- 0:00Speaker 1: It's New's Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent and Face the Nation
- 0:03Speaker 1: moderator Mark Margaret Brennan joins me. Now, Margaret, you have
- 0:06Speaker 1: new reporting on the state of the Katari mediated diplomatic
- 0:09Speaker 1: talks in the Middle East and what's gone on in
- 0:11Speaker 1: the last twenty four hours.
- 0:12Speaker 2: What do we know?
- 0:13Speaker 3: Sure? This isn't an American deal. This isn't. No, it's not.
- 0:16Speaker 3: It's an omani Iran deal.
- 0:17Speaker 1: So we're sort of watching it.
- 0:19Speaker 3: We're looking at the paper and saying, we can live
- 0:21Speaker 3: with this.
- 0:21Speaker 4: We can't live with that, okay, But that's to try
- 0:23Speaker 4: to revive the US Iran deal.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Them o MoU.
- 0:27Speaker 4: This is just about Article five within that MoU. This
- 0:31Speaker 4: is just to get ships going in on the Iranian
- 0:34Speaker 4: territorial waters and ships exiting on the Ohmani territorial waters.
- 0:41Speaker 4: But the reason this matters so much is it comes
- 0:44Speaker 4: down to Iran having as semblance of control over the
- 0:46Speaker 4: Strait of Horn moves. If they have advanced notice of
- 0:49Speaker 4: the vessels coming in, if they are as I'm hearing,
- 0:52Speaker 4: going to be allowed to continue to sell oil after
- 0:55Speaker 4: this is resolved, that gives them money back in their coffers.
- 0:57Speaker 4: There's a lot of concern from our allies, but this
- 1:00Speaker 4: is supposed to be a toe hold. If they can
- 1:02Speaker 4: get this one piece a toe hold to then relaunch
- 1:06Speaker 4: the talks about all the things that trouble President Trump.
- 1:10Speaker 1: We're going to get to wrongfully detained Americans in Iran.
- 1:12Speaker 1: It's important in just one second, but I saw some reporting,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and please help me understand how valid it is that
- 1:18Speaker 1: this omani Iranian thing has limitations on American and Israeli vessels.
- 1:25Speaker 4: So there Israelian vessels largely don't use the street performers.
- 1:29Speaker 4: The Iranian government said this, there's a lot of you know,
- 1:32Speaker 4: chess banging.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And symbolic ailable waving and things.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yes, and they.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Claimed as well in some of the rhetoric out of
- 1:38Speaker 4: Tearan today, the American American vessels could not go through
- 1:41Speaker 4: that now in terms of the chess banging, the President
- 1:44Speaker 4: also says that America already controls the straight of war moves,
- 1:47Speaker 4: but we're also in negotiations.
- 1:49Speaker 1: About right and dement is also real.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Right, So there's like a lot of misinformation in this
- 1:55Speaker 4: space what I'm told in terms of why there aren't
- 1:57Speaker 4: US military vessels escorting ships through something that might give
- 2:01Speaker 4: a degree of confidence. It's not that there are military limitations,
- 2:04Speaker 4: it's an insurance problem. Commercially, they want this hammered out
- 2:09Speaker 4: and diplomatically agreed to that ships won't be fired on
- 2:12Speaker 4: from the land or hit by minds.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Okay, how many wrongfully detained Americans are we aware of
- 2:18Speaker 1: in Iran? And what do you have new in this space?
- 2:22Speaker 4: So there are five Americans who are trapped in Iran
- 2:25Speaker 4: right now. Three of them are under effective exit bands,
- 2:28Speaker 4: meaning that the Iranian authorities are not allowing them to
- 2:31Speaker 4: leave the country. And then two of them that we
- 2:33Speaker 4: know of are behind the bars of Evan Prison, that
- 2:38Speaker 4: notorious prison known for human rights abuses. Those two are
- 2:43Speaker 4: designated as wrongfully detained by the United States government. One
- 2:47Speaker 4: of them is a nearly sixty two year old man,
- 2:49Speaker 4: Comrad Hekmati, who is ill right now and had been
- 2:53Speaker 4: allowed for a period to leave. He's back there. Another
- 2:56Speaker 4: is a journalist. His name is Reza Valis Aude and
- 3:01Speaker 4: he is in this prison, has been since twenty twenty
- 3:04Speaker 4: four in part for his work, and the United States
- 3:07Speaker 4: believes that they are wrongfully detained, meaning they're being used
- 3:10Speaker 4: as bargaining chips. We have not heard the President of
- 3:13Speaker 4: the United States say their names or publicly raise their cases.
- 3:17Speaker 4: And what is so different here major is that we're
- 3:20Speaker 4: also not hearing from the Trump administration that they will
- 3:23Speaker 4: confirm they've raised the cases to the Iranians.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And the context of all these other covers, in.
- 3:27Speaker 4: The context of all these things, which obviously the families
- 3:30Speaker 4: are upset about and want to hear more, there's some
- 3:33Speaker 4: disarray within the infrastructure that's supposed to be there to
- 3:36Speaker 4: support hostage families as well. Unclear who's in charge of that,
- 3:40Speaker 4: but when it comes to Iran, everything seems stuck over
- 3:43Speaker 4: at the White House right now. I received a recording
- 3:46Speaker 4: from inside Evan Prison. This is the second one I've
- 3:48Speaker 4: received from Resa Valis Aude and I want to play
- 3:52Speaker 4: some of it for you, please Weed.
- 3:55Speaker 2: The prisoners of Evan Prison have been denied access to
- 3:59Speaker 2: the prison library and sport facilities for more than a year.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Medical care in the prison is almost nonexistent. Only the
- 4:08Speaker 2: most basic medications are available. Even worse, many medicines purchased
- 4:14Speaker 2: and delivered by prisoners families are stolen by prison staff
- 4:19Speaker 2: before reaching the prisoners. The prisons doctors are rude, unmotivated
- 4:26Speaker 2: and lack professional competence. As a result, most prisoners avoid
- 4:32Speaker 2: seeking medical treatment unless they have no other choice. This
- 4:37Speaker 2: is as that were eradicated decades ago have returned inside
- 4:41Speaker 2: the prison, including pulmonari and gastra intestinal tiber classes. One
- 4:48Speaker 2: prisoner suffered TV symptoms, including coughing up blood and several
- 4:54Speaker 2: weightless for six months. He was sent to a hospital
- 4:58Speaker 2: outside the prison only when his condition became life threatening.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Before that, he had leaved in close quarters with other
- 5:08Speaker 2: prisoners for about ten months. No one knows how many
- 5:12Speaker 2: inmates may have been exposed to or infected with tuber classes.
- 5:19Speaker 4: He goes on to say that Cameron Hakmati was denied
- 5:22Speaker 4: chemotherapy he is he has cancer, and the running authorities
- 5:27Speaker 4: had released him for a period and then brought him
- 5:29Speaker 4: back in re arrested him. So there are two Americans
- 5:31Speaker 4: confirmed to be behind bars. Has spoken to both of
- 5:33Speaker 4: their advocates, and the US government knows about it. It's
- 5:37Speaker 4: important to let the public know about this as well.
- 5:39Speaker 1: White House may not say their names, we will on
- 5:41Speaker 1: this program whatever you have new information, Margaret Brennan, as always,
- 5:45Speaker 1: thank you so very much. You can watch facination this
- 5:47Speaker 1: Sunday at ten thirty am on CBS. Margaret Has a
- 5:51Speaker 1: Slave as always, but especially the Sunday of great interviews
- 5:53Speaker 1: lined up and clearly the director of the National Institute
- 5:55Speaker 1: of Health, Jay Boditaria,
