- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 5th of
- 0:16December and good on you. But tapping on play and inviting
- 0:21me into your day so that we can continue to read a chapter of
- 0:25God's word together. And this morning, this
- 0:28afternoon, this evening, wherever you are is no different
- 0:31because we continue in this story.
- 0:33And this is of course the story of God's church growing from
- 0:38those 12 apostles to be this incredible movement that goes
- 0:43across continents and spans the whole world eventually.
- 0:47But here we see this church growing and growing and one
- 0:51thing that we haven't yet heard, and in fact, today we will hear
- 0:55the only story captured of Paul or an apostle praying and
- 1:02speaking with a group of church elders, church leaders.
- 1:07So that's quite significant as we hear this apostle sharing his
- 1:11heart and instruction with this group of ministers, this group
- 1:14of pastors who will go on to lead God's church.
- 1:19So you ready to hear that? Yeah, me too.
- 1:21Let's do it. Let's read together.
- 1:22Act chapter 20. When the uproar was over, Paul
- 1:37sent for the believers and encouraged them.
- 1:40Then he said goodbye and left Macedonia.
- 1:43While there, he encouraged the believers in all the towns he
- 1:46passed through. Then he travelled down to
- 1:49Greece, where he stayed for three months.
- 1:52He was preparing to sail back to Syria when he discovered a plot
- 1:56by some Jews against his life. So he decided to return through
- 2:00Macedonia. Several men were travelling with
- 2:03him. They were so parter, son of
- 2:06Pirus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica,
- 2:12Gaius from Derby, Timothy, Anticucus and Trophemus from the
- 2:18province of Asia. They went on ahead and waited
- 2:21for us at Troas. After the Passover ended, we
- 2:25boarded a ship at Philippi in Macedonia and five days later
- 2:30joined them in Troas, where we stayed a week.
- 2:34On the first day of the week we gathered with the local
- 2:36believers to share the Lord's Supper.
- 2:39Paul was preaching to them, and since he was leaving the next
- 2:42day, he kept talking until midnight.
- 2:45The upstairs room where we met was lighted with many flickering
- 2:49lamps. As Paul spoke on and on, a young
- 2:53man named Euticus, sitting on the window sill, became very
- 2:57drowsy. Finally he fell sound asleep and
- 3:01dropped three stories to his death below.
- 3:05Paul went down, bent over him and took him into his arms.
- 3:10Don't worry, he said. He's alive.
- 3:13Then they all went back upstairs, shared in the Lord's
- 3:16Supper, and ate together. Paul continued talking to them
- 3:20until dawn, and then he left. Meanwhile, the young man was
- 3:24taken home alive and well, and everyone was greatly relieved.
- 3:31Paul went by the land to Asos, where he had arranged for us to
- 3:35join him while we travelled by ship.
- 3:38He joined us there and we sailed together to Mittaline.
- 3:42The next day we sailed past the island of Chios.
- 3:46The following day we crossed to the island of Samos, and a day
- 3:50later we arrived at Miletus. Paul had decided to sail on past
- 3:56Ephesus, for he didn't want to spend any more time in the
- 3:59province of Asia. He was hurrying to get to
- 4:01Jerusalem, if possible, in time for the festival of Pentecost.
- 4:06But when we landed at Miletus, he sent a message to the elders
- 4:09of the church at Ephesus asking them to come and meet him.
- 4:14When they arrived, he declared, You know that from the day I set
- 4:18foot in the province of Asia until now, I have done the
- 4:22Lord's work humbly and with many tears.
- 4:25I have endured the trials that came to me from the plots of the
- 4:29Jews. I never shrank back from telling
- 4:31you what you needed to hear, either publicly or in your
- 4:35homes. I have had one message for Jews
- 4:38and Gentiles alike, the necessity of repenting from sin
- 4:43and turning to God, and of having faith in our Lord Jesus.
- 4:48And now I am bound by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem.
- 4:52I don't know what awaits me, except that the Holy Spirit
- 4:56tells me in city after city that gaol and suffering lie ahead.
- 5:01But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing
- 5:05the work assigned to me by the Lord Jesus, the work of telling
- 5:09others the good news about the wonderful grace of God.
- 5:13And now I know that none of you to whom I have preached the
- 5:17Kingdom will ever see me again. I declare today that I have been
- 5:23faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death,
- 5:27it's not my fault, for I didn't shrink from declaring all that
- 5:31God wants you to know. So guard yourselves and God's
- 5:36people, feed and shepherd God's flock His church purchased with
- 5:42His own blood, over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as
- 5:46leaders. I know that false teachers like
- 5:50vicious wolves will come in among you after I leave, not
- 5:54sparing the flock. Even some men from your own
- 5:58group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a
- 6:01following. Watch out.
- 6:03Remember the three years I was with you, my constant watch and
- 6:08care over you night and day, and my many tears for you.
- 6:14And now I entrust you to God for the message of His grace that it
- 6:19is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all
- 6:23those He has set apart for Himself.
- 6:27I have never coveted anyone's silver or gold or fine clothes.
- 6:32You know that these hands of mine have worked to supply my
- 6:35own needs and even the needs of those who were with me, and I
- 6:39have been a constant example of how you can help those in need
- 6:43by working hard. You should remember the words of
- 6:47the Lord Jesus. It is more blessed to give than
- 6:51to receive. When He had finished speaking,
- 6:55he knelt and prayed with them. They all cried as they embraced
- 7:00and kissed Him goodbye. They were sad most of all
- 7:04because He had said that they would never see him again.
- 7:09Then they escorted him down to the ship.
- 7:22My Lord, as we hear this impassioned communication
- 7:26between Paul and these church leaders whom he loves, we see so
- 7:30clearly that this life of ministry in Your name is not one
- 7:36that we do with only one part of ourselves, with our thoughts or
- 7:42with our actions, or with our intelligence, with our heart.
- 7:48No, Lord, this is all of us. Lord, just draw us into Your
- 7:54Kingdom's priorities so that as we live our Christian lives, we
- 7:59would do so wholeheartedly with every part of us.
- 8:04That we would dive deeply into community to share Your love.
- 8:08That we would give our all in our relationships as we shine
- 8:13Your love and Your example in our lives to those around us.
- 8:18Lord, You gave Your all for us, and I pray by Your Spirit that
- 8:23You would enable and inspire us to give our all in our service
- 8:28of You and Your Kingdom. Thank You that You don't ask us
- 8:34to do anything that You have not already done, and that as we do
- 8:39this, we do this in the sure embrace of your love and your
- 8:43forgiveness and our eternal home with you in your family.
- 8:51We thank you so much for inspiring us and saving us, and
- 8:57we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
