- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:08This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:17good news at work in a way that
- 0:19actually makes sense.
- 0:26I want to start this episode by having
- 0:27you remember stories you lived inside of as
- 0:30a child.
- 0:31I remember one of the very first birthday
- 0:33parties I went to was my friend Mark
- 0:35who loved Star Wars.
- 0:36I did not know about Star Wars, but
- 0:38we watched what later became called episode four.
- 0:42It was probably already called episode four by
- 0:43that point, but you know, the first one
- 0:44that really came out and I saw Darth
- 0:46Vader and I saw Princess Leia.
- 0:48I saw Luke Skywalker and it's like, wow,
- 0:54outer space, X-wings, explosions, lightsabers, the force.
- 1:00And I have lived inside of the Star
- 1:02Wars universe ever since that day.
- 1:05And you know, I still go and see
- 1:07Star Wars movies in the theaters, even when
- 1:09they're not that great.
- 1:10I think I've already mentioned in an earlier
- 1:12episode that I went and saw episode one,
- 1:13the Phantom Menace, because they had a rerelease
- 1:15in theaters.
- 1:16I just live inside of the Star Wars
- 1:18universe, right?
- 1:18I think about life in terms of the
- 1:21things that I've learned from that story, how
- 1:22there's masters and apprentices, how there's unseen realities
- 1:27that permeate our life, how there's sometimes really
- 1:30bad haircuts.
- 1:31Okay.
- 1:33So when we think about our friends who
- 1:36are at that stage of seeking Jesus, that's
- 1:39kind of the stage we're in here as
- 1:40we've been talking about the five thresholds of
- 1:43faith that people often go through on their
- 1:44way toward becoming disciples of Jesus.
- 1:47When they're at that exciting stage of really
- 1:48trying to get to a point of resolution,
- 1:50really seeking answers, this is the stage at
- 1:53which it is most helpful to share the
- 1:56good news.
- 1:57We've emphasized listening and the importance of not
- 2:00pushing, not pressuring, not forcing anything, and that's
- 2:02still true during this stage.
- 2:04At the same time, this is the most
- 2:05appropriate stage for you to say some stuff,
- 2:07for you to share some things.
- 2:09And one of the best ways to share
- 2:11is to share stories.
- 2:14If you know the teaching of Jesus in
- 2:15the Gospels, you know, this is one of
- 2:17Jesus's primary ways of teaching.
- 2:20It's not his only way of teaching, right?
- 2:22Jesus also, like in the Sermon on the
- 2:23Mount, he had discourses where he would just
- 2:25say, you know, prepositional things, no, but not
- 2:27prepositional things, prepositional things, you know, statements like
- 2:30it's more blessed to give than to receive,
- 2:33right?
- 2:33Or do unto others as you would have
- 2:35them do unto you, things that didn't necessarily
- 2:36have a story to convey them.
- 2:40At the same time, more often than not,
- 2:42he would convey what the kingdom of God
- 2:45was like by using a story.
- 2:47He most often did this using a certain
- 2:48type of story called a parable.
- 2:50And I want you, before we talk about
- 2:52parables, to think back to the stories you
- 2:54lived in as a child.
- 2:55Maybe for you it was also Star Wars,
- 2:58maybe it was the Chronicles of Narnia, maybe
- 3:01it was Harry Potter.
- 3:02Think about what comes to your mind when
- 3:05you imagine those stories.
- 3:08For me, it's the characters and the places
- 3:11and the events.
- 3:13It's not like I remember propositional statements from
- 3:16Harry Potter or from Star Wars.
- 3:18Like, it is good to be courageous, although
- 3:21it is true that it is good to
- 3:22be courageous.
- 3:23That's not what I remember.
- 3:23What I remember is Luke in the trench
- 3:25trusting the force and firing and the death
- 3:28star exploding.
- 3:29Like, that's what I remember.
- 3:30I remember this setting.
- 3:32It's something that where I can put myself
- 3:33there in the cockpit with Luke and think
- 3:35in my life, when I'm facing difficult things,
- 3:38can I trust in the power of goodness
- 3:41that I know that's not just impersonal, but
- 3:43is actually Trinitarian personal goodness, that like, you
- 3:45know, things are going to be okay and
- 3:46the death star is going to be exploded.
- 3:48Like, yes.
- 3:49Okay.
- 3:50What this means with the parables of Jesus
- 3:52is sometimes we misunderstand these things.
- 3:54Sometimes we think that the parables are just
- 3:56like illustrations.
- 3:58They're just like packaging for a propositional truth
- 4:00statement.
- 4:02But they're actually more like those stories that
- 4:04we lived inside of as kids.
- 4:06They're more like something that we keep coming
- 4:07back to and exploring and putting ourselves inside
- 4:11of and looking at the world through the
- 4:13texture and the structure of this world that
- 4:16Jesus builds through the story.
- 4:19And I'm drawing here on the work of
- 4:20a New Testament scholar who spent years in
- 4:22the Middle East and was kind of a
- 4:24student of Middle Eastern culture.
- 4:26And because he was a student of Middle
- 4:27Eastern culture, brought that to the way he
- 4:29did his New Testament scholarship.
- 4:31So his name is Kenneth Bailey.
- 4:32I just want to read a little bit
- 4:33about what he says about the parables of
- 4:35Jesus from his book, Jesus Through Middle Eastern
- 4:38Eyes.
- 4:39So Ken Bailey writes, theologians often use illustrations
- 4:42to infuse energy and clarification into their abstract
- 4:45reflections.
- 4:46A metaphor, however, is not an illustration of
- 4:49an idea.
- 4:50It is a mode of theological discourse.
- 4:53The metaphor does more than explain meaning.
- 4:55It creates meaning.
- 4:57A parable is an extended metaphor.
- 5:00And as such, it is not a delivery
- 5:02system for an idea, but a house in
- 5:05which the reader slash listener is invited to
- 5:07take up residence.
- 5:10So this is what Jesus thought was a
- 5:12good idea when he was teaching other people
- 5:15about the kingdom of God, when he was
- 5:16sharing the good news, was how can I
- 5:19give people not just an idea, not just
- 5:21something abstract, but a house in which to
- 5:23take up residence.
- 5:25And we can do the same thing.
- 5:27So I want to talk a couple ways
- 5:29about how we can share the good news
- 5:30in this way, the way that Jesus did.
- 5:32One is to use the parables of Jesus
- 5:34himself.
- 5:35And then the other is to find parables.
- 5:37So let me talk about using the parables
- 5:39of Jesus himself.
- 5:40And for this, I think it'd be helpful
- 5:41to use an actual example.
- 5:43So let's just use one of Jesus's simplest
- 5:45parables.
- 5:46This is the one about the mustard seed
- 5:48might ring a bell.
- 5:50If you're not familiar with it, it's really
- 5:51short.
- 5:52Mark chapter four, starting in verse 30.
- 5:55Again, Jesus said, what shall we say the
- 5:58kingdom of God is like, or what parable
- 5:59shall we use to describe it?
- 6:01It is like a mustard seed, which is
- 6:03the smallest of all seeds on earth.
- 6:04Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the
- 6:08largest of all garden plants with such big
- 6:10branches that the birds can perch in its
- 6:13shade.
- 6:14Okay, that's a really simple metaphor for the
- 6:18kingdom of God.
- 6:18But you see what Jesus did.
- 6:19He introduced it.
- 6:20He's like, I'm talking about the kingdom of
- 6:21God.
- 6:22What is it like?
- 6:22What can we use to describe it?
- 6:23And then he's like, it's like a mustard
- 6:25seed.
- 6:25He gives this image that people would be
- 6:27familiar with in their context.
- 6:30So how could you use this parable in
- 6:33a conversation with a friend who's at that
- 6:35stage of seeking?
- 6:37Well, I find it can actually be really
- 6:39natural to kind of weave one of Jesus's
- 6:41parables into a regular conversation.
- 6:45So obviously we always start with listening.
- 6:47So we're listening to the other person, but
- 6:49they might say something that makes you think
- 6:51of one of the parables of Jesus.
- 6:54So for example, maybe your friend says something
- 6:55like, man, we've been talking about these things
- 6:58and I like the idea of change and
- 7:01making a change in my life, but I
- 7:03just feel like any kind of change would
- 7:06just take so long.
- 7:07And I don't even know if it would
- 7:08really be possible.
- 7:10Like can people really change?
- 7:12Okay, good reflective listening.
- 7:14You might reflect back to them what they
- 7:15just said, like, wow, it sounds like you're
- 7:17saying the idea of a change, even though
- 7:19it's not unattractive, it doesn't seem plausible or
- 7:22possible because the change would be so huge.
- 7:25Then you pivot to a parable.
- 7:27So again, not something you can necessarily plan
- 7:28in advance before the conversation, but just in
- 7:30the moment you're remembering this connects to a
- 7:32parable of Jesus.
- 7:33So you pivot to the parable.
- 7:34You say, you know, Jesus in one of
- 7:36his teachings, he actually told a story that
- 7:37I think connects to that question.
- 7:39Then retell the parable in your own words.
- 7:42You don't have to have it memorized.
- 7:44Just say, you know, one time Jesus said
- 7:46that there are these really tiny seeds, mustard
- 7:48seeds, but if you plant one in the
- 7:50ground, it grows up to this huge plant,
- 7:52almost like a tree, and it's so big
- 7:54that birds make nests of it.
- 7:56Then you interpret the parable and connect it
- 7:59back to what your friend is saying.
- 8:01So I feel like what Jesus is saying
- 8:02is sometimes the kingdom of God, this dynamic
- 8:05of change that we've been talking about, it
- 8:07starts in a way that looks unimpressive, small,
- 8:11fragile, but that doesn't mean the change isn't
- 8:13real.
- 8:14Over time, the change is so dramatic that
- 8:17it affects not just that plant, not just
- 8:19the mustard seed plant, but other creatures too,
- 8:21like the birds that are common affected like
- 8:23it.
- 8:24And I think that could be true of
- 8:25you.
- 8:25I hear you saying that change maybe seems
- 8:27impossible, but change can start small and that
- 8:30doesn't mean it isn't real.
- 8:31And I think God could do something in
- 8:32your life where you become a person who
- 8:34blesses other people's lives all around you.
- 8:37Okay, now in that final moment, I kind
- 8:39of switched to prophetically speaking into my person's
- 8:41life, right?
- 8:42And that's part of the spiritual gift of
- 8:44prophecy, which again, different people have kind of
- 8:47different levels of that, but all of us,
- 8:49I think, have some capacity to discern what
- 8:53God is doing in someone else's life and
- 8:54then speak into their life.
- 8:56Again, in a context of trust as appropriate,
- 8:58not forcing anything.
- 9:00But this is a great example of that,
- 9:01where somebody's shared something vulnerably with you, you
- 9:03connect it back to something that Jesus taught,
- 9:05and then you prophetically interpret the parable in
- 9:08terms of what it could mean for their
- 9:09life.
- 9:10That's actually an incredibly powerful thing to do
- 9:12for a friend, is you do it respectfully,
- 9:13you do it clearly.
- 9:14It's not some pat thing you prepped in
- 9:16advance, you're doing it in the moment because
- 9:18you're actually listening to what they're really saying.
- 9:20I found that when people hear Jesus's teachings
- 9:24like that, like as though the teaching is
- 9:26for them, that that really helps in the
- 9:29seeking stage.
- 9:30That helps them begin to ponder what would
- 9:33it be like to say yes to this
- 9:35Jesus, this Jesus who invites me into this
- 9:38process of change.
- 9:40It's a great reminder that it's always helpful,
- 9:42again, not just for your sake, but for
- 9:44the sake of other people you're having conversations
- 9:46with, to just know the teachings of Jesus
- 9:48really well, to know the stories of Jesus,
- 9:50to read them and ponder them and meditate
- 9:51on them, and just live inside of them
- 9:54for yourself.
- 9:56And then also, so that in a given
- 9:58moment, when somebody says something and that kind
- 10:00of light bulb goes off, you can just
- 10:01easily paraphrase one of Jesus's parables without having
- 10:04to get out your Bible or interrupting the
- 10:06flow of conversation.
- 10:07You can just sort of like weave it
- 10:08in there and then speak into your friend's
- 10:11life.
- 10:12So this is a kind of scriptural, prophetic
- 10:15evangelism rooted in the parables of Jesus.
- 10:19You can do this in a very quiet,
- 10:20gentle way.
- 10:22You don't have to have some impressive personality
- 10:24to make this work.
- 10:26You just have to be ready and sensitive
- 10:28to how the Holy Spirit's leading in those
- 10:30conversations.
- 10:32Okay, so that's one way that we can
- 10:34use the parables of Jesus himself to be
- 10:36like Jesus in the way we teach.
- 10:38But we can also be like Jesus even
- 10:40more by doing what he did, which is
- 10:43finding things and then telling parables based on
- 10:46the things we find, finding parables in our
- 10:48surroundings, in the kind of shared experience that
- 10:51we and our friends have.
- 10:52So, for example, Jesus likely had in the
- 10:55back of his mind this passage in the
- 10:58prophet Ezekiel that talks about a plant growing
- 11:00up and the birds of the air coming
- 11:02in and nesting in the branches of that
- 11:04plant, right?
- 11:05So Jesus knows this passage.
- 11:07His listeners maybe also know this passage.
- 11:09It's part of their shared repertoire.
- 11:10But then he's looking around and he's like,
- 11:12oh, you know what would be really interesting
- 11:14would be to emphasize how unimpressive the beginning
- 11:18of that plant is.
- 11:19So he's like, what's the smallest seed around?
- 11:20He's like, mustard seed.
- 11:21That's small.
- 11:22And we all know what mustard seeds are.
- 11:23So he's like, okay, so look at the
- 11:24mustard seed and how tiny it is.
- 11:26That's the seed that grows into the great
- 11:28plant.
- 11:29So he's got something that he's working with,
- 11:31the scriptures that he knew, but then he's
- 11:33using something in shared experience with his listeners.
- 11:37So if we really want to imitate Jesus
- 11:38in the way we share the good news,
- 11:40we can do that.
- 11:42It's like we're working on the scriptures that
- 11:43we know, the Hebrew scriptures and the New
- 11:46Testament, especially the stories and teachings of Jesus.
- 11:49But we're also looking for something in our
- 11:50shared experience with our friends that we can
- 11:53connect to and kind of make a metaphor
- 11:55with.
- 11:56Shared books, shared movies, even current events, video
- 12:00games, anything where you and your friend have
- 12:02like a shared point of connection, you can
- 12:05kind of draw that metaphor out naturally.
- 12:08So let me give just a couple of
- 12:09examples.
- 12:10An old one and a more recent one.
- 12:12So the old one, Pixar movie, Finding Nemo.
- 12:15Pixar movies are like laid in with metaphors
- 12:17that are helpful to use for describing the
- 12:18spiritual life.
- 12:19Partly that's because there are some actually like
- 12:21fantastic disciples of Jesus who are some of
- 12:23the screenwriters at Pixar, if you didn't know.
- 12:26Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, shout out to you
- 12:28guys.
- 12:29But it's also true just of any good
- 12:31literature.
- 12:32Like it doesn't have to be intended by
- 12:33the writers to resonate because any good story
- 12:36is going to have little moments that illustrate
- 12:38something true about the human experience and we
- 12:40can connect with those moments.
- 12:42So Finding Nemo, right?
- 12:44This came out a long time ago, but
- 12:45people are still watching it.
- 12:46Thanks, Disney Plus.
- 12:48And what is the story of Finding Nemo?
- 12:50It's a son who is lost and a
- 12:52father who sacrifices everything to go find his
- 12:55son.
- 12:56Okay, so if your friend has ever seen
- 12:59Finding Nemo, you can be like, what is
- 13:01the kingdom of God like?
- 13:02Oh, it's kind of like in Finding Nemo.
- 13:04You know how like Nemo is lost and
- 13:06in Marlin like rearranges his entire life to
- 13:09go chasing across the world to find his
- 13:12son so that they can be together again.
- 13:13I think that's a little bit like you
- 13:15know how God the Father seeks us out
- 13:17and wants to be close to us even
- 13:18though we're often far away from him.
- 13:21Now it's not like Finding Nemo was created
- 13:23to be an allegory of the gospel.
- 13:24That's not what I'm saying.
- 13:25What I'm saying is there's a metaphor.
- 13:27There's something in your shared experience where you
- 13:28can say the kingdom of God is like
- 13:30this.
- 13:31And hopefully that's a fresh thing.
- 13:32Like I imagine there's a lot of people
- 13:34who've seen Finding Nemo and have never even
- 13:36thought about how, whoa, that's kind of like
- 13:38the love of God.
- 13:40And if you're right now having that experience
- 13:41where you're like, wow, I'm a Christian and
- 13:42I've never even thought about Finding Nemo that
- 13:44way.
- 13:44That's okay.
- 13:45That's totally okay.
- 13:46But this is something you can start doing
- 13:47like with Pixar especially, but with any good
- 13:50literature, any good story, have your antenna up
- 13:52for like, is there a metaphor here?
- 13:53Is there an image here that could connect
- 13:55to what the kingdom of God is like?
- 13:58Okay.
- 13:58More recent example, current events.
- 14:00If you saw the Summer Olympics in 2024,
- 14:04Sunisa Lee, Suni Lee, she had this amazing
- 14:07experience in Tokyo Olympics where, you know, not
- 14:12Jordan Chiles.
- 14:13I'm failing here.
- 14:14Simone Biles, where Simone Biles had to pull
- 14:16out for her own mental health.
- 14:18She was dealing with the twisties.
- 14:20You know, she didn't feel safe competing and
- 14:23Suni had the opportunity to medal, to get
- 14:25the gold medal that year.
- 14:27Amazing.
- 14:27But then she was diagnosed with like these
- 14:30two rare kidney diseases and she couldn't compete
- 14:32at all for a while.
- 14:33And we didn't know what her future was
- 14:35going to hold.
- 14:35But then she got treatment for those kidney
- 14:37diseases and she was able to go back
- 14:39to the Paris Olympics and medal and get
- 14:41another gold and a couple bronzes and like,
- 14:43like, amazing, amazing.
- 14:45Okay.
- 14:46So if your friend likes the Olympics or
- 14:48saw the Olympics or like, you know, whatever,
- 14:50knows the story of Suni Lee, you can
- 14:51be like, that's kind of like, I think
- 14:53what we go through spiritually, like all of
- 14:55us.
- 14:55It's like we have this incredible potential, but
- 14:58we also have this disease and it may
- 15:00not be a kidney disease.
- 15:01It's more like a, like a spiritual disease.
- 15:03Like there's this darkness inside of our souls
- 15:04and we need medication for that.
- 15:06And if we get the medication for that,
- 15:08then we can be healed and whole and
- 15:10can go on and do amazing things.
- 15:13And, and I think that's what Jesus offers
- 15:14us is like this spiritual medication for our
- 15:18souls.
- 15:19Okay.
- 15:20So you see how you're using something in
- 15:22the shared experience to then make an analogy
- 15:25in the person's life.
- 15:26And you don't have to be like me.
- 15:27You don't have to be all, you know,
- 15:30dramatic and deep voiced and, and preacherly as
- 15:34in the way you say these, you can
- 15:35just say it conversationally in your own personality,
- 15:37however makes sense for you.
- 15:39And if you are a dramatic person, then
- 15:40do say dramatically because that's you.
- 15:41That's, that's genuine.
- 15:43So these are two different ways that can
- 15:44be really powerful to share the good news
- 15:46the same way that Jesus himself shared it.
- 15:48So we're learning from Jesus, not just in
- 15:50terms of his content, but also in his
- 15:52method, which is using his own stories and
- 15:55then also finding parables in our shared experience
- 15:57to help people see what the kingdom of
- 15:59God is like.
- 16:00And then by God's grace, those become images
- 16:04that people can live inside of.
- 16:06They become houses that they take up residence
- 16:08in and they look around and as they're
- 16:09in that seeking stage, they begin to look
- 16:11through the windows of that house and see
- 16:14the world in a new way.
- 16:18Lord Jesus, we want to live inside the
- 16:20house that you are building.
