- 0:24Speaker 2: of places you can listen. The UConn Plus channel. If
- 0:27Speaker 2: you go on a computer... They have the audio-only feed
- 0:31Speaker 2: that you get here, so lots of places that you
- 0:33Speaker 2: can listen to us, and we appreciate you doing that.
- 0:35Speaker 3: How many people in this room know where Gardner-Webb is?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Raise your hand.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Debbie, do you know where Gardner-Webb is?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Ohio, no. Anybody know?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Carolinas, isn't it?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's North Carolina. Yeah, okay. Gardner-Webb.
- 0:57Speaker 2: So we mentioned... What do you refer to as Giovanna?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Is it Yo or is it Pop?
- 1:03Speaker 1: What's your nickname? It depends what day it is, what
- 1:09Speaker 1: she just did. Okay. Hey, Yo, that makes sense. Yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 1: you know, it's.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Great for me because, you know, I'm from Philly, so
- 1:18Speaker 3: Yo is easy. But Morgan, I mean, Tanya for sure.
- 1:29Speaker 3: calls her pop.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Okay. So she's whatever, whatever you call her, she listens.
- 1:39Speaker 2: All right. Olivia Vukosi. We've got another live on this team.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Young lady who is from Croatia, Croatian descent, went to
- 1:48Speaker 2: Christ the King down in New York. A few good
- 1:50Speaker 2: players have come out of there that have played for
- 1:51Speaker 2: you and that didn't play for you. You know, Shamika Holdslaw,
- 1:55Speaker 2: Sue Bird, Tina Charles.
- 1:57Speaker 1: They turned out okay.
- 1:59Speaker 2: And it seems like she got herself in a really
- 2:02Speaker 2: good shape getting ready for this season. Obviously, post players
- 2:06Speaker 2: tend to take a little longer to develop for whatever
- 2:09Speaker 2: reason in college, get adjusted to it. Are you finding
- 2:12Speaker 2: that out here in the early part of the season?
- 2:15Speaker 2: And probably playing teams like you played in the first
- 2:17Speaker 2: three exhibitions certainly probably helps.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it does.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Those kids that come out of high school that have
- 2:26Speaker 3: dominated their their competition.
- 2:29Speaker 1: For, you know, three or four years.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Um, it's a real eye opener when they get to college, uh,
- 2:36Speaker 3: how physical you need to be, how, uh, how strong
- 2:40Speaker 3: the players are that you're playing against, how fast the
- 2:44Speaker 3: game is. Um, so it takes a little bit of
- 2:47Speaker 3: time to get adjusted to that. But, um, live is
- 2:51Speaker 3: really scared. I mean, really skilled, um, really skilled.
- 2:56Speaker 1: She's good.
- 2:57Speaker 3: She's got really good hands. She's a really good passer.
- 3:04Speaker 3: She's a good shooter. She's not as good a shooter
- 3:07Speaker 3: as she thinks she is. You know, she comes in
- 3:11Speaker 3: the game the other night. First time she touches the
- 3:16Speaker 3: ball in the corner.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Left corner, yep. She shoots up a brick.
- 3:23Speaker 3: So, yeah, but she's a good shooter, and she's– she
- 3:27Speaker 3: can get up and down the floor. She's, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 3: it's just now being more competitive every day, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 3: compete for everything every day. And that's the biggest hurdle. Um,
- 3:43Speaker 3: but you know, when she gets mad, she's a different
- 3:48Speaker 3: kind of player.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I just, in a good way. Oh yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 3: She, she, she gets really, really good when she gets mad. And, uh,
- 3:57Speaker 3: And I'm pretty good at making players mad.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yep. Yep.
- 4:01Speaker 2: What about Maureen Durses? I mean, we obviously haven't seen
- 4:04Speaker 2: her play yet. Young lady out of France.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Maureen hasn't played much all summer. Like, that's the thing.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Maureen and Blanca didn't play all summer. Maureen had an
- 4:20Speaker 3: issue in her foot. She had a screw placed in
- 4:23Speaker 3: her foot over in France. Something happened. Our people had
- 4:28Speaker 3: to go back in and put a different kind of
- 4:32Speaker 3: screw in. So she didn't get to play all summer.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Blanca didn't get to play all summer. But she scores points.
- 4:44Speaker 1: She's a scorer.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And I think she knows the game. I might go
- 4:55Speaker 3: out with a lineup. You know, Jenna, Blanca, Maureen, Giovanna.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Am I missing anybody? Sarah, she was born in Spain.
- 5:09Speaker 3: So we'll go with those guys.
- 5:11Speaker 2: The international lineup.
- 5:12Speaker 1: See what that looks like. All right.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I know I think after the first exhibition, you kind
- 5:18Speaker 2: of chatted and had fun with Olivia, saying that's the
- 5:21Speaker 2: best she has played considering practice. And we've had this
- 5:24Speaker 2: discussion before. the practice habits of the incoming freshmen. How
- 5:29Speaker 2: different is it from the kids coming from the U.S.
- 5:32Speaker 2: high school system, AAU ball, all that, versus the European,
- 5:36Speaker 2: the international system? Who gets acclimated quicker?
- 5:40Speaker 3: I don't know that there's a hard and fast rule.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I just know that the kids over there are coached harder.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Do they practice more?
- 5:56Speaker 3: They practice more. They play less games, but they practice more.
- 6:02Speaker 3: And so their skill level, their fundamentals are always really good.
- 6:14Speaker 3: And again, that's not all of them all the time,
- 6:18Speaker 3: but over there, the system is practice... Five days a week,
- 6:25Speaker 3: and you play a game. Sometimes you practice twice a day,
- 6:28Speaker 3: and you play a game on Saturday. Here, they practice
- 6:32Speaker 3: once a week, and they play five games on Saturday
- 6:34Speaker 3: and Sunday. Just totally opposite. You know, what are you
- 6:38Speaker 3: going to do? But, no, and they're coached hard. And
- 6:42Speaker 3: especially if you're a young kid that's played, you know,
- 6:45Speaker 3: you're 18, 19, and you're playing against 28, 29-year-olds. You know,
- 6:52Speaker 3: you see the game a little bit differently. and you
- 6:57Speaker 3: know you have to be good or you're not going
- 6:59Speaker 3: to play.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Right. That's all there is to it. All right, we'll
- 7:02Speaker 1: take a break.
- 7:03Speaker 2: We'll come back, and we will get into said schedule.
- 7:05Speaker 2: It's a doozy. All non-conference games before Christmas on the
- 7:09Speaker 2: UConn Women's Basketball Coaches Show live in Hartford on Learfield.
