- 0:30Open your Bible's Genesis chapter 42, a new chapter in our
- 0:35Bible. Study through the book of
- 0:37Genesis, Genesis chapter 42, and listen.
- 0:40The title's very important I've been tottered.
- 0:43Our Bible study Your Sin will find you out.
- 0:47It's a very important biblical principle.
- 0:51As we follow the life of Joseph, we see that his life is clearly
- 0:55in the hands of God, even though he doesn't get to enjoy his
- 1:00family. He's been separated from his
- 1:03family because of the favoritism of his dad, and then the
- 1:07different favoritism of his mom and dad, and then the difficulty
- 1:10of his siblings. He's been separated from his
- 1:13family for a long time. And it's good to be reminded
- 1:18today that it's not the heart of God to cease family separated
- 1:21and fractured as they are today. So many times the family is the
- 1:26very place that God is designed to build up strong believers and
- 1:30disciple children in the ways of the Lord.
- 1:34And yet sin and pride and rebellious hearts have caused
- 1:37family after family to crumble and disintegrate.
- 1:41And that may describe your family today.
- 1:43And I'm sorry. It's very hard to live with.
- 1:47It's hard to see what God intended for our good to be used
- 1:51in such a way to bring pain and difficulty and trauma.
- 1:55Joseph was born into a broken family, and I believe one of the
- 1:59messages we learned today is Joseph was born into a broken
- 2:02family and God used him. Still, he was born into
- 2:07difficult circumstances, and yet God was able to take him and
- 2:11raise him above those circumstances.
- 2:14Don't ever misunderstand, though.
- 2:15The situation was still filled with pain, still filled with
- 2:19hardship, still filled with loneliness, still filled with,
- 2:23perhaps questions and wonderings.
- 2:26But Joseph was born into a family with multiple moms, an
- 2:30absent dad filled with hatred, jealousy, corruption, wicked
- 2:36sexual sin. The cards were stacked against
- 2:40him. He sold into slavery, falsely
- 2:44accused of rape, imprisoned, and yet God elevated him and now he
- 2:49is second in command in Egypt. And yet he's still without his
- 2:55family and he's still without those that he loves.
- 3:00But we also now see God using another difficulty to connect
- 3:04his family, a famine. Notice with me in verse one of
- 3:09chapter 42 it says when Jacob. Saw that there was grain in
- 3:13Egypt, Jacob said to his sons. Why do you look at another?
- 3:17And he said, indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt.
- 3:21Go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may live
- 3:25and not die. A great famine has hit the land,
- 3:29and the brothers are there standing around looking at each
- 3:32other, not knowing what to do. God, he speaks to Jacob.
- 3:37Jacob gives direction as the dad that he is.
- 3:41And God moves through this worldwide famine to move the
- 3:44heart of Jacob. And that's how often God will
- 3:47move in our lives. He will use circumstances and
- 3:50difficulties to get our attention to lay off at work.
- 3:54A unexpected bill, a broken toilet, a flat tire, a dead
- 3:59battery and argument, a tragedy. The list is unending, but they
- 4:03change our direction and move our mind to new thoughts.
- 4:07Now let me just say I wish I was better at these things.
- 4:10I wish I was better at some of these minor inconveniences is
- 4:14what they become. They're not a worldwide famine,
- 4:18but driving in Newark, NJ is no minor inconvenience, and
- 4:23something that I value is important to me is being on
- 4:27time. Not just being on time, But for
- 4:30me, being on time is early 15 minutes.
- 4:34So I'm headed to this. Rehearsal dinner or rehearsal?
- 4:38It was actually the rehearsal 1st and then the dinner and
- 4:41we're driving in and we leave with enough time and everything.
- 4:45But for some reason the people in New Jersey, when they build
- 4:51highways, they put a a curb down the middle of them, a literal
- 4:57concrete curb on the left hand side.
- 5:01They call that the Express and it will get you to the airport
- 5:05with no stops. And no, no off ramps.
- 5:08If you want any off ramps you need to be on the right hand
- 5:12side and you say Ed, I don't really care.
- 5:16Well, I didn't either until I needed to be on the right hand
- 5:19side. And I watched the exit passed me
- 5:23by and I'm like, Oh no, what am I going to do?
- 5:25And I'm getting all stressed out about it.
- 5:27And Marie's all stressed out, but not as much as I am because
- 5:30she's trying to calm me down. The only reason she's all gone
- 5:33want to say, is Marie. Hi, Marie.
- 5:35How are you? You weren't.
- 5:36You weren't as stressed out as me, but I was raising the stress
- 5:40level in the car and the water was raising a little bit And
- 5:43she's like, oh, and then she's going to because I told her I
- 5:45already have. Siri, I don't need your voice
- 5:47telling me how to drive to. Yeah.
- 5:54I didn't use those exact words, but something along those lines.
- 5:58So I didn't have her help and I missed the off ramp and we took
- 6:01us all the way to the airport. You have to go all the way to
- 6:03the airport and I'll come all the way back and come all the
- 6:06way through. And then there's traffic and on
- 6:08and on and on. But you know, the Lord was
- 6:11bringing those circumstances about to humble me humbly for my
- 6:14wife. Humble me before the Lord.
- 6:17Humble me to I I don't like getting a phone call.
- 6:20Hey, where are you? And I'm on the phone.
- 6:23You know how it sounds in your car.
- 6:25And I'm like, he thought I was joking And I'm like, yeah, it
- 6:28says I'm going to be there in 1/2 hour or whatever and then
- 6:30just click and they're all waiting for me when I walk in
- 6:33and I'm humbled before the wedding party and circumstances.
- 6:37Do you guys ever have circumstances?
- 6:40I wish I was better at them. Some I'm very well.
- 6:42I mean some I passed the test. And others, the Lord reminds me
- 6:47of the unexpected because our basic human tendency, or in that
- 6:52little illustration I share with you, is, hey, I know where I'm
- 6:55going. I checked the map, I checked the
- 6:57time. I know I left enough margin to
- 6:59get there, but I the Siri and the maps didn't tell me there's
- 7:03a stinking curb in the middle of the highway, and I didn't find
- 7:08that out until afterwards. And things you can't prepare
- 7:11for. Our basic human tendency is to
- 7:14get so comfortable, so at ease. Perhaps you could describe it so
- 7:19it self-centered, such a routine in life, like Jacob here.
- 7:25I know it doesn't seem like much, but what was Jacob used
- 7:28to? Eating?
- 7:31Eating when he wanted to? Food for the animals?
- 7:35Waking up? Some of the things that we get
- 7:37upset about, he was used to. Wake up, take a shower, brush my
- 7:41teeth, go to work, be upset, come home, you know, take a
- 7:45shower, go to bed. The things that we begin to
- 7:47despise until you don't have that job anymore and all.
- 7:52Now how am I going to pay the bills and what am I going to do
- 7:54next? And what what does the Lord have
- 7:56for us? And of course, this is a little
- 7:58more serious than a drive in Newark, NJ, but God is always
- 8:02allowing things to stir up our comfort.
- 8:05You can jot it down in Jeremiah chapter 48 and verse 11 it says.
- 8:09Moab has been at ease from his youth.
- 8:12He settled on his dregs, and he hasn't been emptied from vessel
- 8:16to vessel, nor has he gone into captivity.
- 8:20Therefore his taste remains in him and his scent has not
- 8:23changed. We can be like Moab at times.
- 8:27We just settle down. We're not being poured from
- 8:30vessel to vessel to take away the impurities of the refining
- 8:34process, in this case of making wine, not having that.
- 8:39Vulnerability of being poured from vessel to vessel.
- 8:42And so God will use these circumstances to get our
- 8:45attention. We learned last time in chapter
- 8:4741 and verse seven that this was a worldwide famine.
- 8:53It was a severe time. It covered the whole known world
- 8:56and that really touched my heart.
- 8:59It really touched my heart as I was studying because God is
- 9:01moving on the face of the earth today, not just Aurora.
- 9:05Aurora is important to us, but God is working in Denver.
- 9:08He's working in Bennett. He's, he's working in Fort
- 9:10Collins. He's working in towns we don't
- 9:12even know about, haven't even seen yet.
- 9:15He's working in Thailand and in Romania.
- 9:17He's working in Uganda and Mexico and Peru and administered
- 9:22to my heart as I was reviewing the notes thinking, man, I'm so
- 9:25blessed to be a part of a church that's not just some corner
- 9:28church that has no vision for the lost, that has no
- 9:32willingness to invest. Their time, their talents, their
- 9:36treasures to what matters. That we're not part of a church
- 9:40that's just interested in keeping the status quo but
- 9:43really wanting to step out and try things.
- 9:45And what Pastor Chuck would have used to teach us and we've made
- 9:49our own. That we would take ventures of
- 9:51faith and we would lay it all on the line and allow God to do
- 9:55something fresh and new, even in the face of failure and learning
- 10:00from our failure. And we see so many saved.
- 10:04We need to be careful because the cares of today, the cares of
- 10:07Aurora can easily take our attention off the world.
- 10:10But then so can the world take our attention off Aurora.
- 10:13Right It it is the the pattern of ministries will be reminded
- 10:17this weekend is action Chapter one, verse eight.
- 10:20You want to be faithful? Jerusalem, Home base, Judea,
- 10:24Samaria and to the other most parts of the earth.
- 10:26God's desires for all of it, not just part of it.
- 10:31And we'll look at that a little bit deeper this weekend.
- 10:32Verse 3. So Joseph's 10 brothers went
- 10:36down to buy grain in Egypt, and Jacob did not send Joseph's
- 10:39brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said less.
- 10:42Some calamity befall him, you know, it's a 250 mile journey or
- 10:46so. And the sons of Israel went to
- 10:48buy grain among those who sojourn for the famine was in
- 10:52the land of Canaan. And even though out of
- 10:56desperation and out of great personal need, they're still
- 11:02exercising faith here. Jacob says he says that he
- 11:08heard. It says in verse two.
- 11:12I have heard. He doesn't know.
- 11:16He just heard. And it moved him to action.
- 11:20It moved him. He didn't have absolute truth
- 11:25and facts on this that we know of.
- 11:27He heard and on that heard, on that, on what he heard, he
- 11:31stepped out in faith. It reminded me of Romans.
- 11:33Chapter 10 and verse 17. Remember, faith comes by hearing
- 11:38and hearing by the word of God. Anytime you open the Bible, it's
- 11:40going to stir up faith in you. It's going to stir up faith in
- 11:44what you're going through. It's going to stir up faith and
- 11:46loving others, going to stir up faith in your abide.
- 11:48It's going to stir up faith. That's where faith grows.
- 11:52You hear a promise of God, the truth of God, and you act upon
- 11:55it. And when you act upon it, then
- 11:57your faith is even built up more where you learn that faith
- 12:01without works is dead. And so faith with works is what?
- 12:05Alive. It's alive.
- 12:08And God is continuing to grow us through that life.
- 12:13Jacob, though, and verse 4 still has a big problem.
- 12:17He hasn't learned his lesson yet.
- 12:19He still has this sense of favoritism.
- 12:22He still has a new favorite son now.
- 12:25Benjamin, the only other son born to Rachel, Jacob's one true
- 12:30love. And in some ways.
- 12:33God is still dealing with him on this.
- 12:35Still going deep. It was almost it's almost like
- 12:39Dad was saying here you guys go, who cares if anything happens to
- 12:42you? But don't take Benjamin because
- 12:43I don't want him hurt. Same old thing, same old reason.
- 12:47Verse 6. Now Joseph was governor over all
- 12:50the land. And again, don't we just read
- 12:52over that? I was going to read over right
- 12:54to the verse 8. But let's not read over it so
- 12:56quickly. Where is Joseph?
- 12:59Is he in the pit? Stay with me.
- 13:02Is he in prison? Is he in the palace?
- 13:06How? By the will of God.
- 13:09If we were earlier, earlier chapters and we said, hey, is,
- 13:12is Joseph in the pit, we would have to say yes.
- 13:16And then I would say by the will of God and we like yes.
- 13:21And oh, by the way, was Joseph in prison?
- 13:23And that section of Scripture you have to say yes, by the will
- 13:27of God, I guess. You know, was he forgotten in
- 13:31prison? And then we were in that seven.
- 13:33Yes, by the will of God. Stop it, Pastor.
- 13:39But you see how quick it is. Yes, he's in the palace and he
- 13:43is, and it's Okay to celebrate that.
- 13:47It's okay at the same time realize it's all the will of
- 13:52God. Easy to say for Joseph, but it's
- 13:56true for us too, isn't it? It's all the will of God.
- 14:00We may not understand why and we may understand when we we may
- 14:04not. It may not be revealed to us for
- 14:07years why we went through what we went through, but it's by the
- 14:09will of God. I've been doing a lot of
- 14:13thinking on this for the last many years now, but having to
- 14:16redefine biblically what failure really is, is failure taking a
- 14:23step of faith and it not working out the way you wanted.
- 14:26Well, some people call it that, but.
- 14:28I think failure would be not doing it at all.
- 14:31Not being faithful, that's failure.
- 14:34But maybe God would lead you to a place where you can learn it
- 14:37leads you to a decision or lead you to a situation or like so
- 14:40that you would fail. Certainly allowing
- 14:44circumstances. So you find yourself in a
- 14:47position, even using your own behavior, the behavior of your
- 14:50dad or something along the lines like hey man, look, Joseph's in
- 14:53all these situations, but it's all by the will of God.
- 14:56But this is a turn of turn of events.
- 14:58This is an amazing turn of events.
- 15:00He is now governor verse 6, and it was he who sold all the
- 15:03people of the land. And Joseph's brother came and
- 15:07bowed down before him with their faces to the earth, And Joseph
- 15:10saw his brothers and recognized them.
- 15:14What an emotional moment that must have been.
- 15:17But he acted as a stranger to them and spoke roughly to them.
- 15:22And he said to them, where do you come from?
- 15:24And they said from the land of Canaan to buy food.
- 15:27So Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not
- 15:30recognize him. That makes sense.
- 15:32He was a very young kid when they threw him into the pit.
- 15:35Years have passed. He's unrecognizable.
- 15:37And on top of that, he is dressed like an Egyptian.
- 15:41He's living the Egyptian life. He does not look like a son of
- 15:46Jacob in that outward appearance.
- 15:49And Can you imagine what is going through his mind right
- 15:52now? Here he is in his late 30s.
- 15:56And they're his brothers. He haven't, he hasn't seen them
- 15:58for years. On top of everything that they
- 16:01did. And he speaks roughly to them.
- 16:05Verse seven, you're like, why? Perhaps it's a test, seeing how
- 16:11they respond. He remembers their attitudes and
- 16:15their jealousy. And we'll see throughout the
- 16:17study that he's going to be testing them a lot.
- 16:20God is going to use them, use Joseph for these tests in their
- 16:24life. Notice verse 9.
- 16:27Then Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed
- 16:31about them, and said to them, you are spies.
- 16:35You have come to see the nakedness of the land.
- 16:38And they said to him, No, my Lord, but your servants have
- 16:40come here to buy food. We are all one man's son.
- 16:43We are honest men. Your servants are not spies.
- 16:47And the dreams. This is what got him in trouble.
- 16:51The dreams. It wasn't the dreams that got
- 16:52him in trouble, It was how he delivered the interpretation and
- 16:56how he shared. But again, he's a kid.
- 16:58He doesn't know he's sharing him the way he they received, but
- 17:01they would. His family was offended by them,
- 17:04and through the offense, he paid the price for their offense.
- 17:09But they're coming true. If they only knew, even as his
- 17:14dreams were one of the reasons they hated him so much.
- 17:17But it was those dreams that are coming true right in there.
- 17:20Remember in Genesis 37, just by way of review, they said to one
- 17:24another, look, this dreamer is coming, and now we Fast forward
- 17:28to Chapter 42 and look, the dreamers in control and you're
- 17:32coming to him. The Lord has a way of turning
- 17:38things around. I was just listening to This
- 17:41Week, either yesterday or the day before.
- 17:43Pastor Chuck talking about Pastor Chuck Smith talking about
- 17:48defending yourself. Defending yourself when
- 17:52accusations come and things come and you just have that tendency
- 17:55to want to defend yourself. And he said.
- 17:57And we've adopted it pretty much.
- 17:58I've tried to adopt it as much as I can.
- 18:00I I want to choose not to defend myself but allow the Lord to be
- 18:04my defender. But God will say, if you want to
- 18:06do it, you can. But I make a poor defender
- 18:10compared to the resources of God.
- 18:13I just keep my mind and my eyes on my character and my
- 18:16integrity. Let the Lord take care of the
- 18:18rest. And here Joseph, perhaps even by
- 18:22choice, doesn't have a chance to defend himself but God.
- 18:26He does defend him, and he's standing there and accusing them
- 18:30of spies and drawing out even in verse 10, notice they said to
- 18:34him, No, my Lord, but your servants have come to buy to buy
- 18:39food. We are all one man's sons.
- 18:42We are honest men, and your servants are not spies.
- 18:48Verse 11 I just Again, you read too quickly here.
- 18:52I just want you to see at this stage in their life, after all
- 18:55they've been through, they're still dishonest men.
- 19:00They're not honest men. They might be trying to describe
- 19:03this one little event, but they're not honest men.
- 19:07They're liars and they've lived with a lie for many years, a
- 19:11very difficult, deep, horrific lie that perpetrated within
- 19:16their family. Verse 12.
- 19:19But he said to them, no, but you have come to see the nakedness
- 19:21of the land. And they said, your servants are
- 19:2312 brothers, one man in the land of Canaan.
- 19:27And in fact the youngest is with our father today.
- 19:29And no, and one is no more. They didn't forget about Joseph,
- 19:35did they? Not One minute of one day, of
- 19:41one week, of one month, did they forget what they did to Joseph.
- 19:44They learn to live with it. They learn to dismiss it.
- 19:47They learned how to cope with their own sin, but they haven't
- 19:51forgotten it. That's just the consequences of
- 19:54sin, man. It Burrows so deep in the back
- 19:56of their minds they have not forgotten about Joseph, talking
- 19:59about the one that was no more. And at this point, Joseph is
- 20:04leading them along, bringing out information of them spiking
- 20:07their conscience. I don't know how much Joseph
- 20:09knows exactly what he's doing, but as we look back, we can see
- 20:13it a little clearer. Joseph is not merely toying with
- 20:16them, but drawing them to a deeper revelation of the
- 20:19situation at hand, prepping them what we know at the end in
- 20:25Genesis 50, that deliverance speech, that that declaration of
- 20:29love, that forgiveness that's extended.
- 20:33He's very careful and very precise to dig deeper to an open
- 20:37wound that's been closed and covered for many years.
- 20:40Verse 14, Joseph said to them. It is as I spoke to you.
- 20:44You are spies. In this manner you shall be
- 20:47tested by the life of Pharaoh. You shall not leave this place
- 20:50unless your youngest brother comes here.
- 20:54Verse 16. Send one of you, and let him
- 20:56bring your brother, and it show he you shall be kept in prison,
- 21:00that your words may be tested to see whether there's any truth in
- 21:03you, or else by the life of Pharaoh.
- 21:06Surely you are spies. So he put them all together in
- 21:10prison three days. Now he really wants to see his
- 21:14little brother. He really wants to test and draw
- 21:17out their faith and their commitment and the reality of
- 21:21the situation, and he gives them a few days to think about it in
- 21:24prison. Verse 18.
- 21:26Then Joseph said to him the third day, Do this and live.
- 21:28For I fear God, if you are honest men, let one of the
- 21:34brothers be confined to your prison house.
- 21:36But you go and carry grain for the famine of your houses.
- 21:39Bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words will be
- 21:42verified and you shall not die. And they did so.
- 21:45Then they said to one another, We are truly guilty concerning
- 21:48our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he
- 21:51pleaded with us, and we would not hear.
- 21:54Therefore this distress has come upon us.
- 22:00And Ruben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying,
- 22:03do not send against the boy, and you would not listen.
- 22:06Therefore, behold, his blood is now required of us.
- 22:11But they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he
- 22:14spoke to them through an interpreter, and he turned
- 22:17himself away from them, and wept.
- 22:20And he returned to them again and talked with them, and he
- 22:22took Simeon from them and bound them before their eyes.
- 22:29Joseph has a plan. Leave one in prison, take some
- 22:33grain back to your dad. And by the way, bring back your
- 22:36youngest brother. And the plot gets thicker
- 22:40because for 20 years of an anguished heart, of a guilty
- 22:44conscience, of a tortured mind, it all comes back to them.
- 22:49They've tried to forget it. They tried to cover it up.
- 22:52They've tried. And so they start arguing in
- 22:54Hebrew before the Egyptian, not expecting the Egyptian to
- 22:58understand what they're saying, but oh, what a surprise.
- 23:01He knows their language and he knows exactly what the Lord.
- 23:06I mean what they're saying in their own language and he knows
- 23:10what they're thinking. Joseph understood every word,
- 23:15and you have to love Ruben. Here he jumps in in the
- 23:17argument. I told you guys, but his blood
- 23:21is required of us in Proverbs chapter 28 and verse 13.
- 23:25Let me read it to you. It says he who covers his sins
- 23:28will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will
- 23:33have mercy. And this is the lesson for us
- 23:36before we get to the rest of the text.
- 23:39This is the lesson you ready? Your sin will find you out.
- 23:46It may take weeks, or it may take months, or it may take
- 23:52years, but your sin will find you out.
- 23:58You can't cover it up and you can't dismiss it.
- 24:02You can't pretend you can't get away with it.
- 24:07They thought it was dealt with and taken care of.
- 24:11And in an instant of time, a global calamity hits Canaan and
- 24:17moves them to another place. And as they're moving to that
- 24:20place, God reveals the situation for what it is.
- 24:24I want you to mark this in your Bible is turn over to Numbers,
- 24:27chapter 32 and verse 23. I want to be careful to be
- 24:31honest to the text, because sometimes this passage is
- 24:34misinterpreted as if God is chasing you so that he can
- 24:38reveal your sin and he's going to catch up to you and you're
- 24:42running and you're getting away with it and you're hiding.
- 24:44That's not what the text says. It's not what God says.
- 24:47You see, God doesn't need to chase you down.
- 24:49He doesn't need to go through your closets.
- 24:51He doesn't need to flip through your phone or check what you've
- 24:54been deleted or your last phone that you threw.
- 24:56He doesn't need any of that. God knows already he's not
- 25:02human, that he has to find things out.
- 25:06No, what happens is is that your sin finds you out.
- 25:11It's constant and continual. Numbers 32.
- 25:13Notice verse 23, numbers 32 and verse 23.
- 25:19The warning is if you do not do so, then take note you have
- 25:22sinned against the Lord and be sure your sin will find you out.
- 25:29All that's hidden, all that's behind closed doors, all that
- 25:33you think we've got, you've gotten away with.
- 25:36And it's always a tragic mistake to think that we can sin against
- 25:39God and get away with it. God, He's faithful to send the
- 25:45Holy Spirit to bring conviction of sin, and He's faithful to
- 25:49send men and women like Nathan to declare some hidden sin.
- 25:54And God is faithful to open up His word.
- 25:56And as you're reading the word, you go, Oh my, that's me.
- 25:58I need to come back to the Lord. But for those that run away and
- 26:02those that want to hide, those that want to pretend it hasn't
- 26:05happened or maybe. And we've seen this many times
- 26:08where a couple will come in and there's sin in the past and the
- 26:12offending party, they were counseled at another church.
- 26:15Don't you ever tell anybody. Don't you ever tell anybody.
- 26:17And they come up after service and they're all jacked up and
- 26:20you can see it. They're carrying the weight of
- 26:22unconfessed sin. They're carrying the weight.
- 26:24And I'm like, bro, you've got to confess that they go, oh, no, I
- 26:28can't. You don't understand.
- 26:29It'll just destroy everything. And I'm like, well, what are you
- 26:31living with now? In a lie?
- 26:34What do you think is going to be?
- 26:35What's being destroyed is the lie, life of lies that you're
- 26:39living, which is far worse than the original sin.
- 26:45We learned this in our church many years ago after going
- 26:48through some real great difficulties.
- 26:50We became it became a part of our lives, a part, a banner
- 26:53scripture, that if we walk in the light, as he is in the
- 26:56light, we have fellowship with one another.
- 27:00And the blood of Jesus Christ will cleanse us from all sin.
- 27:04We have to walk in the light and allowing God to reveal what is
- 27:08necessary. Look, look, this is this is a
- 27:11situation where they're not going to get away with it.
- 27:14But I want you to notice something.
- 27:15Being revealed like that is not for the sake of their
- 27:18destruction. It's for the sake of their
- 27:20restoration. God wants to redeem from sin.
- 27:24God wants to repair from sin. God wants to forgive you of your
- 27:28sin. It's your hiding it.
- 27:31Sin upon sin is what's destroying you.
- 27:34Sin upon sin, Be sure of this. Nothing is hidden before God.
- 27:42And why are they bringing it up now?
- 27:45What did Joseph say exactly? Why are they bringing it up now?
- 27:49They just came for grain. We're hungry.
- 27:52Well, they're bringing it up now because they took it with them
- 27:54everywhere they went. How could they not talking about
- 27:59another favorite of dad and they remember what they did to the
- 28:03first day favorite of dad? And how could they not?
- 28:08They knew in their hearts like I was bringing it to the surface
- 28:14and they agreed together that they were truly guilty.
- 28:19And I don't want God in my life. I don't want God to have to deal
- 28:22so deeply in my heart to bring about the wickedness in my heart
- 28:2515 years from now. I want to stay moldable, and I
- 28:31want to be shaped by the spirit of God.
- 28:34I want my sins. I don't want my sins and
- 28:36mistakes to stack up relationally in my marriage with
- 28:40my kids in the church. I don't want her to stack up and
- 28:44stack up and stack up. Before you know it, I'm
- 28:47destroyed. And So what do we pray?
- 28:49And you need to pray this openly.
- 28:51You need to mean it in Psalm 139.
- 28:53Search me, oh God and know my heart.
- 28:56Try me and know my anxieties and then see if there's any wicked
- 29:01way in me so that you can lead me in the way of everlasting.
- 29:06You know the Holy Spirit soap that cleanses away is that
- 29:11Scripture? And 1st John if we confess our
- 29:13sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins and what
- 29:17cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 29:21They're having to deal with this now.
- 29:23Pick up with me. In verse 25, Joseph gave a
- 29:26command to fill their sacks with grain, to restore every man's
- 29:29money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey.
- 29:33Thus he did for them. So they loaded their donkeys
- 29:36with the grain and departed from there.
- 29:37But as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed at
- 29:40the encampment, he saw his money, and there it was in the
- 29:43mouth of his sack, and he said, my money has been restored and
- 29:47there it is in my sack. And then their hearts failed
- 29:50them and they were afraid saying to one another, what is this
- 29:54that God has done to us? They picked that up to by their
- 29:57they picked that phrase up blaming God from their dad.
- 30:03They picked that up from their dad.
- 30:04Unfortunately, what has God done to us, Joseph, He puts their
- 30:09money in. Normally unbelievers would be
- 30:14pretty excited about this. So I got all my groceries and my
- 30:18money too. It's the believer that goes back
- 30:21and says I'm sorry you mischarged me, I'm sorry your
- 30:24credit, my credit card didn't go through it.
- 30:27It's those of noble character, integrity, A majority of them
- 30:32being believers, not unbelievers.
- 30:34They they spent $1000 on something and they're walking
- 30:36away in the $1000 and up. Too bad.
- 30:39Finders, keepers, losers, weepers.
- 30:44And even in that statement they are acknowledging that because
- 30:49of their actions somebody's losing and they're happy about
- 30:51it. And so they're not in this place
- 30:55because they have a guilty conscience and they're guilty
- 30:58conscience. Joy and pleasure are soon turned
- 31:01into discouragement and fear and even misery, because guilt can
- 31:06have and ruin a person's outlook because she knows and he knows
- 31:11that he's done wrong and is just waiting to be caught and just
- 31:15waiting for it to come out. And the only way to get beyond
- 31:18that feeling is to harden your heart, which makes it even more
- 31:22miserable. Person, person, hardhearted.
- 31:25And then on top of that, if they're a believer with a
- 31:27hardened heart, such misery. If you don't handle your guilt
- 31:35correctly, church, by properly confessing and receiving
- 31:39forgiveness, you can end up very depressed.
- 31:42Corey Tamboom Corey 10. Boom.
- 31:44Put it this way and I quote the purpose of being guilty is to
- 31:47bring us to Jesus. Once we are there, then its
- 31:50purpose is finished. If we continue to make ourselves
- 31:53guilty, to blame ourselves, then that is synonym of itself.
- 31:59God uses guilt to get us to him, so we confess it and forsake it
- 32:03and move on. Well, Simeon's in jail.
- 32:06Verse 29. They went in.
- 32:08They went to Jacob, their father in the land of Canaan, and told
- 32:10him all that had happened, saying the man who is Lord of
- 32:13the land spoke roughly to us and took us for spies.
- 32:16But we said to him, we're honest men.
- 32:17We're not spies. We're twelve brothers, sons of
- 32:20your father. One is no more, and the youngest
- 32:22is with our father this day in the land of Canaan.
- 32:25Then the man, the Lord of the country, said to us by this I'll
- 32:28know that you're honest men. Leave one of your brothers here
- 32:30with me. Take food for the famine of your
- 32:32household and be gone. Bring your youngest brother to
- 32:35me, so that I shall know that you are not spies, but that you
- 32:38are honest men, and I will deliver your brother to you, and
- 32:41you may trade in the land. Then it happened, verse 35, as
- 32:44they emptied their sacks, that surprisingly each men's bundle
- 32:48of money was in his sack. And when both they and their
- 32:51father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.
- 32:54Jacob, their father said to them, You have bereaved me of my
- 32:58children. Joseph is no more, Simeon is no
- 33:01more. And now they want to take
- 33:03Benjamin away. And here where did they learn?
- 33:06Where did the boys learn this from?
- 33:08In their house, all these things are against me, which couldn't
- 33:14be farther from the truth. This couldn't be more untrue,
- 33:23because the facts are All these things are for you, Jacob, every
- 33:29single one of them. And that's how we see life
- 33:32sometimes. We're so wrapped up in emotion
- 33:34and circumstances and difficulties that we fail to see
- 33:38the faithfulness of God. And we turned, as you know, hey,
- 33:42all this is against me. No, Jacob, it's not.
- 33:45It's not against you, It's for you.
- 33:48But he's also devastated, emotional, sorting things
- 33:52through. You remember Jacob's name was
- 33:56changed to Israel, and you see his name interchange many times,
- 34:00not every time. When he's revealed in the
- 34:03scriptures as Jacob, he's usually reflective of the
- 34:06fleshly side, not Israel, the one governed by God, the one
- 34:12that was broken by God, the one that surrendered Israel.
- 34:15Now here he's Jacob, still trying to figure it all out, and
- 34:19he's come to the wrong conclusion, worried about
- 34:22himself. Everything is against me.
- 34:24Well, I thought you were getting food for your family.
- 34:27I thought you were trying to take care of your family, Jacob.
- 34:29But when it comes down to it, it's all about you and it's very
- 34:32untrue. If he would only see with the
- 34:34eyes of faith the loss of Joseph, his messed up kids, the
- 34:38famine, the money is sending a Benjamin.
- 34:41They're all for him to help protect him and bless him.
- 34:46He's begun a good work as Paul said.
- 34:48Remember in Philippines chapter one, that he who's begun a good
- 34:51work in you is faithful to complete it till the day of
- 34:53Jesus Christ. So no matter what happens along
- 34:57the way, I realize this is challenging because these
- 35:01situations are very hard and very difficult, and they
- 35:04whatever your personality is, it gets inflamed to be above faith,
- 35:08to be above trusting God. And yet God still remains
- 35:12faithful. He hasn't forgotten you.
- 35:14He's working it out, putting it together, making you the man,
- 35:18making you the woman that he wants you to be.
- 35:22Well, in verse 37, Ruben spoke to his father saying, kill my
- 35:27two sons. That's a great solution, Ruben.
- 35:30If I don't bring him back to you, put him in my hands and I
- 35:33will bring him back to you. See what?
- 35:35They're just all messed up. Because when you're messed up,
- 35:37you come up with dumb ideas. This is just dumb.
- 35:40I mean, it could be hyperbole. Of course he could be
- 35:42exaggerating, but it's just dumb.
- 35:44Yeah, Kill my kids if I don't like.
- 35:45Stop it. Why isn't Jacob going?
- 35:49You know what? I need to get away.
- 35:51I need to seek the Lord. I need I, even if I have to
- 35:54wrestle with him and he jacks my other hip up.
- 35:56I need the Lord. But he just lets it go.
- 36:00It's like And he said, my son shall not go down with you verse
- 36:0438, for his brother is dead and he's left alone.
- 36:07If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you
- 36:10go, you would bring down my Gray hair with sorrow to the grave.
- 36:18I understand that. Actually, that last part, I
- 36:21understand it very well. After my son passed away, one of
- 36:23the greatest fears was somehow what happened to my other kids.
- 36:27And then I start seeing your kids and your babies.
- 36:29And there was just this attack on the mind of it hurts.
- 36:33I get that. I can understand that.
- 36:37It's a deep fear and concern. He's also not taking God into
- 36:43account, and I can relate to that as well.
- 36:47He's not walking in faith here. And I don't mean super.
- 36:50You know, Christian cliche faith, just trusting the Lord,
- 36:54just taking it to the Lord, just leading his family initially.
- 37:00Jacob does refuse. He does harden his heart.
- 37:03My son will not go. But we see things change.
- 37:07We see God continuing to do that work.
- 37:12And God is just revealing to us in this chapter His great love
- 37:15for us even. And how messed up we are.
- 37:18How upside down. If you meet him, if you respond
- 37:21to him, you come to him, you confess your sin to him.
- 37:24He's ready to work in your life. He's ready to rework in your
- 37:27life. He's ready to restore in your
- 37:29life. He's ready to redo things.
- 37:32He's ready to help you overcome if you'll come to him the right
- 37:35way. You see, you can't come to God
- 37:36on your own terms. You can't work a deal and come
- 37:41to God with that deal. The only way that you and I can
- 37:45come to God the Father is through the blood of Jesus
- 37:48Christ, his Son. There is no other way.
- 37:52You can make up ways, and we have seen many false religions
- 37:55and cults, and you can come up with your own theologies.
- 37:58But God is not asking you to follow a theology.
- 38:01He's calling you to himself. He's not asking you to identify
- 38:07by the church you go to. He's calling you to you himself.
- 38:11He wants you to know him personally.
- 38:14He wants you to surrender your life to him personally.
- 38:17He wants so much for you that even know how far you and I have
- 38:21come to this point. You haven't even scratched the
- 38:23surface of the work that God is doing in your life.
- 38:27I mean, imagine that you go by that.
- 38:28I've come so far and it's just a scratch, man.
- 38:31It's just a small part. It's just like a speck of all
- 38:34that God wants to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you
- 38:37think are asked. And we hold on to sin like it's
- 38:40like a toy in the nursery. And never, you know those babies
- 38:43in the nursery. They have supernatural strength,
- 38:46man. They they will hold on to so toy
- 38:47and you can we don't do this. But you could swing them around
- 38:50like so far they'll never let go.
- 38:52And I've seen believers hold on to send like that and just hold
- 38:56on with supernatural strength. And pastors and friends are
- 38:59swinging you around and swinging you around and you're all dizzy
- 39:02and you're all messed up. But you won't let go.
- 39:06That's how the circumstances of life are They get you dizzy.
- 39:09You lose your equilibrium. You don't understand how God
- 39:12could ever use this. And yet God is getting you.
- 39:14He's asking you release. Let it go.
- 39:19Reach out. Trust me.
- 39:25Deal with the sense so it doesn't have to find you out.
- 39:29Deal with it. I sure the the vision that the
- 39:33Lord gave me today of that cup overflowing with water.
- 39:38And then I also saw another cup that was not overflowing with
- 39:41water, but all these little things were taking the attention
- 39:44away from it. And let that be a picture of
- 39:49your life today, especially you listening on the radio right
- 39:51now. A picture of your life.
- 39:53God has for you the overflowing life where you could have it
- 39:56all, literally, you can have it all in Christ.
- 39:59I know it's a big deal in the world that you can have it all.
- 40:01Yeah, you can have it all in Christ.
- 40:03He has a great life available to you.
- 40:05You can have it all church. You can have it all.
- 40:08You can have more than all. You don't even know more than
- 40:10all, yet you can still have it in Christ.
- 40:12Jesus said, You ask anything in my name, I'll give it to you.
- 40:15You ask anything in my name. According to my well, it's
- 40:17yours. When our lives are line up with
- 40:21Jesus, you can have it all. And so don't settle for what
- 40:25this world has to offer. Don't settle for the vain
- 40:28philosophies of this world. Don't settle for the way this
- 40:31world operates. Give yourself to the Lord and
- 40:34don't live a life where your sin will find you out.
- 40:39And today I imagine, and I sense revealed some things to bring
- 40:47you to himself. And I invite you to follow Jesus
- 40:51today with your life. Believers, I'm not going to give
- 40:54you some call for rededication or anything.
- 40:56I'm just going to ask you lay it aside and follow the Lord, lay
- 41:00it aside. You need to.
- 41:02Confess something. Confess it.
- 41:05I think it was Deal Moody that said he likes to keep short
- 41:07accounts. Keep short accounts.
- 41:12And if you're here today, you've never given your life to Jesus
- 41:14Christ. Well, you're the one I want to
- 41:16speak to. I want you to know that you can
- 41:19have it all, that God, your Creator, is calling you to
- 41:23himself. You can live the abundant life,
- 41:29the age abiding life, a life that transcends the pains and
- 41:33problems of this temporary life that the Bible describes like
- 41:41vapor and like grass that's cut down like the Bible describes.
- 41:51Life is so transient and temporary, and yet he offers an
- 41:56abundant life. And so God, we pray today that
- 41:59we could live the abundant life in you.
- 42:01Lord that we. Could rise to the occasion of
- 42:06living that exceedingly abundantly above all that we can
- 42:09think or ask life some today I just I believe they need to
- 42:13start asking again by faith. Some need to be thinking again
- 42:19by faith. They they need to even be
- 42:21praying about an overflowing cup claiming.
- 42:25The promise that if we come to you out of our innermost being
- 42:30will come rivers of living water, torrents of living water.
- 42:37We want that in our lives, Lord. We want that for the.
- 42:40Sake of our kids and our grandkids and our friends and
- 42:44our family and our church and our community.
- 42:50Such great tragedy and pain. And if you're.
- 42:54Here today. And you'd say, Ed, I want to
- 42:55follow Jesus. I want to come to God like you
- 42:59described it. Would you just stand to your
- 43:00feet today because I want to pray with you?
- 43:02This would be for someone that's never followed, never prayed to
- 43:06receive Jesus in your life before you know who you are and
- 43:09you know what God's been doing with you.
- 43:10Just like these brothers. Like, it's easier not to talk
- 43:14about sin. And it's easier not to talk
- 43:16about these things. I know, but it's harder to live
- 43:19life that way. And just fearful.
- 43:22Like, you know, but you don't know, Ed, what I've done.
- 43:26You're right. But I don't save you.
- 43:33But you don't understand that there might be great
- 43:35consequences. You're right.
- 43:38But God, can she even show mercy in that and help you, But it's
- 43:42not going to. Happen you have a much harder
- 43:44life apart from Christ. So today, if that's you, would
- 43:47you stand to your feet? I'd like to pray with you.
- 43:49I want to give you a point in time in your life where you can
- 43:52say that's the day I was born again, the day that I follow
- 43:55Jesus. The day where I obeyed the
- 43:58Bible. You don't even know the Bible
- 44:00yet, but I'm telling you, the Bible says if you confess with
- 44:03your mouth the Lord Jesus and you believe in your heart that
- 44:06God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 44:08So you know that part of the Bible.
- 44:10Now you know the part of the Bible that says that God loves
- 44:13you sin, His only begotten son to die for you go up.
- 44:16But I've never heard that before.
- 44:17Here's how you heard it. For God so love the world that
