- 0:00Speaker 1: Mark Simone.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Mr. New York.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Now three hours every weekday from 9 till noon on 710WOR. Well,
- 0:10Speaker 1: with us right now, the best columnist in America, Michael Goodwin.
- 0:13Speaker 1: You can read his column every Sunday and every Wednesday
- 0:17Speaker 1: in the New York Post. And all of his columns
- 0:19Speaker 1: are up on the New York Post website. And he's
- 0:22Speaker 1: with us now. Michael Goodwin, how you doing?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Okay, good morning, Mark.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I love this comment about Kathy Hochul, big sister to Mamdani.
- 0:31Speaker 1: What exactly is she trying to accomplish with this Mamdani
- 0:35Speaker 1: relationship she has?
- 0:36Speaker 2: The big sis. Look, it's a simple attempt to curry
- 0:43Speaker 2: favor with his voters. And he's a representative of a
- 0:49Speaker 2: whole generation of voters. That's the way she looks at it. And,
- 0:54Speaker 2: of course, she's not popular among them, except to the
- 0:59Speaker 2: extent that she does what he wants. And then he
- 1:03Speaker 2: says nice things about her and appears at her and smiles.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And I think that's what she's looking for. She's looking
- 1:11Speaker 2: for help in the election. She's obviously somewhat concerned about
- 1:18Speaker 2: Bruce Blinken's campaign. And right now, I think she's acting
- 1:23Speaker 2: like all she has to do is keep Mamdani happy,
- 1:29Speaker 2: and then everything will fall in place next month in
- 1:32Speaker 2: the November election.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, now what is she getting wrong? It's not that simple,
- 1:37Speaker 1: is it? That Mamdani crowd might just see right through her,
- 1:40Speaker 1: won't they?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Well, that's it. I mean, they don't want the half-in,
- 1:45Speaker 2: half-out Democrats. They made that clear with their insurgency attacks
- 1:51Speaker 2: against the party. And to them, Hochul is that party.
- 1:56Speaker 2: She's that party's chief executive in New York. I believe
- 2:01Speaker 2: they are right about that. That is where her instincts are.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But they have converted her at least 50% to go
- 2:08Speaker 2: with them, to be a tear tax. all the billions
- 2:15Speaker 2: of dollars that she funneled to the Mamdani operation in
- 2:20Speaker 2: the city. So she's doing whatever she can to curry favor.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And last week, she attacked Benjamin Netanyahu for criticizing Mamdani.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And I find it very interesting. She never said whether
- 2:38Speaker 2: she agrees with Mamdani that Israel is a genocide state.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But she attacked Netanyahu for attacking Mamdani over that and
- 2:49Speaker 2: other things he has said and done. So it's another
- 2:53Speaker 2: example of Hochul wanting to rescue Mamdani without going full
- 2:59Speaker 2: in on his side. I just think this kind of half-in,
- 3:04Speaker 2: half-out posture can't work. And I hope it doesn't work
- 3:09Speaker 2: because I think it's very bad for the state and
- 3:12Speaker 2: the city.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So Bruce Blakeman, we love him. He's a great candidate.
- 3:16Speaker 1: He'd be a phenomenal governor. What can he do? He's
- 3:19Speaker 1: only got like 35 days till this election. She's only
- 3:22Speaker 1: agreed to one debate. What can he do to really
- 3:25Speaker 1: go after her?
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think the debate is going to be
- 3:30Speaker 2: the deciding factor here. I think he's got to continue
- 3:35Speaker 2: to wrap up and increase his linkage of Hochul and Mamdani.
- 3:41Speaker 2: He's done some of that. But I think he's done
- 3:45Speaker 2: it primarily upstate, where Mamdani is very unpopular. And so
- 3:51Speaker 2: that should help drive out, turn out the Republican votes,
- 3:55Speaker 2: the anti-Hoko votes. But the real key to this is
- 4:00Speaker 2: in New York City. The five boroughs, I should say
- 4:04Speaker 2: the four boroughs, not including Staten Island, always provide the
- 4:10Speaker 2: Democratic margin for and have for the last 20 years.
- 4:15Speaker 2: George Pataki in 2002 was the last Republican to win
- 4:21Speaker 2: a statewide race. And so it's always because of the
- 4:25Speaker 2: margin in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx. That's where
- 4:32Speaker 2: the Democrats run up the score. So Blakeman has to
- 4:37Speaker 2: get more turnout and more votes in New York City
- 4:42Speaker 2: if he has any hope. And I think, as I
- 4:45Speaker 2: have written, Mark, a million people voted against Mamdani. If
- 4:52Speaker 2: Blakeman could get even half of those to vote for him,
- 4:58Speaker 2: then he would, I think, be in a very good
- 5:00Speaker 2: position overall.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You know, obviously the media, very slanted, very biased, they're
- 5:06Speaker 1: always pretty brilliant. painting it as the Republicans are in
- 5:10Speaker 1: real trouble, Democrats are going to coast. You think there's
- 5:13Speaker 1: like an undercurrent there that's really going to come out
- 5:15Speaker 1: and back Blakeman and other Republicans that the polls aren't measuring?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Well, I think the best sign that I've seen in
- 5:25Speaker 2: the polls for Blakeman is that he had a significant
- 5:28Speaker 2: lead in the most recent poll among independents. And again...
- 5:36Speaker 2: It bears in mind to remember that there are more
- 5:40Speaker 2: independents in New York State than there are Republicans. There
- 5:45Speaker 2: are far more Democrats. Democrats outnumber Republicans about two to one,
- 5:50Speaker 2: I believe, in the state. But there are more independents
- 5:55Speaker 2: than there are Republicans. So he needs a big chunk
- 5:59Speaker 2: of independent voters to come out for him. And he needs,
- 6:03Speaker 2: of course, Republican voters to turn out on big numbers.
- 6:07Speaker 2: If he can do that, then I think he has
- 6:09Speaker 2: a shot. But I'm not sure. It's hard to measure
- 6:13Speaker 2: each group differently, you know, in one poll. So we
- 6:18Speaker 2: haven't seen the polls. And all these polls have been done.
- 6:23Speaker 2: He's never, to my knowledge, had the lead. So I
- 6:27Speaker 2: think the last one had him at nine points behind.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I think he's got to close that gap to inspire
- 6:36Speaker 2: those potential voters for him to come out. Because if
- 6:42Speaker 2: people think the election is already over, they're not going
- 6:46Speaker 2: to vote. So he's running out of time to light
- 6:50Speaker 2: the spark.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Hey, Michael Gooden, we haven't talked to you since UN week. Netanyahu,
- 6:56Speaker 1: powerful speech by Netanyahu, by Trump. What do you think
- 6:59Speaker 1: of Was anything accomplished with all of that?
- 7:03Speaker 2: You know, I think that speaks, Mark, was, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 2: for the UN, of course, but it was primarily for
- 7:11Speaker 2: Israeli voters. You know, Netanyahu's got an election coming up
- 7:15Speaker 2: even before the American election. It's in, I think, two,
- 7:20Speaker 2: two and a half weeks, the Israeli election. I don't
- 7:24Speaker 2: believe there's early voting or anything like that. I think
- 7:28Speaker 2: it's a single day. So it would be interesting. He's
- 7:32Speaker 2: got kind of a coalition running against him, but it's
- 7:37Speaker 2: still very much in flux. And the winner, in order
- 7:42Speaker 2: to be the winner, has to get a majority of
- 7:45Speaker 2: the seats, the parliamentary seats, the Knesset seats. That's how
- 7:51Speaker 2: the prime minister becomes the prime minister, is if your
- 7:55Speaker 2: party can get a majority of the legislative seats. then
- 8:00Speaker 2: that's the way it is in all these parliamentarian systems.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And he has a very narrow majority and has, by
- 8:10Speaker 2: stitching together several parties, he'll have to do that again
- 8:14Speaker 2: to keep the job.
- 8:15Speaker 1: All right. Well, Michael Goodwin, great stuff. Love the columns.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Any idea what you're writing about tomorrow? Can you give
- 8:21Speaker 1: us a little preview?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Yes. The Post has a fascinating piece today on Mondani's social...
- 8:29Speaker 2: social media hit squad going to go after individual business
- 8:35Speaker 2: leaders in New York City. I think it's terrible. It's terrible.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I mean, it really will drive businesses out of the city.
- 8:45Speaker 2: It's unbelievable for a mayor to do something like this.
- 8:49Speaker 1: But he's also going to run a smear campaign against
- 8:50Speaker 1: the biggest, most powerful CEOs in New York. You think
- 8:53Speaker 1: he's making it? Doesn't he realize what he's going to set?
- 8:56Speaker 1: These guys could come after him with billions of dollars.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Has he really thought about it?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think he's worried about the politics of
- 9:04Speaker 2: it just yet. I think he's running to be the
- 9:09Speaker 2: champion of the far left. He's got three and a
- 9:13Speaker 2: half years to continue in the office. But I think
- 9:16Speaker 2: if he can get a few scouts this way, it'll
- 9:21Speaker 2: make him more popular among the rabid set that follows
- 9:26Speaker 2: him now. Hmm.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Oh, interesting.
- 9:28Speaker 2: All right.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I can't wait to read that column.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Again, how does Hochul react to this, right?
- 9:33Speaker 1: Yeah, interesting. Well, this is going to be a great
- 9:35Speaker 1: column tomorrow. You can read Michael Goodwin every Sunday, every
- 9:38Speaker 1: Wednesday in the New York Post. Michael Goodwin, thanks for
- 9:41Speaker 1: being with us.
