- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to Jagsam. I'm kind Annie Stevens back here with
- 0:19Speaker 1: us for free agency week. It's a big week in
- 0:21Speaker 1: the NFL, and a big splash of course already right
- 0:23Speaker 1: out of the gate for the Jaguars. Brian Text and
- 0:26Speaker 1: John Oder are with me as we react to some
- 0:27Speaker 1: of those reported IS signings so far. Our big thing
- 0:30Speaker 1: number one today is going to be big splash because
- 0:33Speaker 1: last year we felt the Jaguars didn't do a ton
- 0:34Speaker 1: in free agency. They kind of tried to rework what
- 0:37Speaker 1: they had the season before. But they are not wasting
- 0:40Speaker 1: any time in free agency this time around. Brian, a
- 0:43Speaker 1: lot of names reportedly coming to this team. Of course
- 0:45Speaker 1: they're not official until Wednesday, but maybe five or six
- 0:48Speaker 1: players that we know of. What was the biggest name
- 0:50Speaker 1: that stood out to you.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Mitch Morse, And I'm sure that doesn't surprise you because
- 0:53Speaker 2: of the way that I have harped on the interior
- 0:56Speaker 2: offensive line and the lack of push that Luke Fortner
- 0:59Speaker 2: get this team. Last year, they were amongst the worst
- 1:02Speaker 2: teams in the league on third down and short three
- 1:04Speaker 2: yards or less, and on the most important play of
- 1:07Speaker 2: the season, that fourth and goal from the one in Tennessee.
- 1:10Speaker 3: They got pushed backwards.
- 1:11Speaker 2: So bringing in a veteran guy who was in the
- 1:13Speaker 2: Pro Bowl in twenty twenty two, has been with both
- 1:15Speaker 2: Kansas City and Buffalo. Mitch Morris is a name that
- 1:18Speaker 2: caught my attention because he's a veteran presence that you
- 1:21Speaker 2: can count on in the middle of the line. He
- 1:23Speaker 2: and Sheriff and whoever is at that left guard. It's
- 1:25Speaker 2: going to be Cleveland right. Last year they had a
- 1:27Speaker 2: lot of turnover there, but it gives you a veteran
- 1:30Speaker 2: presence in the middle of that line and a guy
- 1:31Speaker 2: who's proven a John.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought this was obviously the one they needed
- 1:34Speaker 4: to do.
- 1:35Speaker 5: I'll go a different direction for the sake of not
- 1:37Speaker 5: going the same direction as Ryan Gabe Davis wide receiver
- 1:40Speaker 5: from Buffalo. Obviously, I think he fits into what they're doing.
- 1:47Speaker 5: I don't know that this team needs a quote true
- 1:51Speaker 5: number one in this offense. They really didn't have a
- 1:53Speaker 5: true number one in twenty twenty two. Everything sort of
- 1:56Speaker 5: fit together. Trevor Lawrence didn't feel pressure to go to
- 1:59Speaker 5: any particular receias that year. Maybe they're getting back to
- 2:03Speaker 5: that where the ball can just sort of go organically
- 2:06Speaker 5: I think Gay Davis gives you deep speed.
- 2:09Speaker 4: He gives you big playability.
- 2:11Speaker 5: I don't know that he's going to give you a
- 2:12Speaker 5: thousand yards he's never done that, but he gives you
- 2:15Speaker 5: sixteen point seven reception, and that stretches the field. Christian
- 2:19Speaker 5: Kirk and Evan Ingram can work underneath. Maybe that's the
- 2:21Speaker 5: way to go. I don't know about cal Ridley yet,
- 2:23Speaker 5: but if all you have going in is Zay Jones, Davis,
- 2:28Speaker 5: Kirk and Ingram, that's a fourth theme you can work with.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I would think that when you look at a hybrid situation,
- 2:33Speaker 2: you've got Ingram and Kirk, who are clearly the number one.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Guys, the guys who the quarterback depends on.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Ky.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I like Davis because he does have that size that
- 2:42Speaker 2: the Jaguars would like to have on the perimeter, a
- 2:45Speaker 2: guy you can throw the fifty to fifty ball up
- 2:46Speaker 2: to and expect that he'll come down with it.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Two Buffalo Bills heading south to Jacksonville will report that officially,
- 2:51Speaker 1: of course, for you on Wednesday. Our second big thing
- 2:54Speaker 1: today is not done yet, John, you mentioned it. Calvin Ridley.
- 2:57Speaker 1: We haven't heard any news about him, right, Just yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 1: that is no news good news right now? Does that
- 3:02Speaker 1: mean he might still be coming back to Jacksonville or
- 3:04Speaker 1: do you think he's had it elsewhere?
- 3:05Speaker 5: Well, sort of the way you said, no news isn't
- 3:09Speaker 5: bad news. Sure, so that's okay. I think they're in
- 3:13Speaker 5: a good situation with Calvin where if it's Gabe Davis
- 3:18Speaker 5: and Christian Kirk and Evan Ingram and then you retain
- 3:21Speaker 5: Za Jones, I think you're okay with that. If you
- 3:24Speaker 5: can bring back Calvin at a number that makes sense,
- 3:26Speaker 5: where it fits, where it's whatever kind of contract will
- 3:29Speaker 5: work out for both sides, it makes sense too.
- 3:31Speaker 4: So they've pulled it. They've sort of put themselves.
- 3:33Speaker 5: In that situation where they don't use a draft term Ryan,
- 3:36Speaker 5: they don't have to reach for Calvin. Really now, if
- 3:39Speaker 5: it works, it works, I'd be a little surprised, but
- 3:42Speaker 5: I've been surprised before, you.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Know, I would be surprised if he came back.
- 3:45Speaker 2: They went right after receiver in Gabe Davis, and that was,
- 3:50Speaker 2: you know, the first indicator. But I do know this,
- 3:53Speaker 2: when you get to day one of the open negotiating
- 3:56Speaker 2: window and you're not getting a lot of action, it
- 3:58Speaker 2: kind of sets the market and what we had heard
- 4:01Speaker 2: was was that Ridley was going to have a chance
- 4:04Speaker 2: and want to be a highly paid, productive receiver somewhere,
- 4:08Speaker 2: clearly the number one, but he didn't get any action
- 4:11Speaker 2: on day one. Maybe it changes here on day two
- 4:13Speaker 2: and he comes up with that big deal, But perhaps
- 4:15Speaker 2: his market is closer to what the Jaguars thought.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It was than what his representation thought it was.
- 4:20Speaker 5: And Ky, what I wonder is, you know, I got
- 4:23Speaker 5: the sense late in the season and this is purely
- 4:25Speaker 5: gone off a couple of conversations where I was one
- 4:27Speaker 5: of many people on Calvin. I got the idea he
- 4:29Speaker 5: wanted to come back. Maybe there's three or four teams involved,
- 4:35Speaker 5: and there's not a number out there that's just blowing
- 4:37Speaker 5: Jaguars out of the water. And he keeps saying, you
- 4:40Speaker 5: know what, you know, I like being down there. Speculation
- 4:44Speaker 5: at this point obviously, but maybe.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And something else to consider, Kay is the Jaguars and
- 4:48Speaker 2: I don't know all the numbers of the players they
- 4:50Speaker 2: signed yesterday, but you know they didn't have much cap
- 4:53Speaker 2: from about seventeen million dollars and they still got to
- 4:55Speaker 2: sign their class. You've got Josh Allen hanging with twenty
- 4:58Speaker 2: four million dollars on the French and then you also
- 5:01Speaker 2: have the opportunity perhaps to do something with the quarterback
- 5:04Speaker 2: to bring the cap numbers down so that you can
- 5:07Speaker 2: create opportunity if you want to go and play a
- 5:10Speaker 2: little bit more, or to find Calvin Ridley room if
- 5:12Speaker 2: he's still out there. So the Jaguars still have decisions
- 5:15Speaker 2: they've got to be making and plans they've got to
- 5:18Speaker 2: be laying out with respect to number forty one and
- 5:22Speaker 2: number sixteen.
- 5:24Speaker 1: An ion for sure, both of those things that were
- 5:26Speaker 1: Josh Allen.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Long as well.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Our final big thing today is going to be draft decisions.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So we saw them do a ton of free agency
- 5:32Speaker 1: on Day one essentially, and what does that mean for
- 5:35Speaker 1: the draft. Ran We've been talking about the areas of need,
- 5:37Speaker 1: but they've addressed a couple of those places. So how
- 5:39Speaker 1: does this affect maybe where they go in the first round.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Well, this kids have the ability to take whoever they want.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Right they feel like they've got three offensive tackles. Now,
- 5:47Speaker 2: they've got two guys that can compete at center. They've
- 5:49Speaker 2: got a number of guards. Where you bring Cooper Hodges
- 5:51Speaker 2: back to the equation this year, same thing you bring
- 5:53Speaker 2: in Ronald Darby, they really like Christian Braswell, who didn't
- 5:57Speaker 2: get to play last year very much. They've got some
- 6:00Speaker 2: numbers at corner, they've got some numbers at safety. So really, John,
- 6:03Speaker 2: you're in the position where if you're sitting at seventeen
- 6:07Speaker 2: and there's a defensive tackle you like you could take
- 6:09Speaker 2: him right. You don't have to lean into cornerback because
- 6:12Speaker 2: you let Darius Williams go. You don't have to lean
- 6:15Speaker 2: into receiver because you didn't re sign Calvin Ridley. It
- 6:19Speaker 2: lets them make that best available player choice.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Well, every GM wants to be able to line up
- 6:23Speaker 5: the day before the draft, meaning you don't have to
- 6:25Speaker 5: go reach for a guy you don't have to plug
- 6:26Speaker 5: then as a starter. I still feel like maybe corner
- 6:30Speaker 5: is a spot that is similar to what tackle was
- 6:34Speaker 5: last year, where you looked at it and said, you know,
- 6:38Speaker 5: maybe they don't have to go get Anton Harrison, but boy,
- 6:41Speaker 5: they need that spot on the offensive line. To me,
- 6:44Speaker 5: corner still feels that that this puts them in a
- 6:46Speaker 5: situation where if they're not feeling at number seventeen, as
- 6:49Speaker 5: you said, if there is what they consider an impact
- 6:52Speaker 5: player somewhere else, you can go another.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Direction certainly be interesting. We'll have a couple of weeks
- 6:56Speaker 1: to talk that over. But free agency is upon us
- 6:59Speaker 1: in a lot of name allegedly heading to Jacksonville. We're
- 7:02Speaker 1: going to talk over all of those right after we
- 7:04Speaker 1: come back from the break. Here on jags am, Move
- 7:11Speaker 1: the Freight, Move the Freight. Magellan Transport was voted the
- 7:14Speaker 1: cools office space in Jacksonville. You can apply online at
- 7:16Speaker 1: www dot Magellan Logistics dot com. Back here on jags
- 7:21Speaker 1: Am in Houndai Studios. I'm happy to be back with
- 7:24Speaker 1: my friends.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Did you guys, miss me, you've been gone a couple
- 7:26Speaker 3: of weeks?
- 7:27Speaker 1: Did you have been fighting? Have you been getting along?
- 7:30Speaker 4: Did you go somewhere?
- 7:31Speaker 1: Oh?
- 7:33Speaker 4: No, we get along? Fine, Yeah, we really did. It's great.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Right, you're back on the same side of the couch.
- 7:38Speaker 1: This is trouble. A lot going on, and my first
- 7:41Speaker 1: day back at work yesterday reported signings. Of course, nothing
- 7:45Speaker 1: official until Wednesday, but we do get, you know, the
- 7:47Speaker 1: legal tampering periods, so we get a little more.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Are open negotiating window and I like that term, better.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Open negotiating wind you Yeah, I mean they already knew it.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Let's be honest, everybody already knew what they were doing
- 7:57Speaker 1: before the tampering.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Is now before the open negotiation window.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Okay, God, open negotiation window. So I mean we talked
- 8:04Speaker 1: him a little bit about maybe the names that stand
- 8:05Speaker 1: out obviously those two Buffalo Bills. But there they went.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I mean this kind of a little bit reminiscent of
- 8:10Speaker 1: maybe two years ago. I mean when Doug Peterson first
- 8:12Speaker 1: got here. They kind of went out and got some
- 8:13Speaker 1: people to address some needs.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they didn't because they couldn't splash as heavy as
- 8:18Speaker 2: they might have done a couple of years ago. They
- 8:20Speaker 2: just don't have the cap room to be able to
- 8:21Speaker 2: do it. But as John mentioned that, you know they
- 8:23Speaker 2: were lining up, they were putting bodies in place. You know,
- 8:26Speaker 2: Darnell Savage is a guy who was the nineteenth pick
- 8:29Speaker 2: for the first round the year that the Packers took him,
- 8:32Speaker 2: had a couple of good years with them, had a
- 8:33Speaker 2: couple of years where he wasn't quite as productive, and
- 8:35Speaker 2: they were willing to let him walk. So you hope
- 8:37Speaker 2: that you go and capture a young guy who still
- 8:40Speaker 2: got plenty of upside and development and may fit in
- 8:43Speaker 2: your system. The thing that strikes me about most of
- 8:46Speaker 2: these guys. Is is that you were bringing in guys
- 8:49Speaker 2: who have to come in at a lower cap number.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:52Speaker 3: The demand might not have been.
- 8:53Speaker 2: There on the market, but the Jaguars wanted him, and
- 8:55Speaker 2: that's what's important, Especially with a guy like Savage. You've
- 8:58Speaker 2: got a new defensive coordinator who's bringing in a new
- 9:00Speaker 2: scheme and you need guys who can do what he
- 9:02Speaker 2: wants them to do.
- 9:03Speaker 5: I think Darby fits that as well, and so does Savage.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Look ideally, you're not bringing in this many free agents.
- 9:10Speaker 5: I mean, you know, I'm gonna shout at the clouds
- 9:12Speaker 5: a little bit, but you'd rather be getting these guys
- 9:15Speaker 5: through the draft. Credit them for looking at and saying,
- 9:17Speaker 5: you know what, we drafted Fortner, but we've got to
- 9:19Speaker 5: fix the center issue, not.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Hanging on to that.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Credit to him, Gabe Davis. To me, all all these
- 9:30Speaker 5: guys sort of fit it what I like in this sense,
- 9:33Speaker 5: you're not playing at the high end of free agency,
- 9:36Speaker 5: where you're absolutely crippling yourself if you don't work.
- 9:42Speaker 4: There.
- 9:43Speaker 5: I would term this as maybe the very very end
- 9:47Speaker 5: of the first wave of free agency. I'd rather play
- 9:49Speaker 5: in the second wave if you had to play in
- 9:50Speaker 5: the first wave, play at this level.
- 9:52Speaker 4: All these guys make sense.
- 9:55Speaker 5: And I will say this the one thing about them
- 9:58Speaker 5: going after free agents in three or four years, Trent
- 10:03Speaker 5: is very, very very good at.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Picking the right free agents.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:07Speaker 5: They've had more success with free agency than any team
- 10:11Speaker 5: I've been around, Jaguars, Colts, whatever. So there's a high
- 10:15Speaker 5: percentage chance these guys fit right, you know.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Kay, we're talking about free agency day one, right, and
- 10:20Speaker 2: the guys the DAGs brought in, and we're going to
- 10:21Speaker 2: turn to the draft really quickly, but we shouldn't forget
- 10:25Speaker 2: that in between. That is maybe the most important component
- 10:28Speaker 2: and that's all the draft picks they had last year, right,
- 10:30Speaker 2: all the guys you know, Tyler Lacy and Cooper Hodges
- 10:34Speaker 2: and Eric Hallett and Christian Braswell. I mean, these are
- 10:38Speaker 2: guys that you brought in to be jars on the shelf,
- 10:41Speaker 2: developmental guys. You didn't need them last year, but you
- 10:45Speaker 2: need them this year and next year. As you're paying
- 10:47Speaker 2: Josh Allen and you're paying Trevor, you're gonna pay some
- 10:51Speaker 2: of these guys. So you need low cost guys who
- 10:54Speaker 2: can come in and play like starters. And I don't
- 10:57Speaker 2: want people to forget that that group last year is
- 11:00Speaker 2: big for a reason because they needed bodies, many many
- 11:03Speaker 2: developmental guys. And that's to me, other than Mitch Morse,
- 11:08Speaker 2: that draft classroom last year is more important than everyone
- 11:11Speaker 2: else that they signed.
- 11:12Speaker 5: It's very important. Is Antonio Johnson good? Is Parker Washington good?
- 11:15Speaker 3: Yes?
- 11:15Speaker 4: Cooper Hidge as we keep hearing about.
- 11:17Speaker 3: And bendro Miller come back and be a key linebacker
- 11:20Speaker 3: for you.
- 11:20Speaker 5: I do wonder with Cooper Hodges, had he been healthy
- 11:23Speaker 5: last year, maybe their equation on the offensive line is different.
- 11:27Speaker 5: That's sort of I think handcuff them a little bit.
- 11:29Speaker 5: They love Cooper Hodges, but he didn't play, so it's
- 11:32Speaker 5: hard to say, hey, this is our guy going forward.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Go.
- 11:34Speaker 1: It'll be interesting to see what he's able to do
- 11:36Speaker 1: in training camp. Obviously, work his way, and they've added
- 11:38Speaker 1: at center there with Mitch Morse. I made a little
- 11:40Speaker 1: to do list for us here on JACKSXAM, I did
- 11:42Speaker 1: an off season to do list. Obviously Number one is
- 11:45Speaker 1: signed Josh Allen to a long term deal. That one
- 11:47Speaker 1: has yet to get checked off.
- 11:49Speaker 2: But you know the cost now we now know because
- 11:50Speaker 2: Brian Burdeny's got a huge deal. The Giants one hundred
- 11:54Speaker 2: and fifty million eighty seven point seven guaranteed, and I
- 11:57Speaker 2: think it pushes him over thirty million dollars a year average.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Okay, that's what it costs now for Josh Allen.
- 12:02Speaker 5: But my guess is that's what happened at the deadline
- 12:05Speaker 5: is the cap went up.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Josh's people in this purely speculation as people.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Look at the market and say, well, if we signed
- 12:13Speaker 5: for twenty nine million in two years, he's going to
- 12:16Speaker 5: be grossly underpaid. So they probably went to the Jaguars
- 12:19Speaker 5: and said this and Jared's no, well, we got to
- 12:21Speaker 5: see if that makes any sense. Now that they see
- 12:23Speaker 5: what it is, maybe something gets.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Done well in production wise. I mean, Josh and Brian
- 12:29Speaker 2: since they came into the league are very close in
- 12:31Speaker 2: terms of the number of overall sacks. And last year
- 12:33Speaker 2: Brian Burns on a bad team had twelve and a
- 12:36Speaker 2: half sacks and on a pretty decent team, pretty good team,
- 12:39Speaker 2: Josh Allen had seventeen and a half.
- 12:41Speaker 3: So I mean it's just if you're Josh.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Allen's people, you're putting a little bit bigger deal now
- 12:45Speaker 2: in front of Dreads and his people saying this is.
- 12:48Speaker 3: What we want.
- 12:49Speaker 1: When does this get done that? I feel like we've
- 12:50Speaker 1: been talking about this for months and it's like.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Well, you want you want the room. You need the
- 12:55Speaker 2: room to be able to do some things and have
- 12:58Speaker 2: maneuverability with your cap So I would imagine their trading
- 13:03Speaker 2: proposals here in the next week.
- 13:05Speaker 4: All right.
- 13:05Speaker 1: We talked a little bit about the O line, what
- 13:06Speaker 1: they've done there that was on our to do list,
- 13:08Speaker 1: and then adding some depth on defense. I we talked
- 13:11Speaker 1: a little bit about it, John, but I kind of
- 13:13Speaker 1: like where they added in the defensive backs to kind
- 13:15Speaker 1: of also, as you mentioned, allow these second year, third
- 13:18Speaker 1: year players of the Jags have to see what they have. Right,
- 13:20Speaker 1: Cisco's gonna be up soon, you know. On cornerback, they
- 13:24Speaker 1: didn't get really what they wanted. They let Darius go,
- 13:27Speaker 1: So we'll see what Tyson Campbell's kind of able to do,
- 13:29Speaker 1: whether he you know, he was hurt a lot last year,
- 13:31Speaker 1: if he can bounce back, whether that's someone they want
- 13:33Speaker 1: to keep long term. I think this will be a
- 13:34Speaker 1: big year on defense to kind of see what you
- 13:37Speaker 1: have and whether you want to keep that continuing next season.
- 13:40Speaker 5: Yeah, it's Tyson Campbell was sort of a lock for
- 13:44Speaker 5: an extension before last year.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Didn't play, you know, had the hamstriggen.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Yeah, the hamstring.
- 13:49Speaker 5: I don't think you can look at Tyson Campbell's season
- 13:51Speaker 5: and not fact to the hamstring and heavily. So what
- 13:54Speaker 5: they're gonna have to do next off season is they're
- 13:58Speaker 5: gonna have to figure out how cornerback's going to look.
- 14:00Speaker 5: At some point you need to draft him because it's
- 14:02Speaker 5: a young man's position, and right now they have Tyson
- 14:05Speaker 5: Campbell going into year four round derby. In year ten,
- 14:09Speaker 5: you don't know what Nicol looks like. That's why I
- 14:11Speaker 5: still think corners a big possibility at number seventeen, because
- 14:15Speaker 5: that's a position that you want to keep young because
- 14:17Speaker 5: it you know it, it is a young man spring
- 14:21Speaker 5: in the legs position. So not that Tyson's old, but
- 14:26Speaker 5: you don't know if he's coming back after this year,
- 14:28Speaker 5: so you got to make sure that position is young
- 14:31Speaker 5: and vibrant.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Like ky not us, I love.
- 14:34Speaker 1: A compliment necesarily in the morning, I'll take you.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Welcome back guy, thank you.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Final thing on my list. I kind of threw on
- 14:40Speaker 1: there because I know we have talked a little bit
- 14:41Speaker 1: about it is Trevor still part of a conversation of
- 14:44Speaker 1: something they do this year, if they really fully pushed
- 14:46Speaker 1: it to next year.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Well, I don't think you ever fully push your quarterback
- 14:49Speaker 3: to next year.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I think you're always looking at your cap from a
- 14:52Speaker 2: you know, a thirty thousand foot view and trying to
- 14:55Speaker 2: figure out when do we need to do it.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Late in summer is kind of the time we have.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Joe Burrow got his deal done.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what Mahomes got his done.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Yeah, it's usually the time because it takes it's so complex,
- 15:09Speaker 5: it's it's and it sounds silly, but it's been busy
- 15:14Speaker 5: in the last six weeks. So at some point summer
- 15:19Speaker 5: gives you a chance to say, Okay, here's our cap,
- 15:21Speaker 5: here's how it works, here's how it fits. You get
- 15:24Speaker 5: on the phone, hey shod right. You know this is
- 15:26Speaker 5: a big one. So there's a lot that goes into
- 15:29Speaker 5: this because if you look at the borough number, if
- 15:31Speaker 5: you look at mahomes number, it shapes your franchise, hopefully
- 15:35Speaker 5: for ten years, how that has structured, How are these
- 15:38Speaker 5: things fit, how it grows.
- 15:39Speaker 3: It's the engine that drives your salary gup.
- 15:41Speaker 5: How much you want to have in each year, so
- 15:44Speaker 5: I think, if memory serves, I think Herbert got done
- 15:48Speaker 5: late as well.
- 15:49Speaker 4: So Herbert Burrow a lot of the mega deals.
- 15:51Speaker 5: Josh Allen, I don't think any of them are on
- 15:53Speaker 5: the start of the league year because it's too much
- 15:55Speaker 5: to try to get done.
- 15:56Speaker 2: And I think that when you look at it. But
- 15:58Speaker 2: Doug said resoundingly at the combine, he's our guy. Okay, well,
- 16:03Speaker 2: you know you're going to get a deal done for him,
- 16:06Speaker 2: right You're going to extend him, So figure out what
- 16:09Speaker 2: the number is. As John said, kind of take your time,
- 16:11Speaker 2: look at your whole salary cap picture, and then.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Go ahead and make the offer.
- 16:15Speaker 2: But you've got his fourth year and his fifth year option,
- 16:20Speaker 2: so you do have the backstop. You don't need to
- 16:22Speaker 2: necessarily get it done. If you can't come to a
- 16:24Speaker 2: number that works, you can be patient with it. But
- 16:27Speaker 2: if he's your guy, you want to set your salary
- 16:29Speaker 2: cap up for twenty twenty five and beyond as soon
- 16:32Speaker 2: as you can.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Something to keep an eye on a little bit later
- 16:35Speaker 1: on in the summer as things get closer to training camp,
- 16:39Speaker 1: stay with us here as we're going to do an
- 16:40Speaker 1: ozone mail bag when we come back after the break.

- 17:14Speaker 1: One of our very favorite segments, John As we get
- 17:17Speaker 1: your readers, our viewers, listeners to write in and see
- 17:21Speaker 1: what they have questions.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Talk about. Yeah, good segment.
- 17:23Speaker 3: I enjoy yourself all right.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Our first reader viewer listener David from the Island. He
- 17:30Speaker 1: wants to know the signing. The signing for Morse and
- 17:33Speaker 1: trading for Jones negatively affect the Jags when computing compensatory
- 17:37Speaker 1: picks next year.
- 17:38Speaker 5: No, they only And I included this because there's a
- 17:43Speaker 5: lot of misunderstanding of that. I think any acquisition is
- 17:46Speaker 5: going to cost you commisitory picks.
- 17:48Speaker 4: First of all, I'd be surprised if they get.
- 17:50Speaker 5: A commensatory pick now because they have been active in
- 17:52Speaker 5: free agency. The formula is gains and losses involving unrestricted
- 17:59Speaker 5: free agents in one off season affect your compensatory picks.
- 18:04Speaker 5: The next offseason, they traded for Jones.
- 18:06Speaker 4: He's not in it. Morse was not unrestricted.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Because he was released by Buffalo. Now that's said, they've
- 18:12Speaker 5: gone after four unrestricted guys, not huge number guys, but
- 18:18Speaker 5: when you go after that many, they would have to
- 18:21Speaker 5: lose somebody dramatic like Ridley. Maybe they get one in that,
- 18:26Speaker 5: but I'd be a little surprised because they've gained a
- 18:29Speaker 5: lot in free agency when that's been the reason that
- 18:31Speaker 5: the Jaguars haven't heck pens story picks for the last
- 18:33Speaker 5: decade or so is they haven't drafted well historically.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Ye.
- 18:38Speaker 5: So they have been active in free agency, and when
- 18:40Speaker 5: you're that active in free agency, you don't get the
- 18:42Speaker 5: pen story picks because you're more active than you lose.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I can't add anything to that.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I mean, the one thing I do know is that
- 18:48Speaker 2: they have tweaked the system yearly to try to get
- 18:51Speaker 2: it right. You lose a big free agent, generally, you're
- 18:54Speaker 2: going to get a bottom of the third round pick.
- 18:56Speaker 2: You lose some middle guys, you're generally going to get
- 18:58Speaker 2: a sixth or seventh round pick.
- 19:00Speaker 1: All right, Well, we'll see how that ends, but if
- 19:03Speaker 1: you sign guys it cancels out.
- 19:06Speaker 5: That negates all that. So there is a little bit
- 19:08Speaker 5: of a misconception. A lot of my ozone weders said,
- 19:11Speaker 5: well they should just get rid of Ridley. They'll get
- 19:13Speaker 5: a third round pick. Well not if you go out
- 19:16Speaker 5: and be active, So that doesn't add up, and people
- 19:19Speaker 5: will be mad.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Next year if that happens. But that's how it.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Is, all right, let's hear our. Another fanatic fan question.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Brian from Tampa is next up, and he says, the
- 19:28Speaker 1: JAG's got more expensive on Monday, but did they get better?
- 19:31Speaker 4: Well?
- 19:32Speaker 5: And I included this one because I'm not sure they
- 19:34Speaker 5: got that much more expensive. Yes, you get expensive when
- 19:37Speaker 5: you play in free agency. But I didn't get the
- 19:39Speaker 5: idea that this was just cash at the door, you know,
- 19:44Speaker 5: throw everything at it guy.
- 19:46Speaker 4: This was a more measured approach.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:49Speaker 5: I think they got better because I think Mitch Morse
- 19:51Speaker 5: makes you better, because I think it makes you stouter
- 19:53Speaker 5: in the middle.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Did they get better everywhere? Else? Is Gabe Davis quote
- 19:57Speaker 4: better than Calvin Ridley? I don't know. Is he a
- 20:01Speaker 4: cheaper option?
- 20:03Speaker 5: They can give you something different the other guys. I
- 20:06Speaker 5: think you're assured of starters who can help you going in.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Are they that much better everywhere else?
- 20:14Speaker 4: I'm not sure. I haven't seen yet.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Mitch Morris makes you better, right, everyone else makes you
- 20:19Speaker 2: more competitive? I think that's probably the best way to
- 20:22Speaker 2: say to who can say what Darnell Savage brings. I mean,
- 20:25Speaker 2: he was a special teams player last year in Green Bay.
- 20:28Speaker 2: The Jaguars are taking a flyer on this. They're looking
- 20:31Speaker 2: at his overall talent and saying he's got what we
- 20:34Speaker 2: want to do X, Y and Z. Well, you can't say, well, okay,
- 20:37Speaker 2: you're better here or there. I like Gay Biggers. I
- 20:40Speaker 2: think he's a good football player. But is he that
- 20:43Speaker 2: explosive guy that Calvin Ridley showed us at times?
- 20:46Speaker 4: He can be?
- 20:47Speaker 3: I don't.
- 20:48Speaker 2: He's not right, but he is a guy who can
- 20:50Speaker 2: probably be more consistent. Calvin was inconsistent running routes and
- 20:53Speaker 2: created problems. That's not been the word on gave Davis
- 20:56Speaker 2: that he's a tough guy, smart guy, well prepared guy.
- 21:00Speaker 2: So does he make you better? In one sense, he's
- 21:03Speaker 2: there where the quarterback wants him to be. In another sense,
- 21:06Speaker 2: he's not the down the field guy that Calvin is.
- 21:08Speaker 5: I thought Darby was interesting that pick up too, because
- 21:11Speaker 5: clearly they didn't believe that Darius Williams fit what they're doing.
- 21:15Speaker 5: They believe that Darby does. You also bring Darby in
- 21:18Speaker 5: and he doesn't absolutely cripple you for five years. It's
- 21:22Speaker 5: a two year deal. He's going into his tenth year.
- 21:25Speaker 5: He and Morrise are Obviously, we've got to do something
- 21:29Speaker 5: at these spots because it's hard to draft, Like if
- 21:33Speaker 5: you're going into the draft this year trying to fill
- 21:35Speaker 5: those two spots, it's hard to go get two corners
- 21:39Speaker 5: and a center in the draft. So in this case,
- 21:42Speaker 5: they had to sort of go get a couple of
- 21:43Speaker 5: stop gaps. I would expect them to draft those two
- 21:46Speaker 5: positions over the next couple of years to try to
- 21:47Speaker 5: get it right.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Art Our final fan question is from Michael in Orange Park.
- 21:52Speaker 1: He said, well, at least the Jaguars did something on
- 21:55Speaker 1: the offensive line, but have they done enough? And John
- 21:58Speaker 1: you alluded to that maybe this is the little stop
- 22:00Speaker 1: gappy and then kind of address it in the draft
- 22:02Speaker 1: as well, and see what Cooper Hodge just brings.
- 22:03Speaker 5: Well, yeah, the approach with the offensive line, everybody wanted
- 22:07Speaker 5: to just oh, tear it down. But it's hard to do,
- 22:11Speaker 5: and it's easy to say, go do it. But if
- 22:15Speaker 5: you go do that, then all of a sudden, you're
- 22:17Speaker 5: bringing in mega price free agent and you're committing the
- 22:22Speaker 5: entire draft to that.
- 22:23Speaker 4: I'd be fine if they went offensive line in.
- 22:24Speaker 5: The draft philosophically, but philosophically can go out the window,
- 22:28Speaker 5: and you need corners. So their school of thought clearly
- 22:33Speaker 5: is if we're making the middle stouter, and if we
- 22:36Speaker 5: can get these guys in continuity, that'll be enough to improve.
- 22:40Speaker 4: That's the approach.
- 22:41Speaker 2: I wouldn't be scared to take an offensive lineman in
- 22:43Speaker 2: the draft because correct me if I'm wrong. Cam Robinson
- 22:46Speaker 2: is in the final year of his free agent contract
- 22:48Speaker 2: and Walker Little is in the free agent in the
- 22:50Speaker 2: final year of his rookie contract. So next year you
- 22:55Speaker 2: have one tackle under contract, Anthon Harrison, who's a really
- 22:59Speaker 2: good one. So depending on what they think of these
- 23:02Speaker 2: two guys and what their contract demands might be, if
- 23:06Speaker 2: you take an offensive tackle at seventeen in a draft
- 23:08Speaker 2: that is filled with really good offensive tackles, as many
- 23:12Speaker 2: as nine guys could go in the first round. If
- 23:15Speaker 2: you take one of those guys, fine, right, yeah, fine,
- 23:18Speaker 2: you're setting yourself up long term. The GM's job is
- 23:21Speaker 2: always to have a long term perspective on the roster,
- 23:24Speaker 2: and I think that would be a good move.
- 23:26Speaker 5: And philosophically, that is a perfectly legitimate thing to do.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Even though you've got two tackles, as you know, can
- 23:33Speaker 5: start because it's difficult. Teams do it, but it's difficult
- 23:39Speaker 5: to find tackles that you love outside about the top
- 23:43Speaker 5: forty all.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Right, something to keep an eye on. Stay with us
- 23:46Speaker 1: here on jag Zam. We're going to come back talk
- 23:48Speaker 1: a little bit about what we've got going on for
- 23:50Speaker 1: free agency, tomorrown where the team is headed with that expans.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Join us on Tuesday, April sixteenth, from six thirty to
- 24:02Speaker 1: eight thirty at EverBank Stadium for the Beat inspired by
- 24:05Speaker 1: Jags Jobs event presented by the Florida Lottery. You can
- 24:08Speaker 1: register now at Jaguars dot com. Slash right futures.
- 24:13Speaker 6: He dropped the throat looking looking fires fill in the
- 24:17Speaker 6: field and that ball is picked off. It is picked
- 24:21Speaker 6: off the race shown jackins. He's running it back along
- 24:24Speaker 6: the right sideline. That is gonna be a touchdown. That
- 24:29Speaker 6: is gonna be a touchdown. The Jags are gonna win
- 24:32Speaker 6: it on a race Seoan jacko its big six?
- 24:36Speaker 4: Are you kidding me?
- 24:41Speaker 1: A lot of changes for the Jags and a lot
- 24:42Speaker 1: of new faces we mentioned are coming to town. That
- 24:44Speaker 1: means a lot of other people are not gonna be
- 24:46Speaker 1: here this year. Rashaon Jenkins one of those cap casualties,
- 24:49Speaker 1: Darius Williams as well, and I think with some other signings,
- 24:52Speaker 1: there's some other players that probably wants you. Jamal Agnew
- 24:54Speaker 1: one of those as well. So things are changing. It's
- 24:56Speaker 1: not gonna be like last year.
- 24:57Speaker 2: As he goes out the door, it's important to remember
- 25:00Speaker 2: that Rayshawn Jenkins in twenty twenty one.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Right his first year here, he was okay.
- 25:05Speaker 2: In twenty twenty two, he gave you two of the
- 25:07Speaker 2: biggest defensive plays in franchise history, the one that we
- 25:11Speaker 2: just saw and obviously the sack strip against the Titans
- 25:15Speaker 2: that turned into a Josh Allen touchdown that was such
- 25:17Speaker 2: a dramatic end to that season. So, I mean three years,
- 25:21Speaker 2: two enormous memorialized kind of plays As a good signing.
- 25:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you play this game for the money,
- 25:31Speaker 5: but players also play it for the memories and the
- 25:33Speaker 5: moment he turned into the moments.
- 25:36Speaker 4: That fans will never forget.
- 25:38Speaker 5: I think the Rayshaw's relationship with the team will remain strong.
- 25:42Speaker 5: I expect at some point to see him back and
- 25:45Speaker 5: fans will always be able to say, hey man, I
- 25:47Speaker 5: was there, you know, and Jamal Agne the same way
- 25:51Speaker 5: in the disaster. And I think the signing of a.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Dervin A probably means gone.
- 26:00Speaker 5: I mean so, but fans who were there will never
- 26:04Speaker 5: forget one hundred and nine yard return and he changed
- 26:08Speaker 5: a lot of games.
- 26:09Speaker 4: So it's a business.
- 26:11Speaker 5: These guys eventually have to leave, but a few guys
- 26:16Speaker 5: will leave that I think mean a lot to fans.
- 26:18Speaker 5: And hopefully these guys are financially secure for the rest
- 26:22Speaker 5: of their lives.
- 26:23Speaker 4: But if they take with.
- 26:25Speaker 5: Them those kind of moments and those kind of connections,
- 26:28Speaker 5: that's pretty cool to you.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Absolutely. As for us the rest of the week, We're
- 26:32Speaker 1: going to have a special show, Free Agency Live tomorrow
- 26:34Speaker 1: at four pm and we're going to have a lot
- 26:36Speaker 1: of talk about as all of these things will become official.
- 26:39Speaker 1: So are we going to see anymore before that or
- 26:41Speaker 1: just the ones we've seen so far?
- 26:42Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you what they are keeping Tim Walsh
- 26:44Speaker 2: in a very sharp pencil, busy because they came into
- 26:46Speaker 2: this week with roughly eighteen million dollars in salary cap room,
- 26:50Speaker 2: and you start signing free agents in the numbers that
- 26:53Speaker 2: they have, and that evaporates quickly, and you still need
- 26:56Speaker 2: to have room for your draft class, right, which is
- 26:58Speaker 2: what nine picks now. I wouldn't anticipate there being anything more,
- 27:01Speaker 2: but I'd be honest with you, I didn't think they'd
- 27:03Speaker 2: have this many.
- 27:04Speaker 4: John.
- 27:04Speaker 1: What we know about Calvin by Wednesday or do you
- 27:06Speaker 1: think it might be later in the week.
- 27:07Speaker 5: I would expect. I would expect to hear something today.
- 27:11Speaker 5: It just sort of feels. But I wasn't shocked you
- 27:16Speaker 5: didn't hear something yesterday. I'd be a little more shocked.
- 27:20Speaker 4: For doing something today.
- 27:20Speaker 5: So yeah, I think by tomorrow at four pm, which
- 27:23Speaker 5: is about our show, will.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Be all right. Check out our show on Jaguars dot
- 27:25Speaker 1: com and on YouTube as well, and then we'll keep
- 27:27Speaker 1: you posted the rest of the week when all these
- 27:28Speaker 1: free agents come to Jacksonville.
