- 0:03Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host Andrew McGivern
- 0:11for August 13th. Today is International Left
- 0:15Handers Day, celebrating the roughly 10% of the population
- 0:18who navigate through a world designed for right-handed
- 0:21people. This special day was first
- 0:24established in 1976 to raise awareness about the daily
- 0:28challenges left-handed people face and to celebrate their
- 0:31unique perspective on the world. Think about it.
- 0:35From scissors to can openers, from spiral notebooks to
- 0:38computer mice, from door handles to guitar strings, almost
- 0:43everything is designed with right-handed people in mind.
- 0:47Left handers have spent their entire lives adapting,
- 0:50adjusting, and finding creative workarounds in a world that
- 0:54wasn't built for them. But here's what's fascinating
- 0:57left-handed people are often more creative, better at
- 1:00multitasking, and excel at thinking outside the box.
- 1:04Maybe it's because they've had to be innovative their whole
- 1:07lives, constantly finding new ways to do everyday tasks.
- 1:11They've been forced to be adapted from day one.
- 1:14Some of history's most creative minds were left-handed.
- 1:18Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Albert Einstein, Mozart and more
- 1:24recently Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Oprah Winfrey and my
- 1:30sister. Not bad company to be in.
- 1:33Which brings us to today's quote from Albert Einstein, a
- 1:37left-handed person himself, who once said a person who never
- 1:43made a mistake, never tried anything new.
- 1:47Einstein quote captures something essential about the
- 1:49left-handed experience and really about life in general.
- 1:54left-handed people make mistakes all the time, at least according
- 1:59to a right-handed world. They hold their pencil wrong,
- 2:04they cut backwards, and they approach tasks from the opposite
- 2:09direction. What if those aren't mistakes at
- 2:12all? What if they're just different
- 2:14ways of doing things, ways that sometimes turn out to be better,
- 2:19more creative, or more efficient?
- 2:22Einstein understood that innovation comes from being
- 2:25willing to try new approaches, even when, or especially when,
- 2:30they go against conventional wisdom.
- 2:33Left handers embody this every single day.
- 2:37They can't just follow the standard instructions or use
- 2:39tools the normal way. They have to experiment, adapt
- 2:44and create their own methods. This is a lesson for all of us,
- 2:48whether we're left-handed or right-handed.
- 2:51The willingness to try something new, to approach problems from a
- 2:55different angle, to risk making what others might call mistakes.
- 3:00That's where breakthrough thinking happens.
- 3:02Maybe the real lesson of Left Handers Day isn't just about
- 3:06celebrating the 10% who use their left hand, but about
- 3:09celebrating the value of different perspectives and
- 3:12approaches in general. So today, whether you're
- 3:15left-handed, right-handed or ambidextrous, remember
- 3:19Einstein's wisdom. Don't be afraid to try new
- 3:22approaches, even if they seem wrong to others.
- 3:26Don't be discouraged by mistakes, they might just be
- 3:29different ways of doing things that haven't been recognized
- 3:32yet. And if you're right-handed,
- 3:35maybe take a moment to appreciate the left handers in
- 3:38your life who've been quietly adapting and innovating their
- 3:41way through a world that wasn't designed for them.
- 3:46They've got something to teach us about resilience and
- 3:49creativity that's going to do it for today.
- 3:53May you embrace your unique perspective, celebrate what
- 3:57makes you different, and never be afraid to try something new.
- 4:03I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:08tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
