- 0:04Welcome back to the USA Cabinet Store Remodeling
- 0:07Podcast. I'm Chris and today we are taking on
- 0:12frameless cabinets. You will also hear them called
- 0:15full access or European. Jessica, I want to start
- 0:20somewhere slightly unusual because almost every
- 0:23article written about this argues about storage
- 0:26and you told me that is the wrong argument. It
- 0:29is the wrong argument, and I will give you the
- 0:31whole answer before we even get into it. What
- 0:34you gain with Frameless is access. On a base
- 0:37cabinet, you get roughly an inch and a half to
- 0:39an inch and three quarters more opening, and
- 0:42you can run a drawer up to 36 inches wide with
- 0:44no center style down the middle of it. What you
- 0:48give up is about 8 to 15 percent on the price
- 0:50of the boxes, any possibility of inset doors,
- 0:54and three smaller things nobody raises in a showroom.
- 0:57But the thing that actually decides whether Frameless
- 1:00works for you is your walls. Okay, we are absolutely
- 1:03coming back to the walls. But first, why is the
- 1:06storage argument bad? That is the wholesale pitch
- 1:09for Frameless. Because the published numbers
- 1:11do not agree with each other, and not by a little.
- 1:15Mainline Kitchen Design does the math and gets
- 1:17about 8 % more per drawer. But no more than 4
- 1:20% across a whole kitchen, because your wall cabinets
- 1:23lose nothing to a face frame. Then you have KCMA.
- 1:27The Trade Association, saying frameless gives
- 1:30you about 20 % more storage. 4 % against 20%.
- 1:35Same question, five times apart. So somebody's
- 1:39wrong. Nobody is lying, actually. They are measuring
- 1:42different things and both calling it storage.
- 1:45Mainline is computing volume across the whole
- 1:47kitchen, where the uppers drag the average down.
- 1:50KCMA looks like it is describing the opening
- 1:53at the face of a base cabinet, where the loss
- 1:55is real and large. And here is the part I would
- 1:58want a listener to hold on to. KCMA does not
- 2:01publish a method for that 20%. So if a salesperson
- 2:05quotes you one confident number, they have read
- 2:08one page. Then what is the honest version of
- 2:10the benefit? Because there clearly is one. The
- 2:13honest version is not a percentage at all. It
- 2:16is that a frameless cabinet takes a drawer or
- 2:18a rollout pantry up to 36 inches wide with no
- 2:21center partition. On framed construction, you
- 2:25generally need a center style past about 24 inches,
- 2:29and that style sits right in the middle of the
- 2:31opening. That is not cubic inches. That is whether
- 2:35a sheet pan goes in flat, whether your stand
- 2:37mixer comes out without turning it sideways,
- 2:40and whether a pantry pullout is one usable bin
- 2:43or two narrow ones. All right, the walls. Explain
- 2:45why that is the real decision. Think of a face
- 2:48frame as a tolerance budget. It gives every single
- 2:51door its own local reference, and it lets an
- 2:54installer hide a wall that is out of plumb behind
- 2:56a style. Frameless spends that budget on access
- 2:59instead. So in a new build on square walls, you
- 3:03get the access essentially for free. In a 1920s
- 3:07row house, you are now asking somebody to hit
- 3:09a tolerance that the industry standard actually
- 3:11publishes a number for. And KCMA says it outright.
- 3:16that frameless leaves very little tolerance for
- 3:18uneven walls, floors, or cabinet alignment. There
- 3:21is a published number for this? Give me the number.
- 3:24There is. The Finnish Carpentry Standard, ANSI
- 3:28AWI 0620, says cabinets shall be installed plumb
- 3:32and level within an eighth of an inch over eight
- 3:34feet of run. It caps a frameless reveal, that
- 3:38gap you see between the doors, at about an eighth
- 3:40of an inch. And then a blum hinge gives you plus
- 3:44or minus two millimeters of side adjustment afterwards
- 3:46to fix things. Now put those together. The hinge
- 3:50can absorb a normal reveal error. What it cannot
- 3:53absorb is a box that went in racked. Define racked
- 3:56for somebody who has never installed a cabinet.
- 3:58A cabinet screwed tight to a wall that bows will
- 4:01twist to follow that wall. Once the box is twisted,
- 4:04its face is not in one plane anymore, and no
- 4:07amount of hinge adjustment brings the door line
- 4:08back. That is the entire frameless installation
- 4:12argument in one sentence. And there is a hard
- 4:15limit on how much you can cheat it. Because the
- 4:18partitions have to stay parallel to the sidewalls.
- 4:20Or your drawer slides stop working. You can fudge
- 4:24a door. You cannot fudge a drawer slide. So frameless
- 4:28is harder to install. That is the takeaway. Actually,
- 4:31I would put it differently. And this came from
- 4:33an installer who does this for a living. Frameless
- 4:36is not harder to install. It is harder to install
- 4:39badly. With a face frame and overlay doors, you
- 4:42have infinite vertical adjustment. So somebody
- 4:45rushing can hang 25 cabinets in a day and nobody
- 4:48sees it. Try that with Frameless and the doors
- 4:51are all over the place. If your installer is
- 4:54good, Frameless takes a variable away. If your
- 4:58installer is cheap, Frameless finds out. That
- 5:01is a great line. So what do you ask the person
- 5:03bidding the job? Two questions. How many frameless
- 5:07kitchens have you installed and do you hang them
- 5:09off a leveled rail? Somebody who has done it
- 5:12answers instantly and then starts telling you
- 5:15about your floor. Somebody who has not will talk
- 5:17about your walls. And one more rule for older
- 5:20houses. Never run a cabinet tight to the ceiling.
- 5:24Leave a crown or a filler that can be scribed
- 5:27because ceilings are not level and there is nothing
- 5:29to trim off a frameless box. You mentioned three
- 5:32things nobody raises in a showroom. What are
- 5:35those? First, the front edge you see between
- 5:37the doors is the box, not a finished frame. It
- 5:40is the edge banding, in whatever color the interior
- 5:43is. So if you pick a dark door on a line with
- 5:46a white interior, you get a pale line around
- 5:48every opening. Not a defect. Plenty of people
- 5:52like the contrast. But it is a design decision
- 5:55a spec sheet is making for you. Second, crown
- 5:58molding and under cabinet lighting need something
- 6:00to land on. And with no face frame, that means
- 6:03build up strips and light rails. Those are a
- 6:06line on your quote, and they are exactly the
- 6:08kind of item that gets cut from a bid and argued
- 6:10about later. Third, that banded edge is what
- 6:13takes the knocks a solid wood frame would otherwise
- 6:16absorb. None of which sounds fatal. None of it
- 6:18is. It is the difference between choosing frameless
- 6:21with your eyes open and finding out in month
- 6:24two. Ask to see your door color against your
- 6:27box color on a display. Get the trim and the
- 6:30lighting itemized, and look at what the front
- 6:32edge of that box is actually made of. Last thing,
- 6:36if somebody is shopping two frameless lines,
- 6:37what separates them? Usually the box and the
- 6:40back panel is the line worth reading twice. Take
- 6:43Fabuwood, who we deal with. Illume uses 3 quarter
- 6:46inch engineered furniture board with a quarter
- 6:48inch back. Ovella, which launched in November
- 6:51of 2025, uses 3 quarter inch plywood with a half
- 6:55inch back that is grooved into the side panels.
- 6:58Now remember what we said goes wrong with frameless.
- 7:01Racking. A half inch back grooved into the sides
- 7:04braces against that far better than a quarter
- 7:07inch back set into rails. That is a real reason
- 7:10to spend up. Especially in an older house. And
- 7:13especially if you are not certain about your
- 7:15installer. And if somebody wants inset doors?
- 7:17Then this is the wrong construction. And I want
- 7:20to be precise about why. Because we corrected
- 7:23ourselves on this. It is not that frameless inset
- 7:26is impossible. Bloom catalogs inset hinges for
- 7:30frameless boxes, and the European 32mm system
- 7:34publishes an inset dimension, so it was designed
- 7:36for it. Custom shops build it. What is true is
- 7:40a fact about the market, not about physics. Every
- 7:43semi -custom frameless line we could find is
- 7:45full overlay only, ours included. So wanting
- 7:49inset means choosing a face frame, or choosing
- 7:51a custom shop. Perfect place to stop. If you
- 7:55want the full version of this, with the standards,
- 7:57the numbers, and the sources, it is written up
- 7:59at isaacabinets .com. Or bring your measurements
- 8:03and the age of your house into any of our showrooms,
- 8:06and we will tell you honestly whether we would
- 8:07put Frameless in it. Jessica, thank you. Anytime.
- 8:12And genuinely, go put a level on the wall before
- 8:14you fall in love with a door.
