- 2:16Speaker 3: a good friend, Adam Crayson from ZMM Architects and Engineers.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Good afternoon, sir, welcome to the show.
- 2:22Speaker 6: Hey, good morning, David.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I just said after that, Yeah, buddy, let me tell
- 2:25Speaker 3: you it is kind of difficult to keep the two shows.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I should just say hello, is what I should say,
- 2:31Speaker 3: not afternoon, or just just just just go hi, Adam.
- 2:34Speaker 3: How's it going good to see? All right, So you
- 2:36Speaker 3: guys got a pretty big honor I understand here name
- 2:40Speaker 3: one of the fastest growing firms in North America.
- 2:43Speaker 7: Talk about this, yes, certainly. Before I do, I just
- 2:46Speaker 7: want to echo your earlier comments. Our our thoughts and
- 2:49Speaker 7: prayers are with our you know, neighbors and friends in
- 2:51Speaker 7: Ohio County and Marion County this morning, and certainly all
- 2:54Speaker 7: of the family and friends of Doug's gaff. It's it's
- 2:56Speaker 7: certainly a difficult day and difficult time in West Virginia. Yeah,
- 2:59Speaker 7: but thank you for having me. Yeah, we're really excited
- 3:03Speaker 7: and we really think This is a recognition of our
- 3:06Speaker 7: clients and the employees of our firm. We're the twenty
- 3:08Speaker 7: six fastest growing architecture and engineering firm in the North America,
- 3:13Speaker 7: so US and CANAA.
- 3:14Speaker 6: We're really excited about it.
- 3:15Speaker 7: It's a we haven't sought these sort of recognitions for
- 3:18Speaker 7: the firm in the past. Somebody recommended we do and
- 3:21Speaker 7: we were excited to see that. We think it's exciting
- 3:25Speaker 7: for a firm in West Virginia to get this sort
- 3:26Speaker 7: of recognition.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, that's the first thing I thought was
- 3:29Speaker 3: here in West Virginia. And I'm to face it, we
- 3:31Speaker 3: don't always we don't always make the best list of things. Adam.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You know that as well as this is kind of
- 3:36Speaker 3: a big deal here.
- 3:37Speaker 7: This is a big deal, And like I said, it's
- 3:39Speaker 7: really it's a recognition of the confidence that our clients
- 3:42Speaker 7: have placed in us and the hard work of a
- 3:46Speaker 7: really dedicated team of professionals we have here in Charleston
- 3:49Speaker 7: throughout the region. How many people do you employ, Well,
- 3:52Speaker 7: during the summer, we employ a lot more because we
- 3:54Speaker 7: have eighteen interns this summer, so typically we're about seventy people.
- 3:57Speaker 7: Right now, we're up to almost ninety a really great
- 4:00Speaker 7: internship program that our team's put together, kind of spearheaded
- 4:04Speaker 7: by Jen Wood and Chris Campbell and some of our
- 4:06Speaker 7: engineering staff, John Pruett. They do a wonderful job trying
- 4:10Speaker 7: to create a really valuable experience, and one of the
- 4:14Speaker 7: things we do when they're here is really try to
- 4:16Speaker 7: get them plugged into the community. They've been over to
- 4:18Speaker 7: the Clay Center, they've toured the Woody Williams project over
- 4:20Speaker 7: in Cabell County. They'll get a chance to speak to
- 4:23Speaker 7: the mayor soon and other industry professionals. So we really
- 4:26Speaker 7: try to make it a valuable opportunity for them to
- 4:29Speaker 7: keep them here in West Virginia.
- 4:30Speaker 6: That's our goal. We want to turn these interns into
- 4:32Speaker 6: our next generation.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Well that's what we need. I mean, we got to
- 4:35Speaker 3: get people to stay here. You know. We get these
- 4:36Speaker 3: people you know in here, and I know that your
- 4:39Speaker 3: company and others have programs like this where you know, Okay,
- 4:41Speaker 3: the internship's nice, but we need you to stay.
- 4:43Speaker 6: That's right, that's the goal. We joke.
- 4:45Speaker 7: We've educated a lot of really great architects that live
- 4:48Speaker 7: in Lexington, Charlotte, and Columbus, and we're going to educate
- 4:51Speaker 7: the ones that are going to stay here.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And I mean, let's face it, Adam, you know you're
- 4:54Speaker 3: in the business. We got a lot of stuff going on.
- 4:57Speaker 3: There's a lot of building projects going on, not only
- 4:59Speaker 3: here in the canalv all over West Virginia right now.
- 5:01Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, we're grateful for the ones we're working on.
- 5:05Speaker 7: Of course, the Remicton office building, I think people are
- 5:07Speaker 7: going to see great progress soon as the steal starts
- 5:09Speaker 7: to come out of the ground there along the boulevard.
- 5:12Speaker 7: You know, the projects we've had the opportunity to assist
- 5:14Speaker 7: the county with the Shawnee the entrance building, welcome center expansion,
- 5:19Speaker 7: and you know South Charleston with the opportunity to help them,
- 5:22Speaker 7: you know, as part of their Tift District to ultimately
- 5:24Speaker 7: replace the wellness center over there. So lots of exciting
- 5:27Speaker 7: projects and I think that's what's really fueled the growth
- 5:30Speaker 7: that led us to be on this list, is just
- 5:32Speaker 7: the forward thinking attitude of so many of our leaders.
- 5:36Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:36Speaker 7: One of the biggest, which we're wrapping up the Designer
- 5:38Speaker 7: right now, the news Consolidated State Laboratory building that's going
- 5:41Speaker 7: to be over at the West Virginia Regional Tech Park
- 5:43Speaker 7: and it's their investment in West Virginia that that really
- 5:47Speaker 7: helped us to land on this list. And we're very
- 5:50Speaker 7: grateful for all of those opportunities.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Talking to Adam Creasing again from ZMM architect and Architects
- 5:55Speaker 3: and Engineers. Let's come back to this, to this specific firm,
- 6:00Speaker 3: the specific list, I guess from this from this group.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And you said you didn't really campaign for this, so
- 6:05Speaker 3: I guess it's just people that are on this that
- 6:07Speaker 3: are that are just keep an eye on what you're doing.
- 6:10Speaker 4: I guess.
- 6:11Speaker 7: So the Zoik Group is an industry leader. They have
- 6:14Speaker 7: a publication that a lot of people in the architecture,
- 6:16Speaker 7: engineering and construction industry follow, and they have various lists,
- 6:20Speaker 7: you know, hot firms, good firms to work for, you know,
- 6:23Speaker 7: these sort of things. They host a lot of trainings
- 6:26Speaker 7: for throughout the industry. And we did we did apply
- 6:29Speaker 7: for it, so there was an application required, but we
- 6:31Speaker 7: hadn't really sought these out in the past, right, Okay,
- 6:33Speaker 7: I guess. And somebody encouraged us this here. They said,
- 6:35Speaker 7: you know, you guys are really you know, you appear
- 6:37Speaker 7: to be doing well. You know, it's it's really objectively based.
- 6:42Speaker 7: It's based on revenue growth over a period of time.
- 6:44Speaker 7: And so we submitted an application, and again we were
- 6:49Speaker 7: really a surprised as anyone. We hoped to be included
- 6:51Speaker 7: on the list. We thought that'd be a great showing.
- 6:53Speaker 7: But to be included is number twenty six out of
- 6:55Speaker 7: one hundred of the fastest growing firms in North America.
- 6:58Speaker 6: Was it just blew us away a little bit.
- 7:00Speaker 7: And again, none of this is possible without without the
- 7:04Speaker 7: people that are providing us the opportunities to help them,
- 7:08Speaker 7: you know, with these building projects, and of course, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 7: a really committed group of clients because our employees, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 7: we didn't We've organically grown the firm, right, we're more
- 7:18Speaker 7: of a regional firm now. We have offices in Marietta
- 7:20Speaker 7: and Blacksburg and Martinsburg as well as here in Charleston.
- 7:23Speaker 7: But we accommodated this growth, in this growth and service
- 7:26Speaker 7: to our clients without some explosion in staff, right, because
- 7:30Speaker 7: it's hard to find people in talent in West Virginia.
- 7:32Speaker 7: So it's meant our teams really just stepped up to
- 7:34Speaker 7: provide services on all these exciting projects.
- 7:37Speaker 3: But Dave Alan show and find viny Live is brought
- 7:39Speaker 3: to you ampart by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston
- 7:41Speaker 3: Dirty Birds. Birds are off tonight. They begin a long
- 7:43Speaker 3: road trip tomorrow night against Southern Maryland and I'm back
- 7:46Speaker 3: to ballpark up until the twenty seventh of June. For tickets,
- 7:49Speaker 3: promotion and schedules, merchandise and more, visit Dirtybirds baseball dot com.
- 7:53Speaker 3: And again, Adam, I just think it's really I keep
- 7:55Speaker 3: going back to this. It's really really cool. I'm bringing
- 7:57Speaker 3: the now, how do you pronounce the group? Wig Group? Okay,
- 8:01Speaker 3: just like it looks. The CEO from the Zwig Group
- 8:05Speaker 3: said that this group, that this list was a reflection
- 8:09Speaker 3: of the strength and resilience of the architectural community, and
- 8:14Speaker 3: these companies have achieved remarkable growth while navigating market shift,
- 8:17Speaker 3: talent shortages, increase competition, et cetera. So again, that's that's
- 8:22Speaker 3: like the premier group that's coming out with this list.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I mean, it's really really is a cool thing for
- 8:27Speaker 3: a West Virginia, especially a Knawa Valley based company to
- 8:30Speaker 3: have this.
- 8:31Speaker 6: That's right.
- 8:31Speaker 7: Yeah, that's again, that's one of the reasons we were
- 8:33Speaker 7: so excited about it, Like you know, like you said earlier,
- 8:36Speaker 7: we all hate it in West Virginia when we end
- 8:39Speaker 7: up on these lists. You know, they highlight some negative
- 8:41Speaker 7: characteristic of the state. There are all kinds of wonderful
- 8:45Speaker 7: things going on in West Virginia, and we're just excited
- 8:48Speaker 7: to be part of many of those wonderful things.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Like is there like a big banquet you go to
- 8:52Speaker 3: or something there red tie or black tie event or yeah, yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 3: unfortunately we couldn't get them to have the banquet here,
- 8:58Speaker 3: but yeah, we're going to go down to Texas since
- 9:00Speaker 3: September and accept the award and we're really excited about that. Okay,
- 9:03Speaker 3: all right, Well it sounds like it's good stuff. And
- 9:05Speaker 3: again I think you folks are to be congratulated for everything.
- 9:09Speaker 3: But you've done. What's in the future. You talked about
- 9:10Speaker 3: some of the current projects you're working on. What can
- 9:13Speaker 3: you tell us about some future projects.
- 9:14Speaker 7: Yeah, we're always looking to what's next. You know, we
- 9:17Speaker 7: get that question a lot of you guys seem really busy,
- 9:19Speaker 7: and we're never busy enough because we're always planning. You know,
- 9:22Speaker 7: we're doing the work that's going to happen now and
- 9:24Speaker 7: we're planning for what's next. So some of the exciting
- 9:27Speaker 7: things that are going to come up well through construction
- 9:30Speaker 7: will be this laboratory project that's going to be a
- 9:32Speaker 7: tremendous facility and a great investment the state's making one
- 9:36Speaker 7: of the larger building construction projects. It's been undertaken in
- 9:39Speaker 7: the valley probably in the last twenty five years. And
- 9:43Speaker 7: then South Charleston of course, is planning ultimately to replace
- 9:46Speaker 7: the Wellness Center, and we're really excited to be helping
- 9:48Speaker 7: them with that. We also have some school projects throughout
- 9:51Speaker 7: the region. We're working with Putnham County on Hurricane Middle School.
- 9:54Speaker 7: We're working with Kenawa County on the new elementary school.
- 9:57Speaker 7: It's being built in eastern Kennawh County, a much much
- 9:59Speaker 7: needed project. You're so excited to see that investment being
- 10:02Speaker 7: made in eastern Knon County. And we continue to assist
- 10:05Speaker 7: at Capbell County with school projects and really school districts
- 10:08Speaker 7: throughout the state. It's really the focus of our practices,
- 10:12Speaker 7: the educational designs about half of the work we do.
- 10:14Speaker 3: So I'm gonna say that's kind of what you're I mean,
- 10:16Speaker 3: you're known for a lot of different projects, but that's
- 10:18Speaker 3: that's kind of your big thing, right.
- 10:19Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, you know, there's a few kind of specialty
- 10:21Speaker 7: things we do, and we have different people that lead
- 10:24Speaker 7: those parts of the firm. We do hire Edward Chris
- 10:26Speaker 7: Campbell's one of our architects and project managers who leads that.
- 10:29Speaker 7: Mike Phillips leads our medical team, and we do a
- 10:31Speaker 7: lot of work here for Vandalia Health and we do
- 10:34Speaker 7: work across the state in the medical field too. And
- 10:37Speaker 7: then the probably the most surprising recent addition to our
- 10:41Speaker 7: portfolio has been these community gathering spaces. Of course, one
- 10:44Speaker 7: of the early ones was out in Puntdam County where
- 10:47Speaker 7: we worked at Valley Park on their new visitor center
- 10:50Speaker 7: and the entrance to the wavepool. But the Charleston Coliseum
- 10:52Speaker 7: and convention Center, and now these plans for these athletic facilities,
- 10:57Speaker 7: you know, which are really wellness centers, which are really
- 10:59Speaker 7: community gathering faces too. So we really love those projects
- 11:02Speaker 7: because they have an economic development component to it in
- 11:05Speaker 7: terms of tourism, but at the same time they just
- 11:07Speaker 7: improve the quality of life for our neighbors, which they're
- 11:10Speaker 7: really the best projects.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Doing good stuff. Adam, I appreciate you taking time out
- 11:14Speaker 3: of your schedule to be here. What's the website if
- 11:15Speaker 3: people want to go see what you've done.
- 11:18Speaker 7: Yeah, we actually have it on our website. It's ZMM
- 11:20Speaker 7: dot com and we have a kind of where we'd
- 11:23Speaker 7: link to all the news articles and they're probably be
- 11:24Speaker 7: the easiest way to find it, all.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Right, Adam, congratulations again. It's always it's always great when
- 11:29Speaker 3: West Virginia can make some sort of a list in
- 11:31Speaker 3: a good way, and for a company that's based here,
- 11:34Speaker 3: and you say, I know you've got offices and other
- 11:36Speaker 3: other locations as well, but it's good stuff. Buddy, Thanks

- 14:46Speaker 3: You've been on the show before?
- 14:47Speaker 4: No, I haven't you now with you? Yes, you have
- 14:50Speaker 4: well on the air, but I mean they through the phone.
- 14:52Speaker 4: But okay, in person, Okay, now, I'm much more handsome
- 14:55Speaker 4: in person than I am on the phone.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Right there you go. Yeah, So what's going on with
- 14:59Speaker 3: the a big Juneteenth event? What is going on?
- 15:02Speaker 4: Well right now? Originally we won't have everything on one day.
- 15:08Speaker 4: We decided to move the festivities to Friday because we
- 15:14Speaker 4: weren't sure whether the governor will proclaim June tenth that's
- 15:18Speaker 4: a holiday. So of course he made it official last
- 15:21Speaker 4: week that he's not going to give state workers off.
- 15:23Speaker 4: So therefore we moved it to Friday, because again, we
- 15:27Speaker 4: want people to families and kids and I mean everybody
- 15:31Speaker 4: to celebrate with us about Juneteenth. And so again it
- 15:38Speaker 4: is very sacred, it's very special to us, to everybody
- 15:44Speaker 4: again to this country. And of course it's educational because
- 15:47Speaker 4: again a lot of people don't know about June tenth.
- 15:50Speaker 3: And that's and you're right, you're absolutely right about that,
- 15:53Speaker 3: because I mean, I've learned a lot about it over
- 15:55Speaker 3: the last couple of years, but there's still a lot
- 15:57Speaker 3: more to know. Explain June tenth for those who may
- 16:00Speaker 3: not know.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Okay, So in eighteen sixty three, President Lincoln came with
- 16:05Speaker 4: the Emancipation Proclamation for the Freedom of the slaves, and
- 16:10Speaker 4: between eighteen CC three and eighteen sixty five, slavery was
- 16:14Speaker 4: still in effect. But however freedom our Freedom Day in
- 16:18Speaker 4: West Virginia was eight was February third, eighteen sixty five. Again,
- 16:23Speaker 4: slavery was still going on until June nineteenth, eighteen sixty five,
- 16:27Speaker 4: in Galveston's Texas where a bunch of police officers they said, okay,
- 16:33Speaker 4: this is it because it was still going on. And
- 16:36Speaker 4: so now that's why how June teenth, June nineteenth became
- 16:41Speaker 4: where it is.
- 16:41Speaker 3: And Texas is again was the last area that this
- 16:45Speaker 3: was that this was still going on. And it took
- 16:47Speaker 3: It wasn't like it wasn't like now we just posted
- 16:49Speaker 3: on Facebook, you know who I mean.
- 16:50Speaker 4: It took.
- 16:50Speaker 3: It took time for the information to get.
- 16:53Speaker 4: To people, right, that's the thing. And so again it
- 16:56Speaker 4: wasn't no email or uh postal service, you know, the
- 17:00Speaker 4: it's kind of a pony express. But yeah, that was
- 17:02Speaker 4: back then.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, and you weren't there what you're saying, I
- 17:05Speaker 3: was not there? Okay, all right? But why is this
- 17:08Speaker 3: such a big deal because for years this has been
- 17:12Speaker 3: celebrated or I don't know, I celebrated or I guess
- 17:15Speaker 3: it's commemorated I guess is the right word within the
- 17:18Speaker 3: black community, and it wasn't really a big thing outside
- 17:22Speaker 3: the black community. Would you agree with that?
- 17:26Speaker 4: I understand what you're saying. And again, what people don't
- 17:31Speaker 4: realize is when America became America in seventeen seventy six,
- 17:36Speaker 4: we were still slaves. And if people will listen to
- 17:40Speaker 4: Frederick Douglas and it's on YouTube, what does July fourth
- 17:46Speaker 4: meaning to the negro because again it was still slaves
- 17:50Speaker 4: and so America became America by way of protest. However,
- 17:55Speaker 4: with with African Americans, again, you had to fight for
- 18:00Speaker 4: our freedom. And that's the thing. And so a lot
- 18:03Speaker 4: of people don't understand that. And so the history, the
- 18:08Speaker 4: history about that is we want folks to know what
- 18:12Speaker 4: took place. We're not trying to guilt or shame anybody,
- 18:19Speaker 4: but just let the records be known that this took place.
- 18:23Speaker 4: If and again, and listen, it's a black and white thing.
- 18:28Speaker 4: If we can learn white history, quote, why can we
- 18:31Speaker 4: learn black history? And again the banning of books CRT
- 18:39Speaker 4: and now the boogeyman is THEI why why? And again
- 18:45Speaker 4: I would love to have a dialogue, a little conversation
- 18:46Speaker 4: with anybody to talk about this. And again we need
- 18:49Speaker 4: to talk about this because it's not what you think.
- 18:54Speaker 4: People are putting out these scare tactics about DEI and
- 18:58Speaker 4: all this CRT is up again it's not like a
- 19:03Speaker 4: revolted anything. We just want everybody to come together. We
- 19:07Speaker 4: just want to get along and be treated equal.
- 19:09Speaker 3: And we're talking to Ray Whiting today. Violance showing five
- 19:12Speaker 3: of any Live is brought to you probably by Live Healthy
- 19:14Speaker 3: West Virginia, presented by WVU Medicine. Great podcast promoting healthier
- 19:17Speaker 3: lifestyles in the state. Check have related episodes wv metronews
- 19:20Speaker 3: dot Com into the podcast menu. Twenty twenty five, Ray,
- 19:25Speaker 3: You've got a little bit of age on you, not
- 19:27Speaker 3: not a whole lot. I mean, you're not much older
- 19:29Speaker 3: than I am. But twenty twenty five, how far have
- 19:31Speaker 3: we come? In your opinion, you're a black man in America,
- 19:34Speaker 3: how far have we come?
- 19:38Speaker 4: Given the fact that things have been repealed. We have
- 19:49Speaker 4: gone back twenty years.
- 19:50Speaker 3: We've gone back.
- 19:51Speaker 4: You say we've gone back twenty years. Yeah.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Expound upon that, well, maybe.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Further, because again the president has a re peeled the
- 20:05Speaker 4: band of segregation. So you look at things like banning
- 20:17Speaker 4: people from other countries to come here, and most of
- 20:23Speaker 4: all the situation with fifty nine people from South Africa
- 20:27Speaker 4: are coming here. And so again there's a lot that's
- 20:34Speaker 4: going on and again and of course there's a backstory
- 20:37Speaker 4: to it, and and that's what folks don't understand. And
- 20:43Speaker 4: of course with the media and as far as these
- 20:49Speaker 4: talking points, people just read the headlines, but they don't
- 20:52Speaker 4: read the guts of the story. That's why. And again,
- 20:55Speaker 4: and you've seen again you and I refriends on Facebook,
- 20:58Speaker 4: and I'm going to talk about it because again, if
- 21:00Speaker 4: it's not right, I'm going to mention it. But again,
- 21:03Speaker 4: people don't understand, and we may see things from two
- 21:09Speaker 4: different angles. I can understand what you're saying, the questions
- 21:15Speaker 4: can you understand what I'm saying? And a lot of
- 21:18Speaker 4: folks are hit out here don't want to understand. They
- 21:21Speaker 4: don't want to sit down and talk about it. Because
- 21:22Speaker 4: again I had uh had a conversation with somebody about
- 21:29Speaker 4: race relations, and within two minutes of the conversation, it says,
- 21:33Speaker 4: well what about your cargo? But with the violence, okay,
- 21:37Speaker 4: well what about it? You know, and they can't go
- 21:42Speaker 4: any further, they can't expound on that. And I posted
- 21:47Speaker 4: so I'm kind of bouncing back and forth, going around,
- 21:49Speaker 4: but you'll get what I'm saying. So I posted this
- 21:54Speaker 4: in light of the shooting in Minnesota and again my thoughts,
- 21:59Speaker 4: some prayers go out to the families in Minnesota. And
- 22:03Speaker 4: I said this, if there was a there was a
- 22:06Speaker 4: Hispanic or a Muslim that did the shooting, the media
- 22:14Speaker 4: will call it terrorism. So in light of the shooter,
- 22:19Speaker 4: why aren't we calling it terrorism now? So it is
- 22:25Speaker 4: again the wording makes it plays a big part in
- 22:30Speaker 4: what we think and how we think about the situation.
- 22:33Speaker 4: And that's that's the problem they've We don't want to
- 22:36Speaker 4: come and talk about it. We don't want to face
- 22:38Speaker 4: head on because again, if if we come to UH
- 22:43Speaker 4: a medium and and really sit down and talk about it,
- 22:47Speaker 4: I believe that this community we get so much better,
- 22:51Speaker 4: have a great, great understanding of what we go through
- 22:56Speaker 4: and how we get from point A to point B.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I've got a text here I'm gonna read because I
- 23:00Speaker 3: know that you're always ready to you get He and
- 23:03Speaker 3: I Ray and I were texting back for yesterday and
- 23:04Speaker 3: he said, I'll take phone calls, and I said, what people,
- 23:07Speaker 3: as much as I'd like people to call, the don't
- 23:08Speaker 3: call as much any more than more texture now. But
- 23:10Speaker 3: I'll read this text you. It says, Dave, contrary to
- 23:12Speaker 3: your guests, I don't think we've gone backwards at all.
- 23:15Speaker 3: A matter of fact, I think we've moved forward getting
- 23:17Speaker 3: rid of DEI. You would say to that, what.
- 23:21Speaker 4: To the person who texts that, tell me what their
- 23:26Speaker 4: definition of DEI is?
- 23:28Speaker 3: That's the problem, right, I think right there is because
- 23:31Speaker 3: everybody's definition of DEI is something is something different depending
- 23:36Speaker 3: on where you are in life. Most things, pardon to
- 23:40Speaker 3: pun are black and white. You know, I don't mean color,
- 23:42Speaker 3: but I mean your race. I mean just but it's
- 23:44Speaker 3: you know, there's not a lot of shades of gray.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Nobody can seem to define what DEI is on either. Well, no,
- 23:49Speaker 3: let me say this. The people that are saying we
- 23:52Speaker 3: got to get rid of DEI, if you get this
- 23:54Speaker 3: guy off the street and you ask him or you
- 23:56Speaker 3: asked this lady, you're gonna get two different answers, right
- 23:59Speaker 3: and and I And I think I think that's problematic
- 24:01Speaker 3: in itself. And I think you probably would agree with
- 24:03Speaker 3: that exactly.
- 24:04Speaker 4: And again, one thing about the I and affirmative action
- 24:09Speaker 4: goes it kind of plays in parallel with the I
- 24:13Speaker 4: when it comes to the workplace and things like jobs
- 24:19Speaker 4: and everything. We just want a fair shot and it's not.
- 24:24Speaker 4: And that's the thing. Maya Jackson, the former mayor of Atlanta,
- 24:29Speaker 4: them of years ago they were in the process of
- 24:33Speaker 4: rebuilding Atlanta, and his his thing was, I'm not going
- 24:38Speaker 4: to give out contracts unless you give these small black
- 24:46Speaker 4: companies a chance, like like a subcontract, give them a
- 24:51Speaker 4: chance diversity. And so again we I mean again, we
- 24:57Speaker 4: just want to level the plant field. We haven't gone uh,
- 25:00Speaker 4: we haven't gone forward. And keep in mind, Dave, black
- 25:05Speaker 4: folks make up three point six percent of population here.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Three point six So just listen, say three percent, so
- 25:12Speaker 4: out of one hundred people, three percent of one hundred
- 25:15Speaker 4: is but three So let's look at the hostate of
- 25:17Speaker 4: West Virginia. How much how much of a factor that
- 25:26Speaker 4: we are making in West Virginia? So why do away
- 25:31Speaker 4: with the EI? In my opinion? Now, if folks disagree,
- 25:35Speaker 4: that's their opinion. But the thing is, we just want
- 25:38Speaker 4: to be equal. Just treat us equal, give us a
- 25:41Speaker 4: fair chance. That's it. My greatest I'll say this the
- 25:46Speaker 4: greatest scene in cinema history. The Tuskegee Airmen Benjamin Davids said,
- 25:54Speaker 4: we are recognized when this suits them. All we ask
- 26:01Speaker 4: is a fair chance if we sitting down playing a
- 26:08Speaker 4: game of cards and I lose. If the deck is fixed,
- 26:12Speaker 4: how can I win?
- 26:15Speaker 6: Do you think that?
- 26:16Speaker 3: Do you think the deck is stacked against minorities in America?
- 26:20Speaker 6: Right?
- 26:20Speaker 4: I believe? So?
- 26:22Speaker 3: Oh how do we unstack the deck?
- 26:25Speaker 4: That's that's the sixty four dollars question? Date? Just I mean,
- 26:30Speaker 4: if we go to the boardrooms and talk to the
- 26:34Speaker 4: higher ups in these companies and get their opinion, you know,
- 26:42Speaker 4: tell I mean, I mean, I've seen cases where people
- 26:47Speaker 4: with degrees, African Americans with degrees apply for a job
- 26:54Speaker 4: in that field, and you have this person won't be
- 26:58Speaker 4: here who's white, who don't have a degree, but they
- 27:02Speaker 4: are related to say a president of the company, or
- 27:06Speaker 4: they're friends with them, and they get the job. You see.
- 27:12Speaker 3: But but ray is that is that? Is that racism?
- 27:14Speaker 3: Or is that nepotism? I mean, you know I have
- 27:18Speaker 3: applied as a white guy.
- 27:20Speaker 6: I'm white.
- 27:20Speaker 3: I don't know if you noticed that or not. No,
- 27:23Speaker 3: I had one point. I applied for a particular job,
- 27:27Speaker 3: not didn't radio in another field, and I didn't get it.
- 27:29Speaker 3: And the reason I didn't get it is because, as
- 27:31Speaker 3: you said, there was someone who knew someone when college
- 27:35Speaker 3: was someone fraternity brother whatever that got the job over me.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I was more qualified for the job, but I didn't
- 27:40Speaker 3: get it. But now you know, I mean, can't I
- 27:43Speaker 3: think what you described, I don't. I don't see that
- 27:45Speaker 3: as racism. I think I see that as there is
- 27:48Speaker 3: more nepotism than in that in that example that you gave.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Okay, but okay, here's the thing. There's nepotism. But what
- 27:57Speaker 4: if there's no relation. What if there's no they say, okay,
- 28:01Speaker 4: we're friends that that Now that's where it comes to
- 28:05Speaker 4: the play. But again, can't can we get past that
- 28:10Speaker 4: as a community? Can we get past that and come
- 28:14Speaker 4: together and say, okay, here's a fair shot. The deck
- 28:19Speaker 4: is not fixed, it's it's legit. Let's let's let's play
- 28:25Speaker 4: a good game. Just be fair about it.
- 28:27Speaker 3: Let me read another texture for it. So simply put,
- 28:30Speaker 3: de I means I have to hire you because of
- 28:32Speaker 3: your race instead of your qualifications.
- 28:37Speaker 4: Uh no, that does not mean. That does not mean that.
- 28:42Speaker 4: And again, you can have all the qualifications in the world.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Believe you have a bad interview. You know that that
- 28:48Speaker 4: could be a game changer right there. Again, but we
- 28:53Speaker 4: know that there there is some descripts there is some
- 29:04Speaker 4: picking and choosing in the boardroom and in the in
- 29:08Speaker 4: the interview process. It is. And that's all we're saying. Again,
- 29:13Speaker 4: if to that person who said that, what's the solution,
- 29:17Speaker 4: then to fix that's what's the solution. So let me
- 29:21Speaker 4: let me put the ball back in their quote. What's
- 29:22Speaker 4: the solution to fix that?
- 29:25Speaker 3: But you understand the perception though, of what that person
- 29:28Speaker 3: was saying, is that they see that as we talked
- 29:33Speaker 3: about the definition of THEI, they see that as I
- 29:36Speaker 3: have to hire a person of color, I have to
- 29:39Speaker 3: hire a woman, I have to hire somebody from the
- 29:41Speaker 3: l g B t Q community. That's how they see it.
- 29:45Speaker 3: But if you're part of that community, you don't necessarily
- 29:48Speaker 3: see it that one.
- 29:50Speaker 4: I look at it as this. If I'm an employer
- 29:54Speaker 4: and I'm trying to hire somebody, I'm trying to hire
- 29:57Speaker 4: somebody for this position. I'm going to look at the
- 30:00Speaker 4: best candidate for that position, no matter what color they are,
- 30:05Speaker 4: if they meet the criteria. Okay, first, first things first,
- 30:09Speaker 4: I'm going to invite them in for an interview and
- 30:12Speaker 4: we go from there with the black or white, and
- 30:15Speaker 4: again it doesn't matter. The higher process is different. Okay,
- 30:22Speaker 4: it is different, but it's not different. What I'm saying
- 30:26Speaker 4: is we have to again, what's wrong. We give a
- 30:30Speaker 4: black folks a fair shot first and foremost. That's it
- 30:33Speaker 4: now as far as you have to hire, because again,
- 30:37Speaker 4: now you want to talk about a friend reaction. Now
- 30:40Speaker 4: to the Texter who said that, who benefit from a
- 30:43Speaker 4: firm reaction the most white women because if you read
- 30:49Speaker 4: the letter of the law, white women are considered a
- 30:52Speaker 4: minority too.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right, You're right. Tex says, a fair chance
- 30:57Speaker 3: is equality. Now the big thing is equity. There's a different.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Equality is exactly what you just said, an equal chance
- 31:03Speaker 3: or opportunity. Equity is equal outcome. DEI used to be
- 31:06Speaker 3: called tokenism and was highly condemned.
- 31:12Speaker 4: They if you come up with a set of rules. Okay,
- 31:19Speaker 4: if you come up with set of rules, we can
- 31:21Speaker 4: play about the rules. Okay, so we can run a
- 31:24Speaker 4: race of one hundred yards, but don't say, after I
- 31:29Speaker 4: run the race of the one hundred yards, don't say, oh,
- 31:32Speaker 4: you gotta do this, but you gotta run an extra
- 31:34Speaker 4: ten yards, because that's the gray area right there that
- 31:42Speaker 4: we face in this society. And again, a lot of
- 31:46Speaker 4: white people don't understand what we go through. But if
- 31:49Speaker 4: you talk about it, and again, if we have a discussion,
- 31:51Speaker 4: they're fine. I can explain to you. I can break
- 31:55Speaker 4: it down for you, or, in the words of Denzel
- 31:57Speaker 4: Washington in the movie of Philadelphia, explain to you like
- 32:00Speaker 4: a four year old not to not to assault somebody's intelligence.
- 32:05Speaker 4: But that's the thing. People don't know.
- 32:09Speaker 3: They don't know, Dave, you don't know what you don't know.
- 32:12Speaker 3: The Boss used to say that Texas minorities having the
- 32:15Speaker 3: deck stacked against them. It's not like there's a history
- 32:17Speaker 3: of redlining of banks not giving loa to minorities. Says
- 32:21Speaker 3: a text. I think there's a little sarcasm there saying yeah,
- 32:24Speaker 3: that's I mean, I think I think they're on. What
- 32:26Speaker 3: I gather from the SEXTU is that they agree with you.
- 32:29Speaker 3: That's that's what we're saying. All right. So you got
- 32:32Speaker 3: these activities going on in West Virginia day, are you
- 32:35Speaker 3: a little upset with the governor that he did not
- 32:37Speaker 3: because you know, now Senator Jim Justice made Juneteenth a holiday.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Governor came out on Thursday or Friday and said, because
- 32:45Speaker 3: of where it falls on the cavndar in West Virginia
- 32:48Speaker 3: Day would be that's in code that that's a state holiday.
- 32:51Speaker 3: June teenth has a federal holiday. Many offices are closed,
- 32:55Speaker 3: insurance places are closed, some of them are. Anyway, are
- 32:59Speaker 3: you what U with with Governor Morrisey his decision.
- 33:02Speaker 4: I'm disappointed in his decision. Yes, I'm disappointed. Great, I
- 33:08Speaker 4: mean again, I just I wish he changed his mind.
- 33:13Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Well let's see, Hey, Ray, we got to leave it here.
- 33:20Speaker 3: I appreciate you stopping by, give us, give us the
- 33:22Speaker 3: rundown again of all that, because he got all kinds
- 33:24Speaker 3: of stuff going on to city, such a slack Plaza,
- 33:26Speaker 3: and I actually have a graphic posted about it on
- 33:28Speaker 3: my social media if you want to check it out,
- 33:29Speaker 3: but go ahead.
- 33:30Speaker 4: So on Thursday evening, we have a journalist come in,
- 33:33Speaker 4: Roland Martin, who was well known throughout the country.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Yeah, that's he's a heavy hitterer, he really is.
- 33:38Speaker 4: He's coming to Charleston. Uh, there would be a fire
- 33:41Speaker 4: sight check between he and I. It's on Thursday, and
- 33:44Speaker 4: then on Friday again, we have a bunch of events
- 33:47Speaker 4: going on at Slack Plaza from noon to four. Uh,
- 33:51Speaker 4: there would be a parade starting at the King Center
- 33:55Speaker 4: starting eleven thirty and again leading up to slack Plaza,
- 33:58Speaker 4: and then again from noon to four will be a
- 34:00Speaker 4: bunch of events going on local acts, poetry, acting and
- 34:08Speaker 4: so again, music and so a lot of a lot
- 34:12Speaker 4: of groups have participated, so there will be some booths,
- 34:16Speaker 4: information and everything. So again a lot of groups will
- 34:18Speaker 4: be there in attendance to educate, to inform people about
- 34:24Speaker 4: June tenth and again the things we can do to
- 34:27Speaker 4: be better as a society.
- 34:30Speaker 3: All right, sounds good?
- 34:31Speaker 4: Can say one thing, yes, okay, I want to give
- 34:33Speaker 4: a shout out to the team who have made this possible.
- 34:37Speaker 4: Miss Jenny claytor Woodson, Karen Williams, Shaniko Smith, Tanya Clark,
- 34:43Speaker 4: Toby Terrell, Dax Miller, Trenton, Samuel, Rita Jones, tell your heart,
- 34:51Speaker 4: Sonya Armstrong, and there's a few others. I forgot the name,
- 34:55Speaker 4: so please forgive me charge you on my head now
- 34:57Speaker 4: my heart. I apologize to the team who made it possible. Again,
- 35:01Speaker 4: Please profs to them, give them love, give them flowers.
- 35:05Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 35:06Speaker 3: All right, before I let you go, the most important
- 35:07Speaker 3: question of all thirty seconds on this how you feeling
- 35:10Speaker 3: about Aaron Rodgers being in.
- 35:11Speaker 4: I love it.
- 35:12Speaker 3: I love it as big a Cowboys fan as I am.

- 46:49Speaker 3: I know that's his cross to bear. Actually, as a
- 46:53Speaker 3: cowboy fan, believe or not, I don't totally hate the
- 46:55Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Steelers. I know that most cowboy fans of the
- 46:58Speaker 3: nineteen seventies like I am, don't like I actually have
- 47:01Speaker 3: a problem anybody but Washington, Philadelphia. The giants are fine
- 47:04Speaker 3: with me, including the Steelers. Dexa's Dave Donald Young. Trump

- 47:12Speaker 3: I thought it was Kim Jung stepping out of the crowd,
- 47:15Speaker 3: dissolute Trump like Trump did him. Now to the flooding
- 47:19Speaker 3: in Ohio and Marin Counties, and of course the talk
- 47:21Speaker 3: line boys are going to have more on that, as
- 47:23Speaker 3: well as Amanda and myself on Metro News at midday,
- 47:25Speaker 3: just utterly devastating. We have a gallery of photos posted
- 47:29Speaker 3: to wv metro news dot com. I mean, it's estimated
- 47:33Speaker 3: that some parts of the Wheeling area got up to
- 47:35Speaker 3: four inches of rain in thirty minutes. Think about that
- 47:38Speaker 3: for a moment. Four inches of rain in thirty minutes,
- 47:42Speaker 3: and certainly our thoughts and prayers go out to those folks.
- 47:44Speaker 3: And I have to give credit where credit is due
- 47:47Speaker 3: to my counterpart on the radio and Wheeland, Howard Monroe,
- 47:52Speaker 3: and you know, Howard's absolutely right. It doesn't take much
- 47:54Speaker 3: in this divided nation of ours for people to take
- 47:56Speaker 3: any opportunity, tragedy or whatever to dig their heels in
- 48:00Speaker 3: and take political shots, which is already happening. I saw
- 48:05Speaker 3: some posts on some of the flooding, on some of
- 48:08Speaker 3: the national news sites that said one particular said, well,
- 48:11Speaker 3: that's what the state gets for supporting Donald Trump. Zero sympathy.
- 48:16Speaker 3: That was on ABC News. So that's where we are now.
- 48:19Speaker 3: But back to Howard for a moment. I love what
- 48:21Speaker 3: he put on social media. This was his quote, Awe,
- 48:23Speaker 3: for pity's sake, we are less than twenty four hours
- 48:26Speaker 3: away from a generational devastation in Ohio County. Can we
- 48:30Speaker 3: please give the political finger pointing and criticism or rest
- 48:34Speaker 3: for a couple of days. Five or dead. That was
- 48:36Speaker 3: what it was at the time. Now it's up to six.
- 48:38Speaker 3: Others are missing, towns are destroyed. Let's deal with what's
- 48:41Speaker 3: in front of us and get back to beating our
- 48:43Speaker 3: political drums another day. Let's pray for those affected, raise
- 48:48Speaker 3: up the heroic work of our first responders and command
- 48:50Speaker 3: Governor Patrick Morrissey for his quick response to our needs.
- 48:54Speaker 3: There's time enough for debate after the recovery and grieving. Well,
- 48:57Speaker 3: said Howard Monroe. I mean, what exactly is wrong with
- 49:04Speaker 3: people today? It's like this is a morbid thought. Every
- 49:09Speaker 3: day I wake up with a thought that I'm glad
- 49:11Speaker 3: I'm going to be dead in twenty years because I
- 49:13Speaker 3: cannot imagine what this world is going to look like
- 49:16Speaker 3: another twenty years. Side programming note here someone texted asking
- 49:21Speaker 3: where Danny was today. Danny Jones sort to become a

- 49:29Speaker 3: Older adults should protect themselves against severe respiratory disease. Talk
- 49:32Speaker 3: to your doctor about flu, COVID nineteen and RSV vaccines,
- 49:35Speaker 3: risk less do more. It started at vaccines dot govp
- 49:38Speaker 3: for about the US Department of Health and Human Services.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Vance Bolter, the fifty seven year old guy suspected in
- 49:43Speaker 3: the lawmaker shootings in Minnesota, has been captured. He was
- 49:46Speaker 3: picked up around one this morning near his farm, green Isle, Minnesota.
- 49:50Speaker 3: He's doing court at one point thirty this afternoon. He's
- 49:52Speaker 3: charged with two counts of murder and two counts of
- 49:54Speaker 3: attempted murder. He is accused in the fatal shootings of
- 49:57Speaker 3: Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hartman and her and the separate
- 50:01Speaker 3: attack on Senator John Hoffan and his wife. Again to
- 50:06Speaker 3: be pessimistic, but people are crazy. This is where we
- 50:09Speaker 3: are now. We justify the killing of a healthcare executive,
- 50:13Speaker 3: and I'm sure some are going to justify this situation
- 50:15Speaker 3: as well. I could be like everyone else saying we
- 50:21Speaker 3: have to do better, but folks, we aren't getting any better.
- 50:24Speaker 3: We are getting worse, sadly, and there's no reason for
- 50:28Speaker 3: me to believe it's it's going to get better. I mean,
- 50:31Speaker 3: we immerse ourselves completely in politics and wild conspiracy theories
- 50:37Speaker 3: fueled by the Internet and social media and certain other
- 50:40Speaker 3: media outlets, and it simply makes it easier for us
- 50:43Speaker 3: to find other crazy people. Wish I had better news
- 50:46Speaker 3: for you on this Monday, but sadly I don't. Hey,
- 50:51Speaker 3: look who's here. It's TJ. Meadows. How theyre going? Man?
- 50:54Speaker 3: Not bad in yourself? Oh?
- 50:55Speaker 6: You pretty good? Pretty good? Man?
- 50:57Speaker 3: Is that a little too extreme on my part?
- 50:59Speaker 2: No?
- 51:00Speaker 3: I mean to say, this is kind of where we
- 51:01Speaker 3: are right now.
- 51:03Speaker 16: I often wonder if we've always been here and the
- 51:08Speaker 16: tools we have today, like social media and others shine
- 51:11Speaker 16: a light on it so we see it more. I
- 51:14Speaker 16: don't know if that's the case or not, but yeah,
- 51:16Speaker 16: we're definitely not our best selves. I think it's it's
- 51:19Speaker 16: a totally fair criticism, and I mean on.
- 51:21Speaker 3: Both, on both. I mean, when I got text of
- 51:25Speaker 3: the show justifying the killing of the United Healthcare executive, geez,
- 51:31Speaker 3: I mean, but but look at all of the lives
- 51:33Speaker 3: he called Are you serious? Are you freaking serious right now?
- 51:36Speaker 3: You cann tell that to his wife and kids, you know,
- 51:38Speaker 3: And and with this situation too, I.
- 51:41Speaker 16: Mean, it's just I mean, that's a warped sense of morality.
- 51:45Speaker 16: I think is a generous way of putting it. I
- 51:47Speaker 16: was posting pictures last night of a substation that got
- 51:51Speaker 16: washed away in the Greater Wheeling area. Someone in the
- 51:54Speaker 16: comments shot at me, which is fine. Are you gonna
- 51:57Speaker 16: blame that on protesters too? You know that's where we
- 52:01Speaker 16: are though.
- 52:02Speaker 3: Let me ask you real quick about the protesters the
- 52:05Speaker 3: No King's rally. I thought it was a little much
- 52:08Speaker 3: on behalf of the governor to put the guard on standby, because,
- 52:10Speaker 3: I mean, again, what happens in certain areas ain't gonna
- 52:13Speaker 3: happen in West Virginia. Promise it, Guarantee it. It's not
