- 2:06Welcome. The wise, the wonderful Miss
- 2:07Rachel, Andrews Rachel. How are you doing?
- 2:10I'm doing good. Thank you.
- 2:12You sound a little tired, a little bit.
- 2:15Yeah baby girl was up too much last night.
- 2:18Yeah, you have all the excuse in the world, trust me.
- 2:21This is full of coffee. So like the whole thing.
- 2:24Yeah, you know, as a mom of two which will learn more about
- 2:28that, Rachel you'd be excused to have other things in Coffee as
- 2:31well. So just, you know, you get all
- 2:34the grace that this early, you know, I think there's studies
- 2:38that show. It's good for the, I don't know.
- 2:40Yeah, I don't know, maybe that's what happened to my kids.
- 2:42I'm not sure. Well, Rachel thanks for joining
- 2:46us, you know, you are a really great Twitter follow.
- 2:50And what I mean by that is, you know, I live my life on Twitter.
- 2:54So everything you know I do and consume and everything is on
- 2:58Twitter. Enjoyed following, you over the
- 3:00last A couple of years here because you're really open and
- 3:04authentic and I think we'll find more of that in today's episode
- 3:07with you here as well. But you show a different side of
- 3:10track and field that we don't get to see quite often one is
- 3:14you're very open with your own training.
- 3:17So how you are actually training for your?
- 3:20I think you're primarily a discus.
- 3:21Thrower, is that correct? Yes.
- 3:23So you you're very open about successes and failures in that
- 3:28world which I think is fairly authentic.
- 3:30We like Only show our successes sometimes in that world.
- 3:35Yes. The big Temptation for sure
- 3:37Temptation. That's right, that's exactly
- 3:39that that is the right word because that means we can also
- 3:42not show. We can show the reality of what
- 3:44life is as well. And I think you do an excellent
- 3:46job there and then the other side of it not just your
- 3:49training but is your motherhood you know your mom was too and
- 3:53you again show good and bad, you know?
- 3:55Hey here's the great. I mean my child is the greatest
- 3:58child in the world and it's things like this, where it's
- 4:00like, oh yeah, they Were up all night so which means I was up
- 4:03all night. So I just really appreciate that
- 4:06authenticity. I think you know I truly believe
- 4:08in the power of social media and I think I'm say accounts like
- 4:12you but you're the real person behind the account people like
- 4:15you and how you utilize social media is extremely important and
- 4:21in real because it's real you know I'm not not a big fan of
- 4:24the curation it is a temptation to curate only the positive but
- 4:28I do like when someone shows everything.
- 4:31You know, hey here's here's the great J's.
- 4:33I'm having boy. Here's the bad days of heaven
- 4:35and so I'm just thrilled thankful for that.
- 4:36I think you're just an excellent person to follow on Twitter and
- 4:40kind of have that reality check. That wife is real and real
- 4:43things happen during that life. So so before we begin, why don't
- 4:46you tell us what your Twitter account is?
- 4:49That way if people want to kind of Follow That Journey, they can
- 4:51follow along. Actually, I think it's mrs.
- 4:55Rachel and juries, but I need to go double check because I've
- 4:58changed it a couple of times. Okay, yeah, mrs.
- 5:01Rachel Andrews is so missus Mrs, is that right?
- 5:05Yep. And then Rachel, AGL and all one
- 5:09word, no periods and hashes and all that kind of crazy stuff.
- 5:13Perfect, awesome. Well, if you're on Twitter, I
- 5:17would highly encourage you to go follow Rachel.
- 5:20It's really I don't want to overstate and say inspirational
- 5:24what you do in our you know your mom actually that is
- 5:27inspirational in its own right there.
- 5:29But it is again just it's a it's a real account of life.
- 5:33And so I just highly encourage you to go follow her.
- 5:36Unless you only want to see that everybody does perfect and
- 5:40everything's great. And then don't follow Rachel
- 5:42because it's Rachel's going to show you up and down left and
- 5:45right there. So Rachel, let's get to know you
- 5:49a little bit better here. As we work into your coaching
- 5:51career, what you've been doing coaching?
- 5:53And obviously your own throwing career is continuing to today.
- 5:57Why don't we start wherever track starts for you?
- 5:59Where does we're just kind of track and just in general
- 6:03coaching, begin for you. That's kind of a long story, so
- 6:07I remember how old I am right now so that's why we schedule 2
- 6:10hours. We got all. 27 years ago now is
- 6:16when I first started track, okay?
- 6:18I was nine at the time and I got into it because I was 14,
- 6:23Javelin, Javon look like fun, but I was too young to start
- 6:27Gavin. So I had to start with shoplet.
- 6:31Where did you grow up? That you even saw a javelin?
- 6:33I mean, that's not a common thing for a nine-year-old to
- 6:35see. No.
- 6:36So I grew up in Kansas and Kansas was at the time, one of
- 6:3911 states that allow Javelin. So I saw Javelin through Ooh,
- 6:43very good enough. Is that some of the little track
- 6:45meets or something? Or if I was, we had this old
- 6:47Olympic tape from the 80s that I John Powell.
- 6:49And I'll order and everything on it.
- 6:51And I would watch the Olympic events over and over again.
- 6:55I had this thing from, like, about the age of three that I'm
- 6:58like, I want to make the Olympics.
- 6:59I just didn't know when what and then I saw throwing events at
- 7:02about nine, like I'm recalling that, oh, wow, what was it about
- 7:06the? I mean, you know, there's a lot
- 7:08to be said about the Olympics. What was it that you're just
- 7:10like oh yeah, I want to be there in something.
- 7:12Then kind of found what you wanted to go and be watching
- 7:17these old 80's tapes. I love watching the torch being
- 7:19carried and the people getting their medals on the podiums.
- 7:22I'm you know, in their track suits and I was always a very
- 7:27sporty kid and I'm like I want to be the best at something so
- 7:30I'm going to try to go in this. So you saw the javelin you grew
- 7:34up in Kansas in since when you grew up there you mentioned, 11
- 7:37states. You're really no one ever tells
- 7:40me the exact number of states that was really like you
- 7:42obviously Research this a little bit.
- 7:44Luckily we've added some states, South Carolina, Florida, and
- 7:47Alabama. Since then it's grown we're
- 7:49still not quite 50 states, which I would love but we're growing
- 7:53almost every year. It seems like and that so you
- 7:56saw the stick and was like I want to do that and they were
- 7:58like yep. Not old enough.
- 7:59So here's a shop. I throw this ball.
- 8:01Yeah. I think it was 11 before they
- 8:03let you throw it at the meat. So I started with shot put and
- 8:07there was a couple other girls I through with at the time I broke
- 8:09a state record. My first meet out and You girls
- 8:13that I was with broke the state record again.
- 8:15And then again so I didn't actually get it but like it's
- 8:17like my back and actually be good at this.
- 8:19No who was, you know, I mean, I think at that time women and
- 8:25girls were actually in track and field so it's not like I don't
- 8:27think you're starting from the get-go of when women were
- 8:30getting into sports. Girls were getting a track and
- 8:32field so someone had to be coaching.
- 8:34You who is coaching you at that age?
- 8:37So my biological father at the time did a little bit most of it
- 8:42was from watching, John Pelham, Brian Oldfield videos.
- 8:46So we had like them on VHS, and I would watch him over and over
- 8:49again. Then just go out and throw four
- 8:50hours. Well, you didn't dress.
- 8:53Like Brian Oldfield though. Okay, good.
- 8:55Okay. Just a sanity check there.
- 8:58Just just question and I didn't like watching their stuff
- 9:02though, like is the videos John Powell.
- 9:04Especially was awesome to watch. I love it.
- 9:09So you go out and you just throw in the shot.
- 9:12How does that continue to prosper for you?
- 9:15Um, shoppable ended up being my weakest event.
- 9:17Out of all of them, probably just a lack of understanding of
- 9:20how the whole body. It's like starting it now I wish
- 9:25I understood. Then what I do now, same thing.
- 9:29I mean, even goes with discus or javelins.
- 9:31I hurt myself so many times with javelin that that one I really
- 9:35had to drop in college and we just would pick it up enough for
- 9:38me to win conference and then like Drop it again.
- 9:43Did you go through High School in Kansas?
- 9:46Yes, but I was home-schooled, so I wasn't actually allowed to go
- 9:49State. I would go to the Kansas relays
- 9:52and Stead my final year in high school.
- 9:57I won Javelin. And one shop.
- 9:59The Kansas relay. So I called that kind of like my
- 10:01state. Yeah.
- 10:03So you did you know, Kansas and we just had Brooke razznik out
- 10:06in Louisville on the show. You know.
- 10:08The Kansas State meat is a pretty special meat.
- 10:11I mean, tons of people attend and you didn't get to get to go
- 10:14because you were homeschooled. But it will help school is there
- 10:20at the meet my home School Association would have been one
- 10:23a so it would I would have dominated.
- 10:26Like I'm sure on it because you know being able to win that
- 10:31Kansas relays like you're going against not just the one through
- 10:34six a but then you've got, you know, people from around the
- 10:36other states. All right, so that one is a much
- 10:40bigger meat In. So as you went through high
- 10:45school years as a homeschooler did, dad keep coaching you or
- 10:49did Brian Oldfield. Keep coaching you, how did you
- 10:51continue to? I mean, you kept getting better.
- 10:53So something had to be occurring.
- 10:55Well, I took out a lot of my coaching myself.
- 10:58I didn't understand anything about weightlifting.
- 11:01And so, my weightlifting was, you know, like four sets of ten,
- 11:04five sets of ten when I believe, I didn't get into really good
- 11:08weight, lifting until college, but I would set myself these
- 11:11guidelines. Line sheets and like write down
- 11:13how many throws I was going to do it each bit per day and I
- 11:15tapered it like I didn't know what tapering was at the time.
- 11:18I just knew if I like did a big load here and then did a smaller
- 11:21load close to my big meet I did better.
- 11:24How are you mean? That's a pretty high level for a
- 11:2914 15 16 year old kid to be thinking that way you know it's
- 11:35much easier for a kid that age to you know throw a couple times
- 11:38and then go play with their friends and you know eventually
- 11:41kind of You got to be structured for that and you're very
- 11:43structured there. What does that come from?
- 11:46Honestly, I don't know. I did a lot of reading as a kid
- 11:49and some of it may have just you know, stuck in there by osmosis.
- 11:55But yeah. Like I don't remember even
- 11:57reading anything about weightlifting or proper training
- 12:00techniques. Same thing with like diet and
- 12:03exercising in general. Like I didn't grow up in this
- 12:06area where like Diet was a big deal.
- 12:08I could give you a pie in your lunch every day and it's just
- 12:11like Nice, right? Like I cut that out and like
- 12:16seventh grade and then I'm like, well, I'm not going to eat past
- 12:188:00 p.m. because I read somewhere like it's bad for your
- 12:20digestive system. Like it was kind of a I was very
- 12:23much a self motivator. Yeah.
- 12:25Right. We're other kids in the home
- 12:29school I know a little bit about homeschooling that you mentioned
- 12:32your homeschooling Association. There's usually a community
- 12:35around the or other kids interested in track as well.
- 12:39Or was this just a Rachel only thing?
- 12:41No, we had a track club for a little bit.
- 12:43So when I was 5th to 7th grade, I was in one track club with our
- 12:49homeschool Association, but it was run by a long-distance
- 12:52Runner and he made everybody run like eight laps around the track
- 12:55to start practice. Oh no, my calves, got amazing
- 12:59and you know fifth or sixth grade but by the time I was down
- 13:02my warmup. I couldn't move sure like right
- 13:05now. Go throw.
- 13:06No I'm gonna go sit out. Yes.
- 13:08It's so he also had a rule that everybody had a red.
- 13:10It meets it after I got Dead last at the 100-meter.
- 13:13He's like, no, you can throw now.
- 13:16Wow. First of all, I love that you
- 13:19broke the rules, like all right. You know what Rachel?
- 13:22Yeah, I thought that was a good rule you just go through.
- 13:25Yeah. I was a bit of a chunky kid at
- 13:27the time. Like, I got better at the
- 13:28hundred meter and I did 4 by 100 meter.
- 13:30Dash through high school. I think I was like 13, 10 13, 12
- 13:36for like my meter. So like it wasn't terrible for
- 13:39throw her out spikes on Iran, that in basketball shoes.
- 13:46But yeah, like early on like I was not definitely not a runner
- 13:52and so I really advocate for the kids.
- 13:53Now, as a coach the ones that are definitely not Runners, like
- 13:56just need to come through things, right?
- 14:00Exactly. There's too far to the hey, you
- 14:02never know. So they should try a bunch of
- 14:04different events. You know, somewhere there has to
- 14:06be reasonably like yeah. Okay, you we found your event
- 14:09area. Let's just stay over there.
- 14:12I love it, I love it. Okay, so you go through, you get
- 14:15home. Schooled for your education but
- 14:18you're looking at going on to college.
- 14:21Where did you go? And why did you choose that?
- 14:25So I went to Oral Roberts University down in Tulsa, they
- 14:28are a D1. I was recruited by a few other
- 14:31colleges but or he was the one that really fit at the time.
- 14:36They didn't have a track. So we went and practice at high
- 14:38school, which was better than what I had done, which was off a
- 14:41parking lot or, you know, driveway as a high schooler The
- 14:48I really like the whole atmosphere like Tulsa, it's like
- 14:51the biggest small town you'll ever be in.
- 14:55I agree. My guy was like my brother
- 14:58coached at University of Tulsa for a while and so I'd visited.
- 15:02That's where we got married, everything and yeah, I would
- 15:05describe it. Exactly how you just said, it's
- 15:07like, oh, it's the biggest little town that you'll ever go
- 15:09to. I guess.
- 15:09It's a little town. But boy, it's got everything.
- 15:11You know. It really is a neat, little
- 15:13little place there in Tulsa. That's awesome.
- 15:16What was it about? Oral Roberts?
- 15:17Was it the throws coach? Was it just the has a unique
- 15:21culture there as well? You know, the great, Joe, dial
- 15:24and Shana die. I'll have been there forever.
- 15:26They should probably just change the name of the university to
- 15:29dial University. That would be even much more for
- 15:32the track people. For sure, what was it there
- 15:34about all Roberts. The, the coaches really
- 15:37impressed me. I worked under Chris Brown,
- 15:40coach style was like the head coach, and then Chris Brown was
- 15:43the assistant and he works with jumpers and throwers and he
- 15:48really impressed me with my, like first visit.
- 15:51And I was like, I really like you, like we drive well
- 15:54together, I work well with you. It takes me a while to trust
- 15:56people. And so, if I start trusting
- 15:58somebody within like a visitor to, that's a big deal.
- 16:01Hmm. And so I'm trying to imagine,
- 16:05you know, someone who was very much self coached through high
- 16:09school for the majority of it, it sounds like and then you go
- 16:13to college. Well, there is no self coaching
- 16:16their coach Browns going to coach you there.
- 16:18How did you adjust to? The, I'm not writing the
- 16:21workouts anymore. I'm listening to Coach Brown and
- 16:23what he's telling me. To do.
- 16:26Well, what I first got into the weight room, I was doing like a
- 16:30two plates on the leg press, if that gives you an idea because I
- 16:33had not done like the strength development that I needed.
- 16:35I mean, I honestly thought you're going to stay on the
- 16:37bench press. I was like, good God.
- 16:40Okay. All right.
- 16:41No, I benchpress until 2016, but No, like just coach towel.
- 16:52Then he came one of my first memories of Coach tiles.
- 16:54He came in there and he's like, you call yourself a thrower.
- 16:57What do you lifted? Hold on.
- 17:00You gotta do that little better with more of a Joe dial accent.
- 17:08Joe doll Southern going on. What are you lifting?
- 17:12You are. Thrower, that's much closer.
- 17:18I love Joe dial for track and he and, you know, they're like not
- 17:26supposed to be over something. He would set the scale and he's
- 17:28like, you better not be under this.
- 17:31All right, interesting, I need to get bigger and bigger for
- 17:35throw things. Did you any more structured
- 17:40weight program? Did you gain strength pretty
- 17:42easily? Hmm.
- 17:45Yeah, by the time I graduated, I had gone from just like two
- 17:48plates to. Let's see his 10 plates on
- 17:52either side, so it's about 20 plates on likely grass, dude, I
- 17:58mean, that's quite amazing. Yeah, so that's structured
- 18:02program. Was it was huge for me.
- 18:05And did that translate into better throwing Yes.
- 18:12Except for Javelin because I lost a lot of flexibility for
- 18:14Jabba the injuries. But I went from 45 in high
- 18:21school to 55 in college for disk.
- 18:25Yeah. And my shot ended up at 1574 and
- 18:30I think in high school I was at 11:11 High 1190.
- 18:34Absolutely. And what were you studying what
- 18:36were you wanting a career to be? Graphic design.
- 18:41So that's what I ended up. Studying all the tide started
- 18:44looking at engineering and then I settled on graphic design.
- 18:47They're kind of related, but you getting like math class.
- 18:51And then I was like, yeah, graphic designs, perfect.
- 18:54Oh no, I'm pretty good at math but I don't know.
- 18:58Like one of the things that I was told was like if it's comes
- 19:01easy to you, it's probably something you were meant to do.
- 19:04And so Art more came easy to me, like seeing things from outside
- 19:09the box. that sounds a lot of that's going to Yes.
- 19:15Yeah. You need to be a box.
- 19:18Yeah. It's in the soon.
- 19:18As you said it becomes easy to you.
- 19:21Maybe that's what you were meant to do.
- 19:23And if you do need to talk about your throwing and not having a
- 19:25structured coaching and yet still being successful.
- 19:27That's first thing I thought I was like, oh yeah, you were
- 19:29meant to be a thrower. Like it did kind of come
- 19:32naturally to you. Yeah, I like that.
- 19:35That's cool. So how did the coaching career
- 19:38go in regards to coaches? Coach Brown is working with you
- 19:42specifically. Coach dials overseeing the
- 19:44entire program and focusing a lot on vaulters, obviously.
- 19:48But, you know, he can coach a lot of stuff.
- 19:49He's a great coach. What did your coaches do for
- 19:53you? That were positive as you kind
- 19:54of look back. Now, you have perspective on,
- 19:57you know what, how they interacted with you, coached,
- 20:00you taught you Etc. Well, Coach Brown, I actually
- 20:04still work with, he's still one of my coaches, and I'm working
- 20:07with him and my coach up here simultaneously.
- 20:10It's nice to get to different people saying the same thing at
- 20:13me, but no, like, it's the, the structured environment was great
- 20:21Coach Brown. He's got an interesting, like,
- 20:24we have an interesting relationship.
- 20:26You know, if I go out there and have bad throws, like you suck,
- 20:28you knew throw better like, but it's what I needed to hear from
- 20:32him. It's just It works for our
- 20:35relationship. I got mad at an official at
- 20:39conference because he called foul one time and Coach Brown
- 20:41comes over and gives me a punch in my like left arm and he's
- 20:44like, you go, you go and throw further now so that's what I
- 20:48feel. Like my big PB and shot is like
- 20:50a half M PB to win. My only winning shot for
- 20:54conference. How does a coach Spying that
- 20:59individually because I'm assuming Rachel.
- 21:03So you needed that but maybe a teammate needed.
- 21:07May be the exact opposite, like you would, you know, say Hey you
- 21:10suck and that person might just crumbles like oh that's the
- 21:13worst. You know you might as well have
- 21:14just punched me in the gut. How does a coach learn that or
- 21:18at least maybe in your own experience.
- 21:20How did Coach learn that about you?
- 21:23To that individualize like okay, this is how Rachel needs to be
- 21:28motivated or whatever word you might want to use their?
- 21:31Well, I mean, like, in NC double-a one, you spend a lot of
- 21:33time together like they are at the college five days a week.
- 21:37And like I'd have morning practices just with Coach
- 21:40because my schedule didn't work to do with the afternoon team
- 21:44and then we're in the weight room for two to three hours.
- 21:46So it's, you know, with the track practice in the weight
- 21:48room, you're with your coach, four to five hours a day
- 21:51sometimes and Bus trips, and I tended to sit near my coaches
- 21:56because I was studying. I was one of those kids that
- 21:58studied a lot on the bus rather than goofing off one of the few
- 22:04is. And yeah, you start to learn
- 22:07more about what the athlete really wants.
- 22:11And I think I responded well to sarcasm and so there's a certain
- 22:13level of sarcasm. He's still very sarcastic with
- 22:18me on some of my stuff, like if I add a lot of speed on a
- 22:22Sprint, he's over here like you double time that video to send
- 22:25it to me, didn't you? He's just, it's fun, like enjoys
- 22:31messing with me and I'm like, I mess with him right back.
- 22:34Yeah, it's interesting. You know, no one style is the
- 22:39right style for everybody. And there's a real skill to be
- 22:45able to learn this athlete, or this group of athletes needs to
- 22:49be spoken to this way and heard this way, and this group of my
- 22:54athletes needs a different tact. And guess what, this group over
- 22:57here, needs a different tag. That's Real skill.
- 23:02And I'm not sure it's an easy one to learn either.
- 23:06No, because I started doing coaching even before I went to
- 23:09college in high school with some high school teammates because I
- 23:13joined another home school club and like they knew nothing about
- 23:16throws. So I'd help my teammates out and
- 23:19it's like, it's still something I think in development on,
- 23:22picking up what each athlete needs because some of them
- 23:25respond well to the sarcasm other ones of them like, you
- 23:28need to give them the Cookie like, you know, this is what you
- 23:30did ask, this is what we need work on.
- 23:32This is what you did. Excellent, right.
- 23:34Yeah. And I think the word you used
- 23:36earlier, it might be the real ingredient for that, and that's
- 23:41trust, like, the athlete has to trust.
- 23:44I can be my authentic self with Coach as well, because that way
- 23:48he or she will know how I am and who I am and what I am so they
- 23:51can treat me accordingly versus well I'm just going to I'm going
- 23:55to I'm going to keep to myself and see how coach.
- 23:58Is and you know and it's like well you guys aren't being your
- 24:00real selves to each other. So you sounds like you were able
- 24:02to just kind of be your real self fairly early in the
- 24:05coaching process there. Yeah.
- 24:07It like normally it takes me a while with people I think I've
- 24:10gotten better about that as I've gotten older but even with my
- 24:13coach here it was I'd known her for three or four years before.
- 24:17I kind of brought her in asthma second coach and really was like
- 24:22yeah you know what you're talking about?
- 24:24Well you said it takes you a little time to think your words
- 24:27were warm up to One. But with Coach Brown, it was
- 24:30fairly early. It was very, very early, we had.
- 24:35So for my weightlifting, we were kind of convinced well, he
- 24:39shouldn't do any Max's, and this wasn't on Coach Brown side.
- 24:42This was more just kind of how I've grown up and so he like
- 24:46accommodated that and worked with me as much as possible with
- 24:49it. And so we still had a taper, but
- 24:50I'd be starting the year. I like 18 reps.
- 24:53I don't do that anymore. I'm like, that was horrible.
- 24:55Wow, yeah. So we could drop to you know
- 24:59five or six doing the Max's. I didn't actually start maxing
- 25:04until after my first kid was born.
- 25:07Wow. Yeah that's not uncommon, right?
- 25:10And again we're getting a little too close to X's and O's but I
- 25:12am curious as someone who now works out in the gym, and I
- 25:15never max out because I never want to bother anybody in the
- 25:18gym. That's my reasoning.
- 25:20But not maxing out. Has become more popular back
- 25:24when I when I was in school where were roughly the same age?
- 25:27We maxed out. I mean we were probably a pretty
- 25:29terrible program. We maxed out every week that's
- 25:31excessive, but we did what? Yeah, hey, you started 18 reps.
- 25:35Let's talk about excessive, right?
- 25:37I'm not sure which one's the more success there.
- 25:40But now they're see in my saying now, is maybe last 5 to 10
- 25:43years. There seems to be more of a push
- 25:46of like, you know, to rep. Three rep for rep.
- 25:48Max has, are more important and may be safer than the, the
- 25:52single rep max. Well.
- 25:54On my, as I've gone through coaching my thoughts of even
- 25:57evolved That because I've got kids that, you know, they're not
- 26:00comfortable maxing yet, either. Or I want to start their base
- 26:03program and so we'll start them, you know, maybe 12 reps and be
- 26:06working them through the, through a base program.
- 26:08And not get them to maxing for three or four years, really kind
- 26:11of depends on, you know, where they start.
- 26:14And so, I think, the way Coach Brown is set up, my base program
- 26:17was really good for my body because I was so injury-prone in
- 26:20high school that I needed, that some of that.
- 26:24So, I think not jumping me into Max's like some of The college
- 26:28coaches now, we'll jump kids into Max's that haven't done any
- 26:30weightlifting like it's you know, Pro more prone to injury.
- 26:35But but now I just really kind of change.
- 26:37It depends on what the kids are needing, and even some of our
- 26:41lips, I'll be like, we can do our five rep max on this, but
- 26:44this one will do, like, our one rep max on.
- 26:46So, like leg lifts is a lot easier to do five rep max.
- 26:49And but if you're doing bench press 5 rep, max is rough.
- 26:52Yeah, for sure, for sure. The only thing worse is that 18
- 26:56rep max? Oh my goodness.
- 27:00Yeah, so I don't know, I think the with this you're thinking
- 27:04always evolves as you're coaching the more you learn like
- 27:07more coaches, you talk to you more, your figure it out, adding
- 27:12to your own toolbox, why didn't you just curious?
- 27:15You know, you obviously have a passion for called Human
- 27:19Performance and obviously your own performance and you coached
- 27:23a little bit in The Homeschool Group, things like that.
- 27:25No thoughts of ever going into like, an exercise science.
- 27:28Or an education degree or you know, teaching things like that.
- 27:32So teaching when I took my career, aptitude test was at the
- 27:35very bottom of my list. It was like you not you will
- 27:38suck at this kind of thing you will hurt kids, don't do this,
- 27:43was the top of my list. There was nothing in there for
- 27:46coaching or Kinesiology looking back on this.
- 27:49I have a fascination with how your muscles work and how the
- 27:52body works too. And so I've studied into the
- 27:55whole exercise science without the degree and I'm like, I
- 27:57really wish I had at least done this as a minor or something at
- 28:00this point, but when I was going to college, if you were doing
- 28:04exercise science is because you were lazy.
- 28:09There are so many athletes going in exercise science to be lazy.
- 28:16That's interesting. I mean, there's an obvious
- 28:19connection between you and the body, you know, the human
- 28:22performance. And so that's why it's like me
- 28:23and didn't ever come across your mind?
- 28:25Yeah, that's interesting. Okay, so we graduate with a
- 28:28graphics design, major from Oral Roberts.
- 28:30Great institution there in Oklahoma.
- 28:32What came next I continued my training with discus because I
- 28:40was trying to make the Olympic team and the US and there was
- 28:46also trying to get, you know, work.
- 28:48So the transition going out of college and needing to work and
- 28:51pay bills. And train was very interesting,
- 28:54Coach Brown continued working with me and we'd sometimes go
- 28:57out at, you know, 8 or 9:00 a.m. before I went into work and get
- 29:00in some throws and then I'd go into work.
- 29:03Like throw my hair up in a ponytail, put my work.
- 29:05Goes over the top of my workout clothes and going to work and,
- 29:10and then go weight-lift afterwards.
- 29:14My husband and I met in 2011 and got married in early 2012.
- 29:18So like the last time I was in, the States was October 2012.
- 29:25So he was there for like, my last year of real training in
- 29:27the state's. You come and weight lift with
- 29:29me. But during all this time, I was
- 29:33doing like, for jobs because Was a bad time in the us for jobs.
- 29:39I couldn't get a job in graphic design.
- 29:42No matter how many places I applied to they're like we want
- 29:4420 years experience for minimum weight was like, dude.
- 29:48So I ended up painting which was related and is like it was a
- 29:52workout. So I got to keep working towards
- 29:54my goal of, you know, Fitness while working at the same time,
- 29:59which was ideal for me. So that kind of got me in the
- 30:01whole painting room. Tell me more about that.
- 30:05When you say painting, honestly, the first thing I think of is
- 30:08mr. Miyagi and, you know, the up
- 30:10down, up down, you might be talking more about like,
- 30:13artistic painting. So the stuff behind me on the
- 30:16wall. This is what some of the stuff I
- 30:17did. This is called glazing and
- 30:20process that you do over the top of paint.
- 30:22After you, do the regular wall painting.
- 30:24And so, that's what I got into are going to do a faux,
- 30:26finishing painting company and we would do faux finishes and
- 30:30all the ritzy houses and Tulsa. Started doing murals for them.
- 30:35When I figured out, I could do that kind of stuff on a big
- 30:37scale, like I was doing trees and branches and other things
- 30:42like, so that freak forgive me, I'm fascinated with artistic
- 30:46stuff, but I can't. I'm still working on my stick
- 30:48figure, so I haven't quite got my own artistic but you were
- 30:51doing you say, mural. So I'm thinking big murals.
- 30:53Your, I feel like you're talking about like, the, what, like,
- 30:55you're right behind you. You don't want a full wall in
- 30:58your hand doing like trees and Landscape stuff.
- 31:02So the And I did was just like, kind of a shadow tree.
- 31:05Like it was a full-size. It was on like a 15-foot wall
- 31:09and then 20 feet wide and I free hand drew it and then like we
- 31:12had our whole team paint it, but it was like a single collar is
- 31:15for a family tree wall, so they can hang up pictures of cool.
- 31:19They had an idea and I sketched out the idea to make sure it was
- 31:22way they wanted it and then put the whole thing on a huge wall.
- 31:27How did you even find you had the skill for that?
- 31:30I mean, that has to be a skill. It is, I had no idea in college.
- 31:35I could do this. I skipped out on the painting
- 31:36classes. I was likely, I'm not going to
- 31:39do that. More do web design, no, but I've
- 31:45been fairly good at drawing. And so, like my boss at one
- 31:49point, she was like, you think you can do this, you can try it.
- 31:51I was like, okay, we can always paint over hurt, if you mess it
- 31:54up, Alright. Alright.
- 31:55And then, from then on What's been your most challenging or
- 32:02interesting project like that that you've done?
- 32:05Well in my house right now, I've got Calvin and Hobbes up on one
- 32:07wall that I did from a page for my sons of hers as I say you did
- 32:12for the little one. Yeah.
- 32:13Oh, that's so cool. So that one was pretty
- 32:16challenging. I've done a few here, where I
- 32:18live like more trees like for coffee shop here in town, the
- 32:25business. My husband used to work at was
- 32:27an internet company and they wanted like triangles and like
- 32:3020 different shades of orange. So that one was hard to try to
- 32:32find the shades of orange and paint because you can find it it
- 32:35color on like, you know, computer because he doesn't
- 32:37thousands to work from the paint is not as forgiving.
- 32:42Hmm. And I did that on a ladder.
- 32:44Her well, 32 weeks, pregnant with my son.
- 32:52Holy cow. But yeah.
- 32:55And then I did some other ones that look like technical wires
- 32:57going across the walls. I was eight weeks pregnant with
- 33:01my son at that point and that one was worse because I was so
- 33:04nauseated like well I'm flattered.
- 33:06Yeah holy cow, that's quite amazing.
- 33:11You know doing anything while you're pregnant I think is you
- 33:14know like that's just amazing. I just can't imagine doing that
- 33:17and I'm thankful every day that God made me a guy and not a gal
- 33:20that that honestly but to be up Ladders and, you know, paint
- 33:27fumes and all that kind of stuff.
- 33:28I mean, just it's quite a me, the creativity.
- 33:31There is amazing the paint fumes.
- 33:33We don't have to worry as much now about like all the paint.
- 33:36I use didn't have any fumes and some working around while
- 33:40pregnant. I used to do a bunch of cabinet
- 33:43staining and refinishing and that kind of stuff.
- 33:45I got to wear a big mask for yeah for sure.
- 33:47Right? Yeah.
- 33:48Okay, that makes sense and all this.
- 33:50While you're doing these really cool creative things and you
- 33:52meet your husband, are you you're throwing Going in
- 33:55training the whole time, grow continuing to train.
- 33:59What was was there is husband thrower or any track backgrounds
- 34:05that he did. He ever did?
- 34:08He Wonder like, what are you doing?
- 34:09Why do you throw this frisbee a little bit.
- 34:13So he's a tech guy, like he's a nerd.
- 34:15We kind of more bonded around Photoshop and like doing stuff
- 34:18on the computer and nerdy things.
- 34:19Because another one of the things I did in the states,
- 34:22after I got out of college, I started a computer business
- 34:24because I had no way to make money.
- 34:26So I started fixing computers for people.
- 34:28It's Mike. Done as a side hustle in college
- 34:31because people always were breaking their computers or
- 34:33couldn't get it to turn around on their printer wouldn't work.
- 34:36So they'd call me till I come work on their computer.
- 34:39You're like the ultimate artistic it.
- 34:44Yes. Yes.
- 34:44And they kind of all go well together like it works.
- 34:46The same side of the brain. Yeah.
- 34:48Artistic it who also throws. Let me that's a pretty heck of a
- 34:52triangle combination there. Oh and Mom in there.
- 34:55So what then we have a full Square?
- 34:58I've known as a bit of a Multitasker.
- 35:00But yes, I could see that. Yes.
- 35:07So husband's from Canada. Is that how you made us again?
- 35:11We met online. Yeah, so my wife and I met
- 35:15through match.com. Did you meet through like one of
- 35:17those or how did you eat all of us?
- 35:18So my husband and I were both cheap and didn't have a lot of
- 35:21money. The time we met on Christian
- 35:23dating for free.com. Awesome.
- 35:32I tried like Match.com and it was like, there are no matches
- 35:36for you. Yeah.
- 35:42So what's it like I don't think I've even really been to Canada.
- 35:46I think I drove up over the Border once long time ago.
- 35:49So what's it like you've been in Canada now for a few years, the
- 35:53differences of, you know, living in the States versus living up
- 35:56in Canada. Well, whether you're wise, it
- 36:00sucks because we've got winter six months out of the year and
- 36:03we got to find indoor activities.
- 36:05Hmm yes I used to build a throw outside 11 months.
- 36:09Out of the Year 11 and a half months, depending on, you know,
- 36:11rain and Ice storms in Oklahoma. But they'd only last for like
- 36:16three days and you go back outside and throw some more.
- 36:19So here we have to get training facilities for indoors for six
- 36:22months out of the Year and be fighting everybody else for the
- 36:25indoor training facilities, and it's taken me a few years, just
- 36:28to figure out how to best use our indoor facility.
- 36:31Like, I've got a big tarp now to throw discus into, I've got
- 36:36Rubber throwing puds or discus balls that we use to, you know,
- 36:41not break the basketball court. Last year, I started doing more
- 36:45weight throw indoors with my kids, but the regular weights we
- 36:48would need like the heavy-duty mats for and I don't have money
- 36:50for that right now, right? So I got slam balls and I put
- 36:54them inside a tornado bag and those have been working because
- 36:57you still get the same weight. It's not necessarily like the
- 36:59same handle structure but you still get all the turns that
- 37:01everything in yeah which is nice.
- 37:05What a shocker. Being creative to figure out a
- 37:08solution to a problem. Yeah.
- 37:09What a, what a shocker healthy other clubs around to because
- 37:12they're like, oh, we're gonna do that now.
- 37:14Yes, I did. See you like, oh, great idea,
- 37:17let's go. So, why as you continue to throw
- 37:24and your career and being a spouse and now being a mom, why
- 37:31get into coaching? I mean, you, you know, if we
- 37:34have the proverbial juggler you I've already got six, seven,
- 37:37eight balls up in the air. Why go to this?
- 37:41You know, it feels like it's almost like adding a bowling
- 37:43ball into that juggling of tennis balls.
- 37:44One big hairy goal here to coach throwers as well.
- 37:49Well, throw has been my passion for so long that I want to be
- 37:52able to pass that on to other people.
- 37:54And I've done so many things wrong that I also know how to
- 37:57get these kids on the right path faster.
- 38:01And I've been asked a lot like why don't you just concentrate
- 38:04on your own throwing rather than And I'm like, but then these
- 38:07kids wouldn't be here. I've got a lot of kids that are
- 38:09competing collegiately. Now, that wouldn't be able to be
- 38:12here if I hadn't been coaching because it's just like the
- 38:15amount of throws coaches are are not very much like I am through
- 38:21our system. It's nccp coaching
- 38:24qualifications, like I'm performance coach certified ever
- 38:27throws. And I think in the country,
- 38:30there's maybe like, eight of us that are really like, at this
- 38:32level and then we've got for their higher than that.
- 38:35Like Performance level, but there's not a whole lot of high
- 38:38performance throws coaches. And I'm living in a small town
- 38:42now that has like 8,000 people. So it's like really small.
- 38:46Yeah. Like these Farm kids hardly even
- 38:49know what track is and it's like if I wasn't here offering this
- 38:53like nobody would know. So how do you you're dealing
- 38:58mainly with the high school? Aged kids.
- 39:00I volunteer started volunteering when I moved up here over at the
- 39:03high school as a volunteer throws coach and that's largely
- 39:05where I get my club coaches from club kids as I recruit them from
- 39:09the high school kids that want to continue in.
- 39:13What do you you know it's easy for us to see ourselves in the
- 39:18kids? We coach.
- 39:19Well, you know we were, we were that age at one point in our
- 39:21life, feels like a long time ago.
- 39:23Sometimes, but we were that age. Do you see?
- 39:26These kids you see yourself in these kids and want to give them
- 39:30a little bit better than what you had and you know you had you
- 39:33at that age is that a goal of yours?
- 39:36Or what's going to give them a much better start and get them
- 39:40into college like with a much better Foundation.
- 39:42Then I had because I think if I had a better start at this and
- 39:48actually training properly like the college career would have
- 39:53been better. Like it was good college career
- 39:55but But I think less injury-prone even just knowing
- 40:00how to take care of your body, how to rest properly?
- 40:02I'm still trying to fight, you know, how to rest properly,
- 40:04because I like throwing too much.
- 40:08But teaching my kids, how to rest properly, how to take
- 40:10proper sets, you know what, tapering is with their weight
- 40:14programs. Get them to actually trust their
- 40:16coach. Like, you know, you can ask
- 40:17questions, but trust your coach in the long run.
- 40:22And how many laps do you make them do before exits?
- 40:26We're throwers. We don't know if the kids get in
- 40:29trouble. It's go.
- 40:30Fill the bucket for the hammer so we can fill the holes like it
- 40:36good. So no more eight laps.
- 40:38You didn't emulate that? All right.
- 40:40Good. Yeah not at all.
- 40:42Like most of my throwers I'm actually doing pretty good.
- 40:44If we do a quarter quarter mile like one lap Jog and then a
- 40:47stretch like most of them. It's a fight together.
- 40:53It was like importance of stretching.
- 40:55Is also something we're trying to pass on.
- 40:57I've got some kids that are struggling with that they're
- 40:59like I don't think stretching is a good thing and I'm like, but
- 41:01you've got pains right now that you need stretching for to.
- 41:04Yeah, happening. You're like, trust me it.
- 41:08See me today. I wish I had done more of this
- 41:10that when your age I had all these injuries that could have
- 41:13been prevented. I'm trying to help you prevent
- 41:15the same thing. Actually, exactly.
- 41:18Do you see much of a difference? You know, it's easy for us to
- 41:22Two, especially online, pick on American kids.
- 41:26And what I mean by that is, you know, we're lazy.
- 41:29They only want to play football or they only want to go D1 or
- 41:33insert a lot of other really big, and not so great.
- 41:38Generalizations of young people today.
- 41:40I think we tend to forget what we were.
- 41:42Like when We Are Young, by the way, do you see that in Canadian
- 41:46kids? Is it, is it a similar?
- 41:48A scores are some reason. There's a difference up there.
- 41:50So just to tell you what, the I think kids think of American
- 41:54kids, they're always, like, what are they feeding them down
- 41:57there? Why are they all so massive and
- 41:59likes grows. So, there is something that's
- 42:03being done, right down in the states.
- 42:05And I think part of that is, like, starting at a younger age,
- 42:07we're fighting that here. Most kids don't get introduced
- 42:10to it until they're in like ninth grade.
- 42:12Hmm, properly introduced and saving with weight training from
- 42:17what I've seen with the kids. I think a lot of this is more
- 42:19social media. They're like you know if I get
- 42:21my name out there I can. Get on a d 1 and d 1 is this
- 42:25clout? Like I made it to D1 school even
- 42:27in Canada. Even in Canada it's more of a
- 42:31yeah, D1. Like even, but it's more going
- 42:33to the states in general here in Canada.
- 42:36Most of my kids have opted to go to leverage University.
- 42:41Actually, I don't know Larry Steinke.
- 42:43He's one of our Olympic level throws coaches and he said,
- 42:46really well with his hammer through his program.
- 42:48Hmm, he has Jillian, we are right now which is our number
- 42:52two in Canada. Yeah, he had Liz Glee do for
- 42:55job. And so I've five of my
- 43:00hamburgers all the way down there.
- 43:03It's that because there's Simon Fraser is in the NCAA.
- 43:09Is there another? I thought there was another
- 43:11Canadian school but I could be wrong.
- 43:12That's the only one I'm aware of that sitting there instead of a
- 43:16a division to well. So I've had a couple kids
- 43:21consider that one but part of the reason not to go up, there
- 43:25is BC is expensive. It's like going to California.
- 43:29Rania. Like if you cannot afford to be
- 43:31on campus and in Canada, we don't do full ride scholarships.
- 43:35They do a bunch of like, little scholarships, the colleges are
- 43:38overall cheaper. Like it's, you know, 4,000 a
- 43:40year to go to college. Oh, wow.
- 43:44I don't think, I don't think. I think some schools charge 4000
- 43:47to apply to their schools here in the states.
- 43:50It's a slight exaggeration, but yeah, one of money to go around
- 43:54in general, there's a head coach position that came up for our
- 43:58University in Recently, and they were offered 50k for a head
- 44:01coach position. And I'm over here like no, I
- 44:05know what a head coach needs. Tells you where our track
- 44:08program is, like we don't have all the money to go around.
- 44:10We don't have the big football stadiums and like programs
- 44:14Canadian football is different to begin with.
- 44:18So I was going to in this may be just a terrible stereotype of
- 44:21Canadians in general you know down here we say we are always
- 44:25competing against football like footballs the big four male
- 44:28track athletes. So, you know, they if they get
- 44:31into football and then they have to do Spring ball and all this
- 44:34kind of stuff and they don't do track.
- 44:36I imagine that's how it is for hockey in Canada.
- 44:40Yes, you got it is. Okay.
- 44:42Alright good. Alright.
- 44:43That's stereotype holds true. All right, good.
- 44:45He is like the only sport they'll start at like Age 3 and
- 44:48don't do it all year round hockey camps.
- 44:51You know, how you drop training, all this other stuff and track.
- 44:55For example, in high school we get six weeks maybe.
- 44:58Oh wow. Yeah, like and that's if the
- 45:01kids show up when I start going out, when snow melts, most the
- 45:05kids I work with two or three weeks for track and that's their
- 45:08experience of track. And so that's one of the things
- 45:12I've been working on trying to change.
- 45:13While I've been up here is like trying to get these kids out
- 45:15sooner or make sure they know it's an offered thing because
- 45:17our clubs will go all year round, but school system is also
- 45:21different than in today. A like the when they did go to
- 45:23college, they only do indoor track with the college if they
- 45:27want to do outdoor track. They join a club.
- 45:30Is that true for Simon Fraser as well?
- 45:33Simon Fraser is weird because they get to go down to the
- 45:36States and okay, so they do because they're pretty
- 45:38considerably. They will do an outdoor but all
- 45:40the other schools Mcgill, and those guys.
- 45:43They're not doing outdoor that's going to Club at that point.
- 45:46Let's go in the club so they'll do use for its installed
- 45:48indoors. That's you, Sports is their big
- 45:50thing and that's their equivalent to the Indies NCAA
- 45:52division 1 like indoor championships, okay?
- 45:55But all the colleges will participate in these Forks.
- 45:59But it's definitely been something to adjust to up here
- 46:02because it's like, there hasn't been the pressure put on
- 46:05outdoor, which is why if you look at our national rankings,
- 46:08our top three or four are really high up there and then it drops
- 46:12very steeply especially for the outdoor events.
- 46:15Indoor like shop. What's really strong?
- 46:17Because we have that indoor and outdoor, right?
- 46:22That makes sense. It's fascinating to me the
- 46:25differences amongst you know we have a lot of differences here
- 46:29you know you described it actually in the state of Kansas
- 46:33we have a lot of differences culturally and track and field
- 46:35amongst our state's right? So Kansas has Javelin.
- 46:37Oklahoma does not things like that.
- 46:40So it's really fascinating to me when we start talking about
- 46:42other countries and we're talking about you know not only
- 46:46culturally for our sport but how culture of the society effects
- 46:50in. So here we have institutions you
- 46:52Thinking colleges like, oh, yeah, like you have indoor and
- 46:55outdoor. And, you know, the weird ones
- 46:56down here, maybe don't do indoor like, they'll, but they're
- 46:59definitely doing outdoor. Everybody is doing outdoor track
- 47:02and the college's here and it candidates like yeah, you're
- 47:04going club for that. So clubs the club system must be
- 47:07and that's probably maybe where Cal Taff comes in the club
- 47:10system must be tremendous must be really well-built out there
- 47:13than in Canada. Yes like the club, I'm a part of
- 47:16it. I'm pretty sure it's the biggest
- 47:18one in Alberta. We've got a little over 400
- 47:20kids. Hmm.
- 47:22Coaches are coach to kid ratios like 12 to 1 or something.
- 47:26So, it tells you how many coaches we need to have Your
- 47:29coach to kid told the 10K your kind of one coach for 12 kids.
- 47:33Yes. I heard that at 12 coaches per
- 47:35one kid. Not as like found that many
- 47:38coaches, like, first of all. Yeah.
- 47:40How'd you get that many coaches? Can you bring some down here?
- 47:42Second of all? I'm not sure that's healthy.
- 47:45No, which is why when I say, like, you know, it's hard to
- 47:48find coaches. Like they've done a really good
- 47:49job, trying to fish the coaches out, we get all the coaches that
- 47:52are really available, and, you know, give them their education
- 47:56that they need in order to be good coaches and be able to help
- 47:58the kid. Progress eventually, like get
- 48:02these kids into college system here or down in the states.
- 48:07I think a couple of hours are from last year down in the
- 48:10state's now this year. But we do, we do churn out as
- 48:15many, you know, high level athletes, as want to get to that
- 48:18level, just kids are joining a sports to, for something to do.
- 48:23Absolutely. Yeah.
- 48:23That that Rings true for u.s. and Canadian kids then that's,
- 48:27that's true. Yeah.
- 48:28Nah, Nothin Wrong with that. Actually it's that's good.
- 48:31So what Like, if you had a magic wand, how would you improve the
- 48:36Canadian? I'm going to call the high
- 48:38school side as it goes into college.
- 48:40And maybe it did, this question goes into the college side to,
- 48:43what would you change? Do you like prefer the club
- 48:46system like should do America consider more of the club
- 48:49system? Or do you prefer more how we do
- 48:51it here in the states? The club system really has some
- 48:54advantages because you can stay with them all year round which
- 48:56is nice. And then that way you're working
- 48:59with like the same coach all year round and not bounce it
- 49:01from one Coast to the next. The the state system has
- 49:05advantages to just because like nicer weather tracks are like
- 49:08everywhere. We had the closest track to
- 49:11where we're at right now, is 45 minutes.
- 49:15Wow. Yeah, closes.
- 49:16Nice track is going to be like an hour and 15.
- 49:22It took me four years to get rings built where I live.
- 49:26And that was part of this. The Rings.
- 49:30Yes, because the where I live, the high school and college
- 49:33share grounds. It There's three heads, I have
- 49:34to talk to in order to get things approved.
- 49:39So even like getting the cage, it's on my to-do list.
- 49:41But I did fundraising for these rings to happen is like four
- 49:43thousand dollars for like the Rings to get poured.
- 49:46And for the, the hammer ring insert the toe board, and I did
- 49:49the bolt down method for my rings because it was cheaper at
- 49:52the time. Like, I still works well but
- 49:55like I just that's what I could do at the time with the what I
- 49:59had and I was fundraising with one babe and you know, car seat
- 50:03and going around. And town and trying to get get
- 50:05stuff. And my next plans are a lot more
- 50:08money. Like getting a cade in an actual
- 50:10shot, puts Factor set up in Shale and everything, right?
- 50:15A lot more approval involved because in groundskeeping has to
- 50:17work around the cage. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:20Yeah, absolutely. And Club system, we don't have a
- 50:25whole lot of money. So, one advantage with the
- 50:29school system is, they'll get money from all the other school
- 50:31sports happening, and the school sports are huge schools down.
- 50:35The state's like Tulsa has jinx. It has Union or they've got huge
- 50:40football programs that can pay for stadiums and tracks.
- 50:44Yeah, and we could really use that.
- 50:47We need need more tracks. We need more stadiums, we need
- 50:50indoor tracks. We have one indoor track that
- 50:52everybody uses an Alberta, hmm. And then a partial indoor track
- 50:57that we try to use, but they don't like us using, cuz it's
- 51:00right next to the Olympic Oval, and somebody threw a weight on
- 51:02the Olympic Oval one year and broke the ice.
- 51:05Oh, that feels like a sin in Canada.
- 51:09Yes, yes. Because it's like, it's actually
- 51:11one of the Olympic training centers and it's like, you know,
- 51:13big chunk ice for them. It's getting us.
- 51:16Yeah, that feels like the equivalent of you messed up the
- 51:19football teams playing Ground like, you know, you threw a
- 51:21hammer in the field. Yeah.
- 51:24Like did that person get deported?
- 51:25I feel like that person lives in America.
- 51:26Now they're the reason that wait, there is no longer allowed
- 51:29in there, but Yeah, so we need we need more of the dedicated
- 51:38facilities and it's hard to get track taken seriously when you
- 51:41can't build the facilities, but it's at the same time you can't
- 51:43build the facilities without it being taken.
- 51:45Seriously taken an egg. Yeah, kind of thing.
- 51:48Yeah, we say chicken egg what do they say in Canada like syrup
- 51:52and maple tree or something that I probably just defended every
- 51:56Canadian that's listening right now.
- 51:58I'm so sick of every Canadian laughter that does themselves
- 52:02with the whole maple syrup joke. Okay guys, who went there?
- 52:06I watched a fascinating documentary on maple syrup, and
- 52:10I never thought that for much of documentary, but they were like,
- 52:13maple syrup Mafia wars. Basically on how you procure,
- 52:17the syrup and the land, and how you sell it, how you put it to
- 52:21the market, there's a whole Black Market.
- 52:23It was there was more to syrup than I thought, then just
- 52:27pancakes and French toast to be honest with you.
- 52:28Yeah. There's feel especially like
- 52:31more East Coast Ontario area like When you go out there every
- 52:35store is got maple syrup and it's like fresh locally, sourced
- 52:39maple syrup. I love it.
- 52:43Well Rachel you know one of the things we you know talked about
- 52:45a little bit here at the beginning of the episode we
- 52:48talked about your motherhood and you know one of the cool things
- 52:51and it's kind of just a cool thing just in general to see
- 52:55kids being introduced and involved in the sport of track
- 52:59and field and specifically throws watching your kids at
- 53:02practice. You know you have them at
- 53:04Practice you. You had them at practice before
- 53:06they were born. You did a quite extensive
- 53:09training. I don't know how far into the
- 53:12pregnancy but very far, I know up to it.
- 53:17What does it mean to you to be able to have your kids involved
- 53:20in one of your obviously many passions and talents there?
- 53:24But what's that mean to you? To have them involved from?
- 53:27Not even day one before day one. Well, I've really enjoyed being
- 53:31able to introduce them to track. I hope they want.
- 53:34To take on track. It's not something I want to
- 53:36really push, but it's kind of hard for them not to get it into
- 53:40every part of their system. When they are coming out the
- 53:42track breakfast with me, five days a week when it's nice
- 53:45enough. My son like his technique in
- 53:50Javelin and discus particular is better than most of my high
- 53:53school kids, really they start like a 600 gram Javelin, like,
- 53:58you know, 12 meters which is pretty good because In this
- 54:06case, he's got his proper little hand flip and like, held try
- 54:09doing a spin, so he's picking up on things and every once in a
- 54:14while, now, he'll be like, Mom can you coach me?
- 54:16And I was like, oh yes, I can definitely put you.
- 54:19You were right? I will.
- 54:21Yeah, and then 20 minutes later I'm giving him a little
- 54:23pointers. No Mom.
- 54:24I'm done being coached right now.
- 54:25I'm just gonna throw things. Hey, that's good.
- 54:29If you can abide by that right now because you know, you don't
- 54:33want to Push and but it's, I know it has to be hard on Ali,
- 54:36throw something you're like, yeah.
- 54:37But if you would just just do this.
- 54:41I live a little pointers here and there, but I definitely
- 54:43don't want to push. I want it to be if he wants to
- 54:45get into it. I wanted to be something he
- 54:46wants to do. I feel like I could make my kids
- 54:50like phenomenal. Like, if you look at Jason
- 54:52tongues and be, although have his girls grow up with discus
- 54:55and what they have done, I feel like that's what my kids could
- 54:58be doing if they want to get into it.
- 55:00Yeah, there's certainly a lot of great examples of lineage a out
- 55:04there from you mentioned, the Tonks, I think of the cantwell's
- 55:08kapos, and of course, going back to the Krauser's and the
- 55:13Skipper's, you know, families that were just, you know, their
- 55:15whole families were throwing I think for to work for your kids,
- 55:18we got to get the husband on board.
- 55:19There's some Masters track. He can, it's not too late.
- 55:22I think you can get out there. Yeah, this is not his Jam like
- 55:27it. He prefers biking which I'm like
- 55:28that's cool. Like, do the mountain biking
- 55:30thing and yeah. Yeah, it's clear.
- 55:33They get different things. Like it's nice with us because
- 55:36we are two different spectrums. So they get a good balance of
- 55:39lots of different things in life, more than just like sports
- 55:41world with me or computer world. Yeah.
- 55:45Right. And what, you know we talked
- 55:47about that's more like the athletic side of you know you
- 55:50being out there and throwing the kids see in you and things like
- 55:53that. How do you don't know handle or
- 55:57deal or just do maybe do is the right word.
- 56:01How do you cope? While the kids are going to call
- 56:04it around but they're never not around.
- 56:06Even if they're not with you there, in your mind, space, your
- 56:09mom for crying out loud. How do you handle coaching as a
- 56:12mother of two? Well, like the whole having the
- 56:15kids around, I think I only had a very short period where I
- 56:18didn't get to have to have a kid with me because my husband would
- 56:22come pick my son up and take him somewhere.
- 56:24But now I'm at the point with a nursing baby that she's with me
- 56:27all the time. So I've got at least one at all
- 56:29times and my athletes that I work with kind of get used to
- 56:33me, starting a sentence and then going to a kid for a second,
- 56:36then finishing the sentence because you get distracted.
- 56:40So often my son, when he's out of practice, he's yelling for
- 56:43mom to watch something normally climbing the foul pole, over the
- 56:46baseball field. Mice saw a picture of that.
- 56:49I'm not sure if someone who makes foul poles, I'm not sure I
- 56:51can condone that. I love the free spirit in this.
- 56:54But yeah, I'm like if you get stuck up there, I'm not coming
- 56:59up because it's not going to Bear my weight.
- 57:01It will break. So yeah, like it's a pretty
- 57:06heavy duty foul pole but I'm still like it won't hold me and
- 57:09I'm kind of surprised that holds you looked like he just shimmied
- 57:13right on up. He doesn't constantly, I
- 57:15practice like it. Go up there. 12 15 times and
- 57:18show everybody stick a hat up there, and be like my hat stuck,
- 57:21and then be a down at the bottom and Shake It Up.
- 57:25All right, so he's got humor to that's great.
- 57:28Got his daddy sense of humor on that one?
- 57:31The physical humor. I don't know how my hat stuck.
- 57:36That's great, that's great. Have you noticed, you know,
- 57:41you've been coached by, you've been coached by people who don't
- 57:46have kids around. And now you are coaching as
- 57:49someone that with kids around. Have you noticed, any positives?
- 57:54Not necessarily to the kids being there specifically
- 57:58although there might be but to your demeanor your style of
- 58:03coaching your style of interacting with the kids as
- 58:06their Ben benefits received from becoming a mother and still
- 58:10being a coach. Well, I think it's been
- 58:13inspirational for the kids I know when I was younger as an
- 58:16athlete I was told you know once you have kids you're sporting
- 58:18careers over, you are done until those kids graduate high school,
- 58:22your you can't do anything else. And so I think it's shown on a
- 58:27lot of people that yes you can continue doing stuff, it's not
- 58:29necessarily easy. You just have to figure out a
- 58:31new routine of what looks like you're normal.
- 58:35And I know it was for the for the females especially, they've
- 58:39been more inspired by it and some of the Masters athletes who
- 58:44are like I did this whole kid thing and I dropped out of
- 58:46sports for 15 years and you're over here showing that you don't
- 58:50have to. But I got to say that, it, it
- 58:55really helps to have a support system because my husband is
- 58:57very supportive of this whole thing and I do remote work for
- 59:01most of my work when I make money.
- 59:03So I'll do my work in the evenings like after The kids are
- 59:05in bed or in between track needs and things.
- 59:08It's harder for me to do the structured work anymore with
- 59:10kids. I've had this one with me on
- 59:13painting and I've had my son with me painting and like
- 59:15backpacking them while painting and doing rolling and stuff and
- 59:18it's hard and I work slower. Sure.
- 59:22Yeah. That's what's taking them
- 59:23strapped on your back. That's kind of a picture.
- 59:25I had their. Yeah, but it's actually funny
- 59:27when you say like thinking back to when my head coach Brown back
- 59:30in college, his kids were about the same age as my Are now and
- 59:36I'm about his same age as when he was coaching me and he would
- 59:40bring his kids out of practice every once in a while, like
- 59:42because his wife would work later.
- 59:44And so I'd have his, you know, three or four year old helping
- 59:47me pick up my discourses and crazy to think hit that three or
- 59:51four year old is now 18. But that's right.
- 59:57And, you know, Rachel knowing that every situation is
- 1:00:00different. You know, you being a mom and
- 1:00:02where your coaching and your career is different Than like, I
- 1:00:06think of Gil podcast. Alum look teacher Stewart, I
- 1:00:08think the kedra Hayes. Now, think she just got married,
- 1:00:12who recently had a child and coaching High School track and
- 1:00:16field down in Texas? That's different that there's no
- 1:00:18same comparison just because you're a mom or just because
- 1:00:20you're in coaching track and field so knowing that your
- 1:00:23situation is unique to you. What advice, you know, we talked
- 1:00:28in the past here on the podcast with men and women both about
- 1:00:33you know how to increase. Women in coaching, you know,
- 1:00:36it's it's roughly 50/50 on the participation side as far as
- 1:00:40athlete. There's roughly 50 percent
- 1:00:42women, 50 percent Men And yet when you go into coaching and
- 1:00:45you brought up a great staff that I'd like for you to discuss
- 1:00:48to, but when you get into coaching, it certainly is much
- 1:00:52less. I mean they're you know, if you
- 1:00:56look at even just our list of 200 and something coaches, we've
- 1:01:00had here. We're pretty reflective of what
- 1:01:02the coaching Market is. There's not a lot of women on
- 1:01:04our podcast. Cast, because there's not a lot
- 1:01:06of women in coaching. What do you what?
- 1:01:10I don't know, advice, recommendation encouragement,
- 1:01:14what would you have two other women who either are not wanting
- 1:01:19to start a family because they feel like it'll stop coaching or
- 1:01:23feel like because I do have a family I can't coach.
- 1:01:27What might you say to them? Well, I think with coaching it's
- 1:01:31more like you you're in business for yourself, kind of thing, you
- 1:01:34can take your kids along. It may not be your most ideal
- 1:01:37thing, but you can bring them here in Canada.
- 1:01:42They've really been doing a movement to get more women in
- 1:01:45coaching. They did a census and it's about
- 1:01:495050 for women and men at the Grassroots level, but the higher
- 1:01:53you get the fewer women we get and at the very top level, like
- 1:01:58Olympic coaches, like 8%. I think eight percent was at
- 1:02:01their High Point and there really should be no reason for
- 1:02:04this. When I'm surprised, it's that
- 1:02:06high just from observation obviously and I don't, I don't
- 1:02:11know what the efforts are in the u.s. to try to get more women
- 1:02:15coaches. But they're offering some
- 1:02:17scholarships here for women coaches.
- 1:02:19I'm actually in a mentorship program right now for coaches
- 1:02:22and I'm working with George at read.
- 1:02:25As my coach, she was one of our Olympic shot-putter 's.
- 1:02:28Okay, so I know that name. Yes.
- 1:02:30So it's nice to be able to become be a mentored by one of
- 1:02:34our women coaches that was at the higher level because we
- 1:02:37don't have very many of those. And the club I'm apart of is
- 1:02:41very unique in this respect because our head coaches that
- 1:02:45are part of the club Paula McKenzie.
- 1:02:48She was an Olympian bobsledder for Canada.
- 1:02:52She gots I think they got silver On her boss, LED team.
- 1:02:56And then my coach Kim cousins. She is another high-level coach.
- 1:03:01She's done a lot of para athletes and she's got a lot of
- 1:03:09able-bodied athletes to, but like she's one of the highest
- 1:03:11level coaches for throws in Canada.
- 1:03:14Hmm. And that's unusual that we have
- 1:03:17such high level female. Coaches on this team are head
- 1:03:20coach for the JD Development. Group is also female our head
- 1:03:23coach for He does is female, which is our young kids like 12
- 1:03:28and under you seen. Hi.
- 1:03:34We did get our code guests. Yeah.
- 1:03:40Those people do. They just point out me like what
- 1:03:42in the world are club is helping to boost some of those numbers
- 1:03:46of female coaches and then they're increasing our education
- 1:03:51as much as they can. Like, every year, the the club
- 1:03:53will help pay for coaches, education, get all the coaches
- 1:03:57up right now. Their goal is to get all the
- 1:03:59coaches to Performance level status, which is They used to
- 1:04:03have numbered, for all these out of five and I don't know where
- 1:04:05this correlates on numbers. But the next level after
- 1:04:09performance, coach is high performance coach, which
- 1:04:11basically means going back to college for a little bit, I
- 1:04:15don't have to call right now for obvious reasons.
- 1:04:17Sure. Do you think it's what's keeping
- 1:04:23women out of coaching? Do you think it's, you know
- 1:04:27there's a there's a lack of Interest component, I don't mean
- 1:04:31that necessarily here but what I mean by that is like like with
- 1:04:34teachers there is more of an interest in women that want to
- 1:04:37become teachers than men. Maybe nursing there seems to be
- 1:04:41more women in nursing than men. Is it that way in coaching?
- 1:04:44Is it just one of those things that's like, you know what,
- 1:04:46women just don't have as much interest as men in coaching.
- 1:04:49We track and field we're talking here obviously know I think some
- 1:04:53of it is the intimidation Factor where they see it as a
- 1:04:55male-dominated field. Certainly.
- 1:04:57And so we mentioned what I went into in college, I went into a
- 1:05:01very male-dominated field, which is graphic design.
- 1:05:04I went to computers, which was also very male-dominated, so I
- 1:05:08think part of me just keeps going in real dominated fields
- 1:05:12and I don't know why, it's like a male-dominated field and track
- 1:05:16and field coaching in general, seems to be a male-dominated.
- 1:05:19Good thing and so women just kind of feel intimidated and
- 1:05:24women in general, be like, oh there's somebody there already.
- 1:05:26I don't want to like, push them out right away.
- 1:05:30Sometimes were a little too nice, when they don't think that
- 1:05:34they have the qualifications. And this is something we've been
- 1:05:37talking about in our mentorship program, is you need to not sell
- 1:05:40yourself short, you have the qualifications to do this, and
- 1:05:43you need to go out there and help kids.
- 1:05:46And when you start thinking about it, as helping these
- 1:05:48athletes to Achieve their goals, we're getting more more women
- 1:05:52coming out for that. What can I ask you to speak for
- 1:05:58the other side? The guys, what can we do?
- 1:06:02As administrators current track coaches, who are male, what can
- 1:06:07we do again? I don't know if I don't know if
- 1:06:10encourages the right word, but maybe it is.
- 1:06:12What can we do to help? I don't I don't want to increase
- 1:06:18the number of women coaches. If it's just a fake increase,
- 1:06:21meaning like I'm forcing women to coach, they don't really want
- 1:06:24to coach but we need women but I do want to make sure that, you
- 1:06:28know, we are leading in making sure that women know that the
- 1:06:31door is open. Like if you want to coach track
- 1:06:34and field and your woman that potential is there and it's
- 1:06:38needed. So what can administrators and
- 1:06:41coaches do to show or make sure that the door is Is open for
- 1:06:47that potential for a female candidate.
- 1:06:49Well, I can speak to this. As far as what I've been doing
- 1:06:52even with my kids, like all have kids, start in ninth grade and
- 1:06:56then hopefully to 12th grade. By the time they get to 11th or
- 1:06:5912th grade, I put them into those coaching positions with
- 1:07:02the younger athletes. Hmm, the ones that show an
- 1:07:04aptitude for it then I'm you know, trying to encourage them
- 1:07:07to go into coaching programs to like keep going and pass their
- 1:07:10knowledge on. So I've had a few that have
- 1:07:11taken me up on that they like enjoy the coaching thing and
- 1:07:14find that, that's something they like I think it's something that
- 1:07:17we can introduce it at the high school level that's when they
- 1:07:19were taking all their leadership classes and whatnot.
- 1:07:22That's an aptitude that they have to get more women coaches
- 1:07:29into it earlier on and encourage the athletes that are retiring
- 1:07:33to become female coaches out there.
- 1:07:36But I think starting them young because I think that's where I
- 1:07:40started. You know, I started coaching
- 1:07:42high school and found. I enjoyed it, enjoy.
- 1:07:46Helping somebody else, reach their goals and throw far, the
- 1:07:49excitement of seeing a kid, you know, throw far was really worth
- 1:07:53it. And, you know, you've still got
- 1:07:54a deal with the down days and figure out how to do that.
- 1:07:57And that, that's a continuing effort.
- 1:07:59But introducing them early, it's just like introducing kids are
- 1:08:03only two sports. They won't know.
- 1:08:04They've got aptitude for it unless they actually get it
- 1:08:06reduced. Yeah.
- 1:08:08You know, I just kind of thought of something as you were saying
- 1:08:12that, you said that really well, because earlier, I said that
- 1:08:15there seems to be more women interested in becoming teachers.
- 1:08:19Well, if that's the truth and half of our attract participants
- 1:08:23are girls in high school level, well that means those half the
- 1:08:27men, I should say the majority, a good number, the highly
- 1:08:30likelihood of those girl track and field athletes.
- 1:08:33In high school are going on to become a teacher in some form or
- 1:08:36fashion. Well, that means that there's a
- 1:08:38high likelihood that there's a track team for them to be a
- 1:08:40coach at and we as coaches both men and women.
- 1:08:45Or hopefully doing a really good job of encouraging our athletes,
- 1:08:48whether it's in the athletic realm or the academic realm,
- 1:08:51maybe it's one more step. If we know of a, we're coaching
- 1:08:54high school and we have a girl athlete who is going to go on to
- 1:08:58college and become an education. Major.
- 1:09:00Maybe we need to add one more step of encouraging that, hey,
- 1:09:02you're going to become a teacher.
- 1:09:03That's awesome. You know, you kind of love this
- 1:09:05track stuff, you should really consider also coaching track one
- 1:09:08day is yeah, that's just kind of is you were talking as I
- 1:09:12connected the dots of some of the things I said.
- 1:09:13You said it's like, oh, maybe it's just just more
- 1:09:15encouragement of like, hey, this is a possibility for you.
- 1:09:18You did track. You might, you know, if you
- 1:09:20really, you don't have to. But if you loved it like that
- 1:09:22me. Awesome.
- 1:09:23If you helped out other girls to wherever you, become a teacher
- 1:09:26at, or become a professor, and we're going to just be a
- 1:09:29full-time Collegiate track coach as well.
- 1:09:31That's, that's obviously an option out there as well.
- 1:09:35There's a lot of, you know, men will start coaching early like
- 1:09:38most of my guys, I don't need to even encourage them to start
- 1:09:40coaching, like, they'll be at with me, for six months, and I
- 1:09:43like, I know this stuff. I'm going to go coach this kid
- 1:09:48and most of my girls don't just assume that I'm like, you can go
- 1:09:50coach them. You know, it's a cultural thing
- 1:09:55to it is what I used to say. I liked coaching women more than
- 1:10:00I did in men and the reason being when I coached men, every
- 1:10:04one of them thought they were going to win the gold medal.
- 1:10:06So I almost had to like knock them off their perch.
- 1:10:09It's like man, you don't even practice good enough to make the
- 1:10:11squad what he time, I went real well, but on the women's side,
- 1:10:15even though I had some highly talented, Ida 22-foot, 44 ft,
- 1:10:18long jump, triple jump or a woman and she ever They thought
- 1:10:22she wouldn't even make our conference.
- 1:10:23Meet them like your All-American.
- 1:10:25I think he was always building up and I enjoyed building up,
- 1:10:29people more than taking them off their pedestal if you will.
- 1:10:33So I think you know, that attitude needs to continue on
- 1:10:36from the get-go with our coaching.
- 1:10:39It's like, man, we need to continue to uplift people and if
- 1:10:42they, you see, aptitude in someone as a teacher because
- 1:10:45that's what a coach is, or someone who's has passion for
- 1:10:48track and field. I think maybe we just need to do
- 1:10:51a Actively societal better job of encouraging and building.
- 1:10:55The Muckle like, hey, you know, what's a possibility for you?
- 1:10:57You could be a track coach one day.
- 1:10:58That's, that's definitely, you know, it's Taboo, it's not
- 1:11:01outside of your right, you know, you're not not allowed to do
- 1:11:04that, and it's absolutely something that you could do to
- 1:11:06make Society. Better is becoming a track and
- 1:11:08field coach. Well, and I've got one girl
- 1:11:11right now who had the same kind of attitude, your girl did where
- 1:11:13she didn't think she was good enough and I'm over here trying
- 1:11:16to push it towards Legions which is our Elite high schoolers,
- 1:11:20like you 16 u18. It's Their Nationals and
- 1:11:23national team has paid for if you make the legion standard,
- 1:11:27like and that last year, it was out in Quebec or New Brunswick
- 1:11:31or something. So, it was a flight and hotel
- 1:11:33and everything and she's like oh I don't know if I'm good enough.
- 1:11:37Our provincial championships which are the equivalent of
- 1:11:39state and she wins all three events and I was like, I told
- 1:11:42you you were good enough and she hit standard in one of those
- 1:11:46events are there. Wow.
- 1:11:49And so, she ended up hitting standard and too.
- 1:11:52Out of her three events and almost hit standard.
- 1:11:53And the last one, the standards are set.
- 1:11:54So high that if you hit them, you're going to medal at
- 1:11:56Nationals for the paid teams. Because, you know, your they're
- 1:12:00paying for the kids and I want to just pay for the place by
- 1:12:03right. But it's funny because then I've
- 1:12:05got, you know, a boy who's over here.
- 1:12:06Like I'm going to break the National Record.
- 1:12:08He set marks out 65, and he's thrown pretty right now.
- 1:12:14The boys are not lacking in the confidence.
- 1:12:16Department are good enough and like she's the daughter of a one
- 1:12:20of our Olympian Bass. Football players.
- 1:12:22So she's got like Olympian in her blood here.
- 1:12:24Genetics. Yeah, I can't beat that.
- 1:12:26Yeah. Just want to.
- 1:12:27She's a fantastic athlete. Like I had one a few years back.
- 1:12:31That was another 14. Girls.
- 1:12:34I just like had all this aptitude and all these Sports
- 1:12:36and it's just like I see the potential.
- 1:12:39It's coming. Like we're going to, we could
- 1:12:41get full ride scholarships down to the States if you want to go.
- 1:12:45Hey, that right there is the superpower of a coach.
- 1:12:48The ability to see something in someone else before they can see
- 1:12:51it themselves. So the ability to see like oh
- 1:12:53man, your rat. They are you absolutely can have
- 1:12:57full scholarship, you can do this and then you got to deal
- 1:13:00with the how do we take? Just a little bit of that
- 1:13:02confidence from the mail. Sometime, just a little bit,
- 1:13:04don't even take it all, just to sprinkle back over here on the
- 1:13:08women's side and, you know, maybe the world would be
- 1:13:11amazing. I'm so proud and happy of you
- 1:13:13Rachel because somewhere, someone sprinkle the confidence
- 1:13:16on you to give you the confidence to go into your
- 1:13:19academic world that you want into.
- 1:13:22To the obviously, the throne world and that you're still
- 1:13:24throwing today. I mean that to me, says a lot,
- 1:13:27you know, we talk a lot about track and field being a lifelong
- 1:13:29Sport and you're actually living that out, even with much more
- 1:13:36other more important responsibilities coming along as
- 1:13:39we as we watch throwing. See, you just can't help it
- 1:13:42either, throw it, they just want to throw their own thing.
- 1:13:46Well, I think my grandparents were kind of once it's sprinkled
- 1:13:48that into me because they were super supportive of all my track
- 1:13:50stuff and like, always Asking about it.
- 1:13:53And, you know, I made it to the Olympics yet.
- 1:13:59Come on. That is awesome.
- 1:14:01I love it. I love it.
- 1:14:02Well, Rachel you are an olympic-level mom, and, you
- 1:14:06know, that is one of the most important roles that you have
- 1:14:09out of the many, many roles that you have of, you know, wife and
- 1:14:12professional and thrower and Coach mom, certainly ranks boy,
- 1:14:17if it ain't number one, I don't know what is for you out there
- 1:14:21and I'm just so thankful for first of all, for you being here
- 1:14:24today, taking time out of out of you're obviously busy schedule
- 1:14:29to see. This will be the podcast that I
- 1:14:31show the people when they tell me, they're too busy to record.
- 1:14:33I'm like you know what? She wasn't too busy come on but
- 1:14:38just so thankful again for your authenticity on the social media
- 1:14:42world as well. I think it's super super helpful
- 1:14:45for people men and women alike to see that, you know, there
- 1:14:49what real world is and guess what real world can absolutely.
- 1:14:52Be a part of coding in that real world as well.
- 1:14:55So I'm just so thankful for you Rachel.
- 1:14:58Well, I appreciate you having me on.
- 1:14:59Like, it's real honor and those not expected at all.
- 1:15:03Well, we have a common friend in this anti, throw something
- 1:15:08right. Let me talk about another just
- 1:15:10positive light in this world, other podcast Alum, as well.
- 1:15:14And actually, she is, you know, Auntie throw something.
- 1:15:17I don't know if you know, how big of a deal she is, but here's
- 1:15:20how big of a deal she is. Is out of the two hundred and
- 1:15:24sixteen episodes that we have out there in the podcast world,
- 1:15:28she is a top tenor, she is in the top 10 of all podcast
- 1:15:33episodes and I think that's a real Testament to her story,
- 1:15:37which is amazing, but also just our Guiding Light of positivity
- 1:15:41and love and reaching out and, you know, just care for others
- 1:15:45that she has. So, I'm glad we have that friend
- 1:15:48in common because that's a that's a good friend to have.
- 1:15:51Well, I'm speaking of Buddy, who's a good follow?
- 1:15:53Like, she's always got positive stuff going on each other up.
- 1:15:57I don't know how much time she spends his on Twitter but she's
- 1:16:00find all these people. The build-up and and shout out
- 1:16:04to so, thank goodness for people like top 10.
- 1:16:09Right? Exactly, exactly.
- 1:16:11Okay, well, Rachel thanks for being here on the Gill
- 1:16:13connections podcast again. So thankful for your time, you

- 1:16:33Yeah, here we go. Just keep throwing, just go a
- 1:16:37little farther back, just keep throwing.
- 1:16:38Okay. Nice.
- 1:16:39Throw and everything right now. I think the hammer the most so
- 1:16:42I'm in trouble. Yeah, I love.
- 1:16:45It's okay. I know, I know.
- 1:16:49Can you tell everybody bye? Bye.
- 1:16:51Can you say? Don't have that word yet but
- 1:16:55you'll wave her first word is gonna be like hammer, or
- 1:16:59something like that. It'll be great.
