Transcript
- 0:31Hello and welcome to another episode of Anime Club where you
- 0:34just sniffing an arrow bar there?
- 0:39Yeah, yeah. I was trying to throw you off
- 0:41because you always throw me off. I'll be your host, Chris.
- 0:45And this is the other host, Phoebe the Arrow Sniffer.
- 0:49Hey all. That's a very, very bad rock
- 0:52band. Arrow sniffer, Arrow sniff.
- 0:58Living in Alveola, have you got me snacks?
- 1:02In what? Yeah, this is my snack for the
- 1:05week. I've been all right.
- 1:08Got myself an arrow. Because we're doing comfort
- 1:11animate, I thought I'd get myself a little arrow.
- 1:14Little cheeky arrow. Oh nice, I've got actually, I'll
- 1:19let you choose and for my snacks and I've got creamy coolings
- 1:23again, a different flavour and I've got various kit Kats, so
- 1:29I've got. Various Kit Kats Talk to me
- 1:32about your various Kit Kats. Opera.
- 1:34I don't know if that's fake excitement.
- 1:37No, no, I'm serious. All right.
- 1:39I just found the problem is I sound sarcastic when I'm being
- 1:43really sincere. Oh, OK.
- 1:45We've got some sort of strawberry white chocolate
- 1:48thing. Nice.
- 1:50Got something called Bad Bad the little bird on it.
- 1:56Right. Yeah, that's one of those Sanrio
- 1:58characters, isn't it? One of these which looks like
- 2:02another strawberry thing. Yeah.
- 2:05I've got another one of them which looks like a sour.
- 2:08I don't know what that is, but. Maybe like a matcha I'm.
- 2:13Going to try one of them once. Or I think that one's good
- 2:17green. I would go for the little Sanrio
- 2:21Penguin guy and the sour one. Deal easy sorted.
- 2:29Yeah. So that's me snacks.
- 2:33So as we're saying, today is a bit of a different episode
- 2:36because today we're going to be doing Phoebe's top three comfort
- 2:40animes. Give your brain a hug, but.
- 2:48Before you reveal what the what your three pixel, what do you
- 2:55think makes a comfort anime to you?
- 2:58OK. Oh, for me, I think.
- 3:00It's all personal. It's all deeply personal.
- 3:04It's very different depending on what it is.
- 3:06I do think you have to walk away feeling like your brain has just
- 3:09been like wrapped in a cosy little duvet and your heart is
- 3:13like and happy. For me, that would give me
- 3:17comfort. I also there's also something in
- 3:21there about like the visuals and the sound as well.
- 3:28Yeah. So all of the all of the animes
- 3:32I've picked, I quite like the look of taste.
- 3:34Like is it good? That looks good.
- 3:41Oh, you're real well happy with that.
- 3:43Yeah, you can't go wrong with a Kit Kat.
- 3:46I also feel that we're about like an arrow, so I'm going to
- 3:48have a bit. Yeah, because comfort anime is
- 3:54completely different everyone, so people like imagining they're
- 3:58in that landscape or whatever. It's a nice chill Loafar 1.
- 4:02So people just like being distracted from the real world,
- 4:07like me. I also I think I noticed as I
- 4:14was picking comfort animes and trying to weigh up which ones I
- 4:17would talk about. I do tend to learn more towards
- 4:21like episodic breakdowns for a comfort anime that you can like
- 4:24dip in and out of, rather than like the big epic arcs where you
- 4:32feel like you want to watch everything.
- 4:35So there's also something about the type of story being
- 4:37something that is like easy, easily digestible.
- 4:41Definitely, because if it wasn't, I'd probably be pick the
- 4:45US office because that's the thing, yeah, dip into an
- 4:48episode, it's got very loosely connected kneeler ones, and you
- 4:53just enjoy it. Then go away.
- 4:55Fly away. Yeah, and for me, or It's Always
- 5:00Sunny or Parks and Rec are the same energy.
- 5:04I watched, I'm sure I watched three or Four Seasons of It's
- 5:08Over Sunny and A11 sitting, and I think it got to the point
- 5:12where I was like, is this really happening?
- 5:15Am I really watching? This where am I?
- 5:21I've been here for days. Well, I don't want to play
- 5:26nightworms. Could I just say never in my
- 5:32life have ATV duo encapsulated you and Liam more than Danny
- 5:37DeVito and Charlie Day? Oh yeah.
- 5:43I would I would love to do spike milk.
- 5:50Yeah, I think you do do that on top Grumps.
- 5:53You do do that with your sponsors every week.
- 5:57Yeah, I think we'll be laughing at that at the minute, but I've
- 6:00just bought some props for next week, so that's fun.
- 6:05Excellent, This is like it. I love how this this week's
- 6:08Anime club has become an advert for one of my other favorite
- 6:11comfort shows, which is Top Grumps.
- 6:14It's meant to be about me stopping by you.
- 6:19No, I love it. Sorry, I did beat you well, but
- 6:26yeah, so you like just a like a blanket head.
- 6:31Wrap. That's not quite what I said.
- 6:38That's what I got from. It if your brain OK interesting.
- 6:44No, just give your brain a hug. You're just going to feel like
- 6:49you've been held and loved. See, I can't believe.
- 6:55That oh that makes me so sad. For you like if if I want a
- 7:00comfort anime I kind of want to see.
- 7:02Oh, I thought, I thought you were saying you'd never been
- 7:05held and loved. That's.
- 7:08That's for a different type. That's for me and my therapist
- 7:13to talk about. Yeah, I like, I don't know,
- 7:18people overcoming horribly, horribly miserable odds and you
- 7:23want a feeling of, yeah, God, get in.
- 7:29You want the moment that Naruto stands up self first time and or
- 7:35is that too? That's too kind.
- 7:38You want more like people surviving against all odds?
- 7:44Yeah, yeah, yeah. Kind of like I can't even think
- 7:48of an example. Is it Zabuza, the guy with the
- 7:51with the three swords and Naruto kind of like that do?
- 7:55You want to take no Zabuza the the shark guy?
- 8:00Is it the shark guy or is it do you know he had the was it an
- 8:05apprentice who looked very female but was a male in the
- 8:09woods? Yeah, yeah.
- 8:11That's, that's Zabuza. And is it what's his name begins
- 8:14with? I know exactly who you mean.
- 8:18And that is a fantastic, fantastic bit of Naruto.
- 8:20That's like peak Naruto. Yeah.
- 8:23So good. I know I kind of missed that,
- 8:25but I don't know if I'd go back to it.
- 8:27It'll be like I understand that sounds about right.
- 8:32I'm going. I'm going to say yes, OK, I'm.
- 8:36Not going to cry, I'm going to I.
- 8:39Have 0 notes What? We will leave that for people in
- 8:42the comments. Come tell us why we're wrong
- 8:44about anime. Yeah, it was.
- 8:49Sorry I got so excited I knocked my mic.
- 8:52But it is Haku I have remembered and I'm happy because I love
- 8:56though. Oh, would you do know?
- 8:59Or someday we. Should I'd love that he's It's
- 9:04good. It's good fun.
- 9:05Is it bad that instead of doing episodes I want to do an arc?
- 9:10No, I think we can do whatever we like.
- 9:11It's our podcast. True.
- 9:14What's What's going to happen? They're going to shut us down.
- 9:18They can't. We're fine.
- 9:20Going to have a word Ruby self. The the anime police are going
- 9:24to come in here, blast in. Movie's not.
- 9:34Yes, but let's do an arc. Oh yeah, let's do that.
- 9:39So I talked about this on Sunday pod.
- 9:41Oh, is that the second sour one? It's.
- 9:44Not sour, it's just crumbly and nutty.
- 9:48Oh. Not big fan of nuts.
- 9:51Oh, this is pistachio. Oh, OK, I'm quite liking that
- 10:03clipping that. So my first pick is I talked a
- 10:09bit about this on last week's Sunday Pod, and that is
- 10:14Mushishi. It's an anime that I love.
- 10:17I won't shut up about it. Every every time every time
- 10:20someone asks for animation. Usually I'm like Cowboy Bebop
- 10:23and Mushishi because I think Cowboy Bebop everyone loves.
- 10:28But Mushishi and Cowboy Bebop did nearly make it onto my list.
- 10:32But I want to do a whole episode on that rather than have it
- 10:35share the spotlight because I think it deserves that.
- 10:38OK. And but Mushishi is an anime
- 10:42that I feel like is so credibly underrated and it hits a lot of
- 10:47like really sweet spots in my comfort anime thing.
- 10:51Went to watch, went to watch a couple of episodes quickly for
- 10:54this pod. Ended up watching the all of
- 10:56series one. Yeah, Yeah, in like what?
- 11:01In like 2 days just went just went through it and had a lovely
- 11:06time doing it. It's good so so good.
- 11:10And it's an anime that's based on like various like Japanese
- 11:14folklore. And there is a mushi master
- 11:20Ginkgo, who is the one eyed mushi master who travels round
- 11:26doing mushi related problems of mushi are these creatures or
- 11:32form of life that exist beyond plants and animals and fungi.
- 11:38And when strange things happen with humans it they're almost
- 11:42like spectral or spirit based. It's because some sort of weird
- 11:48mushi has come in so that it kind of like I used to have a
- 11:51lot of like fairy. OK, that are full of like
- 11:55different, like folklore, like beautifully like illustrated
- 11:59books that would have like descriptions of like fair, like
- 12:02old, old fairy tale and like different types of fairy folk
- 12:06and stuff. And for me, Mushishi is like the
- 12:09anime fairy law anthology, but it's but using Japanese Japanese
- 12:17folklore as its source. And on top of that, it's so it's
- 12:21like it's quite gentle horror. There's like some weird stuff
- 12:24that happened. Some of it is quite unsettling.
- 12:28It never tips into being like a like an assault on senses like
- 12:33some. And the soundtracks just
- 12:37beautiful. It's really, really gorgeous.
- 12:40Because there's an episode, Because I watched.
- 12:43You've recommended me to this ages ago and I watched a few
- 12:45episodes. I don't know what, I don't know
- 12:48why I didn't finish it, but there is a girl with no eyes
- 12:53that has it. Is it a mush?
- 12:54Mushy. She mushy.
- 12:57Yes. Behind her eyes, that's eating
- 12:58her eyes. And you watched it.
- 13:01And if I, if I said, Oh yeah, there's footage of a woman, a
- 13:05little girl, having her eyes eaten from the inside.
- 13:08You think it's a bit gross, but it's not.
- 13:11It's very stylized. It's very stylized and it's also
- 13:15kind of weirdly beautiful, but it is creepy as hell.
- 13:22And and that episode starts with her just being like locked in a
- 13:26dark room and essentially not being allowed to interact with
- 13:30people at all, except except for this one little boy who brings
- 13:39her her food and sometimes play with just plays with her in the
- 13:42dark. And then he he contracts the
- 13:46same disease. And then that's when the Mushi
- 13:49master comes in and try and tries to help.
- 13:55And the other thing I love about and also a thing in that
- 13:58episode, this massive spoilers for any.
- 14:00So like skip ahead a bit if you want to actually go watch Mushi
- 14:04and I say go watch mushi. But there's a bit in that
- 14:08episode where it's. So the thing I kind of like
- 14:11about the mushi is that often they're very parasite, which
- 14:15makes them deeply creepy to me because I find parasites really
- 14:19like a terrifying thing. And but they're like the kind of
- 14:25parasites that alter your behaviour, behaviour so that
- 14:28they can thrive so often. So in that episode, the little
- 14:32girl experiences pain whenever she looks at light, But what you
- 14:36discover is that the mushi thrive in darkness.
- 14:39So they're making her feel pain so that she'll seek darkness and
- 14:44then they'll be able to like just grow exponentially.
- 14:47So there's also something about the mushi of and, and it's not,
- 14:50it's never malicious because they don't have like will.
- 14:54They're just trying to like create the right environment
- 14:57feels very natural. Well, in the same way that you
- 15:02have those parasites that infect ants, make them climb up the top
- 15:06of trees because the aim of the parasite is to be eaten by
- 15:10birds, that then the birds can carry them over long distances
- 15:13and poop them out and then they can reproduce.
- 15:16But they like change the behaviour of the Ant, often the
- 15:19mushy change the behaviour of they've infected.
- 15:23And I find that kind of like weirdly, it just feels very of
- 15:28the natural world thing that is supposed to be supernatural.
- 15:33Anime Blue Planet. Yeah, Yeah, it does actually.
- 15:38Do you know what I'd like in terms for TV?
- 15:40Like David Attenborough is right up there for me.
- 15:43And this is basically like anime David Attenborough.
- 15:47It has exactly the same. And the soundtrack is this, as
- 15:51if someone heard his voice and heard it very like calming.
- 15:58So would you like to be in the world of Busishi with that, with
- 16:03that brigade comfort if you in this world?
- 16:06I don't think it would, I think I'd probably end up dying So and
- 16:10and also the mushi masters that it's a quite a sad existence
- 16:14because they can't stay anywhere for too long because they
- 16:18attract mushi. So that's how you become a mushi
- 16:21master is often like have some sort of incident that means that
- 16:24you then are like able to see them and attract.
- 16:28So if they stay somewhere, then all their like friends and
- 16:30family get infected, hurt. So they have to move around all
- 16:34the time. So either you're a victim or
- 16:37you're live a very lonely existence.
- 16:42So I don't know if I would want to be in the world of Mushishi.
- 16:45I'm just. I do.
- 16:47Busy. The more you're talking about
- 16:49this story, you're talking about the they're not like the rules
- 16:53of nature aspect of Mushishi of a mushy and then you get the
- 16:58beautiful but sad existence of the mushy master and stuff,
- 17:02where at what point does it bring you comfort?
- 17:09I just because yeah, great question, Chris.
- 17:12I think at the point of some deep childhood trauma maybe, I
- 17:15don't know at. Least I'm.
- 17:17Not saying yeah, I think I find it beautiful.
- 17:22And also it so sometimes it's very sad because actually the
- 17:27Mushi Master save people. Sometimes he does save people
- 17:32and there's hope. But what you see a lot of in the
- 17:35from the character Mushi, she is.
- 17:38So there's this pull between like the sort of lonely wanderer
- 17:42of Ginkgo and the communities that he's helping serve by kind
- 17:47of helping individuals in them. So I think it's the some of it's
- 17:54the community stuff as. Yeah, yeah, I get that.
- 17:59But yeah, you're but yeah, you're right, it doesn't as I
- 18:02describe, it doesn't sound very comforting, but the music does
- 18:05Also a lot of heavy lifting if you get very.
- 18:10It's like a because I'm sure we've came to talk about it
- 18:14before in the past, and you were like, it's melancholy.
- 18:18That's how you would describe it.
- 18:20And I get that feeling of. Getting comfort from that.
- 18:24Yeah, yeah. There's a touch of it's all
- 18:28like, no, no. And I think when you're feeling
- 18:30sad, sometimes watching something that's incredibly
- 18:33happy is actually very irritating writing.
- 18:36Sometimes you want to be like, I'm really sorry if you can hear
- 18:39the dog licking my, licking my arm.
- 18:42It's really, really gross. Yeah, let's pop him down there,
- 18:51Eddie. Yeah.
- 18:54So sometimes when you're feeling sad, having very poppy and happy
- 18:58is a bit like it's too much. And I think Mushishi isn't.
- 19:03It's no, you're never going to feel like it's too much, I don't
- 19:06think. I think you'll always feel like
- 19:08it's kind of holding you in a very sort of slightly depressed,
- 19:14slightly depressed like but very gentle space.
- 19:19Sometimes the dark feels. Sad.
- 19:22It's the same size to feel sad and it's also like sometimes the
- 19:26darker stuff can be very comforting as well.
- 19:30But. So when's the first time you
- 19:32actually watch this? Can you remember?
- 19:36No. Oh.
- 19:37We're introduced to this. Yeah, I think I stumbled across
- 19:41it. It it.
- 19:42So this is one of the ones that no one's ever recommended me.
- 19:45And I think I just stumbled across it on YouTube and I was
- 19:50like, right, Oh, this is interesting to me.
- 19:55Yeah, because when when we were younger, it was a lot harder to
- 20:02find a new anime. Especially if it wasn't
- 20:05mainstream like a like a shot and jump or like something that
- 20:08was so weird lots of people were talking about it.
- 20:12So yeah, that's why I was asking because I'd never heard of this
- 20:15before. You recommended ages.
- 20:16Ago No yeah. And I I it's literally I think I
- 20:20was just going through like anime videos on YouTube and like
- 20:24looking for like I was having one of those days where I was
- 20:27like, I'm just maybe I just need a new series to start.
- 20:31What do I fancy? And I just stumbled across and
- 20:34they had an episode on YouTube and like 4 episodes and I was
- 20:39like OK this is my new favorite handmade.
- 20:42Was it one of them episodes that was split into like 17 parts?
- 20:46On YouTube it's like 4 minutes each.
- 20:52Yeah, yeah, probably I'm. Pretty sure that's how I'll
- 20:55watch some of bleach. Yeah, it's very.
- 20:59I mean, I actually, I tried to find a series, this anime and
- 21:03it's really hard to find now. But they do have this, the
- 21:06rebooty second series on Crunchyroll now, which is
- 21:13exciting to me because I kind of hope that by it being on
- 21:17Crunchyroll, it will get a bit more recognition.
- 21:22But yeah, well, the beautiful world of mushy shoe.
- 21:27Hello, I do kind of watch the rest.
- 21:30Want to watch the rest of it now because it did bring his like a
- 21:33oh, it's really nice. Kind of like, do you know when
- 21:36you're like a angsty teen and you stare at the bus window when
- 21:38it's raining? Kind of, kind of.
- 21:40Sad. Yeah.
- 21:41Yes, that's what I want. Where you feel, you feel like,
- 21:45oh, maybe I am beautiful in pain.
- 21:55Moving on. Just I think that was horrible
- 21:58then. Sorry, so you've got 3 picks, do
- 22:03you want to quickly move on to the second one?
- 22:06Absolutely. Let's move on to something.
- 22:09Still cringing a little. Bit yeah, you should completely
- 22:12different. Let's go for my next one is
- 22:16Gintama, which is, and this is for a very different reason,
- 22:23because this can be if you're feeling kind of a bit like low
- 22:26energy, this can be it's this is a very high energy anime.
- 22:31Yeah. And a very goofy anime, but it's
- 22:36an anime that I find incredibly addictive and very comforting in
- 22:42that the characters are just very funny.
- 22:44It's very silly situations. It's like it's kind of
- 22:48historical. It has history facts in it, but
- 22:53it's like. Roof rugby based kind of like
- 22:56the Texas Chainsaw Mosque and Ed Gein.
- 22:59Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. It's like a kind of, it's almost
- 23:03like a it's like a kind of comic, but it it reminds you
- 23:06what it reminds me of. And This is why I like it.
- 23:08It reminds me of the Beano is I feel like, yeah, could you have
- 23:17my kids about? There's a touch of like, because
- 23:21it's, again, very episodic, very silly.
- 23:26And you cut to different characters in like various
- 23:29hijigs and they'll have like, their own moments and their own
- 23:32little stories in this like very pop poppy pop party version of
- 23:40the Edo period where you've got samurai and everyone's super,
- 23:46super sassy. The 4th wall breaks in this as
- 23:50well. All the time.
- 23:53All the time, yeah. And like and like, yeah, it has
- 24:00like even the manga artist even has like the narrator just
- 24:02popping. There's like a narrator who just
- 24:04pops in and out of the series as well.
- 24:08It's very, it's very like meta and and loose in in lots of
- 24:14different ways. I think like there's like very
- 24:17little like if they ever had rules, they break them really
- 24:20quickly. And I kind of love it for and it
- 24:23never takes itself too serious. And just when you think it's
- 24:27about to take itself too seriously it you realise it's
- 24:31setting up a kind of weird joke. Yeah, because they they take
- 24:36take the mic or their parody, every single other animated man
- 24:41that they've done Dragon Ball Z, they've done One Piece and
- 24:45narrator. Everything that I've seen that
- 24:47is has been parried in, paraded in here.
- 24:50And it's bringing back memories now because I'm like, do you
- 24:54remember any of the episodes? And I remember one of them was
- 24:57called Is it in a pack of cigarettes?
- 25:01One always tastes like camel shit.
- 25:04That's just the name of one of the episodes.
- 25:07Yeah, exactly. It kind of, it kind of feels
- 25:11like someone gave a manga artist a bunch of money and they were
- 25:18like, make this popular manga into an anime and he was like,
- 25:23OK. Which is hard to bash.
- 25:26Yeah. I also think because of that
- 25:29parrot, that Paradinus is part of what makes it so funny.
- 25:32Because you watch a lot of anime, sometimes you start to
- 25:35get a bit tired of the tropes. And what you can do is you can
- 25:38go to Gintama and go, yeah, that is, that is ridiculous.
- 25:43It is ridiculous when people pull shit like.
- 25:45That they have to. They have to go to where when
- 25:50Namik like Planik to get some tobacco because of the banned
- 25:53cigarettes and the wig, they go and look for the ooey gooey
- 25:58balls which are like these slavey balls to wish back
- 26:02nicotine. And then at the end they make a
- 26:06wish and it's like, Oh no, it just turns everything ooey gooey
- 26:10and they're like. Oh yeah, yeah, it's so silly.
- 26:17Yeah. I think there's even like really
- 26:21early on in the series, there's an episode where it's literally
- 26:24most sort of Scooby-doo, where the whole episode is about like
- 26:30the police officer guy with the black hair whose name I can't
- 26:33remember right now, is just trying to chase skin.
- 26:36Yeah, just trying to like, chase, chase everyone around a
- 26:42city and like, arrest them. The whole.
- 26:44And that's the whole episode. It's just that it's just, and
- 26:48there's lots of like, missed coincidence.
- 26:50It's very fast, like missed opportunities and like people
- 26:54going in the wrong direction. And it's great, yeah, but very
- 27:00different to Mushishi in that it's like, this is like a high
- 27:03beat silly departure when you just need a bit of like,
- 27:08nonsense. Yeah, it's, it's weird because
- 27:11it's like it, it does all of these amazing, like funny
- 27:15episodes. And then I remember at one
- 27:18point, because I'm sure I watched about 3-4 hundred
- 27:20episodes or something of this. There's quite a few of them.
- 27:23It might not be that many, but watch loads and then just went
- 27:27bam, right. There's some storylines and
- 27:29really deep gem character law and everything.
- 27:32And then it was like, sorry, we're going on a break for nine
- 27:35months. I don't know when we'll be back.
- 27:37That's something like that. Yeah.
- 27:40And, and this is, and it's also one of those a series where you
- 27:44think, oh, this is just a bit of fun.
- 27:46It's super silly. And suddenly you realise you
- 27:49really care what happens characters, even when it's
- 27:51they're in ridiculous circumstances, you're actually
- 27:54really rooting for. And because of that, it also
- 27:57reminds me. So my honourable mention for
- 27:59this round was vending machine, the vending machine anime that
- 28:03we've we've actually reviewed on this podcast, and because that
- 28:07did exactly the same thing. It you really ridiculous
- 28:11character in really stupid situation and suddenly you find
- 28:15yourself really invested and you don't know how you got there
- 28:18because really the anime hasn't given you anything really
- 28:21worthwhile. But then it does and then it
- 28:25pays off. Like the fact that you care pays
- 28:27off because they do like go into this like these really deep,
- 28:30rich backgrounds and you're like, that's been there the
- 28:33whole time and we didn't know. And I love that.
- 28:36I love it for that. It's like the DND settings, you
- 28:40know when you pick up a really weak NPC then later on you're
- 28:44like I will, I will die for this NPC.
- 28:49I will die for this person that the DM is really wishing they
- 28:53had given a more normal voice. Didn't think they were going to
- 28:56be sticking around for quite so long.
- 29:02But vaguely I remember the story like that this was there was an
- 29:09aliens invaded during feudal Japan in the outlaws like
- 29:14samurai and Gintoki was one of the resistance fighters the lost
- 29:22so he gave up his sword. Does he carry around a wooden
- 29:25sword or something like that? It's not a short 1, it's not a
- 29:31sharp 1. And that feels like a sender.
- 29:34Ruino. Ruino, What's it called?
- 29:36Kenchu that we've watched 100% That's yeah, yeah.
- 29:42But that is that feels ripe for parody.
- 29:44And that is a very we know that that's like an older anime
- 29:49that's had like a fair amount of influence.
- 29:51And I'm pretty sure that Gintoki is fully ripped off from that.
- 29:57That I kind of like. Devil may care, but actually is
- 30:02a complete badass. Yeah.
- 30:06Underneath the goof, the set and it's the same.
- 30:09You have lots of characters like that as well with like Trigun,
- 30:12there's a few moments where you think, oh, this feels like a
- 30:15character who you could see in the Trigun.
- 30:19Yeah, fully. And I think that alien kind of
- 30:22Ness of it feels very try like pulled from Trigun as well.
- 30:28Whether or not it was you don't know, but it's like, I think
- 30:32it's it feels like an anime written by someone who actually
- 30:35really love other anime. Yeah.
- 30:38And therefore is doing a bit of a send up.
- 30:41I'm, I'm wondering if they've got some sort of like ADHD or
- 30:45something like that and they're just like when you do this, then
- 30:49this and this and this joke and then this.
- 30:51And I'm like, I love it, but. Yeah, it's all over the place,
- 30:55but you can, you can dip in and out of it.
- 30:58It's like, I think it's, this is one of those animes where you
- 31:01can just like pick it out, put it down when you just need like
- 31:04a little break from, you know, that really heavy episode of
- 31:09Kaiju #8IN series 2, which I'm not allowed to talk to you about
- 31:12yet. No, but I'm watching One Piece.
- 31:16No, when I finish that, I'll do. No, we're never going to be able
- 31:22to talk about Kaiju number 82. I've got so much out of it to
- 31:29watch. There is one thing I do like.
- 31:33Why stop with One Piece? Because.
- 31:36I've been, I've been least put a challenge down for us.
- 31:41I've got to do it now. Put it in the form of a
- 31:43challenge. I'll do anything.
- 31:47Yeah, I'll think of a way to finally make you watch Kaiju #8
- 31:51series 2. If I watch Dander Dan, will you
- 31:54watch Kaiju #8? Yeah, yeah, done.
- 31:58There we go. Challenge accepted.
- 32:01See I would do a watch along or something but I can't watch
- 32:05anime with other people, I don't like it.
- 32:08I don't want to hear other people's opinions while I'm
- 32:10watching this anime. Not even that.
- 32:13You know, when someone tries to talk to you while you're
- 32:15watching it And I'm like, I'm reading, listening and watching
- 32:17at the same time. Leave it alone.
- 32:19Yeah, sorry. IA 100% get that I and A lot of
- 32:24the a lot of anime I tend to watch in bed on my phone so it's
- 32:28like this is clearly a private moment leave me alone.
- 32:33Not like that. It's an accident.
- 32:35You're walking in on someone on the toilet.
- 32:38Yeah, but it feels like that level of private.
- 32:41This is my sanctum and I thought I was safe to respond however I
- 32:45needed to in order to get this out.
- 32:50I don't know what, I don't know what my face is doing right now
- 32:53and I don't want to think about it anyway.
- 33:05So this is a comfort here because of the the comedy relief
- 33:09and change of pace, would you say?
- 33:11Yeah, just the silliness of it. Yeah.
- 33:15And it's like sometimes you get a bit bored of like seeing the
- 33:17same old even if you love it. So I'm coming to this that you
- 33:23do feel like it's like it's OK take the pics out of anime as
- 33:26well as like love it deeply. Yeah, I totally get that.
- 33:35Yeah. Should we move on to your third,
- 33:37third and final pick? Oh my God yes and I I love this
- 33:42anime and. Sorry, go on.
- 33:48Go on. No, no, that's OK.
- 33:52So for me, this is an anime that I I really love and I haven't
- 33:56ever because I genuinely don't know to be your vibe, but I it's
- 34:03just, there's something about it that's so it's again, it has
- 34:07like a very human story. So there's no magic, there's no
- 34:10fighting, and it's really about a bunch of nerds living
- 34:15together, trying to protect something that they all love,
- 34:18which is their community in the shared house.
- 34:23And the anime is called Princess Jellyfish.
- 34:25And the reason I was looking because I have the manga up on a
- 34:29shelf next to my desk. Yeah, Yeah.
- 34:33And I love it. It's a beautiful anime.
- 34:37It's got it's very it's very female driven.
- 34:41So most of the characters in it are female and yet you very
- 34:45rarely see them in any sexual. They're just very human whole
- 34:50realised characters that happen to be women.
- 34:54And you also have like gender queerness in it as well.
- 34:59So we have 1 character who is transvestite is like a man
- 35:05dressed as a woman. It's not that he wants to be a
- 35:07woman, he just enjoys dressing and being beautiful.
- 35:10So there's a kind of like gender fluidness to some of the
- 35:14characters as well. There's a touch of romance, but
- 35:19it's never the be all and end all story, which I think is very
- 35:25unique for like female orientated anime as in like the
- 35:30main, the main, the the romance is a subplot.
- 35:33The main plot is about the community and about the
- 35:36friendships that the character has.
- 35:40Yeah. And I just think it's I think
- 35:42it's one of the cutest animes I think I've seen and it fills me
- 35:46with a sense of hope. And that's why I find this one
- 35:50very, very comforting. And it's also why I want to
- 35:52finish with this one. You're like laughing at me
- 35:55because you're like, you're ridiculous.
- 35:57No, no, I get it. I was surprised at the the
- 36:01romance being a secondary plot and the friendships because
- 36:04normally they'll be around. Yeah, and actually, and exactly,
- 36:09especially in especially in like anime marketed to women, the
- 36:14romances like if you look at something like Salem, which I
- 36:17also loved, get me wrong. But like the whole thing about
- 36:21Tuxedo Mark, it is apart from the fact that he's incredibly
- 36:25toxic as a character, like he is not a good he is not a good
- 36:30romance goal for any young. But like the like that kind of
- 36:37derails the whole story of her like being this strong,
- 36:40independent warrior from, you know, base and in this it's it's
- 36:49completely secondary. And actually the manga, the, the
- 36:53the woman who wrote the manga decided not to resolve the
- 36:57romantics as part of the as part of the ending.
- 37:02So it's in terms of a series they only really do like up to
- 37:06the first or second books. So it never got the the full
- 37:09story has never been fully animated because it just wasn't,
- 37:15it just didn't find an audience, I think.
- 37:17So there's also part of me. I really love this anime, but it
- 37:21all leaves me bit unsatisfied because you never get to see
- 37:25like the full story play out. But they they they do complete
- 37:29what, like one of the 1st art in the in the series that they did
- 37:34do. But yeah, so they the the the
- 37:38writer decides to resolve the main character's story, not
- 37:44romance. And I like that because it's
- 37:46like actually her, she goes on to become this like like girl
- 37:52boss and realises that it like the romance season actually that
- 37:56important that she carries on and achieves her.
- 37:59And I think that's in terms of anime we should be and manga
- 38:03that we should be giving to young women.
- 38:05This it would rate really highly for me.
- 38:07And I it's one that I wish I had found earlier in my viewing.
- 38:14Like when I found it I was like in my mid 20s and I wish I had
- 38:17like found it as a teenager, although I don't know if it
- 38:20existed then because I am a yeah.
- 38:23Again, how did you find this one?
- 38:25Because I'd never heard of this till you said, I think we're the
- 38:29first mention of it that I heard was because I think it was Pride
- 38:34month and we're looking at animes that had good
- 38:37representation that wasn't exploitative.
- 38:40And you said, Oh well, I like Princess jellyfish.
- 38:44That's quite good. And there was a banana one.
- 38:48As well. Oh, the which is which is the
- 38:52gay gangsters Banana fish? Yes, I think that was it.
- 38:56Yeah, it was actually, that is the first time I'd ever heard of
- 39:00it or it was under my radar, but I don't think I'm the topic
- 39:04demographic for. It if I'm honest, I don't think
- 39:08you are either and I don't think that you wouldn't.
- 39:13So it's not that I don't think you would not enjoy it.
- 39:16I think it's got a good story. I don't think you would fall in
- 39:20love with it and be like, this is one of the best anime ever.
- 39:24And I think that's OK because I don't think it doesn't like, not
- 39:27all anime has to be for everyone.
- 39:29Do you know what I mean? Yeah.
- 39:33I'm sure there's stuff that I like that you won't.
- 39:37Yeah, maybe. I've got a pretty low bar for
- 39:40what I like, though. I'm just like an enthusiastic
- 39:43audience. You know what?
- 39:45I mean, I'll find one. I'll find one.
- 39:48Yeah, we found ones that we both don't like.
- 39:52Yeah, yeah. Yeah, but that's not about this.
- 39:58That's on another podcast. Come for anime.
- 40:01So yeah, so. And I like this.
- 40:03I also love just the whole aesthetics of it.
- 40:08So at one point, because obviously you've got this, this
- 40:11transvestite character who does lots of, lots of dressing up and
- 40:16like maybe they're a bit more draggy.
- 40:18You don't see them often. They tend to live in the world
- 40:23in female attire, even though they're male.
- 40:27It's a really, they're a really interesting character actually.
- 40:29And, and I think, I think actually, I would say binary is
- 40:34a better term, although probably not one that was like as used as
- 40:38often when this was made. But they definitely feel like a
- 40:40non binary character, like a character that doesn't
- 40:43necessarily want to be labeled male or female and they just
- 40:45want to exist in what they like and what they feel is right.
- 40:49And I think that's really interesting.
- 40:51We don't get a lot of story, but you get that character And also
- 40:54they get to be like it's nice seeing the men in this show a
- 41:00level of emotional intelligence as well, because like I think
- 41:05sometimes the other thing that can happen in female anime is
- 41:08men are just idiots. And actually I've got a lot of
- 41:12male friends who are really like supportive and intelligent and
- 41:17like think about the world, but sometimes say they sometimes
- 41:20still do say stupid stuff, but they're able to learn from it
- 41:26and it's quite lovely. And actually the Met like that
- 41:28character brother shows up as like a secondary love interest
- 41:32point, but you see like a kind of an interesting relationship
- 41:35between them as well as as as brothers, which is really fun.
- 41:42But because it's got this kind of very fabulous drag element to
- 41:45it, you have a lot, it's like very rich pastel based, like
- 41:52colours and sets. And it makes me feel like I'm
- 41:56living in a Polly Pocket world, and I love that.
- 42:01I was getting that a lot because I haven't watched this, but I've
- 42:05watched, I think it was like a little clip or a trailer from it
- 42:11and it does look very Polly Pocket, the colors.
- 42:14It's super Polly Pocket, and I love that like, and that's one
- 42:19of the other things is that like, if for all that it has
- 42:21these like, really strong, amazing, like quite modern
- 42:24interpretations of like female characters.
- 42:27The aesthetics are so girly. And I can't.
- 42:30And sometimes I just want to like, wear pink.
- 42:35I want to wear pink and think that jellyfish are beautiful.
- 42:38When I go to an aquarium. That's OK.
- 42:43I want to go because there are. Yeah, it does.
- 42:46Like, And actually after watching this for the first
- 42:49time, I can't remember how I found it.
- 42:51It was probably another like of trawling through YouTube, find a
- 42:54strange anime, give it a go. Which I think I spent a lot of
- 43:00time doing. What?
- 43:02I get it. And getting like, kind of like a
- 43:05weird back catalog animated. And also a lot of series.
- 43:11There are a lot of series. I fell in love with my aunties
- 43:14that never went past like one series because I think I was one
- 43:19of the very few people who was like, I love this.
- 43:22And everyone else is like, yeah, but have you saw this?
- 43:26Yeah. That has like, you know,
- 43:28broader, better audience. And you're like, yeah, fair.
- 43:30That's quite good. I get why that might be more
- 43:35appealing. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:38But but yeah, for me, this is a sweet spot.
- 43:40A very, very sweet spot. Sugary sweet like a cupcake.
- 43:46Again, but I still collect. The cake like a pasta kind of
- 43:49cupcake. What I was going to say is
- 43:50aquariums are great. It definitely is this you will
- 43:54want you'll get the urge to go to an aquarium.
- 43:57You might also start looking up what does it take to own
- 43:59jellyfish? And the answer is too much.
- 44:02Yeah. There's way too much involved in
- 44:05owning jellyfish, but I went down a rabbit hole thinking
- 44:09maybe I could be a jellyfish Princess do.
- 44:15You know what's weird? I've been down a lot of rabbit
- 44:18holes and for stuff like that, like owning jellyfish, I'm sure
- 44:23I thought exactly the same thing.
- 44:25But I'm like, Nah, I'll. Stick to well, you've also
- 44:29thought if you could. You've also thought if you could
- 44:31be a jellyfish Princess. Well, I think it was right.
- 44:38I was to say, oh, I've really missed lava lamps, but they only
- 44:40make the glitter ones now. And I was to say.
- 44:44Oh, you might stare out for me then.
- 44:47Well sorry, I was like, oh I really love lava lamps but they
- 44:50don't make the lava ones anymore.
- 44:51It's all the rubbish glitter ones.
- 44:54I thought what's the next best thing?
- 44:55This. That's good to stare at.
- 44:57That requires low maintenance jellyfish.
- 45:02Turns out it's not low maintenance, it's actually quite
- 45:06high maintenance. Nothing alive is low
- 45:08maintenance. Nothing alive is low maintenance
- 45:12and we shouldn't pick up pets as hobbies.
- 45:15Oh yeah, jellyfish aren't just for Christmas.
- 45:19They're not, but they would look cute in middle Santa hats or in
- 45:27one of those snow globes that. Reminds us I've got an M making
- 45:33bully. Went and told it to grease.
- 45:34We brought back a puffer fish. Do you know you can get?
- 45:38Them Oh yeah, I did. Yeah.
- 45:41Like the, the like, yeah, we're dried.
- 45:47Yeah, the dried. Ones we always put a Santa hat
- 45:49on every Christmas. Nice, this tiny one.
- 45:54Has he got a name? Well, of course it has to be a
- 45:55tiny little hat, because he's a tiny little guy.
- 45:58Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not really.
- 46:04Does he have a name? No, not yet.
- 46:11Can I propose Santa Santa or Santos Oh.
- 46:18Yeah, because he's Greek, isn't he?
- 46:20Because he, he and Rishi, I don't know, don't know Rishi.
- 46:24Never checked. I don't know how to sex a puff
- 46:29of fish, so where'd? You find Princess John Fish
- 46:33comforting I think carefully is the answer to how to sex about
- 46:38the fish and. With a gloved hand with a.
- 46:43Gloved Hand and protection and why I love Princess jellyfish is
- 46:51it's yeah, it's just it's cute to look at.
- 46:53The aesthetics are amazing. I feel like often I'll watch
- 46:57very like pastorally. I nearly did a non anime comfort
- 47:02anime and do like a comfort animation, which is the The
- 47:05other would be being puppycat, which is on Netflix and is also
- 47:10a pastel dream when you like watch it very weird, but like
- 47:13much more surreal and goofy a bit more Adventure Time.
- 47:22Whereas Princess Jellyfist is just, it's just earnest and
- 47:25sweet and. Would you recommend it to
- 47:28people? I would recommend it to certain
- 47:32people because I don't think it is everyone's tea.
- 47:38I really don't. And I think that's OK because I
- 47:40think the people who do like it will really fall in love with
- 47:44it, and that's a beautiful thing.
- 47:48I did notice that the episodes were on YouTube as well.
- 47:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is what I mean.
- 47:54Sometimes you can troll through and get lesser known anime
- 47:57that's been cancelled and no one cares about the rights anymore.
- 48:01You can find it on YouTube. So yeah.
- 48:03So all these three pics you did tell us because I had to make
- 48:07the thumbnail before doing this. So I need to put that on.
- 48:12So I thought myself, should I watch the episodes?
- 48:16But I thought, no, it's Phoebe's episodes.
- 48:18She can. She can describe what, what
- 48:21makes it important to her. Plus I've been with her and I'm
- 48:26watching One Piece and and I will be until I'm 60 because
- 48:31there's like something crazy like 1700 hours but.
- 48:37It's at the minute it is 19 full solid days.
- 48:42Yeah, that's a lot. Yeah, that's a lot.
- 48:48Because busy, Lee said to me he was a site, right?
- 48:52Do you think you could finish and get up the current the
- 48:55current episodes? By the time We were Sonic called
- 48:59next year, I was like, I'll try. Oh.
- 49:05Yeah, fair. That seems like an easy goal.
- 49:08Yeah. And we're wanting to talk about
- 49:10it as well. Yeah.
- 49:14On Shop Gramps. No, and something different.
- 49:18I was, I was wanting like because he, he's obviously.
- 49:21A One Piece special. Yeah, because he was, he's
- 49:26watched. He's completely up to date and
- 49:28he's obsessed with One Piece. And he was just like, if there's
- 49:31anything you want to do in One Piece, I'll jump in on this.
- 49:34And I was like, well, I'll need to watch it.
- 49:36And I kind of talked to you, unless I've caught up with you.
- 49:39And that's the thing. Kind of like the Kaiju #8 fiasco
- 49:43that's going on at the minute. Yeah, you know I'm not allowed
- 49:46to talk about it because I'll spoil it for you.
- 49:48One day. One day, but yeah.
- 49:53So I'm going to watch them in increments.
- 49:57Do you know? Can you?
- 50:00I think The thing is Kaiju #8 season.
- 50:03Now look, we'll have this conversation of life.
- 50:10I kind of do that one. So what are we doing next week,
- 50:18Chris? Do you know what it is?
- 50:20I have no idea to. Would say no, I think we did.
- 50:28We could do a film. We could do, oh, do you know
- 50:33what we were talking about that we could do?
- 50:35Do you want to do a Naruto? The original series.
- 50:41The original series The first 3 episodes of the original series.
- 50:45The big one that is Naruto future her car gay.
- 50:51Yeah, good. It'll not be in the first 3
- 50:54episodes of doing things. I can't.
- 50:56I've seen all of Naruto. I've seen all of Shippuden as
- 50:59well and haven't touched Borrow because it'll make us feel
- 51:02ancient. Because I'm like this shouldn't
- 51:04be happening and. But it's like when you see child
- 51:08stars grow up and then their kids are filmed and you're like.
- 51:12Why isn't holy coke and just walking around with a beard kind
- 51:17of like that? Yeah.
- 51:20Is he in disguise, hiding from the bandits, trying to rob his
- 51:22house? I.
- 51:24Hope so mentally cope. Yeah, it's like what?
- 51:32Why? Why did a whole village.
- 51:36I hate the ex Hokage's child like so badly?
- 51:40Why did he stay by himself in the flat?
- 51:42Where's his caregiver? Why is he just have Robin?
- 51:45Why? Like, yeah, yeah.
- 51:52If you know that there's a small child but the demon inside of
- 51:55them, why do you antagonize them?
- 51:58Why? Why would you not show him love?
- 51:59And also doesn't that make doesn't the awfulness of his and
- 52:04people do show him love He has like people like Aruka who
- 52:07believe in him despite the fact that he fails every time.
- 52:12No, they do. And you have the haka gig
- 52:13watches over him and tries to tries to do his best guy sells
- 52:18Rahman. The guy who sells in running is
- 52:21it Ichikaru's Rahman? But also it kind of like I have
- 52:29moments with Naruto talk about comfort anime where I well up
- 52:34because he like you know, you were saying about like being
- 52:37people overcome odds. Every time Naruto stands up and
- 52:41does the kind thing despite the fact that he has been shown so
- 52:45little kindness, I feel myself get choked up.
- 52:52Oh. Little guy, little guy with all
- 53:00powerful demon inside of him, just like getting by on like
- 53:05sheer goodwill. It's oh, so I'm all for doing
- 53:11that. Do you want to do that Can.
- 53:13We do more than three episodes. Yeah, of course we could do as
- 53:16many as you can get through between watching One Piece I'll.
- 53:21Do One piece Naruto One piece Naruto.
- 53:24I said this story was so good in that as well.
- 53:27I'm thinking of like Rockley, he's all fiasco where he didn't
- 53:30have. A Rockley when he takes his
- 53:34takes his weights off for the first time and you realize that
- 53:37how he's so strong you cannot contain his strength.
- 53:44No Gates as well and knock himself.
- 53:47Yeah, yeah, yeah, he does. Yeah, he does.
- 53:50And also like there are so many good, the TuneIn exams in
- 53:54particular are actually some favorite, but you've also got
- 53:57like the Zabuza and Haku bit where they go out for their
- 54:01first like like June in a rank missions that just always seem
- 54:07to go sideways. Kakashi as well, his whole stuff
- 54:11like there is like, it's so good.
- 54:13It was a game changer. I'm looking forward to talking
- 54:15about this. And do you know some some of the
- 54:20the Naruto deaths with some of the first deaths, right?
- 54:23Where do you know afterwards? It's the equivalent of junior.
- 54:28I know you don't drive when you're driving home and you just
- 54:30turn the radio off and you're in silencing like I just need, I
- 54:33just need a bit of at a long time just to process all of
- 54:37this. When ASPA died I was at OH.
- 54:44And there's a moment where you realize that Kira and I, there's
- 54:47a moment where Kira and I just, And you realize what a big blow
- 54:56it is to. Yeah.
- 55:00Also, do you know who else I'd love?
- 55:01Do you? Let's save this for.
- 55:03Next week, Next week. Sorry, Yeah, yeah, we're just
- 55:05talking about good times and bad times and what's going up next
- 55:09this week on the Gyp North. Oh, so we have got on the Sunday
- 55:16pod we are doing. We're time warping again, baby,
- 55:21because it is the 50th anniversary.
- 55:25The Rocky Horror Show and of course, the suddenly pod on
- 55:28Tuesday have got a very special interview about the new
- 55:32documentary, the new documentary film on Rocky Horror with Linus
- 55:39McBride. Yeah, who was the son of the
- 55:42writer, one of the writers, one of the creators of Rocky Horror,
- 55:47which is really worth a watch. Go and have a seen it already.
- 55:51We also have on top Gramps. What's it called that you're
- 55:56doing? Bird birds, demic.
- 56:00Birds demic, That was it. Birds demic so Alfred Hitchcock
- 56:04eat your. Heart a truly, truly gonna be
- 56:10wild. Yeah.
- 56:13And then on is it Saturday we're doing we're doing countdown.
- 56:17It's not count. Is it countdown to doomsday
- 56:19Still we still counting down the booth?
- 56:21Yeah, yeah. But we're doing Captain Marvel,
- 56:24which is one of Tammy's favorite.
- 56:26I've very much been looking forward to this episode.
- 56:28And Eddie is also a big captive, which is why he's kicking off
- 56:31the background. So yeah, it's going to be a good
- 56:35week. And then, I don't know, I don't
- 56:36think we've got any wonk. But if you haven't, go and check
- 56:40out the wonk playlist because they're just fun to watch.
- 56:44You don't have to see a new episode to enjoy it.
- 56:51Sounds good. I think that's us for the week,
- 56:55yeah. See this is prerecorded, but
- 56:58next week it might be live, I don't know, maybe.
- 57:01We don't know, We'll see. Depends how much we've been hit
- 57:03in the heart by Naruto. Watch it play.
- 57:07Oh, I want to shoot Putin. I've watched them all, but let's
- 57:10talk about it. Let's do the films.
- 57:16Bye bye.
