Latest / OneLegUpAlex Media / ONELEGUPALEX MEDIA TALKS PATRICK ROY FIRING WITH LOU TERMINELLO AND RYAN PAGANO (recorded 4-6-26)
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Well, we've planned an emergency meeting at one
- 0:02Speaker 1: leg of Alex Media. It should have happened yesterday, but
- 0:04Speaker 1: as you guys know, I was at Yankee Stadium yesterday
- 0:07Speaker 1: in during a four hour ring delay on Easter that
- 0:10Speaker 1: was something else. I got Ryan here, who did a
- 0:12Speaker 1: podcast on this yesterday. I've got lou Terminello, who's chomping
- 0:15Speaker 1: at the bit. Firstly, boys, I mean, Chris Jury is
- 0:19Speaker 1: still the GM of the of the Rangers and Patrick
- 0:22Speaker 1: gag got fired faster than Dury's got fired. I think
- 0:26Speaker 1: that's a statement that the Islanders are making that they're
- 0:28Speaker 1: in it to win it, maybe not this year, but
- 0:30Speaker 1: in the future.
- 0:30Speaker 2: With Pete de Bourg. What do you guys think?
- 0:33Speaker 3: Oh, Alex, thanks for having me. Ryan, how you doing.
- 0:37Speaker 3: I totally agree as far as that though he saw
- 0:41Speaker 3: that the season was slipping away on the Islanders. Yes,
- 0:46Speaker 3: throwing into the season, they were not supposed to be
- 0:49Speaker 3: anywhere near a playoff spot, but Matthew Darts at the
- 0:53Speaker 3: trade deadline said I want to make the playoffs this
- 0:56Speaker 3: year and now, for the first time really since December
- 1:01Speaker 3: fourth or ninth, whatever it was, I think they're out
- 1:04Speaker 3: of a playoff spot. I think they were out for
- 1:06Speaker 3: a day last week. But Alex, we talked about it
- 1:11Speaker 3: off the air last week that we didn't know if
- 1:14Speaker 3: Patrick Waha was going to be the head coach next year.
- 1:18Speaker 3: But I was surprised he wasn't hired by Darsh. Darsh
- 1:23Speaker 3: probably wanted his own higher. I mean, if you watch
- 1:26Speaker 3: the games in the last couple of weeks, especially Friday
- 1:30Speaker 3: and Saturday night, no show, especially in the first period
- 1:34Speaker 3: on Friday against the Flyers. And the only thing that
- 1:38Speaker 3: made the score respectable on a Saturday night when they
- 1:41Speaker 3: were out played by Miles was sobroken standing on his head.
- 1:46Speaker 3: That's why it was four to three instead of ten
- 1:47Speaker 3: to three. They didn't get their tenth shot in the
- 1:50Speaker 3: game until six minutes to go in the game.
- 1:52Speaker 4: The Islanders did.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So and they were starting to tune them out. It's unbelievable,
- 1:59Speaker 3: but they were. And they had some injuries. The one
- 2:01Speaker 3: injury that they miss that happened in the last two weeks.
- 2:04Speaker 3: And you know, you think, when the Island has brought
- 2:06Speaker 3: this guy back for one year deal, they missed Tony DeAngelo,
- 2:11Speaker 3: and in these last two weeks they really do. The
- 2:15Speaker 3: boor has gone to the finals a couple of times.
- 2:17Speaker 3: He's a different type of coach. He's not as free
- 2:20Speaker 3: wheeling they'll have.
- 2:22Speaker 4: He'll be.
- 2:24Speaker 3: More of a defensive structure type of a coach, which
- 2:27Speaker 3: is good for Sorokin. But I don't know if with
- 2:30Speaker 3: four games are going the season, if it's gonna make
- 2:31Speaker 3: a difference.
- 2:33Speaker 5: It's really anybody's guests at this point, Louis, and it's
- 2:36Speaker 5: going to be on with you once again as well
- 2:38Speaker 5: as you Alex.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Just a crazy.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Time Ales station, really, and this by far might be
- 2:46Speaker 5: the most divided that I've ever seen this fan base
- 2:49Speaker 5: over any given move. And I recall just how united
- 2:53Speaker 5: the fan base was back when they can Barry Trotz
- 2:57Speaker 5: after the twenty one to twenty two season, with everybody
- 2:59Speaker 5: agreeing that, oh this was terrible, how could you let
- 3:02Speaker 5: go a Barie like that? And then next thing you know,
- 3:05Speaker 5: here you are a couple of years later, your next
- 3:08Speaker 5: guy that you bring on that has been to the
- 3:10Speaker 5: Stanley Cup finals before as a head coach, and people
- 3:13Speaker 5: are just so divided about him.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Now.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Yes, what I will say about Peter Debor, he can't
- 3:20Speaker 5: bring you the structure, There's no question about it. He's
- 3:22Speaker 5: only done it everywhere he's been, including his most recent
- 3:24Speaker 5: stop with the Dallas Stars. We saw how much success
- 3:27Speaker 5: he had over there. But then it also just goes
- 3:32Speaker 5: back to what I've said in the past about the
- 3:34Speaker 5: coach is that he can get you to the playoffs.
- 3:37Speaker 5: If you need a short term jolt, he can get
- 3:40Speaker 5: you there. There's no question about it. I just have
- 3:42Speaker 5: questions about whether or not if he is going to
- 3:44Speaker 5: be the long term solution, which it looks like he
- 3:47Speaker 5: is as he's under contract until the twenty twenty nine
- 3:51Speaker 5: to thirty season, and that includes the last four games
- 3:54Speaker 5: of this season. That I've had questions as far as
- 3:57Speaker 5: whether or not he will be able to get this
- 4:00Speaker 5: team in the future when they're ready to the Stanley
- 4:03Speaker 5: Cup Finals.
- 4:04Speaker 2: That's what I have questions on.
- 4:06Speaker 5: But all in all, is it a smart move for
- 4:09Speaker 5: Matthew dersherp first time GM to make absolutely yeah Nooters
- 4:17Speaker 5: in the offseason anyway, he was probably gonna have at
- 4:19Speaker 5: least five or six teams interested in him, and the
- 4:22Speaker 5: Isles just wanted to pre empt all that, especially for
- 4:25Speaker 5: a guy that probably wasn't coming back next season anyway.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Like Loum I was at the game Friday Friday night,
- 4:32Speaker 5: everybody was getting frustrated with Patrick while there was even
- 4:35Speaker 5: this guy maybe about two rows up, and I was
- 4:39Speaker 5: saying to him, like, listen, after the loss, they don't
- 4:42Speaker 5: make the playoffs was a goner, no question about it.
- 4:44Speaker 5: But even then I had some doubts about whether or not,
- 4:48Speaker 5: even if they made the first round that he would
- 4:52Speaker 5: be there. So I don't blame the Aisles for wanting
- 4:55Speaker 5: to just preempt that. Could they have done will a
- 4:59Speaker 5: little bit better if they knew they weren't going to
- 5:01Speaker 5: bring it back anyway?
- 5:02Speaker 2: For sure?
- 5:03Speaker 5: And I was really hoping that and he would have
- 5:05Speaker 5: been the one to do well here.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And it's funny if you listen back.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I was kind of saying how everybody was criticizing the
- 5:12Speaker 1: team for not looking sharp on Friday night against the Flyers,
- 5:15Speaker 1: and I said to Lou, if you remember, Lou, I said,
- 5:18Speaker 1: couldn't you blame law for that? And I think maybe
- 5:20Speaker 1: the Islanders not if they listened to us, but maybe
- 5:22Speaker 1: they picked up on a deal. Maybe that is Wat's fault,
- 5:25Speaker 1: but they're not looking sharp here down the stretch in
- 5:27Speaker 1: a critical playoff run with Maddy Shaeffer.
- 5:29Speaker 5: And look, he even made a calculated risk Friday night
- 5:32Speaker 5: in his postgame press conference that he took some of
- 5:35Speaker 5: the blame to the guys he did not being ready
- 5:38Speaker 5: knowing that this would either make or break his chances
- 5:42Speaker 5: of staying long term. But we know now it didn't
- 5:45Speaker 5: work out. Quite the opposite approach to Lane. Lambert actually
- 5:49Speaker 5: in his final game as an Isle as Isle's head coach,
- 5:53Speaker 5: which was an overtime life if I recall to the
- 5:56Speaker 5: Blackhawks in Chicago and Lane, he took the opposite approach.
- 6:00Speaker 5: He vaulted his roster for really putting them in that
- 6:04Speaker 5: spot in the first place. That obviously did not work.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Now you're seeing two years later, Lambert's successor trying to
- 6:10Speaker 5: take the same approach when he knows his job is
- 6:14Speaker 5: on the line and that of course not working out
- 6:18Speaker 5: either and well to the same could happen to Peter
- 6:23Speaker 5: Devor if maybe he doesn't pan out here.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Who knows, But now again there's a.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Yes, you're absolutely right again when they fired Lambert, who
- 6:32Speaker 3: deserved to be fired. The only reason they made the playoffs.
- 6:35Speaker 3: He has to lost in the first round walk got
- 6:38Speaker 3: them into the playoffs. He definitely if they make that
- 6:41Speaker 3: coaching change they weren't going to get into the playoffs.
- 6:44Speaker 3: But even in Gas press conference, not only the recent ones,
- 6:50Speaker 3: but during the season when and I watched almost every
- 6:52Speaker 3: press postgame press conference, I expected.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Him to be full fire.
- 6:58Speaker 3: And brimstone, and he wasn't. Well right, like, didn't when
- 7:05Speaker 3: he was in Colorado. Didn't he throw the bench onto
- 7:07Speaker 3: the ice?
- 7:09Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 7:09Speaker 3: Oh yeah, but we never saw that Patrick why here.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Maybe he didn't do that because he was afraid that
- 7:17Speaker 3: being such a hothead would not get him a coaching job.
- 7:22Speaker 3: But I thought I would seem more of almost like
- 7:28Speaker 3: a Tortorella type of guy at times. And I don't
- 7:31Speaker 3: think we ever saw that. Well, now we didn't. Now
- 7:33Speaker 3: I never saw them practice behind closed doors, but it
- 7:37Speaker 3: definitely looked like these last ten games. Either A the
- 7:40Speaker 3: Islanders players at the wall, that's why they were tuning
- 7:43Speaker 3: him out.
- 7:47Speaker 4: And maybe they're just not good enough.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Yes, they need another defenseman that could uh, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 3: carry the puck at his zone and help a breakouts.
- 7:56Speaker 3: There were times on Saturday Night, I mean, they didn't
- 8:00Speaker 3: have to look like they were going to get past
- 8:02Speaker 3: the their own blue line. Their breakout plays were just terrible.
- 8:06Speaker 3: They it was they never had the punk, they never
- 8:10Speaker 3: had the puck.
- 8:13Speaker 5: And the indictment though, if you're trying to put forth
- 8:17Speaker 5: a system focused on controlling the puck in your own
- 8:21Speaker 5: zone and really just having a wide open type of
- 8:25Speaker 5: system with not really that much structure, now that's a
- 8:28Speaker 5: huge indictment. And look, I get it, you're playing the
- 8:30Speaker 5: Carolina Hurricanes, best team in the metro by far.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Huh.
- 8:35Speaker 5: I get that, But especially since you have to lead
- 8:38Speaker 5: multiple times, you'd think that, especially in a crucial game
- 8:42Speaker 5: that they needed needed to win, that this could be
- 8:47Speaker 5: the one game where they come out on top against
- 8:50Speaker 5: a very good team.
- 8:51Speaker 2: And yet that just didn't happen.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Now I know, it's also pretty easy to say, well,
- 8:58Speaker 5: the roster that coach wab was given by the first
- 9:00Speaker 5: time GM in Matthew Dorsh was not a good roster
- 9:04Speaker 5: at all.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Well, he's Ryan. There's some players on this team that
- 9:11Speaker 3: he inherited. Uh, like the anting Anton Douclaies of the world.
- 9:17Speaker 4: You know who.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Lamarello gave a four year deal. The Islanders are gonna
- 9:20Speaker 3: have to eat that contract or somebody if they could
- 9:25Speaker 3: dump him somewhere to some team, maybe take half of
- 9:28Speaker 3: his salary or something like that.
- 9:30Speaker 4: But he's been you know, he's been nowhere.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yes, he had that one good stretch when he scored
- 9:35Speaker 3: those eight goals in eight games or nine games, but
- 9:38Speaker 3: he has been inconsistent. Is this is this the end
- 9:42Speaker 3: for Scott Mayfield? Yes, he has time left on his deal,
- 9:45Speaker 3: but I don't know if he's in where the islands,
- 9:50Speaker 3: if they want to get to that next level, if
- 9:52Speaker 3: he if he's gonna be a part of it, what
- 9:55Speaker 3: are you gonna do with what? And anders league free agent?
- 10:00Speaker 3: Of course let them go. I probably would, or maybe
- 10:05Speaker 3: give him a one year deal or two year deal,
- 10:07Speaker 3: depending what. Boy he's gonna be thirty five years old.
- 10:12Speaker 3: They gotta and they got it. I know we've said
- 10:15Speaker 3: this for the last seven or eight years, even when
- 10:19Speaker 3: they got to back to back conference final final fours.
- 10:24Speaker 4: They got to improve the power play.
- 10:26Speaker 3: It is mind boggling that they're so inept on the
- 10:30Speaker 3: power play, gets so few chances on the power play.
- 10:34Speaker 3: It is mind boggling. And that's Ray Benett is the
- 10:38Speaker 3: power play coach. Correct they fired Scott Gomes was the
- 10:44Speaker 3: power play coach. They've tried so many power play coaches.
- 10:47Speaker 3: They've tried so many different players on the power play,
- 10:50Speaker 3: and they can't get this right, that they're always at
- 10:53Speaker 3: the bottom of the league in power play last year
- 10:56Speaker 3: thirty one. This year they gotta be around thirty thirty
- 10:58Speaker 3: one again.
- 11:01Speaker 5: And I mean the fact that this is even a
- 11:02Speaker 5: problem during the Trotz years too, yeah enough, where it
- 11:06Speaker 5: was to a point where any time they went to
- 11:08Speaker 5: the power play you just expecting nothing for a good
- 11:11Speaker 5: hole two minutes. So yes, it is very easy to
- 11:14Speaker 5: fault Darst there. And I'm not faulting him. I'm not
- 11:16Speaker 5: gonna fault him for his mid season moves because at
- 11:19Speaker 5: the time I thought they were good moves.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I'm not faulting on a midas move.
- 11:24Speaker 5: They out in the right way in the In hindsight, though,
- 11:28Speaker 5: it definitely would have been much better, knowing what we
- 11:31Speaker 5: know now if they just stayed put, because yeah, they're
- 11:35Speaker 5: still gonna have some flexibility in the off season. But
- 11:38Speaker 5: now you got a lot more money tied up to
- 11:40Speaker 5: Andre Pillott, Now you got a lot more money tied
- 11:43Speaker 5: up to Carson Sussi. So really, the big question that
- 11:45Speaker 5: I guess Aisles fans are really trying to answer is
- 11:48Speaker 5: whether or not this is more of an indictment on
- 11:51Speaker 5: the GM who constructed this or rather reconstructed this roster
- 11:54Speaker 5: for quote Wah, or if it's solely on the coach
- 11:58Speaker 5: who just seeming he cannot get the guys going, and
- 12:02Speaker 5: especially as of late with the season high four game skid.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Just look dead on the ice.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Look dead.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I mean, they're just playing like they have no heart
- 12:14Speaker 2: out there.
- 12:15Speaker 5: And would say earlier Lou with the thought that at
- 12:19Speaker 5: least when Patrick Wah had come in here, that maybe
- 12:22Speaker 5: he could be sort of the Tortorella and or Mike
- 12:25Speaker 5: keenan archetype of being able to fire your guys up
- 12:29Speaker 5: no matter what the situation and play every game with
- 12:33Speaker 5: as much hard as possible. But and you know, we
- 12:35Speaker 5: saw that for a bit. We saw with his first
- 12:38Speaker 5: few practices with the Islanders just how fired up he
- 12:40Speaker 5: was getting the guys.
- 12:41Speaker 2: But that just hasn't happened since.
- 12:45Speaker 3: No. I mean, like I said, I expected to see
- 12:47Speaker 3: more morse foks on a from the bench. He didn't
- 12:52Speaker 3: even throw a water bottle out there, and is coaching
- 12:55Speaker 3: he's coaching days with the Islanders.
- 12:58Speaker 5: Miko rant after his hit ending Alex Romanov's regular season.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I'll get you that, but when that's really the one.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Highlight, if you will, I'm sorry that doesn't really say
- 13:10Speaker 5: all that.
- 13:10Speaker 3: No, no, no, And let's face it, they miss Romanov, oh.
- 13:15Speaker 2: No question. They have greatly missed his presence.
- 13:18Speaker 5: And you could say what you want about him not
- 13:20Speaker 5: performing to the expectations of his big contract even before
- 13:24Speaker 5: the injury, but he.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Was going to pick it up one way or another.
- 13:27Speaker 5: I think absolutely everybody had more or less expected and
- 13:33Speaker 5: I don't know they could have used him right now.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Really the same with Kyle Polmerry.
- 13:36Speaker 5: I'm sure they're definitely missing his presence and we're right
- 13:40Speaker 5: about now, especially as they continue to shake up the
- 13:42Speaker 5: forward combinations and hope that eventually something will click.
- 13:49Speaker 4: And Paul Mary has time left on his deal.
- 13:51Speaker 3: I mean, Romanov's just beginning his long deal eight years
- 13:56Speaker 3: and uh but again not having them hurt. But just
- 14:02Speaker 3: like you said, the only guy who showed hard the
- 14:04Speaker 3: other night, and I think he's a little tired and fatigued.
- 14:08Speaker 3: You know, when the Islands took the Goaliet, when the
- 14:10Speaker 3: Islanders pulls the rocan with eight minutes to go, and
- 14:14Speaker 3: Schaeffer incredibly kept three three pucks out of the empty net.
- 14:20Speaker 4: He was that kid, wasn't given up.
- 14:23Speaker 3: But.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Wasn't good enough. Obviously terrible, So we'll see what happens.
- 14:28Speaker 3: I think they got to win all four games, or
- 14:30Speaker 3: get seven points out of a possible eight and just
- 14:33Speaker 3: hope for the best. But Ottawa beating Carolina yesterday at home,
- 14:37Speaker 3: which I didn't think was gonna happen because Ia was
- 14:41Speaker 3: really banged up, and the Flyers beating the Bruins in overtime.
- 14:48Speaker 3: The Flyers are playing very well, they really are, and.
- 14:52Speaker 4: They might they they might be in.
- 14:54Speaker 3: It looked like three weeks ago they had no shot,
- 14:57Speaker 3: and it looks like they might be in. So so we'll see.
- 15:02Speaker 4: You know, you turn the page, new coach. I didn't.
- 15:07Speaker 4: We didn't hope. We hope that we weren't gonna need
- 15:09Speaker 4: one at the stage. But that's the way it goes.
- 15:12Speaker 2: The Boor is.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Everybody loves the Boor.
- 15:14Speaker 3: I have never heard anybody say a negative thing about
- 15:19Speaker 3: Pete de Bori's coaching style. Never and uh when he
- 15:24Speaker 3: got to the finals with the Devils in twenty twelve,
- 15:26Speaker 3: I actually thought they were going to beat the Kings,
- 15:28Speaker 3: and they lost those first two overtime games at Prudential center.
- 15:32Speaker 4: And that that's all she wrote.
- 15:34Speaker 3: But hey, if we can get to the Sailing Cup finals,
- 15:38Speaker 3: if he could take advantage of some of the young
- 15:40Speaker 3: players were coming up. I you know, I don't know
- 15:42Speaker 3: how far Eisaman is away and actions Can is away
- 15:46Speaker 3: and ekln is but God, just gotta see what happens
- 15:52Speaker 3: and see what kind of moves they make in the offseason.
- 15:54Speaker 4: By the way, guys, this is this on July first.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Free agent. Friend, there's not There's not a.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Lot of of appealing players out there. I think it's
- 16:07Speaker 3: if you want to get somebody, and I assume Austin
- 16:09Speaker 3: Matthews will be out there, and I don't know if
- 16:11Speaker 3: the Islands would be in an Austin Matthews race if
- 16:15Speaker 3: he if the may Police.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Put him out there for trade.
- 16:18Speaker 3: There's not much out there this offseason, so a lot
- 16:21Speaker 3: of these teams are gonna be stuck with what they have.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Well, we'll have to see.
- 16:25Speaker 1: All I know is Pete de Boor, you know, change
- 16:29Speaker 1: the Devil's organization and he changed the Stars. I think
- 16:31Speaker 1: he can do it here and boil Boy Matt Maddy Schaeffer.
- 16:34Speaker 1: But I bring you guys on to talk about it
- 16:36Speaker 1: because you guys seem to follow this team every night and.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Just amazing.
- 16:41Speaker 1: We talk about the Flyer game on Friday. Now he's gone,
- 16:43Speaker 1: so we'll see what happens. But LOO appreciate your quick
- 16:46Speaker 1: take today on the firing of of WI. I think
- 16:49Speaker 1: we were all stunned getting the news and and you
- 16:52Speaker 1: guys are gonna break it down for us a one
- 16:53Speaker 1: leg of alex Media today
- 16:56Speaker 4: That you gentlemen, I appreciate it.
