While the nation braces for the big two-fifty, Vermont and Northern New York are keeping it real with a thriving local bar scene—breweries, distilleries, and wineries that’ve been brewing culture since before Prohibition. Vermont actually banned alcohol statewide back in 1853, so much so that the governor lost reelection over it. Towns voted on booze, creating chaos until the 1900s. When federal Prohibition hit, smuggling exploded—booze flowed through Smugglers Notch caves and Lake Champlain boats, prompting the creation of the Lake Champlain Boat Patrol in 1924 to stop the flow.
