Transcript
- 0:18Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:21Monday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network,
- 0:23Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours to talk
- 0:27sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:28afternoon with us wherever you are listening.
- 0:30We are certainly grateful that you are.
- 0:33Here's what's coming up on our program at the bottom of the
- 0:36hour. We'll catch up with Scott
- 0:37Dockerman from the Athletic. He was at Carver yesterday.
- 0:40We will pick his brain on what he saw.
- 0:42Obviously a college, a lot of college football conversation to
- 0:45get to with Doc and we'll do so at 12:30, at 1:00 or just after
- 0:501:00. And when we resume with our
- 0:52number two Bill Seals on the Iowa State men remain
- 0:56undefeated. Tough one for the ladies over
- 0:59the weekend and the portal Jimmy Rogers continues to do work as
- 1:03they rebuild that roster. So Bill seals a lot of ground to
- 1:06cover Iowa State related. We will do so at 1:00 Bama Bob
- 1:10at about 1:25. We'll recap the weekend as we
- 1:13are down to one game left in college football and Mr. Monday
- 1:17night with his pick on the final of NFL game.
- 1:21But I guess we he's we're off next Monday.
- 1:24This is it. All of us are off for MLK day
- 1:27next week. So Mr. Monday night I I think it
- 1:30all comes down to this season hinges on tonight's pick.
- 1:36It's a 20 star play to try to get back to about 500.
- 1:39Absolutely. So that's I should go through
- 1:41and see what my Monday night record is probably not very
- 1:43good. Anyways, you'll we'll get his
- 1:46pick good or not coming up here. Do with it what you will as you
- 1:50do at coming up here. About 10 minutes before 2O
- 1:52clock. So much ground to cover.
- 1:53Wild card weekend was unbelievable.
- 1:56College hoops was kind of hit and miss depending on what team
- 2:00you root for. But the weekend of NFL was
- 2:02fascinating and we got to start in Chicago.
- 2:05I saw you started the week with this tune from Chicago wearing
- 2:08your Bears hat and your Bears sweatshirt.
- 2:11Pretty good to be a Bears fan today.
- 2:12And what a football game it was, as the Bears do what they've
- 2:14done all season long and that's find a way to win a football
- 2:16game. I don't know where awful,
- 2:19absolutely brutal. So I want to tell you, I've told
- 2:22you before, I don't drink at home very often, certainly
- 2:25unless we have people over, you know, things like that.
- 2:27Just that's something that I do very often.
- 2:30But at halftime, Ella was at a sleepover, so she was out of the
- 2:33house. And Tara takes Jack up because
- 2:35he had a wrestling tournament yesterday, Sunday.
- 2:37So halftime she goes up like, you know what, I'm going to
- 2:40crack one because this is awful. And maybe at least a little bit,
- 2:43of course, is going to soothe my pain a little bit here as we
- 2:46watch this dreadful second-half in front of us.
- 2:49Maybe that was the turn around. Well, I'm going to credit you
- 2:51because whatever it was, 25 to 6, the throw will live forever.
- 2:56The 4th and 8th and the fact that somebody had the
- 2:59wherewithal, the fortitude to what do you call it, transpose.
- 3:03Michael Jordan's jumping under Caleb Williams as it's been on
- 3:07all over Twitter. I mean, it's fascinating how he
- 3:09made that throw moving to his left in a narrow window over a
- 3:13linebacker or say whatever it was, squeezed it in between
- 3:16there to a doomsday. It's not like it was in the
- 3:19final minute of the game. There was 5 minutes left, but it
- 3:21was a huge point in the game. What a football game.
- 3:25I have no problem with the handshake after the OR lack of
- 3:29because it's not the first time those two apparently don't like
- 3:31each other. No, absolutely.
- 3:32And that's OK. When Ben Johnson got the job in
- 3:35his opening press conference, he said he likes being beating Matt
- 3:37Lafleur twice a year. You know, that's one of the
- 3:39reasons he wanted to take the bet and out.
- 3:41Lafleur played it the other way. I really don't.
- 3:43We don't have a relationship, but I don't know really who he
- 3:45is. But we don't know each other.
- 3:47It's kind of gone that direction but the first game it was a blow
- 3:50by yeah second game it was Lafleur blowing by yes
- 3:53absolutely. And so that's what it is did you
- 3:56see the security guard that was on the right shoulder did yes of
- 4:00Lafleur. So was that in anticipation of
- 4:02maybe something, I think it was the lady.
- 4:04No, I think it was in anticipation of we're not going
- 4:06to get a let him get that blow by and and get him kind of maybe
- 4:10give him a little shoulder drop block.
- 4:11Yeah, yeah, a little block there had an extra defender with him,
- 4:14Lee Blocker that was going out there on his left side.
- 4:17But. And after and the locker room
- 4:19speech and everything that goes along with it.
- 4:21But this is this Bears team. And I've told you so many times
- 4:25throughout the course of this year, really after the first
- 4:26month, I just love watching this team.
- 4:29I mean, as a fan, I have had never had as much fun since I
- 4:32was in kindergarten watching A-Team because I, I know it's 40
- 4:36years ago. But afterwards there was a lot
- 4:39of disappointment with that Bears team not being able to get
- 4:41back over the hump again. San Francisco is re emerging,
- 4:44obviously what they turned into in the late 80s.
- 4:46Yet the Redskins teams that were tremendous at all was about to
- 4:49make a trade and change the fortunes of their franchise.
- 4:51And that was even a little bit later on than that.
- 4:53But that completely changed what you thought after the Super
- 4:57Bowl, Super Bowl 20. Well, they're going to have 3-4
- 4:59movies and, oh, they didn't give Walter Payton A touchdown and
- 5:02they came, but that's fine because they're going to be
- 5:04back. And they weren't.
- 5:06They weren't back. And year after year, yeah, you
- 5:09won the old NFC Central, but that was about it.
- 5:12And now to have this and just to do it in that fashion and to
- 5:15have a quarterback that the Bears have never had before,
- 5:18watched a lot of football. I've never had a quarterback
- 5:21even close to this guy in terms of talent.
- 5:24There's nobody and if you bring up Jay Cutler but bring up his
- 5:27arm, I'll bring up his arm, but that's it.
- 5:29He was he was a terrible, he was not a good quarterback.
- 5:32There's more than just having a good arm.
- 5:33I'm just saying he had a great arm, but that's about it is what
- 5:36he said. Jay Cutler is not even in the
- 5:37same stratosphere, you know, as Caleb Williams and you mentioned
- 5:41that throw. How many guys in the NFL can
- 5:42make that throw? Well, I mean couple of them, but
- 5:45that was at the timing wise. It was, it was, it was.
- 5:48Are you sure there is even a couple of them moving to your
- 5:50last about 32 NFL quarters? Yes, I'm guessing there'll be
- 5:53some of them. They can.
- 5:54But that was a remarkable throw. It was remarkable at the timing.
- 5:58It looked as though they were cooked.
- 5:59And how big would it have been if it was incomplete?
- 6:02It was over. It probably was game over.
- 6:04And he made the comeback and do it the way they did it.
- 6:07And I don't know what Jordan Love was doing his final pass to
- 6:10the game. I mean, that wasn't even close.
- 6:12Like he gave up, but here you take away, you've got no shot.
- 6:16The play before it was there. He.
- 6:18Just missed Golden. He just he did just missed
- 6:21Golden. There were six guys around him,
- 6:22but he threaded the needle on that one and just missed on that
- 6:24one. And the only spot that he could
- 6:26get it away from the Bears for a moment to the Packers side.
- 6:31Now they get in again. Third consecutive year, though
- 6:33was a seven seed. You look at some of the playoff
- 6:36losses that they've had. I mean, go all the way back from
- 6:40the Super Bowl and they had Aaron Rodgers, but the Brad
- 6:42Farve Super Bowl. And you go through and you look
- 6:43at the list of losses that they've had in the playoffs.
- 6:46Helicopter, John Elway TO in the playoffs with two guys
- 6:51sandwiched in in between them and making that play and just on
- 6:54and on and on. The number of times that this
- 6:56Packers team, at times it's felt like the best team, certainly a
- 7:00better team on the field in those individual games and have
- 7:03not been able to get it done. Now, because you have a couple
- 7:05of Super Bowls, that changes things, Obviously.
- 7:08However, they got a lot of playoff strife that has gone
- 7:12against them and the floor is coming back apparently.
- 7:15OK, Yeah. As a Bears fan, you've got to be
- 7:17right. Yeah, as a Bears fan, you've got
- 7:19to be rather see him than John Harbaugh on the other side, have
- 7:22seen him than a lot of guys. So what was the adjustment at
- 7:25halftime because how many 3 and outs were there to begin this?
- 7:27Was there 3 or 4 consecutive 3 and outs to start the
- 7:31second-half? There was a bunch of them, yes.
- 7:33And this team looked like in the first, in the 1st 30 minutes,
- 7:37Chicago was totally lost. Green Bay had all the momentum
- 7:40going into the locker room and it the script just completely
- 7:44flipped. And on to the fourth quarter we
- 7:46went and out scored them 25 to 6.
- 7:49It's just, it was a remarkable comeback, remarkable turn around
- 7:53by a team that's essentially done this all year long.
- 7:57And and they did it again. Now here come the Rams.
- 8:00But it's another home game for Chicago, for the Chicago folks
- 8:03that sold your field. Can't wait for it.
- 8:05Obviously, we'll get and certainly going to have some fun
- 8:07leading up to it and talking about it.
- 8:09But hats off to Caleb Williams. Hats off to the receiving corps.
- 8:13I'll tell you who deserves maybe the biggest hands off.
- 8:15Maybe not the biggest hands off because that should be reserved
- 8:18for for Caleb Williams. But Colston loved what a game,
- 8:21what a game. And for all of us, and I say us
- 8:23because there's a lot of us, both of us, both of us and every
- 8:26a lot of us in the listening audience that thought, what are
- 8:28they doing? Tyler Warren is still on the
- 8:30board. What a mistake this was.
- 8:32Well, Warren's a nice player, but love them.
- 8:35Great fit and a nice player at the same time.
- 8:37So they absolutely got that one right.
- 8:41Three out of four drives went three and out.
- 8:42They had one first down. Was that what it was?
- 8:44It was unbelief in the second-half to start the
- 8:47second-half. And what the Bears did and
- 8:48Dennis Allen did and they got the ball first, right?
- 8:50Green Bay, they did, yeah, 3 and up right away was they applied
- 8:55more pressure, a lot more blitzing than what happened
- 8:57there. And well, if you're going to sit
- 8:59back and just let him pick you apart and it doesn't matter if
- 9:00you're dropping 6-7 or eight, but yeah, apply a little bit
- 9:03more pressure there. I thought Montez Sweat was good.
- 9:06He was. I agree.
- 9:07It hasn't been consistent, no, But when it's there definitely
- 9:10changes the complexion, you know, And another thing, Edwards
- 9:13going out. Edwards is good linebacker.
- 9:16Yeah. However, yeah, get a little more
- 9:18speed out there, a little more ankle or foot.
- 9:20Do they? I mean, it's over.
- 9:21Yeah. It's yeah, it's season ending.
- 9:24Johnson mentioned that in the post game press conference that
- 9:26it's over for him. Same thing for the offensive
- 9:28lineman. Speaking of big plays, Trapillo.
- 9:30Trapillo, how do I say his name? Yeah, Yeah, him just getting to
- 9:34the sideline and not not wasting a time out.
- 9:36Great point on that one. Great point that that one time
- 9:40out was incredibly important. Excellent point.
- 9:43And how many guys actually do that or have the wherewithal to
- 9:45know that this is a pretty significant injury?
- 9:47Was he being coached or was he on his own?
- 9:49I mean, I don't know. They just cut to him as he's
- 9:51kind of hopping over the sideline and being able to go
- 9:54there. But that was absolutely
- 9:55monstrous in a game where you kind of needed breaks, you
- 10:00needed a couple of goofy things, and he needed small things like
- 10:03that too. All of them stack up.
- 10:05You come back and get the victory.
- 10:06Dennis Allen, lot of credit, He deserves it.
- 10:09Ben Johnson, absolutely. And Caleb once again, fine.
- 10:12And the confidence and seeing him in the first half, See that
- 10:15team at the end of the second quarter, they just looked dead.
- 10:17Well, R Johnson going for it on 4th down like he was.
- 10:20I thought he was panicking. Well, yes.
- 10:22Yeah. What?
- 10:23On the 30? Was it 3030 something?
- 10:26What are you doing? I agree.
- 10:27You're giving him three points. You don't want to punt.
- 10:30Tori Taylor, by the way, didn't punt in the game something.
- 10:33Let's get Mitch in here, then we'll get back to the game.
- 10:35But don't keep him on hold. Mitch for Thanks for being
- 10:37patient. How are you?
- 10:38I'm good guys. How are you?
- 10:39Fine, Trat. First of all, congratulations,
- 10:43as much as that pains me to say. Thank you.
- 10:44Thank you. You've had a lot of
- 10:45congratulations throughout the year, so.
- 10:47Thank you. Yeah, yeah, I know you guys
- 10:49brought up all the playoff disasters and just add, add this
- 10:52one to the list, man. Hopefully they made those.
- 10:56Hopefully they made Rick's Versace, Brandon McManus,
- 10:59Carrington Valentine and Keyshawn Nixon.
- 11:01I'll walk back to Green Bay. Especially McManus.
- 11:05That was brutal. They kept they kept the wrong
- 11:08kicker and. Cost them how?
- 11:09Many games this year. So I mean, like you guys talked
- 11:14about Caleb Caleb Williams made a heck of a play on that fourth
- 11:17down to essentially save the game for the bears, but love
- 11:21almost made just as great a throw hitting Watson to win the
- 11:25game. So I mean, it sucks.
- 11:30I I'm I'm in pain. Yeah, Mitch, thanks for the
- 11:33call, brother. Appreciate it.
- 11:34And yeah, yeah, I understand it. I understand.
- 11:38I love the rivalry. It's phenomenal for the NFL.
- 11:41It's so great that it played out on on Amazon.
- 11:44Not great, that part, but there was on Saturday night.
- 11:47I wonder what the number would have been, you know, if Fox had
- 11:49the game or if CBS had the game or anybody had the game, I got
- 11:53to believe that it would just be a massive, massive number.
- 11:56Do we do? Does everybody have Amazon now?
- 11:58Did we do well? Was it Amazon was Prime, right?
- 12:00Yeah, I mean, not everybody, but the numbers are significant.
- 12:05Are they continuing? I I would think that this,
- 12:09that's a question. More people certainly have Prime
- 12:12than DIRECTV. More people have Prime than
- 12:15cable. I would anticipate.
- 12:17Yeah. I don't know.
- 12:17Now, if you put all the systems across, let's see what the
- 12:20Google machine has to say. How many people do you think in
- 12:22America have Amazon Prime? You're asking me.
- 12:25Yeah, I have the wrong guy to ask.
- 12:26I have no idea. Let's see.
- 12:29Let's see how many Americans have Amazon Prime?
- 12:32Early estimates in 2025, almost 200 million Americans.
- 12:38You're kidding. Have a Amazon Prime membership.
- 12:42See why they And that means you can get TV on the Amazon Prime
- 12:45membership. If you do, you automatically get
- 12:46it. 200 million is 72 to 75% of the adult population.
- 12:52Wild. Yeah.
- 12:54Think things are changing? Yeah.
- 12:55No kidding. There is another example for
- 12:58you. How about that?
- 12:59Well, fascinating football game. All right, let's leave that one.
- 13:02What was the second best game of the weekend, which moved your
- 13:04needle more than any of the others?
- 13:06Was it Josh Allen doing with Josh?
- 13:08I mean, that that push. Push for 10 yards?
- 13:11Come on, get rid of it, right, idiot, get rid of it.
- 13:15But just I mean, nobody gets 10 yards on a tush push other than
- 13:18Josh Allen. This team has so many injuries,
- 13:21but he's so much fun to watch. I find myself rooting for him
- 13:25just because of the way that it ended the ball tip.
- 13:30I have Riams Carolina, I guess in front of that by a tick.
- 13:32But two the Bills Jaguars game Jacksonville.
- 13:37That team's good enough to make a run.
- 13:39They were Buffalo goes in there. I just Lee and Cohen who I like
- 13:43and I think good solid coach. Apparently there's a reporter in
- 13:46the press conference after the game that likes them too.
- 13:48Did you hear that? Come on that was I I got Jaguars
- 13:54fanatic.com. Is that who?
- 13:56No, it wasn't. It was somebody from like it was
- 13:58like AI think a Jacksonville public something about right
- 14:04with Jacksonville. Why aren't they just running the
- 14:07ball? They could get when they went
- 14:09outside zone, they're getting 8 yards of pop and they went away
- 14:13from it. And they talk about second
- 14:15guessing. I mean, that's first guessing
- 14:16there. Run the ball.
- 14:19The Buffalo Bills could do nothing defensively to slow them
- 14:22down. And when we get to next week's,
- 14:24and that's their weakness. Buffalo cannot stop the run, run
- 14:28the ball. But Denver has no running backs.
- 14:30Yeah, they got RJ Harvey, good pass catcher, bad, bad, bad.
- 14:34Carrying the football that that's an edge.
- 14:36That's a huge edge. You can run the ball on the
- 14:38Bills. We shall see.
- 14:41Rams, Carolina to get. It's fascinating.
- 14:43It really was a good game. I found myself at the end, even
- 14:46though I'm heavily invested in the Rams and have North
- 14:48Carolina, I kind of want Carolina to win.
- 14:49Oh, absolutely. You know, what a great story how
- 14:52that this team is, is doing what they're doing.
- 14:54And I was kind of disappointed Carolina didn't win the football
- 14:58game, to be honest. How the Eagles lose.
- 15:00Well, it's what we've seen all season, offense.
- 15:03I go back to that first game of the year.
- 15:05Something was off. Then something's off in January.
- 15:07It's the same thing that we had. Brown has to be done in Philly.
- 15:10Oh, absolutely, yeah, has to be done.
- 15:12I mean, you saw Siriani get into it on the sidelines with him.
- 15:16And no sooner had who did the game, Burkhart.
- 15:18Burkhart just said something about hadn't hadn't caught a
- 15:20pass since the first half right in his hands in a huge spot in
- 15:24the football game goes right through them and onto the turf
- 15:27and and Brock Purdy unbelievable.
- 15:30George Kittle. Sadly, you could just see that
- 15:33that Achilles rolling up the back of his calf and Oh my God,
- 15:36those injuries, those injuries you got about how about killer.
- 15:39I was about to say that How about Kittle This one will go
- 15:42down in George Kittle or George Kittle or and 49ers lore.
- 15:49The time that one of their best players got hurt and had the
- 15:53somebody bring down a bottle of tequila, it wasn't just that it
- 15:57was York, the owner, the owner and said is there anything,
- 16:01anything that I could do? And normally you hear that if
- 16:04you've had anything in your life and you.
- 16:05No, I'm fine. Yeah.
- 16:07Bring me a bottle of tequila. And they did.
- 16:09And not just anybody. Yeah.
- 16:10This was not Jose Cuervo. No, it was Patron, right.
- 16:13I think it was Patron. It was like a special label.
- 16:15Was it really. Is that 40 bucks that you get a
- 16:17high V liquor? No.
- 16:19Hey, by the way, I know this guy takes a lot of Flack and.
- 16:22And you certainly shoveled your did you see Mccaskey when one of
- 16:28the bears, who was it that got injured running down the tunnel
- 16:32to catch up with him? Oh, no, I yes.
- 16:35And they and they broadcast actually pointed him up.
- 16:37There goes George Mccaskey running who wasn't the God, it
- 16:40was Edwards. Oh, OK, Actually follow him
- 16:43underneath the bowels, the Soldier Field to get in there
- 16:46and talk to him. That's pretty cool.
- 16:48I mean, that's that's a little class.
- 16:49Be a better owner. But yeah, well, OK.
- 16:51But but still, he got that one right.
- 16:54And you, you know, you got to give a little credit for that
- 16:56one, right? A couple of minutes on college
- 16:58hoops. Iowa State did what Iowa State
- 17:01does. They start slow.
- 17:02Yeah. But then you know what, by the
- 17:03time that you hit the the second immediate time out, they've got
- 17:07things figured out. And the way they go and the way
- 17:09they went again, as we kind of talked about that Oklahoma State
- 17:11team a lot better. Yes, they are.
- 17:13They've they've they've improved their Medal of the Pack Big 12
- 17:16kids. I want to see them in the
- 17:17tournament. Yeah, I want to see that team.
- 17:19And then maybe it's Dayton, but I want to see him there.
- 17:21Yeah. I think that's a good spot for
- 17:22them getting back to the tournament.
- 17:24A proud program team that I mean, historically saw so many
- 17:28great games. It's sad, but unfortunately
- 17:30that's turned into with basketball and undertaking a lot
- 17:32of the basketball fans certainly away from Oklahoma State.
- 17:35But yeah, that was a good team. And I was I walked away
- 17:38impressed by them, but did too, as always, walk away more
- 17:40impressed by Iowa State as we do every single time because they
- 17:44just find it's not like they could pull away from this
- 17:46outfit, you know what I mean? It was it was kind of nip and
- 17:48tuck. They won by double digits.
- 17:50I think the number was what, 18? They get.
- 17:51They won by a dozen, but the end of the day, they're 16 and O in
- 17:55Michigan going down. Yes, how about that?
- 17:58I thought this team had a chance to get through it unscathed, but
- 18:01no, that wasn't the case. All starters for Iowa State and
- 18:03double figures that was. That was one of my takeaways
- 18:08from the game on. Tilovich making shot after shot,
- 18:10Lipsy doing what he does and, and well done.
- 18:14And, and you know what Plead is really every time I watch him
- 18:16play, he takes another step seemingly forward, right?
- 18:19All right, let's get to, let's get to Iowa.
- 18:22And how many, how big concern is there with Bennett Sturtz right
- 18:26now? What he's going through,
- 18:27obviously he's going to have the target, right?
- 18:29When you scout to stop Iowa, you find, you find Sturtz first and
- 18:32foremost. OK, let's stop #14 And as we
- 18:35talked about leading into the game, Boswell's a tremendous
- 18:37defender. You saw that.
- 18:39And when they played great defenses, Bennett Sturtz has
- 18:41been terrible. He was awful.
- 18:44Nothing short of awful. You got to lay up to make it a 2
- 18:46point game. You miss it, you're Hocking up
- 18:48threes that are awful. In fact, they played their best
- 18:50basketball. He was on the bench, he was
- 18:52sitting on that bench. That's when I will play.
- 18:54By far their best stretch of basketball.
- 18:57When he wasn't out there, you couple that with on the
- 18:59defensive end, he's lost. He's absolutely brutal on that
- 19:03end of the floor. You talk about a guy that was
- 19:05heightened preseason, All American.
- 19:07This guy's going to be better, better than Braden Smith.
- 19:09No, not even close. This has been, he's still in the
- 19:12teens in next year's NBA draft. I wonder where this thing's all
- 19:15said and done where he'll be. Not a team that I wanted to see
- 19:18draft because that guy, the guy that we've seen in big moments
- 19:21this year, he has not been that guy.
- 19:23So let me ask you about Tate Sage.
- 19:24I know he came off the bench because he had an illness and
- 19:28apparently he was working his way through the locker room.
- 19:30Is that something, do you think that McCullum, will it mean does
- 19:33he come off the bench going forward?
- 19:35Does he get us started 'cause I thought he was really good.
- 19:38I thought he was really good. I thought Banks was Banks.
- 19:40Banks came off the bench. Both of both of them did.
- 19:42Who was sick? Banks was sick.
- 19:43Banks was sick. Banks was sick.
- 19:45I wonder if if if that if that's going to be status quo going
- 19:49forward or does he go back into the starting lineup?
- 19:52I've told you before. I mean they don't stay in the
- 19:53game against Minnesota without Kale Combs.
- 19:55I'm just not a huge Combs guy. I would be at the point where
- 19:59I'm ready Combs out. Yeah and Seymour Tate Sage in
- 20:01there him start at the two guard and go that direction and see if
- 20:04I think Underwood actually was the one that didn't he bring up
- 20:08Sage in the press conference the post game?
- 20:10I think he did. In a positive.
- 20:12Oh absolutely you know yeah there's not many negatives that
- 20:15you can have but you're a home you get 6 free throws in front
- 20:18of 13,500 and change which was good to see you have everything
- 20:23in front of you you come out lethargic again OK they're sick.
- 20:28How long does this excuse last It came up the Minnesota game
- 20:31now it's here now here you go to Purdue get an IV all right so
- 20:35they're going to get blow up by Purdue.
- 20:37They're sick here they go to Indiana this this is trending
- 20:40disappointing because yes there are plenty of very winnable
- 20:43games in front of them after this two game road trip out to
- 20:45Indiana. What are the quality where the
- 20:48quality wins are they beating Nebraska No are they beating
- 20:52Purdue No no. Where's the quality win coming
- 20:55from? They're going to Madison and
- 20:58winning. Well, that would that would look
- 21:00better now based on this past weekend, but even that's not an
- 21:02elite level win. Yes, there's a lot of victories
- 21:04in there. This resume, if it plays out in
- 21:06this fashion because the advanced metrics still like this
- 21:09team. I still say this is a top 20
- 21:112014 bubble team trend. Yeah, I'm not saying that this
- 21:14team is missing the NC double AI don't think that's going to
- 21:16happen. I think the metrics are going to
- 21:18have them in, but at what level to win a couple of games not not
- 21:23the team that we're seeing now. The Iowa women had a huge
- 21:28comeback. Now, I didn't see it.
- 21:30I didn't see a minute of it. But apparently fear back back in
- 21:32the lineup. And how big of a difference was
- 21:33that? She was huge.
- 21:34It was what she did. Defense, yes, her defensive and
- 21:37that's what she is. Yeah, she had one big shot in
- 21:39there. But most importantly, it's what
- 21:41she does on that end of the floor and her ability to lock up
- 21:45on that end of the floor. So Indiana not very good this
- 21:48year, took a step back, still skilled offensively for the most
- 21:51part. And a big reason is because they
- 21:53got the top scorer in the in the Big 10 and sees it.
- 21:57Siski who went off in the first half, she finished one of 11 her
- 22:01last eleven shots from the floor and fear Bob was a big part of
- 22:04that. How about that?
- 22:05She was tremendous. They got going a little bit and
- 22:08chitchat had a huge 3 in there. She's so fun to watch.
- 22:11She's absolutely tremendous. So fun to watch.
- 22:13And another one where she didn't look great at moments but came
- 22:16up with a big shot. So Iowa finds a way.
- 22:18Their schedule is going to get much more difficult as well.
- 22:21And with Iowa State, with the Eddie Brown injury, I wonder.
- 22:24Right. Three in a row and not even in
- 22:28it. No.
- 22:29Against a West Virginia team again, that's also K Yeah.
- 22:32But coupled with the Cincinnati loss, you wonder this team we
- 22:35were talking about, Bill Fedley's best team.
- 22:38And for a while they looked like that.
- 22:40Without Eddie Brown, No, this team's going to be going back
- 22:43the other way or, you know, mid level seed, get to the
- 22:45tournament, maybe win a game. Yeah, that's about it.
- 22:48Because even crooks, she can't do it alone.
- 22:50I mean, she's she's not the type of player that can just.
- 22:53I'm gonna bring it up. She's gonna run everything.
- 22:54She didn't take a shot in the third quarter.
- 22:55That's crazy. That's crazy.
- 22:57Yeah. Alright, we'll take a time out.
- 22:59Scott Dockerman joins us next. We'll get his thoughts just real
- 23:03quick. It's 'cause it's Friday night.
- 23:05It's a couple of days behind us now.
- 23:07This Indiana team, I mean, how do you beat them?
- 23:09You know, I don't think you do either.
- 23:11No. Is it over?
- 23:12Would you late? Unless you complete a screen
- 23:13pass, then you beat them. But you can extate him.
- 23:16That's a different guy. That is true.
- 23:21Would you lay the half? Yeah, I think I'd be, too. 13
- 23:241/2. I'm.
- 23:25I'm with you. I might lay 20 1/2.
- 23:28Miami. Nice story and basically a home
- 23:31game for Miami. But it won't be.
- 23:33No, because Indiana's going to take over.
- 23:35Yeah, it was 9010. Estimates of 9010 in terms of
- 23:38percentages of fans at the Beach Bowl.
- 23:40Wild. I get Oregon.
- 23:41It's a long ways. One more on Mccaskey.
- 23:43I know we don't like them. Apparently he was paying for
- 23:47everybody's Uber. Did you see this?
- 23:49So it's about time. Well, I mean, how many owners do
- 23:51that though? Well, it's been 70 years of
- 23:53them. You think Jerry Jones is friend
- 23:55for Ubers? Probably maybe they do and don't
- 23:58get. But I just thought, wow, that's
- 24:01two things I got to bring up with TC and knock him down a peg
- 24:05because we got a lot of scar tissue here to breakthrough
- 24:07before we get to some positives, Doc necks, Miller and Cotton.
- 24:10Before we go to break though, guess what time it is?
- 24:12We are back in another one of these keyword weeks.
- 24:16It's time to head to kxno.com. You can enter this contest by
- 24:21entering the keyword. A pop up box will appear.
- 24:23The keywords pay. Pay at kxno.com.
- 24:26Your chance to win $1000 pay at kxno.com.
- 24:30And that's for listeners of all of our stations, correct?
- 24:33Even if you're listening the Quad Cities, Sioux City, Cedar
- 24:36Rapids, IA City. Go to their station though,
- 24:38right? Or go to kxno.com and that pop
- 24:41up box will be there for you as well.
- 24:43Good stuff. Yeah, anybody can win this dot
- 24:45com, Miller and Condon. Scott Dockerman joins us next.
- 24:48It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 24:59Hi, Miller and Condon. Welcome back.
- 25:00Just past 12:30 on a Monday, Bill Sills covers Iowa State.
- 25:04He'll join us at the top of the one O clock hour.
- 25:07Let's get Scott Dockerman in here.
- 25:09He was a Carver yesterday. He's also a Bears fan.
- 25:11We should probably start there. By the way, gentlemen, were you
- 25:14surprised that they broke the Alex Bregman news right in the
- 25:16middle of the Bears game? Yes, Wasn't Did that strike?
- 25:19He was odd, Doc. A little bit, yeah.
- 25:22I mean. But you know, baseball is its
- 25:25own end sometimes. I remember when I used to cover
- 25:28it, and this is a long time ago, 20 plus years ago.
- 25:30And it's just like. It kind of doesn't know that
- 25:33anything else be outside of it exists, but but the heck of a
- 25:37night in Chicago, that's for. Sure, absolutely.
- 25:39So Trent grabbed the bottle halfway to start the
- 25:42second-half. He cracked the bottle.
- 25:43How? Well, what were you thinking is
- 25:45the second-half kick off was about to ensue?
- 25:48I went the other way around. I was drinking in the first half
- 25:51and I figured it wasn't working, so yeah.
- 25:52We worked together. Put us.
- 25:54I went to Diet Pepsi after that and it worked.
- 25:57Put a slug in the jug. Good stuff.
- 25:58Well, I want to obviously talk a lot of college football with you
- 26:01as we're down to the championship game, but let's
- 26:03start with Carver yesterday. You know what, Doc?
- 26:06It's been really good to see and and I hope it continues and I
- 26:09hope it builds because it and it's going to by the looks of
- 26:12things, it's going to take some time.
- 26:13But you've been in Carver a bunch over the years when it was
- 26:16banged out and to see it, you know, the fans kind of move away
- 26:20as they have done. It's nice to see that they're at
- 26:23least willing to give this new product to try.
- 26:25I hope it sustains and actually build because you know, it is
- 26:29obviously as all buildings are, it's a different building, a
- 26:32different environment when the fan base is behind the team.
- 26:36Yeah, for sure. I mean, there was there was a
- 26:38juncture when Iowa was thinking a comeback and and, and this was
- 26:41only the second time I'd actually been to a basketball
- 26:44game this year. I went to his debut at home.
- 26:47And and then this one just cause it's in between the, the the
- 26:51games that I'm covering for football.
- 26:52But he and you know, there's a juncture where it it didn't
- 26:58leave any of the action on the floor, didn't leave 100
- 27:02decibels. It was all above it.
- 27:04And I thought, OK, this is a this is a little bit different
- 27:07era. I mean, the vibes were
- 27:08different. The music in the arena is
- 27:10different. And some people don't like it
- 27:12because it's not as traditional. I think it's more modern.
- 27:15And I think it's more important that to kind of cater to that.
- 27:18And and I felt like the crowd was into it all the way up to
- 27:22the very, very end when I realized it couldn't happen.
- 27:25I didn't see people scattering for the exits at the under four
- 27:28time out the way they have in the past.
- 27:30And and I think that's really healthy for this fan base.
- 27:33It's it's taking some time. There's been a lot of apathy
- 27:36and, and understandably so. And, and, you know, yesterday
- 27:39they were playing a better team. Illinois is better than Iowa.
- 27:42You know, maybe at the end of the year, Iowa figures out a way
- 27:44to beat an Illinois in the Big 10 tournament or something.
- 27:46But as of right now, Illinois is a better team.
- 27:49Iowa is a good team, but Iowa still learning to work together.
- 27:52You can tell on offense that things just sometimes aren't
- 27:55working right, that, that people are going different directions
- 27:59and, and that needs to be fixed. I think it'll, it will take
- 28:02time. But otherwise, I, I, I do think
- 28:05that it's, it's building something.
- 28:06And that's something that, you know, a year ago at this time,
- 28:09we knew that it was flatlining. I definitely had and now you
- 28:12have at least a renewed sense of optimism and and going forward.
- 28:16There were stretches in this game, though, they just didn't
- 28:18play well and not doing things there was.
- 28:20I'm not sure if you had a chance to see it as you were brought a
- 28:22watching the game there in person, but on the broadcast
- 28:25they had McCullum in the huddle. He's imploring, begging his
- 28:29guys. Just can you just listen to what
- 28:31we're trying to tell you guys to do?
- 28:32They're going underneath the screens.
- 28:34They get off to another slow start here.
- 28:36It didn't feel like they were locked in.
- 28:38Is it the illness? Is that the reason?
- 28:40Or is there something else where reveries in this team just
- 28:42doesn't seem real, locked in like they had been in different
- 28:45parts in December? Couple of things.
- 28:48I mean, you know, and again, I'm not quite the expert I once was
- 28:51on this, but from what I can tell, you know, early on, I
- 28:55mean, you're, you're down 20 to 5 and this is not the team you
- 28:58want to be down 20 to 5 against. Illinois is very skilled and
- 29:03they're they're connected. And I was not connected.
- 29:05And I think that they haven't all embraced every single
- 29:11teaching aspect that Ben McCollum is is pushing for.
- 29:14And and Ben, one of the things I realized after the game and
- 29:18listening to him, I don't know that I've ever seen a coach that
- 29:22just knows the game so well inside and out as Ben McCollum.
- 29:27He is, you know, it's been described to me previously that
- 29:29he's like a salon to basketball. And there been NBA coaches who
- 29:33consult him on things and you can tell that he understands so
- 29:37much of it. But the players themselves
- 29:39aren't taking that the scout and applying it to the floor.
- 29:44And, and I think that's something that's that's got to
- 29:46be troubling. And I think a couple other
- 29:48things. You know, when you know, you
- 29:50know, you choose not to play Brandon, you know Hassan, you
- 29:53know that illness is a part of it and you're playing against a
- 29:55really good team that you just can't have some mistakes.
- 29:59And and then there were easy shots that they missed.
- 30:02And when you're down, you've got to make those.
- 30:04And all that being said, you know, I, I still think that
- 30:07there are miles ahead of where they were last year at this time
- 30:10on the floor. And I, and I think, you know
- 30:13that this week they play Purdue. I know that's going to be a
- 30:15really big challenge over at Mackey, but I still think this
- 30:18team's got a chance to to make the tournament and be very
- 30:21competitive once they reach it. Well, let's get to the national
- 30:25championship game as we're down to one game.
- 30:27Speaking of competitive Dock, I just I'm almost at the point
- 30:30that I that I'm hoping it's competitive.
- 30:32I just I just watched this Indiana a wagon go up and down.
- 30:36It's just it's remarkable to watch.
- 30:39Obviously, I don't you know, I don't know how how many
- 30:42different ways we can come up with, you know, some way to say
- 30:44we've never we can't believe that this Signeti has been able
- 30:48to do this as quickly as he has. Mendoza is is unbelievably
- 30:52accurate. He gets the ball out so damn
- 30:54quickly. He can run it if he has to.
- 30:57Doc. I just fear that that the
- 30:59national championship game on Monday night, it is going to be
- 31:03not a walk over. But I, I just can't see it being
- 31:06competitive. Doc, I hope I'm wrong.
- 31:09But yeah, there's some things that you could lean on, which is
- 31:14if you want to take individual talent into consideration, Miami
- 31:18has more individual talent. I mean, I think they have more
- 31:22guys who are going to play at the NFL level or at least get
- 31:26drafted there then probably Indiana does.
- 31:27But when you look at the way they play in every single
- 31:31aspect, I mean, there is no weakness on that team.
- 31:33It's not like, well, we can run the ball on Indiana and then no,
- 31:37you can't do that. You can't run, you can't pass.
- 31:39They could pass at will. They find your weaknesses and
- 31:43exploited. I mean, I I was blown away how
- 31:47how much they attacked the boundary the left side of of
- 31:50their offense in in the first couple of drives is like Oregon
- 31:53just didn't even realize it or something.
- 31:55It was, you know, whether it was the run or the past, it was just
- 31:58constant. And and as you said, Mendoza is
- 32:01a difference maker because he has he could throw at any angle
- 32:05anywhere on the on the field, you know, right hash to the left
- 32:09sideline just has an amazing, you know, gun.
- 32:11And I, I talked to the Alabama safety who's pretty good, Bray
- 32:15Hubbard. And, and I asked him about
- 32:17watching him and he's like, you know, he made a throw in the
- 32:19Iowa game that just blew me away.
- 32:21And he was describing just how, you know, it was kind of down
- 32:24the field, across the field. And I mean, that's such a hard
- 32:27angle. Threw it into, you know, single
- 32:30or double high safety look and still was there.
- 32:33And it's just how remarkable he is.
- 32:36And then you throw on, you know, offensive lines to connected it.
- 32:40But with Miami, they do have talent and they have, you know,
- 32:43they're at home. They've got, you know, some
- 32:45pluses there, but I, I just boil it down to coaching And I, I
- 32:51mean, I'll take courtesy that against anybody, but especially
- 32:53against Mario Cristobal, who's, you know, I, I thought the other
- 32:57day against old miss, I thought, oh, miss, you know, played hard,
- 33:01but Miami had the ball for 41 minutes and barely won.
- 33:05I just, I think that, you know, Indiana's a superiorly coached
- 33:11team and I can't say the same about Miami.
- 33:13Indiana went out there, they brought in veterans with them
- 33:16from James Madison guys with multiple years of eligibility.
- 33:19They had influx of cash that has helped and certainly that
- 33:22continues. And Mark you've been donating
- 33:23more money to the football program still the sustainability
- 33:26of it looks like they're doing great in the portal.
- 33:29Can this continue? Are we going to be talking about
- 33:31now on a yearly process that Indiana, we got to start off the
- 33:34you're talking about them as national championship
- 33:36contenders. I don't know that you start off
- 33:39talking about them every year as national title contenders, but I
- 33:42think you start you, you add them to the conversation.
- 33:45I think they are perennial top 10 caliber team now.
- 33:48And you know, quarterbacks going to matter.
- 33:51And in some years they're going to strike out a little bit in
- 33:52the portal. And, and I, I think you, the 1
- 33:55area that they still need to catch up on is, is actual
- 33:58recruiting. You know, freshman, I mean,
- 34:00they're not getting four and five stars.
- 34:02They're not being able to beat in Ohio State or Michigan or
- 34:05some of those teams for those elite level prospects.
- 34:08And that does catch up with you. But I think you look at Indiana
- 34:11and you say with that coaching staff, with the players they get
- 34:15from the portal, the way they develop these athletes, there's
- 34:18no reason that, you know, an 8, an 8 and 4 would be the basement
- 34:23of what they can do at this level.
- 34:25And and, you know, they look to me like they're going to be a
- 34:28perennial 10 and two type of team, which means that they're
- 34:31capable of getting into the tournament every year.
- 34:33So Indiana is it's just, it's a remarkable story.
- 34:37And in some ways we haven't discussed it enough.
- 34:39In some ways it feels like we've talked about it too much.
- 34:41But it's it's just unbelievable. I mean, KU football would be the
- 34:45one equivalent I would have to Indiana, but but even then, KU's
- 34:51had a little bit of spikes. Indiana never did.
- 34:54No, that's that's an excellent point.
- 34:56Loved your piece on the comparison because for me, 2019
- 35:00LSU with all the talent they had on that football game, in
- 35:03particular in Joe Burrow, who I still think to this day is the
- 35:06best quarterback in the NFLI. Know I'm going to get pushed
- 35:08back on that, but I love them. Obviously those two receivers,
- 35:11they had some incredible guys on the defensive side of the
- 35:15football. I I, I know it's impossible to
- 35:18do Doc. You just make your case on paper
- 35:20and let the audience decide. But those are the two certainly
- 35:23above recent ilk that I think would match up best against each
- 35:28other because I mean, obviously I think there's a huge edge in
- 35:31there when it comes to head coach and everybody loves order
- 35:35on. But the Signeti story is
- 35:36unbelievable. What what was behind the piece
- 35:39Doc and kind of what was I guess your takeaways from doing it
- 35:42yourself? Yeah, that was.
- 35:44Kind of one of my editors and I talked about that on, you know,
- 35:47after the game. So I put it together pretty
- 35:49quickly, but. This, I think what anybody.
- 35:53Asks, you know, what is most dominant team we've seen in
- 35:55recent memory and it's been LSU and and the offense, I mean 61
- 36:00touchdowns from Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and Justin
- 36:04Jefferson, what an offense that was.
- 36:06It was unbelievable. But you know that this Indiana
- 36:10team is putting itself in that similar category with how
- 36:13dominant it is now. It doesn't have the offensive
- 36:15explosiveness. Nobody does.
- 36:18But when you look at the the full picture, they're way better
- 36:21on defense and and they're pretty explosive on offense too.
- 36:25And both of them had the Heisman Trophy winner.
- 36:27But you know, I, I would expect Fernando Mendoza to be the
- 36:29number one pick in the NFL draft and Joe Burrow is I, I'm with
- 36:34you. I, I think he's tremendous and I
- 36:36think he's being wasted in Cincinnati.
- 36:38Injuries have hurt him, But I think it's Cincinnati, the most
- 36:41poorly run organization in NFL, if not all pro sports.
- 36:46And, and I think with Fernando Mendoza, you know, he goes the
- 36:51Raiders, I would assume that's probably where he'll end up.
- 36:53I mean, he'll have some lumps too.
- 36:55But man, comparing those two and that those two teams, I mean,
- 36:59it'd be fun. I, I, it would be a definite
- 37:01shoot out. I don't think that, you know,
- 37:03because I don't know that even Indiana has the DBS that can
- 37:07match up, you know, down and down out with with Chase and
- 37:11Jefferson, but they do have the offense to keep up.
- 37:13And so I would expect that to be a high scoring football game.
- 37:17Doc, in our final minute here, Iowa, how we come full circle,
- 37:20Iowa football portal, Kirk doing some work in there.
- 37:23What have you seen and is there a guy or two that you like
- 37:26that's going to help out this Iowa team for 2026?
- 37:29I really like it. I'm, I'm kind of surprised how
- 37:32well I like it because, you know, they went to the FCS
- 37:35ranks, but they didn't just grab guys.
- 37:37I mean, they grabbed all Americans.
- 37:38There's three, you know, all Americans from FCS and then
- 37:43there's three freshmen all Americans.
- 37:45So you in the way that they did it, they've only got what, one
- 37:48or two that only have one year. The rest of them have kind of,
- 37:52you know, multi years. And I think when you look at
- 37:55that, that's, that's a really sound smart strategy.
- 37:57And I, I, I've seen a couple people kind of laugh.
- 37:59Oh, they all they did was go get FCS guys.
- 38:01Well, go look at Indiana's roster.
- 38:04You know, you get James Madison and there's not much difference
- 38:06between them and a Villanova and you know, those types of teams
- 38:10and and oh, by the way, Cam Ward, the number one overall
- 38:13pick last year from Miami, he was from Incarnate word.
- 38:15Jared Verse was Albany before he went to Florida State.
- 38:18So I I think it's, it's a smart it's a smart strategy.
- 38:22They've got a couple more holes, but but you know, they've really
- 38:25done some work and I think it's something that that will pay off
- 38:29for them this year. Enjoy.
- 38:30Florida Doc, thanks for doing this.
- 38:32Appreciate you coming on as always.
- 38:33Thank you, Scott. Dr. Man.
- 38:35Thanks. Much appreciate it.
- 38:36Good to talk to you, Scott Dockerman as we check in on doc
- 38:38from the Athletic. Love that piece. 2019 LSU.
- 38:41Boy, they had some dudes, didn't they?
- 38:43Yes, they did. God come back, wrap up our
- 38:45number one and that might he may be the other team, Miami of Todd
- 38:49Seaver's team, the O2 teams, was it O2 or O1, whatever.
- 38:52Well, the O2 won, won the national championship.
- 38:54The O2 team I think maybe had more talent.
- 38:57Unbelievable. Miller and Condon glad you're
- 38:59with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:11Hi, Miller Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network with
- 39:15you here until 2:00. Bill Seals on Iowa State coming
- 39:18up to kick off our number one. Well, Iowa State's got a big
- 39:21when we kept referring to this when we looked ahead schedule to
- 39:24see if they could, you know, make it through January
- 39:27unscathed. We both thought that they could
- 39:29and both pointed out tomorrow's game against Kansas obviously as
- 39:32the maybe the most difficult. I'm not so sure.
- 39:35Kansas is not playing well. Bill Self said last week,
- 39:38before, I think it was before the West Virginia game, guys
- 39:41don't know how to play with Darren Peterson.
- 39:43Darren Peterson doesn't know how to play with those guys.
- 39:45I will put this in there, though, Historically doesn't
- 39:48happen often, but it's been a rarity.
- 39:50But when it does happen, Kansas, a home underdog as they will be,
- 39:54and they are elite. Are they?
- 39:56Yes, and they will be a dog at home tomorrow.
- 39:58Remember a couple years ago they took on UConn that went on to
- 40:01win a national championship. Yes, yes, yes.
- 40:03I think there's been one or two Houston teams that have gone
- 40:05down there as dogs here recently.
- 40:07A member was a Saturday game. There have been a few of those,
- 40:10though. When it does happen, Kansas is
- 40:13normally great in this spot. So everything we've seen,
- 40:16everything our eyes tell us state's going to cruise in this
- 40:19one. Kansas Stakes.
- 40:22Just historically, this has been an Ave. where The Jayhawks
- 40:26definitely going to be good. Ken Palm has it A5.
- 40:29Do they? That's just why it's probably
- 40:30going to be a smidge down. They're one and two in the Big
- 40:3312. I mean, that's just hard to
- 40:34fathom at Kansas and they just were Peterson played a ton
- 40:38against West Virginia. They just never could get West
- 40:41Virginia just looked better than them.
- 40:43I mean, just think of that. There's times that shoot the
- 40:45lights out. You upset a team.
- 40:47West Virginia. Good teams have struggled in
- 40:49Morgantown, absolutely. But just in general, this Kansas
- 40:52team, No, you're right. There's something, not
- 40:54something's missing. Yeah.
- 40:55And is it just the Peterson thing?
- 40:57Is there more tumult than just a guy that's been banged up and
- 40:59has been injured with that hamstring injury?
- 41:01Is there more growing on there? Everybody gets good players now.
- 41:04Maybe part of that. It's a very similar to
- 41:06conversation to the SEC in football and Kansas basketball,
- 41:10isn't it ours? Agree.
- 41:11It really is our number 2 more and I will stay with Bill Seals.
- 41:16Bama Bob will join us. So will Mr. Monday night as he
- 41:18looks down to bring down the curtain with another winning
- 41:22night. Miller and Condon, glad you're
- 41:24with us. We're talking sports with you on
- 41:26the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
