- 0:00Welcome to Kid Cast Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:04facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:07Today's episode is all about some of the coolest, biggest,
- 0:10and most mysterious creatures to ever walk the earth.
- 0:13Dinosaurs. Get ready for a prehistoric
- 0:16adventure packed with jaw-dropping trivia and
- 0:19fascinating facts. Whether you're a Dino expert or
- 0:22just getting started, you're sure to learn something new
- 0:24today. So put on your explorer hats and
- 0:28let's stomp into the world of dinosaurs.
- 0:30Let's kick things off with an easy one.
- 0:32Here's our first Dino question. Question one, What does the word
- 0:36dinosaur actually mean? Take a second to think about it.
- 0:39Ready for the answer? The word dinosaur comes from 2
- 0:42Greek words, Deanos, which means terrible, and Soros, which means
- 0:47lizard. So dinosaur means terrible
- 0:49lizard. But don't worry, not all
- 0:52dinosaurs were scary or terrible.
- 0:54Some were gentle giants and others were as small as
- 0:57chickens. The name just means they were
- 0:59unusual and impressive, not necessarily mean.
- 1:02Let's move on to our next denorific question.
- 1:05Question 2. Which dinosaur is known as the
- 1:08king of the dinosaurs? I bet many of you know this one.
- 1:11It's the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex, or T Rex for short.
- 1:15T Rex was one of the biggest meat eating dinosaurs, measuring
- 1:18up to 40 feet long and weighing around 9 tons.
- 1:22That's as heavy as an elephant or two.
- 1:25T Rex had huge, sharp teeth and a very powerful bite.
- 1:28But did you know it's tiny arms were only about the size of a
- 1:31human child's? Scientists think those little
- 1:34arms were still very strong, even if they looked funny on
- 1:37such a giant creature. Ready for another question?
- 1:40Here comes #3 Question 3. Which dinosaur had the longest
- 1:44neck? Think about some long necked
- 1:46dinosaurs you might know. The answer is Saura Poseidon.
- 1:50Saura Poseidon's neck could be up to 40 feet long.
- 1:53That's longer than a school bus. Saura Poseidon was a type of
- 1:56sauropod, which means it was one of those giant plant eating
- 2:00dinosaurs with long necks and tails.
- 2:02Its neck helped it reach leaves high up in trees just like
- 2:05giraffes do today. Let's see if you know this one.
- 2:08Question 4. Which dinosaur had three horns
- 2:11on its face? If you guessed Triceratops,
- 2:14you're absolutely right. The name Triceratops actually
- 2:17means 3 horned face. Triceratops had two Longhorns
- 2:21above its eyes and a shorter horn on its nose.
- 2:24It also had a huge Bony frill at the back of its head, like a
- 2:27shield. Scientists think Triceratops
- 2:29might have used its horns and frill to defend itself from
- 2:32predators like T Rex, or maybe even to impress other
- 2:36Triceratops. Here comes another fun question.
- 2:39Question 5. What was the fastest dinosaur?
- 2:42If you're picturing a speedy Dino, you might be thinking of
- 2:45Velociraptor, but the real answer is actually Ornithemamus.
- 2:49Ornithomamus means bird mimic, and it looked a lot like a
- 2:52modern ostrich. This dinosaur could run up to 40
- 2:56mph, which is as fast as a car driving through a neighborhood.
- 3:00With its long legs and lightweight body, Ornithemamus
- 3:03was built for speed. Let's see if you can get this
- 3:05next one. Question 6.
- 3:08Which dinosaur had armor plates on its back and spikes on its
- 3:11tail? This Dino was definitely ready
- 3:13for battle. The answer is Stegosaurus.
- 3:16Stegosaurus had two rows of big flat plates along its back and
- 3:20four sharp spikes on its tail called a thagamizer.
- 3:23Scientists think the plates might have helped Stegosaurus
- 3:26stay cool or made it look bigger to scare away predators.
- 3:29The tail spikes were definitely used for defense.
- 3:32Imagine swinging a tail with giant spikes.
- 3:35Yikes. Here's a question that's a
- 3:37little trickier. Question 7.
- 3:39Did all dinosaurs live at the same time?
- 3:42It might seem like all dinosaurs live together, but that's not
- 3:45true. Dinosaurs lived during a period
- 3:47called the Mesozoic Era, which lasted for about 180 million
- 3:51years. That's a super long time.
- 3:54There were three main periods, Triassic, Jurassic, and
- 3:58Cretaceous. Some dinosaurs, like
- 4:00Stegosaurus, lived during the Jurassic period, while T Rex
- 4:04lived millions of years later in the Cretaceous period.
- 4:07So if you saw a Stegosaurus and AT Rex together, you'd be seeing
- 4:11something that never actually happened in real life.
- 4:14Let's keep going with another question.
- 4:16Question 8. Which dinosaur is famous for
- 4:19having a huge sale on its back? This one is a bit more
- 4:22challenging. The answer is Spinosaurus.
- 4:24Spinosaurus had a long crocodile like snout and a tall sail made
- 4:28of skin stretched over long bones on its back.
- 4:31Scientists think the sail might have helped Spinosaurus attract
- 4:34a mate or regulate its body temperature.
- 4:37Spinosaurus was also one of the largest meat eating dinosaurs,
- 4:41even bigger than T Rex, and it might have spent a lot of time
- 4:44swimming and hunting fish. Here's a fun one about dinosaur
- 4:47eggs. Question 9.
- 4:49How big was the biggest dinosaur egg ever discovered?
- 4:52Dinosaur eggs came in all shapes and sizes, but the biggest ever
- 4:56found belonged to a dinosaur called Hypsilosaurus.
- 4:59These eggs were about the size of a football.
- 5:02That's way bigger than a chicken egg.
- 5:04But even the largest dinosaur eggs were small compared to the
- 5:07adult dinosaurs because if the eggs were too big, the baby
- 5:10dinosaurs wouldn't be able to hatch easily.
- 5:13Now for a question about dinosaur sounds.
- 5:15Question 10. Did dinosaurs roar like they do
- 5:18in the movies? This is a tricky one because no
- 5:21one really knows exactly what dinosaurs sounded like.
- 5:24Scientists study fossilized skulls and compare them to
- 5:27modern animals like birds and crocodiles to guess some
- 5:30dinosaurs may have made deep rumbles, honks, or even cooing
- 5:34sounds. The famous T Rex roar in movies
- 5:37is actually made by mixing sounds from elephants, tigers,
- 5:41and even alligators. So dinosaurs probably didn't
- 5:45roar like in the movies, but they definitely made some
- 5:47interesting noises. Let's try a question about
- 5:50flying reptiles. Question 11.
- 5:52Were pterodactyls dinosaurs? Lots of people think so, but the
- 5:56answer is no. Pterodactyls and other flying
- 5:59reptiles called pterosaurs lived at the same time as dinosaurs
- 6:03but were a different group of reptiles.
- 6:05Dinosaurs are only animals that lived on land and had a special
- 6:08hip structure. Pterosaurs could fly and marine
- 6:12reptiles like plesiosaurs could swim, but neither were true
- 6:15dinosaurs. Only land dwelling creatures
- 6:17with certain body features get to be called dinosaurs.
- 6:21Here's a question that's a bit surprising.
- 6:23Question 12. What is the closest living
- 6:25relative to dinosaurs today? You might think it's reptiles
- 6:29like lizards or crocodiles, but the real answer is birds.
- 6:33That's right, every time you see a Robin, a pigeon, or even a
- 6:36chicken, you're looking at a distant relative of the
- 6:39dinosaurs. Birds evolved from small
- 6:41feathered dinosaurs millions of years ago.
- 6:44In fact, some dinosaurs like Velociraptor had feathers.
- 6:48So in a way, dinosaurs are still with us today.
- 6:51Now let's talk about some record Breakers.
- 6:54Question 13. What was the largest dinosaur
- 6:57ever discovered? The biggest dinosaur that we
- 6:59know of was Argentinosaurus. This gigantic plant eating Dino
- 7:04could have been over 100 feet long and weighed as much as 100
- 7:07tons. That's as heavy as more than 15
- 7:09elephants. Scientists think Argentinosaurus
- 7:12was so big that it probably didn't have any predators once
- 7:15it was fully grown. Imagine seeing a dinosaur as
- 7:18long as a basketball court. Here comes a question about
- 7:21dinosaur brains. Question 14.
- 7:24Did dinosaurs have big brains? Most dinosaurs actually had
- 7:28pretty small brains compared to their body size.
- 7:30For example, Stegosaurus had a brain that was about the size of
- 7:34a walnut. But not all dinosaurs had tiny
- 7:36brains. Some, like the Trodon, had
- 7:39larger brains for their size and were probably very smart.
- 7:43Troodon might have been one of the most intelligent dinosaurs,
- 7:46using its sharp senses to hunt and survive.
- 7:49Let's see if you know this one. Question 15.
- 7:52What color were dinosaurs? This is a tough question because
- 7:56for a long time, scientists could only guess.
- 7:59Fossils don't usually show color, but in recent years,
- 8:02scientists have discovered tiny structures called melanosums in
- 8:06some dinosaur feathers. These structures help determine
- 8:09color, and evidence shows that some dinosaurs were brown,
- 8:12black, white, and even had stripes or spots.
- 8:15One small dinosaur called Ankyornis may have been black
- 8:19and white with a red Crest on its head.
- 8:21So dinosaurs were probably much more colorful than we thought.
- 8:24Ready for a couple more challenging questions?
- 8:27Here we go, Question 16. Did dinosaurs have good
- 8:30eyesight? Many dinosaurs had excellent
- 8:33eyesight. Predatory dinosaurs like T Rex
- 8:36had eyes on the front of their heads, which gave them binocular
- 8:39vision, great for hunting and seeing depth.
- 8:42Plant eating dinosaurs often had eyes on the sides of their
- 8:45heads, which helped them watch out for danger from all
- 8:48directions. Some dinosaurs could even see in
- 8:50the dark. Scientists study the shape and
- 8:53size of fossilized eye sockets to make these discoveries.
- 8:56Here's another interesting one. Question 17.
- 8:59What was the first dinosaur ever named?
- 9:02The first dinosaur to be officially named was
- 9:04Megalosaurus, which means great lizard.
- 9:07It was named in 1824 by a scientist named William Buckland
- 9:10in England. At the time, people didn't even
- 9:13know dinosaurs existed, so Megalosaurus was a huge
- 9:16discovery. Since then, scientists have
- 9:19named over 700 different species of dinosaurs, and new ones are
- 9:23still being discovered today. Let's go with a question about
- 9:26dinosaur teeth. Question 18.
- 9:29Did dinosaurs replace their teeth like sharks do?
- 9:32Yes, many dinosaurs could replace their teeth throughout
- 9:35their lives. For example, T Rex could lose a
- 9:38tooth and grow a new one in its place, kind of like how we lose
- 9:41baby teeth and get adult teeth. Some plant eating dinosaurs,
- 9:45like hadrosaurs, had hundreds of teeth arranged in rows, and they
- 9:49kept growing new ones as the old ones wore down from eating tough
- 9:52plants. Here's a question about tiny
- 9:54dinosaurs. Question 19 What was the
- 9:57smallest dinosaur ever discovered?
- 9:59The smallest dinosaur known so far is a little bird like
- 10:02dinosaur called Micro Raptor. It was only about the size of a
- 10:06crow and had four wings, 2 on its arms and two on its legs.
- 10:10Micro Raptor could probably glide from tree to tree and its
- 10:14small size helped it escape from bigger predators.
- 10:17And now before we get to our super challenge question, here's
- 10:20one more fun fact. Question 20.
- 10:23Did all dinosaurs live on land? Most dinosaurs lived on land,
- 10:27but some, like Spinosaurus, may have spent a lot of time in the
- 10:31water hunting for fish. However, true dinosaurs didn't
- 10:34fly or live entirely in the water.
- 10:37Flying reptiles and marine reptiles were their own groups.
- 10:40Dinosaurs ruled the land, but their world was filled with all
- 10:44kinds of amazing creatures. All right explorers, it's time
- 10:48for our Super Challenge question.
- 10:50This one is for the ultimate dinosaur detectives out there.
- 10:53Super Challenge Can you name a dinosaur whose name means Swift
- 10:57thief, and who was about the size of a Turkey, covered in
- 11:00feathers, and probably haunted in packs?
- 11:02Think about it for a moment. Here's a hint.
- 11:05This dinosaur got super famous after appearing in movies, but
- 11:09in real life it was much smaller and probably much smarter.
- 11:13Ready for the answer? The dinosaur is Velociraptor.
- 11:16Even though movies show Velociraptor as a huge, scaly
- 11:19predator, the real Velociraptor was about 3 feet long COVID in
- 11:24feathers, and smart enough to hunt with others.
- 11:26Its name means Swift Thief because of its speed and sneaky
- 11:30hunting skills. That's all for today's Dino Mite
- 11:32episode of Kid Cast Daily. We hope you had a fantastic time
