- 0:00Speaker 1: Coming up. On this week's episode of Hip Hop Now Podcast,
- 0:04Speaker 1: I reviewed the brand new album from Jad God does
- 0:08Speaker 1: Like Ugly, Salt and Pepper continue their battle with You
- 0:12Speaker 1: and g over Master Recordings, and Kendrick and Drake do
- 0:18Speaker 1: battle again, but this time for the MTV v m
- 0:23Speaker 1: A Awards. He a fan. Let's do it. Welcome to
- 0:33Speaker 1: your pop Now podcast. If you from the future, you
- 0:39Speaker 1: know what you do show as out of so disrespect
- 0:45Speaker 1: the leg hip hop is say to today, Let's get
- 0:51Speaker 1: right into the business. What up, y'all? I am your
- 0:53Speaker 1: host Vegas and this it's Hip Hop Now podcasting podcast
- 0:57Speaker 1: specifically designed to keep you caught up on all things
- 1:00Speaker 1: hip hop music and culture that happened throughout the week.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Big shout out to the subscribers, the listeners over at
- 1:07Speaker 1: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts listening.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I appreciate you. I appreciate you for subscribing. I know
- 1:17Speaker 1: you reviewed on Apple podcasts. Right let me point right
- 1:20Speaker 1: in the camera if you're watching. If you watch, I
- 1:22Speaker 1: know you reviewed on Apple Podcasts, but I hope you do. Also.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Big shout out to those watching right here on YouTube
- 1:31Speaker 1: Hip Hop Now Pod. I appreciate the subscriptions to the podcast.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I got a lot of content on the way, you know,
- 1:41Speaker 1: some bonus content, some fun stuff, you know, and maybe
- 1:45Speaker 1: an interview or too who else. You never know, but
- 1:49Speaker 1: if you would like to know, stay locked in by
- 1:53Speaker 1: not only hitting subscribe, not only like in the videos,
- 1:58Speaker 1: not only commenting in joining the conversation, but also sharing
- 2:04Speaker 1: it with people right the heads, the hip hop heads
- 2:08Speaker 1: you know would enjoy this kind of content. But let's
- 2:13Speaker 1: just say, hey man, I do all of that, but
- 2:15Speaker 1: sometimes I forget fam I forget you even on well,
- 2:18Speaker 1: first of all, I ain't at at you. But second
- 2:23Speaker 1: of all, one way to just stay connected to when
- 2:27Speaker 1: new videos pop up is to hit that bell notification
- 2:31Speaker 1: icon right here on YouTube. So every time you go
- 2:35Speaker 1: into YouTube or on your phone, you'll get a notification
- 2:38Speaker 1: to say, yo, Vegas just dropped a new video. You
- 2:42Speaker 1: can check it out right then, and now you can
- 2:44Speaker 1: check it out when you have time. I'm gonna tell
- 2:46Speaker 1: you right now. I watch YouTube like television, and the
- 2:49Speaker 1: watch later the save thing. I do it for like
- 2:54Speaker 1: all the channels I subscribe. I just go through content
- 2:57Speaker 1: each day that I like and hit watch later, and
- 3:00Speaker 1: then when I'm in a gym or something else, or
- 3:03Speaker 1: at home. I'm just watching YouTube, like again, like television,
- 3:07Speaker 1: So do me that salad real quick. Just want to
- 3:12Speaker 1: shout out something I did this week. I was a
- 3:15Speaker 1: contributor in an article in The New York Times about
- 3:20Speaker 1: Roy Hargrove. If you don't know who that is, he's
- 3:23Speaker 1: a jazz musician, legendary musician if you ask me, you
- 3:27Speaker 1: know who unfortunately passed away a couple of years back.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But his imprint on the game of jazz, and not
- 3:35Speaker 1: just jazz but music in general has been felt across
- 3:40Speaker 1: hip hop, soul, R and B, jazz, all of it
- 3:43Speaker 1: all together. But I contributed to the article. It's called
- 3:49Speaker 1: five minutes to Make You Love Roy Hargrove, So definitely
- 3:53Speaker 1: check that out. It's a lot of other people there
- 3:55Speaker 1: who have some dope songs, and I, you know, told
- 3:59Speaker 1: them one of the songs, one song that I liked
- 4:03Speaker 1: from him. But there are a ton there to you know.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Once you read the article, you kind of get to
- 4:09Speaker 1: know who Roy Hargrove is and then go down the
- 4:12Speaker 1: rabbit hole of his performances, his albums, you know, his
- 4:17Speaker 1: documentary which I was able to see a couple of
- 4:20Speaker 1: years back in Manhattan. So it's pretty dope. So if
- 4:26Speaker 1: you want to check that out, if you want to read,
- 4:28Speaker 1: you want to read what I wrote. Also, the link
- 4:31Speaker 1: will be in the description of this episode, whether you're
- 4:35Speaker 1: listening in audio form or watching it as a video.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And big shout out to Marcus J. Moore, who I
- 4:43Speaker 1: interviewed on this channel when he dropped his book about Daylight.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So I know there was a little controversy, but they
- 4:49Speaker 1: had to be quiet after a while because it wasn't
- 4:53Speaker 1: what they were saying. I'm just saying it's real. But
- 4:57Speaker 1: I did an interview with him. This was his article
- 5:00Speaker 1: he asked me to contribute. I was honored to do so.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I've written before, but now I could say I've had
- 5:08Speaker 1: two hundred words in the New York Times, so boom.
- 5:15Speaker 1: But with that being said, big shout out to Hip
- 5:18Speaker 1: HOPDX dot com, All hip Hop dot Com, Double xt
- 5:23Speaker 1: Cel mag and a couple of places where I'm getting
- 5:25Speaker 1: some of these stories from Let's Get Ready to the
- 5:27Speaker 1: Business Show. Kendrick and Drake fans have been doing battle
- 5:35Speaker 1: still mostly Drake fans because they want to say see
- 5:39Speaker 1: he's not, see he is, and it's like he lost.
- 5:43Speaker 1: He lost, Okay, stop, he lost even him? What did
- 5:48Speaker 1: I miss? You missed a whole battle where Kendrick drug
- 5:53Speaker 1: you up and down the damn street for all of
- 5:56Speaker 1: us to see. And it lasted like two years, which
- 6:00Speaker 1: is crazy. Maybe it hasn't been two years, but damn sure.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Last of the year. I'm hoping Drake will stop bringing
- 6:06Speaker 1: it up. But unfortunately we're not done yet, right, We're not.
- 6:12Speaker 1: The MTV Video Music Awards is coming up. Yeah, I know,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I don't really watch awards shows, but I do like
- 6:20Speaker 1: to follow the nominations for hip hop well in general,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and you know who wins, you know some When it
- 6:28Speaker 1: comes to videos, I don't watch as much as I
- 6:31Speaker 1: used to back in the days. Like back in the days,
- 6:34Speaker 1: shout out to Ralph McDaniels and the Big Kid Rest
- 6:39Speaker 1: in peace, Rest in peace. The other dude too. I
- 6:43Speaker 1: can't remember his name, Ray he passed away recently. I
- 6:46Speaker 1: think his name was Ray a bad y'all. But that's
- 6:50Speaker 1: how I initially used to get my videos like Homegrown
- 6:55Speaker 1: New York Video Music Box, but obviously BT and MTV,
- 7:03Speaker 1: And then after a while I just stopped because videos
- 7:06Speaker 1: stopped being creative hip hop videos stop being creative to me,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and it just was all the same thing after a while, cars, chicks,
- 7:16Speaker 1: flashing lights, jewelry, you know, somebody grill being shown close
- 7:21Speaker 1: up in a pan and shot like, come on, man,
- 7:23Speaker 1: I'm tired. You know. Now, I will say that might
- 7:29Speaker 1: not That's not really the case now because there are
- 7:31Speaker 1: a few artists. There are a couple of artists who
- 7:33Speaker 1: make some really dope, fantastic videos, you know, all the time.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Drake makes some dope videos sometimes, you know what I'm saying,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Like the Hotline Bling video. It was simple, but it
- 7:43Speaker 1: was kind of dope the way it was done. It
- 7:45Speaker 1: was different. The Baby has a lot of dope videos.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I don't know about now, but I know when he
- 7:51Speaker 1: was hot hot he had that album Baby on Baby,
- 7:55Speaker 1: which is probably the only one I really like. All
- 7:58Speaker 1: his videos were entertaining. Took me back, you know. But
- 8:04Speaker 1: now I don't watch, man, I don't watch because half
- 8:07Speaker 1: the time I don't care unless I'm interested in seeing,
- 8:11Speaker 1: like maybe I like the song like not like Us
- 8:15Speaker 1: and I want to see the video, or like I
- 8:18Speaker 1: like the Nokia joint. I'm sorry. I know we're supposed
- 8:20Speaker 1: to hate Drake, but I like it, okay, and I
- 8:24Speaker 1: know he didn't really write I don't care man like
- 8:27Speaker 1: it's about a groove. Trust me. When it comes to
- 8:29Speaker 1: hip hop, him suing takes him out of it. I
- 8:33Speaker 1: don't care what he does. I don't care what he raps.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Suing over a battle is the weakest thing that's ever
- 8:39Speaker 1: happened in hip hop. Your hip hop carters have been revoked. Okay,
- 8:46Speaker 1: But the VMA's is coming up, and I'm trying to
- 8:49Speaker 1: see if I could find I guess not the nomination.
- 8:54Speaker 1: So I'm just gonna read a little bit. This is
- 8:56Speaker 1: over at hip hopdx dot com. Kendrick Lamar and Drake
- 9:00Speaker 1: set to go head to head at the MTV VMA's
- 9:05Speaker 1: Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Oh I just read that. While
- 9:09Speaker 1: they said Kendrick Lamar and Drake are set to go
- 9:12Speaker 1: head to head in a key category at the MTV
- 9:16Speaker 1: VMA Awards. Okay, what's that? The nominations for the awards
- 9:21Speaker 1: were announced, with Kendrick up for ten different wow, while
- 9:28Speaker 1: Drake has just one nomination. Damn, it has to be
- 9:37Speaker 1: no kid with some sexy songs for you almost entirely
- 9:43Speaker 1: shut out at the Awards. Well, we know who's gonna
- 9:47Speaker 1: win now. Drake and Kendrick will only do battle in
- 9:51Speaker 1: the category of Best Hip Hop. Kendrick is nominated for
- 9:54Speaker 1: Not Like Us, while Drake is up for Nokia. Let's see,
- 10:00Speaker 1: is anything else here worth reading that's not just stuff
- 10:03Speaker 1: the Yeah? So holo, holdo, there's something else so I believe. Also,
- 10:16Speaker 1: LLL qu J and Eminem are up for that same category.
- 10:24Speaker 1: For the song it was Murder Graham two or something
- 10:27Speaker 1: like that. That video was dope. I didn't like that
- 10:31Speaker 1: song when I first heard it, and when I saw
- 10:34Speaker 1: the video, I was like, Okay, the video just made
- 10:37Speaker 1: me like the song. So I think Not Like Us
- 10:42Speaker 1: it's going to win because it was just it was
- 10:46Speaker 1: like when the song dropped, perfect time in perfect video,
- 10:51Speaker 1: just perfect. Nokia is cool, but it's it's worth the nomination.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Put it that way. It's worth the nomination. But if
- 11:06Speaker 1: Not Like Us doesn't win, Murder Graham is the only
- 11:10Speaker 1: other video to me that was really good, like very like,
- 11:16Speaker 1: very creative. You know those three to me unless there's
- 11:22Speaker 1: another video I'm forgetting about and trust me, is not
- 11:25Speaker 1: any of you Boom back chains and finger gun at
- 11:30Speaker 1: the camera dudes, like we've seen y'all do that a
- 11:34Speaker 1: million times. Step your budget up. Okay, we on the block. Okay, congratulations, congratulations,
- 11:40Speaker 1: you grew up there. I'm saying these these three videos
- 11:45Speaker 1: I'm talking about, there's a little bit more creativity to them.
- 11:47Speaker 1: So I could see any one of them win it, well,
- 11:51Speaker 1: any one of the two winning. But I think it's
- 11:53Speaker 1: going to be not like us. I thought I had
- 11:55Speaker 1: a list of complete nominations here, but I guess that's
- 11:59Speaker 1: the main one that met for hip hop So next,
- 12:06Speaker 1: So Salt and Pepper have been going through it with
- 12:10Speaker 1: U and G. You and G got a lot of
- 12:11Speaker 1: smoke in the streets. First, you got this freaky. First
- 12:15Speaker 1: you got Drake suing UMG or trying to sue them
- 12:20Speaker 1: over now like us, which is nonsense. But Salt and
- 12:25Speaker 1: Pepper suing over their master recordings is another thing. To me,
- 12:30Speaker 1: that's a bigger thing, that's more important. This is also
- 12:33Speaker 1: from Hip Hop d X. I thought I turned that off.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Hold on, hold on, y'all, you know you gotta. My
- 12:41Speaker 1: sister calls it D and D. I just say, do
- 12:45Speaker 1: not disturb. Just put your do not disturb on, Okay, am,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I old because I don't say D and D I
- 12:50Speaker 1: don't know. You tell me barms. Salt and Pepper, slam
- 12:55Speaker 1: U and G as the pioneering wrap duo, sue the
- 12:58Speaker 1: record label for control over their master recordings. The female
- 13:04Speaker 1: MC's filed a lawsuit against the music Giant back in May,
- 13:08Speaker 1: in which they alleged UMG is violating federal copyright law
- 13:12Speaker 1: by denying them the copyright to their music after a
- 13:16Speaker 1: certain after a certain amount of time has elapsed. Oh
- 13:21Speaker 1: that's interesting. Let's see. This is what Salt said, and
- 13:26Speaker 1: I quote this is from Good Morning America. By the way,
- 13:31Speaker 1: when you're an artist in the beginning, you sign a
- 13:33Speaker 1: contract saying that the copyrights will revert back to you
- 13:37Speaker 1: after thirty five years. And we've done all the things
- 13:40Speaker 1: legally to get our copyrights back, but they're just refusing.
- 13:45Speaker 1: So we had to sue them. We didn't have that leverage,
- 13:50Speaker 1: we didn't have the knowledge, we didn't have that control
- 13:54Speaker 1: in the eighties, and so to be held to be
- 13:58Speaker 1: held to a contract from nineteen eighty five and forty
- 14:01Speaker 1: years later, it's like ridiculous. And this is what Pepper said.
- 14:06Speaker 1: They want to keep it. They want to hold on
- 14:08Speaker 1: to it, and they're trying to fight us, so obviously
- 14:12Speaker 1: they understand that's the worth of that. Okay, you can
- 14:18Speaker 1: read the rest on hip Hop dx dot com. But
- 14:24Speaker 1: we say it all the time. We've been saying it
- 14:26Speaker 1: since Q Tip of a Triical Quest said it back
- 14:29Speaker 1: in the days. Record company people are shady. They just are.
- 14:38Speaker 1: They're sharks. Not everybody, not everybody, but generally speaking, especially
- 14:46Speaker 1: when it comes to ownership and publishing and points and
- 14:51Speaker 1: things like that, it's almost designed to take advantage of
- 14:58Speaker 1: the artists. These two women are lucky to still be
- 15:02Speaker 1: walking the face of the earth. Five years ago. They
- 15:07Speaker 1: should have received I'm not saying I'm a lawyer, but
- 15:11Speaker 1: I'm just I'm gonna trust Salt and Pepper. Trust them.
- 15:16Speaker 1: They should have received their masters their copyright back. And
- 15:21Speaker 1: we know it's valuable because if you were around in
- 15:25Speaker 1: the nineties, like well, even in the eighties, right in
- 15:28Speaker 1: the eighties, Salt and Pepper was a popular hip hop group.
- 15:32Speaker 1: But in the nineties they became and this is not
- 15:35Speaker 1: even a shot at them as female MC's. We already
- 15:39Speaker 1: know Salt Pepper top ten when it comes to the ladies,
- 15:43Speaker 1: but in the nineties they blew up, it became more
- 15:46Speaker 1: of a pop group. You know, they still made hip hop,
- 15:50Speaker 1: but they were extremely popular beyond just being popular with
- 15:57Speaker 1: hip hop. So there are songs of theirs that you know,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I mean, you still see them in commercials like Shoot
- 16:06Speaker 1: and what a Man Like? Those songs just don't get old.
- 16:10Speaker 1: And unfortunately, like they said, a lot of artists do this.
- 16:15Speaker 1: They want to be on they see the pathway, they
- 16:19Speaker 1: get the budget to do some of the things they
- 16:21Speaker 1: want to do, but they don't have the ownership and
- 16:25Speaker 1: of their music that they create. And when you have
- 16:28Speaker 1: a situation when you have hits on a hip hop
- 16:32Speaker 1: level with the heads, and then you go on to
- 16:36Speaker 1: have pop hits, you know what I'm saying that never
- 16:40Speaker 1: get old that have impacted generations of people in different communities.
- 16:48Speaker 1: So when they hear it, it's their jam, no matter
- 16:51Speaker 1: how old they get. That's this money to be made
- 16:56Speaker 1: and they created this. So what do you think do
- 17:01Speaker 1: you think that artists today should just straight go for
- 17:07Speaker 1: independence by any means necessary. You know, last week we
- 17:12Speaker 1: talked about Joey Badass and his issue. He wanted to
- 17:15Speaker 1: drop an album last week and the record label saying
- 17:19Speaker 1: I think it was def Jam was like no, no,
- 17:21Speaker 1: no death Jam U and G saying I was like no, no, no,
- 17:25Speaker 1: you don't. You know you want to control your stuff.
- 17:31Speaker 1: You know you signed a deal. In Salt and Pepper's case,
- 17:35Speaker 1: they were very patient. They waited. Now it was time
- 17:38Speaker 1: for these ladies to have their copyright. Man, it just sucks.
- 17:41Speaker 1: So leave your comments in the comments section below about
- 17:44Speaker 1: that and the Video Music Awards, whether you think Kendrick's
- 17:51Speaker 1: gonna win Drake or maybe L L and M and
- 17:54Speaker 1: M and last so man, Like, I'm gonna just say this,
- 18:03Speaker 1: if you're a hip hop fan, we been eating good.
- 18:08Speaker 1: We have been eating good. Okay, if you don't know,
- 18:14Speaker 1: maybe a little bit more casual. If you don't know
- 18:17Speaker 1: what I'm referencing, maybe you're just a little bit more casual.
- 18:20Speaker 1: And there's nothing wrong with that. That is the point
- 18:22Speaker 1: of this show to introduce you, if you don't know,
- 18:27Speaker 1: into I mean, introduce you to artists and music and
- 18:31Speaker 1: concepts and stuff, but hip hop and hip hop culture.
- 18:35Speaker 1: And lately it feels like even though I had a
- 18:39Speaker 1: couple of dope albums in my best of the year
- 18:41Speaker 1: so far, lately we've been getting a streak of dope albums,
- 18:48Speaker 1: a couple of does, a couple of bumps in the
- 18:50Speaker 1: row were like, oh whoa, what was that? You know,
- 18:53Speaker 1: Slick break Out. I'm just joking. Come on, man, I
- 18:57Speaker 1: love Slick Ray, you know what I mean. Like, ever
- 19:01Speaker 1: since the Clips dropped and again we did a whole
- 19:08Speaker 1: show on this. Just check out the video Me and
- 19:11Speaker 1: the homie Ox shout out to about that album. But
- 19:15Speaker 1: it just represented the death of agism, even though Nas
- 19:21Speaker 1: kind of did that and he said it on the
- 19:23Speaker 1: Clips album. But the Clips l l like a couple
- 19:29Speaker 1: of a couple of people releasing dope stuff, Common and
- 19:33Speaker 1: Pete Rock right, Like, this just feels like this extension
- 19:37Speaker 1: of don't Sleep on the Old Heads. So when the
- 19:41Speaker 1: Clips dropped and the bars were pristine, the features were pristine,
- 19:47Speaker 1: Pharrell was in his pocket in his bag with that album,
- 19:53Speaker 1: it was almost like, man, it can't get no better
- 19:55Speaker 1: than this. And then Ray Kwan dropped and at first
- 19:59Speaker 1: I was kind of like, because I did a review,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I gave it my listens and I was like, yeah,
- 20:07Speaker 1: it's cool, you know it's cool. I went beyond those
- 20:11Speaker 1: three listens I like to do and found myself like
- 20:16Speaker 1: back to back clips ray Kwon, ray Quon clips clips
- 20:19Speaker 1: ray Kuon like just like that, and you know, it
- 20:25Speaker 1: just feels like there's there's something going on. With that
- 20:31Speaker 1: being said, I listened to the brand new album from Jid.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I believe his grandmother used to call him Jed a bug.
- 20:42Speaker 1: That's how you pronounce it Jid, but sometimes I saw
- 20:44Speaker 1: it as Ji d early On at least, but jig right,
- 20:50Speaker 1: That's what I'm going with. Okay released a brand new
- 20:54Speaker 1: album called God Does Like Ugly. It's about an hour
- 20:59Speaker 1: in length fifteen songs. Features include the clips on, a
- 21:06Speaker 1: song called Community, Nce Staples or a song called VCR
- 21:11Speaker 1: Skate feature in Sierra and Earth Gang Don Tolliver. What's
- 21:18Speaker 1: this guy's name? I always miss his name up? It
- 21:21Speaker 1: said six black or slack. Is that what it is?
- 21:24Speaker 1: I guess so tdd Dallas Sign and a couple of
- 21:29Speaker 1: other people in here. Past de Troy is on here.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I didn't even realize past that was Past de Troy, right,
- 21:36Speaker 1: So you know I do when it comes to these reviews.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Three listens. First listen is just to take in whatever
- 21:47Speaker 1: this album is presenting just listening. Second listen, it's more
- 21:52Speaker 1: so to like, all right, let's listen to these bars
- 21:54Speaker 1: and these features and these beats and concept and look
- 21:58Speaker 1: at the cover and if I could see what's being
- 22:01Speaker 1: presented within music. And the third listen is just to
- 22:05Speaker 1: confirm my thoughts and my thoughts for those who like,
- 22:10Speaker 1: I don't want you to explaining stuff what you think
- 22:14Speaker 1: that's one of the best of the year. It is.
- 22:18Speaker 1: It is one of the best of the year, and
- 22:20Speaker 1: it is probably gonna be in my top five at
- 22:24Speaker 1: least for now so far. Best of the year so far,
- 22:28Speaker 1: top five so far. A couple of things can drop
- 22:31Speaker 1: and just bounce it right out of there for me,
- 22:33Speaker 1: But right now, right now, it's right in there, and
- 22:39Speaker 1: I and what I like about it. It's not that
- 22:43Speaker 1: first of all, this dude could rap. He always could
- 22:46Speaker 1: rapt okay since the beginning, But this feels like he
- 22:51Speaker 1: found his pocket. Like this if this is what my
- 22:56Speaker 1: albums or this is what his album should sound like
- 22:59Speaker 1: going forward, not the same exact concept, but I think
- 23:03Speaker 1: he does a great balance of having bars, spit a
- 23:07Speaker 1: tight beats and records and features, you know, stuff that
- 23:13Speaker 1: you could dance to. Music that represents where he comes from,
- 23:18Speaker 1: right because I know at like for some people. Also,
- 23:23Speaker 1: Westside Gunn is on his album, but he's talking for
- 23:26Speaker 1: the most part. But I know for some people with
- 23:29Speaker 1: this album in particular, somewhere in the midway point, the
- 23:37Speaker 1: music in the vibe switches up, right, not on every song,
- 23:42Speaker 1: but it becomes very different than what you heard within
- 23:46Speaker 1: the last you know, four or five records, right, And
- 23:51Speaker 1: I know a lot of people pointed that out. And
- 23:53Speaker 1: I'm not even saying in a negative way, but for
- 23:55Speaker 1: some people, that's kind of like going off track, Like
- 23:59Speaker 1: oh man, yo, when it started, it was crazy, but
- 24:02Speaker 1: then you start doing this and that third I'll say this,
- 24:06Speaker 1: I don't care, you know why, because I didn't had
- 24:10Speaker 1: years of listening to outcasts, had banjos and harmonicas and
- 24:15Speaker 1: people beating on buckets and all kinds of other sounds
- 24:20Speaker 1: for hip hop, and I dug it because it was
- 24:24Speaker 1: coming from a from their culture in Atlanta. Right. It
- 24:29Speaker 1: may not be the signature sound or whatever the signature
- 24:32Speaker 1: sound is today, but it had the influences. Right. Just
- 24:38Speaker 1: like when you think of New York City and you
- 24:39Speaker 1: think of Boom Bap, it's almost like the boom Bap
- 24:42Speaker 1: is representative of it being so much concrete everywhere. You
- 24:46Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, so it made sense for those
- 24:51Speaker 1: who don't know. He's on j Cole's label Dreamville. I
- 24:56Speaker 1: will say this, production wise, this is great. I think
- 25:01Speaker 1: that's what I like about it. It's carrying the torch
- 25:06Speaker 1: from Clips right with that quality of the music right,
- 25:13Speaker 1: not the same exact production, but just attention to detail
- 25:17Speaker 1: when it came to the music alone, and then Jid
- 25:22Speaker 1: just showed up when it came to the bars. Now
- 25:27Speaker 1: I know, I said Clips, and that's all people care
- 25:29Speaker 1: about nowadays. Right. It's kind of like when Black Thought
- 25:33Speaker 1: did the freestyle and y'all realized that he existed because
- 25:37Speaker 1: some of y'all wasn't even talking about Black Thought and
- 25:39Speaker 1: he been spitting like that same thing with Clips. People
- 25:43Speaker 1: love the Clips so much now it's like if it's
- 25:45Speaker 1: a CLIPS features like where where, Well, I'll say this,
- 25:49Speaker 1: the song is crazy. It's called community. Jid got busy,
- 25:55Speaker 1: obviously pushing te got busy, but malice if he dropped
- 26:03Speaker 1: more like if they're on a NAS album and he
- 26:05Speaker 1: got another verse, that's crazy. He is not only the
- 26:11Speaker 1: sixth Man of the Year, the comeback man of the Year,
- 26:15Speaker 1: not the six Man. But you know what I mean,
- 26:17Speaker 1: the comeback Player of the Year, the MVP ain't even
- 26:23Speaker 1: won championship with his brother because that album is definitely
- 26:26Speaker 1: in my top five for the year, and it's not moving.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I don't care what come out. I don't care if
- 26:32Speaker 1: they'd be like, oh, big Pocket, they had a secret album.
- 26:35Speaker 1: It's crazy. I'm not moving the clips because it was
- 26:39Speaker 1: that good. But Malice verse on Hire is nuts. He
- 26:46Speaker 1: hasn't missed. He has not missed. You know what It's like,
- 26:55Speaker 1: Dudes are fighting outside. Let's just say, push the t
- 26:58Speaker 1: outside fighting and he outnumbered, and Malon's been in the
- 27:02Speaker 1: house all day watching cartoons and eating cereal, and he just, oh,
- 27:07Speaker 1: who fight my brother? And he just get up off
- 27:09Speaker 1: the couch, go outside, knock out the dudes, and go
- 27:11Speaker 1: right back to watching cartoons and eating Syria. That's how
- 27:16Speaker 1: he acting. He's just coming outside saying, here I go.
- 27:25Speaker 1: But nevertheless, man like again, the only thing that was
- 27:29Speaker 1: weird for me was the It's weird because I like it,
- 27:33Speaker 1: but it's also weird because like what we're doing. The
- 27:37Speaker 1: opening track you Ugly Right featuring Westside Gun. Westside Gun
- 27:43Speaker 1: is talking and he like yo, my lady ugly and
- 27:46Speaker 1: it's just like why are you here? Because there was
- 27:52Speaker 1: a better use for his voice, Like I kind of
- 27:56Speaker 1: wanted to you know, I'm looking at Canary's. I don't
- 28:01Speaker 1: know why I said that, but that's how he rhyn.
- 28:03Speaker 1: I just wanted to hear that. So the talking was
- 28:06Speaker 1: kind of like, oh, oh okay. But again, it doesn't
- 28:12Speaker 1: take away from this album. This album is an hour, right,
- 28:16Speaker 1: some people look at the track listing. You might be
- 28:19Speaker 1: like me and be like, dmn, it's you haven't but
- 28:28Speaker 1: it's only an hour and it sounds good. So now
- 28:32Speaker 1: I you know again, I'm about to be in the space.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I know Alfredo two dropped also, but there's a certain
- 28:40Speaker 1: energy level that Alfredo two, Rock Marcie and Premier don't have.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Like you can listen to those two albums together and
- 28:53Speaker 1: kind of vibe with that because it's more chill, mellow.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Even though I like the rock Marsy and Primo joint,
- 29:02Speaker 1: but this feels like a companion piece to the Clips album, right.
- 29:07Speaker 1: It feels like an extension of that quality, you know
- 29:11Speaker 1: when it comes to the bars and the beats. And
- 29:14Speaker 1: again same thing with Ray Kwan Man. I like that album,
- 29:17Speaker 1: so definitely Jigs God does like Ugly. It's one of
- 29:25Speaker 1: the best of the year. Man, have you heard it?
- 29:28Speaker 1: What do you think you like it? Do you like
- 29:31Speaker 1: to switch up like towards the second half of the album?
- 29:34Speaker 1: Do you like the final record that really kind of
- 29:37Speaker 1: brings everything together? Leave your comments in a comments section below.
