- 1:09Tom Jackobs: Katie, welcome to the show.
- 1:11Katie Kirklin: Hi, Tom.
- 1:11Katie Kirklin: Thank you so much for having me.
- 1:13Tom Jackobs: Of course, and I'm really excited to talk to you because I totally geek out on nutrition and functional medicine and all that.
- 1:22Tom Jackobs: And so I'm really excited to talk to you about that specifically, but more also your journey and having a heart-led business and how you balance profit and being heart-led at the same time.
- 1:34Tom Jackobs: But first the question I always ask everybody is, what's your definition of a heart-led business?
- 1:42Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 1:42Katie Kirklin: So for me, having a heart-led business really comes down to alignment.
- 1:50Katie Kirklin: I have two little kids and so juggling, you know, family and my business is really, it's...
- 1:58Katie Kirklin: You know, at the core of my business, and it's also why I started a business is so that I have, the opportunity to spend more time with my kids.
- 2:08Katie Kirklin: And so it's just so important that I feel aligned with the work that I do every day and really honoring my own capacity for the work that I do.
- 2:16Katie Kirklin: And so I really define a heart-led business for me as one that's built from regulated physiology, from alignment and sustainability, than one built from stress, urgency, and burnout.
- 2:33Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 2:34Katie Kirklin: something that I really practice with my clients too, is there's a, quote by, his name is Alex Howard, a doctor who studies nervous system regulation and he says you cannot heal a body if it's not in a healing state, and so, I, I feel the same way about, you know, running my business, I can't run a successful business if I am not in a, an aligned and regulated state.
- 3:07Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 3:08Tom Jackobs: I love that, that, yeah, that's a really, key distinction, I think, for a lot of people.
- 3:13Tom Jackobs: And I think, and I haven't heard that yet in 145 episodes, so that's amazing.
- 3:20Tom Jackobs: The alignment piece, that we, that comes up quite a bit.
- 3:23Tom Jackobs: but the, you know, you can't run your own business if you're not regulated yourself and in alignment, so I love that.
- 3:30Katie Kirklin: I can't run a business that's going to be sustainable for me.
- 3:34Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 3:35Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 3:35Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 3:37Tom Jackobs: Talk to me about that alignment piece.
- 3:39Tom Jackobs: How does that feel and how do you know when you're not in alignment and just, you can talk personally, but I think people, we hear the word alignment and it feels good and we're aligned with our business, but how do we know, right?
- 3:54Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 3:54Katie Kirklin: That's something I focus so much on with my clients is teaching them how to really listen to their body and pay attention to symptoms.
- 4:05Katie Kirklin: And so that's something I have had to do with my own body and with my own decision making.
- 4:10Katie Kirklin: And if I'm feeling Stress, we will never avoid stress.
- 4:15Katie Kirklin: There's, there's the good stress, eustress, and there's also stress that's not so good.
- 4:21Katie Kirklin: But really paying attention to that stress, and if it is leading to burnout or even physical symptoms, so many people experience health issues because they're just powering through and really not honoring what their body is telling them.
- 4:39Katie Kirklin: So, really paying attention.
- 4:41Katie Kirklin: I love the metaphor of the frog in the boiling water.
- 4:44Katie Kirklin: You know, sometimes people build up symptoms over time, where they don't even notice that, Oh, having this brain fog every afternoon is actually not normal.
- 4:57Katie Kirklin: You know, you might think it's normal because it's your norm.
- 5:01Katie Kirklin: Like, let's honor that and really pay attention and look at that as an opportunity, as a message from the body where we need to pay attention and take some action.
- 5:14Katie Kirklin: And I feel like when we're making decisions in business that are not from this grounded, regulated space, our body is going to let us know if it's not working.
- 5:25Katie Kirklin: We just have to really learn to pay attention.
- 5:28Katie Kirklin: Yeah,
- 5:29Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 5:30Tom Jackobs: Yeah, I mean that, that's the key is paying attention, right?
- 5:33Tom Jackobs: With our bodies.
- 5:34Tom Jackobs: So what, I'm sure you've gone through this, so do you mind sharing like what that's felt for you personally when you knew that you were out of alignment and then what you did to correct that?
- 5:46Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 5:47Katie Kirklin: You know, there have been, I would say, I feel like actually my very best example is more in my personal life than my business.
- 5:57Katie Kirklin: Although I have had to pay attention to that in my business, but like one example in a past relationship, body was just like fully rejecting moving forward in that relationship.
- 6:08Katie Kirklin: And I was like, I really need to pay attention to this.
- 6:10Katie Kirklin: And, you know, on paper things looked great, but I was getting signals from my body that this is not right.
- 6:19Katie Kirklin: But I, I think the, the same thing can happen in business, especially when we start getting sick.
- 6:27Katie Kirklin: You know, we start having symptoms.
- 6:30Katie Kirklin: That's and just honoring that and not just brushing off, not saying, Oh, I get a headache every day.
- 6:35Katie Kirklin: So I just take ibuprofen and I go on with it.
- 6:38Katie Kirklin: Like, no, you shouldn't need to take ibuprofen every day.
- 6:42Katie Kirklin: I, I actually went through that myself.
- 6:46Katie Kirklin: I mean, as early as high school, I was getting headaches every single day and I thought it was normal for a 16 year old to need to take ibuprofen every day.
- 6:55Tom Jackobs: Oh.
- 6:56Katie Kirklin: Yeah, I just, I was like, this is just my norm.
- 7:00Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 7:01Katie Kirklin: Yes.
- 7:02Katie Kirklin: And it wasn't until I made some diet and lifestyle changes that I had, that had nothing to do with the headaches.
- 7:09Katie Kirklin: But as a byproduct, those headaches disappeared.
- 7:11Katie Kirklin: And I was like, I didn't realize that wasn't normal until they went away.
- 7:19Tom Jackobs: And.
- 7:20Katie Kirklin: And so, yeah, it, I think sometimes it helps to have a practitioner, you know, take kind of an objective look at you and help you reflect on your whole story, which is what I do with clients.
- 7:37Katie Kirklin: You know, we sit down, we, we look at their, their whole life story from their birth till up until now to learn.
- 7:44Katie Kirklin: You know, every, part of their story and how that is impacting their health.
- 7:52Katie Kirklin: and, and when we do that, it allows us to, you know, get kind of a 360 view and, and really, really recognize what, what might be going on for their body that doesn't necessarily have to, have to be happening.
- 8:12Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 8:13Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 8:14Tom Jackobs: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:15Tom Jackobs: And I think that's really great to get that history in there.
- 8:19Tom Jackobs: So then there can be those norm points where you can say, oh, this is normal.
- 8:24Tom Jackobs: This is not normal.
- 8:25Tom Jackobs: And now you can start to map that.
- 8:27Tom Jackobs: going back to the alignment issue again, I don't wanna drop it too quickly.
- 8:32Tom Jackobs: I know personally for me, when tasks in the business feel heavy and I want to do something else like laundry, which I hate to do, I know there's something wrong in the business in terms of I'm gonna want to do laundry and not deal with this, right?
- 8:51Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 8:51Tom Jackobs: That's a big clue for me that you know, something, it's feeling heavy.
- 8:55Tom Jackobs: It's feeling like it's like pushing a boulder up, up a hill.
- 9:00Tom Jackobs: And there's times in business that's gonna happen anyway naturally.
- 9:04Tom Jackobs: 'cause that's just business.
- 9:06Tom Jackobs: But when it, if it happens every day with the same type of thing then that's I, for me anyway, that's a time to look for, look into the business and like, why am I feeling this way every time I do this particular thing or this aspect of my business?
- 9:22Tom Jackobs: It's draining me more than it's fulfilling me.
- 9:27Tom Jackobs: And so that, that's one thing that, I've been really focused on in the last, like five years.
- 9:32Tom Jackobs: And it's completely transformed the business and it just feels a lot lighter.
- 9:36Tom Jackobs: And I know doing podcasts as well, a lot of podcasters I talk to, they're like, oh, gotta do another podcast.
- 9:44Tom Jackobs: Got, you know, edit it.
- 9:45Tom Jackobs: I have to do this.
- 9:46Tom Jackobs: I, and they're talking about all the backend stuff.
- 9:49Tom Jackobs: I'm like, have somebody else do that?
- 9:52Katie Kirklin: Right.
- 9:53Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 9:54Tom Jackobs: it's like, I hate, I hate editing, I don't like to write, I don't, like all this other stuff.
- 9:59Tom Jackobs: I have somebody else do that stuff
- 10:00Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 10:01Tom Jackobs: I just walk up to a microphone and talk to really great guests like you.
- 10:05Tom Jackobs: And it's, that brings me joy.
- 10:07Tom Jackobs: Now, if I had to do all everything else to it, there'd probably be only three episodes and not a hundred and forty-five.
- 10:13Katie Kirklin: Absolutely.
- 10:14Katie Kirklin: Absolutely.
- 10:15Katie Kirklin: And, and so you've done exactly what I'm describing.
- 10:18Katie Kirklin: You've identified, you know, what feels heavy and
- 10:22Tom Jackobs: Yep.
- 10:22Katie Kirklin: what really isn't feeling aligned for you and your problem solving, which is what I do with clients.
- 10:29Katie Kirklin: it's really cool.
- 10:30Katie Kirklin: I actually, have some experience with Six Sigma.
- 10:33Katie Kirklin: My
- 10:34Tom Jackobs: Oh, good.
- 10:34Katie Kirklin: my dad is a Lean Six Sigma guy.
- 10:37Katie Kirklin: And so I've, I'm certified in it.
- 10:39Katie Kirklin: And it's so interesting and in talking with him about how I problem solve with clients, it's really the same process we use to problem solve in business.
- 10:48Katie Kirklin: You know, first we have to define what, what the problem is, and, and lope and recognize those problems.
- 10:57Katie Kirklin: And then.
- 10:58Katie Kirklin: Measure them if, if we can, and then analyze which I, in the functional nutrition world, analyze, we assess,
- 11:09Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 11:10Katie Kirklin: through a really thorough assessment, then improve, make recommendations, and then we control and continue to track and reassess.
- 11:19Katie Kirklin: And it sounds like you've, you did that, whether, you know,
- 11:24Tom Jackobs: Subconsciously.
- 11:25Katie Kirklin: following that process or not, that's what you did.
- 11:29Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 11:29Katie Kirklin: think whenever we recognize something in the business that feels like a boulder, as you described, that's an opportunity to, to pause and say, okay, what is, what is the root of what I'm feeling here?
- 11:43Katie Kirklin: So this feels like a boulder.
- 11:45Katie Kirklin: Does it have to?
- 11:46Katie Kirklin: Can I, can I dig down and make some changes where I can still use this process in business, but make tweaks so it feels much, much more doable?
- 12:00Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 12:01Tom Jackobs: Yeah, that's great.
- 12:02Tom Jackobs: What, and a good process to follow as well, because I'm very much a process person, so, and.
- 12:07Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 12:08Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 12:09Tom Jackobs: So let's shift gears a little bit.
- 12:11Tom Jackobs: Let's talk about your business.
- 12:13Tom Jackobs: Gimme a, a, just an overview of what your business is and what makes it heart-led to you.
- 12:18Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 12:19Katie Kirklin: As you know, my background is in nursing, I now work one-on-one with individuals doing functional nutrition counseling.
- 12:27Katie Kirklin: So, I work, a lot of people come to me with different symptoms, or maybe they want to lose a few pounds, or they just want to improve their health, have more energy.
- 12:40Katie Kirklin: So I work with people to make diet and lifestyle changes.
- 12:45Katie Kirklin: So functional nutrition is my title, my certification, but that doesn't fully describe the breadth of the work that I do.
- 12:55Katie Kirklin: It's a very holistic approach.
- 12:57Katie Kirklin: So I help people, looking not just at nutrition, but at their lifestyle too.
- 13:03Katie Kirklin: You know, are they sleeping?
- 13:04Katie Kirklin: Are they drinking?
- 13:05Katie Kirklin: Are they, are they connecting with their community?
- 13:08Katie Kirklin: Are they moving their body?
- 13:11Tom Jackobs: Oh.
- 13:12Katie Kirklin: One way I really like to describe functional nutrition is using this visual of a tree.
- 13:17Katie Kirklin: So if someone is experiencing symptoms like maybe anxiety or overwhelm, or it could be a skin symptom, eczema, acne, or a gut issue, bloating, heartburn, any of those symptoms I think of as a branch,
- 13:37Tom Jackobs: Hmm,
- 13:37Katie Kirklin: branch of a tree.
- 13:39Katie Kirklin: And the work that I do is on the root level and in the soil.
- 13:44Katie Kirklin: So
- 13:44Tom Jackobs: Huh.
- 13:45Katie Kirklin: There are three, three main roots that I focus on, and those are inflammation, digestion, genes or genetics.
- 13:53Tom Jackobs: Okay.
- 13:53Katie Kirklin: And then we also work in that terrain.
- 13:56Katie Kirklin: And so what's really beautiful about this work is we're not necessarily targeting symptoms like it's not a band-aid solution.
- 14:06Katie Kirklin: We are doing this foundational work and the foundation, when you, when you shift that terrain as a by-product, those symptoms start to resolve naturally.
- 14:23Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 14:23Katie Kirklin: If you think of an actual tree, if you have a tree and its branches are starting to suffer, not going to fix it by just going to the branches.
- 14:34Katie Kirklin: You know that you're going to have to check out the roots and the soil.
- 14:38Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 14:38Katie Kirklin: And when you address that, and you're also addressing the terrain, you know, is it, is it getting sunlight?
- 14:44Katie Kirklin: Is it getting clean water?
- 14:46Katie Kirklin: Is it planted in the right place?
- 14:49Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 14:50Katie Kirklin: that's, that's really what, what makes a difference and it is, it has just been so incredible to see when we are truly focusing on that foundation, what an impact it can have for someone's health.
- 15:04Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 15:05Tom Jackobs: Yeah, I, and that, that's what I love about functional medicine and just getting to the root cause.
- 15:11Tom Jackobs: So again, you don't bandaid it.
- 15:13Tom Jackobs: And have to keep replacing the bandaid.
- 15:16Tom Jackobs: I love it when there's some, functional orthopedic docs that I work with and, like cortisone is a common, it's a steroid that people put into their joints to, combat the pain.
- 15:29Tom Jackobs: And it doesn't work for, longer than three months or six months, but it also degenerates the cartilage in your joint at the same time.
- 15:37Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 15:38Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 15:38Tom Jackobs: It's like when you ask somebody, what'd you do?
- 15:40Tom Jackobs: Oh, I had a cortisone shot.
- 15:41Tom Jackobs: And it's hurting again.
- 15:44Tom Jackobs: Yeah, it's, it wore off.
- 15:46Tom Jackobs: So why would you do it again if it's not gonna.
- 15:49Tom Jackobs: Permanently fix it.
- 15:51Tom Jackobs: Like you're just band-aiding.
- 15:52Tom Jackobs: And I was like, yeah, that's a really good question to ask people.
- 15:56Tom Jackobs: It's
- 15:56Katie Kirklin: Right.
- 15:56Tom Jackobs: why do you keep doing it if you know it doesn't work?
- 15:59Katie Kirklin: Right.
- 15:59Tom Jackobs: that's insanity, right?
- 16:00Tom Jackobs: It is doing the same thing over and over again.
- 16:03Katie Kirklin: Right.
- 16:03Tom Jackobs: when you like get the education and you know, oh, let's look at what the root cause is it's not even my shoulder.
- 16:10Tom Jackobs: It's my hip is out of alignment.
- 16:11Tom Jackobs: Let's get that into alignment now.
- 16:13Tom Jackobs: My shoulder's fine and everything works much better.
- 16:16Tom Jackobs: Yeah, that's, so it's,
- 16:17Katie Kirklin: There's inflammation going on.
- 16:19Katie Kirklin: What can we do about that inflammation?
- 16:21Katie Kirklin: Sometimes the answer is way more simple, too.
- 16:25Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 16:26Katie Kirklin: I, I always say that a lot of the work I do with people is, it is rather simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy.
- 16:34Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 16:35Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 16:35Tom Jackobs: That's anytime there's lifestyles, lifestyle change, it's never easy for a lot of people.
- 16:41Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 16:41Katie Kirklin: Right.
- 16:42Tom Jackobs: So let's talk about your business then, and so what prompted you to start the business and what was that process like for you?
- 16:50Tom Jackobs: In the initial phases of starting the business?
- 16:52Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 16:53Katie Kirklin: Yeah.
- 16:53Katie Kirklin: Oh, I feel like this business was so many years in the making for me, but I just didn't know what it was going to look like.
- 17:03Katie Kirklin: I, I always, I would say I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit.
- 17:06Katie Kirklin: My dad is an entrepreneur and I always wanted to start my own business, but it took me a while to figure out what that would look like..
- 17:17Katie Kirklin: So I, I got a degree.
- 17:18Katie Kirklin: My first degree is in kinesiology and health and because I was very passionate about nutrition and fitness from a young age.
- 17:27Katie Kirklin: but I didn't really see a clear path to starting a business or to just a career straight out of my undergrad.
- 17:36Katie Kirklin: So I went and got my, a master's science in nursing and I felt like, okay, nursing is a safe, you know, that's a safe, secure bet.
- 17:45Katie Kirklin: Let's do that because I just didn't know what else to do at that time.
- 17:49Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 17:50Katie Kirklin: I discovered is that what I wanted to do ultimately was not something I could find in a job description.
- 17:57Katie Kirklin: It was something I would have to create.
- 17:59Katie Kirklin: And so for a while I was looking for it in a job description, specifically in nursing jobs, but I learned quickly.
- 18:06Katie Kirklin: And I am so grateful for my time as a nurse, it is definitely something, a part of my identity now, and something I will always hold on to, but I learned quickly that nursing, for the most part, is, it is working within the conventional medical model, is, It
- 18:27Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 18:27Katie Kirklin: is, it is more reactive and we're caring for the sick, which is a beautiful, beautiful work.
- 18:34Katie Kirklin: But ultimately I knew I wanted to be working in the preventive space.
- 18:39Katie Kirklin: And so it didn't take me long to realize, okay, this doesn't really exist in the world of nursing as nursing is right now.
- 18:48Katie Kirklin: and so I eventually through my own health journey found my way into this more integrative functional space.
- 18:56Katie Kirklin: And, and I remember the first time I heard functional nutrition, and heard it described as there's no one size fits all and
- 19:06Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 19:07Katie Kirklin: in the body is connected and all things matter.
- 19:10Katie Kirklin: And I remember thinking like, Oh, this is it.
- 19:13Katie Kirklin: This is what I've been searching for.
- 19:16Katie Kirklin: Cause in my own health journey, I, I really believed in the power of nutrition, but I was always trying very specific.
- 19:23Katie Kirklin: diets like I tried paleo for a while.
- 19:26Katie Kirklin: I tried vegan and just none of those were really sustainable and they weren't, they weren't really addressing me as an individual.
- 19:34Katie Kirklin: but when I heard that functional nutrition there's no one size fits all.
- 19:39Katie Kirklin: I was like, okay, that, that makes sense.
- 19:42Katie Kirklin: Everyone is unique.
- 19:43Katie Kirklin: And the approach to helping someone heal through nutrition and lifestyle is going to be different for each individual.
- 19:51Katie Kirklin: When I found that, I was like, this is it.
- 19:53Katie Kirklin: This is the direction I'm going to go with my business.
- 19:57Katie Kirklin: This is how I want to help people.
- 19:59Tom Jackobs: That's
- 20:00Katie Kirklin: so, yeah.
- 20:01Katie Kirklin: And then it
- 20:02Tom Jackobs: cool.
- 20:02Katie Kirklin: you know, There was no looking back.
- 20:04Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 20:05Katie Kirklin: found the certification.
- 20:06Katie Kirklin: I think I signed up the same day and haven't looked back since.
- 20:10Tom Jackobs: That's great.
- 20:11Tom Jackobs: Now, what about the mindset of charging what you're worth?
- 20:16Tom Jackobs: Did you ever struggle with not charging enough and then, I can't pay my bills now, and then you like, wait a second, I need to charge.
- 20:24Tom Jackobs: What was the transition for you on the, on that front?
- 20:28Katie Kirklin: Absolutely.
- 20:28Katie Kirklin: That's been a progression for me, for sure.
- 20:32Katie Kirklin: I, I remember starting out, I actually picked a number that I was a little uncomfortable with.
- 20:39Katie Kirklin: And looking back, I have since more than doubled that number for what I charge my individual clients.
- 20:47Katie Kirklin: but I, I did feel, like looking back, I think I kind of needed to go through that progression.
- 20:52Katie Kirklin: Thank you.
- 20:53Katie Kirklin: To really appreciate the value I was giving my clients, and also I learned that as I charged more, I could work with fewer clients and I could provide more value to each client.
- 21:06Tom Jackobs: Yep.
- 21:07Katie Kirklin: I also learned that when someone is investing in themselves, They're going to get better results because they're, going to follow my recommendations more.
- 21:20Katie Kirklin: And part of that journey was also my own health journey when I decided to work with a practitioner on my own health and I realized what I was willing to invest.
- 21:32Katie Kirklin: And I was like, okay, if I'm willing to invest this, someone else will be willing to invest in themselves too, if
- 21:40Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 21:40Katie Kirklin: they believe that I am the right person to help them.
- 21:44Tom Jackobs: Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 21:45Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 21:46Tom Jackobs: No, that, that's good.
- 21:46Tom Jackobs: And what good mindset.
- 21:48Tom Jackobs: How long did it take you to shift your mindset and get to the point where you are today?
- 21:55Katie Kirklin: Yeah, so I, my business is still pretty new.
- 21:59Katie Kirklin: It's only about two years old.
- 22:03Katie Kirklin: I
- 22:03Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 22:03Katie Kirklin: would say that it has taken me about, I, I recently, I was kind of progressively increasing my prices.
- 22:11Katie Kirklin: I would say it took me about a year and a half to get to a point where I was like, okay, I think this is probably the max I would charge for the foreseeable future.
- 22:23Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 22:24Katie Kirklin: So yeah, it took me time and it took experience and really building confidence and proving to myself, okay, I can do this.
- 22:31Katie Kirklin: I can get people amazing results.
- 22:34Katie Kirklin: And.
- 22:34Katie Kirklin: And, also, know, it took some learning on my part to see that when I'm working with a higher volume of clients, I can't deliver the same level of service I can as when I'm working with fewer.
- 22:48Katie Kirklin: And so that was
- 22:49Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 22:49Katie Kirklin: a big learning experience for me, and that really helped push me to increasing my pricing too.
- 22:55Katie Kirklin: Yeah,
- 22:56Tom Jackobs: Oh, nice.
- 22:57Tom Jackobs: Good, good.
- 22:58Tom Jackobs: What words of advice would you give to somebody that, that you wish you would've had two years ago when you started your business?
- 23:05Katie Kirklin: I would say so.
- 23:07Katie Kirklin: I am so grateful.
- 23:09Katie Kirklin: I actually found a business coaching program that was very specific to the work that I do early on, and that really helped me get my business off the ground.
- 23:19Katie Kirklin: There was one thing she always said, and it was, take imperfect action.
- 23:26Katie Kirklin: And that is something I always have to remind myself, is take imperfect action.
- 23:31Katie Kirklin: You know, don't dwell on things that don't necessarily matter or that you can potentially change in the future.
- 23:38Katie Kirklin: Like even something as basic as my business name, I was like, all right, I'm not dwelling on the name.
- 23:44Katie Kirklin: It's, it's Katie Kirklin nutrition moving on.
- 23:48Katie Kirklin: And I was like, I could always change that in the future if I want to, just not being afraid to take imperfect action has helped me a lot.
- 23:57Katie Kirklin: I mean, if, if I hadn't listened to that and really taken that to heart, I would not, business never would have gotten off the ground.
- 24:07Katie Kirklin: Because I never
- 24:08Tom Jackobs: Oh my gosh.
- 24:08Katie Kirklin: would have said, okay, my logo is perfect, my, my messaging is perfect, my offers, you know, nothing will ever be perfect.
- 24:16Katie Kirklin: And even with, you know, I have a newsletter that I send out, and even with those, I could, I could tweak an email for six hours or for one hour, you know
- 24:28Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 24:28Katie Kirklin: and it's just like, all right, this is good enough.
- 24:31Katie Kirklin: It's going to deliver value.
- 24:32Katie Kirklin: It's not going to cause harm.
- 24:34Katie Kirklin: Let's get it out.
- 24:35Katie Kirklin: And just really keeping that mindset that, I mean, everything, it's about continuous improvement.
- 24:42Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 24:43Katie Kirklin: And so just being willing to move forward, even when things don't feel exactly perfect.
- 24:49Katie Kirklin: Is,
- 24:49Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 24:50Katie Kirklin: I would say, is the best advice I ever got.
- 24:53Tom Jackobs: That it truly is the best advice.
- 24:55Tom Jackobs: Yes.
- 24:56Tom Jackobs: So thank you for sharing that as well.
- 24:58Tom Jackobs: I've worked with so many new business owners and it's so frustrating when they say, I first have to get my logo, my website.
- 25:06Tom Jackobs: I have to get my LinkedIn profile just perfect.
- 25:09Tom Jackobs: I gotta do this and this.
- 25:10Tom Jackobs: And I always ask, how long do you think that's gonna take?
- 25:13Tom Jackobs: I don't know, like three months, four months, or something like that.
- 25:15Tom Jackobs: I was like.
- 25:16Tom Jackobs: How about getting a, how about getting a client like next week?
- 25:20Tom Jackobs: how about doing that?
- 25:21Tom Jackobs: Like you wanna practice, right?
- 25:23Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 25:24Tom Jackobs: how about getting a client?
- 25:25Tom Jackobs: I can't get a client without a website.
- 25:26Tom Jackobs: Wait, you can't get a client without a website.
- 25:29Tom Jackobs: What happened in like 1980?
- 25:31Tom Jackobs: Nobody had websites, still got clients, right?
- 25:34Katie Kirklin: I know plenty of practitioners that get plenty of clients without websites currently.
- 25:40Tom Jackobs: Of course,
- 25:41Katie Kirklin: All you need is a little PDF or,
- 25:43Tom Jackobs: yeah.
- 25:44Katie Kirklin: yeah,
- 25:45Tom Jackobs: A phone.
- 25:47Katie Kirklin: Yeah,
- 25:48Tom Jackobs: Yeah, a phone and an email address maybe.
- 25:52Katie Kirklin: yeah, that's actually one other thing I will say has been huge for me is telling people what I do.
- 26:00Katie Kirklin: You
- 26:00Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 26:02Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 26:02Katie Kirklin: know, if someone says, what do you do?
- 26:04Katie Kirklin: Not being afraid to, you know, it might be a little bit out of my comfort zone, or I know, you know, especially in the health space, you might think, oh, I don't know if I know enough.
- 26:15Katie Kirklin: What if someone's gonna ask me a question I don't know the answer to?
- 26:19Katie Kirklin: And just being willing to step out of that comfort zone and, and take that risk that it's okay if someone asks you a question and you don't know how to answer it.
- 26:28Katie Kirklin: But,
- 26:28Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 26:30Katie Kirklin: if you don't tell people what you do, then no one's ever gonna know.
- 26:33Tom Jackobs: That's right.
- 26:34Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 26:35Tom Jackobs: That's awesome.
- 26:36Tom Jackobs: Great advice.
- 26:37Tom Jackobs: Thank you for that, Katie.
- 26:39Katie Kirklin: Thank you.
- 26:39Tom Jackobs: As we are wrapping up here, how can people find out more about your business and you and what you do?
