- 4:49the place open and went in the back storeroom was pretty much upset and looked
- 4:55like it had been cleaned down well well. We flashed our lights around and
- 4:58pretty soon we went onto a guy laying on the floor with a cut on
- 5:01his head allan tooy's pockets. While the partner was calling for an ambulance and
- 5:05found out that he was Sternberg, the guy who owns the fur chap.
- 5:10Where is he now? They're in the general hospital. I reckon he was
- 5:13all cold when they caught at him. Away, oh Ley, get a
- 5:16general hospital on the wire and find out how this fellow Sternberg is getting along,
- 5:20right, go ahead, Ryan, Well that's about all there is.
- 5:24Setting the eggs cleaned the place out. A click named Andrews came in about
- 5:29eight o'clock and said that the furs were worth eighty thousand bucks. What time
- 5:31did you say you got the call? I thirty two this morning, sir,
- 5:34and you made it in two minutes. Yes, this report from the
- 5:38Dead Shorty Company shows that the burglar alarm was tripped at five twenty nine.
- 5:42We had to call in the here two minutes later, and in two more
- 5:45minutes you boys were on the scene at you saw nothing of the robberts.
- 5:46That's right, sir, and I guess they'd gone. Captain. You mean
- 5:49to tell me that a bunch of giggs can break into the shop and see
- 5:51eighty thousand dollars worth of furs and get away inside of four minutes. Well,
- 5:56own nothing. It can't be done. Just hear have any witnesses,
- 5:59no thing that wasn't a soul in sight set in the paper boy, did
- 6:02you talk to him, Yeah, and he said, but he was positive
- 6:04that there hadn't been a car down that street in the last hour. Oh
- 6:08he did, did he? Well, that's what he said the listen Ryan.
- 6:12Whoever stole those furs had to use the truck and if they did,
- 6:15that newsboy would have heard of or seen it. What was his name,
- 6:17azy, Yeah, wait a minute, I have it here some ways.
- 6:21Joey Yarwick. There's three four twol in hare Fell Street. Oh so it
- 6:27was Joey Yarvis who says he didn't hear any sounds of a truck. Huh,
- 6:30Well, that's what he told us, Sir Pley. He's been a
- 6:32pickout on Joey or Yarwiz. You'll probably find him around the star pool room.
- 6:36Elligans, it's the same kid we had in here from milk stealing about
- 6:39a month ago. Okay, cap'n oh. The hospital report that Sternberg is
- 6:44okay, he went home about an hour ago. Minor contusion. All right,
- 6:47thanks, anything else for me, capt'n Yeah, he's after Sternberger's house
- 6:50and get him down here for the lineup this afternoon. He may be able
- 6:54to pick out a few faces from the drag net. Right, sir,
- 7:14here's mister Sternberg, the fir man captain. Oh, yes, down place
- 7:17this officer captain told me you wanted to see me. Yes, in regard
- 7:21to the robbery. Oh how's your head? It's better? Did you get
- 7:26a glimpse of the man who hitches? And in the storeroom it was dark?
- 7:30I wonder if you'd mind explaining, mister Sternberg, how you happen to
- 7:32be in your shop at five thirty in the morning or come to the overstown
- 7:36early. Yes, but you always make it a custom to come down at
- 7:40five thirty in the morning. Nine this morning, I was taking the six
- 7:44o'clock train for Clifton to visit Mi, myn brother. I come to the
- 7:46robbers by to got some papers for him to sign. I was in the
- 7:50office and in the storeroom I heard noises, I say, I walked quiet
- 7:55to the banks, and all of a sudden some one hit me, and
- 7:58I knew nothing. If your furs doesn't seem to bother you much, wore
- 8:01I should it? Hey? From two years back? I hit them first.
- 8:03In short oh, I see, they're gonna let the insurance company worry
- 8:07about it. Did you hear any words spoken before you were hip come?
- 8:11I would not to remember. What'd you say? The man who hits you
- 8:15was a small man or a large man? He brought a big man.
- 8:18I see. Oh, mister Sternberg, when you entered your store at five
- 8:22thirty this morning, did you see the newsboy on the corner? Did you
- 8:26see anything of a truck? A truck nine? I see. Well,
- 8:31we're holding our regular weekday line up in the auditorium in just a minute.
- 8:35What did a step in and give the guys who paraded by in front of
- 8:37the microphone the once over? If you see anyone or hearing any voices a
- 8:41sound familiar, just let me know. But we're only asking a few assistants
- 8:46in the recovery of your first Who's all right? Good? Oh you just

- 9:33first degree robbery and not as Now he comes back on a charge of robbery

- 9:41him? What about a Tony nice fellacy? Clean upright? Citizens? Take

- 10:18I take him down. Next prisoner. Wow, I didn't know the boys
- 10:26had picked you up yet, Joey, Well, what you got me down
- 10:28for? This time? Captain? I'll Joey, you know why we brought
- 10:31you down because you didn't tell us the truth about that fur offer this morning
- 10:35a your folks make me six. I tell you, tomb flat Foot that
- 10:37I ain't saying nothing. I ain't he ain't gonna tell nothing. Yeah,
- 10:41I know you're a lying Joey man. This is Joey yarwith sells papers at
- 10:46six and ready. Used to be the leader of the East Side hoodlums until
- 10:50he broke him up. I did even here a month ago on a milk
- 10:52stealing charge, but he lied out of it. Take a good look at
- 10:54him, man, he'll probably be after him for murder one of these days.
- 11:00All right, take him away next president. Well, I'm sorry you
- 11:26didn't see anyone who looked like the man who is Missus Sternberg. After all,
- 11:31it was just a shop in the dark. Yes, I don't want
- 11:35here to see you, Sir Joey Year with his mother. Oh yes,
- 11:39I asked her to come down. I'm going now. When a minute,
- 11:41mister Sternberg, you still have to fill out the robbery report. You'll just
- 11:46wait until I finished with Missus Yar. Let's uh sorry, and Ryan,
- 11:50but I must be now. And sit down, mister Sternberg. I'll just
- 11:52be a minute. This time. Trouble again out there there? It's nothing
- 12:03serious, Mamma, yarlis here. Sit down. Always I was such a
- 12:07good muster to him. Always. I tried to send him to school and
- 12:11buy him life. Clue. Yeah there now, Joey hasn't done anything bad.
- 12:16Here here, stop crying. Maybe you can help us out. Oh
- 12:20oh, the trouble with us is that we can't get along with Joey.
- 12:24I'm where he developed a hatred for cops. Consequently, he does things which
- 12:28are against the law. Joey and the law just don't hit it off.
- 12:33I thought that, perhaps, all right, bring him in. I'm sorry
- 12:43to keep you waiting, mister Sternberg, but I have a hunst that we
- 12:46might pick up a clue from Joey yar with if our plan work. I
- 12:50just had dumps like we're I can walk along. What do you want now,
- 12:54Copper? I just wanted to have a little talk with you. Joey,

- 13:05I guess you're right, Joan. That fella has to be tough,
- 13:09doesn't it. Yeah, you'll be getting allows the end of the dale all
- 13:11the time. Fella doesn't have to be crooked, Joey. Oh no,
- 13:16your cops are crooked. Why shouldn't wait? Pay? No, but your
- 13:18mother doesn't know that you're a crooked Joey. You lay my old lady out
- 13:20of that. That's the same. I'll bet it to break her heart know
- 13:22that you're rolling dunks and stealing milks. You lame my mother out of that.
- 13:26I'll bet you've got a good mother, Joey, someone who has worked
- 13:28hard to try to make a man out of you'd be awfully disappointed to know
- 13:33that you're growing up into a first place udlum Ah, what you don't know,
- 13:35don't hurt her? And I'm kin, what do I care? She'll

- 14:13of a fool. I guess, Oh, joe don't time out, straighten
- 14:18up, honest, I will honest my, Oh my god, what I
- 14:20captain? Yeah, you'll make good Joey. And the way to start is
- 14:24to tell us just what you saw at mister Sternberg's fur house this morning.
- 14:28Excuse me her company. I just admitted mister Sternberg. Maybe something for us
- 14:33to work on. Oh ahead, Joey. You'll tell us, won't you?
- 14:37Yeah, don totin, I'll tell you sans guy you want Sternford,
- 14:41him and his father came in a truck this morning and cart it is a
- 14:43whole lot of way. He's planning to collect the insurance on them. First,
- 14:48he gave me ten bucks to keep an eye out for the cups,
- 14:52but I give it back here. Say there, that's chuck on the jaw
- 14:56from Captain Woodwick. What's more than may than all allows you so you could
- 14:58get me. Come on, ma, I'm sorry, he's busy. Now.
- 15:07Once that the thing happens to one officer, Inspector Bamley, some personal
- 15:11reason might account for. But when two officers disappear one after the other on
- 15:16the same detail, well I say something must be done. I agree with
- 15:20your wholeheartedly, Commissioner. When Detective Aigan disappeared on that assignment to pick up
- 15:24Jill Mogo last night, I felt that he might as have some personal reason
- 15:28for not calling in. But when Detective Sergeant Gregory failed to call him this
- 15:33morning on the same assignment, I knew that something was wrong. And here
- 15:37it is, more than twelve hours later, and we've heard nothing from either
- 15:39man. I have the entire personnel of the department something for them right now.
- 15:45Tell me, Inspector Bamble, was this mogul arrest anything more than the
- 15:48usual assignment? Well, yeah, you've you've read about Blackie Peters. Yes,
- 15:54your man arrested him for a participation in a gang land murder, didn't
- 15:58they all right, maybe before yesterday and he's still in jail. Yes,
- 16:02God Blake refused bonds this morning. Well, does this mogul arrest come into
- 16:07the picture. Well, Joe Moga is Blackie Peter's right hand man. He's
- 16:10one of them, the same charge. I see. I'm afraid you don't
- 16:14see all of the dog can I No. Both of these men are gunmen,
- 16:18Rodman and the nacted of the underworld for Big Steve Maloney. Maloney,
- 16:22Yeah, the same man who came here being elected councilman last year due to
- 16:26his gang in front. But Maloney, I know, I know. You
- 16:30think that the only reason we're after Steve Maloney is a violation of the state
- 16:33lawrence gambling houses. Yes, well it isn't. Steve Maloney is the head
- 16:37of the greatest criminal ring this state has ever known. And you think that
- 16:41Maloney may know something about the disappearance of Acon and Gregory, I certainly do.
- 16:45Let me get this straight, Inspector Domley. We have a notorious gunman
- 16:51in jail, Flacky Peter. That's right. We're looking for another member of
- 16:55the gang on a murdered charge, Joe Moga. Ye, both of these
- 16:59men work for Big Steve Maloney and two officers. Since to bring Joe Mogo
- 17:04to headquarters that disappears is that it in a nutshell? Well, why then
- 17:08don't you arrest Steve Maloney on suspicion of kidnapping because we've gotten hold in twenty
- 17:14four hours, person Commissioner. I've tried for a year to get something on
- 17:18Maloney, but he's too smart for us. The arrest of Blackie Peters is
- 17:21the first step, Chargian that I've been able to make. What do you
- 17:25think has become a detective agent and graduator? I confess that I haven't the
- 17:30slightest idea except that their disappearance is very irregular. Well, push things to
- 17:34the limit from it, distributticulars and offer a reward of one thousand dollars for
- 17:40information leading to their safe return. These men must be found right in the
- 17:45running and thank Steve Maloney. Possible one of those Sluggle models are possible for
- 17:52Oh yeah, well, not going to wait. Anything new might be big.
- 17:59Steve Maloney and one of his hired killers just came in to see me.
- 18:03Can you imagine a crust of that guy coming right in the police headquarter?
- 18:06You don't think, no, no, Steve Maloney is too smart or
- 18:08anything like that. He wouldn't try to deliver Blackie Peters with an army.
- 18:12Oh you're leaving commissioner. Yes, well that is I have a pressing engagement
- 18:19in the Mayor's office. I thought you might like to stick around and hear
- 18:22what Steve has to say. I know, well that is I'd like to
- 18:26But well, good day, Inspector. I'm sure you'll do everything in your
- 18:30power to find these, but I will say, are you by this door?
- 18:34If you don't mind, it would be well yeah, m hmm,
- 18:45yeah alone was a little whole. Send them in, come Oho, inspector
- 19:00mining Tony, what do you want to Steve? Mister Maloney to you copper?
- 19:04Since when? So? This is the way our public service great the
- 19:07taxpayers, is it? You know? The proper thing to do is to
- 19:10ask me to have a chair. There's a chair over there if you want
- 19:12to sit in it and say what you've got to say. I'm busy,
- 19:15Okay, set down over that, Tony, and you can keep your thug
- 19:18facing if you don't mind. They listen. That's thirty two men. They
- 19:26take your hands off. Then, I don't get tough, Maloney. Right,
- 19:30you don't think we'd be so dumb as to walk in the headquarters pack
- 19:33and riding to you. After all, we can read, we know you've
- 19:36got to sell them in law. Oh indeed, you've both got more brains
- 19:40than I gave you credit for. Sorry, Ryan, what in your mind?
- 19:45Steve? You've got an acquaintance of mind Blackie. Peter's in the jug,
- 19:48A good boy, an acquaintance of yours, A good boy. Don't
- 19:55make me laugh? All right, I've got him in a judg What about
- 19:57it? Nothing except in well I thought maybe all right, I got down
- 20:03to brass tacks. It's not what I hear. You got a couple of
- 20:06Dick's missing. Do you get that from a little bird? And you tell
- 20:10that little bird for me that my cops will show up? Yeah? And
- 20:12why have you got the entire force out comb in the city. Well,
- 20:15it is many of your business. But if you want to know, we're
- 20:18coming in the city for where's logan for Cicago authority? Logan? Right?
- 20:22When did he hit this bird? I don't know when he hit it,
- 20:25but he's going back to Chicago. He's out of twenty four hours. Oh,
- 20:27then you ain't looking for detectives. Aching and Gregory not yet. R
- 20:30aren't we admit that they're missing? It's a game, Ony, that's it.
- 20:36You've got Blackie Peter's and the jugs the short two dicks out of the
- 20:38detective Bureau. I was just thinking that if h well, maybe somebody left
- 20:45the door the Blackie still opened by a mistake. Maybe your two lost copper
- 20:48should come one thing home, you low down thirty snake. So now now
- 20:53I got the body's out of his horse, And if I ever catch you
- 20:56down here again, I'll judging myself to you no charge. Now get out
- 20:59hold of this. Yeah, you're going to be sorry for this. Mh
- 21:15mh what well? I gotta tell me for you black heat? Where's Logan
- 21:32in Chicago? Did I asked? That's a couple of you always get what
- 21:34you asked for. Shut him in that him just knowing where Now you two
- 21:38reps have got a long knife and peace for like that's you you got a
- 21:42lot in common. I'm gonna type tim the surprise catch of that year,
- 21:45having these two yeggs in the same cell. And she's right, yes,
- 21:49come along on my bisigar. You think luck he knows he's do to be
- 21:57sprung. He does that. That's people while who was talking to him today?
- 22:00All right, and when the thing comes off, we don't want any
- 22:03violence. Unlocked the fell, don't want to walk away from it like malonean
- 22:07stuck? Did you do right? Only? I can't see why you told
- 22:11me to take that bribe and let Blackly Petre's escape. You that end up
- 22:17to me are your certain sort. I am not going to get into a
- 22:19job over again. Oh of course not. You're acting under orders. You're
- 22:22a very odd thing. As soon as you unlock the fell, though,
- 22:26you better fade out of the picture for a few days. I don't want
- 22:27to see anything happened to you like you say. So you're with his leg
- 22:52and eh, yeah, what are you doing in this time? Thinks that
- 22:56to happen? I happy tear out. Somebody drop the bows and they picked
- 23:02me up down the top. Yeah you know, I get a drive on
- 23:03in this bag. We're gonna pretty tough fuck myself. Three Time News are
- 23:08in the big House and they got me up on a murder rap. Oh
- 23:11yeah, tough by here. I don't know. Maybe it ain't so bad.
- 23:15What do you mean? But that? Listen to you and look see
- 23:18I work for big Steve Maloney. Do you ever hear I am? Yeah,
- 23:22Steve sort of run things in this town, and he's got me off
- 23:25set for a break. What is it a delivery? Yeah, so the
- 23:27no rough stuff. If you've got old men that turned the screws on you.
- 23:32Yeah, Steve was down this morning and set him half a grain to
- 23:34turn the king and let me take it on the lamb. Yeah. Once

- 24:38that he does. Well, how did it work, Blackie? Like a

- 24:45turns the lofty They waited two minutes like you said, and then beat it
