- 0:00Speaker 1: Good afternoon on a Final Four Friday. Andrew Zimola hanging
- 0:06Speaker 1: out with you on the Craig Way Show three hours
- 0:09Speaker 1: as we gear up for Texas and South Carolina tonight.
- 0:14Speaker 1: The Longhorns trying to make it back to the National
- 0:16Speaker 1: Championship game. Vick Shaffer trying to get back to the
- 0:21Speaker 1: National Championship game. And the job is not going to
- 0:25Speaker 1: be an easy one. It's hard to beat a good
- 0:28Speaker 1: team once, let alone twice, let alone three times. Right,
- 0:35Speaker 1: this is the time you're facing off against a team
- 0:38Speaker 1: in South Carolina for the fourth time this season. Vick
- 0:41Speaker 1: Shaffer and his crew have their work cut out for them. Also,
- 0:45Speaker 1: men's Final Four action begins this Saturday in San Antonio,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Auburn and Florida at five pm tomorrow University of Houston
- 0:55Speaker 1: and Duke at seven forty. But you know how these
- 0:58Speaker 1: things run, it's going to be However, soon that first
- 1:01Speaker 1: game wraps up, we will hear from Vic Schaffer and
- 1:05Speaker 1: his team later in the hour. We also will hear
- 1:08Speaker 1: from Craig Way in the four o'clock hour, as Craig
- 1:11Speaker 1: is in Tampa Bay on the call tonight for the matchup.
- 1:15Speaker 1: We will get the last previews between these two teams.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Will get his thoughts'll after shoot around and what we
- 1:21Speaker 1: can expect. I can tell you right now, the experts
- 1:25Speaker 1: are not in the favor of the Long Cords. Every
- 1:29Speaker 1: gas bag, every expert, quote unquote I have seen have
- 1:34Speaker 1: been picking against Texas. So we'll get into some of
- 1:37Speaker 1: the reasons why they might be doing that and what
- 1:39Speaker 1: Texas needs to do to bounce back. We also have
- 1:42Speaker 1: a new Coach of the Year and AP Player of
- 1:46Speaker 1: the Year. Bruce Pearl and Rick Patino were named co
- 1:50Speaker 1: Coach of the Year by the AP earlier today. Bruce
- 1:53Speaker 1: Pearl turned around Auburn gets them into the final four.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Rick Patino has gotten Saint John's back to to the
- 2:00Speaker 1: dominating program that they are in the Big East.
- 2:03Speaker 2: It's one of the.
- 2:04Speaker 1: First times, is the first time I think that they've
- 2:06Speaker 1: split the Coach of the Year honors between two guys.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Pearl and Patino each received twenty votes on the ballot
- 2:12Speaker 1: from the national media. They got a share of the trophy,
- 2:18Speaker 1: which is cool and I would say before before it
- 2:22Speaker 1: was announced, I would have picked Patino for how he
- 2:26Speaker 1: turned Saint John's back into the national conversation after the
- 2:29Speaker 1: incredible run that they had in the Big East in
- 2:33Speaker 1: the eighties and nineties to get it back to where
- 2:35Speaker 1: it is now where many people were picking them to
- 2:38Speaker 1: win the entire thing.
- 2:40Speaker 2: You got even a lot of credit for that.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Also, ap Player of the Year on the men's side
- 2:45Speaker 1: of things, Cooper Flag. So you're gonna see the coach
- 2:47Speaker 1: of the Year and the player of the Year tomorrow
- 2:50Speaker 1: in the men's Final four. Of course, we also have
- 2:52Speaker 1: Florida Man Friday to day for Inconceivable and the voice
- 2:56Speaker 1: of the Spurs, Bill Shoning joining us in the three
- 3:01Speaker 1: o'clock hour twelve seasons with Texas, twenty four seasons with
- 3:05Speaker 1: the San Antonio Spurs. He has a big announcement as well.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Sarkisian sat down with Chris Sims. We will hear some
- 3:12Speaker 1: of that. He talked about the quarterbacks both in the
- 3:14Speaker 1: NFL and still on the forty Acres. So a lot
- 3:17Speaker 1: of course to get into. On today's program. It's a
- 3:21Speaker 1: jam packed to the Gills Final four Friday on The
- 3:26Speaker 1: Craig Way Show. So let's start with the men's Final four.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Let's talk with Kelvin Sampson, who got his Houston Cougars
- 3:34Speaker 1: to this point after a thirty four and three regular season,
- 3:38Speaker 1: after winning the Big Twelve regular season title and then
- 3:41Speaker 1: the Big Twelve championship, rolling on through and now they
- 3:45Speaker 1: face off against one of the best teams in the country,
- 3:47Speaker 1: one of the most talented teams in the country, the
- 3:50Speaker 1: Duke Blue Devils. Kelvin Samson was on The Herd earlier
- 3:53Speaker 1: this week talking about how you prepare for a team
- 3:57Speaker 1: like Duke.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Really haven't watched Duke, but I have watched him enough
- 4:02Speaker 3: over the course of the year. The first thing that
- 4:06Speaker 3: jumps out to me is what a great job John
- 4:09Speaker 3: did and putting his team together. You know, for example,
- 4:12Speaker 3: bringing a kid like Scion James in to pair next
- 4:16Speaker 3: to Cooper Flag and Knepo and the big kid inside
- 4:21Speaker 3: because he's smart, he's tough, doesn't require a lot of shots.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It's got a lot of winner in him.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Cooper Flag was going to be the centerpiece.
- 4:31Speaker 3: How they fit everybody around them as what's so impressive.
- 4:35Speaker 3: How do you start to stop Cooper flagging?
- 4:37Speaker 4: But that's kind of a silly question. You don't.
- 4:40Speaker 3: But you have to be the best version of yourself.
- 4:42Speaker 3: You know, we played in the Big Twelve the last
- 4:44Speaker 3: two years and you know, whether it's Kansas or Iowa
- 4:48Speaker 3: State or Texas Tech. There's a lot of really good teams,
- 4:52Speaker 3: and all those teams had a best player.
- 4:55Speaker 4: So we'll come up with something. Now, will it be
- 4:57Speaker 4: good enough? I don't know. Maybe it will, maybe it won't.
- 5:00Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, every team has
- 5:03Speaker 3: to focus on what they do good and try to
- 5:05Speaker 3: beat their best version themselves for that forty minutes. For
- 5:08Speaker 3: that forty minutes, we have to be the best version
- 5:11Speaker 3: of the Houston Cougar as we can be.
- 5:13Speaker 1: So Juwan Roberts, a senior. A senior for the Houston Cougars,
- 5:20Speaker 1: big deciding factor on who's going to end or how
- 5:25Speaker 1: this game is going to end up. Houston does a
- 5:26Speaker 1: great job defensively throwing different bodies at players in the
- 5:32Speaker 1: NCAA tournament. Over the last two games, he's had four
- 5:35Speaker 1: steals between Purdue and Tennessee. On the season, a ton
- 5:39Speaker 1: of steals as well. He got asked, is Duke the
- 5:42Speaker 1: most talented team that his Cougar team has faced this
- 5:46Speaker 1: season on paper?
- 5:48Speaker 5: Yeah, but when we've seen that a lot, and especially
- 5:51Speaker 5: when we played against Auburn, Alabama, those teams, Texas Tech, Arizona,
- 5:57Speaker 5: but now I feel like our defense is will get this.
- 6:00Speaker 5: So on paper yet are pretty good, but I feel like,
- 6:03Speaker 5: you know, once we come in with that defense mentality,
- 6:07Speaker 5: I'm just gonna be a different ball game.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And that's what Houston does, I think better than most
- 6:10Speaker 1: teams in college basketball. In fact, that's what they do
- 6:13Speaker 1: do better than most teams in college basketball, and that
- 6:15Speaker 1: is defend. Now, John Shire was on the head coach
- 6:19Speaker 1: of Duke. He was on the Scott Van Peltz Sports
- 6:22Speaker 1: Center yesterday. He got asked about how do you prepare
- 6:25Speaker 1: for a team like Houston when they can throw so
- 6:28Speaker 1: many adjustments at you on the fly.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Houston no offense to our scout team. We have a
- 6:33Speaker 6: great scout team. It's not something you can replicate. And
- 6:37Speaker 6: so it's a combination of understanding what could or could
- 6:41Speaker 6: not be there. But then at the same time, you
- 6:44Speaker 6: don't want to make them out to be the boogeyman.
- 6:46Speaker 1: No, you need to focus on a team in Houston
- 6:48Speaker 1: that can throw a lot of different looks at you.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Obviously.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Now, Scheister went on to talk about his biggest concern
- 6:55Speaker 1: when it comes to facing Houston.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Well, a lot concerns me.
- 6:58Speaker 6: I think you start with fact that they've had, you know,
- 7:01Speaker 6: the core their team has been together for multiple years
- 7:05Speaker 6: and so the experience they've had together, their connection is
- 7:09Speaker 6: incredibly deep. But they're just a team that doesn't beat themselves.
- 7:13Speaker 6: You know, you have to really beat them, and it
- 7:16Speaker 6: starts with they make everything difficult for you on our offense.
- 7:20Speaker 6: Our offense, their defense is legit. You know, when you
- 7:25Speaker 6: see one two guys moving in a pick a roll
- 7:28Speaker 6: defense together, another three are moving at the same exact time.
- 7:31Speaker 6: I mean, it's incredibly impressive when you watch him play.
- 7:34Speaker 6: And then they have a top ten offense in the country.
- 7:36Speaker 6: You know, they have three guys that are shooting over
- 7:38Speaker 6: forty from three. They polenge you in the offensive glass.
- 7:42Speaker 6: They're just just they're They're a great team, and so
- 7:46Speaker 6: a lot concerns me. I feel we're a great team too,
- 7:49Speaker 6: and we're excited for the challenge, but a ton of
- 7:51Speaker 6: respect for coach Sampson and what he's done, and then
- 7:54Speaker 6: their team of how connected and how tough they are.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Coach Sampson has built a big good at Houston that
- 8:01Speaker 1: is now trying to get to the national championship for
- 8:04Speaker 1: the first time since the eighties. With the phil Slamajama team.
- 8:08Speaker 1: This is an argument between two different philosophies when it
- 8:12Speaker 1: comes to college coaching as well. Duke is the school
- 8:15Speaker 1: of one and Done's young players, in Houston's the school
- 8:17Speaker 1: of Wiley Vets guys that have been in school three
- 8:20Speaker 1: four years together. So it's going to, I think, going
- 8:23Speaker 1: to change a lot of people's minds on how you
- 8:25Speaker 1: build a program. Ironically, we've seen teams win with the
- 8:29Speaker 1: one and done system. We saw Calipari do it at Kentucky,
- 8:32Speaker 1: We've seen other teams do it as well. But then
- 8:35Speaker 1: you think about what Jay Wright did at Villanova, how
- 8:37Speaker 1: he was able to build a program on guys who
- 8:39Speaker 1: were there multiple year over year over year. I also, again,
- 8:43Speaker 1: college basketball a little bit different, but college baseball is
- 8:47Speaker 1: a similar spot where if you have a team of
- 8:50Speaker 1: guys who have all been together for a long period
- 8:52Speaker 1: of time, season overseason, who have gone through deep NCAA
- 8:56Speaker 1: tournament maybe conference tournament runs, you see those teams have
- 9:00Speaker 1: more success when they get to the final stages of
- 9:03Speaker 1: whatever tournament they're playing in. Now, Bruce Pearl, who is
- 9:07Speaker 1: not a spring chicken by any means, he talks about
- 9:09Speaker 1: the difference in age between himself and Florida's head coach
- 9:13Speaker 1: Todd Golden.
- 9:14Speaker 7: You know, the only thing, the only way I look
- 9:16Speaker 7: at it is Calvin and I have fewer chances to
- 9:20Speaker 7: get where we are right now was John Shire and
- 9:23Speaker 7: Todd Golden will be back here many more times. So
- 9:27Speaker 7: Calvin and I have better take advantage of it this
- 9:29Speaker 7: time because we're you know, we're we're clearly on the
- 9:32Speaker 7: back nine. I'm not on the eighteenth hole yet, but
- 9:36Speaker 7: we're getting closer. And so no, Todd and John don't
- 9:40Speaker 7: give up anything and experience, They just they just give
- 9:45Speaker 7: up a little bit. And they're not as they're not
- 9:48Speaker 7: as much gray hair, and they may not have been
- 9:52Speaker 7: beat down as much as Calvin and I have been
- 9:54Speaker 7: over the years.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And Bruce Pearl, the head coach of Auburn, the one
- 9:58Speaker 1: seed basing off against one in Florida four one seeds
- 10:02Speaker 1: in the college basketball Final Four in San Antonio for
- 10:05Speaker 1: the men first time since two thousand and eight. The
- 10:07Speaker 1: last time that happened, the games were also played in
- 10:10Speaker 1: San Antonio. But Bruce Pearl makes a good point, Hey,
- 10:13Speaker 1: him and Calvin Sampson, they might not get back to
- 10:15Speaker 1: this point with their programs how do you build a
- 10:18Speaker 1: program and sustain it and try to get to this point?
- 10:21Speaker 1: So this is one more side thing, This is one
- 10:25Speaker 1: more storyline to pay attention to as the men's Final
- 10:29Speaker 1: four begins tomorrow five pm. Auburn and Florida seven p
- 10:33Speaker 1: forty Houston and Duke. Do the old guys got it?
- 10:36Speaker 1: Can we see a Bruce Pearl Calvin Sampson National Championship
- 10:40Speaker 1: Alburn versus Houston? Or are we going to see the
- 10:43Speaker 1: young guys in at Todd Golden's Florida Gators and John
- 10:46Speaker 1: Sires Duke Blue Devils in the National Championship.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Time will tell.
- 10:50Speaker 1: We'll hear more from coaches and players as the program
- 10:54Speaker 1: rolls on. Coming up next will gear you up for
- 10:56Speaker 1: tonight's Final four matchup on the women's side of things
- 11:00Speaker 1: between Texas and South Carolina five forty five air time
- 11:03Speaker 1: six pm, tip A ninety eight one cavet FM. That
- 11:06Speaker 1: is where the game will be had. More coming up
- 11:09Speaker 1: next on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports
- 11:13Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrew Zim will sitting
- 11:16Speaker 1: in for Craig Way this Friday afternoon. Not four o'clock
- 11:20Speaker 1: yet two eighteen as we continue to work our way
- 11:23Speaker 1: through the workday together. I hope things are going good
- 11:26Speaker 1: for you and yours as we gear up for Texas
- 11:30Speaker 1: Women versus South Carolina tonight, five forty five air time,
- 11:35Speaker 1: six pm tip on ninety eight one KVET FM.
- 11:39Speaker 2: That is where you can hear the game.
- 11:41Speaker 1: You can also listen on the free iHeartRadio app always free.
- 11:45Speaker 1: You can make us your number one preset as well,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and yeah, not a bad way to listen to the game.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Craigway will be on the call.
- 11:53Speaker 1: He will join us in the four o'clock hour to
- 11:57Speaker 1: talk Texas Women as well. So he's in Tampa Bay,
- 12:01Speaker 1: he is courtside. We will hear from him and we'll
- 12:04Speaker 1: have a good time doing it too. Okay, so let's
- 12:13Speaker 1: we will continue here. We were gonna talk Texas Women.
- 12:17Speaker 1: We're having a little bit of technical issues here. We'll
- 12:21Speaker 1: see if we can get those things tuned back up.
- 12:26Speaker 1: So Texas Women tonight taking on South Carolina is very
- 12:31Speaker 1: formula for Texas beating South Carolina. Well, that's what it's
- 12:36Speaker 1: looking like. So the experts around college basketball, on college
- 12:40Speaker 1: women's basketball have been talking about this Longhorn team that
- 12:45Speaker 1: we're able to beat the game Cocks earlier this season
- 12:49Speaker 1: when the game was in in Austin, Texas. They snapped
- 12:53Speaker 1: a fifty seven game SEC regular season winning streak. Now,
- 12:57Speaker 1: South Carolina has shown vulnerabilities throughout the season.
- 13:01Speaker 2: This game Cock.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Team can get cold at times during the year. They've
- 13:07Speaker 1: been known to go cold in the shooting side of things.
- 13:10Speaker 1: An earlier loss, multiple players got into foul trouble as well.
- 13:14Speaker 1: For South Carolina, Staley was forced to change the rotation
- 13:19Speaker 1: of players.
- 13:20Speaker 2: It got the team out of sink.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Texas has a very formula formidable defense, number one of
- 13:28Speaker 1: course being Rory Harmon on the defensive side of the
- 13:32Speaker 1: ball making an impact.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Now. The other thing is Madison Booker.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Booker in the losses for Texas this season against South
- 13:41Speaker 1: Carolina seventeen combined points on seven to thirty two shooting
- 13:45Speaker 1: the time that the Longhorns won though seven of twenty
- 13:48Speaker 1: two shooting not efficient, but it did get the job
- 13:52Speaker 1: done for Texas. There are other players need to step
- 13:57Speaker 1: up as well, which would go into Taylor Jones and
- 13:59Speaker 1: the p and Kylo Oldacre as well. If the Longhorns
- 14:02Speaker 1: want to win, it's gonna come down to the ability
- 14:05Speaker 1: to have those players having a big night. If the
- 14:08Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns can score anywhere between forty ish, forty five
- 14:12Speaker 1: ish points and sixty ish points, they could win this game.
- 14:16Speaker 1: The other big part South Carolina's re haul. She said
- 14:20Speaker 1: that she's not concerned about Madison Booker, but she is
- 14:24Speaker 1: the type of player who could make an impact on
- 14:28Speaker 1: the defensive side of things. If she can stop Madison Booker,
- 14:34Speaker 1: then the Longhorns could end up being in a spot
- 14:38Speaker 1: that could get in a lot of trouble. That could
- 14:40Speaker 1: be in a lot of trouble if a Booker is
- 14:42Speaker 1: stopped by Brianna Hall or Bree Hall. I'm sorry that
- 14:49Speaker 1: game tonight of course at five forty five airtime six pm.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Tip for the Final four or it's a quick break,
- 14:57Speaker 1: come back and talk more Texas in a minute on
- 15:00Speaker 1: sports Radio AM thirteen hundred at the Zone.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Thirteen hundred Zone Andrews them we'll hanging out with you
- 15:06Speaker 1: on a finally Friday, Final four edition of The Craigway Show.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Want to thank you guys for hanging out with us.
- 15:13Speaker 1: A little bit of technical issues things, but we're getting
- 15:16Speaker 1: things going as we continue to work our way to
- 15:20Speaker 1: the weekend together, we were talking Texas women's basketball and
- 15:24Speaker 1: how the Texas Longhorns are playing in a Final four
- 15:27Speaker 1: matchup tonight that has everybody on pins and needles. Now,
- 15:31Speaker 1: the Longhorns are two and one this season against South Carolina.
- 15:37Speaker 1: They're a team in the game Cocks who have done
- 15:39Speaker 1: a good job of preventing Texas from doing what they
- 15:42Speaker 1: want on the offensive side of the ball, and the
- 15:44Speaker 1: games that the Longhorns have won this season, it's been
- 15:48Speaker 1: on the shoulders of Madison Booker in her ability to
- 15:51Speaker 1: have offensive production. Now, Texas, in the two losses that
- 15:55Speaker 1: they had this season against South Carolina, Booker combined for
- 15:59Speaker 1: about two seven of twenty four shooting and seventeen points,
- 16:04Speaker 1: which is not what you would want for a Longhorn fan.
- 16:08Speaker 1: It's gonna go the way this game will go the
- 16:11Speaker 1: way that Madison Booker goes. If the Longhorns are able
- 16:14Speaker 1: to fire back and have impactful shooting from Booker, then
- 16:19Speaker 1: they have a chance to win this game.
- 16:21Speaker 2: We will hear.
- 16:21Speaker 1: From the players and coaches here in a little bit
- 16:24Speaker 1: as the Longhorns and their head coach Vic Schaeffer spoke
- 16:30Speaker 1: to the media yesterday gearing us up for this one.
- 16:35Speaker 1: The Longhorns have been in Tampa Bay for the better
- 16:39Speaker 1: part of this week. They got there on Tuesday night,
- 16:42Speaker 1: and part of the reason that they did that was
- 16:44Speaker 1: because of the media availability.
- 16:46Speaker 2: It's been really cool.
- 16:47Speaker 1: We've talked to Craig Way yesterday about how the media
- 16:53Speaker 1: in just general when it comes to covering the Women's
- 16:55Speaker 1: Final Four has been really crazy. A lot of voices,
- 17:01Speaker 1: a lot of questions that you might not have expected,
- 17:05Speaker 1: including questions about which player is most like Vic Shaefer,
- 17:10Speaker 1: which through I think some people for a little bit
- 17:13Speaker 1: of a loop. So we'll get you some of that
- 17:14Speaker 1: audio here in a moment as the Longhorns and South
- 17:20Speaker 1: Carolina game Cocks face off tonight, ninety eight to one.
- 17:23Speaker 1: KVET FM is your home for women's basketball, and we'll
- 17:27Speaker 1: have them tonight five forty five hour time, six pm.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Tip as thirteen hundred the Zone is your home for
- 17:33Speaker 1: a round. Rock Express and one O three one will
- 17:36Speaker 1: be where Texas Baseball plays tonight. Now the baseball program
- 17:40Speaker 1: playing a game against Georgia tonight, one of the best
- 17:44Speaker 1: teams in the SEC.
- 17:46Speaker 8: NOTO A ton I mean, I'm constantly thinking of.
- 17:50Speaker 1: So let's hear from Vic Schaefer from yesterday's press conference,
- 17:56Speaker 1: gearing up his thoughts on how impactful, how important it
- 18:00Speaker 1: is for this team. Let's hear from him talking about
- 18:05Speaker 1: the difference and how special it is to get to
- 18:08Speaker 1: the Final four with this group.
- 18:11Speaker 4: It's special.
- 18:11Speaker 9: I mean five years ago when they hired me, it
- 18:17Speaker 9: was really important to me that Chris Polonsky, Kathy Harston,
- 18:24Speaker 9: and Jody Conrad.
- 18:27Speaker 4: We're in on that. I wanted to.
- 18:30Speaker 9: I wanted their blessing because I know what they've meant
- 18:34Speaker 9: to Texas women's basketball. But I also know what they
- 18:37Speaker 9: meant to.
- 18:40Speaker 4: The game. Those are lifers.
- 18:43Speaker 9: Those are people that have invested their entire life and
- 18:46Speaker 9: careers into women's basketball. Like there's some young folks up
- 18:50Speaker 9: here they don't understand I do.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Like I get it.
- 18:55Speaker 9: I've seen it firsthand. Is this is my life, and
- 19:01Speaker 9: I've seen it up close and in person. To know
- 19:04Speaker 9: the domination that coach Conrad had in the Southwest Conference days,
- 19:09Speaker 9: I'm embarrassed. I can't recall the number, but it's one
- 19:12Speaker 9: hundred and some odd, crazy number eighty something games of
- 19:16Speaker 9: consecutive conference victories. So I know the history and the
- 19:22Speaker 9: tradition at Texas and you know, like I said, that
- 19:25Speaker 9: banner hangs in there, that thirty four and oh national
- 19:28Speaker 9: championship banner hangs in my practice facility. The two thousand
- 19:33Speaker 9: and three, the last time they've been in an NCAA tournament.
- 19:36Speaker 9: It hangs in my practice facility. So it's a it's
- 19:41Speaker 9: a tremendous responsibility for me to be entrusted with the
- 19:45Speaker 9: keys to the program. But it's also why I wanted
- 19:50Speaker 9: the job, because my vision is their vision. And my
- 19:56Speaker 9: vision was to come into the office and remember I
- 19:58Speaker 9: took it during COVID, so it was jacked up bad.
- 20:04Speaker 9: But my vision was to come in after a game
- 20:06Speaker 9: the next morning and have coffee and have Coach Conrad
- 20:08Speaker 9: come down from her office and talk about the game
- 20:11Speaker 9: with me. Like I embraced that those moments. And so
- 20:16Speaker 9: coach is around a lot, and I love that. I
- 20:18Speaker 9: love having her around, Like it means a lot to
- 20:22Speaker 9: me that she takes enough time out of her day
- 20:24Speaker 9: or you know where she is right now. I mean,
- 20:26Speaker 9: she's a hell of a golfer, and you know that
- 20:29Speaker 9: she would take that time to come by practice, hang out,
- 20:32Speaker 9: be around Like I love that, Like that's my vision
- 20:36Speaker 9: when I took the job.
- 20:37Speaker 4: I wanted to be around her.
- 20:39Speaker 9: I wanted her to be around our program, and so
- 20:44Speaker 9: you know, she was there when we beat Baylor back
- 20:47Speaker 9: in my second year, we beat them to win the
- 20:50Speaker 9: Big twelve championship tournament game.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Again, one of the reasons they probably hired me was to.
- 20:58Speaker 9: Catch up to them and be them and win a championship,
- 21:01Speaker 9: and we did that pretty quick. And then to now
- 21:04Speaker 9: be where we are now in the NCAA Final Four,
- 21:09Speaker 9: I'm really you know again, I'm honored to be their coach,
- 21:12Speaker 9: but I'm really proud of what we've been able to
- 21:14Speaker 9: accomplish in a short period of time. It's been twenty
- 21:20Speaker 9: two years since they've been in the Final four. It
- 21:22Speaker 9: had been twenty two years since they won a conference championship,
- 21:25Speaker 9: and we won four.
- 21:26Speaker 4: And five years.
- 21:27Speaker 9: So I have a great deal of respect and admiration
- 21:30Speaker 9: for those three because to me, they are Texas women's
- 21:34Speaker 9: basketball and I love being around them. They're just wonderful,
- 21:39Speaker 9: wonderful people.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone. All right,
- 21:43Speaker 1: when we come back, we're back on the rails with
- 21:45Speaker 1: the Craig Way Show. When we are back, we'll talk
- 21:48Speaker 1: inconceivable it's a Florida Man Friday.
- 21:50Speaker 2: You're not going to miss it.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Some of the craziest stories from around the state coming
- 21:55Speaker 1: up next on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. The zone
- 22:00Speaker 1: inconceivable On a Florida Man Friday on Sports Radio AM
- 22:05Speaker 1: thirteen hundred. The zone is inconceivable that all of our
- 22:10Speaker 1: equator works all of the time. Maybe all right, let's
- 22:14Speaker 1: talk Florida Man or Friday and we will start here. Okay,
- 22:20Speaker 1: so you probably have, at some point or another taken
- 22:24Speaker 1: a test drive. I think all of us is one
- 22:26Speaker 1: point or another, have bought a new car, taken it
- 22:29Speaker 1: on a little joy cruise. Well, this Florida man is
- 22:32Speaker 1: accused of stealing a cyber truck during a test drive
- 22:37Speaker 1: and returning it to the dealership a couple days later.
- 22:40Speaker 1: You would think that if you're going to make some
- 22:42Speaker 1: sort of run on a cybertruck one hundred thousand dollars vehicle,
- 22:46Speaker 1: that you probably wouldn't bring it back.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Not the case.
- 22:49Speaker 1: This Florida man is accused of stealing a cyber truck
- 22:51Speaker 1: during a test drive last month. Then we're turning it
- 22:54Speaker 1: to the dealership at a later date to retrieve his belongings.
- 22:57Speaker 1: According to the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Dexter Smith and allegedly
- 23:02Speaker 1: went to the Tesla dealership in Tampa, Florida, on March
- 23:06Speaker 1: twenty six to test drive a cyber truck cyber Beast.
- 23:10Speaker 2: After meeting with the salesperson.
- 23:12Speaker 1: According to the criminal affort, David Smith then got the
- 23:15Speaker 1: sales associate or gave the sales associate his driver's license,
- 23:18Speaker 1: which was confirmed to be his, and then signed a
- 23:21Speaker 1: test drive agreement to return the truck to the dealership
- 23:23Speaker 1: within thirty minutes, which he did not do. The attempt
- 23:28Speaker 1: to reach Smith him through the number he wrote on
- 23:32Speaker 1: the test drive agreement were unsuccessful. You got to come
- 23:35Speaker 1: up with a better way to do things, except, you know,
- 23:37Speaker 1: calling the guy. The sales associate also emailed him demanding
- 23:40Speaker 1: the return of the cyber truck. A different sales associate
- 23:45Speaker 1: used a geolocation tracking to locate the truck, told deputies
- 23:49Speaker 1: he drove into a home depot, parked, went inside the store.
- 23:53Speaker 1: The affid David state, so did they hunt the man
- 23:55Speaker 1: down and appear? So he returned to the Tesla dealership
- 23:59Speaker 1: on Tuesday to achieve some of his items that he left.
- 24:02Speaker 1: He was arrested at the business and while being searched up,
- 24:05Speaker 1: he said they found five credit cards.
- 24:08Speaker 2: With five different names.
- 24:10Speaker 1: That he's charged with grand theft of more than one
- 24:12Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars and a unlawful an unlawful possession of
- 24:18Speaker 1: identic personal identification. But can you imagine you're you steal
- 24:22Speaker 1: a one hundred thousand dollars truck and then you have
- 24:26Speaker 1: to go back to pick up what a credit card?
- 24:29Speaker 1: Pick up your license? Come on, man, you gotta be
- 24:32Speaker 1: smarter than that. Dumb criminals.
- 24:34Speaker 2: All right?
- 24:35Speaker 1: Uh, let's hear this story of Florida man's visit to
- 24:38Speaker 1: Grand Slam Collaptibles to check out the sports memorabilia.
- 24:42Speaker 2: All right, let's hear this one.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Florida man is accused after falling asleep and a taco
- 24:48Speaker 1: bell drive through. He then woke up and hit a
- 24:51Speaker 1: part card. This actually happened to a coworker of mine
- 24:53Speaker 1: one time. I think we were getting breakfast tacos for
- 24:56Speaker 1: the morning show, and I think somebody ran into the
- 24:59Speaker 1: back of her car.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Tacoplink. Here's the story.
- 25:03Speaker 1: A man was arrested after deputy say they found him
- 25:05Speaker 1: under the influence of a controlled substance when he fell
- 25:08Speaker 1: asleep in the drive through of a Taco Bell and
- 25:11Speaker 1: crashed into a parked car when he woke up. According
- 25:15Speaker 1: to the County Sheriff's office, a concern citizen called nine
- 25:18Speaker 1: to one one Tuesday about the reckless driver. The caller
- 25:21Speaker 1: told deputies he followed the man to a Taco Bell,
- 25:23Speaker 1: where the driver fell asleep in the drive through while
- 25:26Speaker 1: waiting for his order. After waking up and getting his food,
- 25:30Speaker 1: deputy said the driver was later identified as a James
- 25:34Speaker 1: Christopher Powell tried to leave the parking lot but struck
- 25:37Speaker 1: another parked vehicle. He was arrested for dy and driving
- 25:41Speaker 1: under the influence. But you know, we've all been there.
- 25:44Speaker 1: After maybe a late night, you go to the bars,
- 25:47Speaker 1: you bounce around a little bit, and then you decide
- 25:49Speaker 1: to go to a taco Bell for that late night snack.
- 25:52Speaker 2: You gotta be careful.
- 25:53Speaker 1: That's really what this story tells us is you have
- 25:56Speaker 1: to be careful in those parking lots because you never
- 25:59Speaker 1: know what is going to happen. You got to keep
- 26:03Speaker 1: your head on a swivel. You don't want to end
- 26:05Speaker 1: up getting rear ended from behind by a Florida man
- 26:10Speaker 1: in his car.
- 26:11Speaker 2: And a Taco Bell drive through.
- 26:12Speaker 1: All right, when we come back, we will talk more
- 26:15Speaker 1: college basketball as the men's Final Four begins in San Antonio,
- 26:20Speaker 1: Florida and Alburn, Houston and Duke. Is it inconceivable that
- 26:26Speaker 1: we have an old man Final four? Or are the
- 26:30Speaker 1: young guys gonna get it? Will Cooper Flagg, the future
- 26:33Speaker 1: number one overall pick in the NBA lead his team
- 26:36Speaker 1: to a title? Is it inconceivable for Auburn to get
- 26:39Speaker 1: a national championship? Or Houston trying to get there first?
- 26:43Speaker 1: All that happening next, as we wrap up our one
- 26:46Speaker 1: of the Craigway Show on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
- 26:49Speaker 1: The Zone of Course Radio AM thirteen hundred. The Zone
- 26:54Speaker 1: is always exciting when Andreson Will fills in on the Zone,
- 27:00Speaker 1: don't forget tonight Final four action on ninety eight one
- 27:04Speaker 1: KVET FM. Texas women take on South Carolina. Craig Way
- 27:08Speaker 1: will be on the call. We'll have Craig on the
- 27:11Speaker 1: show in the four o'clock hour four seventeen, Craig joins
- 27:14Speaker 1: the program to talk Texas women's basketball as well as
- 27:19Speaker 1: Texas baseball. Happening tonight as the Longhorns take on one
- 27:24Speaker 1: of the best teams in the SEC. That game played
- 27:28Speaker 1: on one oh three one, Austin's eighty station six to
- 27:32Speaker 1: fifteen air times six thirty first pitch as the Georgia
- 27:36Speaker 1: Bulldogs come to town in a budding rival We talked
- 27:40Speaker 1: to Craig yesterday about it a little bit that you
- 27:42Speaker 1: have teams in the SEC now in Texas and Georgia
- 27:46Speaker 1: that are good in multiple sports, nationally recognized in multiple sports,
- 27:51Speaker 1: which leads to an easy line in to have big
- 27:56Speaker 1: rivalries and hopefully fun ones for the fans. Those games
- 28:00Speaker 1: played this weekend at the Dish. Some of the best
- 28:03Speaker 1: baseball hopefully in the SEC played this weekend in Austin.
- 28:07Speaker 1: All Right, So we have two coaches winning Coach of
- 28:11Speaker 1: the Year, which kind of feels a little redundant, right,
- 28:15Speaker 1: You don't want to have two coaches win the Coach
- 28:17Speaker 1: of the Year. But in this case, I think we
- 28:20Speaker 1: have to make an exception in this season with what
- 28:24Speaker 1: Bruce Pearl did at Auburn and what Rick Patino did
- 28:27Speaker 1: at Saint John's, I think both those teams and both
- 28:30Speaker 1: those coaches deserve the accolade.
- 28:32Speaker 10: Now.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Bruce Pearl turned around in Auburn program that might be
- 28:36Speaker 1: having their best season maybe ever, and Rick Patino ushered
- 28:42Speaker 1: one of the fastest turnarounds in Division one basketball history.
- 28:46Speaker 1: The success has led to the first tie in the
- 28:49Speaker 1: fifty eight years of the Associated Press Coaches Coach of
- 28:54Speaker 1: the Year Award. Now Pearl and Patino both received twenty
- 28:58Speaker 1: votes on Friday, that is ballot from the National Media
- 29:02Speaker 1: Pale Panel. It Also receiving votes were Tom Izzo, Drake's
- 29:08Speaker 1: Bell McCollum, You See, San Diego's Eric Olin pat Kesey
- 29:15Speaker 1: won got some awards. All coaches who were awarded, but
- 29:19Speaker 1: Patino in his first season at Saint John's. It's the
- 29:24Speaker 1: sixth time that Big East coach has won it now.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Shaka Smart won the award two years ago. Patino was
- 29:30Speaker 1: hiring twenty twenty three the Red Storm at the time
- 29:34Speaker 1: mediocre at best. Saint John's hadn't been to the NCAA
- 29:39Speaker 1: Tournament since twenty nineteen. They've been sporadic since the late nineties.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Patino led Saint John's to twenty wins in his first
- 29:47Speaker 1: season and got them now into national providence. They won
- 29:52Speaker 1: the regular season, going eighteen to two. They also took
- 29:55Speaker 1: home its first Big East title since the year two thousand,
- 29:59Speaker 1: so over a quarter of a century. First time that
- 30:02Speaker 1: Saint John's wins it, which makes a lot of sense
- 30:05Speaker 1: for him to win the Coach of the Year, but
- 30:06Speaker 1: he split the award with Bruce Pearl. The Tigers had
- 30:10Speaker 1: not been to the NCAA Tournament in over twenty years
- 30:13Speaker 1: since two thousand and three. Pearl got them back into
- 30:16Speaker 1: the bracket in his fourth season. Alburn took a huge
- 30:19Speaker 1: leap the first trip to the Final four in twenty nineteen.
- 30:23Speaker 1: They've been unstoppable this year. Pearl joins Cliff Ellis in
- 30:27Speaker 1: the ninety nine season as the only Alburn coaches to
- 30:29Speaker 1: win the Coach of the Year award from men's basketball.
- 30:32Speaker 1: He's the first SEC coach to win the award since
- 30:35Speaker 1: Kyle Pari did it ten years ago. So yeah, it's
- 30:40Speaker 1: great national Coach of the year as well. With Rick
- 30:43Speaker 1: Patina another the Player of the Year, this one comes
- 30:46Speaker 1: as no shock. It was Cooper Flagg, who was by
- 30:51Speaker 1: far the best freshman this season. He won the award
- 30:57Speaker 1: in his only season probably at the Universe. He is
- 31:03Speaker 1: by all means a child eighteen years old, just turn eighteen.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Successful season, he has set himself up to be the
- 31:12Speaker 1: number one overall pick in this year's NBA Draft. He's
- 31:17Speaker 1: the fourth freshman to win the award in the sixty
- 31:20Speaker 1: four year history of the award. And it's weird to
- 31:24Speaker 1: say that the best American born player might be from
- 31:27Speaker 1: the state of Maine, because you don't really think about
- 31:30Speaker 1: Maine as a state that is producing a ton of
- 31:33Speaker 1: nationally recognized talent. But he is I think the first
- 31:38Speaker 1: player since I think he might be the first player
- 31:42Speaker 1: from the state of Maine. He has won the two
- 31:45Speaker 1: man race against auburns Johnny Broom. Both players were unanimous
- 31:50Speaker 1: First Team All Americans this season. There are only two
- 31:53Speaker 1: players to receive Player of the Year of votes. Flag
- 31:56Speaker 1: got forty one of the sixty one first players votes.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Now Flag joins Duke Sion Williamson, Anthony Davis, and of
- 32:04Speaker 1: course for Texas's Kevin Durant as freshman to win the award.
- 32:08Speaker 1: The fun fact about those players Zion number one overall pick,
- 32:12Speaker 1: Anthony Davis number one overall pick Kevin Durant number two,
- 32:16Speaker 1: So winning this award all but guarantees that Cooper Flagg
- 32:19Speaker 1: ends up being a top two pick in this year's
- 32:23Speaker 1: NBA draft. Very very cool stuff. Duke plays this weekend
- 32:29Speaker 1: against Houston at seven point forty in the men's Final four,
- 32:33Speaker 1: and it'll be exciting Auburn and Florida five PM and
- 32:36Speaker 1: SEC matchup in Houston and Duke the best team out
- 32:39Speaker 1: of the Big Ten or I'm sorry, the Big Twelve
- 32:43Speaker 1: and the best team out of the ACC matching up
- 32:46Speaker 1: in the final four. Now, Juan Roberts, who's a defensive
- 32:53Speaker 1: stoppers senior for the University of Houston, got asked about
- 32:56Speaker 1: this Duke team if this might be the best team
- 32:58Speaker 1: of his team the Cougars have seen this season.
- 33:01Speaker 5: On paper, Yeah, but we've seen that a lot, and
- 33:05Speaker 5: especially when we played against Auburn, Alabama, those teams, Texas Tech, Arizona.
- 33:11Speaker 5: But now I feel like our defense is what gets
- 33:14Speaker 5: its going. So on paper yet they're pretty good, but
- 33:17Speaker 5: I feel like, you know, mostly come in with that
- 33:19Speaker 5: defense mentality.
- 33:21Speaker 4: I'm just gonna be a different ball game.
- 33:23Speaker 1: No, obviously, it's two of the best teams in college
- 33:26Speaker 1: basketball facing off against each other, but it is something
- 33:29Speaker 1: to be said for the Big Twelve, which last year
- 33:31Speaker 1: I think most people considered one of the best basketball
- 33:34Speaker 1: conferences in the league, and the sport this year. However,
- 33:39Speaker 1: the way that Houston ran through the Big Twelve, I
- 33:42Speaker 1: think that that limited the way that people talked about
- 33:45Speaker 1: that conference, where As the SEC it was a dogfight
- 33:48Speaker 1: every single night between the best teams in the conference.
- 33:53Speaker 1: I wonder if because of that, because of the Alburns
- 33:58Speaker 1: and the Floridas and the Alabamas of the world, that
- 34:01Speaker 1: Duke did very quickly dismantled. I wonder if because of
- 34:05Speaker 1: how competitive the top to the bottom of the SEC
- 34:09Speaker 1: was this year, then it gave some teams and gave
- 34:12Speaker 1: the conference a little bit more of an edge. Whereas
- 34:15Speaker 1: the Big Twelve is a very good basketball conference with
- 34:18Speaker 1: Arizona with obviously Houston, with Texas Tech, but it doesn't
- 34:22Speaker 1: get that same recognition because of how quickly Calvin Sampson
- 34:28Speaker 1: and his team absolutely dismantled the conference. Now, again we
- 34:33Speaker 1: said at the beginning of the show, this is going
- 34:36Speaker 1: to be a battle between Houston and Duke of different
- 34:40Speaker 1: styles of building a team. We go through college football
- 34:43Speaker 1: all the time, the teams that build culture versus going
- 34:45Speaker 1: to the transfer portal. Now Duke doesn't necessarily go into
- 34:47Speaker 1: the transfer portal, but they are a team that is
- 34:50Speaker 1: led by a guy who's going to be a one
- 34:52Speaker 1: and done in Cooper Flagg, whereas Houston is led by
- 34:55Speaker 1: a core group of older talent. Which way do you
- 34:59Speaker 1: win in college basketball? The women's side of things, It's
- 35:03Speaker 1: pretty much been set.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Up from the start.
- 35:05Speaker 1: If you have a core group of players who have
- 35:07Speaker 1: played together multiple tournaments year over year over year, those
- 35:11Speaker 1: teams tend to do better in the tournament. Whereas a
- 35:16Speaker 1: team like Houston who has gotten their scars going down
- 35:20Speaker 1: the same type of path, can you build a program
- 35:24Speaker 1: to win year over year over year after struggling kind
- 35:27Speaker 1: of getting some of those playoff loss lumps, those tournament
- 35:30Speaker 1: lost lumps. Now, Houston has had plenty of those. We'll
- 35:33Speaker 1: see if they can get the job done against Duke
- 35:36Speaker 1: one and done's versus seniors. Who wins We will see
- 35:40Speaker 1: on Saturday, all right, when we come back. Texas baseball
- 35:43Speaker 1: play tonight against Georgia. Our man Mike carbar Harge is
- 35:47Speaker 1: on the call, as well as a David Salzman. That
- 35:53Speaker 1: will be happening on one O three one, Austin's eighty station.
- 35:58Speaker 1: We'll talk baseball coming aback with a major announcement. Major
- 36:03Speaker 1: announcement twelve seasons with the University of Texas, twenty four
- 36:08Speaker 1: seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, and he will be
- 36:13Speaker 1: the one that breaks the news to you if you
- 36:15Speaker 1: haven't heard already. Also, Steve Sarkejian joins the program or
- 36:19Speaker 1: does enjoy the program talk to Chris Sims Unbuttoned and
- 36:22Speaker 1: NBC Football podcast about quin viewers and Arch Manning, And
- 36:27Speaker 1: I thought you did a very good job, an excellent
- 36:30Speaker 1: job of selling not only Arch and what he does
- 36:33Speaker 1: best when it comes to the Texas Longhorns and what
- 36:37Speaker 1: he does best when it comes to the way that
- 36:41Speaker 1: he's leading the program, but I think he did a
- 36:45Speaker 1: really good job of kind of giving us the intangibles
- 36:48Speaker 1: of what goes into that as well. So but we'll
- 36:50Speaker 1: start here Texas Baseball Tonight on one oh three one,
- 36:54Speaker 1: our guy, Mike carbol Harges will be on the call
- 36:57Speaker 1: with David Salzman first pitch six fifteen, six thirty for
- 37:05Speaker 1: Evertimes six fifteen, first pitch six thirty, one oh three
- 37:07Speaker 1: to one your home for Texas Baseball. But he spoke
- 37:10Speaker 1: yesterday at length to the media, gearing up for this weekend.
- 37:16Speaker 11: Looking forward to the weekend, excited to get back in
- 37:18Speaker 11: conference play and playing a great team this weekend, a
- 37:23Speaker 11: lot of power. Hopefully the rain will stay away for
- 37:26Speaker 11: the most part and have some big crowds and see
- 37:28Speaker 11: if we can't put together good weekend.
- 37:33Speaker 1: And this Longhorns team is going to be one of
- 37:38Speaker 1: the best. I think it's gonna this is a great
- 37:40Speaker 1: team that is one of the best in the SEC.
- 37:44Speaker 1: But George has been really good too, continuing to rack
- 37:47Speaker 1: up wins in the Southeastern Conference. What makes this Georgia
- 37:51Speaker 1: team so good?
- 37:52Speaker 11: Coach super talented, very very very physical. When they swing,
- 37:58Speaker 11: they hit the ball. When they hit it, they hit
- 38:00Speaker 11: it super hard and super far, so not a lot
- 38:04Speaker 11: of the bunt game. You know, they'll steal some there's
- 38:06Speaker 11: some guys on their team. They'll steal some bases, but
- 38:09Speaker 11: they're literally built around power and which a lot of
- 38:14Speaker 11: our teams in this league are. But they're really really
- 38:17Speaker 11: good at it. And then, uh, you know they haven't
- 38:20Speaker 11: they're they're starting. Pitching hasn't been awesome, but they've the
- 38:24Speaker 11: bullpen has been amazing, and they've flipped some guys from
- 38:27Speaker 11: the bullpen into the rotation. Wes Johnson has been one
- 38:30Speaker 11: of the better pitching coaches in our not just college baseball,
- 38:33Speaker 11: but in our sport for a really long time. And
- 38:36Speaker 11: and so you know, you know they're gonna figure that
- 38:39Speaker 11: part out and in which they have and so so yeah,
- 38:43Speaker 11: it's a national championship contender. I think they're mony games,
- 38:48Speaker 11: you know, and we feel good about our team too.
- 38:50Speaker 8: And it's got to play with baseball.
- 38:52Speaker 1: There's a lot of teams that are national championship contenders
- 38:54Speaker 1: in the SEC twenty nine to two on the season,
- 38:57Speaker 1: eight and one in conference. These Georgia Bulldogs are ready
- 39:02Speaker 1: to play, and you wonder if the bark is worse
- 39:06Speaker 1: than the bite though for some of these wins that
- 39:09Speaker 1: they had this season. So over the past week, the
- 39:13Speaker 1: Long Horns lost a tough one to the Texas State
- 39:17Speaker 1: Bobcats at dishfalk Field, five three loss that saw a
- 39:22Speaker 1: lot of pitchers do a good job. Kate Bing pitched
- 39:26Speaker 1: really well six and one thirds innings. Could we see
- 39:29Speaker 1: any of those pitchers who performed on Tuesday night, Could
- 39:33Speaker 1: we see any of them in this weekend's matches.
- 39:36Speaker 11: I wouldn't imagine Bing would be much a part of it,
- 39:39Speaker 11: if at all. I think part of the reason he
- 39:41Speaker 11: was able to have success Tuesday is we took him
- 39:44Speaker 11: with us to Missouri, but we didn't have him on
- 39:45Speaker 11: the active roster, so he could throw a bullpen and
- 39:47Speaker 11: kind of prepare to be a staying routine to be
- 39:50Speaker 11: a starting pitcher.
- 39:51Speaker 8: So I don't imagine he would.
- 39:53Speaker 11: Be a part of it with this wait and see
- 39:55Speaker 11: before we announce a roster for tomorrow the game tomorrow,
- 39:58Speaker 11: Flores will certainly be available.
- 40:01Speaker 8: Those guys did a nice job on Tuesday.
- 40:02Speaker 1: So do you have any idea what your pitching rotation
- 40:05Speaker 1: will look like? Now we've joked at not at length
- 40:09Speaker 1: about how you kind of have any idea.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Saturday your Friday and Saturday starters.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Sunday will always be a TBD because at that point
- 40:17Speaker 1: you need to decide if you're going to try to
- 40:18Speaker 1: win the series, where if you've already won the series,
- 40:21Speaker 1: you want to give some guys some extra looks, some
- 40:23Speaker 1: extra mountain time. Do you have any idea what that
- 40:25Speaker 1: rotation will look like?
- 40:27Speaker 11: It'd be Sam, Spencer and Harrison and then TBA after that.
- 40:31Speaker 11: I'd love to be able to keep Ruby right where
- 40:33Speaker 11: he is, but I know we're trying to win championships
- 40:37Speaker 11: for sure, But at the same time, We're also trying
- 40:40Speaker 11: to get fifteen sixteen wins in this conference, which normally
- 40:44Speaker 11: puts you in a postseason. So with our injuries and
- 40:47Speaker 11: different things that have happened, you got to look at
- 40:50Speaker 11: things a little. You have to take everything into account
- 40:53Speaker 11: when you're trying to get to that win mark and
- 40:56Speaker 11: playing some of these teams that are super teams like
- 40:59Speaker 11: at Georgia.
- 41:00Speaker 8: So we'll just see how they go.
- 41:02Speaker 10: Game the game.
- 41:02Speaker 1: You got to think back to two weeks ago when
- 41:04Speaker 1: LSU came to town in the long runs, lose Friday,
- 41:06Speaker 1: then bounce back Saturday and Sunday and perform very very well,
- 41:10Speaker 1: winning that first SEC through a series at dishpot Field
- 41:16Speaker 1: and their inaugural year in the conference.
- 41:18Speaker 2: But you mentioned the injuries.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Now Max Belue injures his thumb out for a long
- 41:24Speaker 1: period of time. Might be out the season, could be
- 41:26Speaker 1: out the whole regular season, maybe some of the playoffs
- 41:28Speaker 1: where he could be back for the playoffs. In the
- 41:30Speaker 1: first full week without Max belou What are your plans
- 41:34Speaker 1: for left field in the offense, coach, I.
- 41:36Speaker 11: Think you probably saw it the other night, you know,
- 41:38Speaker 11: I mean, we don't have We got to wait and
- 41:40Speaker 11: see how Rodriguez feels he's kind of day to day.
- 41:43Speaker 8: Don't know if he'll be available this weekend.
- 41:45Speaker 11: I would think I'll have him on the roster just
- 41:48Speaker 11: because he can go do other things. He can play defense,
- 41:50Speaker 11: he could play the outfield, He could play third base
- 41:52Speaker 11: if he had to do it.
- 41:53Speaker 8: He could run bases.
- 41:55Speaker 11: But in terms of you know, Tommy will stay in
- 41:57Speaker 11: right field and then left field will just kind of
- 42:01Speaker 11: determine what the matchups are. I was really excited about
- 42:05Speaker 11: Gumbo or Jaden to Planted the other night. He you know,
- 42:09Speaker 11: if he can get on bass right and he's a
- 42:11Speaker 11: good bonner. He actually swung the bat really well against
- 42:15Speaker 11: our pitching in the fall, and he had a great
- 42:18Speaker 11: swing the other night in the night, ending off a
- 42:20Speaker 11: good pitcher. So that was encouraging because when he gets
- 42:23Speaker 11: on base, you know, then especially if him and Farmer
- 42:25Speaker 11: are back to bat, then you got guys that can
- 42:27Speaker 11: run and do some things on the bases. So certainly
- 42:30Speaker 11: got to find ways to score runs differently. You know,
- 42:34Speaker 11: I don't think anybody on our bench is going to
- 42:35Speaker 11: bring the dynamic power that and the extra base hit
- 42:39Speaker 11: stuff that Max brings, So we have to find a
- 42:42Speaker 11: way to play different kind offense in those spots.
- 42:45Speaker 1: So Max Below a left handed batter and Adrian Rodriguez
- 42:48Speaker 1: was a left handed batter as well. Now Rodriguez might
- 42:50Speaker 1: be able to come back for this weekend series, but
- 42:54Speaker 1: how important is it to try to find another lefty
- 42:58Speaker 1: in this lineup?
- 42:59Speaker 11: I mean, I definitely overthink it to the point because
- 43:01Speaker 11: I and I really, uh our goal and hopefully you'll
- 43:05Speaker 11: look up here next year or the year after and
- 43:07Speaker 11: you'll have a team full of left and switch hand
- 43:09Speaker 11: and switch hitters and right handed hitters where we can
- 43:11Speaker 11: have really good balance and and make it tough on
- 43:13Speaker 11: the other team. But right now it is what it is.
- 43:17Speaker 11: Our rosters, our roster. So he can't really I can't remember.
- 43:21Speaker 11: I can't remember the last time I rode the lineup
- 43:23Speaker 11: and had like five six left right handed hitters in
- 43:25Speaker 11: a row. But that's where our team is, and so
- 43:29Speaker 11: you don't have a choice, you don't have a problem.
- 43:30Speaker 11: So uh, it is what it is. And you got
- 43:34Speaker 11: you know, Steward over there. Uh he had he put
- 43:37Speaker 11: he put together good at bats against Missouri both right
- 43:40Speaker 11: hand left handed pitchers. He stays on the balls, and
- 43:44Speaker 11: most left handed hitters that handle left handed pitching are
- 43:46Speaker 11: the ones that can stay on the baseball and don't
- 43:48Speaker 11: pull off the ball. He's not gonna run, you know,
- 43:51Speaker 11: run base as much, but uh, he can put together
- 43:54Speaker 11: good at bats and get on base. So I think
- 43:56Speaker 11: you could see him in there. Uh, we just don't
- 43:58Speaker 11: have that man. I mean the day took the job,
- 44:00Speaker 11: there was one left handed hitter in the entire program.
- 44:02Speaker 11: You know, it's Max, you know, so this summer, you
- 44:06Speaker 11: know that'll be That's a big That's always a big
- 44:08Speaker 11: focus for us in recruiting is to have balance in
- 44:12Speaker 11: that recruit in every recruiting class.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you want to go try to find guys who
- 44:15Speaker 1: can yeah obviously be switch hitters, but also bring power
- 44:19Speaker 1: and bring a different look when you are facing off
- 44:23Speaker 1: some against some of the best pitchers in college baseball. Finally,
- 44:27Speaker 1: how much of a competitive advantage is it when your
- 44:30Speaker 1: first two series, two of your first three series, I
- 44:33Speaker 1: should say, are at home against two of the best teams.
- 44:35Speaker 1: How big of a competitive advantage is it to face
- 44:38Speaker 1: off against LSU and Georgia at home?
- 44:40Speaker 11: I mean, it's always helpful to play in front of
- 44:41Speaker 11: your own fans. You know, this playing service is different
- 44:45Speaker 11: than most. I think anytime you're at home in the SEC,
- 44:50Speaker 11: it's you know, it's a good thing. But at the
- 44:54Speaker 11: end of the day, these teams are super talented. Georgia's
- 44:56Speaker 11: gone on the road. They swept a series at Florida,
- 44:58Speaker 11: I think, or one of a series at Florida. Great team,
- 45:01Speaker 11: great program, great players. So hopefully our fans will come
- 45:06Speaker 11: out and make it a great atmosphere. The problem is
- 45:10Speaker 11: that there's so many great atmospheres that, like when we
- 45:13Speaker 11: went to Starkville. Once you do that, you get used
- 45:15Speaker 11: to playing it and so it doesn't spook you, which
- 45:17Speaker 11: is why we need to get to fifteen wins. Because
- 45:19Speaker 11: once you get through this league and put yourself in
- 45:23Speaker 11: a postseason, even if you have to play a regional
- 45:25Speaker 11: on the road or a super regional on the road,
- 45:28Speaker 11: nothing speaks you because you've been through the best of
- 45:31Speaker 11: the best.
- 45:31Speaker 1: The best of the best, one of the best teams
- 45:34Speaker 1: in college baseball coming to the dish tonight. You can
- 45:36Speaker 1: hear the game on one oh three one, Austin's eighty
- 45:41Speaker 1: Station six to fifteen, ERA Time six thirty First Pitch
- 45:44Speaker 1: Mike Harball, Harg and David saltzmen on the call as
- 45:48Speaker 1: well for that one. This is going to be a
- 45:51Speaker 1: great game. I'm excited for it. I can't wait to
- 45:54Speaker 1: hear it tonight. But it also got to keep an
- 45:57Speaker 1: eye on Texas women as they take on South Line
- 46:00Speaker 1: in the women's Final four five to forty five. Airtime
- 46:03Speaker 1: six pm tip on ninety eight one KVET FM. That's
- 46:07Speaker 1: where you can hear tonight's Final four matchup. Speaking of basketball,
- 46:11Speaker 1: Bill Shoning, the voice of the Spurs, coming on, talking
- 46:15Speaker 1: big news out of San Antonio. All coming up next
- 46:18Speaker 1: on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone, Curry.
- 46:22Speaker 12: Weill pro shortings picked off for the twenty fifteen ten
- 46:26Speaker 12: five Time to into the XEL touchdown.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Cory Redding on to the fun court.
- 46:32Speaker 13: We'll drive it inside, mon all the way in left
- 46:34Speaker 13: test slam.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Wow mono let us high yojo do hoo doo he
- 46:39Speaker 2: yojo so well.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. And you know
- 46:44Speaker 1: this man for his twelve seasons with the Long Horns
- 46:48Speaker 1: and his twenty four seasons with the San Antonio Spurs.
- 46:51Speaker 1: It's Bill Shoning and Bill, Today's a very special day.
- 46:54Speaker 1: It's one of those days where we get to sing songs.
- 46:56Speaker 1: And get off the cake and sing. He's a jolly
- 46:59Speaker 1: good fella. So congratulations you're on your announcement on retiring
- 47:03Speaker 1: after over two decades in San Antonio.
- 47:06Speaker 13: Bill, Yeah, over four decades on the air. I appreciate
- 47:09Speaker 13: that a great deal. And Andrew, thanks very much. It's been
- 47:12Speaker 13: an amazing day. The Spurs issue to press release this morning.
- 47:15Speaker 13: The San Antonio Express News did a story and I
- 47:17Speaker 13: posted it on Facebook, and I've been just inundated all
- 47:20Speaker 13: day long from really all over the country. I just
- 47:22Speaker 13: got a phone call from France, so it's really cool.
- 47:27Speaker 13: You know, going into the season, I had a feeling
- 47:29Speaker 13: that might be my last year. Is the last year
- 47:31Speaker 13: my contract. I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep going.
- 47:33Speaker 13: I feel great. I'm sixty six years old. I love
- 47:36Speaker 13: what I do. I have a passion for it. But
- 47:38Speaker 13: my wife's just retired and she's done a very good
- 47:40Speaker 13: job taking care of the finances. And we really like
- 47:44Speaker 13: to travel, you know, both of us, so we got
- 47:46Speaker 13: some traveling ahead.
- 47:47Speaker 4: You know.
- 47:47Speaker 13: I've got a passion for music, so that'll be something
- 47:49Speaker 13: I'm sure i'll do. I want to help out young broadcasters.
- 47:52Speaker 13: I'm involved in a mentorship program with a national sports
- 47:55Speaker 13: media association out of Carolina. So I'm going to help
- 47:58Speaker 13: out some young college broadcasters with their rising play by
- 48:01Speaker 13: play careers. And I love to hike. You know, we're
- 48:04Speaker 13: gonna hit national parks this summer, so I got a
- 48:07Speaker 13: lot on my plate. And then I'm not going to
- 48:08Speaker 13: hang the mic up completely. Andrew. I think that you know,
- 48:11Speaker 13: I've really missed doing baseball and football. So I'm hoping
- 48:14Speaker 13: that I get a few opportunities just in fill in
- 48:16Speaker 13: filling opportunities here and there to do some work, not
- 48:18Speaker 13: a full time basis at all, but get back to
- 48:20Speaker 13: doing some football and baseball as well.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Well.
- 48:22Speaker 1: First off, if you don't look at day over fifty five, Bill,
- 48:24Speaker 1: I just got to give you the credit there. Second,
- 48:26Speaker 1: I appreciate that the thing that caught my attention, and
- 48:29Speaker 1: because I listened to you on the flagship WAI where
- 48:32Speaker 1: you can hear all the Spurs games you've heard Bill
- 48:34Speaker 1: for twenty years. But the thing that caught my attention
- 48:38Speaker 1: is giving back to the young guys, because as a
- 48:40Speaker 1: young broadcaster, I can tell you from experience, it's hard
- 48:43Speaker 1: to find guys who want to give their time. So
- 48:45Speaker 1: for you to say Hey, I'm going to spend a
- 48:47Speaker 1: little bit of time. I'm going to give it a
- 48:48Speaker 1: little bit back is huge. I think it's a it's
- 48:50Speaker 1: a real testament to the type of guy you are,
- 48:52Speaker 1: Bill Well.
- 48:53Speaker 13: I appreciate that, but you know, I started out in
- 48:55Speaker 13: small market radio, Andrew. I did not have anything handed
- 48:57Speaker 13: to me. You know, I had to pay some dues
- 48:59Speaker 13: in this business. That's okay, that's the way it works,
- 49:01Speaker 13: and everybody has to start at the bottom. And there
- 49:03Speaker 13: have been a lot of successful guys that started at
- 49:05Speaker 13: the bottom. And I just never forgot those ten years
- 49:07Speaker 13: that I kind of labored in small market radio. You know,
- 49:10Speaker 13: you hear the term now these days embrace the grind. Well,
- 49:12Speaker 13: it really was a grind because we were't making a
- 49:15Speaker 13: lot of money. I was doing news, spending records, doing
- 49:17Speaker 13: whatever I could to keep my play by play fix
- 49:19Speaker 13: even at Sam Houston State, and I had to cover
- 49:21Speaker 13: the prison system and do a lot of extra stuff.
- 49:22Speaker 13: So I always remember that that I had to work
- 49:25Speaker 13: my way up. And now I see guys that have
- 49:27Speaker 13: passion and I only take the time. I take time
- 49:30Speaker 13: out to try to help everybody. But I'll really try
- 49:32Speaker 13: to guide a guy if I see him really making
- 49:34Speaker 13: the effort and you know, paying his dues and you know,
- 49:38Speaker 13: embracing the grind as I always say. So, there's a
- 49:41Speaker 13: lot of young folks out there that want to get better.
- 49:43Speaker 13: And if I've got some ample time to help some
- 49:44Speaker 13: folks through this program that Dave Gorren set up with
- 49:47Speaker 13: National Sports Media Association, I'm going to do it.
- 49:49Speaker 1: So you talked, You've been the voice long ward as
- 49:51Speaker 1: the voice of the Spurs, but before that, you were
- 49:53Speaker 1: the voice of what when you were in Sam Houston,
- 49:56Speaker 1: Sam Houston.
- 49:56Speaker 13: State for six years? Yeah, the Bearcats.
- 49:58Speaker 1: You know, I was going to say it was because
- 50:00Speaker 1: I was watching a lot of press and a lot
- 50:02Speaker 1: of videos of Bill showing today it was the voice
- 50:04Speaker 1: of death when you were covering the.
- 50:08Speaker 13: That's yeah, okay, okay, the voice is Death.
- 50:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 50:12Speaker 13: Well, true story in nineteen eighty seven, and this is
- 50:14Speaker 13: in the book Story, Sports and Songs. There's a plug
- 50:17Speaker 13: for the book available right now. When I was gone,
- 50:19Speaker 13: operators are standing by no, but this is the true story.
- 50:22Speaker 13: In nineteen eighty seven, I got an award for my
- 50:24Speaker 13: news work with the Associated Press. I was named the
- 50:27Speaker 13: Correspondent of the Year. There was a lot going on
- 50:29Speaker 13: in the prisons back then, not just executions, but a
- 50:31Speaker 13: lot of violence, overcrowding, just a lot of stuff going on.
- 50:34Speaker 13: And because I was right there in the middle of
- 50:35Speaker 13: it and doing the news anyway there in Huntsville, I
- 50:38Speaker 13: was able to make a name for myself in the
- 50:40Speaker 13: news business because I was the correspondent for Texas AP
- 50:43Speaker 13: and for APM Washington as well. So they give me
- 50:45Speaker 13: an award, And at that banquet where I got the award,
- 50:48Speaker 13: I was introduced as the voice of death in Texas
- 50:51Speaker 13: for my extensive work covering the executions.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Now, you covered the Longhorns for over a decade, and
- 50:56Speaker 1: you have good stories with craig Way, I imagine, so
- 50:59Speaker 1: I figured it's his show. I want to I want
- 51:01Speaker 1: to hear some Craigway stories from Bill Shooning.
- 51:04Speaker 13: First of all, I'm very disappointed. And on the day
- 51:05Speaker 13: of my retirement announcement and I'm on the Craigway Show,
- 51:09Speaker 13: Craig Way is getting ready for what a final four games,
- 51:13Speaker 13: something that's not very important, of course, and good luck
- 51:16Speaker 13: to the Horns there in Tampa. I'm pulling for in
- 51:18Speaker 13: big time tonight. Even though Don Staley of course is
- 51:21Speaker 13: from my hometown of Philadelphia, the head coach of South Carolina.
- 51:24Speaker 13: But I've got my horns up. I'm pulling for the
- 51:26Speaker 13: horns tonight. So yeah, there are so many Craigway stories
- 51:29Speaker 13: I don't even know where to begin, so you know
- 51:32Speaker 13: you've heard them a lot. But my my favorite, I guess,
- 51:35Speaker 13: is the time that he overbooked himself on purpose in
- 51:38Speaker 13: Boise and Salt Lake did not get a flight, so
- 51:40Speaker 13: he had to drive back and forth between two NCAA
- 51:42Speaker 13: tournament sites and that's I want to say four hundred
- 51:46Speaker 13: miles or something like that. So it didn't bother Craig
- 51:49Speaker 13: to drive back and forth between games that I don't
- 51:52Speaker 13: know how many miles he drove that weekend, but I
- 51:53Speaker 13: want to say twelve hundred something like that. But he
- 51:56Speaker 13: invented binocular driving on that trip where he went north
- 51:59Speaker 13: of Salt Lake City where the Salt Flats are, it's
- 52:02Speaker 13: very flat, you can see for miles and miles. Well,
- 52:04Speaker 13: Craig would just put the rent car in about one
- 52:06Speaker 13: hundred and ten miles hour on cruise and get the
- 52:09Speaker 13: binoculars out and he could binocular drive so you can
- 52:11Speaker 13: see anybody coming for ten fifteen Miles.
- 52:14Speaker 1: I guess it sounds like one of the Florida Man
- 52:16Speaker 1: stories we do the binocular draw. That is something that
- 52:19Speaker 1: truly is an impressive story. All right, So what do
- 52:22Speaker 1: you remember from your time covering the Horns and being
- 52:24Speaker 1: the voice of Texas football?
- 52:26Speaker 4: Oh?
- 52:26Speaker 13: My goodness. Well, Ricky Williams, I guess would be the
- 52:28Speaker 13: first thing, because he won the Heisman Trophy while I
- 52:30Speaker 13: was there, and I carried or I covered every carry
- 52:32Speaker 13: of his career, and he was such an impressive player
- 52:35Speaker 13: and I really enjoyed that a great deal. So football,
- 52:37Speaker 13: I guess my number one memory would be Ricky, and
- 52:39Speaker 13: also Major apple White. He was one of my favorite players.
- 52:41Speaker 13: In my last game as the voice of the Longhorns
- 52:44Speaker 13: at the Holiday Bowl when Major led that comeback against
- 52:47Speaker 13: Washington and passed for a school record well over four
- 52:49Speaker 13: hundred yard. I think it was four forty eighth that
- 52:51Speaker 13: night for Major apple White. So that was a really
- 52:53Speaker 13: good memory for me. Is my final game as the
- 52:56Speaker 13: Longhorn guy. Baseball, it was all about Brooks k. Schnik Man,
- 52:59Speaker 13: the best player I ever saw in college baseball. He
- 53:02Speaker 13: could do it all. He pitched with a linebacker mentality,
- 53:04Speaker 13: yet he would always go up there and hit about
- 53:06Speaker 13: three fifty. I'll never forget we played at A and
- 53:08Speaker 13: M one time, and Bruce Brooks used to have this
- 53:10Speaker 13: little butt waggle right when he came to the plate,
- 53:13Speaker 13: big left handed hitter, that picture of this guy right
- 53:15Speaker 13: six three two fifteen, could hit all fields and really
- 53:18Speaker 13: really had a lot of pop in his back. But
- 53:19Speaker 13: he would do a little wiggle when he got up
- 53:21Speaker 13: to the plate, and the Aggie fan started pulling dollars out, okay,
- 53:24Speaker 13: like they were going to tip him for his wiggle,
- 53:26Speaker 13: as if he was on stage somewhere sugars or something.
- 53:29Speaker 13: So anyway, but he turned that into respect because I
- 53:33Speaker 13: think the first pitch against A and M at Olsen Field,
- 53:35Speaker 13: he lined to double off the right center field wall,
- 53:37Speaker 13: and the next time up all the Aggie fans who
- 53:39Speaker 13: had dollars out earlier were now praising him and mock praise,
- 53:43Speaker 13: you know, for praise, and of course Brooks just wore
- 53:45Speaker 13: out A and M. I think he probably hit over
- 53:48Speaker 13: five hundred against them in his career.
- 53:50Speaker 1: See and we're talking to Bill Showing on the day
- 53:51Speaker 1: of his semi retirement after twenty four years of being
- 53:54Speaker 1: the voice of the San Antonio Spurs bill.
- 53:56Speaker 2: There's a ton of calls.
- 53:57Speaker 1: I tried to go through all the archives that pulled
- 53:59Speaker 1: my favorite ones from you. The Ricky Williams call though,
- 54:03Speaker 1: when he gets the record, that to me is like
- 54:05Speaker 1: when I think of Texas football in the ninth that
- 54:08Speaker 1: is the thing I think about.
- 54:10Speaker 13: Well, I appreciate that, the funny bad That's not my
- 54:12Speaker 13: favorite call. I think Craig's call as the analyst was
- 54:15Speaker 13: even better than my call because he got to wrapped
- 54:17Speaker 13: it up. I just got excited because we were anticipating
- 54:20Speaker 13: the record, but not on a sixty yard touchdown run
- 54:23Speaker 13: and not again against Txada and end. That was awesome.
- 54:25Speaker 13: One of my favorite memories, too, was the fourth and
- 54:27Speaker 13: inches call. That was the first Big felve championship game
- 54:31Speaker 13: in Saint Louis, And of course the Spurs were big
- 54:33Speaker 13: time or the Spurs. The long Horns were big time underdogs.
- 54:36Speaker 13: That's how long I've been doing the Spurs. I just
- 54:38Speaker 13: called Longhorns the Spurs. The long Horns are big time
- 54:40Speaker 13: underdogs that game, and I think twenty one point underdogs.
- 54:43Speaker 13: They won the ball game. But a very dusty call
- 54:45Speaker 13: on fourth and inches of his own twenty nine yard line,
- 54:47Speaker 13: John mcaviick rolling the dice, faking the handoff, James Brown
- 54:51Speaker 13: rolls who was left? They call it roll left, one
- 54:52Speaker 13: of the famous plays in Longhorn War, and Derrek Lewis
- 54:55Speaker 13: was wide open down the field for a sixty two
- 54:57Speaker 13: yard game that' set up Priest Holmes touchdown on the
- 54:59Speaker 13: next play.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Now you've called over two decades of Spurs basketball, Bill,
- 55:04Speaker 1: I have a sneaking suspicion. I think I know your
- 55:06Speaker 1: favorite player in that time was. But I got to
- 55:08Speaker 1: ask who is it?
- 55:11Speaker 13: You think you well, Manus Gnobili. There's a number of
- 55:16Speaker 13: reasons why he's my favorite guy. And of course I
- 55:18Speaker 13: love all the guys, right, I mean, I love covering
- 55:20Speaker 13: all of them. But I got to call every game
- 55:22Speaker 13: of Manu's career, and I've never seen a guy play
- 55:25Speaker 13: with such passion a night in and night out. He
- 55:28Speaker 13: had a game one night where he couldn't hit a
- 55:30Speaker 13: shot at Oklahoma City, but he was the most valuable
- 55:32Speaker 13: player on the team. I think he went oh for nine,
- 55:34Speaker 13: but I think he had nine or twelve, nine or
- 55:36Speaker 13: ten assists, He had ten or twelve rebounds, four or
- 55:38Speaker 13: five steals, He saved three or four balls going out
- 55:41Speaker 13: of bounds. I mean that kind of an impact on
- 55:43Speaker 13: the game without a field goal. And that's the kind
- 55:44Speaker 13: of player man who was. So when he that midway
- 55:47Speaker 13: through his career, I told him, you're going to be
- 55:49Speaker 13: in the Hall of Fame, but I want to be
- 55:50Speaker 13: there in Springfield when you get inducted. And he goes, well,
- 55:53Speaker 13: I'm not so sure about that, I said, I am,
- 55:55Speaker 13: And sure enough, the night that he got inducted, I
- 55:57Speaker 13: was there. I was there for the press conference the
- 55:58Speaker 13: day before and he recognized me, you know, among the crowd.
- 56:02Speaker 13: And then I was doing an interview with Bill Walton
- 56:04Speaker 13: for a documentary, the Late Bill Walton Documentary that weekend
- 56:08Speaker 13: on the Spurs. I was interviewing him for that and
- 56:11Speaker 13: Manu interrupted the interview. He walked into the room. He's, oh,
- 56:14Speaker 13: it's Bill and Bill hey Manu, And of course Bill
- 56:16Speaker 13: Walton broke into his letter. He is from Mihia Blanco, Argentina,
- 56:19Speaker 13: Manusinobli tomorrow getting inducted due to the Basketball Hall team.
- 56:24Speaker 13: So it's a true great moment for me to be
- 56:26Speaker 13: there with Bill Walton and Manushinobli for for a little bit.
- 56:29Speaker 13: So yeah, so I've had a very blessed career to be,
- 56:31Speaker 13: you know, rubbing my elbows with people like this.
- 56:33Speaker 1: And finally, it's like asking about your favorite child, your
- 56:36Speaker 1: favorite championship call, which one would it be?
- 56:39Speaker 2: You got four of them?
- 56:39Speaker 13: Well, twenty fourteen will always be my favorite season. The
- 56:43Speaker 13: way they dominated the Miami Heat in that final, and
- 56:46Speaker 13: also the fact that they came back to beat them
- 56:48Speaker 13: after the heartbreak the year before they beat the same
- 56:51Speaker 13: team and they drubbed them. I mean, they it was
- 56:53Speaker 13: a four games to one series, but I think the
- 56:56Speaker 13: average march in the victory was eighteen points. The Spurs
- 56:59Speaker 13: shot fifty four percent from the field of that series.
- 57:01Speaker 13: It was clinic. And this is against Lebron James, Dwayne Waiting,
- 57:05Speaker 13: Chris Bosh, and Ray Allen, So you know, I say
- 57:09Speaker 13: Lebron James. Of course, that was the special moment. Kawhi
- 57:13Speaker 13: Leonard playing defense against Lebron James.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Bill shoning after twenty four years, semi hanging up the headphones.
- 57:20Speaker 1: We'll here again somewhere somepow. He will be on the call. Somewhere.
- 57:25Speaker 1: He's on the call for the rest of the Spur season.
- 57:27Speaker 1: They got some cool things planned out for him as well.
- 57:29Speaker 1: He's gonna get his flowers. So pay attention to twelve
- 57:32Speaker 1: hundred wais where you can listen to the games in
- 57:35Speaker 1: the flagship on the free iHeart Radio app. Bill until
- 57:37Speaker 1: next time. I appreciate you, buddy, thanks so much, Thank you, Aver.
- 57:40Speaker 13: I'm sure we'll do it again.
- 57:41Speaker 2: We will.
- 57:42Speaker 1: We will, Bill Shoning all right when we come back.
- 57:44Speaker 1: He talked about major Applewaite. Chris Simms sat next to
- 57:48Speaker 1: Steve Sarkajian talk to Texas quarterbacks. We'll hear from him
- 57:52Speaker 1: next on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports
- 57:54Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrews zimm I'll hanging
- 57:57Speaker 1: out with you on a four Friday. Texas women take
- 58:03Speaker 1: on South Carolina tonight five forty five airtime, six pm
- 58:07Speaker 1: tip on ninety eight one caved FM. You can listen
- 58:10Speaker 1: to it on the free iHeartRadio app tonight as well.
- 58:15Speaker 1: One oh three to one is your home or Texas
- 58:18Speaker 1: Baseball as the long Horns start their weekend series against
- 58:22Speaker 1: the University of Georgia twenty nine to two on the
- 58:25Speaker 1: year the Bulldogs. Oh, we'll see if the bark is
- 58:28Speaker 1: worse than the bite sixty fifteen airtime six point thirty.
- 58:32Speaker 1: First pitch on one oh three one, Mike Hardball Harge.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Our guy from the morning kickoff seven to nine right
- 58:40Speaker 1: here on the zone is on the call as well.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Don't want to miss that.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Let's talk Texas women tonight they take on South Carolina
- 58:49Speaker 1: team if they played three times this season now. In
- 58:53Speaker 1: the games that the Longhorns have won, it has been
- 58:56Speaker 1: thanks in part to the scoring output of Madison Booker.
- 59:00Speaker 1: In the win that they had in Austin, Booker finished
- 59:04Speaker 1: with twenty points as well as grabbed a handful of
- 59:09Speaker 1: rebounds and then gave assists as well. In the two
- 59:11Speaker 1: losses against the game costs, including the one in the
- 59:15Speaker 1: SEC Championship game, seventeen combined points on seven to thirty
- 59:20Speaker 1: two shooting. It's gonna come down to Ken Madison Booker
- 59:24Speaker 1: get off of some of those screens. Can she find
- 59:26Speaker 1: ways to get open shots? And can the post players
- 59:29Speaker 1: Taylor Jones and Kyla Oldacre both show up in the
- 59:33Speaker 1: paint tonight as well. Let's hear from Don Staley. She
- 59:35Speaker 1: spoke about Madison Booker, coach, what do you like most
- 59:39Speaker 1: about Booker's game?
- 59:41Speaker 14: Just a bona fide scorer, not even the Bonafa sco.
- 59:44Speaker 14: She's a playmaker, like, she can score to basketball with
- 59:48Speaker 14: the best of them. She could play multiple positions, so
- 59:52Speaker 14: she's versatile. She could facilitate, you know, she's a really
- 59:57Speaker 14: great rebounder. I mean, she's you know, she's a difficult matchup,
- 1:00:04Speaker 14: like you really have to you know, you have to
- 1:00:07Speaker 14: play her one and a half players, like you can't
- 1:00:09Speaker 14: just straight up play her because she has so so
- 1:00:13Speaker 14: much of a skill set that if you don't show
- 1:00:19Speaker 14: whoever's guarding her in this show, you know, close her
- 1:00:22Speaker 14: her space off. I mean, because she's able to rise
- 1:00:25Speaker 14: above She's a big guard that that could pretty much
- 1:00:29Speaker 14: get her shot off at any at any given time.
- 1:00:33Speaker 14: And then you got to make her play defense. She's
- 1:00:34Speaker 14: a willing defender, but with how much she needs to
- 1:00:39Speaker 14: score for them, you got to make her play on
- 1:00:42Speaker 14: that other other side of the basketball so that that
- 1:00:45Speaker 14: pretty jump shot isn't as pretty and minute you know
- 1:00:51Speaker 14: thirty as it is at minute five.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Obviously, the game plan for both of these teams will
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: be how well do you play on the defensive side
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: of the Can you dog the other team defensively enough
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: to upset their shot to upset their shot makers.
- 1:01:06Speaker 15: Uh.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: Matthew Booker got asked about playing uh South Carolina for
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: a fourth time and also the matchup with Ree Hall,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: who's a defensive specialist for South Carolina.
- 1:01:18Speaker 9: Uh.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: She's been on the record talking about how in the
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: SEC Championship game that she woke up texting her parents.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I'm going to stop Madison Booker. What is it like
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: playing South Carolina for a fourth time and what are
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: your thoughts on their stopper Hall.
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: She's a great defender.
- 1:01:34Speaker 16: I mean it's kind of shocked she wasn't unliked like
- 1:01:38Speaker 16: the like our comforts, like defensive team or anything like that.
- 1:01:41Speaker 16: Long lean athletic. She definitely, you know, makes you think
- 1:01:46Speaker 16: on the court as an officive player.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, she's a great player.
- 1:01:49Speaker 10: I totally have a respect her.
- 1:01:52Speaker 16: Definitely don't make me think great player.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: So Rory Harmon got asked a similar question about taking
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: on a familiar matchup the worth time that these two
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: teams are facing off, this one obviously meaning a little
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: bit more in the final four. What are what do
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: you think about facing such a familiar SEC opponent in
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: this final four?
- 1:02:12Speaker 17: Yeah, I feel like we do know them inside out
- 1:02:15Speaker 17: as much as they probably know us in side it out.
- 1:02:17Speaker 17: So there's just saying that we've kind of been living
- 1:02:20Speaker 17: by since the tournament started. But once talent meets talent
- 1:02:24Speaker 17: and all that, it's basically it doesn't really matter anymore.
- 1:02:28Speaker 17: It's about preparation and who's gonna step up on the
- 1:02:31Speaker 17: biggest stage that we are in right now and who's
- 1:02:34Speaker 17: gonna be the tougher team.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: So I love that that's been the quote pretty much
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: this entire month of March for the University of Texas Women,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: which talent meets talent, then it turns into preparation, then
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: it turns into hard work. And the Longhorns have been
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: one of the most prepared teams this season for the ability,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: thanks in part to the coaching staff and the assistant
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: coaches for Vic Schaffer of getting this team absolutely ready
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: that Rory Harmon would be, I think considered by many
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: a defensive stopper, a defensive specialist. She got to ask,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: do you prefer these high scoring games that you see
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: against teams that you know, high scoring games that the
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: long runs have been in, or do you rather have
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: defensive battles like you might have tonight against South Carolina.
- 1:03:20Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 1:03:20Speaker 17: I think depending on who we're playing, TCU in South
- 1:03:23Speaker 17: Carolina are two completely different teams. But during a TCU game, yeah,
- 1:03:27Speaker 17: we knew they were probably they're as far as their offense, like,
- 1:03:30Speaker 17: they're quite the efficient offense and one of the top
- 1:03:34Speaker 17: offenses in the nation. So we really did have to
- 1:03:37Speaker 17: hone in on defense and trying to keep the score
- 1:03:41Speaker 17: as low as possible and not like let it just
- 1:03:43Speaker 17: keep going up, because I think that's when we keep
- 1:03:45Speaker 17: teams our goal is like keeping them under sixty. And
- 1:03:49Speaker 17: then also apparently we just found it out a stat
- 1:03:52Speaker 17: earlier today. Don't see it all right, that's fine, but
- 1:03:59Speaker 17: just let's just say, like when we are playing the
- 1:04:02Speaker 17: best defense and keeping the score pretty low, I think
- 1:04:04Speaker 17: we're at a better chance. But with South Carolina, I
- 1:04:08Speaker 17: think both of us are pretty similar in a way
- 1:04:10Speaker 17: where we both can play defense and we both have
- 1:04:12Speaker 17: weapons to score. So like kind of the name of
- 1:04:15Speaker 17: the game is, it's just like who's gonna win it
- 1:04:17Speaker 17: more on this biggest stage that we're at right now,
- 1:04:20Speaker 17: and who's going to be tougher and bring the most energy.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to this one. I'm also looking forward
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: to asking Craig way when he joins us in the
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: four o'clock hour, four seventeen, Craig joins us from Tampa Bay.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: He'll be on the call today. I'm curious what that
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: stat is. I'm gonna ask him, what is.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: That stat that was hush hush yesterday? And does he know?
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Is he gonna keep it in bargoed until maybe the pregame.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: There's some questions about what stat.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: I have to imagine it has to probably indicate that
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: when the Longhorns are shooting the ball pretty well, they
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: end up winning more of these games. I have a
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: sneaking suspicion it's something like that. Now, finally, I want
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: to hear from Shay Holly, a veteran on this team,
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: how difficult is it to face a team like South
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Carolina that you've seen so many times already?
- 1:05:10Speaker 15: Yeah, I would say it's our fourth time playing them,
- 1:05:13Speaker 15: but it's also their fourth time playing us. So it
- 1:05:16Speaker 15: goes both ways in the sense of, like, obviously, on
- 1:05:20Speaker 15: both sides, it's going to be a really well scouted game.
- 1:05:22Speaker 15: We're gonna know, play calls, all that stuff. So it's
- 1:05:26Speaker 15: just really how you execute it. You can put in
- 1:05:28Speaker 15: different things, I'm sure they're doing that as well. But
- 1:05:31Speaker 15: at the end of the day, like Rory said, like
- 1:05:33Speaker 15: talent meets talent, it's who wants it more on that
- 1:05:36Speaker 15: given day. So we have to go out and be
- 1:05:40Speaker 15: ready for a tough and physical game and yeah, and
- 1:05:43Speaker 15: really just have the energy.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: We'll hear more from players and coaches as we gear
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: up for the final four tonight Texas and South Carolina.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: You can hear the game on KAVET FM ninety eight
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: one on the free iHeartRadio app.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Greig What joins us Craig Way Show. Craig is in
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Tampa Bay.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: He will join us here in about fifteen minutes to
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: talk Texas women's basketball as the Longhorned women get ready
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: to take on South Carolina. It's hard to beat a
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: good team twice. That's what they're gonna try to do.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: And this one means more, not only because it's a
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: matchup between two of the SEC's best in South Carolina
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: and Texas, but it's because this one the winner moves
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: on to the national championship. It takes on the winner
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: of Yukon and UCLA, So this will be an excellent
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: matchup tonight. Obviously, we have been watching these two teams
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: circle each other. We saw them when they played in
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Columbia earlier this season. We saw them when they played
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: at the Moody Center in February in the SEC championship
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: game in Greenville, South Carolina.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: And I go through it.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: I look at all of the pronosciaters, I look at
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: all of the guys who are giving takes on these teams,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: and it seems like the team that everybody is rooting
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: four almost is the Ellevil Empire.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: And I don't know why.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: I've just seen so many people rooting for a Yukon
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: team with pagebackers.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Maybe it's because.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Maybe it's because Yukon is the lowest seed throughout.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: College basketball's Final four.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: On the men's and women's side of things, there are
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: seven number one seeds of the eight teams remaining. Yukon,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: the team that won their first national championship thirty years
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: ago and never looked back, continue to just rack up
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: win after win after win, trophy after trophy after trophy.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: They are the two seed out of their region going
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: up against a UCLA. And maybe that's why this team
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: that has obviously been a juggernaut in college basketball, one
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: of the best dynasties in college sports. Ever, maybe that's
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: the reason everybody is rooting for these spunky underdogs in
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: the Yukon Huskies. We'll figure it out, Craig Wade joins
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: us later. You also might give us a little insight
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: on what that secret stat is that Vick Schaeffer and
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Ry Harmon we're talking about yesterday during media availability. I'm
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: curious to find out what his thoughts are on that,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: And of course our final pregames are pre show thoughts
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: on what we can consider this matchups tonight to be.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Because I have the matchup between Bree Haul for UC
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: or USC versus Madison Booker as my matchup tonight of
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: this two heavyweight fights, but the fight between these two
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: heavyweights that will be a deciding factor and who wins
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: it tonight or this weekend, I should say. Also in
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: the Almost City, the Men's Final four begins, Texas or
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Houston representing the state of Texas. In the Men's Final
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: four versus Duke is the game that I have circled
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: as the winner of that one going up against the
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: champion out of the SEC It's going to be Auburn
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: or Florida on the other side, of the bracket. That
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: game is I PM tomorrow seven point Houston versus Duke,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: and the winner of that game, I feel will be
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: the champion of college basketball. On the men's side of things, now,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Calvin Sampson has done a great job of building a
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: program at Houston that rolled through the Big Twelve this year,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: that rolled through the NCAA tournament this year, and now
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: he faces a Duke squad led by the eventual number
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: one overall pick, Cooper Flag. What do you see out
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: of Duke? How do you prepare for John Shire's team?
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: He spoke to Colin Cowherd leading up to tomorrow's matchup.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: The first thing that jumps out to me is what
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: a great job John did and putting his team together.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: You know, for.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: Example, brand a kid like Scion James and to pair
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: next to Cooper Flag and Kinnepo and the big kid
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: inside because he's smart, he's tough, doesn't require a lot
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: of shops. It's a lot of winner in him. Cooper
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Flag was going to be the centerpiece. How they fit
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: everybody around them is what's so impressive. How do you
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: start to stop Cooper flagging? But that's kind of a
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: silly question. You don't, but you have to be the
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: best version of yourself. You know, we played in the
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: Big Twelve the last two years and you know, whether
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: it's Kansas or Iowa State or Texas Tech, there's a
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: lot of really good teams and all those teams had
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: a best player. So we'll come up with something that
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: will it be good enough?
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: I don't know. Maybe it will, maybe it won't.
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, every team has
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: to focus on what they do good and try to
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: be their best version themselves for that forty minutes. For
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: that forty minutes, we have to be the best version
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: of the Houston Cougar as we can be.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: Now, one of the best players on this Houston Cougar
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: team is Juwan Roberts, who is a defensive stopper of
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: the Senior has been the player that his coach has
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: thrown at other team's best players. He's been the guy
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: that when it comes to hey, we need to stop,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: we need to find a way to limit a guy.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: This has been the guy that Houston has gone to.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: Roberts got ass is Duke the most talented team that
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: this Cougar's team has faced this year.
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: On paper, yeah, but when we've seen that a lot,
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: and especially when we played against Auburn, Alabama, those teams,
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: Texas Tech, Arizona. But now I feel like our defense
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: is what.
- 1:11:24Speaker 10: Gets us going.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: So on paper yet are pretty good, but I feel like,
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: you know, once you come in with that defense mentality,
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: I'm just gonna be a different ball game now.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: John Shire, the head coach of Duke, has won a
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: national championship with Duke. He's trying to be one of
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: the only coaches ever to lead his alma mater after
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: winning a title as a player and also as a coach,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: and Calvin Sampson talked yesterday at his media availability about
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: how you know he's a good coach when we don't
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: even talk about the fact he's replacing the legendary coach
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: k Anymore, that we just are like, hey, this is
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: now the coach of Duke basketball. This is the guy
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: that is leading the program.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: He got asked.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: John Shire was asked about how do you prepare for
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: a team like Houston when they can throw so many
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: players and so many adjustments against you.
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: Houston no offense to our scout team. We have a
- 1:12:13Speaker 6: great scout team. It's not something you can replicate and
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: so it's a combination of understanding what could or could
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: not be there, but then at the same time, you
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: don't want to make them out to be the boogeyman.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: No, you can't fear your opponent. You got to respect
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: your opponent. You got to respect your opponent. You cannot
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: fear your opponent. You're gonna lose games like that. John
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Shire was also on Scott Van Pelt's Sports Center last
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: night and he's talking about the biggest concerns when he
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: talks about this Cougar team.
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: Well, a lot concerns me.
- 1:12:46Speaker 6: I think you start with the fact that they've had
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: you know, the core of their team has been together
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: for multiple years and so the experience they've had together,
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: their connection is incredibly deep. But they're just a team
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: that doesn't beat themselves. You know, you have to really
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: beat them. And it starts with they make everything difficult
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: for you on our offense.
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: Our offense, their defense is legit.
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: You know, when you see one two guys moving in
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: a pick a roll defense together, another three are moving
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: at the same exact time. I mean, it's incredibly impressive
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: when you watch them play. And then they have a
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: top ten offense in the country. You know, they have
- 1:13:24Speaker 6: three guys that are shooting over forty from three. They
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: poulenge you in the offensive glass. They're just just they're
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: a great team, and so a lot concerns me. I
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: feel we're a great team too, and we're excited for
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: the challenge, but a ton of respect for coach Sampson
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: and what he's done, and then their team of how
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: connected and how tough they are.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Now, this is a Houston team that does everything really well.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: They don't do anything. There's no facet of the game
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: that they don't do well. That was why they won
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: the Big Twelve as handily as they did, and that's
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: why they come intonight tomorrow's matchup as a team that
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: a lot of people are picking to not only beat Dupa,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: to win the whole thing.
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Bruce Pearl on the other side of things, with an
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: Auburn team that was the number one overall scene overlooked
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: a little bit, but he's also similar to Sampson, an
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: older coach. He talks about the age difference between the
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: two old guys Sampson and Pearl versus the young guys.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: In Todd Golden's Florida Gators and John Shire's Duke Blue Devils.
- 1:14:27Speaker 7: You know, the only thing, the only way I look
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: at it is Calvin and I have fewer chances to
- 1:14:32Speaker 7: get where we are right now was John Shire and
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: Todd Golden will be back here many more times. So
- 1:14:39Speaker 7: Calvin and I have better take advantage of it this
- 1:14:41Speaker 7: time because we're you know, we're clearly on the back nine.
- 1:14:46Speaker 7: I'm not on the eighteenth hole yet, but we're getting closer.
- 1:14:50Speaker 7: And so you know, Todd and John don't give up
- 1:14:53Speaker 7: anything in experience. They just they just give up a
- 1:14:58Speaker 7: little bit. And they're not They're not as much gray hair,
- 1:15:02Speaker 7: and they may not have been beat down as much
- 1:15:06Speaker 7: as Calvin and I have been over the years.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: It's also a difference of philosophy when it comes to
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: team building. Whereas Auburn and Houston are built around seniors.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: It's a senior, older upper classmans driven team versus Florida
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: and Duke, which have younger guys leading the way.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: All right, when we come back, we.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: Go to Tampa Bay, Craig Way on the call tonight
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: in the final four for the women, the Longhorns and
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: the game Cocks. Tonight, You're not going to miss it.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: You can hear the game on ninety eight one caved
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: FM at six pm. Tip we'll go to Tampa Bay.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: We'll talk to Craig as we gear up for the
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: matchup in the women's Final four. All coming up next
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports Radio
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred The Zone. And we are about an
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: hour and thirty away from tip off between the Texas
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: women and South Carolina from Tampa Bay. It is Craig Way, Craig,
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: what do we need to know? How much more excited
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: can we get here?
- 1:16:05Speaker 12: Well, I'll tell you Andrew, it's it's I would say
- 1:16:10Speaker 12: it's pretty exciting times. I mean, folks are pretty pumped
- 1:16:13Speaker 12: up about this. You know, it's been kind of a
- 1:16:15Speaker 12: calm before the storm. Yesterday the teams had their practices
- 1:16:19Speaker 12: they're closed practices on the floor here and then they
- 1:16:23Speaker 12: were you know, se questioned back in their hotels. And
- 1:16:25Speaker 12: then this morning to very early afternoon all four teams
- 1:16:28Speaker 12: got a chance to come back in for one more
- 1:16:30Speaker 12: shoot around on the floor, to get an hour on
- 1:16:31Speaker 12: the floor.
- 1:16:32Speaker 10: So they came back to go through all of that.
- 1:16:35Speaker 12: And you know the interesting thing is not only and
- 1:16:40Speaker 12: I think Walhorn fans are very very up on this,
- 1:16:43Speaker 12: the fact that it's you know, Texas and South Carolina
- 1:16:46Speaker 12: meeting for the fourth time this year. They get that, uh,
- 1:16:50Speaker 12: but you kind of UCLA also want a rematch, and
- 1:16:54Speaker 12: so there's gonna be, you know, something where there's gonna
- 1:16:58Speaker 12: be some some real familiarlady here, And I think it
- 1:17:01Speaker 12: makes it a little bit easier for the coaches to
- 1:17:05Speaker 12: do it.
- 1:17:06Speaker 10: Like I said, it's kind of the devil, you know.
- 1:17:08Speaker 12: But by the same token, you know, you have to
- 1:17:12Speaker 12: you have to prepare and make your adjustments. And in
- 1:17:14Speaker 12: the case of Texas, I think you have to make
- 1:17:17Speaker 12: even more adjustments because, after all, South Carolina won two
- 1:17:21Speaker 12: of the three matchups with Texas. Not only did they
- 1:17:24Speaker 12: win two of the three matchups, they won the most
- 1:17:26Speaker 12: recent one. So you make your adjustments off of that.
- 1:17:30Speaker 12: There was one film session very earlier in the week.
- 1:17:35Speaker 12: I think it was even Tuesday night when the team
- 1:17:37Speaker 12: first got here, when we were in the hotel and
- 1:17:39Speaker 12: they were going over some stuff and I'm sitting in
- 1:17:42Speaker 12: there watching him. Vic Schaeffer is showing him about the
- 1:17:44Speaker 12: rebounding and of course they got out rebounded by TCU
- 1:17:48Speaker 12: in the game. But then the other thing he said was,
- 1:17:51Speaker 12: you know, think about it. In the last game with
- 1:17:53Speaker 12: South Carolina, he said, how they out rebounded us.
- 1:17:56Speaker 10: He said, so, I'm telling you it's just.
- 1:17:58Speaker 12: Gonna be more of the same if we don't do
- 1:18:00Speaker 12: a better job of rebounding. And he showed a lot
- 1:18:02Speaker 12: of times in the game where Texas had the ball.
- 1:18:07Speaker 10: This is the TCU.
- 1:18:08Speaker 12: Game, had the ball in its hands coming off a
- 1:18:11Speaker 12: misshot by TCUM.
- 1:18:12Speaker 10: For whatever reason, they didn't hold it.
- 1:18:13Speaker 12: They dropped it or it got taken out of their
- 1:18:15Speaker 12: grasp or whatever, and he said, can't have that you
- 1:18:19Speaker 12: you know, you've got to you got to be able
- 1:18:21Speaker 12: to hold on to it when it comes to that.
- 1:18:22Speaker 10: So you know, they were going over that things.
- 1:18:24Speaker 12: But there's a lot of things obviously to deal with
- 1:18:26Speaker 12: when you're talking about this South Carolina team.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Well what's ironic too, is we talked before the TCU game,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: Craig and I said like, hey, the front court will
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: be the deciding factor. And it feels like again tonight
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: it's going to be the front court the deciding factor.
- 1:18:39Speaker 12: Yeah, I I do, you know, if only because they
- 1:18:46Speaker 12: can't allow a player like and I'm not denigrating her
- 1:18:50Speaker 12: at all.
- 1:18:50Speaker 10: She's a fine basketball player.
- 1:18:52Speaker 12: But Chloe Kitts is not the straw that stirs the
- 1:18:55Speaker 12: drink for South Carolina. That's my Lasia full Wiley or
- 1:18:59Speaker 12: taking a pow Powe or Raven Johnson or Ree Hall
- 1:19:04Speaker 12: or Sanaiah Fagan or Joyce Edwards I just named, or
- 1:19:08Speaker 12: even Tessa Johnson. I just named seven players ahead of Cloye. Now,
- 1:19:12Speaker 12: Chloe Kitts averages ten and half points in eight rebounds
- 1:19:15Speaker 12: per game, so that's not shabby at all, but they
- 1:19:19Speaker 12: have allowed her.
- 1:19:20Speaker 10: Here's my point.
- 1:19:21Speaker 12: It's not that she's not capable of it and doesn't
- 1:19:24Speaker 12: do well in other games or something like that.
- 1:19:26Speaker 10: It's just against Texas.
- 1:19:28Speaker 12: In the two wins for South Carolina, she's been a
- 1:19:31Speaker 12: major factor both in the game in Columbia and in
- 1:19:35Speaker 12: the game in Greenville in the SEC Tournament final.
- 1:19:38Speaker 10: She was a major factor in that game.
- 1:19:41Speaker 12: And that's what the point is, is that she can't
- 1:19:43Speaker 12: be allowed to have a huge game because you know,
- 1:19:45Speaker 12: between Pow Pow and Raven Johnson and full Wiley, they're
- 1:19:50Speaker 12: gonna get a lot of you know, they're gonna get
- 1:19:53Speaker 12: their points, so you have to limit the other players.
- 1:19:56Speaker 12: You have to limit Sanaiah Fagan, you have to limit
- 1:19:58Speaker 12: Joyce Edwards. You know, the leading scores for South Carolina
- 1:20:02Speaker 12: come off the bench. Jeorse Edwards, the outstanding freshman, averages
- 1:20:06Speaker 12: thirteen points per game in Malaysia full whiley averages twelve.
- 1:20:08Speaker 10: Points per game. They come off the bench and they're
- 1:20:10Speaker 10: the leading scores.
- 1:20:11Speaker 12: That's why the game Cox did not have a first
- 1:20:14Speaker 12: team All American, That's why South Carolina did not have
- 1:20:18Speaker 12: a National Player of the Year finalists, because they're the
- 1:20:21Speaker 12: some of the parts, but there are really good, some
- 1:20:25Speaker 12: and very dangerous parts. And that's what Texas will have
- 1:20:28Speaker 12: to contend with.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say that's a tight fist for
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: the South Carolina game Cocks and Don Staley.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: This is a good whole team.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: And all right, So Craig Rehaul versus Madison Booker, are
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: we building this up to be this like championship fight?
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: If Madison struggles today, will Rehaul become like this is
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: the player of the tournament? What do you think about
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: this matchup?
- 1:20:51Speaker 12: Well, I think it gained a little more legs because
- 1:20:56Speaker 12: after the game in Austin the Texas won, This stuff
- 1:21:01Speaker 12: kind of filtered out that that that Madison was saying
- 1:21:06Speaker 12: things like she can't guard me, she can't guard me.
- 1:21:09Speaker 12: She she never said the words she can't guard me.
- 1:21:13Speaker 12: She said, at times when I'm really going well, I
- 1:21:17Speaker 12: feel like no player can guard me.
- 1:21:19Speaker 10: If I'm playing my game and I'm doing well.
- 1:21:21Speaker 12: She didn't say pointedly Bree Hall can't guard me, but
- 1:21:26Speaker 12: because Bree Hall drew the defensive assignment on her.
- 1:21:28Speaker 10: Then in the SEC.
- 1:21:29Speaker 12: Championship, when Booker had a sluggish start and a slow
- 1:21:33Speaker 12: game and all that, all the South Carolina players were
- 1:21:35Speaker 12: kind of clowning her after the game and saying, oh,
- 1:21:37Speaker 12: we can't guard you.
- 1:21:38Speaker 10: Hump, you know that sort of thing.
- 1:21:40Speaker 12: So that thing kind of gained its own legs about that.
- 1:21:44Speaker 12: I made a comment to Madison the other night about
- 1:21:48Speaker 12: the whole thing, and what I was trying to go
- 1:21:50Speaker 12: with this at TCU was when you are in a
- 1:21:53Speaker 12: zone and you're really driving and they're not stopping you,
- 1:21:56Speaker 12: do you feel in the moment like they can't guard me.
- 1:21:59Speaker 10: I'm gonn going.
- 1:22:00Speaker 12: When I said that, she started laughing, like here we
- 1:22:02Speaker 12: go again, and I'm like I'm not I said, I'm
- 1:22:04Speaker 12: not talking about South Carolina.
- 1:22:06Speaker 10: I'm just talking about.
- 1:22:07Speaker 12: Within yourself and then you know, and then she went
- 1:22:10Speaker 12: on and answered the question.
- 1:22:12Speaker 10: But it kind of gained it the legs.
- 1:22:14Speaker 12: And in an event as big as this, where there's
- 1:22:17Speaker 12: so many reporters here and so many websites and so
- 1:22:21Speaker 12: many podcasts and so many other media covering the thing,
- 1:22:24Speaker 12: in a deal like this, you're going to have people
- 1:22:29Speaker 12: looking for additional angles, other other things to discuss other
- 1:22:35Speaker 12: than just match up itself.
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: So Rory Harmon is the defensive stopper.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: She got to asked yesterday about like, Hey, when you
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: were recruited here do you want? Did you expect to
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: play forty minutes of tight nosed defense the entire time?
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: She said, Hey, that's what I've been doing since high school.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: This is what I'm kind of used to doing. You
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: said at the beginning crag, we were talking about how
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: both these coaches have faced each other another times. The
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: fourth time they've seen each other, I can see this
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: turning into a defensive battle, and this being who is
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: going to play hard noe defense longer. If that happens,
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: it's gonna be the long Horns because they have Roy Harmon.
- 1:23:09Speaker 10: Well.
- 1:23:10Speaker 12: A lower scoring game would definitely favorite Texas The game
- 1:23:14Speaker 12: they won at home against South Carolina was what.
- 1:23:19Speaker 10: Was sixty six to sixty two.
- 1:23:21Speaker 12: The game they lost was sixty seven to fifty in Columbia.
- 1:23:26Speaker 12: The game they lost in Greenboble was sixty four to
- 1:23:31Speaker 12: forty five. They couldn't get their offense going on that
- 1:23:34Speaker 12: and South Carolina had enough offense to go with the
- 1:23:37Speaker 12: defense that was really clamping down on Texas. So they've
- 1:23:40Speaker 12: got to find some offense, for sure. But a game
- 1:23:42Speaker 12: that's played in the fifties to sixties, I think probably
- 1:23:46Speaker 12: what favorite Texas.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: So finally I want to ask, what are your expectations
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: for this game? Do you see what's the path for
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: the Longhorns to win outside of it just being a
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: low scoring game.
- 1:23:56Speaker 10: Well, I'm going to tell you right now.
- 1:23:58Speaker 12: The key, the big keys to me is the number
- 1:24:01Speaker 12: two two, as in quarter number two, as in the
- 1:24:06Speaker 12: second quarter. In both of the games for South Carolina
- 1:24:10Speaker 12: that they won, they dominated, absolutely dominated the second quarter
- 1:24:15Speaker 12: of the game.
- 1:24:16Speaker 10: Texas was awful.
- 1:24:17Speaker 12: I think they scored six points eight points the game
- 1:24:21Speaker 12: in Colombia and didn't do much better in the set.
- 1:24:24Speaker 12: They gave up a fifteen oh run in the second
- 1:24:26Speaker 12: quarter in the game in the Columbia and also had
- 1:24:28Speaker 12: another really dive I think it was thirteen unanswered. The
- 1:24:32Speaker 12: game in the SEC Championship in Greenville, they just in.
- 1:24:35Speaker 10: The first quarter was closed. It was twelve to ten.
- 1:24:38Speaker 12: But the second quarter they just got outmanned and outmatched
- 1:24:41Speaker 12: and didn't make shots, and South Carolina did and got
- 1:24:44Speaker 12: them in transition.
- 1:24:46Speaker 10: So we may find out early again.
- 1:24:49Speaker 12: If South Carolina has a real big first quarter or
- 1:24:51Speaker 12: second quarter like that, it could be another long night
- 1:24:54Speaker 12: for Texas. If they stand toe to toe with them
- 1:24:56Speaker 12: in the first half, then I like their chances. Then
- 1:24:59Speaker 12: they probably you go through the last couple of quarters
- 1:25:01Speaker 12: and have a shot to win this thing.
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: Now, I don't want to give too much away here, Craig,
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: but Roy Harmon almost said the stat that's the secret
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: stat for this team.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: Do you know what it is? You know what she
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: was alluding to.
- 1:25:11Speaker 12: Have no idea, but I can, but I can tell
- 1:25:14Speaker 12: you this. I mean, that's just something that they keeping themselves.
- 1:25:16Speaker 12: But they have several different layers and tiers of stats,
- 1:25:24Speaker 12: and it has usually has to do with rebounding, points
- 1:25:29Speaker 12: in the paint, and points off turnovers. Those all three
- 1:25:33Speaker 12: were real big factors in all three games. When Texas
- 1:25:37Speaker 12: won the game in Austin, they out rebound South Carolina,
- 1:25:39Speaker 12: they outscored them in points in the paint, and they
- 1:25:42Speaker 12: got them to turn over the ball more and scored
- 1:25:45Speaker 12: off of turnovers more. So I would have a feeling
- 1:25:49Speaker 12: it's something like that, But you know, it could be
- 1:25:52Speaker 12: any number of different tiers of stats. But I would
- 1:25:56Speaker 12: say that that that you'll have something to do with
- 1:25:58Speaker 12: one or more of those elements.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Texas and South Carolina tip off tonight ninety eight one
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: KVED FM is the home of the women's basketball Final
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: four six pm tip. Craigway will be on the call. Craig,
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: before I let you go here. Final four for the
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: men is in San Antonio. Are you caring or you
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: locked in who you got?
- 1:26:16Speaker 10: I picked Duke at the start.
- 1:26:18Speaker 12: I have three of my four picks still around, and
- 1:26:24Speaker 12: so I would say, you know, I'm gonna stick with Duke.
- 1:26:28Speaker 12: But the game with Houston, I think, is going to
- 1:26:32Speaker 12: go a long way toward determining the national title. I
- 1:26:35Speaker 12: think if Houston wins, they've got a real good chance
- 1:26:37Speaker 12: to win the thing. Auburn has been the number one
- 1:26:41Speaker 12: overall seed and they've been number one for most of
- 1:26:42Speaker 12: the year. But it's funny, I know, you like to
- 1:26:44Speaker 12: look at those things with the fellows in the desert
- 1:26:47Speaker 12: in the way they play those odds and all that
- 1:26:48Speaker 12: kind of stuff, and they have like the lowest odds
- 1:26:51Speaker 12: to win it, you know, the longest odds to try
- 1:26:55Speaker 12: to win it. So it's it's kind of interesting to
- 1:26:57Speaker 12: see how that is, see how that's to be.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: So yeah, my degenerates, my degenerates have been talking about that.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: Craig all Right, Texas baseball tonight, also against Georgia.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: Quickly, what are your thoughts here?
- 1:27:10Speaker 12: If Jared Spencer has another good night on the mound
- 1:27:12Speaker 12: and then they dodged the thunderstorms around the Greater Austin
- 1:27:15Speaker 12: and Central Texas here they had a good shot to
- 1:27:17Speaker 12: win the opener tonight.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: Craig, have a great call tonight, my friend Texas and
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: South Carolina.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: This is gonna be a good one.
- 1:27:24Speaker 10: Yeah, looking forward to it.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: Thanks, Jim all right, Texas in South Carolina tonight on
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: ninety eight one caved FM, five forty five hour times
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: six pm. Tip Craig ways on the call, all right,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: when we come back more Men's Final four. Does Houston
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: have a chance to win the whole thing. We'll talk
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: about it next on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: Andrew Zimml filling in for Craig this afternoon as the
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball team fased off against South Carolina in
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: the Final four. Winner goes on to play a game
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: against either UCLA or Yukon, which could be very interested,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: very intriguing. But the Longhorns, they got their work cut
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: out for him. Last time these two teams played like
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: Craig said, it came down to a second quarter, a
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: twenty one to nine run that led a deficit too
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: large for Texas to overcome. Other news that came out today,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: former Cowboys backup quarterback got a new deal that would
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: be Trey Lance greed to an agreement a one year
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: deal where a six point two million with the La Chargers.
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: Sources to old ESPN earlier today, Lance and Taylor Hinnicky
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: are now the backups for Justin Herbert.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: I was a big Trey Lance guy coming out of
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: North Dakota State, the number three overall pick in the
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: twenty twenty one draft. He remains something of a mystery
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: after four seasons, which at the most important position on
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: the field, you kind of would like a sure thing,
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: and Trey Lance has never really been able to show
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: anybody what he is capable of. In twenty twenty three,
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: the Cowboys acquired him for a fourth round pick and
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: last year's draft. Didn't play a snap in twenty twenty
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: three and only got some spot duty in twenty twenty four.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: You thought with the injury to Dak Prescott that Trey
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: Lance could have gotten some snaps. Last year, Cooper Rush
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: was the backup quarterback that got the NOD because of
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: that injury to Dak Prescott, so Lance never got any
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: playing time. At twenty four, he's younger than twenty twenty
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: four first round picks Bonnix and Michael Pennix, junior former
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: coach Mike McCarthy, and Lance just needs to Former coach
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy said, Lance just needs to gain some experience.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: He's only played nineteen games in North Coastate before entering
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: the NFL, Which is a perfect segue into college basketball
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: because the two teams that are playing in the Final
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: four the two teams that most people have picked to
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: win the whole thing. Duke and Houston are two completely
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: different mindsets when it comes to the way that you
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: go about competing. Now, the one and Done has existed
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: in the NBA for about twenty years ish right, and
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: the idea behind it was, we're not gonna let guys
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: go straight from high school to the NBA. We won
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: him at least one season in college, with the hope
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: being that these guys would gain some experience, get an education,
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: and then go into the NBA. What it turned into
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: is essentially college turning into a nine month AAU circuit
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: for some of these guys before going to the NBA.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: And Duke, while they do have some older players on
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: their roster, they are led by eighteen year old AP
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: All American and Player of the Year Cooper flag. They
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: are a young team led by John Shier, a young
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: head coach. Now give him all the credit in the world.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: He's an experience head coach at this point. He's got
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: Duke to the Final Four. After doing it as a player,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: he now does it as a coach.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: But this is a.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Young Duke squad led by a young guy in Cooper Flagg,
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: for all intents and purposes, is a young king of
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: the court. He's a very just turning eighteen years old.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: He's going to be the number one overall pick in
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: this year's NBA draft, but there's still a lot of
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: experience that he lacks, and for Duke, a program that
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: isn't for again all intensive purposes, rolled through the NCAA
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: tournament and beat a team in Alabama, a two seed
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: that a lot of people get picked to get to
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: the Final four. They rolled through them and beat him
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: by almost twenty points. So they haven't dealt with a
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: lot of adversity compared to what the Houston Cougars have
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: with Calvin Sampson and his squad. That team, an older,
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: more wiley, more beat up, taking their lumps type of team,
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: comes into this Final four maybe feeling like they're a
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: little longer in the tooth and a little bit more experienced.
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: John Shire spoke at his media availability yesterday about how
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: do you prepare for Houston, who can throw so many
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: different looks at you.
- 1:32:09Speaker 6: Houston no offense to our scout team. We have a
- 1:32:11Speaker 6: great scout team. It's not something you can replicate, and
- 1:32:16Speaker 6: so it's a combination of understanding what could or could
- 1:32:19Speaker 6: not be there. But then at the same time, you
- 1:32:22Speaker 6: don't want to make them out to be the boogeyman.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: No, they can't be the boogeyman, but you got to give.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: Them some respect.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: And what this season has shown, at least to me,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: is that Houston a team that rolled through the Big Twelve,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: that looked like the best team in the conference. Almost
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: from the tip, they felt really good. Josh Shire was
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: on Scott Van Pelt's Sports Center and you talked about
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: the concerns the team like Houston gives you.
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: Well, a lot concerns me.
- 1:32:51Speaker 6: I think you start with the fact that they've had
- 1:32:54Speaker 6: the core of their team has been together for multiple
- 1:32:56Speaker 6: years and so the experience they've had together, their connection
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: is incredibly deep. But they're just a team that doesn't
- 1:33:05Speaker 6: beat themselves. You know, you have to really beat them.
- 1:33:08Speaker 6: And it starts with they make everything difficult for you
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: on our offense.
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: Our offense, their defense is legit.
- 1:33:17Speaker 6: You know, when you see two guys moving in a
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: pick a roll defense together, another three are moving that
- 1:33:22Speaker 6: same exact time. I mean, it's incredibly impressive when you
- 1:33:25Speaker 6: watch him play. And then they have a top ten
- 1:33:27Speaker 6: offense in the country. You know, they have three guys
- 1:33:29Speaker 6: that are shooting over forty from three, they poulenge you
- 1:33:33Speaker 6: in the offensive glass. They're just just they're They're a
- 1:33:37Speaker 6: great team, and so a lot concerns me. I feel
- 1:33:40Speaker 6: we're a great team too, and we're excited for the challenge,
- 1:33:43Speaker 6: but a ton of respect for coach Sampson and what
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: he's done, and then their team of how connected and
- 1:33:48Speaker 6: how tough they are.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: And one of those tough players is Juwan Roberts, who
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: played like a legitimate All American for most of the season.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: Between Midjanuary early February, he averaged almost seventy and seven
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: while playing almost thirty five minutes a game.
- 1:34:04Speaker 13: Now.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: He suffered an ankle injury in early February and struggled
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: over the next thirteen games. He missed two games in
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: the Big twelve tournament with that ankle injury as well
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: in the last two games he struggled with foul trouble
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: on top of that. These are the things that the
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: Cougars have to clean up if they want to advance
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: past Duke and have a matchup with either Florida or Alburn,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: which is an interesting matchup to say the least. Alburn
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: and Florida two teams out of the sec who have
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: battled for supremacy in the conference. And again it's an
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: Auburn team led by again a relatively older group and
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: an older head coach in Bruce Pearl. They're one in
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: three down the stretch going into the NCAA tournament. A
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: lot of people were questioning how good they would be
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: come tournament time, and we heard when we talked to
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: Crag the guys out in Vegas aren't so high on
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: Alburn even though they're the number one overall seed. This
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: is the best final four according to Ken Palm ever
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: point blank period of the top ten Ken Pom scores.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: These four teams, these four to one seeds who are
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: playing in the final four in San Antonio, the first
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: time we've gotten four to one seeds since two thousand
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: and eight. This tournament and these games on Saturday will
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: be some of the best games of the season. If
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: it shakes out the way that we think it will.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: I'm beyond excited. I picked Duke to win the entire
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: thing at the beginning of March. I've since after listening
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: to Calvin Sampson all week, after listening to the way
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: that the Duke players have talked and really listening to
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: some of the smarter guys, and maybe it's just that
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: Texas biased. I'm leaning on the Cougars in tomorrow's matchup,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: and then for Florida and Alburn, I think Bruce Pearl
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: has this team kicking at all on all cylinders.
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: I'm going to Alburn.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: I'm going Houston over Auburn in the National Championship on Monday.
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: All right, when we come back, we'll wrap up our
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: three and The Craigway Show and gear you up for
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: tonight's Final four matchup between Texas and South Carolina. All
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: coming up next on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew Zimmel hanging
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: out with you. Wrapping up a Friday edition of The
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: Craigway Show. Craig will be back on Monday, Win Loser
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: draw joining the program, taking back over sitting in the
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: big chair. I'm glad that I was able to keep
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: the seat warm. Cameron Parker will be with him as well.
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: Cameron calls Saturday's matchup as Texas and Georgia face off
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: in the SEC, the second home series for the Texas Longhorns.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: Talk about good games happening at the dish. First LSU
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: comes into town. Now Georgia comes into town. David Salizman
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: and Mike Hardball arch on the call tonight six fifteen airtime,
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: six thirty, first pitch on one oh three one, Austin's
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: eighty station. Check it out on the free iHeartRadio app
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: And while you're there, make that one of the presets
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: the zone should be your number one. Preset one O
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: three one should be your number two because that is
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: where Texas baseball will play for the rest of the season.
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: And then ninety eight point one tonight is where you
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: can hear Texas women's basketball. Speaking of let's hear from
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: the head coach, Vick Schaeffer as they gear up for
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: what will be one of the best matchups of the season.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: This is the fourth time that these two teams have played.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: How important is it, coach, that you have experience in
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: the final four? How important is it that you are
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: been there before, You've done that to get to this
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: point and try to win this championship for Texas.
- 1:37:53Speaker 9: You know, I told them the other night after we
- 1:37:55Speaker 9: won in Birmingham, we got on the airplane and before
- 1:37:58Speaker 9: we took off, because I knew they were going to
- 1:38:00Speaker 9: go to sleep, and we weren't going to land till
- 1:38:01Speaker 9: two fifteen.
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: I said, we're.
- 1:38:05Speaker 9: Going to land, You're going to go home, wash clothes,
- 1:38:07Speaker 9: and we're getting right back on the airplane. I said,
- 1:38:09Speaker 9: from that moment on, you will not have a minute
- 1:38:13Speaker 9: to yourself. I said, I realized you want to see
- 1:38:16Speaker 9: your families. They're going to be with you. But I'm
- 1:38:18Speaker 9: going to need y'all to really try to If you
- 1:38:21Speaker 9: get an hour, if you get two hours, you need
- 1:38:24Speaker 9: to have that time to yourself. You need to take
- 1:38:26Speaker 9: a nap, you need to refresh mentally.
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: As well as physically.
- 1:38:31Speaker 9: And you know you can visit with family when you're
- 1:38:33Speaker 9: done with spring semester. Not take wanting to take away
- 1:38:38Speaker 9: from any of that, because I know all my kids
- 1:38:40Speaker 9: of their families are here, and certainly I want them
- 1:38:42Speaker 9: to enjoy that. But you just get pulled from so
- 1:38:45Speaker 9: many areas, so many different directions, and I just want
- 1:38:51Speaker 9: them to you know, we had a tough regional.
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: I mean, we had to play.
- 1:38:56Speaker 9: Another team from the SEC in Tennessee is playing very
- 1:39:00Speaker 9: well and is a really good team.
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: Had a knockdown drag out with them.
- 1:39:04Speaker 9: Then we had to go up against TCU, who's a
- 1:39:07Speaker 9: conference champion. As Rory said, offensively, their efficiencies off the chart.
- 1:39:13Speaker 9: Got a seventh year player on their team, a fifth
- 1:39:16Speaker 9: year player on their team. That's their two best players.
- 1:39:19Speaker 9: So we knew we had a challenge there. And obviously
- 1:39:23Speaker 9: if you watch that game Monday night, you saw how
- 1:39:25Speaker 9: hard my kids played. So yeah, it's something that was
- 1:39:31Speaker 9: on my mind from as soon as it was over.
- 1:39:33Speaker 9: And I had to tell my staff too, we have
- 1:39:37Speaker 9: to really try to lock in and really close the
- 1:39:42Speaker 9: doors and lock out the distractions if he will, and it's.
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: Hard to do.
- 1:39:46Speaker 9: And again for my kids, I want them to enjoy this.
- 1:39:48Speaker 9: I mean, you guys don't know this. Every time they
- 1:39:52Speaker 9: walk in a room somewhere, there's something they're waiting for.
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: Yeah, tonight, what's waiting for them is the University of
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: South Carolina that they've faced off against three times this season.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: To lock in now, Texas beat South Carolina a couple
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: of years back. This couple months back, they snapped a
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: fifty seven game SEC regular season win streak. South Carolina
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: is vulnerable. In that loss in January, that loss in
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: I guess February, the Gamecocks went a cold, poor shot
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: selection turned the ball over in that earlier loss. Multiple
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: players got in defouled trouble as well, and Texas's defense
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: is as formidable as advertised. This is a great defensive team.
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: Ry Harmon talked about when she got recruited what Vick
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: Schaefer's plan was for her. Did you know you were
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: going to be playing forty minutes of defense to night.
- 1:40:47Speaker 17: I don't think he had to stress it to me,
- 1:40:49Speaker 17: because I think he saw that I was already doing it.
- 1:40:53Speaker 17: I've been playing defense for quite some time high school
- 1:40:57Speaker 17: and leading up to this point. But that's the reason
- 1:40:59Speaker 17: why I chose to come here, and we're part of
- 1:41:01Speaker 17: the reason why I chose come Here's because he took
- 1:41:03Speaker 17: that much pride in defense, and I was already showing
- 1:41:06Speaker 17: that at a young age that I really did care
- 1:41:08Speaker 17: about defense and I understood the fundamentals of defense. Obviously,
- 1:41:12Speaker 17: I didn't know everything then, and I just completely just
- 1:41:15Speaker 17: learned a whole new wave of defense here. But yeah,
- 1:41:18Speaker 17: he didn't He didn't have to really like preach that
- 1:41:21Speaker 17: to me, honestly, because he knew I hadn't.
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: No.
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: Obviously, these players love their head coach and their head
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: coach talks about how much he loves this team and
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: these players. Ry Harmon got asked, but how bad they
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: want to win this final four game against South Carolina
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: not only for themselves but for Vic Schaefer.
- 1:41:40Speaker 17: Yeah, obviously he's how many seven out of the eight
- 1:41:44Speaker 17: years in lead eight, So I think getting to the
- 1:41:47Speaker 17: tournament is one thing, and then you're getting to the
- 1:41:50Speaker 17: lead eight and then now we're in the final four.
- 1:41:52Speaker 17: But obviously he's been here before. That just means a lot,
- 1:41:56Speaker 17: Like that's kind of why we come to Texas because
- 1:41:58Speaker 17: he knows how to win, like he's quite legendary. And
- 1:42:01Speaker 17: so when we look at these games coming up, and
- 1:42:07Speaker 17: obviously we wanted for ourselves, but someone who like sacrifices
- 1:42:10Speaker 17: like spending family time and sacrifices to sleep sometimes most times,
- 1:42:15Speaker 17: and you know stuff like that, Like it's so hard
- 1:42:18Speaker 17: for us to just.
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: Not want to do it for him, Like we.
- 1:42:21Speaker 17: Gotta not be so kind of tied up in ourselves
- 1:42:24Speaker 17: and wanting the success for ourselves, but we have to
- 1:42:26Speaker 17: show our respect and appreciation for him and of course
- 1:42:30Speaker 17: the rest.
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: Of URK, which is great. You gotta show respect to
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: your head coach, gotta show respect to your opponent. Now,
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: the big matchup tonight that will decide this game, At
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: least in my mind, the deciding matchup will be Rehaul
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: versus Madison Booker.
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: The winner of this.
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: Matchup now, Texas is Madison Booker SEC player of the
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: year in the win against South Carolina this season, twenty
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: points on seven of twenty two shooting. It helped out
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: by Taylor Jones and Kyla Oldacre cleaning up the glass
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: and playing good down low. But Bree Hall will be
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: the primary defender on Madison Booker tonight. What do you
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: think of Hall and what do you think of the
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: South Carolina team?
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: She's a great defender.
- 1:43:16Speaker 16: I mean, it's kind of shocked she wasn't on like
- 1:43:18Speaker 16: the like the like our companies, like defensive team or
- 1:43:21Speaker 16: anything like that. Long lean athletic. She definitely, you know,
- 1:43:26Speaker 16: makes you think on the court as an officive player.
- 1:43:29Speaker 16: Oh yeah, she's a great player. I totally have alma
- 1:43:31Speaker 16: respect her. Definitely don't make me think, like I say,
- 1:43:35Speaker 16: a great player.
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: No bulletin board material here, Texas's Madison Booker making the
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: smart decision, not giving them anything to gear up your
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: opponent any more than they're already geared up for this
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: Final four matchup. Now Texas plays tonight kived FM ninety
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: eight to one, Aritime five forty five six pm.
- 1:43:54Speaker 10: Tip.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: Craig Way will be on the call from Tampa Bay.
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: I like the Longhorns of this one. On the other
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: side of the bracket, Yukon has been rolling. Give me
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: Yukon and Texas in the National Championship on Sunday. That's
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: what I'm pumped up for. That's what we're looking forward
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: to until next time. Creig will be back in the
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: chair on Monday. Cameron Parker will be with him as well.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: I will see you on the other side. I don't
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: know when the next time we're gonna talk, but when
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: the next time we do talk, we'll talk Texas baseball
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: because they have a big matchup this weekend against Georgia
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: six fifteen air time, six point thirty first pitch Hardball.
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: Harge is on the call, Austin Dating station one oh
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: three to one. We'll see you next time. Until next time,
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: I'm Andrew Zimmel. I'm not wrong, I'm just early.
- 1:44:40Speaker 10: Pete
