Speaker 1: Chapter eight, in which Passepartout talks rather more, perhaps than
• 0:04
Speaker 1: is prudent. Fix soon rejoined Passepartout, who was lounging and
• 0:12
Speaker 1: looking about on the quay, as if he did not
• 0:15
Speaker 1: feel that he at least was obliged not to see anything. Well,
• 0:19
Speaker 1: my friend said the detective coming up with him. Is
• 0:22
Speaker 1: your passport vizit? Ah, it's you, is it, Monsieur, responded Passepartout, Thanks, yes,
• 0:30
Speaker 1: the PASSPORTI is all right, and you are looking about you. Yes,
• 0:36
Speaker 1: but we travel so fast that I seem to be
• 0:38
Speaker 1: journeying in a dream. So this is Suez, Yes, in Egypt,
• 0:46
Speaker 1: certainly in Egypt, and in Africa, in Africa, in Africa,
• 0:54
Speaker 1: repeated Passepartout. You just think, Monsieur. I had no idea
• 0:58
Speaker 1: that we should go farther than Parris. And all that
• 1:02
Speaker 1: I saw Paris was between twenty minutes past seven and
• 1:06
Speaker 1: twenty minutes before nine in the morning, between the Northern
• 1:09
Speaker 1: and the Lyons stations, through the window of a car,
• 1:13
Speaker 1: and in a driving rain. How I regret not having
• 1:17
Speaker 1: seen once more Pere Lachaise and the circus in the Champselysee.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: You are in a great hurry then I am not,
• 1:26
Speaker 1: but my master is by the way, I must buy
• 1:30
Speaker 1: some shoes and shirts. We came away with our trunks
• 1:33
Speaker 1: only with a carpet bag. I will show you an
• 1:37
Speaker 1: excellent shop forgetting what you want. Really, monsieur, you are
• 1:41
Speaker 1: very kind. And they walked off together, pass partout chatting
• 1:46
Speaker 1: volubly as they went along. Above All said he don't
• 1:51
Speaker 1: let me lose the steamer. You have plenty of time.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: It's only twelve o'clock. Pass Partout pulled out his big
• 1:59
Speaker 1: watch twelve. He exclaimed, why it's only eight minutes before ten?
• 2:05
Speaker 1: Your watch is slow. My watch a family watch, monsieur,
• 2:12
Speaker 1: which has come down from my great grandfather. It doesn't
• 2:15
Speaker 1: very five minutes in the year. It is a perfect chronometer.
• 2:19
Speaker 1: Look you, I see how it is said fix. You
• 2:24
Speaker 1: have kept London time, which is two hours behind that
• 2:27
Speaker 1: of Suez. You ought to regulate your watch at noon
• 2:30
Speaker 1: in each country. I regulate my watch never. Well, then
• 2:37
Speaker 1: it will not agree with the sun so much, the
• 2:40
Speaker 1: worse for the sun, monsieur. The sun will be wrong then,
• 2:44
Speaker 1: and the worthy fellow returned the watch to its fob
• 2:47
Speaker 1: with a defiant gesture. After a few minutes, silence, Fix
• 2:51
Speaker 1: resumed you left London hastily then, I rather think so.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: Last Friday, at eight o'clock in the evening, Monsieur Fogg
• 3:01
Speaker 1: came home from his club, and three quarters of an
• 3:04
Speaker 1: hour afterwards we were off. But where is your master going?
• 3:10
Speaker 1: Always straight ahead? He is going round the world, round
• 3:15
Speaker 1: the world, cried Fix. Yes, and in eighty days he
• 3:21
Speaker 1: says it is on a wager. But between us, I
• 3:24
Speaker 1: don't believe a word of it. That wouldn't be common sense.
• 3:28
Speaker 1: There's something else in the wind. Ah, Mister Fogg is
• 3:33
Speaker 1: a character, is he? I should say he was? Is
• 3:38
Speaker 1: he rich? No doubt? For he is carrying an enormous
• 3:43
Speaker 1: son in brand new banknotes with him, and he doesn't
• 3:46
Speaker 1: spare the money on the way either. He has offered
• 3:49
Speaker 1: a large reward to the engineer of the Mongolia if
• 3:52
Speaker 1: he gets us to Bombay well in advance of time.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: And you have known your master a long time, why
• 4:01
Speaker 1: no I entered his service the very day we left London.
• 4:06
Speaker 1: The effect of these replies upon the already suspicious and
• 4:09
Speaker 1: excited detective may be imagined. The hasty departure from London
• 4:14
Speaker 1: soon after the robbery, the large sum carried by mister Fogg.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: His eagerness to reach distant countries the pretext of an
• 4:23
Speaker 1: eccentric and foolhardy bet All confirmed Fix in his theory.
• 4:28
Speaker 1: He continued to pump poor Passepartout and learned that he
• 4:32
Speaker 1: really knew little or nothing of his master, who lived
• 4:35
Speaker 1: a solitary existence in London, was said to be rich,
• 4:40
Speaker 1: though no one knew whence came his riches, and was
• 4:43
Speaker 1: mysterious and impenetrable in his affairs and habits. Fix felt
• 4:47
Speaker 1: sure that Phileas Fogg would not land at sue As,
• 4:50
Speaker 1: but was really going on to Bombay? Is Bombay far
• 4:55
Speaker 1: from here? Asked Passepartout. Pretty far? It is ten days
• 5:00
Speaker 1: voyage by sea? And in what country is Bombay? India?
• 5:07
Speaker 1: In Asia? Certainly the deuce. I was going to tell
• 5:13
Speaker 1: you that there's one thing that worries me. My burner,
• 5:18
Speaker 1: what burner, my guests burner which I forgot to turn off,
• 5:23
Speaker 1: and which is at this moment burning at my expense.
• 5:26
Speaker 1: I have calculated, monsieur, that I lose two shillings every
• 5:30
Speaker 1: four and twenty hours, exactly sixpence more than I earn.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: And you will understand that the longer our journey. Did
• 5:40
Speaker 1: Fix pay any attention to pass Partou's trouble about the gas,
• 5:44
Speaker 1: It is not probable he was not listening, but was
• 5:47
Speaker 1: cogitating a project pass Partwo and he had now reached
• 5:52
Speaker 1: the shop where Fix left his companion to make his
• 5:55
Speaker 1: purchases after recommending him not to miss the steamer and
• 5:59
Speaker 1: herhurried back to the consulate. Now that he was fully
• 6:03
Speaker 1: convinced Fix had quite recovered his equanimity, Consul said he
• 6:09
Speaker 1: I have no longer any doubt I have spotted my man.
• 6:13
Speaker 1: He passes himself off as an odd stick who is
• 6:16
Speaker 1: going round the world in eighty days. Then he's a
• 6:20
Speaker 1: sharp fellow, returned the Consul, and counts on returning to
• 6:24
Speaker 1: London after putting the police of the two countries off
• 6:28
Speaker 1: his track. We'll see about that, replied Fix. But are
• 6:34
Speaker 1: you not mistaken? I am not mistaken. Why was this
• 6:40
Speaker 1: robber so anxious to prove by the visa that he
• 6:44
Speaker 1: had passed through Suez? Why? I have no idea, but
• 6:49
Speaker 1: listen to me, he reported in a few words the
• 6:52
Speaker 1: most important parts of his conversation with Passepartout, in short, said,
• 6:59
Speaker 1: the consul appearances are wholly against this man. And what
• 7:03
Speaker 1: are you going to do? Send a dispatch to London
• 7:08
Speaker 1: for a warrant of arrest to be dispatched instantly to Bombay,
• 7:12
Speaker 1: take passage on board the Mongolia, follow my rogue to India,
• 7:17
Speaker 1: and there on English ground, arrest him politely, with my
• 7:20
Speaker 1: warrant in my hand and my hand on his shoulder.
• 7:25
Speaker 1: Having uttered these words with a cool, careless air, the
• 7:28
Speaker 1: detective took leave of the consul and repaired to the
• 7:31
Speaker 1: Telegraph office, whence he sent the dispatch which we have seen,
• 7:35
Speaker 1: to the London Police Office. A quarter of an hour later,
• 7:39
Speaker 1: found Fix with a small bag in his hand, proceeding
• 7:42
Speaker 1: on board the Mongolia, and ere many moments longer the
• 7:46
Speaker 1: noble steamer rode out at full steam upon the waters
• 7:50
Speaker 1: of the Red Sea. End of Chapter
