- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Everyone who says they want to go into the fashion industry means one of two things.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: They either want to be a designer with their own label or they want to sew.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: But the funny thing is, these two are the most crowded in the entire industry when there are 14 different ways of getting into the fashion industry.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: So before this episode is over, I will break down to you all those 14 ways and also let you know how you in particular can get in.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Because I know there are four types of people who are watching me right now.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: There's the person with nothing who's looking for a way to get in.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: There's the one with small savings, there's the person who has a stable job, steady income, looking for a side hustle.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And then the fourth type of person is the one with real money looking to invest.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: So by the time this convo is over, you will know how you can fit in the fashion industry.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: So a dress passes so many hands before somebody finally wears it.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: There's the person cutting the cloth, there's the person bringing it into the country, there's the person sewing it, there's the person photographing from the person selling.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: So many ways of being in the industry.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And with each way, I will break down to you what the business is, how to get it done, and the type of person who can do that business.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: The first business in the fashion industry is fabric importing and wholesale.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So now this is the person who brings the fabric by container into the country and sells it wholesale.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: So you're selling to the fabric shops, to the market traders, you're selling wax prints, plain cotton, linens, lace, any types of fabric.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: The type of person to do this business is one with real money because it takes quite an amount to be able to import them in bulk.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And the revenue does come in slowly because you import it in containers and sell over time.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: However, it's very profitable when you are able to do this business.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: So real money brings you real revenue.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: The second way of getting in the industry is the fabric retail shop.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: So after it's been brought in bulk, the fabric people sell it to the tailors, to individuals who are preparing for weddings, funerals, ceremonies, sell it to the designers.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So your job is to take it in smaller quantities and then sell it to those who are going to use it to create the clothes.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So who is for?
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Is for the kind of person with a steady job, with steady income, because there is a real investment, but it's not too big of an investment.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: The revenue comes in steadily, revenue comes in week by week.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So it's something that as soon as you start investing, you should start to see some money coming in.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Now, the third way into the industry is trims and habadashery.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I didn't hear that word till I did the research.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Habadashery.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: So trims and habadashery are those who deal with zips, buttons, thread, linings, interfacing, elastic, hooks, labels, you know, all the tiny elements in every garment.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: You know, these things are needed in every part of the fashion industry, but nobody's thinking about who's making it, who's dealing with it.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: It is a whole business on its own.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: You can decide to concentrate on this.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: The good job, the good, the good news is you don't need too much of an investment to get in here.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: It's just the one with the little savings, and you can start your trims business or your habadashery business.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: The fourth way to enter the industry is through hand woven cloth.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So things like Kinte and Ashoke and other hand woven cloth.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So this is the people who are weaving cloth for weddings, funerals, ceremonies, and increasingly for designers who want something nobody else has.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: So this is for the person with a little savings and who is willing to learn the loom and other ways of being able to weave, or for the person who is willing to pay weavers to do the job for them.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: So you can either be the person owning the business or you can enter with your skill as an apprentice weaver, as a weaver exclusively for designers, or just run a workshop of weavers.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: The fifth way of entering in the industry is dyeing and printing.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Now, this is tie and dye, batik, adire, and screen printing onto plain cloth.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: So basically, you buy fabric plain and cheap, and then you print a design onto it to sell.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: So the person is for is the one with small savings because you need to be able to buy your plain cloths and also buy what you need to be able to print on it to sell directly.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: You can also enter inside with your skills.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: You can work in a dyeing workshop, you can sell your skill for printing inside the business, or you can be the one owning the business.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Either way that you choose, dyeing and printing is a good way to enter into the fashion industry.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Now, the sixth way to enter the industry is what everybody means when they say I'm in the fashion industry, which is tailoring and bespoke sewing.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: So this is the person who takes the measurement, cuts, sews, and delivers a finished garment made for one person.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Most people who say I'm in the fashion industry are doing this, especially because you can start with nothing, especially because people can pay you in advance to start the job, which means you don't need actual capital to start.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: But of course, as you build up more capital, you buy machines, you hire apprentices, and you grow in the business.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Now, the seventh business is pattern making and sample development.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: So now when a designer wants to be able to grow from making bespoke and now making for more people with the exact same design, they need a pattern making, they need a pattern maker to take their idea and create the sample, which can now be used to make the same thing over and over again.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: So this is a completely different business from actually sewing, and every band, every brand that wants to make more than one thing needs this.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Now, to get this done, you only need skills, you need almost no money whatsoever.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: You just need the skill of being able to create the pattern perfectly to the designer's taste.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Now, the eighth way to enter into the industry, which is very common, but most people don't know about, is sewing for other brands.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: So most of the time, when you go to a designer, the designer is the visionary, but they take that design to somebody who's going to sew it the way that they want.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: So in this case, you, the person sewing for the other brands, don't need to look for customers.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: You don't need to design, you just need to execute what has been brought to you in a timely and efficient manner.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: So this is either for the person who's saved up a bit and is able to do this with their spare time.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Let's say you have a steady job and you're doing this in your spare time, or the one with real money who can hire a lot of people to be sewing at a very fast pace.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Now, the ninth way is what I would like to call 360, which is you own your own clothing label.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Because when you have your own clothing label, you design it, you produce it, you brand it, and you sell it under your own name.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: So this is ready to wear.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And instead of bespoke and doing it direct for the person, this is somebody just goes and picks up your label.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, we have a lot of these examples, so I don't even need to go into that.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: The person this is for is the one with steady income or the one with a lot to invest, because it is quite intensive when it comes to investment, but the rewards are also very high if you get it right.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Because once you build a brand and once you market it properly, people will always want to purchase your clothing label.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Now, the 10th way to enter the industry, which I've seen a lot of you know the girlies doing these days, is selling clothes online.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Now, with this one, no producing, no sewing, no shop, no rent.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: You just take photographs, post it, attract customers, and sell it.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Sometimes what some people even do is they don't even buy it in advance, they just take the pictures, and once they get a customer, then they buy it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: So it's a very low entry place into the industry.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: And if you've been able to build some marketing strength for yourself, if you have a brand that makes people want to listen to what you say, it's a very fast way to enter into the fashion industry before you decide to get into one of the other businesses.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: So it's for the one with almost nothing yet, you just need your phone and you know 2,000 TikTok followers.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: The 11th way to enter the industry is called the secondhand clothing trade.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: So, with this one, you buy bales of imported secondhand clothing, you open them, sort them out, choose what you like, and you sell them.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Some decide to sell them individually, some also decide to sell them in bulk.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: It's a very low way of entering the industry as well.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: You need just a little savings to be able to buy the bill and then you push it out consistently.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: So it's an easy way to start.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: You can save up and buy a single bill, or if you have money, you can buy in bulk.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: The risk, however, with this is that buying a bill is a bit of a gamble because you don't know what is in it when you are buying it.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Unlike selling clothes online where you choose one particular item and you know that people will want to buy this.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: When you are buying a bill, you could either hit the jackpot and have a lot of good things in it, or most of it can be unusable.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: So it's a gamble, and when it pays off, it pays off well.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: When it doesn't, sorry, bro.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Number 12 is sewing machine sales and repair.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Now, everybody in the industry is using sewing machines, but who's selling it, who's repairing it, who's making sure you always have access to it.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: That could be you.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Instead of being the person in the front end of the industry, you can be in the back end making sure everybody in the industry needs you.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: For the person repairing, you don't need to be someone with anything yet, you just need the skills to enter the industry.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: However, for the person who is ready to sell, you need to have some savings to be able to buy enough machines and market it, sell, make your profits, and keep going on and on.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: 13th way of entering the fashion industry is fashion photography and content.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Now, everybody claims to be able to do this, so to get it right, you need to make sure you are special.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: But there's a lot of money to be made in photographing and videography for the fashion industry, be it taking clothes to post online to sell, or taking bespoke clothing or a label about to release a particular collection and you do their photo shoot and their content shoots and everything.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: The better you get at the skill, the more you can attract somebody higher up the food chain in the industry.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: It's something which actually brings steady income because there are lots of people in the industry who are looking for this service.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: So if you decide to specialize in the photography and videography in the fashion industry, it can be a strong skill for you and a great way of bringing in good revenue.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Now, the final way of entering the industry is textile waste and upcycling.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Now, a lot of the secondhand clothing that arrives here ends up not being used, end up just going to waste.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: So your job is to collect it, sort it out, and turn it into something with value, be it remade garments, patchwork pieces, bags, cleaning cloths, stuffing, anything that can be of a little value, and then you resell it.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: So it's a low entry point, you don't need much to get into it because somebody is looking to get rid of their waste anyway.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: The profit margin isn't too big, but it all depends on your creativity and how you are able to turn the waste into real value.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: So I hope after listening to this, if you're interested in the fashion industry, you have found a particular place where you can enter the industry today to figure out how you can make money without being just like everybody else.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: And I also hope that I've brought you one step closer to being the mastermind I know you deserve to be.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Don't just watch, don't just listen, and don't just take in what we've said.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: You need to practice everything that I'm trying to teach you into your real life because the journey of becoming a mastermind is not just about knowledge, but it's also about putting it into practice.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: And let's grow the community, let's build a community of masterminds who are ready to shape the world into what we know it should be.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Of course, share this, like it, and let me know in the comments if there's anything that you want me to talk about, if there's any guests that you want me to have a conversation with, so we grow together.
