- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, we're heading to the polls on May twenty one.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Plenty of you are probably going to head out and
- 0:04Speaker 2: vote early though we know that that early voting starts
- 0:07Speaker 2: from Monday next week, so May nine. And what it
- 0:10Speaker 2: means is there are plenty of Territorians trying to work
- 0:12Speaker 2: out exactly what some of the candidates stand for and
- 0:16Speaker 2: why they've decided to run.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And tomorrow at about.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Twelve thirty I think it kicks off, the Rotary Club
- 0:22Speaker 2: of Darwin are holding a Meet the Candidates forum and
- 0:26Speaker 2: joining me on the line to tell us a little
- 0:27Speaker 2: bit more about it is Alistair Lindsay from the Rotary
- 0:31Speaker 2: Club of Darwin.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Good morning to you, Alistair.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Good morning cady mate. Now for having me on.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Oh, no problem at all.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I think it's a great event that you guys put
- 0:41Speaker 2: on and you've done it in previous years obviously for
- 0:45Speaker 2: the federal election, but also done it in previous years
- 0:48Speaker 2: for the Northern Territory election. And it's a good opportunity
- 0:51Speaker 2: for people to find out a bit more about these
- 0:53Speaker 2: candidates and what they stand for, isn't.
- 0:55Speaker 3: It it is? Catie, Yes, the Rodrick Club of day
- 1:00Speaker 3: When is organizing and Meet the candidates. It's a Solomon
- 1:05Speaker 3: Tomorrow forum tomorrow at the Hotel Darwin. It actually starts
- 1:12Speaker 3: at one o'clock. That's when the speakers start. But I've
- 1:15Speaker 3: been saying to everyone please get there with it earlier.
- 1:19Speaker 3: But I've got to say Katie that there's been a
- 1:21Speaker 3: little bit of bad news.
- 1:24Speaker 1: We start.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry, you go Alastair, Yeah with his COVID.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, so he's got COVID. He said that he wants
- 1:37Speaker 3: to be there and we'll do his best to give
- 1:40Speaker 3: the event some sort of time, probably by zoom, but
- 1:44Speaker 3: we're waiting on further advice in that respect. We don't
- 1:47Speaker 3: know what will happen there. I've got to say.
- 1:52Speaker 1: It's a tough one, isn't it. But it's the it's
- 1:54Speaker 1: the days and times that we're living in.
- 1:56Speaker 2: A bit at the moment we done. We're going for
- 1:58Speaker 2: old Anthony Elberdez. He was in the same situation last week.
- 2:02Speaker 3: It's an occupational has it is. You don't know what's
- 2:05Speaker 3: going to happen from day to day.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Well, I'll still be there, Alistair, I'll still be there
- 2:11Speaker 2: to moderate it for you, and you'll still have the
- 2:13Speaker 2: majority of all the You'll have all the other candidates,
- 2:16Speaker 2: won't you.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Well, we have. So there are six candidates for the
- 2:22Speaker 3: seat of Solomon. Now one of them that's the candidate
- 2:26Speaker 3: for the United Australia Party. She has advised that they
- 2:33Speaker 3: can't attend and that advice was received several days ago,
- 2:39Speaker 3: which leaves five.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Now the ALP is a real question out there. That
- 2:44Speaker 4: leaves four. All I can do is hope that no
- 2:48Speaker 4: other candidate can't make it.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm sure sure they'll all be there. Well, if they
- 2:54Speaker 1: want people to vote for them, they're going to have
- 2:56Speaker 1: to be there. And you know, this is the thing.
- 2:58Speaker 2: It's all about people finding out more about what they
- 3:00Speaker 2: stand for and why they've decided to put their hand
- 3:04Speaker 2: up for the Sea of Solomon.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I should say that this is a community
- 3:10Speaker 3: service organized by the Road Your Club, as I said,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and it's good to be able to see and here
- 3:17Speaker 3: the candidates who are running in the contest. It's a
- 3:21Speaker 3: forum which is spontaneous as you know. The audience asked
- 3:27Speaker 3: the questions and the candidates are there in person, and
- 3:32Speaker 3: the club is very careful to make sure that each
- 3:34Speaker 3: candidate is given equal time.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys make sure that it's incredibly fair I
- 3:40Speaker 2: know that, you know that you've got the rules set
- 3:43Speaker 2: out and everybody knows what they're in for, and it
- 3:46Speaker 2: should be a fantastic afternoon tomorrow.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Now what time do people need to get there? And
- 3:52Speaker 1: is there a cover charge and stuff like that.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yes, there is a ten dollar charge which is intended
- 3:59Speaker 3: to cover the club expenses and we'll see how we
- 4:04Speaker 3: get on there. But ten dollars for that, you get
- 4:08Speaker 3: a brisk band, you get twenty percent of drinks and
- 4:12Speaker 3: specials on stakes. The Hotel Darwin, I've got to say,
- 4:15Speaker 3: has been very good, very corporative.
- 4:17Speaker 2: There's nothing better really than politics in the pub, I
- 4:20Speaker 2: reckon alistair.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Look well, yeah, I like to think that the event
- 4:24Speaker 3: is something akin to the town hall political meetings yep,
- 4:30Speaker 3: the old fashioned political meetings.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Or town hall. And so if you've got a question,
- 4:37Speaker 4: and this is the opportunity to ask it to a
- 4:40Speaker 4: candidate personally.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And so get to the Hotel Darwin about twelve thirty.
- 4:45Speaker 2: But it's one pm kickoff, so they'll have a bit
- 4:48Speaker 2: of time to get organized and they will have the
- 4:50Speaker 2: opportunity to ask a question if they want to from
- 4:52Speaker 2: the audience.
- 4:54Speaker 4: That's exactly it.
- 4:55Speaker 3: And let me say that the moderator is Katie Woolf
- 4:58Speaker 3: herself one day at nine and quite used to interviewing
- 5:05Speaker 3: politicians and budding politicians.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Try my best to keep up the control. I'll try
- 5:11Speaker 2: my best. Well, Alistair, good to talk to you this morning,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and we will see you tomorrow. And of course anybody
- 5:17Speaker 2: who wants to come along, they can just turn up
- 5:19Speaker 2: and they'll be able to come in and pay that
- 5:21Speaker 2: cover charge.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And be part of it all. Yes, indeed, wonderful stuff.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Yeah, let's hope it's a good one.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sorry that one of the main candidates can't
- 5:32Speaker 3: be there, but he's I think he's going to do
- 5:34Speaker 3: his best to try to appear one person. Sorry by
- 5:39Speaker 3: not in person, but I've got to say that when
- 5:41Speaker 3: I spoke with him last night it was good enough
- 5:44Speaker 3: to give me a single. He did sound quite crook.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Yeah, poor bugger.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Well yeah, and you know it's not ideal for any
- 5:53Speaker 2: candidate to be in this situation. So yeah, I'm sure
- 5:56Speaker 2: we'll all try our best to, you know, to make
- 5:59Speaker 2: sure that everybody's in included.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Alistair, thank you. We'll see you tomorrow.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Thanks Katie, thank you.
