- 1:19than I want right then, and I don't have to worry about pouring it
- 1:23down the drain because that's just wine abuse and that's just wrong. The single

- 2:47We've been on lockdown quarantine for a couple of weeks now, homeschooling the
- 2:53granddaughter and trying to work a full time job. It's a tad bit much
- 2:58so before we get started today, wanted to take a moment to tell all
- 3:01of you be kind. The world's crazy right now and we need to remember
- 3:07that everyone is struggling out there, and there is light at the end of
- 3:12the tunnel. If things get a little too hectic, take a walk outside,
- 3:16take a few deep breaths, grab a glass of wine, just remember
- 3:23be kind. Today I explore the case of a gruesome murder of one of
- 3:28the most popular TV cinema actresses of the Philippines, Nita Blanca. I don't
- 3:35deny my fascination for murder. The more shockingly outrageous it is, the more
- 3:40the attraction to it, and of course my natural inclination for solving the mystery.
- 3:47So come along with me as I lead you into the dark and sinister
- 3:53case of this unsolved murder. For today's episode, I am enjoying a nice
- 4:00Brute from Usual Wines. This Brute is a dry and effervescent, sparkling wine
- 4:06with notes of lemon, olderberry, and bergamot. It is light and refreshing,
- 4:13with bubbles that make me say yes please. Expertly made in small batches
- 4:20from sustainable farmed grapes with no additives, in minimal intervention the real way.
- 4:29Let me get this opened and poured. There we go. Oh look at
- 4:40those bubbles. Ah, this smells heavenly. My rose may have a stiff
- 4:51competition for my new favorite. This is really good. It's very nice and
- 4:59refreshing. This episode contains graphic content and may not be suitable for all listeners.
- 5:06Popular Philippine actress Nita Blanca was stabbed at at and a parking lot.
- 5:13Philippine newspaper headlines heralded and this sparked a national outrage as Filipinos all over the
- 5:20world were shocked. They cried out for justice. When the hue and cry
- 5:27had died down, tearful fans proclaimed that it was her husband who did it,
- 5:34just like here in the United States, the husband her boyfriend did it.
- 5:40The gruesome murder of Filipina actress Nita Blanca is still shrouded in mystery and
- 5:45speculation twenty years after her murder. Born Dorothy Jones from a Filipino mother,
- 5:53a niece Sinshaw a Kuzza, and a father who is an American soldier named
- 6:00John on January sixth, nineteen thirty six, in Guypond, she assumed the
- 6:04scream name Nita Blanca when she embarked on a career to be a movie star.
- 6:11At the age of fourteen, she made her first film appearance under the
- 6:15sponsorship of a former movie Queen Delia Razon. Delia also convinced the owner Elvian
- 6:23Pictures, Dona Si Sang Delion, to make Nita a movie star. Since
- 6:30Nita was half American sporting a comely appearance and fair skin, Dona Si Sang
- 6:36appended Blanca as Nita screen surname. Blanca is a Spanish word for white.
- 6:46Thus begin her career in show business in the nineteen fifties, she was teamed
- 6:50up with popular actors like Nestor de Villa as one of her leading men.
- 6:57The crowd loved her guys. Her movies were a big hit. When she
- 7:04partnered with comedy king Dolphy in the popular TV series John and Marcia, Nita
- 7:12became a household name as Filipinos of all ages fell in love with her and
- 7:18her role as Marcia opposite Dolphy's role as John. It was an ideal and
- 7:27funny team up that lasted for seventeen years, garnering much publicity and accolade for
- 7:34the casts of the sitcom, I mean guys. Seventeen years. That is
- 7:41a long time for a sitcom. Nita made more than two hundred movies in
- 7:46her six decades in showbiz. Now let's take a toast to life. Drink
- 7:51to success, because I need a drink to commemorate this joyous occasion. I
- 7:58mean, two hundred of these seventeen year sitcom that is true success. Cheers
- 8:05Nita. Let's delve into her personal life. I know for a fact that
- 8:11Nita is a paragon of cinema success. So it's curiosity that makes me dig
- 8:18deeper into her personal life. Personal life sometimes is stranger than fiction and more
- 8:26interesting. So let's see. Nita was first married to Victorino Torrez, with
- 8:31whom she had a daughter, Katherine Kay Torres. However, their marriage did
- 8:39not last long, and the two were separated when Kay just turned two years
- 8:45old. Nita then met Rod Lauren Strunk, an American actor and singer,
- 8:52and in nineteen seventy nine they got married. Many friends have attested that Nita's
- 8:58married life to Rod with considered normal in the sense that just like any married
- 9:03couple, just like Handsome Hobby and I, that they had ups and downs
- 9:09throughout life, but that they were weathering it together and stayed married for ten
- 9:16years. They dutifully attended and even enjoyed parties together. One such party was
- 9:24a free for all dance affair held at a five star hotel Hotel inter cons
- 9:30Baiha to commemorate the birthdays of a mother and a son who are in the
- 9:35entertainment industry. Nita was said to have been the star of the dance party,
- 9:41being a popular dancer. Guys, I think she was just a star.
- 9:46Rod enjoyed the party as well, considering he was close friends with one
- 9:50of the celebrants at the party. Another party was a Frank Sinatra sing along
- 9:56that was also for a joint birthday. Guys, just you know, birthdays
- 10:00are a big deal on the Philippines and here in my household, they're a
- 10:05big deal. Both Nita and Rod were there two At the Frank Sinatra sing
- 10:09along party. The couple seemed happy and not once did anyone suspect that something
- 10:18was wrong in their marriage. They thought they were a happy couple. Nita
- 10:22was also seen to have been wrapping up a take home dish for Rod at
- 10:26the end of a cinema review held by the Movie and Television Review and Classification
- 10:33Board a November fourth, three days before Nita was killed, A dance arama
- 10:39party was held where both Nita and Rod attended. Guys, I've never been
- 10:46to a dance arama party that count me in. I think we need to
- 10:50have one with this quarantine. If it keeps going, we might need to
- 10:54set up a zoom dance rama wine party. Send me a message, send
- 11:01me an email, let me know if you want to jump in on that.
- 11:03I think it sounds fun now. Nito is seen to have been rushing
- 11:09to Rod's side after each ballroom dance and exclaimed in a loud voice that her
- 11:16husband must be feeling lonely without anyone to talk to. Of course, friends.
- 11:22This was quoted in a local magazine and in the Filipino language. So
- 11:28I cannot express this to you verbatim as you've heard during this episode my Texas
- 11:35accent. I'm not quite so good at pronouncing Spanish names, Filipino names.
- 11:41In fact, for my Filipino interns and Filipino friends, they always give me
- 11:48all hard time when I try to speak some words like salamat okay, Danielle,
- 11:56that one is for you, So strength to that. Terry cannot pronounce
- 12:03words and names. So after the gruesome murder of Nita, the Philippine National
- 12:11Police created a body called Task force Marcia and announced to the public that Nita
- 12:20was a battered wife. Majority of the public believe this, but some personalities
- 12:26close to the couple did not. One of them was the veteran radio announcer
- 12:31the late End Day Body Day, who said that if Nita was a victim
- 12:37of abuse by her husband, her friends would have noticed or known about it,
- 12:41and would have commented about it long before their murderer happened. Such things
- 12:46couldn't be kept hidden from the public for long. While, Guys, I
- 12:52disagree with that. I know some people who've been victims of abuse in no
- 12:58way knew people are very good at hiding things. Sorry, I'm getting ahead
- 13:05of myself. I just wanted to point out the fact that views about Nita's
- 13:09marriage to Rod apparently was normal in the sense that no battered wife or third
- 13:15party scandal ever marred their union during their years of married life. Or as
- 13:22I said, was it all kept under rips? Was it secrets? Now,
- 13:26let's get down to the murder and the mystery that surrounds this case.
- 13:30A November seventh, two thousand and one, Nita Blanco was found stabbed to
- 13:35death in a condominium parking lot in San Juan City, Manila. She was
- 13:39sixty five years old. That is tragic, guys. Further investigations revealed that
- 13:46she was beaten and then stabbed thirteen times in the backseat of her car in
- 13:54the condominium where she worked for the MTRCB attending screenings movie ratings twice a week.
- 14:03The fatal blow was the stab on her neck that pierced the larrnix.
- 14:09She also suffered the hematoma in her right eye. Guys. That's a big
- 14:13scientific word here. That means a pulling of blood in the area that results
- 14:18and those purpless discoloration of the skin and is probably caused by that heavy beating.
- 14:26And she had two broken ribs, now, guys, she's Can you
- 14:31imagine that I've had broken ribs and I wasn't beaten. I can't imagine being
- 14:39beaten and having broken ribs. I just hope that she died very quickly.
- 14:45This now seemed like a classic case of who'd done it, and among the
- 14:50primary suspects was, of course, her husband. This controversy ushered in an
- 14:56assortment of theories as to who killed her and most importantly why. In the
- 15:03January February two thousand and two issue, of Yes Magazine, a special report
- 15:09was written titled A Murder Mystery Nita Blanca. Now, friends, I want
- 15:16to analyze each theory and see if this shed some light on this case,
- 15:22because remember this case is still unsolved, and because if some things were about
- 15:28to find out, it may never be solved. The first theory is Rod
- 15:35Strunk, mastermind or fall guide. According to a special report, Nita's husband,
- 15:43Rod was so upset with his wife because she wrote him out of her
- 15:48will. Investigators found that Blanca had up to eighty five million Philippine pesos and
- 15:54properties that's roughly one point seven million dollars, including a green Hill San Juan
- 16:03condominium worth ten million Philippine pesos and a house in California were three hundred thousand
- 16:11dollars. If Nita had annulled her marriage, Rod would get nothing. Guy's
- 16:18one thing I have to say here. I guess things are different over in
- 16:22the Philippines, and you can get your marriage annulled after ten years. In
- 16:26the States, that would be called a divorce, and as we know,
- 16:30people murder instead of getting a divorce. Sometimes. If Nita died before she
- 16:37was able to terminate her marriage under the law, Rod being the legal spouse,
- 16:42would be entitled to a portion of his estranged wife's inheritance, even though
- 16:49her will stated that everything was to go to her daughter Yep, Nita left
- 16:56all of her property and everything to her daughter Kay. The theory went to
- 17:00say that when Rod failed to persuade Nita to produce the will, the husband
- 17:06hired a professional killer. Also said that they had a shaky marriage and that
- 17:11Rod supposedly had an affair. Also went on to say that Nita was a
- 17:15battered wife, and as I mentioned earlier, this was a statement disposed by
- 17:22the P and P Task Force Task Force Marcia investigating the murder, of which
- 17:29many people believed, but as I also mentioned earlier, a lot of people
- 17:34did not believe this. A reporter was quoted as saying, I admit,
- 17:40after covering the story for how many days, that I am sympathetic Rod is
- 17:45a fall guy. The reporter even ventured to analyze Rod's personality is that of
- 17:52being of small mind, meaning a person without too much ambition and someone who
- 17:59is easy to please. The reporter added that he is not capable of masterminding
- 18:04something as grand as this. Well, glad to know that that reporter has
- 18:08a degree in psychology, police background, you know, just saying in the
- 18:15second theory. Exactly thirteen days after Nita's death, Task Force Marshall organized a
- 18:22press conference and a man dressed in all black by the name of Philip Madell
- 18:30appeared at the conference and declared publicly that he was the killer. Betch didn't
- 18:36see that one coming. He said that he was a professional killer, hired
- 18:41by a middleman by the name of Mike Martinez and was paid fifty thousand Philippine
- 18:48pesos to do the job. Philip Medell explained that he didn't know his target
- 18:53was a veteran actress and that his conscience could not bear it when he found
- 18:59out that the woman he killed was Nita. But after four days he took
- 19:03back what he said. He revealed at the Department of Justice that he was
- 19:07forced to take the blame because he was allegedly tortured. Yeah, right,
- 19:12dude. He also said in his next interviews that the P and P had
- 19:17rubbed out the middleman, Martinez. However, Martinez's family announced that he was
- 19:23missing and that he had not been found according to the Yes Art, but
- 19:30Philippine Senator Penfilo Lascon found Madell's credibility questionable. Lasan's gut veal was supported by
- 19:40a TV reporter who covered the entertainment beat. This reporter was quoted by yes
- 19:45Is saying in taclogue, I don't trust Mendel. He said something in an
- 19:51interview with correspondence that really made an impact on me. He said, I'm
- 19:56here to mislead, and that's precisely what he is doing the way I see
- 20:02it. Let's up with these reporters over in the Philippines. They act like
- 20:06they're experts on this stuff. Maybe they are. Sorry, any reporters,
- 20:11if I'm throwing you under the bus, just say it. Well, we
- 20:14have two theories. Now, we have conflicting theories on this case. I'm
- 20:18saying it's time for a sip of wine because it's perfect time before we launch
- 20:26in to all the other theories of this case. Oh my goodness, that
- 20:32taste divine. Sorry, now I'm hitting the microphone. I think I just
- 20:37need to stop and drink some more of this now where wise, I let
- 20:41me get back on track here, Yes, the theories. The next theory
- 20:45I'm going to share with you makes things more complicated. It's called the money
- 20:52issue and there's a big question mark after that. And as we all know,
- 20:56money makes everything complicated. It's all about the money, as the saying
- 21:03goes, So let's dig into this money issue. A theory went on to
- 21:07say that Nita was involved with a big time politician. Nope, nothing sexual.
- 21:14It's more like, quote, a business arrangement sort of. The theory
- 21:18said that the politician entrusted Nita with a huge amount of money while this politician
- 21:26was busy with the pending case. The theory elaborated that Nita wanted to return
- 21:33the money to the politician, but that there had been greedy party stopping her
- 21:37from doing so, and since the politician was out of power. Another version
- 21:45of this theory said Nita no longer wanted to return the money, so the
- 21:49politicians people said that she had to be taught a lesson. Now, some
- 21:55question this theory, including Elena Dela Pa, Nita's longtime secretary. She was
- 22:02quoted as saying lately, Nita did not have any money. She even borrowed
- 22:07Rod's pension just recently. So can we see all the different conflicts here?
- 22:15After a previous statement from a reliable source that says Nita is well off financially
- 22:21with all of these properties and stuff, How can the statement of her secretary
- 22:26contradict this. Guys, I'm gonna say, go out on a loom here.
- 22:32Maybe she was real estate rich but cash flow poor. Something that happens.
- 22:38Assuming it happens in the Philippines, it happens everywhere in the world.
- 22:44Now. This fourth theory allegedly involved an underworld network of hitman and retired generals
- 22:52enforcing order at a certain casino. The fourth theory allegedly involved an underworld network
- 23:00of hitmen and retired generals enforcing order at a certain casino. The theory said
- 23:07that a group of people were running the money lending business at that casino.
- 23:12It went on to say that from a Philippine Paso two million capital, it
- 23:19grew to a Philippines Paso one hundred million capital, and that the point person
- 23:26in the group was a former movie star who lived in Forbes Park in the
- 23:30Philippines. According to this theory, the ex generals initially got into the casino
- 23:37business to launder their own money, but eventually became enforcers and at a certain
- 23:44point even debtors. Allegedly, there was a list of names who owe the
- 23:49Forbes part movie star money. The movie star supposedly became ill and she left
- 23:56the list with Nita, who was a longtime friend. Now, this guy's
- 24:02is significant because it shows Nita's a large connection to the casino that is guys
- 24:08in this theory, it is a theory, but there is another version of
- 24:14this story which states that Nita was not just a friend of the Forbes star,
- 24:18but was a partner and had money in this pot. And that's according
- 24:23to the Yes special report. The theory also said that when the Forbes part
- 24:29movie star died, Nita became the only person who knew who were on the
- 24:34list, and that compromised nita situation. However, many frown upon this theory
- 24:44because it gave Nita a bad name. You have to understand, friends,
- 24:49that Nita is a popular movie star well loved by the Filipino masses. Any
- 24:56scandal that would besmirch her name is frowned upon and actively rebuted by her fans.
- 25:04The report went on to say that those who knew Nita saw her as
- 25:08a lady who lived a simple life and that she did not go around like
- 25:14she was cradling a huge secret and wasn't always acting like she was looking over
- 25:19her shoulder. They argued that if she was indeed involved in a shady business,
- 25:27she could not have been so soft and easy and friendly. Me being
- 25:33the optimist, I am, I'd like to think this case should just resolve
- 25:37under pros and cons of these theories, and each statement should be analyzed carefully
- 25:44as to come to a plausible conclusion. But in life, as in the
- 25:49cinemas, nothing is as simple as it seems, and this case is no
- 25:56exception. And I am I'm going to tell you why. But first,
- 26:03since I keep hitting the mic, I'm going to have another drink. Okay,
- 26:07now, friends, we're ready for more bunnies to add to this bunny
- 26:12boiler pot of theories. But first I want to give you facts, actual
- 26:18facts, not theories. In July two thousand and two, Rod was charged
- 26:23by the National Bureau of Investigation as the mastermind of Nita's murder, but he
- 26:32managed to leave for the US five months earlier before being charged. The National
- 26:37Bureau of Investigation also followed murder charges against Madell, the self confessed assassin.
- 26:45I mean, come on, madel you can't go out at a press conference
- 26:49and say, hey, I killed somebody and not think you're going to get
- 26:52charged, just my opinion. Rod was in the US in two thousand and
- 26:59three when he was charged with the murder of Blanca. He left the Philippines
- 27:04in January two thousand and two to visit his mother, who was dying at
- 27:08that time, and never returned. Rod was later arrested at his home and
- 27:14detained at the Sacramento County Jail after the Philippine government filed an extradition request.
- 27:22The US court denied the extradition request. Guys, I don't I can't understand
- 27:29why, but I guess I guess they did. Rod immediately was released from
- 27:34jail. The Philippine government filed a second extradition case against Rod, but did
- 27:41not receive any official response from the United States government. Come on us,
- 27:48we can do a little better than that. Nothing more was heard from him
- 27:52until Rod committed suicide on July eleventh, two thousand and seven, by jumping
- 28:00from a second floor balcony of the Tracy Inn in Tracy, California, where
- 28:04he had been staying for the previous three days. Guys, I have to
- 28:08stop right here and tell you we used to live in Brentwood, California.
- 28:12I've actually been to Tracy, California. Can't say I've been to that hotel,
- 28:18but I've been there. What in the heck was he doing in Tracy,
- 28:22California. I don't know, just a very obscure place that he wound
- 28:26up. Nita's daughter, Kay torres lamented in two thousand and eight that after
- 28:33seven years, the criminal case is still pending trial. She stated she is
- 28:37convinced Philip Medell is guilty of the crime. As for Philip Mandell, the
- 28:45self confessed killer, he was detained for eight years. He died of pneumonia
- 28:51at the age of sixty two in April twenty ten. Now let's backtrack and
- 28:59add a few more facts of the story. The charges that the National Buer
- 29:04of Investigation, Ronaldo Waiko, said were anchored mainly on Madell's confession that rod
- 29:11an American hired him to kill Nita Blanca Dorothy Jones in real life because the
- 29:21actress threatened to end their stormy tenure marriage. Struck with guilt, Medell confessed
- 29:27with killings after he was arrested weeks into the investigation, but later and an
- 29:36emotional outburst in front of news cameras he recanted his confession, claiming he was
- 29:42tortured into owning up to the crime. Despite this, investigators used his confession
- 29:52in the first place. Madell's retraction was done publicly and not under oath,
- 29:57so his testimony can still be used as a basis for the charges. Wiko
- 30:03explained, remember friends he also had conflicting accusations by initially saying that he was
- 30:11a professional killer hired by a middleman, Mike Martinez, and was paid fifty
- 30:18thousand Philippine pesos to do the job. Authorities also said that Meddell had to
- 30:25be involved because he wouldn't have sent surrender feelers if he were not boosting feather.
- 30:33Their chances of a conviction, Wiko said, are the testimonies of twenty
- 30:37five witnesses who could pinpoint where the killers were at the time of the murder.
- 30:45But what may prove the killer's guilt beyond reasonable doubt, Waiko says,
- 30:49are two key pieces of evidence. A Swiss army knife which was allegedly used
- 30:59as the murder and an umbrella that could play Strunk at the scene of the
- 31:04crime. Were able to establish strong evidence against Drunk, including the receipt for
- 31:11the Swiss knife and umbrella used in killing the actress, Wiko said. Investigators
- 31:18say Rod Strunk bought the knife at Robinson's Gallery of mall And Mattilong City two
- 31:25days before Blanca's body was found in her car parked at the sixth floor parking
- 31:30garage of the Office of the Government Censor's Board in nearby Green Hills, San
- 31:36Juan. As for the umbrella, which witnesses said Rodd always kept in his
- 31:42Nissan, it was found in Blanca's Nissan Sinder Sedan the day she was killed.
- 31:49Strunk admitted to NBI investigators before he committed suicide that he was at the
- 31:56scene of the crime on the morning of the murder, saying he merely took
- 32:00a look but never opened Nita's car. A witness who knew Nita, Letitia
- 32:07san Jose, said the umbrella was not in the car when Nita came to
- 32:13visit her two nights before the murder, and aside from a killer's confession,
- 32:19witnesses and the two key pieces of evidence, Waiko said they had a motive
- 32:25money. Waiko said their marriage was no longer working then and that the actress
- 32:31had informed her husband that he would be disinherited, Nita had prepared a last
- 32:37will and testament, bequeathing all of her properties to her daughter, Katherine Torres.
- 32:45If Blanca had an older marriage, as I said earlier, Strunk would
- 32:49get nothing. Finally, a November six, two thousand and one, Rod
- 32:54picked up Medel from an undisclosed place and had dinner at a command restaurant and
- 33:01madelong on edessay. They proceeded to the office of the Movie Television Review and
- 33:09Classification Board on the thirty third floor of the Atlanta Sitter Building in Green Hills,
- 33:16where Nita's car was parked. Using a duplicate key, Rod left Mindel
- 33:22inside the car and left. He came back several hours later with his wife
- 33:30and another woman. He then had an argument with Nita over the will,
- 33:36after which he, the other woman, and Medel ganged up on Nita.
- 33:40Based on forensic evidence, Nita was punched and kicked repeatedly, and, Asai
- 33:46said, was stabbed thirteen times. Nita's daughter reportedly expressed relief over the falling
- 33:52of the charges. According to Justice Harriet Dimitru Tores, lawyer Kay was happy
- 34:00with the development. This Who'd done It case should be a simple matter of
- 34:07resolution, but evidence and testimonies and even the theories regarding the murder makes it
- 34:14more complicated than it should be. Just like in the movies, Nita Blanca's
- 34:20life is a fairy tale come true when her dreams of being a movie star
- 34:25came to fruition. Success, and accolades were hers for the taking, a
- 34:31dream that any aspiring actress would die for. But just like in the movies,
- 34:39Nita's death is a gruesome and tragic affair, a shocking incident because it
- 34:47was totally unexpected. Many people still think it was the husband who did it,
- 34:53and yet there are those who say it couldn't have been him. One
- 34:58strong point to conser sitter is why would he have jumped off a second floor
- 35:04building when the odds of surviving the fall far outweighs being dead. I mean,
- 35:10guys, it's only two stories. That's like jumping off the second story.
- 35:15I mean, I would think broken legs. I don't know. There
- 35:21must be some other power play here that we may not know about. Perhaps
- 35:25we never will with the death of Rod. I don't think we will ever
- 35:35truly have the answers in this case. This episode was researched and written by
