- 0:11Hello friends, It's shown here. It is the 15th of September.
- 0:16It's a Monday. I am another year older.
- 0:19Yeah, this weekend I celebrate a birthday.
- 0:22Ha, so much fun. And now the new week begins, and
- 0:26we're going to keep going this week with this Cuban cool music
- 0:29kind of serenading us as we get started each day.
- 0:33And most importantly, birthdays and Cuban music aside, we
- 0:37continue this amazing story of God's church growing through the
- 0:41book of Acts. And Can you believe it?
- 0:43We've only got a couple of weeks left reading through Acts, and
- 0:46then we're going to dive into a whole bunch of epistles as Paul
- 0:51writes to the churches encouraging them.
- 0:53And that, my friends, that is where we really start to glean
- 0:57all this good stuff about Christian living and everything
- 1:01that Jesus has done for us. But before we get there, we are
- 1:05continuing this story of not the letters that Paul writes, but
- 1:09the visits that he makes to these churches, encouraging them
- 1:12and, well, stirring the pot as well.
- 1:14So let us continue in the story as we read together Acts chapter
- 1:1919. While Apollos was in Corinth,
- 1:32Paul travelled through the interior regions until he
- 1:35reached Ephesus on the coast, where he found several
- 1:38believers. Did you receive the Holy Spirit
- 1:41when you believed? He asked them.
- 1:43No, they replied. We haven't even heard that there
- 1:47is a Holy Spirit. Then what baptism did you
- 1:50experience? He asked and they replied, the
- 1:53baptism of John. Paul said John's baptism called
- 1:57for repentance from sin, but John himself told the people to
- 2:01believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.
- 2:04As soon as they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the
- 2:08Lord Jesus and when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy
- 2:12Spirit came on them and they spoke in other tongues and
- 2:15prophesied. There are about 12 men in all.
- 2:20Then Paul went to the synagogue and preached boldly for the next
- 2:23three months, arguing persuasively about the Kingdom
- 2:26of God. But some became stubborn,
- 2:29rejecting his message and publicly speaking against the
- 2:32way. Sir Paul left the synagogue and
- 2:35took the believers with him. Then he held daily discussions
- 2:38at the lecture halls of Tyrannis.
- 2:40This went on for the next two years, so that people throughout
- 2:45the province of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the word of
- 2:49the Lord. God gave Paul the power to
- 2:52perform unusual miracles. When handkerchiefs or aprons
- 2:56that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they
- 2:59were healed of their diseases and evil spirits were expelled.
- 3:04A group of Jews was travelling from town to town casting out
- 3:07evil spirits. They tried to use the name of
- 3:10the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying, I command
- 3:13you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out.
- 3:19Seven sons of Sceva, a leaving priest, were doing this but one
- 3:24time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied, I know
- 3:28Jesus and I know Paul, but who are you?
- 3:32Then the man with the evil spirit leapt on them,
- 3:34overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that
- 3:38they fled the house naked and battered.
- 3:42The story of what happened spread quickly all through
- 3:45Ephesus to Jews and Greeks alike.
- 3:48A solemn fear descended on the city, and the name of the Lord
- 3:51Jesus was greatly honoured. Many who became believers
- 3:55confessed their sinful practises.
- 3:58A number of them who had been practising sorcery brought their
- 4:01incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire.
- 4:06The value of the books was several, $1,000,000 So the
- 4:10message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful
- 4:13effect. Afterward Paul felt compelled by
- 4:17the Spirit to go over to Macedonia and Ikaya before going
- 4:21to Jerusalem, and after that he said I must go on to Rome.
- 4:26He sent his two assistants, Timothy and Erastus, ahead to
- 4:30Macedonia, while he stayed a while longer in the province of
- 4:33Asia. About that time, serious trouble
- 4:37developed an Ephesus concerning the way it began with Demetrius,
- 4:41A silversmith who had a large business manufacturing silver
- 4:45shrines of the Greek goddess Artemis.
- 4:48He kept many Craftsman busy. He called them together along
- 4:52with others employed in similar trades, and addressed them as
- 4:55follows. Gentlemen, you know that our
- 4:58wealth comes from this business. But as you have seen and heard,
- 5:03this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods aren't
- 5:08really gods at all. And he's done this not only here
- 5:11in Ephesus, but throughout the entire province.
- 5:15Of course, I'm not just talking about the loss of public respect
- 5:18for our business. I'm also concerned that the
- 5:20temple of the great goddess Artemis will lose its influence,
- 5:24and that Artemis, this magnificent goddess worshipped
- 5:28throughout the province of Asia and all around the world, will
- 5:31be robbed of her great prestige. At this, their anger boiled and
- 5:37they began shouting. Great is Artemis of the
- 5:40Ephesians. Soon the whole city was filled
- 5:43with confusion. Everyone rushed to the
- 5:46Amphitheatre, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, who were
- 5:50Paul's travelling companions from Macedonia.
- 5:53Paul wanted to go in too, but the believers wouldn't let him.
- 5:57Some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, also
- 6:00sent a message to him, begging him not to risk his life by
- 6:04entering the Amphitheatre. Inside, the people were all
- 6:07shouting someone, thing and some another.
- 6:10Everything was in confusion. In fact, most of them didn't
- 6:14even know why they were there. The Jews and the crowd pushed
- 6:18Alexander forward and told him to explain the situation.
- 6:21He motioned for silence and tried to speak, but when the
- 6:24crowd realised he was a Jew, they started shouting again and
- 6:29kept it up for about two hours. Great is Artemis of the
- 6:33Ephesians. Great is Artemis of the
- 6:35Ephesians. At last the male was able to
- 6:39quiet them down enough to speak. Citizens of Ephesus, he said.
- 6:45Everyone knows that Ephesus is the official guardian of the
- 6:49temple of the Great Artemis, whose image fell down to us from
- 6:53heaven. Since this is an undeniable
- 6:56fact, you should stay calm and not do anything rash.
- 7:01You have brought these men here, but they have stolen nothing
- 7:05from the temple and have not spoken against our goddess.
- 7:09If Demetrius and the Craftsman have a case against them, the
- 7:12courts are in session and the officials can hear the case at
- 7:15once. Let them make formal charges,
- 7:19and if there are complaints about other matters, they can be
- 7:22settled in a legal assembly. I'm afraid we are in danger of
- 7:26being charged with rioting by the Roman government, since
- 7:30there is no cause for all this commotion, and if Rome demands
- 7:34an explanation, we won't know what to say.
- 7:37Then he dismissed them and they dispersed.
- 7:51Jesus, your message is many things, but inert and lifeless
- 7:56is not one. We hear your message.
- 8:01Just your name itself is this name that is more powerful than
- 8:06any evil that is found in the world, and that evil has no
- 8:09option but to flee in your presence.
- 8:13And we hear that your name, spoken in the midst of this
- 8:16town, brings absolute chaos as you bring about a new way of
- 8:22being. You threaten the status quo.
- 8:25You, you change the way that our human nature does life, and you
- 8:29teach us a better way, not just at a philosophical level, but
- 8:36you love us and you transform us, and you want us to be part
- 8:41of your family. Oh, what an incredible thing.
- 8:44Jesus, thank you for your love for us.
- 8:46Thank you for everything that you accomplished for us on the
- 8:50cross, that you bought us freedom at the great cost, and
- 8:56that that news is worth sharing. Empower us and Bolden us today
- 9:03that we can live knowing that we are freed and forgiven people
- 9:09and sharing that incredible news with anyone who might need to
- 9:13hear it now. We love you and we thank you,
- 9:15and we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
