- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 106 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: So, we'll depart from our words and perhaps to a phrase today, OK.
- 0:40I Hate Talking: So, we've been discussing our new favorite American Heritage Dictionary and our old favorite, Oxford Language Dictionary.
- 0:48I Hate Talking: So, for this one, we probably won't need either.
- 0:51I Hate Talking: OK, because you know the phrase so well, or it would not be in the dictionary.
- 0:57I Hate Talking: I don't think it would be in the dictionary except for Urban Dictionary.
- 1:00I Hate Talking: Well, that's definitely not a dictionary.
- 1:03I Hate Talking: So our phrase of the episode is under the weather.
- 1:08I Hate Talking: OK.
- 1:09I Hate Talking: So I actually learned about this this past week on a presentation about boats, and it was something that I had never heard before.
- 1:17I Hate Talking: And I was actually a little bit Weary of the definition.
- 1:22I Hate Talking: And had in fact validated it myself, but the presenter was in fact correct of his source of the phrase under the weather.
- 1:31I Hate Talking: -- So -- the phrase under the weather, which is what we typically say to mean like not feeling well or sick, it comes from nautical terms.
- 1:40I Hate Talking: That's correct.
- 1:41I Hate Talking: Because of, OK, let me see if I can figure it out then, because I wasn't in that presentation.
- 1:46I Hate Talking: So is it like under the weather, like, if the weather is poor.
- 1:51I Hate Talking: Like it's gonna storm, then you guys can't sell properly.
- 1:55I Hate Talking: Would that be the idea?
- 1:58I Hate Talking: Almost.
- 2:00I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:00I Hate Talking: So the person that is under the weather or sick or not feeling well, because of said weather, so maybe they're seasick or they're already sick and the weather is exacerbating their particular symptoms, they would go below deck, and they would be under the weather beam or under the weather bow, as that section of the ship that is going to be less bumpy because of the area that it is located in.
- 2:30I Hate Talking: Oh, OK.
- 2:30I Hate Talking: So, cause yeah, if you're not feeling good, you definitely don't want to feel the swaying of the ship, cause that's gonna aggravate the symptoms.
- 2:38I Hate Talking: So you go to an area that is more stable.
- 2:42I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 2:42I Hate Talking: And then you're under the weather beam or under the weather bow, and then that was shortened to under the weather, and if you're not feeling well, you are under the weather.
- 2:51I Hate Talking: Oh, hmm, I would have never guessed that.
- 2:54I Hate Talking: And apparently this came about in the 19th century, so it's not even that old per se.
- 3:01I Hate Talking: I would expected like.
- 3:03I Hate Talking: Sailing ships of the 16th and 17th century, I was 17th, yeah, but apparently this came about in the 19th century.
- 3:11I Hate Talking: Is that when they kind of got a more stable area with the ships, like with their architecture?
- 3:19I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 3:21I Hate Talking: I'm not sure.
- 3:22I Hate Talking: I mean, they still would have been wooden ships at that time, so.
- 3:26I Hate Talking: Maybe they had a different Method of building the ship that would have a particular beam that would be the weather beam or the weather bow, and that is how it came about.
- 3:37I Hate Talking: And then during the course of history, it actually also came to be used as a term for if you are just unwell in general, or even facing financial difficulty, and you are under the weather.
- 3:53I Hate Talking: Oh, OK.
- 3:55I Hate Talking: I don't know if I've ever heard it for financial.
- 3:56I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 3:58I Hate Talking: That would have been something like after the original creation of this particular phrase, and then maybe 50 or 100 years, and then that has apparently since dropped off from the way that we use the phrase and now we really just use under the weather to mean sick or not feeling well from a physical standpoint.
- 4:18I Hate Talking: Right, because for financial, I think like underwater.
- 4:21I Hate Talking: Is that the same kind of idea then?
- 4:24I Hate Talking: Cause underwater means you're not doing well financially.
- 4:28I Hate Talking: Yeah, I suppose so.
- 4:31I Hate Talking: That would typically refer to your debt to income ratio, where you are upside down, you're underwater, you're Below 0, essentially, your debt exceeds your income in the red.
- 4:46I Hate Talking: No, in the red, you still could be doing fine from a Income to debt ratio, but perhaps for that particular period or week, expenses are exceeding income.
- 4:59I Hate Talking: So that's more on the expense revenue side versus a debt to income ratio, I think.
- 5:04I Hate Talking: OK.
- 5:05I Hate Talking: Because you can operate in the red for a while, if you have savings.
- 5:11I Hate Talking: If you're in the red from a Or credit.
- 5:16I Hate Talking: Well then you know, then you're underwater because that's a debt thing.
- 5:19I Hate Talking: Credit would be debt.
- 5:20I Hate Talking: Oh, OK.
- 5:21I Hate Talking: If you're using savings to fulfill expenses that are less than your income, then you're in the red, but you're not necessarily underwater because you're not in debt.
- 5:32I Hate Talking: You're just spending more than you're getting, but you're not below 0 because you have your own personal savings that are above 0.
- 5:41I Hate Talking: OK, I can see that.
- 5:43I Hate Talking: So, that is our phrase under the weather, and some interesting etymology and how that came about.
- 5:51I Hate Talking: As it relates to boats and nautical terms.
- 5:54I Hate Talking: Y'all, if you haven't heard of semester at sea, I gotta do it in college, and I would love for my kids or anyone to do it, uh, college students, it's where you live on a cruise ship and travel the world and study with your professors, the places that you're traveling to.
- 6:13I Hate Talking: It's amazing and one of the best experiences of my life.
- 6:16I Hate Talking: There was a day we had really poor weather on ship, and they actually canceled courses because you do your Semester, your college classes on the ship there.
- 6:28I Hate Talking: And your professors live on the ship with you, and you guys just all travel together and do your classes at sea, and then dock and explore the country, then get back and study for the next ship, or the next country.
- 6:41I Hate Talking: There is one day though, the weather was so bad that they canceled all courses, and the only reason you're allowed out of your room or your dorm would be to go get food if you needed to, and that was like very Haired down also.
- 7:01I Hate Talking: I remember going with my roommate to go get some lunch, I think it was, and the ship was so intense.
- 7:07I Hate Talking: Everyone, if you stood up, people were extremely seasick.
- 7:12I Hate Talking: We've been living on a ship for months.
- 7:14I Hate Talking: Weren't sick, we're used to the waves, but this was next level, and we were walking down the hall, it would just like throw you against the wall across the way.
- 7:25I Hate Talking: The waves were so intense, you had to like hold on to the pole as you were walking, or you just fell over.
- 7:32I Hate Talking: But that's what made me think of when you're talking about under the weather, like, even on a ship like that, we did not have a safe spot to go.
- 7:40I Hate Talking: You were just told to stay in your room on your bed and don't get up.
- 7:44I Hate Talking: Right, but I'm sure the hallway or in your cabin was a much better space than being above deck exposed to the elements.
- 7:53I Hate Talking: Yeah, you were not allowed.
- 7:54I Hate Talking: I don't know if, I guess they probably didn't lock it for safety issues.
- 7:58I Hate Talking: I remember very clearly you were not allowed to go above deck.
- 8:01I Hate Talking: The ships that were, you know, maybe like, I forget, I'd have to make up a number, but where the waves never hit on the ship, we're going above it and hitting like the open decks, the waves were that intense.
- 8:18I Hate Talking: Right.
- 8:19I Hate Talking: So, if you were a person on a 19th century ship and had to help with the rigging and steering of the ship, you would have to be above deck to do that versus a modern ship where you're basically not going to have any of those people that are necessarily above deck in order for the function of the ship.
- 8:39I Hate Talking: Right, yeah, I mean, I assume maybe some of them did, depending on what they needed to do.
- 8:45I Hate Talking: But it was very pared down, and yeah, most of them were in their cabin or in the interior.
- 8:51I Hate Talking: It was like this deck area with all these glass, and that's where they steered the ship and worked on it.
- 8:57I Hate Talking: So unless something major happened that they had to get out there and take care of on the deck.
- 9:02I Hate Talking: Everyone stayed inside, which is different, you're right, cause like, they used to have to deal with the sales, and actually steer it and stuff, where now it's more automatic, right?
- 9:12I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 9:13I Hate Talking: And then that was a relatively small cruise ship in the grand scheme of things, which that's probably also why it was a little bit more susceptible to weather and the fact that it was so impacted by waves and weather and wind and so on.
- 9:30I Hate Talking: It was, it was a great ship.
- 9:31I Hate Talking: Um, it's no longer even, I guess it's probably in existence, but semester at Sea has actually gotten a nicer, bigger ship now.
- 9:39I Hate Talking: But mine is retired or whatnot.
- 9:44I Hate Talking: But yeah, it was, it was a great size and I didn't ever feel like it was small, but once in a while we'd be docking a port and then like a normal cruise ship would come by.
- 9:53I Hate Talking: And we were maybe like 125% of the size, so it was, it looked like tiny little babies compared to them.
- 10:00I Hate Talking: Indeed, and then I think you were under the weather on that trip too, right?
- 10:04I Hate Talking: Well, so I got seasick that day.
- 10:07I Hate Talking: And then yes, another time I got under the weather and most of the ship did was because um we went to Egypt, amazing, life changing, one of the best experiences of my life.
- 10:21I Hate Talking: But we were very clearly told what to eat, what not to eat, don't drink, only drink bottled water, things like that, just cause we're not used to their culture.
- 10:33I Hate Talking: And um our body hasn't built up those kind of immunities that they have.
- 10:38I Hate Talking: Well, I don't think I.
- 10:41I Hate Talking: Ate or drank the wrong thing, but several people did, and in a cruise ship, sickness spreads so easily.
- 10:50I Hate Talking: I was, especially with a bunch of college students all together studying and all that.
- 10:55I Hate Talking: So yes, we, um, all got very, very sick.
- 11:00I Hate Talking: It was pretty miserable, and they ended up making the rule that everyone, whether you had symptoms or not, had to take this strong antibiotic medicine.
- 11:10I Hate Talking: Just basically kill everything that was going around and we also had to stay in our cabins that day too, like for a day or two.
- 11:17I Hate Talking: We weren't allowed, they brought food to our cabins for us, so we stopped spreading it around.
- 11:22I Hate Talking: So we all ended up kind of having to quarantine and that was not fun either.
- 11:28I Hate Talking: Well, at least it wasn't the -- hantavirrus -- though.
- 11:32I Hate Talking: Oh man, yes, how concerned.
- 11:36I Hate Talking: Are you?
- 11:37I Hate Talking: Because my thought process I mentioned to you even earlier tonight, is like, hey, I bet cruises are pretty cheap right now.
- 11:45I Hate Talking: Should we look into one?
- 11:46I Hate Talking: So that's my level of concern is, I think we can take advantage of this and get a cheap cruise out of it.
- 11:53I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 11:55I Hate Talking: I have not checked prices, but I feel like you don't have that same reaction.
- 11:58I Hate Talking: No, I, I don't really like cruises to begin with, so I guess I'm one of the people that would actually cause a loss of sale because I'm going to be even more inclined to stay on land in that particular scenario.
- 12:11I Hate Talking: We went with some friends on a cruise.
- 12:14I Hate Talking: It was so fun.
- 12:15I Hate Talking: In 2019.
- 12:17I Hate Talking: And we had, I had a great time with you and our friends.
- 12:21I Hate Talking: And then obviously the next year is COVID, and I remember telling them, I'm so glad we went in this cruise last year, cause I don't think I'm getting Adam on one ever again.
- 12:32I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 12:34I Hate Talking: The most memorable events in my mind were actually not even things that took place on the boat, but on the destinations.
- 12:41I Hate Talking: So I guess I'm just a landlubber.
- 12:43I Hate Talking: I guess so.
- 12:44I Hate Talking: No, the food was so good and Yeah, oh, I loved it.
- 12:51I Hate Talking: Yeah, I guess, I mean, you can look out at the ocean.
- 12:54I Hate Talking: There was, I guess, maybe at night you could have a little bit better view of the solar system and the stars and everything, but like the pool, the hot tub, those are things you can do on land.
- 13:05I Hate Talking: Good food you can get on land.
- 13:07I Hate Talking: So, right, but 24 hours a day, yeah, just go to a 24 hour buffet.
- 13:14I Hate Talking: They have those things on land.
- 13:15I Hate Talking: Yeah, I, I get what you're saying.
- 13:18I Hate Talking: I think this point is, you don't have to do anything.
- 13:22I Hate Talking: If you're on land, you have to take a taxi somewhere, or you have to drive or walk or.
- 13:29I Hate Talking: You know, deal with all that kind of stuff.
- 13:32I Hate Talking: Where this is just, you can just lay out.
- 13:36I Hate Talking: I don't know, I love the sound of the waves too, so you just get any time of day, go listen to the ocean waves.
- 13:42I Hate Talking: Yeah, it's sort of like a beachfront property at a resort, all-inclusive, don't have to go anywhere, 24 hour food, waves right there at your doorstep.
- 13:51I Hate Talking: It's different because there you have to walk out.
- 13:55I Hate Talking: And you're not on the water, you'd be on sand.
- 13:59I Hate Talking: And if there's like an outbreak of hantavirus in rats with very uh bad cleanliness that you can just leave if you have to.
- 14:10I Hate Talking: I have not heard the official results, but I mean hantavirus is pretty much exclusively spread by the feces of rodents, so.
- 14:20I Hate Talking: That is what I've seen as the hypothesis that most people think that it was some sort of rat or mouse infestation on the boat and got into perhaps the food supply or water supply or something like that.
- 14:34I Hate Talking: Because I don't think.
- 14:36I Hate Talking: Antivirus is necessarily communicable from person to person.
- 14:41I Hate Talking: I thought you had to have it from like the source rodent.
- 14:45I Hate Talking: Well, then that's better.
- 14:47I Hate Talking: Then why are people all concerned?
- 14:49I Hate Talking: Well, I guess it's like their entire food supply is Infected for that ship for that ship.
- 14:55I Hate Talking: Well, I feel like people are acting like it's the new COVID and like you gotta quarantine those people because they're gonna come back and we're all gonna get it and -- I guess -- 2020 relive, check this.
- 15:07I Hate Talking: So search that up and see, are you gonna use Duck Duck Go or Google or Yahoo or Mr.
- 15:14I Hate Talking: Jeeves.
- 15:14I Hate Talking: Jeeves or Bing, did I say that one already?
- 15:19I Hate Talking: No, no, you did not.
- 15:21I Hate Talking: There's lots of search engines.
- 15:22I Hate Talking: All I had to do is type in how does HA and then hantavirus spread came right up.
- 15:30I Hate Talking: So what did those particular search terms result in then?
- 15:35I Hate Talking: Yeah, so mostly you're right, it is by rodents.
- 15:39I Hate Talking: So the primary transmission, the rodent to human by the airborne, like inhaling it by dust or air contamination with urine droppings, saliva when it's stirred up.
- 15:54I Hate Talking: Direct contact, like touching the contaminated items, such as a nesting nest or then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
- 16:05I Hate Talking: By rodent bites.
- 16:08I Hate Talking: And ingesting it by consuming food or water contaminated by the rodents.
- 16:14I Hate Talking: So that is the most common.
- 16:16I Hate Talking: But there is a human to human transmission.
- 16:20I Hate Talking: Most are not spread that way, but the Andres virus strain found in South America is notably the exception, and it is transmitted between people.
- 16:33I Hate Talking: Within close contact.
- 16:35I Hate Talking: So do we know is this new one, the Andreas line?
- 16:40I Hate Talking: So South America you said.
- 16:44I Hate Talking: So this particular ship is.
- 16:48I Hate Talking: Coming from.
- 16:50I Hate Talking: Well, I guess it's currently anchored off Cape Verde in Africa.
- 16:55I Hate Talking: I'm trying to find, yeah, I think it was like South South America, like the very tip is what I saw.
- 17:01I Hate Talking: So they have the flag state of the Netherlands.
- 17:06I Hate Talking: Of course, that doesn't really mean anything in terms of Where they may be cruise in or out of, so.
- 17:14I Hate Talking: Apparently this puts me into a Yahoo search.
- 17:18I Hate Talking: So how about that?
- 17:19I Hate Talking: -- There -- you go.
- 17:19I Hate Talking: Oh wow, we didn't even know Yahoo existed.
- 17:22I Hate Talking: I didn't.
- 17:23I Hate Talking: It completely fails.
- 17:24I Hate Talking: It basically results in a blank page.
- 17:26I Hate Talking: So that must be why people don't use that.
- 17:30I Hate Talking: Yeah, but, um, the vessel departed from Argentina April 1st.
- 17:35I Hate Talking: Well, there you go.
- 17:36I Hate Talking: Argentina's in South America.
- 17:38I Hate Talking: Yeah, that was one of them that was notably listed when they listed the countries.
- 17:42I Hate Talking: So maybe that is why they are concerned about the human to human transmission if it's the Andres version and Maybe came from rats originally or some sort of rodents.
- 17:55I Hate Talking: So case one, the adult male developed symptoms on April 6th while on the ship.
- 18:03I Hate Talking: And they removed him.
- 18:07I Hate Talking: The body of the passenger, I don't, oh yeah, he died.
- 18:12I Hate Talking: He passed away April 11th.
- 18:14I Hate Talking: And was removed from the ship.
- 18:16I Hate Talking: On the 24th of April, case two is an adult female in close contact with case one.
- 18:23I Hate Talking: Who on the 24th went ashore of Saint Helena.
- 18:29I Hate Talking: And got sick, airlifted on the 25th.
- 18:33I Hate Talking: Uh died on the twenty-sixth.
- 18:37I Hate Talking: And so cases 1 and 2 traveled to South America, including Argentina.
- 18:43I Hate Talking: Before they boarded the ship April 1st.
- 18:46I Hate Talking: He's 3 is an adult male.
- 18:48I Hate Talking: He presents with the ship's doctor on the 24th.
- 18:53I Hate Talking: Similar symptoms as the other two.
- 18:56I Hate Talking: On the 26th, his condition worsened, and he was evacuated in South Africa on the 27th and is currently being hospitalized.
- 19:05I Hate Talking: As of right now.
- 19:08I Hate Talking: With a confirmed case as of May 2nd.
- 19:12I Hate Talking: Case 4 is an adult female with pneumonia.
- 19:16I Hate Talking: On May 2nd.
- 19:19I Hate Talking: Just general feeling unwell.
- 19:22I Hate Talking: So, all of them sound like it just has like a high fever and like gastrointestinal symptoms at fir at first, and then it quickly deteriorates.
- 19:33I Hate Talking: So yeah, case, I mean, case 2 was right with case 1, I assume that maybe they were.
- 19:40I Hate Talking: Partners or whatnot.
- 19:42I Hate Talking: It doesn't say.
- 19:43I Hate Talking: I'm speculating, but You could assume that case 2, even though it sounds like maybe they got it from case 1.
- 19:51I Hate Talking: If they were in close contact, then maybe they would have gotten it from wherever he got it from as well.
- 19:57I Hate Talking: I suppose so because if you got sick, I could have caught it from you or I'm just with you on vacation too, eating the same stuff or whatever, yes.
- 20:08I Hate Talking: Right.
- 20:10I Hate Talking: Although hantavirus is pretty bad cause it has like a 35% mortality rate, and that's primarily because of the cardiopulmonary.
- 20:19I Hate Talking: Pulmonary syndrome, which is a strange name because it's cardiopulmonary, pulmonary syndrome.
- 20:27I Hate Talking: You say pulmonary twice the lungs, right?
- 20:30I Hate Talking: So it's yeah, heart, lungs, lungs.
- 20:33I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 20:35I Hate Talking: I don't know why.
- 20:36I Hate Talking: I don't know why you would just not call it cardiopulmonary syndrome.
- 20:40I Hate Talking: Why do you call it cardiopulmonary pulmonary syndrome?
- 20:42I Hate Talking: Oh, -- double -- pulmonary, double pulmonary.
- 20:45I Hate Talking: Does that affect both your lungs then?
- 20:47I Hate Talking: -- Maybe -- I have no idea.
- 20:48I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 20:49I Hate Talking: But even worse than that is the.
- 20:51I Hate Talking: Hemorrhaic fever.
- 20:53I Hate Talking: Why would that be worse?
- 20:56I Hate Talking: Well, it's basically when your brain bleeds during a fever.
- 21:00I Hate Talking: It's like you're, yeah, you're dead.
- 21:04I Hate Talking: Yes, so antivirus is pretty bad.
- 21:07I Hate Talking: Yeah, I mean, that's sad, no matter, you know, those 3 individuals, or I guess 2 have passed, right?
- 21:15I Hate Talking: I feel like I heard 3 passed, though the article I read said only 2.
- 21:18I Hate Talking: Right?
- 21:20I Hate Talking: I'm not sure, but.
- 21:22I Hate Talking: No matter what, there are people who have passed away from this, their families are influenced for sure.
- 21:28I Hate Talking: Yeah, this article says 3 dead, 5 sickened.
- 21:30I Hate Talking: And then, I mean, it's like, I don't know if it's a scare tactic or if it's true, but you hear people saying like, oh no.
- 21:38I Hate Talking: You know, they're back on land now and now people are getting sick on land.
- 21:42I Hate Talking: So that's why I was asking you how concerned you are or how concerned we should be about this.
- 21:50I Hate Talking: I was not that concerned because I did not even know that there's a human to human transmission vector.
- 21:56I Hate Talking: I thought it was all exclusively from rodents and their filth.
- 22:00I Hate Talking: Yeah, which it seems like it is, for the most part, that there is this occasional specific strain that has human to human.
- 22:11I Hate Talking: Transmission, but hopefully they're not doing gain of function research with the.
- 22:16I Hate Talking: Andy's I think it's Andy, right?
- 22:20I Hate Talking: You said Andres.
- 22:21I Hate Talking: I said Andres.
- 22:22I Hate Talking: Yeah, this is Andy's strange.
- 22:24I Hate Talking: How do they spell it?
- 22:24I Hate Talking: A N D E S.
- 22:26I Hate Talking: Oh yeah, that's how mine spelled it too.
- 22:28I Hate Talking: I just don't know how to read.
- 22:30I Hate Talking: Andes Andre's.
- 22:33I Hate Talking: Oh, -- I did an -- R -- in -- it.
- 22:35I Hate Talking: You had an R, yeah, Andre's or Andre.
- 22:37I Hate Talking: -- This would just -- be, you're right, Andy.
- 22:39I Hate Talking: -- I added the -- R like the Andes Mountains, probably.
- 22:42I Hate Talking: -- I don't even know where that -- is.
- 22:43I Hate Talking: Well, they're in South America, right?
- 22:45I Hate Talking: Oh no, yes, that's probably why it's named that then.
- 22:49I Hate Talking: Andreas Mountains, I've heard of those.
- 22:52I Hate Talking: Is that different?
- 22:54I Hate Talking: I think the Andes Mountains are in South America.
- 23:00I Hate Talking: Yes, they are.
- 23:01I Hate Talking: It's the longest continental mountain range in the world, ranging from Argentina, Chile, and Peru.
- 23:06I Hate Talking: Yes, it's the west side of South America.
- 23:10I Hate Talking: But I just googled it because I would have put money down that there's the Andreas Mountains.
- 23:16I Hate Talking: But there's not, it's the Andes Mountains.
- 23:20I Hate Talking: I don't know why I always said it wrong.
- 23:23I Hate Talking: Yes, my duck echo search for Andres or Andre Mountains autocorrects the Andes Mountains and does not even give anything about.
- 23:33I Hate Talking: Anything that would be related to, yeah, y'all, let me know if you thought that there was Andreas Mountains also, -- or is -- it just uncovered a new Mandela effect, so you're from a different universe because I've always known the Andes Mountains.
- 23:46I Hate Talking: Yeah, that sounds so fake.
- 23:48I Hate Talking: It's like the candy, right?
- 23:52I Hate Talking: Andy's chocolates.
- 23:53I Hate Talking: I guess you never had the mints.
- 23:58I Hate Talking: I, I do.
- 23:58I Hate Talking: I love them.
- 23:59I Hate Talking: They're so yummy.
- 24:00I Hate Talking: Is it with an R when you have the bright green packaging?
- 24:04I Hate Talking: What do you see?
- 24:05I Hate Talking: A N D Y S.
- 24:09I Hate Talking: Is that not true?
- 24:10I Hate Talking: That's like the mountains, A N D E S.
- 24:13I Hate Talking: Huh, You're right, he just showed it to me and.
- 24:19I Hate Talking: No, let me say that again.
- 24:22I Hate Talking: They're a bright green mint, -- that you always started at Olive -- Garden.
- 24:27I Hate Talking: I get them all the time.
- 24:27I Hate Talking: Yes, I understand what they are.
- 24:29I Hate Talking: Um, I would not have spelled them that way.
- 24:32I Hate Talking: It's, yeah, I mean, it's the same spelling as the Andes Mountains.
- 24:36I Hate Talking: Well, yeah, because I think that's a picture of the Andes Mountains in the background on their packaging.
- 24:39I Hate Talking: Let me see that again.
- 24:41I Hate Talking: There is a mountain, yeah, even on the little individually wrapped, there's mountains.
- 24:45I Hate Talking: -- Are -- they from Argentina?
- 24:46I Hate Talking: Can we not eat those now because we're gonna get sick?
- 24:49I Hate Talking: Oh man.
- 24:51I Hate Talking: Our kids gonna be so sad.
- 24:53I Hate Talking: That's like his favorite candy.
- 24:55I Hate Talking: I think he only thinks he can get them at Christmas, cause I put them in his stocking.
- 25:00I Hate Talking: And they're not one of those candies you get like usually in the aisles of candies.
- 25:05I Hate Talking: Well, this is interesting, I guess we have a, a double etymology on this one.
- 25:08I Hate Talking: OK, so 1921, Andrew Kaleos opened a small candy store in Chicago, Illinois.
- 25:14I Hate Talking: He called it Andy's Candies in reference to himself.
- 25:17I Hate Talking: Yeah, nice soliturgy.
- 25:20I Hate Talking: His predominantly male customers did not like giving boxes of candy with another man's name to their wives and girlfriends, so he changed it to Andy's candies, A N D E S.
- 25:30I Hate Talking: Ah, well, so maybe it's not Mandela effect.
- 25:34I Hate Talking: Do I know Andy's as the original spelling?
- 25:37I Hate Talking: Am I one of the original customers?
- 25:41I Hate Talking: Probably not, but I'm gonna pretend.
- 25:45I Hate Talking: When was that?
- 25:46I Hate Talking: When was what?
- 25:48I Hate Talking: When did he create handy?
- 25:50I Hate Talking: 1921.
- 25:51I Hate Talking: Uh, I was not alive, so I guess I wasn't an original customer.
- 25:56I Hate Talking: Yeah, -- there's mountains -- on the packaging.
- 25:59I Hate Talking: I guess it's probably the Andes Mountains or it just is.
- 26:02I Hate Talking: A -- coincidence that there's -- mountains and that it's mountains.
- 26:06I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think so.
- 26:09I Hate Talking: But he was from Chicago, not from South America.
- 26:13I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 26:14I Hate Talking: Hmm.
- 26:15I Hate Talking: That is super interesting.
- 26:18I Hate Talking: Yeah, it's, I wanna know if other people have this Mandela effect, or if I'm just Out here on this island by myself, because I would have put money down on it.
- 26:29I Hate Talking: The spelling, nor did I ever realize there was a mountain on it.
- 26:34I Hate Talking: But I would buy them.
- 26:37I Hate Talking: At least once a year for Christmas.
- 26:40I Hate Talking: Apparently, they were not associated with the Andes Mountains.
- 26:45I Hate Talking: He just liked the features of a snow-capped mountain to evoke a sense of Adventure.
- 26:51I Hate Talking: OK.
- 26:53I Hate Talking: And you couldn't choose any near.
- 26:55I Hate Talking: More local.
- 26:58I Hate Talking: Well then not with his name in it.
- 27:00I Hate Talking: Oh, cause it's close enough to his name that it counts.
- 27:05I Hate Talking: Yeah, you say it the same way, Andy's candies or Andy's candies.
- 27:09I Hate Talking: OK, Really quickly.
- 27:12I Hate Talking: Since we're going off the rails on this, how would you look up something like that in 1920?
- 27:19I Hate Talking: Like right now we just googled, yep, that's what the mountain range looks like, and that's what he took.
- 27:24I Hate Talking: In 1920, you obviously don't have Google.
- 27:28I Hate Talking: How could he figure out that there was a mountain range with his name, a variation of his name.
- 27:33I Hate Talking: Well, I would imagine that he had had like an encyclopedia and was properly trained in school on like world geography, so he knew about the Andes Mountains.
- 27:44I Hate Talking: So he knows about candy and geography.
- 27:47I Hate Talking: Most people do in the 1920s, and then I suspect that there would still be photographs or at least artists renditions of the Andes Mountains that would be available in a local library at that time.
- 28:00I Hate Talking: The local library was a pretty powerful tool before the internet.
- 28:04I Hate Talking: You could go there and find a lot of information in encyclopedias, newspapers, books, even.
- 28:10I Hate Talking: I guess so.
- 28:13I Hate Talking: I just question how they got that information.
- 28:16I Hate Talking: Well, the same way you get information today is like there has to be a person that goes there and like, Or the satellite gets it now, I guess the satellite, yes, we can just all use Google Maps and have satellite images and Starlink will swarm the world because they had to have a lot of faith back then, right?
- 28:34I Hate Talking: Because there wasn't airplanes and stuff like that.
- 28:38I Hate Talking: Like now you could fly down there in a day and even come back same day, right?
- 28:42I Hate Talking: They can fly to the moon and go around it and take pictures and prove that the moon is real.
- 28:46I Hate Talking: It only takes 7 days, right?
- 28:49I Hate Talking: That's how long it took them, or 10 days, I think, 10 days.
- 28:51I Hate Talking: See, we don't even know how long it took, so we can't trust anything you hear.
- 28:54I Hate Talking: Maybe it was 7 days and the AI said it was 10 days.
- 28:57I Hate Talking: Somebody had to get on a ship.
- 28:58I Hate Talking: And then land there, like dock there, go out and sketch the mountain.
- 29:05I Hate Talking: And then get back on a ship, and then sailed back to North America.
- 29:12I Hate Talking: And then put that in a book.
- 29:14I Hate Talking: So you're saying the only people that can produce books are from North America?
- 29:19I Hate Talking: What if there was somebody that lived in the Andes Mountains and was like, I'm gonna make a book about the Andes Mountains and then distribute it to the entire world and send it to my friends in Chicago.
- 29:30I Hate Talking: They still can draw a picture, right, but how would you know what language that was?
- 29:36I Hate Talking: How would you know that that's Andres Mountains?
- 29:39I Hate Talking: Well, it's not Andre's Mountains.
- 29:41I Hate Talking: Yeah, well, I cannot not say it.
- 29:44I Hate Talking: I would have fought you on this argument.
- 29:48I Hate Talking: Like if we did not have our phones in front of us, this is a hill I would have died on, Andreas Mountains.
- 29:55I Hate Talking: Well, maybe that's what it was in the encyclopedia in 1921, and it's just the Mandela effect.
- 30:00I Hate Talking: So, while you're looking that up, just a brief reminder to all our listeners that if you did enjoy this episode, you can always like, share and subscribe, and it's always helpful, even if you just share it with one other person.
- 30:14I Hate Talking: And as of this recording, there are 2 years of recordings in the past that you can listen to and share, which we didn't even mention, but we'll mention it now and maybe we'll talk more about that next time.
- 30:27I Hate Talking: Yeah, 2 years, guys, we have been doing this for 2 years sitting across from each other, chatting on these microphones and it's been really fun.
- 30:35I Hate Talking: It's been a good journey.
- 30:36I Hate Talking: Thanks to all those who have listened in the beginning or caught up or are just listening now.
- 30:42I Hate Talking: But to vindicate myself, I googled from Google, Andreas Mountain's Mandela effect, and I mean, maybe my AI dislikes me as a friend, but it says the Andreas Mountains Mandela effect refers to the commonly misremembered or misidentified non-existent mountain range, often mixed up with the Andres Mountains.
- 31:11I Hate Talking: So you're still saying it wrong.
- 31:12I Hate Talking: Andes, oh man, Andes Mountains, A N D E S, or a specific fictional, oh, well, maybe this is it, location, San Andreas.
- 31:27I Hate Talking: Well, maybe I don't know, -- but that's a single mountain in the -- Andreas Faults, right.
- 31:33I Hate Talking: -- I grew up on Andreas -- Faults.
- 31:36I Hate Talking: Maybe that's what you're mixing.
- 31:36I Hate Talking: -- Maybe that's where -- I get confused.
- 31:38I Hate Talking: The Mandela effect, which we have discussed in the past, you can just use the search engine and look up Mandela effect.
- 31:45I Hate Talking: So at least my AI wants to validate me that I'm not the only person that thinks this.
- 31:52I Hate Talking: Well, that's true, but AI can have its own hallucinations, so who knows.
- 31:57I Hate Talking: -- But -- yeah, if you wanna hear other Mandela effects, feel free to search back and find that.
- 32:02I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 32:03I Hate Talking: Or tell me that I'm not the only crazy one here.
- 32:06I Hate Talking: Me and AI and everyone else that thinks that it's the Andreas Mountains.
- 32:12I Hate Talking: I've never heard that before.
- 32:14I Hate Talking: So, from your friends at I Hate Talking, until next time, remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
