer
• 19:30
Speaker 7: to Cincinnati Children's and a stage four rahabdomyosarcoma diagnosis.
• 19:37
Speaker 3: And how old was he He was.
• 19:38
Speaker 7: Fifteen when he was diagnosed. So we spent a year
• 19:44
Speaker 7: traveling to and from Cincinnati for his treatments in I
• 19:53
Speaker 7: want to say in May. He started his treatments in
• 19:56
Speaker 7: December of twenty twenty three. By May of twenty twenty four,
• 19:59
Speaker 7: it became apparent that the standard regimen for his cancer
• 20:04
Speaker 7: was not given us the results that we needed, so
• 20:09
Speaker 7: we had to change things. He did full brain and
• 20:13
Speaker 7: spine proton therapy, he did traditional photon radiation. At the
• 20:19
Speaker 7: end of the thirteen months that from his diagnosis to
• 20:23
Speaker 7: his passing, he had gone through eight different chemotherapy treatments
• 20:28
Speaker 7: or eight different protocols radiation. He'd had a surgery, and
• 20:33
Speaker 7: it just became really apparent that there was nothing left
• 20:37
Speaker 7: that was going to stop the disease. Maybe something that
• 20:42
Speaker 7: could keep it from growing as rapidly, but nothing left
• 20:50
Speaker 7: that they could do to cure him.
• 20:53
Speaker 3: How rare was this particular form of cancer.
• 20:57
Speaker 7: So when he was originally diagnosed, I believe the oncologists
• 21:02
Speaker 7: told us that there are approximately three hundred and fifty
• 21:06
Speaker 7: cases per year that they see, so I guess that
• 21:10
Speaker 7: averages about one a day. I think a lot of
• 21:13
Speaker 7: times when people think of childhood cancer, they think more
• 21:17
Speaker 7: leukemia or brain tumors. I think those are much more prevalent.
• 21:22
Speaker 7: But his was rabdomyosarcoma, and I had only ever heard
• 21:28
Speaker 7: of one other child with that. Coincidentally, it was the
• 21:34
Speaker 7: daughter of a girl I went to high school with,
• 21:35
Speaker 7: and she was the only other child I'd ever heard
• 21:37
Speaker 7: of in that scenario. So I knew right off the
• 21:41
Speaker 7: bat that we probably needed to make our way to
• 21:46
Speaker 7: a more specialized treatment center, and so that's what prompted
• 21:50
Speaker 7: us to head to Cincinnati.
• 21:52
Speaker 3: Children's talk about I know you said he was an
• 21:55
Speaker 3: avid golfer. I'm familiar with his story, even though I've
• 21:58
Speaker 3: never met you. Folks told today familiary story. He was
• 22:01
Speaker 3: a huge Buffalo Bills fan. Talk about what kind of
• 22:06
  Speaker 3: kid he was.
• 22:09
Speaker 7: Maddox was a reserved kid. He was quiet, he was shy,
• 22:18
Speaker 7: he was all eyes on him was something that he
• 22:23
Speaker 7: just was probably a nightmare to him, like everybody looking
• 22:26
Speaker 7: at him. He was very well behaved. Teachers always just
• 22:35
Speaker 7: you know, they would tell us like, he's just so kind,
• 22:38
Speaker 7: He's so good in school, he's so well behaved. He
• 22:41
Speaker 7: made great grades. He truly was. I think he was
• 22:44
Speaker 7: a very easy kid to parent. Now, granted, we were
• 22:51
Speaker 7: only blessed with sixteen years with him, so we never
• 22:55
Speaker 7: really got the opportunity to get into those types of
• 22:57
Speaker 7: things where he's driving alone and going out a lot
• 22:59
Speaker 7: and doing things like that. So that we never got
• 23:03
Speaker 7: that opportunity. Who's to say what would have what would
• 23:06
Speaker 7: have transpired, But for the time that we had him,
• 23:09
Speaker 7: he was a very good boy. He he liked being home.
• 23:12
Speaker 7: He preferred being in his own space. He was never
• 23:16
Speaker 7: one of those kids that needed to be part of
• 23:18
Speaker 7: a crowd. He didn't have any type of fear of
• 23:21
Speaker 7: missing out or anything.
• 23:22
Speaker 3: He just and he was.
• 23:24
Speaker 7: Incredibly smart, incredibly intelligent. And I think that's one of
• 23:31
Speaker 7: the things I think about the most is I don't
• 23:34
Speaker 7: think all of his potential died with him. I think
• 23:38
Speaker 7: very much so that some of the potential that he had,
• 23:43
Speaker 7: it's mind and Davy's responsibility to carry that on, and
• 23:47
Speaker 7: we will, and that's that's our goal. But his intelligence
• 23:49
Speaker 7: and his mind, you know, I don't I don't have that.
• 23:52
Speaker 7: I can't do anything with that. So that was something,
• 23:56
Speaker 7: you know, that's something that I think was one of
• 23:57
Speaker 7: the most heartbreaking things to me, is oh boy, what
• 24:00
Speaker 7: what could he have done?
• 24:04
Speaker 3: Talk about the outpouring of support from the community, because,
• 24:09
Speaker 3: as I said, I was familiar with the story from
• 24:11
Speaker 3: all the media coverage that it got in the paper
• 24:14
Speaker 3: and radio and television and whatever. Even though Charleston is
• 24:19
Speaker 3: a larger area compared to some areas of the state,
• 24:22
Speaker 3: still got a bit of a small town feel, and
• 24:24
Speaker 3: the community really really rallied around this young man. And
• 24:29
Speaker 3: continue to rally around him and you guys and what
• 24:33
Speaker 3: you're doing now talk about that community support.
• 24:35
  Speaker 11: That's right.
• 24:36
Speaker 7: So when Maddox was first in Cincinnati and was first diagnosed,
• 24:39
Speaker 7: I'll never forget Davey made a Facebook post and it
• 24:45
Speaker 7: had to do with our youngest son. But what he
• 24:47
Speaker 7: said was, you know, Brooks played a heck of a
• 24:49
Speaker 7: basketball game tonight for his big brother, Maddix Potter, and
• 24:52
Speaker 7: he tagged us at Cincinnati Children's and I remember thinking, oh,
• 24:55
Speaker 7: I don't think I'm ready for that, because then you
• 24:57
Speaker 7: start getting text messages and questions. And his response to
• 25:01
Speaker 7: me was, well, I think the more prayers the better,
• 25:05
Speaker 7: and so that kind of flipped my mindset. I was like,
• 25:08
Speaker 7: you know what, You're exactly right, You're exactly right. You
• 25:11
Speaker 7: know that's what we need. We need prayers and we
• 25:13
Speaker 7: need support. And from there I just I started making simple,
• 25:19
Speaker 7: updated posts about his progress and what he was doing.
• 25:22
Speaker 7: And I think to your point, Charleston is a larger community.
• 25:27
Speaker 7: It does have a small town feel, but also within
• 25:31
Speaker 7: this city, we were blessed to have other smaller pockets
• 25:36
Speaker 7: of support too. Golf. The golf community really stepped up
• 25:40
Speaker 7: and rallied around us John Adams G. W. Holtes Elementary,
• 25:46
Speaker 7: where he went to school, where his you know, younger
• 25:48
Speaker 7: brother is and he has another younger brother at John Adams.
• 25:54
Speaker 7: All of these little my work, his work, you know,
• 25:58
Speaker 7: everybody just like they stepped as a whole. But like
• 26:01
Speaker 7: within the community, there were also little pockets that supported
• 26:06
Speaker 7: us too, and so it has been extraordinary. I think
• 26:10
Speaker 7: that's the only way that I can describe it. I
• 26:12
Speaker 7: know that people that don't live in West Virginia have
• 26:17
Speaker 7: a particular view of this state. Yeah, I understand that. However,
• 26:24
Speaker 7: you don't find better people than in West Virginia because
• 26:27
Speaker 7: when they tell you they are praying for you, they
• 26:31
Speaker 7: mean it. I mean they genuinely are. They are going
• 26:35
Speaker 7: back to their churches and their communities and they're putting
• 26:37
Speaker 7: you on prayer lists and they're gathering up donations for you.
• 26:41
Speaker 7: I mean they mean it. So we have been incredibly blessed.
• 26:45
Speaker 7: And Maddox was very very blessed in his short life.
• 26:49
Speaker 3: Talk about going forward. What are you doing? I mean,
• 26:51
Speaker 3: you got this foundation that you're doing. You're doing you said,
• 26:54
Speaker 3: and these were your words, Jen, You said that the
• 26:58
Speaker 3: kind of person that he was did not pass away
• 27:02
Speaker 3: with him. The spirit is still here. Talk about what
• 27:06
Speaker 3: you are doing going forward.
• 27:08
Speaker 7: With this, That's right. So our goal with the Maddox
• 27:12
Speaker 7: Potter Foundation is it's threefold. So we want to help
• 27:18
Speaker 7: other families who unfortunately are going to be in the
• 27:22
Speaker 7: same position that we are in. You know, there are
• 27:26
Speaker 7: going to be new kids diagnosed every day. There are
• 27:29
Speaker 7: going to be new families where the rug is yanked
• 27:32
Speaker 7: completely out from under them, and it's disorienting at first,
• 27:36
Speaker 7: and it really takes a long time to get your
• 27:37
Speaker 7: feet back underneath you. So we want to offer support
• 27:41
Speaker 7: in any way we can in that regard. We also
• 27:44
Speaker 7: want to further sarcoma research. There are one hundred different
• 27:49
Speaker 7: subtypes of sarcomas and a lot of these research centers
• 27:53
Speaker 7: depend on private funding. So that's one of our goals.
• 27:58
Speaker 7: Science just wasn't It just wasn't formatix, and that's the
• 28:01
Speaker 7: bottom line. It's not ready for a lot of these kids.
• 28:03
Speaker 7: And so that's the holy grail for every type of cancer,
• 28:07
Speaker 7: is fine the cure. We also want to encourage the
• 28:12
Speaker 7: growth of junior golf. Like I said, so much of
• 28:15
Speaker 7: Maddox's life was spent on the golf course. A lot
• 28:19
Speaker 7: of his character qualities were developed on the golf course,
• 28:24
Speaker 7: and golf is also a fantastic sport for kids who
• 28:29
Speaker 7: are going through cancer treatment. When you're going through these treatments,
• 28:32
Speaker 7: you have periods where you're immunosuppressed and you can't be
• 28:35
Speaker 7: around large crowds. You can be out on the golf course.
• 28:38
Speaker 7: It's just you and maybe your dad or your mom,
• 28:40
Speaker 7: or a buddy with you, or even you by yourself.
• 28:43
Speaker 7: When you're going through cancer treatments, you also have periods
• 28:47
Speaker 7: of time where you are very anemic, and you also
• 28:50
Speaker 7: have very low platelets, which puts you at a big
• 28:53
Speaker 7: risk for excessive bleeding. So you can't play any type
• 28:56
Speaker 7: of contact sport. You couldn't play basketball or football or hockey,
• 29:00
Speaker 7: could play golf. So that the golf piece is because
• 29:04
Speaker 7: number one, it was important to Mattics, but number two,
• 29:07
Speaker 7: it can be a wonderful way for these kids to
• 29:10
Speaker 7: still get out and be active and have you know,
• 29:14
Speaker 7: when they're feeling like it, just you know, good physical activity,
• 29:18
Speaker 7: be out in the sun, get vitamin D, whatever it
• 29:21
Speaker 7: is that you know being outside does for you. Because
• 29:24
Speaker 7: I think all things being equal, anyone is going to
• 29:28
Speaker 7: have a better outcome if they stay active.
• 29:31
Speaker 3: I would agree with that one hundred percent, and so
• 29:33
Speaker 3: and so does science that they one hundred percent agree
• 29:35
Speaker 3: with that. Have you talked have you been in contact with,
• 29:38
Speaker 3: maybe across the country, with other parents that have gone
• 29:42
Speaker 3: through several things like you have it? Do you continue
• 29:44
Speaker 3: to offer support for them? Talk about that.
• 29:48
Speaker 7: I follow stories of other families who are going through treatments.
• 29:54
Speaker 7: I have been in contact with some of them. It
• 29:59
Speaker 7: can and be a very isolating feeling. There are times
• 30:02
Speaker 7: when you want to talk to other people in the
• 30:05
Speaker 7: same boat that you're in, But then there are times
• 30:08
Speaker 7: when you just want to pretend like that is it's
• 30:11
Speaker 7: not your reality. So I think it just varies. I
• 30:16
Speaker 7: am trying very hard, Davey and I both are trying
• 30:20
Speaker 7: very hard to be honest in my grief. I suppose
• 30:25
Speaker 7: it's how I would say it. So I've made posts
• 30:29
Speaker 7: on Facebook since Mattis has passed away just about the
• 30:33
Speaker 7: reality of losing a child and grief and what happens
• 30:37
Speaker 7: to you and your family dynamic when you have a
• 30:41
Speaker 7: tragedy like that. So, yes, I do stay in touch
• 30:46
Speaker 7: with people, but I've also realized that I could lose
• 30:50
Speaker 7: my child in the exact same way that somebody else did,
• 30:54
Speaker 7: and it's still what's going to work for me. What's
• 30:57
Speaker 7: going to get me from minute to minute is not
• 30:59
Speaker 7: the same as what's going to get them. You could
• 31:02
Speaker 7: lose a child suddenly, and as shocking as that would be,
• 31:07
Speaker 7: the end result is still the same. They're gone, and
• 31:10
Speaker 7: you know what you need to do to move forward,
• 31:13
Speaker 7: to put one foot in front of the other. There's
• 31:15
Speaker 7: just there's no uniformity to it.
• 31:18
Speaker 3: Before we let you go, what do you want the
• 31:22
Speaker 3: listeners and the world to know about your son?
• 31:27
Speaker 7: I want them to know what a faithful, steadfast boy
• 31:32
Speaker 7: he was. He found out very quickly in his treatment
• 31:37
Speaker 7: process that this was probably not going to work for him,
• 31:41
Speaker 7: and he said as much to me. One day. He
• 31:43
Speaker 7: said to me. We were driving to Cincinnati, and he said,
• 31:46
Speaker 7: if I don't make it out of this, I hope
• 31:48
Speaker 7: somebody can learn something from me, and then that's what
• 31:54
Speaker 7: we'll do, buddy. You know, then that's what we'll do.
• 31:57
Speaker 7: You know. He was fifteen, sixteen years old when this
• 32:00
Speaker 7: was happening. There was no circling around it, talking around it.
• 32:04
Speaker 7: You had to have these very blunt conversations, and he
• 32:06
Speaker 7: just he wanted somebody to learn. So he was faithful.
• 32:11
Speaker 7: He had no fear about where he was going. He
• 32:19
Speaker 7: just wanted to make sure that somehow, someway we do
• 32:23
Speaker 7: something so that at some point this doesn't happen to
• 32:28
Speaker 7: a sixteen year old.
• 32:30
Speaker 3: As we close, tell us about the foundation. How can
• 32:32
Speaker 3: people learn more about it? You are on social media
• 32:35
Speaker 3: website what do you got?
• 32:38
Speaker 14: Well, you can go to Maddoxpotter dot org. That's the
• 32:41

• 32:46

• 32:50
Speaker 14: really excited about it. We have the kickoff coming up
• 32:55
Speaker 14: next Thursday, and then the golf tournament, which be on Friday,
• 33:01
Speaker 14: be an annual thing, and we're really looking forward.
• 33:03
  Speaker 3: Where's a golf tournament.
• 33:05
Speaker 14: It's going to be at his home course at Barry Hills, Okay, okay.
• 33:08
  Speaker 2: And it's.
• 33:11
Speaker 14: Unfortunately and fortunately at the same time, it's sold out
• 33:14
Speaker 14: very quick. So going forward, still like to keep it
• 33:18
Speaker 14: at Berry Hills, but maybe have to do it in
• 33:20
Speaker 14: like two or three separate flights, just depending upon the
• 33:23
  Speaker 14: demand for it.
• 33:24
Speaker 3: So okay, well, guys, it's an inspirational story, and like
• 33:29
Speaker 3: I said, I was familiar with it through the media accounts,

• 36:28
Speaker 3: So well, whatever you do. With congratulations, let's talk about
• 36:33
Speaker 3: the weather because we got some it's springtime in Appalachia,
• 36:36
Speaker 3: which means sometimes we have these severe storms and looks
• 36:40
Speaker 3: like today is going to be one of those days.
• 36:42
Speaker 4: It really is, and you know, we we've got a
• 36:44
Speaker 4: lot of parameters that set us up perfectly for a
• 36:47
Speaker 4: classic afternoon severe storm of me. You know, a lot
• 36:51
Speaker 4: of what we've had in recent memory has been in
• 36:54
Speaker 4: the late night, in overnight hours. Things that needs early
• 36:57
Speaker 4: morning hours, you know, something that is exult lost to
• 37:00
Speaker 4: many people because you just can't see the storm coming.
• 37:03
Speaker 4: But we have afternute thunderstorms in between five and about
• 37:06
Speaker 4: eight o'clock is the time that we've got to keep
• 37:08
Speaker 4: our eyes really pinned to the sky and at least
• 37:12
Speaker 4: listening to the radio station. When you hear those eas
• 37:15
Speaker 4: tones that go out over five eighty, you know, when
• 37:18
Speaker 4: you're looksten, it'll be one hundred, you know, kws.
• 37:22
Speaker 5: Anything of that nature.
• 37:23
Speaker 4: You've got to pay attention to what we're talking about.
• 37:25
Speaker 4: We are going to have thunderstorms are capable producing damaging
• 37:29
Speaker 4: wing gus today along with large hail. This isn't just
• 37:32
Speaker 4: hal but we have the potentially have large hail today.
• 37:36
Speaker 4: So that's stuff that will do damage to vehicles, roof
• 37:39
Speaker 4: damage things of that nature. And also listen, we had
• 37:41
Speaker 4: storms up in Nicholas County the other day. There's a
• 37:43
Speaker 4: guy who got caught out in the hail. He had
• 37:46
Speaker 4: his back was all bruised from the large hail stems
• 37:49
Speaker 4: that happen there. So what we're telling you is pay attention.
• 37:53
Speaker 4: The times to be really a word is going to
• 37:57
Speaker 4: be between five and eight o'clock dece evening while we
• 38:00
Speaker 4: do the damage you wing gus and a large hell.
• 38:02
Speaker 4: Possible tornadoes are possible this afternoon as well. Storm for
• 38:05
Speaker 4: dicksonsidered Omen Oklahoma says that we have between a five
• 38:08
Speaker 4: and nine percent chance of any storm producing a tornado today.
• 38:12
Speaker 4: So our forecast models are very high on the tornado
• 38:17
Speaker 4: chance today, the rotating storms, and they're also very high
• 38:20
Speaker 4: on the hail threat for today, so just be aware
• 38:23
Speaker 4: of it. It's all going to come in from the
• 38:25
Speaker 4: west and northwest and then work its way off to
• 38:28
Speaker 4: the east southeast, and then after that we will be
• 38:32
Speaker 4: able to relax and then enjoy a much cooler day tomorrow,
• 38:36
Speaker 4: and just looking ahead, Friday will pop back up to
• 38:39
Speaker 4: eighty Some storms will be strong possible on Saturday and
• 38:43
Speaker 4: Easter Sunday of sprinkle chants with temperatures in a load
• 38:45
  Speaker 4: to mid seventy.
• 38:47
Speaker 3: And again you said the timetable, this is probably during
• 38:50
Speaker 3: the five o'clock hour, and people might be kind of
• 38:52
Speaker 3: fooled if they're out at about maybe they're taking lunch
• 38:54
Speaker 3: outside today it's absolutely beautiful. It's going to beautiful here
• 38:58
Speaker 3: in the Canal Valley leading up to those.
• 39:00
Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, it's going to be wonderful. I mean, listen,
• 39:03
Speaker 4: in temperatures today are going to be in the midnight
• 39:04
Speaker 4: for seventies. But you know the wind's going to be
• 39:07
Speaker 4: out there about ten to twenty out of the southwest today.
• 39:10
Speaker 4: But you know those winds this aftery, in this evening,
• 39:12
Speaker 4: I mean, we're definitely gonna get some damaging wing gust.
• 39:14
Speaker 4: But yeah, five to eight o'clock is going to be
• 39:17
Speaker 4: the time of grand concern. And then tomorrow, just make
• 39:21
Speaker 4: note that we will have a northwest wind about fifteen
• 39:24
Speaker 4: to thirty miles per hour and with it only the
• 39:26
Speaker 4: upper fifties, it's going to be few and pretty gosh
• 39:29
Speaker 4: darn cool for a Tuesday.
• 39:30
Speaker 3: Be weather alert. Hey, Brian, I appreciate you being here,
• 39:33
Speaker 3: my friend. Thanks a lot, and I know you guys
• 39:34
Speaker 3: aren't going to get a whole lot of sleep you
• 39:36
Speaker 3: and Spencer and Chris, so keep it eye for you.
• 39:39
Speaker 3: We'll be watching and listening. Thanks a lot, man, sounds good,
• 39:42
Speaker 3: We did it. Brian Hughes from Tracker thirteen. I just
• 39:45
Speaker 3: know you got some severe weather and this is not
• 39:48
Speaker 3: something to play with this afternoon. At a timetable starting
• 39:50
Speaker 3: at about five o'clock this afternoon, so you may encounter
• 39:54
Speaker 3: on your drive home, but it looks like that five
• 39:56
Speaker 3: to eight window, it's going to be pretty pretty intense
• 39:59
Speaker 3: here in the canal, ally with possibility of tornadoes and
• 40:04
Speaker 3: large hail damaging wins. If you got an event playing
• 40:08
Speaker 3: the sevening in a high school baseball game, little league soccer, whatever,
• 40:10
Speaker 3: chances are it's going to be canceled because it ain't
• 40:13
Speaker 3: looking good. But it's that small window between about five
• 40:17
Speaker 3: and eight. Then after eight it's going to start to
• 40:19
Speaker 3: calm down a little bit, so just be aware of that.

Speaker 3: the session was winding down. You can read all about them.

Speaker 3: At wv metronews dot com. But one I quickly want
• 46:01
Speaker 3: to focus on. I'll bring TJ. Meadows in here as well,
• 46:03
Speaker 3: and Brad writes about it this morning wv metronews dot com.
• 46:07
Speaker 3: Remember a couple of years ago when the voters rejected
• 46:09
Speaker 3: a proposed amendment that would give the state the ultimate
• 46:12
Speaker 3: say so over state Board of education policies. Yeah, that one. Well,
• 46:16
Speaker 3: the legislature said, not so fast, and we know better
• 46:20
Speaker 3: than you, so they approved a bill on Friday. Anyway,
• 46:24
Speaker 3: several Republicans spoke out against it as well they should
• 46:27
Speaker 3: in my humble opinion, as the voters have stated they
• 46:30
Speaker 3: didn't want the legislature to have this kind of control
• 46:33
Speaker 3: out of Charleston. The amendment and its exact language would
• 46:36
Speaker 3: have given the legislature of the authority to review and
• 46:39
Speaker 3: to approve state Board of Education rules and policy. That
• 46:41
Speaker 3: was defeated by the voters fifty eight to forty two percent.
• 46:45
Speaker 3: Fifty of the state's fifty five counties voted against it
• 46:49
Speaker 3: in twenty twenty two. As was pointed out by a
• 46:52
Speaker 3: few legislators, including Republicans, I'm just not a huge fan
• 46:57
Speaker 3: of that, to be honest with you. But eight Alan

Speaker 3: with us you my friend also not a huge fan,
• 47:12
Speaker 3: not a huge fan at all. And can we expect
• 47:15
Speaker 3: a commentary on I'm working on one right now and
• 47:18
Speaker 3: one of the angles that I explore, it'll probably be
• 47:20
  Speaker 3: out this evening.
• 47:22
Speaker 8: But you know, Dave, the power of a constitution originates
• 47:27
Speaker 8: from the people. It's the whole idea of a republic.
• 47:30
Speaker 8: The concept refers to popular sovereignty. And when we ignore
• 47:37
Speaker 8: the will of the people, and they have spoken on
• 47:40
Speaker 8: this issue, what happens to the idea of the consent
• 47:45
Speaker 8: of the governed? And people are saying, oh, here he
• 47:48
Speaker 8: goes again, Here he goes again. Here's the problem. This
• 47:52
Speaker 8: may be a little thing to some people, but little
• 47:55
Speaker 8: things cracks in the dam, have a way of becoming
• 47:58
Speaker 8: big things. And the first time you ignore the concept
• 48:02
Speaker 8: of popular sovereignty and you do something today, it's saying
• 48:06
Speaker 8: that all of the policies of the State Board of
• 48:08
Speaker 8: Education have to go before the legislature, but what's next.
• 48:12
Speaker 8: It's easier to do it the next time and the
• 48:14
Speaker 8: next time after that. That's what really rubs me here
• 48:18
Speaker 8: is the fact that we've totally disregarded the fundamentals of
• 48:23
Speaker 8: the state constitution, and for that matter, are our United
• 48:27
  Speaker 8: States Constitution.

Speaker 3: get delivery by going to husbands Pizza dot com. Here's
• 48:39
Speaker 3: my question about all this, and the listeners have heard
• 48:41
Speaker 3: me say this, DJ is anomber Republican party, the one
• 48:44
Speaker 3: that was supposed to want to give more power back
• 48:47
Speaker 3: to local entities. I mean, that's how we liked small government.
• 48:51
Speaker 3: But I'm not a member of the party. That's not
• 48:53
Speaker 3: what I'm seeing. I'm seen that it seems like many
• 48:56
Speaker 3: and not all, because as I said, there were several
• 48:58
Speaker 3: Republicans that spoke out against this on this and other things.
• 49:03
Speaker 3: It seems to me like they want to bring the
• 49:06
Speaker 3: power to Charleston. And that's that's so anti Republican.
• 49:12
Speaker 8: In my opinion, the best voice I have heard on
• 49:15
Speaker 8: this on either side of the capitol is Senator Amy Grady.
• 49:18
Speaker 8: She stood up and warned about this, voted against this,
• 49:21
Speaker 8: and said, look, if we feel that the voters were confused,
• 49:25
Speaker 8: and we can get into that argument, I don't think
• 49:27
Speaker 8: they were. If we feel there's some other issue at play,
• 49:30
Speaker 8: then we should put this back on the ballot, a
• 49:32
Speaker 8: single amendment, and we should ensure that voters are educated.
• 49:36
Speaker 8: We should have to go out and get the populace
• 49:38
Speaker 8: to understand our issue here and have them vote in
• 49:40
Speaker 8: the affirmative outstanding idea. Why it didn't happen, I don't know,
• 49:45
Speaker 8: but that would have been the way to handle this. I,
• 49:48
Speaker 8: like a lot of people, was watching the closing moments
• 49:50
Speaker 8: of a legislature and I am not by any stretch
• 49:54
Speaker 8: of the imagination of parliamentarian, but I saw stuff Saturday
• 49:57
Speaker 8: night that that made that made my head span.
• 50:00
  Speaker 2: Man.
• 50:01
Speaker 8: Yeah, so we'll get into that with Joey Garcia. He's
• 50:04
Speaker 8: going to be on at ten oh six. I want
• 50:07
Speaker 8: to pine on it at this point, other than to say, yeah,
• 50:10
Speaker 8: there were some balls that got dropped.
• 50:12
Speaker 3: I had no idea where you were going with that,
• 50:14
Speaker 3: just just so you know you said that.
• 50:16
Speaker 8: So I think there's definitely some questions that need answering,
• 50:21
Speaker 8: and look, maybe there are good answers to those questions.
• 50:25
Speaker 3: I'm going to have Senator tar on the midday show
• 50:27
Speaker 3: today too, so maybe we can leave you with this.
• 50:30
Speaker 8: If rules are to have purpose and to have value,
• 50:33
Speaker 8: they can't be like ice cream easily melted.
• 50:37
Speaker 3: Texas Dave, I think the legislature should be able to
• 50:39
Speaker 3: review decisions made by the state Board of Education simply
• 50:42
Speaker 3: because legislators are elected members of the state Board of Education.
• 50:46
Speaker 3: Are not your thoughts on that. I mean, my biggest
• 50:50
Speaker 3: issue with this, TJ not interrupt, which I just did.
• 50:53
Speaker 3: My biggest issue with this is that the voters said
• 50:56
Speaker 3: they didn't want exactly. That's my biggest issue with this.
• 50:58
Speaker 3: You can get into a fundamental argument over it, but
• 51:00
Speaker 3: I think bottom line, in twenty twenty two, the voter
• 51:03
Speaker 3: said that they did not want this, yes, and that
• 51:05
Speaker 3: Trump's the policy question here. It can become about policy
• 51:08
Speaker 3: and then again back to what Grady wanted to do.
• 51:10
Speaker 3: If there's a reason this makes good policy sense, then
• 51:14
Speaker 3: let's put it to the voters and let them decide,
• 51:18
Speaker 3: and that Trump's everything. When we start to do things.
• 51:23
Speaker 8: Without the proper realm and the proper functioning of government
• 51:27
Speaker 8: and these constitutional questions, these kinds of things, that gives
• 51:30
  Speaker 8: me pause.
• 51:32
Speaker 3: I don't like it. All right, you got Garcia on
• 51:34
Speaker 3: the show with us. You got on the show. Yeah.
• 51:35
Speaker 8: So coming up at ten thirty, Riley More joins us

• 51:58
Speaker 3: she's a big Bryson fan. I like his style of golf.
• 52:03
Speaker 3: I like that he challenges the status quo. I like
