- 0:07The Brooklyn Dodgers faced the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field for a Thursday afternoon game on May 30th, 1957.
- 0:14Brooklyn was starting off the season well, entering this game with a 22-13 record and just a game behind the NL-leading Cincinnati Reds.
- 0:21The Dodgers were looking to make it back to the World Series for the third consecutive season under manager Walt Alston.
- 0:26The Pirates were managed by Bobby Bragan and had been a below 500 team for over a decade.
- 0:31They entered this game already 15 games below 500.
- 0:34This audio recording is from the Dodgers Radio broadcast featuring announcers Vince Cully, Jerry Doggett, and Al Helfer.
- 1:04Well thank you, Dorothy Collins. And hi everybody, this is Vince Cully, along with Al Helfer and Jerry Doggett here at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.
- 1:18We're about to bring you the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates in their holiday doubleheaders.
- 1:23Today's game, like all the Dodger games this year, will be brought to you by Lucky Strike, the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:31It's made by the American Tobacco Company. Tobacco is our middle name.
- 1:36And the F&M Schaefer Brewing Company of Brooklyn, brewers of Schaefer Beer, America's oldest lager beer.
- 1:43Friends, this broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, Inc., solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 1:52Any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game
- 1:57without the express written consent of the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, Inc., is prohibited.
- 2:04Well, on Memorial Day, we certainly hope things are just fine for you wherever you may be.
- 2:09Get yourself a nice cozy corner, light up a Lucky, and just spend the afternoon with us.
- 2:15If you want to kick off your shoes, well you go right to it. It's your day.
- 2:18And for you folks who might be listening and at the same time having to work today,
- 2:22well we're trying to lessen the burden and get your mind off some of the big problems and concentrate on what happens with the Dodgers and the Pirates.
- 2:29In the first game, it will be Sal Magley and Vernon Law.
- 2:33Magley is one and one with the league, one and all against Pittsburgh, and lifetime 23 and 5.
- 2:39Magley's last start on May the 10th, when he lost on a Friday night to Ruben Gomez at the Polar Grounds 2-1.
- 2:46He has pitched only once since that time, two innings in relief.
- 2:50In his only game against Pittsburgh this year, Magley was very good.
- 2:54He pitched a complete game 6-1 victory.
- 2:56And as we said, he has a 23 and 5 lifetime record against Pirates.
- 3:01For Sal Magley, this Memorial Day, he has many a memory of course in his long and illustrious career in baseball.
- 3:08And Magley can just look to exactly one year ago today, made his first start for Brooklyn,
- 3:13pitched four innings against Philadelphia with no decisions.
- 3:16So Sal Magley warming up right now for Brooklyn and for the Pirates, Vernon Law.
- 3:21Law is two and one against the league.
- 3:23If you remember, he started against Brooklyn back in April, pitched only one inning due to a pulled muscle,
- 3:28then had to give way to Bob Perky.
- 3:30And Perky went on to pitch a brilliant ball game.
- 3:33He needed some relief in the ninth inning, but Perky got the win.
- 3:36We'll see Bob Perky in the second game today.
- 3:39As far as Law is concerned against Brooklyn, in 1956 he made five unsuccessful starts against the Dodgers.
- 3:45And lost three times.
- 3:47His last win against Brooklyn is July of 1955.
- 3:51And he defeated Brooklyn 4-1 here at Pittsburgh.
- 3:54Law two and one with the league.
- 3:56No record with Brooklyn this year and lifetime five and seven.
- 4:02This will be the tenth meeting between the two clubs.
- 4:06The Dodgers have taken five out of nine.
- 4:08However, here at Forksfield in Pittsburgh, the Pirates have done very well against Brooklyn.
- 4:12They have taken three of five.
- 4:14So this will be the tenth and the eleventh meetings between the two clubs on this Memorial Day.
- 4:19Marking the halfway point in their own private duel during the year.
- 4:22Twenty-two games played, and they will have gotten eleven down by the time the sun sets tonight.
- 4:28For the Brooklyn lineup, the Dodgers having won yesterday one to nothing,
- 4:31now trail the league-leading Cincinnati Redlegs by a game and a half.
- 4:35For Brooklyn, Jim Gilliam leads off at second base.
- 4:38Gino Somoli in left field, and Duke Snyder batting third in center.
- 4:42Carl Perillo in the cleanup spot and right.
- 4:45Gil Hutt is at first base.
- 4:47Roy Campanella back of the plate.
- 4:49Peewee Reese at shortstop batting seven.
- 4:52Don Zimmer at third base, and the pitcher is Sal Magley.
- 4:56If you notice how quiet it is here at the ballpark,
- 4:59the entire crowd standing now as a prayer is being said on this Memorial Day.
- 5:04However, these ceremonies are so far away from our microphones that we cannot pick them up.
- 5:09So if you wish, on this special day you have certain people that you'd like to remember in your prayers,
- 5:14or this might be a very good time for you to just take a minute out now
- 5:18and think about them and say what you wish in your mind.
- 5:21It has been done here at the ballpark, and the crowd now settles back and waits for the color guard,
- 5:27and we might very well have the national anthem at any moment.
- 5:30Until we do have the announcement, however, we'll continue now and give you the Pittsburgh Pirate lineup.
- 5:36For the Pirates, Bill Mazurowski opens up at second base.
- 5:40Dee Fondy batting second at first, and Bob Clemente will be in right field batting third.
- 5:46Frank Thomas, who kind of wore the horns at the yesterday's ball game,
- 5:50Thomas playing first base yesterday, booted the ball and went right through his legs
- 5:54despite the fact he was down on his right knee, and that turned out to be the pivotal play
- 5:58for some only got the base hit to drive it in.
- 6:00Brooklyn went on to win one to nothing.
- 6:02Well, Frank Thomas, in the lineup in the cleanup spot, will find himself in left field,
- 6:06at least for this first game.
- 6:08Gene Baker will be at shortstop.
- 6:10Gene Preeves at first.
- 6:12Bill Burton batting seventh in center field.
- 6:15Hank Foyle's the catcher, and Vernon Law the pitcher.
- 6:18Two and one with the league, no record with Brooklyn, lifetime five and seven.
- 6:24A note came out of yesterday's ball game, which we will pass along to,
- 6:28and since we were talking about the play concerning Frank Thomas, let's go back to it.
- 6:32No score in the ball game in the eighth inning, and with two out,
- 6:36Jim Gilliam had a bouncing ball to Frank Thomas at first.
- 6:39He went down on his right knee, tried to get his glove down to the ground.
- 6:42Somehow the ball squirted through and went on out into right field for a two-base error.
- 6:46Then, Gene Osemole had a big high bouncer over the mound, and back of the bag at second.
- 6:51Bill Mazurowski went over and tried to make a stab at the ball, just missed it by an inch or two.
- 6:57It went out into center field, and the Dodgers won it one to nothing.
- 7:00When the ball game was over, Bobby Bregan held a meeting in the Pirate Clubhouse,
- 7:04locked the door, and here's what he said to the boys in substance,
- 7:07I don't mind a man making an error, especially Frank Thomas, whom I could tell right away,
- 7:12out in his mind the one thing I'm not going to do is let the ball go through my leg.
- 7:16As we said, Thomas went down on his right knee and tried to block the ball.
- 7:20Nevertheless, it did get through.
- 7:22He said, but what I do mind is when a ball player does not think.
- 7:25And then he turned to second baseman Bill Mazurowski, and he said,
- 7:29you, Bill, with a situation like that, with a potential winning run at second base and two outs,
- 7:34on a bouncing ball so close to you, had you thought earlier,
- 7:38you should not have just tried to strain and grab the ball, you should have at least dove at it and knocked it down.
- 7:44If you had knocked it down, which would have been an easier play for you,
- 7:47you might not have gotten a batter, but the run certainly could not have scored.
- 7:51And so, Bill Mazurowski, I find you $25.
- 7:55And that's what happened yesterday, a painful defeat for Ronnie Klein.
- 7:59He's now 0-7, a very pleasant and brilliant victory for Johnny Padres.
- 8:05The rifle fire in the background enables SunnerGuard right now,
- 8:10firing off into the sky on this Memorial Day.
- 8:12As we told you earlier, we're trying to turn our back to the pregame ceremonies.
- 8:17Just the opposite, we'd love to pick them up for you.
- 8:19However, our facilities here at Pittsburgh, which is a rather spacious ballpark,
- 8:23prohibits any clear pickup by our microphones, so we'll just continue
- 8:27and every now and then try and explain what's going on down at the field.
- 8:30As of this moment, the Naval Reserve Color Guard at home plays, along with six veterans,
- 8:37and we're waiting now for the announcement.
- 8:39The crowd is standing.
- 8:41There'll be a moment of silence here at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.
- 8:45Might be a good chance to say your prayer right now.
- 8:50The National Anthem.
- 9:17The National Anthem.
- 9:47The National Anthem.
- 10:01All across the nation today in every ballpark, both major and minor leagues,
- 10:05folks taking time out, and a good time it is on Memorial Day to remember those folks
- 10:10who have since departed and the great heroes who have laid down their lives
- 10:14in all of our country's wars.
- 10:16Now the Naval Reserve Color Guard starting to leave the field,
- 10:20along with the six veterans who are out there carrying the actual colors,
- 10:24and in just a few minutes we'll be getting the first of two games underway.
- 10:28As of this moment, however, there has not been a pregame meeting at home play.
- 10:32The umpires are poised on the steps in front of a pirate dugout, and now they come out,
- 10:37and Peewee Reese, of course, will leave the Dodger dugout and bring up the batting card,
- 10:41and we'll have the exchange.
- 10:43The Navy is in Pittsburgh in the first game of a double header.
- 10:46The four umpires, Frank Secori, the plate umpire.
- 10:50The round of applause in the background now as the Naval Reserve starts to march off.
- 10:54Frank Secori, the plate umpire.
- 10:56Stan Landis will be at first.
- 10:58Bill Baker will be at second, and Frank Daskoly at first.
- 11:04In the second ballgame today, Bob Perkey and Sandy Koufax,
- 11:08and that should be an interesting duel.
- 11:10Koufax with 45 strikeouts is really fun to watch, where he can rare back and fire.
- 11:15He's tied for the National League lead with Luis Arroyo.
- 11:18Arroyo is due to pitch tomorrow.
- 11:20However, he will be held, I'm sure, for any spot relief against left-hand batters today.
- 11:25As far as Koufax is concerned, he started against the pirates twice, both in 1955.
- 11:31He pitched the shutout at Brooklyn and had a no-decision ballgame here at Forbes Field.
- 11:36He has not pitched at Pittsburgh since losing in relief in September of 1955.
- 11:41And now the Pittsburgh Pirates take the field.
- 11:44The Dodgers have played only one other doubleheader this year, and it was with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 11:57Remember, they played that one at Brooklyn.
- 12:00Well, the Pirates won the first ballgame 6-3, and the Dodgers came back to win the nightcaps 7-4.
- 12:05We'll set the Pirates defensively for you.
- 12:08Out on the mound in this first game, Vernon Law, back of the play, Hank Foyles.
- 12:12At first, Dee Fonby with a badly bruised hand, but he's in there.
- 12:16At second, Bill Mazurowski, $25 lighter at the yesterday's game.
- 12:20At short, Gene Baker and the third baseman, Gene Freed.
- 12:24In the outfield, Frank Connorson left.
- 12:26Please center fielder Bill Burton and the right fielder, Bob Clemente.
- 12:33Going down to his first base coaching box, Jake Kutler, and over his third, Billy Herman.
- 12:37So we're just a minute away from the beginning of the Memorial Day doubleheader for the Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 12:43Lucky Strike, the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked, made by the American Tobacco Company.
- 12:49And remember, tobacco is our middle name.
- 12:51Well, Lucky Strike blowing smoke rings to you from Forksfield in Pittsburgh,
- 12:55saluting our honor hospital, the Veterans Hospital at Lyons, New Jersey.
- 12:59So to all you folks at the other end, wherever you may be, have a great day today.
- 13:03Hope things go just right for you.
- 13:05And now for Lucky Strike, in the play-by-play on a big day in baseball, here's Al Helper.
- 13:10Thank you very much, Ben. Hi, everybody. Big day it is.
- 13:12And Jim Gilliam steps up, batting a 2-5-6.
- 13:15Vernon Law, Big Saw Fitzberg right-hander is ready to go.
- 13:19Kicks off the first pitch and it's swung on.
- 13:21There's a fly ball hit into left center field.
- 13:23Bill Burton has gone over. He's under it now.
- 13:25And takes it for the out.
- 13:27And now the Memorial Day doubleheader here at Forksfield in Pittsburgh has begun.
- 13:32One away in the top half of the first inning in Gino Simoli, who has hit out a 400-slip.
- 13:36In the six games he has played in since his return to the Brooklyn lineup.
- 13:40Coming up to the plate.
- 13:41The left fielder, Gino Simoli.
- 13:44Gino Simoli, whose bat has really been ripping.
- 13:46Hitting a 3-36. He has five home runs and 16 runs batted in.
- 13:50Needless to say, Frank Thomas in left field goes deep for Gino Simoli,
- 13:53and the left side of the infield plays deep.
- 13:55Gene Freeh just off third base in the event Simoli might be trying to find his way off.
- 13:59Law pickers, the curve is in at the knees first strike.
- 14:02The plate umpire here this afternoon for this first game of the doubleheader is Frank Sikori.
- 14:07Landis at first, Baker at second, and Frank Descoli, the senior umpire.
- 14:10The group is down at third.
- 14:12Law delivers a change-up curve at the outside.
- 14:14Simoli's count is one ball and one strike.
- 14:17Throughout this big afternoon, right from the Lucky Strike scoreboard,
- 14:20we'll keep you advised as to starting pickers and the progress of the other ball games
- 14:23both in the national and in the American League.
- 14:28Law is ready again. Delivers the curve ball.
- 14:31It's in under the letters right off the hands.
- 14:34One ball and two strikes to count on Simoli with one out, no baserunners.
- 14:37Top of the first, the first game of today's doubleheader.
- 14:41As Vinnie told you, we have quite a day for it here in Pittsburgh.
- 14:43Temperature in the 80s, a lot of bright, brilliant sunshine.
- 14:46Curve ball is swung on and hop back to the screen foul.
- 14:49Every now and then, however, a wandering gray cloud comes across the sky
- 14:53and will obscure the sunlight for the moment,
- 14:55but I don't think you need to worry much about it.
- 14:58What little praise we do have blowing in is blowing in from center field.
- 15:03Taught home plate.
- 15:07Law is ready now. One-two, the plate, Simoli leans back, takes a high curve inside off the chin.
- 15:12Two balls and two strikes on Gino Simoli.
- 15:14He'll be followed by Duke Snyder.
- 15:16And if anyone else is needed in the top half of the first inning, Carl Purlo, the lead-up man, will be up there.
- 15:23Star kicks, throws, Simoli swings and bounds it in the hole at third and through into left field for base hit.
- 15:31So Simoli continues to hit that ball, gets the first stage hit of the afternoon, bounding single into left field.
- 15:39Coming up to the plate now with the sun beaming brilliantly is Duke Snyder.
- 15:43Duke batting at 267 as eight home runs and 17 runs batted in.
- 15:51That's quite a nice crowd at Pittsburgh. It's not a capacity crowd, but there are quite a few people here.
- 15:58Simoli leads it out first.
- 16:00Soft curve as far as Snyder and he's way out ahead of it. Strike one.
- 16:07After he moves and he awes from the crowd.
- 16:16Snyder waiting. Law checks up with Simoli at first base.
- 16:20Delivers the play, another soft curve and Snyder hits it from down the third.
- 16:23Freeds up with it, goes back to Madurovsky, second for one to throw to first.
- 16:26There's the double play.
- 16:28So we are like our first thousand lucky for our VA hospital at Lyons, New Jersey.
- 16:33Big double play. Erases everything here and they top half the first inning.
- 16:39Around the horn affair, five to four to three.
- 16:42So that's it in the first inning. Nothing crossed for Brooklyn.
- 16:45The runs, one hit, no error.
- 16:47Nobody left on. Scorky end of half an inning. The Dodgers nothing. The Pittsburgh Pirates have nothing.
- 16:56Sure, light up a lucky right now as we go to the bottom of the first inning.
- 17:00We had the same kind of a first inning today as yesterday.
- 17:03Both Gilliam yesterday and today flied up and Simoli followed with a single.
- 17:08And both yesterday and today Duke Snyder hit into a double play.
- 17:11So the first inning the same.
- 17:13Now to the bottom of the first inning, Bill Mazurovsky coming up against Sal Magley.
- 17:17It's been a long time between lucky for Sal.
- 17:19Twenty days since his last start. So let's get right back down and find out how he does.
- 17:25All ready to go to Bill Mazurovsky who is hitting a 2-0-5. He had two home runs and four runs batted in.
- 17:30Mazurovsky, right-hand hitter, stands just off the plate.
- 17:34Dirt ball to him, swung on and dribbled down the third base line.
- 17:37Zimmercharges picked up close the first and Mazurovsky is out.
- 17:41Mazurovsky one ball hitting. Gives Sal Magley his first out in the ball game.
- 17:46One away for the Pirates, last half of the first. No matter, it's Dee Fondy.
- 17:51Dee Fondy still suffering with that right hand, although it's well enough now to be back in regular lineup.
- 18:01It's the outside part of his right hand that's been giving him trouble.
- 18:06Magley curves him and gets it over for a strike.
- 18:10Dee Fondy, tall left-hand hitter batting at 3.36.
- 18:13That's his one home run as 11 runs batted in.
- 18:18Magley works to one again as a soft curve.
- 18:21Gets down and through the hole between first and second in the right field.
- 18:24Fondy is on.
- 18:27Oh, like yesterday's ball game. Again, the Pittsburgh Pirates get a man on the point out.
- 18:35Roberto Clemente coming up.
- 18:42Yesterday afternoon the Pirates had Mazurovsky ground out in the first inning.
- 18:46Then Fries got a front single, then Clemente hit into a double play.
- 18:53Magley stretches. Delivers the play.
- 18:55Clemente swings, hits a long drive deep to the left field.
- 18:58It curves foul and goes into the bleacher.
- 19:01Long outstrike for Bob Clemente batting at 2.86.
- 19:05Three home runs and 19 runs batted in.
- 19:15Dee Fondy stepping off at first base. One out, no score.
- 19:19Magley checked up at first and delivers a play curve ball in their first strike.
- 19:23Clemente started to go and then checked up and took it.
- 19:27Nothing in two is to count on the Pittsburgh right fielder.
- 19:31Following Clemente will be Frank Thomas if he's needed.
- 19:40Joe Magley scowling down from the mound, gets a sign from Campanella.
- 19:45Delivers the side armor and trying to get away from it.
- 19:48Clemente steps that ball right back to the mound.
- 19:50Magley's got it, fires to first base, that's it for Clemente.
- 19:53And Fondy moves down to second base.
- 19:56Actually Bob Clemente was trying to get away from a high inside curve ball.
- 19:59Twisted all the way around.
- 20:06That's the second half of Pittsburgh here in the last half of the first inning and the batter now will be Frank Thomas.
- 20:15Thomas batting at 3.21. Four home runs and 19 runs batted in.
- 20:23Dee Fondy, who is a great deal faster than one would believe for watching him run, leads off to second base.
- 20:30Frank Thomas, right-hand hitter, holds that bat way down by the notch, stands off the plate, mid-wind batter's ball.
- 20:35Magley comes in with a crossfire and that's low and outside.
- 20:38One ball and no strike.
- 20:46Lucky strike, very happy to be sending it to you from Orpsfield in Pittsburgh.
- 20:50Hope you have plenty of luckies on hand for this big holiday and for over the weekend.
- 20:56Curve ball, Thomas after it, it's a high pop foul off the third base side.
- 20:59There goes Zimmer over to the roll of Canvich.
- 21:01The bat ball fades into the crowd out of play.
- 21:04One ball and one strike.
- 21:12Be out driving this afternoon listening to the ball game at the same time.
- 21:16Hope that your gloves compartment contains a carton of Lucky Strike.
- 21:21Number one and number two, that you'll take it real easy.
- 21:25Obey all the traffic rules.
- 21:27Come home safely.
- 21:29Sidearm curve ball, under the letter is good.
- 21:32Strike two, one ball, two strikes on Frank Thomas.
- 21:35Two down, one on, D. Fondy at second base.
- 21:37There is no score.
- 21:38We're in the last half of the first inning.
- 21:40The Pirates at bat for Thomas up there.
- 21:45Magley taking time.
- 21:46Hides that ball behind his right knee as he leans forward to take his time.
- 21:50Checks back over the right shoulder looking at Fondy at second and delivers the plate.
- 21:53Curve ball swung on, loops out over first base.
- 21:55If that's fair, double except foul.
- 22:01Looping fly ball, foul by a couple of feet out back of first base when no one could get to it.
- 22:06Fondy all the way around third, digging for the plate as the Ritchie Ritchie steps.
- 22:10Move back second.
- 22:13Thomas lunging on that one, broke his bat.
- 22:17Oh, he's back to the Pittsburgh bat rack to get another one.
- 22:21Bobby Bregan running his ball club from the coaches box third.
- 22:27He's got his hands together, wants Frank to get a hold of one.
- 22:31Danny Murtagh yelling words of encouragement down from his first base coaches box.
- 22:36Thomas with a new war club standing in to count on him as one ball and two strikes.
- 22:40Two down, Fondy at second.
- 22:42Magley ready, delivers the plate, sidearm fixed at low and outside.
- 22:46Two balls and two strikes.
- 22:50Sonny of baseball this afternoon all over the major leagues.
- 22:58Bagglet blows on the fingers of his pitching hand, sort of a nervous gesture.
- 23:02Now he's ready.
- 23:03Two to pick side armor.
- 23:04The curve is just high, ball three.
- 23:07Three balls and two strikes.
- 23:11Frank Secore working to plate here as the umpire and chief in the first game.
- 23:16Looking right over the left shoulder of Roy Campanella.
- 23:19Back in the sunlight, direction off the sun.
- 23:23Now gets down to pump the sign.
- 23:25Magley with a look back at Fondy, taking a short lead at second.
- 23:30Now he stretches set.
- 23:32The plate to pitch in there and swung on.
- 23:34There's a high pop-up and foul ground off to the left of the plate.
- 23:37Roy Campanella sort of toe-dancing around under it and he's got it.
- 23:41So that's all in the last half of the first inning.
- 23:43Thomas, one of the big seed guns, fouls up and out to Roy Campanella.
- 23:47For the Pirates, no runs. They had one base hit.
- 23:49They left a runner and there were no person errors.
- 23:51The score at the end of one inning of play.
- 23:53It's the Dodgers nothing, the Pirates nothing.
- 23:58The big thing all of us have been waiting for is help from Duke Schneider's best.
- 24:02Duke has never been a good spring hitter.
- 24:04I can think of only one season which Duke got off to a good start in the spring.
- 24:08However, in the last couple of games, the big guy has come alive.
- 24:12In Philadelphia on Monday night, he had one of the longest home runs of his career.
- 24:16And on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, Duke got three hits.
- 24:19Yesterday, Duke didn't get any hits, but he did hit the ball well that went for us.
- 24:24Luckily for us, we have been going pretty good without the Dukes hitting.
- 24:27Thanks to Carl Perillo and Gil Hodges.
- 24:30Now with Schneider hitting again, I think we're about ready to make our move.
- 24:34Well spoken, Captain Reese.
- 24:36Say, friends, I have a suggestion for you before we focus back on the ball game.
- 24:40Friends, light up a lucky and enjoy the genuine pleasure of a genuine cigarette.
- 24:45You'll say a lucky is the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 24:50No score on the ball game at the end of one inning.
- 24:52Carl Perillo is coming up to start inning number two against Vernon Law.
- 24:56So let's get right back to Al.
- 24:58Carl Perillo is still holding down the cleanup spot for the Brooklyn Dodgers,
- 25:01hitting in the number four slot.
- 25:03He's batting at 329, has five home runs and 33 runs batted in.
- 25:08At age for the moment, Carl has lost the leadership in the RBI department of the Major Leagues,
- 25:12and rest assured that Carl will be back there battling for it.
- 25:15Vernon Law delivers to him and Carl's after.
- 25:17Hits a bounding ball to second base.
- 25:18Mazarski charges up with a post to first base and Diamond Perillo is up.
- 25:23So Carl, if their first ball hitting, comes the first out to second inning.
- 25:29The Dodgers send up Gil Hodges now, a big right-hand hitting first baseman,
- 25:33who has filtered them safely now in 12 consecutive ball games.
- 25:37Gil's batting average still hanging around at 340.
- 25:40He's hitting at 338, has five home runs and 20 runs batted in.
- 25:46Hags for it, down above the sign to right-hander Vernon Law.
- 25:50Hodges gets his spikes ground in.
- 25:54Law can do a little overhand curve ball, and that's a sweeper that's outside and low for ball one.
- 26:08Law sets, delivers one and all.
- 26:10Soft curve floats in and over into the letters.
- 26:12Count is one ball and one strike.
- 26:17We have verification on just one ball game after the American League.
- 26:22The Yankees at Washington, ball game has already started.
- 26:24The Yankees fail to score on the top of the first.
- 26:26LC cuts to the Yankees and it's first foul for Washington.
- 26:30Thank you, Allen.
- 26:31Fix is hung on by Gil Hodges and hammered down into the ground foul.
- 26:35He's a second strike.
- 26:38One ball and two strikes.
- 26:44News comes in now that Washington did not score in the last half of the first inning,
- 26:49so that first game between the Yankees and Washington, 0-0.
- 26:55LC cut, and Commedial puts foul to opposing pitches.
- 27:01Now Hodges, after having stepped away from the plate to get himself squared away, moves back in.
- 27:07One out for the Dodgers, top of the second, there's no score.
- 27:10Just getting underway nicely here in the first game off today's double header,
- 27:14Forbes, Field, and Fitzburg.
- 27:16Lucky strike, very happy to be profaned to you from Steel City.
- 27:20Overhand fastball, ripped down to the right side, Montrasky along the rim of the grass,
- 27:24reaches down, picks up, blows to first.
- 27:26That's not good.
- 27:32Two down as Montrasky has been a busy guy here in the top of the second inning.
- 27:40Moving up to the plate now, Roy Campanella.
- 27:44Can't be fighting a 2-42, has six home runs and 21 runs slatted in.
- 27:50Right hand hitter, up the bend a little bit at the knees.
- 27:54Waits for Vernon Law, the tall right-hander, to cut the first pitch loose.
- 28:01Humps one time, kicks and throws, an overhand curve, and Camp is striding in, takes it high for ball one.
- 28:11One ball and no strikes.
- 28:14Law comes right back to him and Campanella takes that sweeping curve ball,
- 28:17and it's at the knees on the outside corner for strike one.
- 28:20One ball and one strike, two down, no baserunners, top of the second.
- 28:23The Dodgers at back, Campy up there, there is no score.
- 28:27Law pitches him a fastball and Campanella feels it foul off to the right of the plate.
- 28:30That'll go to the crowd out of play.
- 28:36One ball, two strikes.
- 28:42Campy stand right in batter's box, weaving that chaleli back and forth.
- 28:46Law throws the fastball and fires it right through for a double strike three.
- 28:52So that winds it up for Brooklyn here in the top of the second inning.
- 28:55Campanella, it's all out on strikes.
- 28:57That'll be the first strike out for Law and his twelfth this year.
- 29:01Oh, nothing across for Brooklyn in the second inning.
- 29:04So at the end of an inning and a half, it is the Dodgers nothing, the Pittsburgh Pirates nothing.
- 29:08But you've got something, Ben, what is it?
- 29:10Well, we have the correct time here in Pittsburgh, 1.25, or as we say in New York, 25 minutes after one.
- 29:17There, that means it's light up time, time to enjoy the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 29:22Lucky strikes.
- 29:24Yes sir, every time you light up a Lucky, you can expect just that, better taste.
- 29:28And the reasons? Well, they're easy.
- 29:30A Lucky's all cigarettes, all fine tobacco.
- 29:34Naturally mild tobacco that's good tasting to begin with.
- 29:37And then it's toasted to taste even better.
- 29:40Cleaner, fresher, smoother.
- 29:43No doubt about it, that's why you'll say a Lucky's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 29:53Get a station break in right now, we'll pause the station identification.
- 29:57This is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 30:01Dial 1460WOKO for the Brooklyn Dodger games.
- 30:05And write to WOKO for the complete Dodger schedule of games at home and away.
- 30:08Yours free for the asking.
- 30:10And if you have your name and address, write Baseball WOKO Albany, New York.
- 30:14126WOKO time.
- 30:17Alright, station break has been disposed of so we can continue now.
- 30:21Last of the second inning, no score on the ball game.
- 30:23Sal Magley and Ernie Law.
- 30:25Dean Baker coming up and here's Al.
- 30:27Baker's hitting number five in the Pittsburgh order this afternoon at short start.
- 30:31Starting at 268.
- 30:33He has two home runs from 16 runs batted in.
- 30:36He's a choke hitter, backs him a very severe crotch,
- 30:38a big wide spread apart and has his chin right down over the rubber of home play.
- 30:42Magley's fastball is cracked through there and Baker takes it for a strike.
- 30:47He's in a very small strike zone here, Ernie.
- 30:53Boy, he leans over.
- 30:57Magley ready to go.
- 30:58Delivers a soft curve.
- 30:59It sits right down on one half at third base and it's hollow.
- 31:03Baker, not believing the call by Daskoly down at third base.
- 31:13Charges right down to first.
- 31:15Made he turn.
- 31:17Shots in the second.
- 31:20Like the fact that first base on fire, Landon tried to stop him.
- 31:25Finally, Baker, Bill Baker, second base on fire.
- 31:29With the halftrees forward, charged down at second.
- 31:33Baker comes all the way back.
- 31:35Counted his no balls with two strikes.
- 31:46Now the crowd settling back.
- 31:47They thought Baker had drilled one just outside third.
- 31:52Could have been foul-boarded quarter-cell.
- 31:55Magley's ready, comes down, oh, two with a curveball that drives Baker back.
- 32:00One ball and two strikes.
- 32:08Baker will be followed by Freeze, who is on deck right now.
- 32:12Curveball, hit down on two halfs for Reese.
- 32:15He's up with it, throws to first and Baker is out.
- 32:19Went away for the Pirates in the last half of the second inning.
- 32:23Here will be King Freeze hitting number six in the pirate order.
- 32:28The percentage stands at 235.
- 32:30He has one home run and seven runs batted in.
- 32:36His right-hand hitter plants his right foot first and then gets the rest of his body set in just about a straightaway stand.
- 32:44Works up on the handle of the wood a couple of inches.
- 32:48Magley's curve finds its way in off the fifth, good on the inside corner for strike one.
- 32:53Don Zimmer expecting Freeze may try to punt, as he did yesterday, going up shallow at third.
- 33:03Magley's set.
- 33:07Getting right to fetch, Freeze after.
- 33:09It's a hot fly ball to left field, Geno Somoli gliding around under that there and holds it down.
- 33:14Part number two, second inning.
- 33:18Tractor still empty and Bill Burton, who has been dropped down to hit in the number seven slot.
- 33:23Moving on, left-hand hitting center fielder.
- 33:28Burton batting a 204.
- 33:29He's really having a time of it.
- 33:33Last year, batting percentage rose quite high.
- 33:37This year he's been having trouble getting the bait hit.
- 33:41Magley comes into him with a soft curve and Burton promptly hits it on a couple of hops for second.
- 33:45Gilliam charges, picks up, snaps his throw to first.
- 33:47Burton is out and throws a pirate.
- 33:50All very quickly, buckhoes go.
- 33:53Nothing across, caught at the end of two.
- 33:55Hits the Dodgers nothing, but Pittsburgh Pirates have nothing.
- 33:59Finney?
- 34:00Well friends, here it is Memorial Day and of course that means in less than a month there will be thousands of youngsters heading into their summer vacation.
- 34:07Many of them will be going to summer camp.
- 34:10How about that youngster of yours, mom and dad, huh?
- 34:12Does he like a camp where sports are highlighted?
- 34:15Where expert coaching and the sport of his choice helps him get his letter next year?
- 34:20Does he like to swim or fish, golf, play basketball, tennis, baseball, football or maybe even run crack events?
- 34:27Well, if he enjoyed sports and you want him to be part of a well-disciplined, well-planned competitive program,
- 34:33well friends, honestly, you just couldn't find a better camp than Dodger Town at Bureau Beach, Florida
- 34:38full facilities of the Dodgers wonderful training base with all the extra relaxation to put at his command.
- 34:44Drop a line to the Dodgers, 215 Montague Street in Brooklyn and ask them all about Dodger Town.
- 34:49You know there are only a few spots left on the enrollment ledgers, so be sure you send your letter right away.
- 34:55Dodger Town, camp for boys, Bureau Beach SLA.
- 34:59Wouldn't mind kind of walking along that Bureau Beach sand right now, just looking out at the ocean like the most big white cat's break.
- 35:07Let that wet sand go to ooze through your toes.
- 35:10And then watch the sunset later on.
- 35:12Uh huh.
- 35:13I'll go quietly.
- 35:14Come on, let's go.
- 35:15Alright.
- 35:17Stepping up to the plate now in the top half of third inning, D.W. Reese is the last third of the Brooklyn batting order.
- 35:22Brennan Law comes in with the first pitch.
- 35:24The Reese has slammed down the shortstop on two big hops.
- 35:27Gene Becker's got it, fires the first base.
- 35:29Blondie and that's all for Reese.
- 35:33One up, one down.
- 35:34This ball game, especially the double header here this afternoon, seems to be sort of following the script of yesterday's ball game, which was so finely pitched between Klein and Pundress.
- 35:45Don Zimmer coming up for his first whack out this afternoon.
- 35:49With one out, nobody on in the third inning.
- 35:51Each side has just one base hit, neither team has been able to score.
- 35:56Actually there hasn't been a run of the third.
- 35:58The curve ball is good. Zimmer for strike one.
- 36:04Fires from the first inning, has defunded, moved down to second base.
- 36:07That's as far as anybody's been able to get.
- 36:09Top curve, swung on by Zimmer and Mist.
- 36:11He takes the low one.
- 36:12Strike two.
- 36:16No balls, two strikes.
- 36:25Fires fast ball and Zimmer promptly hits it through the hole.
- 36:29Going first and second in the right field for a single.
- 36:34That's second hit for the Dodgers.
- 36:39Now with Zimmer at first base and one out, the batter is Sal Magley.
- 36:42We're waiting for Sal to come out of the Dodger Dugout.
- 36:47Magley has a batman this year that's had just one base hit in eight tries.
- 36:52He's had no runs batted in.
- 36:54Batting at 125.
- 36:59Had quite a kick out of Magley.
- 37:00He doesn't swing it.
- 37:01Well that batty sort of chops or tomahawk to the pitch.
- 37:06I asked him about that one time.
- 37:07He said just saw it falls behind the infield.
- 37:09He said that one's in pretty good shape.
- 37:12He bumps this pitch however and defunding.
- 37:14Makes a sliding stop as he comes in.
- 37:17Picks up and throws back to his second base for Masurowski.
- 37:19Covering, the sacrifice works.
- 37:21Zimmer goes down to second base.
- 37:26Bondi has to strike himself and slide along the grass to stop up.
- 37:35Second out in the top third.
- 37:37Zimmer second now and we go to the top of the batting order to pick up Jim Gilliam.
- 37:42Jim flies to center in the first inning to Burden.
- 37:46So he's all for one.
- 37:48Gilliam 254 looking for his 41st base hit of the year.
- 37:52Lahr checks up with the runner at second.
- 37:54Delivers and Gilliam takes a lot of fastball low and outside to ball one.
- 38:06Gilliam waving at Wood around as a left hand hitter against this right hand pitcher.
- 38:10Delivers.
- 38:11There's a pitch low to Gilliam.
- 38:13Ball two.
- 38:14Two balls and no strikes.
- 38:17Don Zimmer who runs the bases pretty well is on his second in pretty good scoring position.
- 38:22They're two down.
- 38:23The Dodgers are batting atop the third of the scoreless ball game.
- 38:27Lahr going against Sal Magley.
- 38:29Lahr kicks the pitch loose.
- 38:30Gilliam after it with another high fly ball.
- 38:32This one's to left center field.
- 38:33Frank Thomas coming over.
- 38:35He's under it and he takes it.
- 38:38So that's all for Gilliam and the Dodgers and the Thread in the third inning.
- 38:41The runs one hit.
- 38:42The Dodgers lead their first man.
- 38:44And the score at the end of two and one half innings of play.
- 38:47Remains the Dodgers nothing.
- 38:48The Pittsburgh Pirates have nothing.
- 38:50Speaking to us, Ben Schuller.
- 38:52Well friends, when does a batter call a pitcher an iron mic?
- 38:55Well, it's when the pitcher's having an off day.
- 38:58When he's easier to hit than iron mic, the pitching machine.
- 39:01But you know, after the ball game, both pitcher and batter have the same name for genuine smoking enjoyment.
- 39:07For a genuine cigarette.
- 39:09And that of course is lucky strike.
- 39:11Why luckies?
- 39:12Well, here's why.
- 39:13You see, a lucky is all cigarettes.
- 39:15All fine tobacco.
- 39:17Mild, naturally, good tasting tobacco that's toasted to taste even better.
- 39:22Cleaner, fresher, smoother.
- 39:25Have you tried a lucky lately?
- 39:27Well friends, if you haven't, you try one right now.
- 39:29And you'll say, like all of us say, it's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 39:36Just breezing along here in Pittsburgh.
- 39:38No score at the end of two and a half innings of play.
- 39:40Sal Magley and Vernon Law.
- 39:42Second game, it'll be Sandy Kovacs and Bob Perkins.
- 39:45Now to the bottom of the third, here's Al.
- 39:48The number eight hitter in the Pittsburgh order, catcher Hank Foyles.
- 39:51Will be coming up to the plate, batting a 266.
- 39:54He has three home runs for the year and has ten runs batted in.
- 39:58Following Foyles, we'll have the pitcher Vernon Law, and then we'll skip off to the top of the pirate batting order to pick up Del Mazurostro.
- 40:04Sal Magley, ready to go to work here in his 80 degree temperature, and it's a sandy day here in Falks Field in Pittsburgh.
- 40:11Go wherever you are, just as pretty and just as pleasant.
- 40:16Sidearm curved, and Foyles, the right-hand hitter, is outside, football one.
- 40:25Magley takes his time.
- 40:27Over his head he goes, delivers, another curve ball.
- 40:29This one's hit on two hops, down to short.
- 40:31Reese waits for it to come to him, then fires over to first and plenty of time and Foyles is up.
- 40:37One away in the last half of the third inning.
- 40:39The batter now will be Vernon Law.
- 40:42As the batsman, Law is hitting at 400.
- 40:45He has four, four tens.
- 40:48He has no home runs.
- 40:49He has two runs batted in.
- 40:51He flipped that ball pretty well for you.
- 40:53All slender right-handers.
- 40:56As he steps up to the plate, he looks down to third base to see what Bobby Bregan might have in mind.
- 41:01Magley already has his sign, ready to go to work, as Zimmer crawls in from third.
- 41:05The pitch is under the knees to Vernon Law for ball one.
- 41:12Following today's doubleheader with Pittsburgh Pirates, the sidearm curve.
- 41:17That's over to the knees for strike one.
- 41:21Following this doubleheader, the Crookman Dodgers will climb on a rattle tonight and be headed to Philadelphia for tomorrow night's game,
- 41:27on Browning Mac Stadium.
- 41:29Sidearm pitch at the knees good for strike two.
- 41:32Count on Law as one ball and two strikes.
- 41:36Then on Saturday night, the Dodgers play the Phillies again.
- 41:39That game will be TV'd right back to New York over Channel 9.
- 41:45Sidearm pitch swung on.
- 41:46There's a slow-bounding ball down to a third.
- 41:48Haring is on.
- 41:49Zura picked up, goes underhand, and it's just in time.
- 41:52Law is out.
- 41:55Second out here in the last half of third inning.
- 41:58The bases are empty and Bill Mazurowski comes up to the plate.
- 42:03Sunday afternoon, ball game between Philadelphia and Brooklyn and on Monday night,
- 42:08there will be another TV'd right back to New York.
- 42:14Channel 9, one of the 25 road games being sent back, two fine co-sponsors.
- 42:20Sidearm pitch to Mazurowski is a little high and a little outside for ball one.
- 42:26Every time the ball games in Philadelphia, one to be televised, will be 7.55.
- 42:31That will be on Saturday night and Monday night.
- 42:36Magley's sidearm pitch drives Mazurowski back to the plate.
- 42:40So Bill's count is ball two.
- 42:48Magley's taking plenty of time between pitches.
- 42:51The thing about this veteran, he really knows how to pace himself.
- 42:56Mazurowski waits.
- 42:59Sidearm pitch is outside, ball three.
- 43:03Magley hasn't walked anybody, but he's in danger of passing Bill Mazurowski here in the third inning with two down and the bases empty.
- 43:10Scoreless ball game is Magley fires low, ball four.
- 43:14So the leadoff man walks.
- 43:16That's the first base on balls given up by Magley.
- 43:19That will be the tenth one he's put in the books this year.
- 43:22Coming up to the plate now will be Dee Fondy, who has the only hit given up by Magley.
- 43:27In the first inning with one out, Fondy hit a ball through the hole between first and second and into right field for a single.
- 43:33Head up to his batting percentage to 3.41.
- 43:37Left-hand hitter, feet wide, spread apart, stands about midway in batter's box all the way around.
- 43:42Magley checks his runner, Mazurowski, delivers the play, Fondy takes the pitches outside, the ball one.
- 43:59Mazurowski playing it right close to the vest for a space.
- 44:03Just holds the inside corner on him.
- 44:06Magley gets his sign and glares over it first.
- 44:09Mazurowski takes his lead. Magley to his set position, delivers, Fondy swings and bounces it far down to the right of the plate.
- 44:17One ball and one strike on first baseman Dee Fondy.
- 44:24Headlong talk with Dee just before the ball game started, sitting down on the pirate's bench.
- 44:29He likes it here in Pittsburgh.
- 44:34He gives Pittsburgh his vote over Chicago.
- 44:41Big fella pumps that bat around.
- 44:44Likeable guy this Fondy.
- 44:47Fetch to end the swing on, there's a land drive in the right field, it's in for a base hit.
- 44:51Mazurowski moves down to second and holds on as Ferrello's flow comes in to get him.
- 44:57So Fondy is 2 for 2. And with 2 down the Pirates now have runners at first and second.
- 45:04And the batter is Bob Clemente.
- 45:09So the partisan Pittsburgh crowd here for field.
- 45:14Jumping up and figuring maybe the Pittsburgh Pirates have something to do.
- 45:22Bob Clemente coming up for his second at bat in the afternoon. In the first inning he tried to get away from a high inside curve ball.
- 45:28The ball hit the bat and tapped it back to the left of the mound and Sal Magley threw him out.
- 45:32Bob's hitting a 2.84. Swim to right hand stickers.
- 45:36Mazurowski leads off at second base, Fondy first.
- 45:39Fetch Clemente swings, hits it tight back to second base.
- 45:41Gilliam up with it, throws to reach on the short hop and it's got Fondy.
- 45:44So that retires the side.
- 45:46Clemente forcing up, Fondy at second base.
- 45:50From Gilliam to reach.
- 45:52Over the Pirates, a threat and that's it.
- 45:55No runs, one hit. Coupled with the watch, two men were left on and there were no errors.
- 45:59The score at the end of three innings of play.
- 46:01The first game of the double header at Forksfield in Pittsburgh.
- 46:03The Dodgers nothing, the Pirates nothing.
- 46:07Gino Somoli has the only base hit given up so far by, correction, he has one of the two base hits given up by Vernon Law.
- 46:14Zimmer has the other.
- 46:16Gino Somoli leading it off, he got the first base hit of the ball game.
- 46:21Gino batting at 3.42, takes a high curve ball off the shoulder for ball one.
- 46:29Somoli, Snyder and Ferillo in that order in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 46:33Scoreless ball game and quite a pitching duel so far between Vernon Law on the Mount Mount for Pittsburgh and Sal Magley.
- 46:40Curve ball hit just inside third base, hits headed to the left field corner.
- 46:43Gino Somoli is digging fast first, he's on his way to second with those long strides.
- 46:47Thomas Oppy still comes into third.
- 46:50Somoli has doubled.
- 46:52That ball was hit just there inside third base.
- 46:56Law's given up his third base hit. Somoli has two of them.
- 47:01Duke Snyder coming along.
- 47:07Nobody out, top of the fourth, Somoli leading off with a double.
- 47:11Ripped past third and down into left field corner.
- 47:15Duke Snyder hit into a double play in the first inning, he's 0-1 batting at 2.65.
- 47:20Law delivers to him a soft curve and it comes right up the middle in the center field for a base hit.
- 47:25Somoli comes to third, Herman says keep on going boy and Somoli comes in to score the first one.
- 47:31Snyder singles to center field driving the first run of the ball game.
- 47:36Gino Somoli coming across.
- 47:40That will be hit number four, run number one off Law and the Dodgers now lead it one to nothing.
- 47:46The batter is Carl Ferrello.
- 47:48For Snyder, there at first base, he has his 18th run batted in this year.
- 47:54One to nothing Brooklyn, top of the fourth inning.
- 47:57Carl Ferrello is 0-1. He started the second inning rolling out to the right side.
- 48:0423-27, leans back from a fast ball and takes it off the chest for ball one.
- 48:14Lucky strike sent into the action, fourth field.
- 48:20And when it comes right up time for you, let's hope you're enjoying our lucky.
- 48:26Fast ball hit down to the right side, Masurowski's got it, clips over to Baker for one and he returns for the first for double play.
- 48:33That's the second double play, the Pittsburgh Pirates come up with, that'll boost their total now to 36
- 48:38and that'll send a thousand luckies to our VA hospital at Lions, New Jersey.
- 48:45Four to six to three on the double play if you're keeping score with us.
- 48:50The other two down in the fourth inning, the bases are now empty.
- 48:53Coming up to the plate is Gil Hodges.
- 48:56One to nothing favor Brooklyn.
- 48:59Somoli let off of the double, Snyder single him in.
- 49:02The pitch is swung on, there's a high foul ball hit off to the left side of the plate.
- 49:06That'll fade to the crowd and go out of play.
- 49:09Strike one on Gil.
- 49:12Hodges was thrown out, his first setback by second baseman Bill Masurowski.
- 49:17He has a 12-game hitting streak on the line this afternoon, batting in 3-36.
- 49:29Now he sets some pitches, high and outside.
- 49:36One ball and one strike.
- 49:45In rides the next pitch, a fastball, a little outside, a little low.
- 49:50Hodges started to go and changed his mind.
- 49:52Two balls and one strike.
- 49:55O'Brien an infielder is down in the Pittsburgh bullpen throwing.
- 49:59Maybe that he'll come into the ball game for Pittsburgh.
- 50:05Somebody from the bench apparently has given Frank Shikora plate umpire a little jockeying.
- 50:10He pulls his mask off and turns around and looks into the Pittsburgh dugout.
- 50:17Now we're ready to count if two balls one strike on Gil Hodges.
- 50:20Two down, the bases empty, one to nothing Brooklyn.
- 50:22O'Brien and Law bends that right soup bone, curve a swing on and missed for a strike two.
- 50:28Two balls and two strikes.
- 50:39All right back to Hodges, swings on the pitch and sends a high bounder to second base.
- 50:43Masurowski charges, grabs, flips, first.
- 50:45Hodges is out, metric, eyes aside.
- 50:49The fourth inning produces one run for the Brooklyn Dodgers on a double and a single hit back to back.
- 50:55Somoli leading it off and trying to get him in.
- 50:59There were no errors.
- 51:01Nobody left on thanks to the double play.
- 51:03Score at the end of three and a half innings.
- 51:05First game it is the Dodgers one, the Pittsburgh Pirates have nothing.
- 51:15Last of the fourth inning, one nothing Brooklyn, Frank Thomas coming up right back to Al.
- 51:20Thomas has been up once today.
- 51:21He retired to third in the first inning following up to Roy Campanella.
- 51:24Big right hand hitter, likely with one run to go on delivers and Thomas swings on it.
- 51:28Get a hold of it, there's a long jolt going deep to the floorboard in left field.
- 51:46Frank Thomas hits his fifth home run of the year, drives in his 20th run and he really pulled like Suttman.
- 51:52All up over the clock, left floorboard in straight away left field.
- 51:57All the way out on the Schinley oval.
- 52:01Right out into the park.
- 52:05Oh that's the second hit in the first run.
- 52:08Off back lead, it's all tied up at one of B.
- 52:11Here's Baker up there backing off from a curve ball that flips in an over first strike.
- 52:16Baker over one.
- 52:22All tied at one of B.
- 52:28Overhand curve is outside and low.
- 52:31Baker's count one and one.
- 52:39And to the great leveler, the home run.
- 52:42The great equalizer.
- 52:46Magnet comes down again, Baker starts to chase a little curve and then decides to take it. Ball two.
- 52:52Two balls in one strike.
- 52:54Baker hitting a 266.
- 53:04Magnet scowling down from the mound, looks at this choke hitter.
- 53:07Delivered him a curve, that's low.
- 53:10Baker again started to go.
- 53:12Changed up in time.
- 53:14Two balls in one strike.
- 53:20Frank Thomas home run.
- 53:22Here marks another thousand lucky for our VA hospital at Lyons.
- 53:28Back lead sidearm curve, reach ball and foul shift.
- 53:31That's strike two.
- 53:33Two strikes.
- 53:47Down in the Brooklyn bullpen.
- 53:50Right hander, Eddie Roebuck up and throwing.
- 53:53Magnet delivers three-two.
- 53:55Fitch is swung on and hit down the reach.
- 53:57Oh, it's too hot.
- 53:58The captain's got it.
- 53:59Whistles and throw to first base.
- 54:00Baker is out.
- 54:02What a way in the last half of the fourth inning of the tie-up ball game.
- 54:07Gene Fries coming up for his second at-back.
- 54:10In the second he flies to left field to Gino Somoli.
- 54:14Fries batting at 232.
- 54:19I guess you just hooked up with it.
- 54:21The Brooklyn Dodgers had things break their way in the top half of the fourth when Somoli doubled past third in the left field corner.
- 54:26Snyder's single to get him home as they fix to Fries high inside, ball one.
- 54:34And Perillo hit into a double play and Rogers rolled out to the right side.
- 54:37Going into the last half of the fourth inning, the Dodgers had a one-run ball.
- 54:41Frank Thomas proceeded to lift one high and deep over the left field wall scoreboard and clock to tie it up.
- 54:47Inside curve ball off the knee is McAdams two balls and no strikes now to Gene Fries.
- 55:02Fries waiting fashionably.
- 55:04Maggley ready to work to him.
- 55:07The two-nothing delivery.
- 55:08Soft curve in there for the strike.
- 55:15Two and one.
- 55:17One out, the base is empty.
- 55:18Last half of the fourth inning.
- 55:20The Pittsburgh Pirates hit back.
- 55:22Here in the first game of the doubleheader at fourth field in Pittsburgh.
- 55:26Maggley sidearm fastball.
- 55:28Swung on, hit back foul.
- 55:34What a catch made by a young lady sitting right down to the right of the screen.
- 55:41Two balls, two strikes.
- 55:43Down on Gene Fries.
- 55:44Bill Burton hanging around to hit next.
- 55:50Maggley ready.
- 55:53Red herring pump step one time.
- 55:55Delivers an overhand curve.
- 55:56It's swung on the mid-foot strike three.
- 55:59It's Maggley's first strike out.
- 56:06Two down for the Pirates.
- 56:07Last half of the fourth inning and the batter will be Bill Burton.
- 56:10A pounding ball to kill him in the second inning, closed up things for Pittsburgh and for him, so he's up there now.
- 56:16Batting at two oh two.
- 56:19Left hand hitter.
- 56:24Maggley works down to this young fellow.
- 56:26Burton leans and doesn't offer and a pitch is in there anyway.
- 56:30No balls and one strike.
- 56:34Philadelphia and New York.
- 56:36Nothing, nothing.
- 56:37First inning of their first game.
- 56:40Pitch, fix the corner.
- 56:42Knee high on the outside.
- 56:44Back strike two.
- 56:46No balls, two strikes.
- 56:51Lucky strike.
- 56:52Very happy to be sending it to you from Pittsburgh.
- 56:55Looker, swung on the mid strike three.
- 56:57That's the second strike out.
- 57:00Maggley closes up shop for Pittsburgh in the fourth inning, but not before they pick up a run to tie up the ball game on Thomas' home run.
- 57:07That was a hit in the inning.
- 57:09No errors and nobody was left on.
- 57:11So the score at the end of four full innings of play.
- 57:14It's the Dodgers one.
- 57:16The Pittsburgh Pirates have won.
- 57:27The FNM Schaeffer day, we move into the top half of the fifth inning with Campanella coming up.
- 57:30Stepping up for the FNM Schaeffer Brewing Company for the play by play, Vince Gulley.
- 57:34Thank you.
- 57:35Hi everybody.
- 57:36Campanella checks his swing and the curve ball bites off the outside corner for a strike.
- 57:40Owen Wanderoy who struck out in the second inning batting 240.
- 57:44A 1-1 tie in the fifth inning.
- 57:46We're all back with a slow curve.
- 57:48This cut on a high foul, spinning back towards Dinette.
- 57:51And goes back into the crowd and a young fellow in a striped portrait makes a one-hand catch.
- 57:58Going through the count.
- 58:01Campanella, Reese, and Zimmer.
- 58:03The way Bretman comes up here in the fifth inning of a 1-1 tie in the first game of two.
- 58:08Law comes right back, 0-2.
- 58:09Canby belts it to left center field.
- 58:11Going over is Frank Thomas and Phil Verdon is going to bounce over into the ivy up against the light tower.
- 58:16Verdon bobbles the ball momentarily.
- 58:18Campanella goes to second and then holds there.
- 58:20Dean Baker runs the relay back towards the infield.
- 58:23So Campanella rips one to deepest left center.
- 58:26Well over 400 feet away as it bounced against the ivy and then right into the corner where the light stanchion is.
- 58:33Tell you how far away it is.
- 58:35They usually put the batting cage out there, figuring it will not be in the way.
- 58:38And that ball was only about 20 feet to the left of the cage.
- 58:41Campanella, long double to left center.
- 58:45Hit number five off Vernon Law.
- 58:47Nobody out on the batter, Peewee Reese.
- 58:50Peewee hitting 195, bounced out short to first in the third inning.
- 58:53He's 0-1.
- 58:56The outfield on Reese about straight away.
- 58:58Clemente is up a step or two and right.
- 59:01Law checks second and delivers and Reese has to shy away from a pitch high and inside for one.
- 59:08Giants leading the Phillies at the end of two innings, one to nothing.
- 59:12Andre Rodgers hits a home run.
- 59:16He's probably playing third base.
- 59:18That was Bill Rigney's idea.
- 59:20Move out the verge of the left field.
- 59:22One-0 pitch to Reese's slice foul, way down the right field.
- 59:25Line bangs off the upper deck facade and nestles down below.
- 59:29Washington with their three-game winning streak and I imagine they should be proud of it.
- 59:33Gee, things have been going pretty miserable for Cookie, Lavagetto and crew.
- 59:37Well they won three straight and they lead the Yankees 2-0 at the end of three innings.
- 59:43The Moleys red-sots 2-0 at the end of one inning.
- 59:46No report of the other two games out west, Cleveland, Chicago, Kansas City and Detroit.
- 59:51The 1-1 pitch to Reese, a slow curve outside and low, ball through, 2-1.
- 59:56Cause of the time difference, nothing to report to you about the Cubs and Milwaukee and Cincinnati and St. Louis.
- 1:00:03We'll duck them in all day for you.
- 1:00:072-1 to Reese, Campanella at second base, nobody out on the fifth inning of a 1-1 tie.
- 1:00:12Law comes to the plate and Reese takes low, ball three, 3-1.
- 1:00:31Peewee just waiting at the plate, Law gonna make him wait.
- 1:00:34Campanella hands on his hip, pinching away off second base.
- 1:00:38Law ready, now the 3-1 pitch to Reese, caught on a hot one to the hole and through for a face hit.
- 1:00:43Campanella goes to third, Clemente Guns is thrown, he'll hold him at third.
- 1:00:46A one-pouncer to the plate by Bob Clemente.
- 1:00:49So Billy Herman, wisely holding Campanella at third.
- 1:00:53So Reese a single to right, Campanella goes to third and holds there.
- 1:01:00Reese in going down the line might have pulled a muscle in his leg.
- 1:01:05And he's giving way to Charlie Neal at first base.
- 1:01:09And Reese showing disgust with the breaks of the game, gonna reaches down and picks up some grass and with his head down pops off the field.
- 1:01:17So Peewee pulled a muscle, he's not limping too much but you know it's there.
- 1:01:22And he seems to be on the disgusted side as he comes back to the dugout.
- 1:01:25So Charlie Neal takes over running for Peewee Reese.
- 1:01:33So Reese is out hurting his leg if we get any further report.
- 1:01:36He did not limp coming off but apparently he pulled something, he felt something give.
- 1:01:45Now that run is at first and third, nobody out, Don Zimmer the batter who promptly swings and runs your back foul, 0-1-1.
- 1:01:53So Peewee having a very bad spring, started late before he could get into the lineup due to injuries.
- 1:02:00And now here at Forbes Field, a finally pulled a muscle in his leg and gives way to Charlie Neal.
- 1:02:10The strike one pitch to Zimmer, he half waves at an outside pitch but just does check his swing.
- 1:02:15One ball, one strike.
- 1:02:21They could move that infield around a bit, we're waiting to see how they do it.
- 1:02:25A couple of possibilities with Reese out, one and one to Zimmer.
- 1:02:32For Pitch now, Don swings and fouls that one away, one and two.
- 1:02:36It could be that Neal would play second base, Gilliam would play third and Zimmer play short.
- 1:02:42Neal last year, you remember, played a little bit of shortstop so he could just take over for Reese.
- 1:02:48We're waiting to see.
- 1:02:50Nobody out running at first and third in the fifth inning of a 1-1 tie.
- 1:02:54Neal inching off the bag at first, Campanella from third.
- 1:02:57The pitch to Zimmer in the dirt and blocked nicely by Hank Foyles.
- 1:03:00Two and two.
- 1:03:02We owe a station break so after Zimmer has had his hat back, we'll duck it in.
- 1:03:08Hope you've ducked in plenty of cheaper beer in the refrigerator to keep it nice and cold.
- 1:03:16Two-two pitch to Don Zimmer, cut on a fly ball into fairly shallow right center.
- 1:03:20Flametti going over, Campanella tags, Flametti with the ball, here comes Campanella.
- 1:03:24Here comes the throw to the plate, he flies, he saves.
- 1:03:27The ball is backed up with the plate by Vernon Law and down to second goes Charlie Neal.
- 1:03:32Hank Foyles tried to block the plate and Campanella ripped right under him.
- 1:03:36The ball squirted away and the lurch fielding by Vernon Law prevented Neal from taking an extra base.
- 1:03:43So Zimmer, a fly ball into right center to Bob Flametti for the outs.
- 1:03:47Campanella tags up and brings in the run and Neal advances to second base.
- 1:03:53So gives Zimmer an RBI, the run comes over.
- 1:03:57Added his two-to-one Brooklyn, no error on the play.
- 1:04:01Let's get that station break in.
- 1:04:03This is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 1:04:07And your Brooklyn Dodgers station for the capital district, WOKO, first in Albany, 1460 on your dial.
- 1:04:13Out in Indianapolis at the end of eight laps, 200 miles down the drain of the 500-mile race,
- 1:04:18Sam Hanks is leading out there for the 500-mile race crown today.
- 1:04:23Now back to baseball.
- 1:04:27Magley sacrificed in the third inning, swings it a pitch and doesn't get it on one.
- 1:04:32Magley batting 125, he has one hit.
- 1:04:37For a double, a single, and a scoring fly ball, and Brooklyn breaks the tie and takes the lead 2-1.
- 1:04:44Fifth inning, one out.
- 1:04:47Law checks his signs with Hank Foyle.
- 1:04:49Now it comes to the plate and a sharp curve, cut on and missed on two.
- 1:05:00On that, Jim Gilliam.
- 1:05:04Foyle has everything in his way now to Magley, no balls and two strikes.
- 1:05:08Vernon Ready and delivers. Sal takes outside, ball one, one and two.
- 1:05:15Lovely day today here in Pittsburgh.
- 1:05:18Warm but comfortable.
- 1:05:20Nice crowd on hand watching the beginning of a big double header.
- 1:05:29Foyle Ready, Foyle settles low back of the plate.
- 1:05:32One and two pitch to Magley, a curve ball outside, two and two.
- 1:05:42Brooklyn two runs on six hits, the Pirates one run on four hits, one run on three hits, excuse me.
- 1:05:50The two-two pitch now to Magley, cut on as a fly ball to right field,
- 1:05:53Clemente with shallow has to go back and leap in the air and grab it, and Charlie Neal holds on at second base.
- 1:06:00Magley hits the ball well and lines out to Bob Clemente in right field.
- 1:06:04Two down, Charlie Neal holding at second base and a batter Jim Gilliam.
- 1:06:12Jim started off the spring roaring, got up his highs in the 400 category, started to skid down to the 240s.
- 1:06:19Then out West picked up, he had seven hits and 14 at bats, got his average back up to about 280s,
- 1:06:24and he's starting to skid down again, he's batting 252.
- 1:06:28So Junior really rides the elevator, especially early in the year.
- 1:06:32May is not a particularly good month for Gilliam, however if he follows his pattern,
- 1:06:38he'll start to really get his base hits again in June.
- 1:06:41Junior takes a strike on one.
- 1:06:45Gilliam with ten runs batted in, that's fly to center, fly to left, 0 for two.
- 1:06:55Law comes set, a peek at Charlie Neal, the pitch to Gilliam, a little high, one ball, one strike.
- 1:07:02Meeting number ten between these two.
- 1:07:04The Dodgers haven't taken five out of nine, but the Pirates have taken three out of five here at Ford Field.
- 1:07:14The 1-1 pitch to Gilliam, cut on hit off the thumbs and foul down the left-fielder line upstairs, one and two.
- 1:07:22Junior didn't get around on a fastball, and they count one ball, two strikes.
- 1:07:33Lerner, Law, and Sal Magley in this first game.
- 1:07:36Sandy Kovacs and Bob Perky tab to do the work in the second.
- 1:07:40One and two pitch to Gilliam, high ball, two, two and two.
- 1:07:45We'll leave Pittsburgh tonight at about 11 o'clock or thereabouts, spend the night on the train going to Philadelphia.
- 1:07:54Play Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday afternoon, and Monday night.
- 1:07:59Two, two pitch to Gilliam.
- 1:08:01Jim swings and hooks her foul way down the right-field line that goes in the upper deck.
- 1:08:06Holding count, two and two.
- 1:08:19Two and two.
- 1:08:24Gilliam is moving that bat back and forth.
- 1:08:26Law comes set, looks to Charlie Neal at second, and delivers just inside, ball three.
- 1:08:34Four-all's a mild dispute with plate on fire, Frank Secori.
- 1:08:38Hook out now to Jim Gilliam.
- 1:08:40Charlie Neal running for Peewee Reese, who hurt his leg.
- 1:08:43Charlie down at second base.
- 1:08:45Two out, Brooklyn two, fire is one in the fifth inning.
- 1:08:51Four-all's wigwagging signs out now.
- 1:08:53Law gives him a reading, picks off the one that he wants.
- 1:08:58Three, two, pitch to Jim Gilliam.
- 1:09:00Cut on is a high fly ball into shallow left.
- 1:09:02It's an easy play for Frank Thomas, just standing there waiting and takes it.
- 1:09:08In the fifth inning for Brooklyn, they put together a double, a single, and a scoring fly ball.
- 1:09:12One run, two hits.
- 1:09:13Leave one man.
- 1:09:15There were no pirate errors until the score at the end of four and a half innings of play.
- 1:09:18Brooklyn two, Pittsburgh one.
- 1:09:29We're ready now for the last half of the fifth inning and the infield changes for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 1:09:33Neal will go to third base, and Don Zimmer will move over to the shortstop taking on where Reese leaves off.
- 1:09:41So that's it for the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:09:43Foyles comes to the plate now for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:09:45The Dodgers lead it two to one.
- 1:09:46Let's get right back to the inning.
- 1:09:48Well, Katja Hang Foyles batting 263, bounced out short the first in the third inning.
- 1:09:52He's 0 for one.
- 1:09:53Maggley ready, hooks him, and if it's just cut on, a high foul to the left of the plate.
- 1:09:57He'll go back into the crowd.
- 1:09:594-1.
- 1:10:00Foyles has three home runs, ten runs ratted in.
- 1:10:03The crowd gets a few giggles out of the race for that foul ball.
- 1:10:14Memorial Day 1957 here at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.
- 1:10:19Strike one pitch to Hang Foyles.
- 1:10:21Cut on, slice now foul on the upper deck or first base.
- 1:10:250-2.
- 1:10:31End of three innings and the only other ballgame we can report on in the National League.
- 1:10:35Giants 1, Phillies nothing on Andre Rogers' home run.
- 1:10:40They'll do the games in the American League starting.
- 1:10:42Washington leading the Yankees 2-0 at the end of three.
- 1:10:44Baltimore 2, Red Sox nothing at the end of two.
- 1:10:47Curved ball low and outside to Hang Foyles.
- 1:10:49One ball, two strikes.
- 1:10:51We're in the bottom of the fifth inning, Brooklyn 2 and the Pirates 1.
- 1:10:55The Dodgers two runs on six hits and the Pirates one run on three hits.
- 1:10:59The big hit, Thomas' home run in the fourth inning.
- 1:11:02One and two pitch for Foyles, swings and nubs your foul to the left of the plate.
- 1:11:06Cattle's one and two.
- 1:11:10Memorial Day, a day of memories.
- 1:11:16I bet you can probably think on a lighter side, baseball wise.
- 1:11:20It happened on Memorial Days in the past.
- 1:11:27Also that 500-mile saucer at Indianapolis will get a workout today.
- 1:11:33The one and two pitch now, Magley slides it in and it whacks right on by Charlie Neal and down the left of your line.
- 1:11:38Gino Somoli chasing it into the corner.
- 1:11:40Hang Foyles on his way with a stand-up double.
- 1:11:49Oh, Hang Foyles, ripped one by Charlie Neal just inside third and down the line.
- 1:11:55So the Dodgers leading 2-1 in the lead in jeopardy.
- 1:11:58Foyles at second base with nobody out and Vernon Law the batter.
- 1:12:01The Dodger bullfinns, swings into action, Eddie Robuck up right away.
- 1:12:06Vernon Law is a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 1:12:09His average shows 364.
- 1:12:12He has two runs batted in.
- 1:12:14When Law first joined the Pirates a few years ago,
- 1:12:17and the Dodgers of course always have a habit prior to a ballgame like every other club
- 1:12:21of watching the opposing team take batting practice.
- 1:12:24The day that Vernon Law first pitched against Brooklyn when he hit with the regulars,
- 1:12:28boys on the bench were really impressed with him.
- 1:12:31He's a rangey fellow and slightly at the knees, but he's no automatic out up there, not by a long shot.
- 1:12:36Neal comes inside the bag at third as Magley comes to the plate.
- 1:12:39The pitcher's smothered up towards first.
- 1:12:41Cabanela's going to let the ball roll and pitch it up relatedly towards the first just in time.
- 1:12:47Roy started to go after the ball and then it started to spin away,
- 1:12:50and for a moment you could just about read Cabanela's mind.
- 1:12:53Maybe it's just too good a front. Maybe you ought to let it roll foul.
- 1:12:56Then the ball hugged the chalkmine and Cabanela figured, uh-oh, better make the play, and he just did.
- 1:13:02So the sacrifice works.
- 1:13:042-4 from Roy Cabanela to Jim Gilliam.
- 1:13:07Fank Foyles advancing to third.
- 1:13:10One out, the tying run at third base, and the batter Bill Mazurowski who has bounced out and walked.
- 1:13:15Mazurowski batting 2-0-2 in the Dodgers, now crowd home plate.
- 1:13:18The infield moves in.
- 1:13:20That's as Hodges, Gilliam, Zimmer, and Neal.
- 1:13:28Magley looks over at third.
- 1:13:29It's Hank Foyles now works to Mazurowski, a curve that stays high and inside, ball one.
- 1:13:35The second baseman has hit two home runs, and he has four runs batted in.
- 1:13:43Magley trying to rub a couple of wrinkles into that baseball now while he turns and looks over at third.
- 1:13:492-1 Brooklyn, bottom of the fifth, one out, Foyles at third.
- 1:13:53The 1-0 pitch to Mazurowski, low and inside, ball two, 2-0.
- 1:13:58Mazurowski waiting, 2-0 to count.
- 1:14:14Magley takes his full windup.
- 1:14:16The 2-0 pitch to Mazurowski, cut on a huck one to Neal who holds his runner,
- 1:14:20throws over to first for the out, and then Hodges comes right back towards the infield to make sure Foyles remains.
- 1:14:26Mazurowski bounce out third to first, two down, Foyles holding at third base, and the batter D. Fondy who is two for two.
- 1:14:34Fondy both times, singling to right.
- 1:14:38D batting 3-47.
- 1:14:42He hurt Newcomb and Brooklyn the other night when as a pinch hitter he blew the single to center to drive in a big run that tied it up.
- 1:14:50The Pirates eventually won it in 11 and increased it to two.
- 1:14:54The second batter, Magley ready to come to him, and the curve is cut on in this first fight.
- 1:14:594-1.
- 1:15:01I think if you pulled the Dodgers they would say about as fast a man in the league going from home plate to first base as this D. Fondy.
- 1:15:08Time called momentarily, Frank Secori the plate umpire points out to the left field corner.
- 1:15:13Joe Becker going over to receive a baseball that got loose from the Brooklyn bullpen.
- 1:15:22Two out, Hank Foyles at third, bottom of the fifth inning, 2-1 Brooklyn.
- 1:15:27Fondy waiting with the count 0-1.
- 1:15:29Magley ready and comes to him, curve out of the plate, 0-2.
- 1:15:570-2 to Fondy, Magley taking time now, it's a big spot.
- 1:16:01Sal Wines on the strike, two-pitch to Fondy outside, 4-1.
- 1:16:061-2.
- 1:16:08The infield of course was two out back into normal depth.
- 1:16:11The outfield and in particular Duke Schneider, very deep.
- 1:16:15Schneider's away out there.
- 1:16:21Magley Wines, a 1-2 pitch to D, taken outside again, ball two.
- 1:16:25So, Deuce is wild here in the fifth inning.
- 1:16:27Two balls, two strikes, two out, Brooklyn leads 2-1.
- 1:16:32Hank Foyles holding at third.
- 1:16:47Magley ready, now the 2-2 pitch to D, Fondy, cut on, fouled away.
- 1:17:08Count holes, 2-2.
- 1:17:10Magley just kind of wandering around out there at the mound, looks to his outfield, now turns around.
- 1:17:20Sal looks over third, now ready.
- 1:17:22The 2-2 pitch to D, Fondy, cut on, is a high fly ball to left.
- 1:17:25Dino Somolius right there, it's an easy play, waxes glove and takes the ball for the out.
- 1:17:31So the Pirates are turned away empty handed in the fifth inning.
- 1:17:34No runs, one hit, they leave a man at third base.
- 1:17:37And the score at the end of five innings of play, Brooklyn 2 and the Pirates 1.
- 1:17:43All right, right back to action, let's get back to them.
- 1:17:46Before we get to the action, we have some good news for all you boat lovers,
- 1:17:49whether you own a row boat or a yacht, the F&M Shape of Brewing Company is sponsoring a new radio program
- 1:17:54entitled This Week in Boating.
- 1:17:56It's just the kind of show you boatmen have been waiting for.
- 1:17:58A summary of news, weather forecasts, tips and features stories of the boating world.
- 1:18:02This Week in Boating, a 15-minute radio show beginning this Friday night at 1115
- 1:18:07and will be a regular Friday night feature.
- 1:18:10For all you boat lovers, remember This Week in Boating at 1115.
- 1:18:13Check your local newspaper for the station and anchors away.
- 1:18:17All right, sixth inning, 2-1 Brooklyn and Somoli takes a strike.
- 1:18:21Dino has a single and a double batting 3.48.
- 1:18:27Dino prior to today in his sixth game since returning to the lineup, hit at a 400 clip.
- 1:18:32Swinged now and is a high fly ball to center.
- 1:18:34Burden charging it, still coming on, she dropped in for a base hit.
- 1:18:38So as the ball players say, Dino's living right, gets his third hit, a looping single to center.
- 1:18:47That is hit number seven off Vernon Law.
- 1:18:50Brooklyn leading 2-1.
- 1:18:52So Somoli with a single, a double, and now a blue single to center.
- 1:18:56That brings up Duke Snyder who is hit into a double play and single to center to drive in around Duke batting 2.71.
- 1:19:04Law comes set, checks Somoli and delivers and Snyder takes way high, ball one.
- 1:19:11First of two games, second game it will be Sandy Koufax and Bob Perkey.
- 1:19:22Law throws over to first, Somoli did not have a big lead, gets right back.
- 1:19:26One ball, no strikes, the counter Snyder.
- 1:19:30Law again throws over there and Dino's back.
- 1:19:40Snyder takes a look at a balloon that's way high, ball two.
- 1:19:56Two and all to Snyder, sixth inning, Brooklyn two, Pirates one.
- 1:20:01Vernon Law comes set, looks to Somoli, delivers, Snyder way out in front of that change up.
- 1:20:06Boy he almost came out of his uniform, two balls one strike.
- 1:20:15Giants one, Phillies nothing at the end of three, only other game underway in the National League.
- 1:20:19Duck in what we have in the American League.
- 1:20:21Washington two, Yankees nothing at the end of four.
- 1:20:23Baltimore two, Red Sox nothing at the end of three.
- 1:20:28The 2-1 pitch to Snyder, another pitch is Pellet high and deep to right field.
- 1:20:32They're going to go over and out, a home run for Snyder over the right field screen and back into the crowd.
- 1:20:37So the Duke has listed one, his ninth home run.
- 1:20:41He now has 20 runs batted in and the Dodgers lead four to one.
- 1:20:48So Law after changing up and making Snyder look so badly came back with another change up.
- 1:20:53The Duke was waiting.
- 1:20:55It's 300 feet down the right field line here at Forbes Field,
- 1:20:59and they have not only the wall but a high screen atop it.
- 1:21:02Snyder's drive cleared everything and went right down an exit gate.
- 1:21:06The Duke's second hit, three RBIs for him in this ball game.
- 1:21:11Brooklyn four, Pirates one in the sixth inning and the batter Carl Perillo was bounced out and hit into a double play batting 325.
- 1:21:19Law delivers and Carl takes the strike on one.
- 1:21:25The Braggley will have a little bit of breathing room now for one Brooklyn.
- 1:21:31Law right back again on one and the breaking ball is low, one ball one strike.
- 1:21:37The F&M Shaffer Brewing Company of Brooklyn, Brewers of America's oldest lager beer,
- 1:21:41wishing you the very best on this Memorial Day wherever you may be.
- 1:21:45Hope you're doing just what you want to do.
- 1:21:47One runner is cut on and fouled away, one and two.
- 1:21:52I think on holidays, especially a day like today or July 4th or Labor Day,
- 1:21:57it's not growing in the background of park policemen chasing a foul.
- 1:22:01I think with so many people off, we ought to tip our hats especially to the policemen and state police
- 1:22:06and Florida authority men that do such a great job on tangling those traffic jams, huh?
- 1:22:11One and two feet is way high if all too soon to farm in those fellows who are stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel,
- 1:22:17the Battery Tunnel, or Holland Tunnel on the George Washington Bridge.
- 1:22:22They do a great job.
- 1:22:25Really need them on a day like today.
- 1:22:28Two two-fits now to Brillo, cut on, there's a high fly ball to left center, it's pretty deep and in the middle.
- 1:22:33Over goes Verdon on the run, crisscrossing is Thomas and it's Verdon for the catch.
- 1:22:38So Brillo a long out to left center.
- 1:22:42One down.
- 1:22:50The batter Gil Hodges, who twice, since the pirates are pitching outside to him,
- 1:22:54tried to go to right and twice he's bounced out to Maseroski.
- 1:22:58Gil batting 333 and one of the big reasons why he's been hitting so well is his almost newfound ability
- 1:23:04to consistently hit that outside pitch.
- 1:23:09Already in delivers, Hodges takes a half swing and checks to pitch up high, ball one, one and oh.
- 1:23:17Gil so many times would get in trouble up there if he played by taking the outside pitch on the corner,
- 1:23:22but now he's going after it and doing very well.
- 1:23:26One oh pitch, Gil runs up and bunts and hits a sharply foul outside of third, one and one.
- 1:23:33So Hodges coming back to hit again.
- 1:23:43One out here in the sixth inning, two runs are over for Brooklyn thanks to Snyder's home run, his ninth.
- 1:23:48And the Dodges lead four to one.
- 1:23:58Hodges just waiting at the plate on Degroy Campanella.
- 1:24:13The one one pitch to Hodges now, full swing on a curve ball, he doesn't get it, one and two.
- 1:24:21Brooklyn four runs on eight hits, no errors. The Pirates one run on four hits, no errors.
- 1:24:32The Dodges have had a home run hit by Snyder and Frank Thomas at one for Pittsburgh.
- 1:24:38One and two pitch to Hodges, curve cut on and hits slowly wide at third over into the hole,
- 1:24:42comes Baker's hurried throw is not in time. So Hodges legs one out for a base hit into the hole at short.
- 1:24:52That is hit number nine on Vernon Law.
- 1:24:57One out of the batter Roy Campanella who has struck out and doubled, can be batting 247.
- 1:25:17Law comes to Campanella who swings late and hits it in the up deck boxes on top of the roof, four and one.
- 1:25:29Brooklyn four, Pirates one, two runs over here in the sixth inning.
- 1:25:33One out, Hodges at first and the count to Campanella, no balls, one strike.
- 1:25:42Already in comes the plate and Campy takes two low, a puff of dirt, signals it was in the dirt, one and one.
- 1:25:48Campy has six home runs, 21 runs batted in.
- 1:25:54First sign of the summer, a little ladybug come flying in the booth.
- 1:26:02Two and one, pitch to Campy now, down low ball two, turn one.
- 1:26:16Two balls, one strike.
- 1:26:22Law comes set, takes a peek at Hodges, now delivers and Campanella takes low and outside, ball three.
- 1:26:28Vernon Law in trouble, trailing four to one to Brooklyn, Hodges at first with one out and he is falling behind to Campanella.
- 1:26:35Three and one, there goes Hodges, a hot one down to Maserachi who is over to cover the bag,
- 1:26:40feeds to Baker, high throw to first, is still out as D. Fondy makes the tag on Campanella.
- 1:26:46Oh they get the double play, Maserachi was breaking the cover as Hodges was going on the pitch and the ball was hit right at Maserachi.
- 1:26:54He fed to Baker and Baker's high throw to Fondy was still alright as D made the slight tag, four to six to three.
- 1:27:01So the Pirates now come up with three double plays thus far in six innings.
- 1:27:05For Brooklyn, two runs, three hits, a big blow tonight as home run with Somalia Boyd, nobody left on.
- 1:27:11At the end of five and a half innings of play, Brooklyn four and Pittsburgh one.
- 1:27:16Down to the last half, inning number six, the Brooklyn Dodgers are leading at four to one.
- 1:27:20Clemente coming up for the Pirates, has already been.
- 1:27:23All set out, before the play gets back in though, before it interferes with it,
- 1:27:27seeing that ladybug, remember when you were a kid, let's see now you weren't supposed to step on an ant because it would make it rain, remember?
- 1:27:33That's right.
- 1:27:34We had another one in the city that if you stepped on the cracks in the sidewalk you'd break the devil's dishes.
- 1:27:39That was a really quite bad way.
- 1:27:42Yeah that was a New York thing for kids.
- 1:27:44Okay bottom of the sixth here's Clemente, Magley's curve is caught on little looper right near the bag at second.
- 1:27:50Magley is there to take it and quickly one out.
- 1:27:53Summers coming in.
- 1:27:59Just thinking about that, thinking about Dodgetown came for boys too, all the fun that youngsters have down there.
- 1:28:05You can drop us a line at 215 Montague Street.
- 1:28:08Boy what a spot for youngsters.
- 1:28:11Frank Thomas the batter has fouled out and hit a home run.
- 1:28:14As Al pointed out he really jolted it, over the scoreboard and over the clock.
- 1:28:19Frank takes a slow curve in for the strike on one.
- 1:28:22Frank has five home runs, 20 runs batted in and an average of 324.
- 1:28:28One out, bottom of the sixth.
- 1:28:304-1 Brooklyn.
- 1:28:32Magley comes back and a curve is grounded wide a third, a nice stab by Charlie Neal who makes his play.
- 1:28:38Charlie not only had to cover ground going to his left but the ball did not come up for him at the last second.
- 1:28:44He really had to short hop it, digging it out of the dirt.
- 1:28:48Two down.
- 1:28:49If you've just joined us and you say is Charlie Neal a third?
- 1:28:52Well that's right, Don Zimmer's a short.
- 1:28:54For Peewee Reese who started the ball game, got a face hit in the fifth inning and pulled a muscle in his leg and had to give way.
- 1:29:01Two out, here's Gene Baker, twice he has grounded out.
- 1:29:04Swings with a high fly ball into left field.
- 1:29:06It's high but not too deep.
- 1:29:08Simoli's there shading his eyes and takes it for the out.
- 1:29:11A rather easy inning for Sal Magley.
- 1:29:13Touch them down one, two, three and at the end of six innings of play Brooklyn four and the Pirates one.
- 1:29:18All right Al, we're waiting now for Catcher Hank Foyle to get his gear on and come on up.
- 1:29:24While we have a chance for us to station identification, this is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 1:29:30Dial 1460WOKO for the Brooklyn Dodger games and write to WOKO for the complete Dodger schedule of games both at home and away.
- 1:29:38It's yours free for the asking.
- 1:29:40Be sure to give your name and address, write baseball, WOKO Albany, New York.
- 1:29:46All right, seventh inning, Charlie Neal the batter.
- 1:29:49Vernon Law spins the pitch and gets it high for one.
- 1:29:52Neal coming up for his first at bat now.
- 1:29:55He's batting 273 as a home run and four runs batted in.
- 1:30:00Law right back again, Charlie checks and the pitch is down low ball two, two and old.
- 1:30:05Charlie Neal followed by Don Zimmer and pitcher Sal Magley.
- 1:30:09We're in the seventh inning, Brooklyn for Pirates one.
- 1:30:13Vernon Law winds and the two-oh pitch, Neal swings and fouls her back two and one.
- 1:30:27Law checking signs.
- 1:30:30Neal just waiting.
- 1:30:34Vernon winds and the two-one pitch to Charlie Neal, cut on and fouled away.
- 1:30:38Two and two.
- 1:30:47Brooklyn with a run in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
- 1:30:51The Pirates run came in a home run by Frank Thomas in the fourth inning.
- 1:30:55Two-two pitch to Charlie Neal, cut on, a bounce there slowly to second.
- 1:30:58Mazurowski up with it, throws to first in time and Neal is retired four to three.
- 1:31:03One up, one away.
- 1:31:05In the second inning we'll see Sandy Koufax and Bob Purkey.
- 1:31:20Don Zimmer has single to right and a scoring fly ball to right, one for one after a get down and away from a high inside fastball, ball one.
- 1:31:29In the second inning, two-thirty-seven, four home runs, eleven runs batted in.
- 1:31:38Law back to him one-oh, Zimmer swings and misses one and one.
- 1:31:44Don using a bit lighter bat now, he had a new set made.
- 1:31:49Bats now weigh around thirty-two, thirty-three ounces.
- 1:31:55In one pitch, slow curve, cut on, is a high fly ball into left center.
- 1:31:59It's an easy play for Burton right there waiting and takes it.
- 1:32:02Two up, two away.
- 1:32:04And we're waiting now for Sal Magley to make his way.
- 1:32:08Sal puts on his helmet, out he comes.
- 1:32:11He sacrificed in the third inning and hit the ball well and lined out to Bob Clemente in right field in the fifth.
- 1:32:17It's a round of applause as he comes up.
- 1:32:22Magley batting one-eleven, one for nine.
- 1:32:38Vernon Law ready and comes to Magley and the pitch is cut on and missed like one.
- 1:32:42When the Pirates bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, they'll have Gene Fries, Bill Burton, and Hank Foyles.
- 1:32:55Law right back again, Magley swings and pops it up.
- 1:32:58Third baseman Gene Fries calling, waiting, takes it.
- 1:33:02So quiet seventh inning for Brooklyn, one-two-three.
- 1:33:06Sure now, the end of six and a half innings to play in this first game of two today, Brooklyn four and the Pirates one.
- 1:33:12And they are standing here at Forbes Field for the bucks when they come up to bat.
- 1:33:16But right now let's all sit quietly and listen to Al.
- 1:33:20Oh, is that Dixieland Jive again, Mr. Sculley?
- 1:33:23Oh, those not links.
- 1:33:24Yes, sir. Take me down to Basin Street and cool me off.
- 1:33:30Boy, I've heard take me out of the ballgame a lot of ways, but I've never heard of Dixieland. It's wake you up.
- 1:33:37It'll do something to you. I don't know what, but it'll do it.
- 1:33:40Well, we find out about the last of the seventh now. Gene Fries the batter, tries to punch in the air, it drops foul on touch, 0-1.
- 1:33:47Gene flying to left and struck out batting 229.
- 1:33:55Now the Washington Senators with their three-game winning streak and their leading four to nothing at the end of five innings got a tough break.
- 1:34:03Fischer out seek out of the Yankees, hit one back and hit pitcher Camellio Pasquale.
- 1:34:11Pasquale had to leave the ballgame, relieved by Buck Byerly in the sixth inning.
- 1:34:16Strike one pitch to Gene Fries, cut out a miss, 0-2.
- 1:34:21And the thought of a pitcher being hit by a batted ball reminds us of the pictures in the newspapers of Herb Scorer being out of the hospital.
- 1:34:28Certainly wish him well. Boy, he must be quite a fella, huh?
- 1:34:320-2 pitch to Gene Fries, cut on and lined down the left of your line, it's starting to hook and go foul.
- 1:34:410-2, the count to Gene Fries.
- 1:34:45They don't expect Herb Scorer to be in uniform for quite a while as yet.
- 1:34:50It'll be another week, 10 days before he'll even try uniform. They don't expect him to pitch for about a month.
- 1:34:56But at least the big fella's out and around.
- 1:35:05Brooklyn four, fire is won, bottom of the seventh inning. Gene Fries, Bill Verdon, Hank Foyles.
- 1:35:12Magli ready in the 0-2 pitch, Fries swings and a bouncing ball, staff backhanded by Maglio throws him out.
- 1:35:18Nice play by Sal, going sharply to his right.
- 1:35:21So Fries retired, 1-3.
- 1:35:26Bill Verdon, the center fielder for Pittsburgh, has bounced out and struck out. Bill's average is really shrinking now, he's down to 2-0-1.
- 1:35:36Bill O'Fienn-Hillier, had a great year last year, much I guess to the embarrassment of the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:35:42A couple getting squared around, he has one of them run 12 RBIs.
- 1:35:48Magli bends at the knees, gets a sign. Now Sal ready and comes to the plate, and the change is just low, ball one.
- 1:35:54Magli giving you the impression he's just pushing it up there.
- 1:35:591-0.
- 1:36:02Sal back again, 1-0. The pitch is grounded right at Gilliam. Jim up with it easily after going on his right knee and throws him out.
- 1:36:09Bill Verdon goes down, 4-3, two up, two away.
- 1:36:15Catcher Hank Foyles bounced out and double sharply to left. Got around as far as third in the fifth inning and that's where he's saved.
- 1:36:23Ruppen leading 4-1 in the seventh inning, two out. Foyles batting 2-71.
- 1:36:36Here he swings and fouls the first pitch back, strike one.
- 1:36:40The up and M shape of Brewing Company of Brooklyn sending you all the proceedings on a big day from Pittsburgh, Memorial Day.
- 1:36:47Second game, Sandy Koufax and Bob Perkey.
- 1:36:50Hope you're just comfortable right now if you don't have to move around too much.
- 1:36:54Strike one, Fitz to Foyles, in there, oh and two.
- 1:36:57And if you're planning to have some Cole Schaeffer to keep you company, and we certainly hope you are,
- 1:37:02hope you have that half court cam where you don't have to keep jumping up and down for a refill.
- 1:37:07Strike two, Fitz, Foyles cuts on it, there's a high fly ball into shallow right.
- 1:37:11Frillo coming over, still over to his left some more now and takes it for the out.
- 1:37:15About 20 feet fair inside the right field foul line.
- 1:37:20So Mr. Sam Magley is starting to get the range now, he's retired nine men in a row since Foyles doubled to open up the fifth.
- 1:37:26And at the end of seven, Brooklyn four and Pittsburgh one.
- 1:37:31It's to the top half of the eighth inning, and the first Brooklyn Dodger up will be Jim Gilliam.
- 1:37:36Score standing, the Dodgers four and the Pittsburgh Pirates one in this first game of the doubleheader from Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.
- 1:37:42Vins already, so let's pick up the action.
- 1:37:45Jim Gilliam, the lead it off, is all for three, fly balls to center and twice to left.
- 1:37:49Junior batting 251, Lars Passball below his knees, ball one.
- 1:37:54This for Big Vernon will probably be his last inning of work.
- 1:37:58He's due up first when the Pirates come to bat in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:38:03Law ready and the one oh pitch.
- 1:38:05Junior takes inside, ball two, two and oh.
- 1:38:07Gene Fries playing on the grass inside third.
- 1:38:11Brooklyn four, Pirates one, we're in the eighth inning.
- 1:38:19Vernon Law winds and the two oh pitch to Gilliam, taken for the strike, two and one.
- 1:38:23Brooklyn up to this moment, four runs on nine hits and no errors.
- 1:38:27The Pirates one run on four hits, no errors.
- 1:38:34Law back again, Gilliam swings and fouls it away, two and two.
- 1:38:39Control has been very good on both sides today.
- 1:38:43Vernon Law has not walked a man, Sal Magley walked one.
- 1:38:50The beauty yesterday, Johnny Padres and Ronnie Klein, Brooklyn won that one nothing.
- 1:39:00Law flicking his glove at foil signs, now he's ready, two, two pitch, cut on is a hot one on a bounce right to Mazuracki, stays with it, makes his play.
- 1:39:08So Gilliam hits the ball sharply but right at the second baseman, one out on the eighth.
- 1:39:15Zeno Somoli with three hits today, three for three, two singles and a double.
- 1:39:20And the present young man from the San Francisco Bay area now has a three fifty three batting average.
- 1:39:32Zeno with that overly close stance, just waiting, Law ready and delivers and Somoli shies away, the pitch is inside, ball one.
- 1:39:44Somoli waiting, now the one oh pitch to Zeno, cut on is a hot one, grabbed nicely by Gene Freeze, his throw to first is in time.
- 1:39:52Oh I guess the scales always balance out, Somoli got a base hit on a little looping fly ball to center in the sixth inning.
- 1:39:58This time he ripped one but right at third baseman Freeze and he goes out.
- 1:40:05Two down in the eighth inning and the batter, Duke Schneider.
- 1:40:08Schneider hit into a double play in the first inning, single to center to drive in Somoli in the fourth and hit a home run to deep right field with Somoli aboard in the sixth.
- 1:40:17Schneider batting two seventy-six.
- 1:40:20Law delivers, Schneider swings a high drive way out into right center field, that's hit a mile, Clementi to the wall and grabs it and that's over four hundred feet away.
- 1:40:29Boy that's a long out.
- 1:40:37So Mr. Dick Schneider who is of a specially happy frame of mind the last few days with his lovely wife Beverly making this little trip with him,
- 1:40:46goes two for three and jolts one to deepest right center that Bob Clementi holds down right at the base of the wall.
- 1:40:52So Brooklyn goes out one, two, three in the eighth and at the end of seven and a half, Brooklyn four, Pittsburgh one.
- 1:40:57Sitting over here visualizing, oh I got an imagination.
- 1:41:04Well Paul Smith coming up now batting for Vernon Law tries to run and fouls the first pitch away on one.
- 1:41:10Paul Smith, SMI-TH, two of the outfielders, left hand batter.
- 1:41:15Hitting for Vernon Law, bottom of the eighth, Brooklyn four, Pirates one.
- 1:41:19Smitty batting two seventy-nine. Magni ready, right back to him with a curve and misses high, one and one.
- 1:41:26Those will be Paul Smith and Bill Maszeroski and Dee Fondy.
- 1:41:32Magni getting a sign from Roy Campanella, foul straightens up, comes to the plate one-one.
- 1:41:37The curve cut on and missed, one and two.
- 1:41:42Smith stumbled and hit his back, spikes caught so plate umpire Frank Sicori polishing off home plate.
- 1:41:57Magni winds and one and two pitch to Paul Smith outside two and two.
- 1:42:02The one-one tie at the end of six innings, the Phillies and the Giants, no score at the end of one inning, the Cubs and Milwaukee.
- 1:42:08McCartnoughs are leading Cincinnati, one to nothing at the end of an inning and a half.
- 1:42:13The American League, Washington leading the Yankees, four nothing at the end of five.
- 1:42:18Magni ready and delivers, Smith swings a hot one to the hole over there as Zimmery's up with it, his long throw in time.
- 1:42:23And Paul Smith is retired, six to three.
- 1:42:27Detroit leading Kansas City, one to nothing at the end of one inning.
- 1:42:30And Baltimore making things rough for the Red Sox, Baltimore five and Boston one at the end of four.
- 1:42:36No report yet, Cleveland and the White Sox.
- 1:42:41Further report at the end of two innings, the Cardinals two, Cincinnati nothing.
- 1:42:45Dodges trailing Cincinnati by a game and a half.
- 1:42:48Bader Maszeroski and Bill takes a pitch down low, ball one.
- 1:42:52Maszeroski batting 200.
- 1:42:56Picey is bounced out and walks.
- 1:43:00Magni comes back one-oh, Maszeroski takes low again, ball two, two and oh.
- 1:43:09Big day of baseball, everybody in the majors playing double-headers,
- 1:43:12so we'll be keeping a close check on all the scorers throughout the afternoon.
- 1:43:19Two and oh pitch to Maszeroski, that's high, ball three, three and oh.
- 1:43:25Walter Austin sitting in front of the Dodgers dugout on the top step right next to the bat rack,
- 1:43:30watching Magni's every move.
- 1:43:35A three and oh pitch to Maszeroski down the pipe, three and one.
- 1:43:51Pitch to the plate in there, full count.
- 1:43:56Three and two to Bill Maszeroski on deck, D'Fondi, one out, bases empty,
- 1:44:00bottom of the eighth inning, Brooklyn four, Pittsburgh one.
- 1:44:05Sal Magni ready in the three-two pitch, curve cut, high fly ball to deep left,
- 1:44:09Simoli going back, away back to the Ivy wall, turns and grabs it, right at the wall.
- 1:44:15And I'll tell you, Simoli had an idea all the way, just kept looking at the wall with his back to home plate,
- 1:44:21then turned at the very fringe of the black dirt track that goes around the ballpark,
- 1:44:26caught it right against the wall, long out.
- 1:44:30Magni gave you the impression that time that he's just not going to walk, Maszeroski,
- 1:44:34he came right in with it, left a little second baseman, hit it just about as far as he could.
- 1:44:38Two out, here's D'Fondi batting three-forty-four, D is two to three.
- 1:44:42Magni's change up is outside for one.
- 1:44:47Fondi twice, single to right and fly to left.
- 1:44:53On Dagbar Clementi, the one-oh pitch to Fondi at the knees for a strike, one and one.
- 1:45:09Magni bends at the waist to get it signed.
- 1:45:11Now the one-one pitch to D'Fondi, cut on is a hot one up the middle at the clean base hit.
- 1:45:16That is the first hit for Pittsburgh.
- 1:45:19The batting foils doubled in the fifth inning. Magni in that time had retired eleven men in a row.
- 1:45:24Now Fondi singles to center with two out and here's Bob Clementi.
- 1:45:30Clementi, quite a favorite here at Pittsburgh.
- 1:45:33He's kind of on the spectacular side.
- 1:45:35On any fly ball, he kind of runs around out there like a kid chasing a bee.
- 1:45:41You get a big kick out of him. With the bat, he's hitting two-eighty.
- 1:45:44Hit back to the box, hit into a forced play and popped up.
- 1:45:50Fondi at first, two out.
- 1:45:52Magni set, comes to the plate and Clementi takes a strike on one.
- 1:45:56The Dodger bullpen, Clem LeVine, begins to loosen up.
- 1:46:01Brooklyn four, Pirates one, bottom of the eighth.
- 1:46:10Magni comes set.
- 1:46:12Now the strike one pitch, Clementi swings right through it, oh and two.
- 1:46:21Clementi turns and serves something to Frank Secori, now gets back in.
- 1:46:31Magni in no hurry, he's waited a long time for this start, he's making the most of it.
- 1:46:38The oh and two pitch to Clementi outside, ball one.
- 1:46:43One and two.
- 1:46:48Magni's last start, twenty days ago on May the 10th, you remember a Friday night against the Giants,
- 1:46:54he pitched four innings, lost to Ruben Gomez, two to one.
- 1:47:00Sal turns on the rubber, takes a peek at first and comes set.
- 1:47:04One and two pitch, breaking ball just outside, Clementi overmined a swing check.
- 1:47:10Two and two.
- 1:47:14Big Frank Thomas on deck.
- 1:47:21Gilliam has over shifted way over to his right, so there's a big gap on the right side of the infield.
- 1:47:34Two and two.
- 1:47:39Magni delivers, Clementi takes outside, ball three, that one's backhanded by Campanella.
- 1:47:45So Magni now, after retiring eleven men in a row, with two out on the eighth inning,
- 1:47:49Fondy singles. He has now gone to a full count on Bob Clementi.
- 1:47:58Clementi gets on, Magni has to face Frank Thomas who hit a home run in the fourth inning.
- 1:48:04Magni's set, three-two-fifth there goes Fondy and it's fouled back.
- 1:48:13Brooklyn, four runs on nine hits. The Pirates, one run on five hits.
- 1:48:20Clementi walks out of the batter's box, wants a towel to dry off his hands.
- 1:48:27It's a pleasant day here in Pittsburgh, blue skies and white clouds.
- 1:48:32The breeze has picked up a bit, blowing from right center, slanting across the left field foul line.
- 1:48:38Clementi might very well have gotten something in his eye.
- 1:48:40Now the on deck hitter, Frank Thomas, takes a towel and kind of looks at the orb.
- 1:48:52O-R-B means eye. Yep.
- 1:48:56All right, Bob's all right. Here he comes. Full count to Bob Clementi.
- 1:49:03Fondy holding on at first, two out on the eighth. Brooklyn, four, Pittsburgh, one.
- 1:49:13Magni, stirred in, Campanella wigwag the sign out to him, Sal's ready.
- 1:49:17Fondy will be going. There he goes, the three-two is caught on his line drive.
- 1:49:21Slicing to right field, that's going to be high and off the screen.
- 1:49:24Fondy is heading for third. Brillo throws in to second.
- 1:49:27Here comes Fondy, comes to the plate and scores on a double by Clementi.
- 1:49:43Bob Clementi sliced a line drive halfway up the screen in right field.
- 1:49:47That cased in Fondy. Clementi sliding into second with his double and it is now
- 1:49:52the fourth inning for the Pirates, two. Still two out on the eighth inning and
- 1:49:57the batter, Frank Thomas.
- 1:49:59So Magni has now given up two runs, six hits and he has the two out blues here
- 1:50:05in the eighth. Smith had bounced out, Majorovski had flied out, then Fondy
- 1:50:09singled and Clementi doubled him in.
- 1:50:11And here's Thomas. Thomas fouled out, hit one over the scoreboard and the clock
- 1:50:16in the fourth inning for his simple run. Last time up bounced out third to first.
- 1:50:21Fondy with the ropes here in the stands waking up and a little hand clapping in
- 1:50:24the background. Magni comes set. Now delivers to Thomas who slings a hot one
- 1:50:30into the hole through for a base hit. Clementi at the round third will score.
- 1:50:34Slowly closing the second and it's getting better.
- 1:50:51So Sal Magni is now in a jam after breezing along through seventh and two
- 1:50:56third innings. With two out on the eighth, gives up a single to Fondy, a double to
- 1:51:00Clementi, a single to Thomas and it is four three Brooklyn. Walter Austin going
- 1:51:05out to the mound as Gene Baker will be the batter. LeBine continues to throw in
- 1:51:10the bullpen and it could be that Magni will be taken out right now. Sal just
- 1:51:14breezing along and Kabloom, the Pirate, starts to whack away at him. Austin looks
- 1:51:19to the bullpen, looks again and says now I want LeBine. So while LeBine comes in
- 1:51:24to relieve Magni, Dodgers leading four to three, closing out, tells us about all
- 1:51:29the other ball games on our shape of scoreboard.
- 1:51:32Alright then, the Philadelphia Giants, their first game of the doubleheader at
- 1:51:35the end of seven innings all tied at one apiece. Simmons for Philadelphia and
- 1:51:40for the Giants it is Ruben Gomez. Boucher and Rogers have each hit home runs in
- 1:51:44that first game. Cincinnati and St. Louis at the end of two and one half innings
- 1:51:49of play. St. Louis two and Cincinnati has one. Joe Nuxall pitching for the
- 1:51:54Cincinnati Reds. Willard Schmitt going for St. Louis. Thurman had a home run in
- 1:51:58the third with the bases empty for Cincinnati. Chicago and Milwaukee at the
- 1:52:03end of an inning and a half, there's no score. It's Blutt going for Chicago and
- 1:52:08thrown for Milwaukee. Round of applause here as Sal Magni comes off the hill.
- 1:52:16Now over in the American League, Yankees in Washington at the end of six innings
- 1:52:19of their first game of the doubleheader. Washington has a total of five runs.
- 1:52:24The Yankees nothing. Elsie got started for the Yankees. Terry came on in the sixth
- 1:52:28inning as well, Terry. And Washington fast well started, was out of there, hit by
- 1:52:32a battered ball and firely relieved in the sixth. Remen a home run in the fifth with
- 1:52:35one on for Washington. It's six of the year. Cleveland and Chicago at the end of
- 1:52:40an inning and a half. It is nothing and nothing. For Cleveland daily, for Chicago
- 1:52:45it is done of it. Baltimore and Boston at the end of four and one half innings of
- 1:52:49play. It is five to one. Baltimore over Boston. Mark Caccarelli for Baltimore.
- 1:52:54Stone started for Boston. Porterfield in the fifth. Cal a home run in the first
- 1:52:58with nobody on. It's fourth of the year for Baltimore. Kansas City, Detroit, their
- 1:53:03first game of a twin bill. At the end of one inning, Detroit leads. Kansas City
- 1:53:07one to nothing. Frank's to Harvey Keene's home run in the first with nobody
- 1:53:10aboard. That's the second of the year. Tommy Morgan going for Kansas City. For
- 1:53:14Detroit it's Duke Monk. Well, that's everything right up to the minute. We have
- 1:53:17some changes here. Let's get back to this. Ray Mejias is a speed merchant down at
- 1:53:21first base running for Frank Thomas. Ray, your left hand batter, Bob Skinner is
- 1:53:25coming up to hit for Gene Baker as Clem LeBine takes over for Magley with two
- 1:53:29outs. And time calls for a moment as Frillo is receiving a ball in right field that
- 1:53:34got away in the Pirate's bullpen where both O'Brien and also Fase are loosening
- 1:53:38up. Buddy Pritchett now loosens up. He's a young shortstop. He'll be taking over
- 1:53:42for Baker. Four-three Brooklyn. Two out on the eighth inning. Mejias at first.
- 1:53:46LeBine in relief of Magley. Bob Skinner batting 314. He has one home run, five
- 1:53:52runs batted in. So what was a pleasant seven and two-third innings for Magley.
- 1:53:58Finally exploded and he had to come out. LeBine comes out, looks to first and
- 1:54:03delivers and the curve is outside, ball one. LeBine has three wins and no defeats
- 1:54:08against the league. He has saved five. He is asked to save a sixth. This is his
- 1:54:1318th appearance this year. Clem LeBine, back of him, Don Vesson in the bullpen.
- 1:54:20LeBine set on the 1-0 pitch. Skinner takes the curve down low ball two, 2-0.
- 1:54:27It's a very quiet beginning of the eighth inning. Smith batted for low and bounced
- 1:54:31out and Majorski flied out. Then Fondy singled the centers. Clemente doubled off
- 1:54:35the screen and right to chase in Fondy. And Thomas singled the left to chase in
- 1:54:40Clemente. So it's Brooklyn four, Pirate three, still two out. LeBine turns and
- 1:54:46throws to first to keep Mejias near the bag.
- 1:54:54LeBine comes set. The 2-0 pitch to Bott Skinner. Curve over for the strike,
- 1:54:592-1. So the elusive final out in the eighth inning has been tough to come by.
- 1:55:06Considering that Magley had not pitched in 20 days, she did surprisingly well
- 1:55:10today. Ran out of gas with two out in the eighth.
- 1:55:16LeBine set. Clem delivers two and one to Skinner. A sinker, cut on and missed,
- 1:55:21two and two.
- 1:55:27Deuces wild with two out and so will the Pirates. They've scored two in the eighth.
- 1:55:31Brooklyn four, Pittsburgh three in the first of two. Sandy Koufax and Bob
- 1:55:36Corky in the second game. LeBine comes set. The 2-2 pitch. Curve ball low,
- 1:55:43ball free. After Skinner comes third baseman, Dean Cleaves.
- 1:55:51Elroy Cleaves going in the Pirate Bowl pen, as we said, best in the Dodger pen.
- 1:55:55LeBine squeezing that ball, trying to age it. Bob Skinner batting for Dean Baker.
- 1:56:07Three and two, two out. Throw to first, Mejias ready to go, has to get back to
- 1:56:12the bag. We'll have a cold shaper and stay right with us. This one's still in the
- 1:56:16air. LeBine set. Mejias goes. The 3-2 is cut on and grounded foul, right by
- 1:56:22first base coach Danny Murtaugh.
- 1:56:34Magley works seven and two third innings, gave up seven hits. He walked just one
- 1:56:39man and struck out two. Mejias at first base is Magley's responsibility. LeBine
- 1:56:48set, takes a peek. Mejias goes. A 3-2 cut on, fouled away again, so the tension
- 1:56:52mounts.
- 1:57:09LeBine looking over at first. Hodges not holding with the left hand batter up
- 1:57:12and with a count three and two. He's directly back of the bag and ready to jump
- 1:57:15back to a normal depth. Big Skinner waiting. Three and two the count. LeBine
- 1:57:22comes set. The 3-2 pitch, Mejias goes. It's cut on, it's a high fly ball to
- 1:57:28right field. Frillo going back to the wall, turns and grabs it. And Adams
- 1:57:34standing here at Forksfield as Bob Skinner flies deep to right and Frillo
- 1:57:39halts it in near the wall. In the eighth inning for Pittsburgh, two runs, all
- 1:57:47with two out on three consecutive hits. A single, a double, and a single. One man
- 1:57:51left off. So at the end of eight innings of play, the score, Brooklyn four, the
- 1:57:58Pirates three. Change for the Pittsburgh Pirates as we go to the top of the ninth
- 1:58:05inning. Frillo will be the first batter. Taking up the changes, they'll get them all
- 1:58:09to it. Well Paul Smith, who batted for Vernon Law, is now in left field. Ray
- 1:58:14Mejias started to go out. He got past the infield and they called him back. So Paul
- 1:58:18Smith remains in the ninth spot in the lineup and in left field. Walter Olson
- 1:58:22going out to check with Frank Secori to see how Bobby Bregan going to play his
- 1:58:26men. Smith of course, having hit for the pitcher, must remain in ninth spot. Buddy
- 1:58:30Pritchard has taken over at short and the pitcher is Elroy Face. Now what Olson
- 1:58:34wants to find out is whether Pritchard will hit after Face or before him. And he
- 1:58:39has found out. It has not been announced over the public address system. We'll
- 1:58:43take a little guess and say that Pritchard will hit in the shortstop spot and
- 1:58:48that Face would hit ahead of him. Maybe we can find out now. Here's the
- 1:58:51announcement. Yes, there it is and we get correctly. First time this year. Face
- 1:58:58will be in the clean up spot, then Pritchard fifth and Smith ninth.
- 1:59:12Carl Furlow, then Gil Hodges and Roy Campanile in the ninth inning, Brooklyn
- 1:59:16four and the Pirates three. Elroy Face delivers and Furlow takes a strike on one.
- 1:59:21Carl batting three twenty-two. So if you're keeping score, your lineup should read
- 1:59:25this way. Mazurowski, Fondy, Clemente, Face, Pritchard, Freese, Verdon, Foyles
- 1:59:30and Smith. For strike one pitch, DeFrillo is cut out and fouled away. Oh and two.
- 1:59:37When the Pirates bat in the bottom of the ninth inning, they're due to send up
- 1:59:42Freese, Verdon and Foyles. So Vernon Law pitched eight innings, gave up four runs,
- 1:59:51nine hits. Did not walk a man, struck out one. Face's replacement comes back oh
- 1:59:59and two and the pitch is cut on as a high fly ball to deep left field. Starting to
- 2:00:03go foul, Paul Smith over in the corner, leans up against the wall and grabs it
- 2:00:06for the out. Paul Smith going beyond the Dodger bullpen, right into the corner, up
- 2:00:12against the base of the bleacher wall to grab it. DeFrillo fouls out to the left
- 2:00:17of the batter, one out. Gil Hodges twice bounced out and single to short. Gil batting
- 2:00:27three thirty-eight.
- 2:00:33Face winds and delivers to Gil who takes his strike on one. The Dodgers saw a face
- 2:00:44the other night in that eleven inning ball game when the Pittsburgh Pirates
- 2:00:47defeated Brooklyn three-two. Face was a winner. It's two and three with the lead.
- 2:00:52Elroy back on one, the pitch cut on and missed oh and two. Big Hodges going all
- 2:00:56the way around. Brooklyn four, Pirates three, ninth inning and the first of two.
- 2:01:08Face winds a strike two pitch. Hodges takes low and outside, ball one. Don Vesson
- 2:01:13continues to fire away in the bullpen in the event that LaFine might stagger,
- 2:01:17pitching to the Pirates in the bottom of the ninth. Face delivers one and two.
- 2:01:24Hodges checks his swing and the curve is low, two and two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:01:40Face getting a sign now from Hank Foyles. Two two-pitch to Hodges, cut on and
- 2:01:44missed strike three.
- 2:01:50It's all face strikes out of man. The Dodgers have gotten on the quiet side as far as
- 2:01:56their bats are concerned. Last nine men have gone out in order since Hodges
- 2:02:01singled in the sixth. Campanella hit into a double play and then one two three.
- 2:02:06So with two out on the ninth inning, Brooklyn leading four to three. The batter is Roy
- 2:02:10Campanella. He struck out, doubled, hit into the double play. Campy batting two forty-five.
- 2:02:17Face delivers, curve low, ball one. So there'll be a lot of noise in the bottom of the
- 2:02:23ninth so get your cold shaker, stay comfortable if you can and we'll find out about this one.
- 2:02:30The one-oh pitch to Campanella. Curve cut on and bounce down to Majaroski. He's up with it
- 2:02:34cleanly, turns and makes his play.
- 2:02:38Okay the last ten Dodgers in a row have gone out. The end of eight and a half innings.
- 2:02:42Brooklyn four, Pirates three. We'll find out about Mrs. Fries, Ferdinand Foyles in just a minute or so.
- 2:02:48But right now let's see what Al has on his mind.
- 2:02:51There'll be a ball game going here too huh? Last half of the ninth inning. Ben, you all ready?
- 2:02:57Well we'll see now. Brooklyn four and the Pirates three. Clem LaFide who has not been
- 2:03:02feeling too well of late has a big assignment now to keep the Pirates quiet in the bottom of the ninth
- 2:03:07inning trying to save this one for Sal Magley who pushed very well for seven and two third innings
- 2:03:12and then ran out of gas. Magley allowed three runs and seven hits, walk one and struck out two.
- 2:03:17LaFide had to get the last out in the eighth inning and is now taking dead aim on the ninth.
- 2:03:22He'll be pitching to Gene Fries, then Bill Burton and the catcher Hank Foyles.
- 2:03:27Fries has flied to left, struck out and hit back to the box. Gene batting two, twenty-five.
- 2:03:33Okay the last of the ninth is here. Four three Brooklyn.
- 2:03:38LaFide goes to his wind up now. Fries waiting. The first pitch is sinkered down low, ball one.
- 2:03:44And this crowd which had to more or less sit quietly through seven innings really had something to cheer
- 2:03:49about on the eighth and they're not kind of quiet in anticipation here on the ninth.
- 2:03:54The one-one pitch to Gene Fries. Curveball in for the strike, one and one.
- 2:03:59This is the first of two. The second game it will be Sandy Koufax pitted against Bob Perkey.
- 2:04:09The outfield swung around towards left. Charlie Neal is up a step, just about even with the bag at third.
- 2:04:15The one-one pitch to Fries. Fastball a line drive at Hodges.
- 2:04:20Fries at the line drive right at Hodges left hip. Gill just snares it for the out, one down.
- 2:04:30That brings up center fielder Bill Verton who has bounced out second to first, struck out and bounced out again.
- 2:04:37Bill batting two hundred.
- 2:04:40The fine wines comes to the plate. Sinker cut on and fouled away.
- 2:04:48Oh and one.
- 2:04:51Jay Fribeard delighted to send you all the excitement from Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.
- 2:04:55Brooklyn for Pittsburgh three.
- 2:04:58Third tenth meeting of the year.
- 2:05:00For Dodgers having taken five of nine.
