- 0:00Speaker 1: A number of thoughts run unbridled as pen meets paper
- 0:03Speaker 1: today all about the May twelfth election. Here's a sampling.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Albert Einstein once said everything should be made as simple
- 0:10Speaker 1: as possible, but not simpler in that spirit. This race
- 0:14Speaker 1: is less about the individual candidates and more about a
- 0:17Speaker 1: referendum on Governor Patrick Morrissey's first term. Support the governor,
- 0:22Speaker 1: you vote as slate, oppose him, vote the other way,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and deny him legislative wins. Remember in the twenty four
- 0:28Speaker 1: Republican primary, morris he won with thirty three percent of
- 0:32Speaker 1: the vote, meaning sixty seven percent chose someone else. Two
- 0:37Speaker 1: years later, will they again? His core supporters likely stay loyal,
- 0:41Speaker 1: meaning he needs only a slice more in many districts,
- 0:45Speaker 1: but endorsements from figures like Shelley Moore Capitau could complicate
- 0:49Speaker 1: that math. Add low turnout in an off year election,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and these races titan further. Then there's the wild card
- 0:56Speaker 1: outside money. Will voters care? For instance, that Sugar Mabel Pass,
- 1:00Speaker 1: reportedly tied to Morrissey Allies, drew much of its funding
- 1:03Speaker 1: from out of state donors. West Virginians often dislike outsiders
- 1:07Speaker 1: telling them what to do, but will enough voters even
- 1:11Speaker 1: notice a few other tidbits. One Republican observer predicts total
- 1:15Speaker 1: spending on legislative primaries could reach ten million. That's staggering.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And then there's Jim Justice. Quiet so far, But if
- 1:25Speaker 1: he plans another run for governor, does he try to
- 1:28Speaker 1: jump in to flex some political muscle in this primary? Because,
- 1:32Speaker 1: make no mistake, the twenty twenty eight governor's race begins
- 1:35Speaker 1: one minute after polls close on May twelfth. For more insights,
