- 0:33Hamster with a blunt. Pen knife are doing quicker
- 0:35quicker. Welcome back to Hamster Blunt
- 0:37Pen Knife at the Doctor Who Commentary Podcast with me, the
- 0:41President of the world and my 2 slaves.
- 0:45Yes, Master. Yes.
- 0:47And now? Let me.
- 0:48Introduce. Let me introduce these slaves.
- 0:50Let me introduce peasant. 1 John Arnold.
- 0:56I'm I'm the miserable side of the site.
- 0:57I'm I'm the I'm gripping the chef in this in this case.
- 1:01Yeah, kill those spots now. And then hasn't to Mr. Joe Ford.
- 1:07Hello Sir, Yes, I'm just breaking some rocks over here.
- 1:14I'll I'll take you off your work break to watch an episode of
- 1:18Doctor Who. Oh, thank you Sir.
- 1:20Yes, Sir. Good episode, I hope.
- 1:23Yes, it's the I4S episode 6. Oh, an absolutely delightful
- 1:27episode at. Least it's the last one.
- 1:32Shot it, Peasant 1. I mean, I can't wait to hear
- 1:35where you're taken as next John off it's.
- 1:37Your choice. It's your choice.
- 1:40Peasant 2. You referred to him as Peasant
- 1:421. That's right.
- 1:44Did you hear that, Peasant 2? You're peasant too.
- 1:48Oh. Peasant.
- 1:48One you you don't get ideas above your station, sunshine.
- 1:53I'm the peasant one round. I'm the janitor peasant, all
- 1:56right? I'm the one who cleans the
- 1:57toilets. I'm the one who cleans the
- 2:00spuds. What do we refer to you as, Sir?
- 2:06The president. President.
- 2:08OK, Well, do you want to count as in then, Mr. President?
- 2:12And OK, again, because because third place on most listen to
- 2:19podcasts the past year on Hanford Bump Pen Knife is the
- 2:22best of three. Oh, I wondered what you were
- 2:25saying when you said that. Now I get it.
- 2:28Because at least first ranked it worse.
- 2:31Good job. Brilliant bring.
- 2:35It on next year things will be different.
- 2:38Three. Yeah, I'll have all three top
- 2:41places. 1.51 Go. Here we go.
- 2:50May I say, Mr. President, how superbly you counted us in
- 2:54there? Now hasn't to what do you what
- 2:58do you think of this title sequence for chance and I know
- 3:01we've talked about it. I mean, usually I like it a lot,
- 3:04but there's the sort of scratchy 5th generation version.
- 3:09They've put it on the BBC iPlayer.
- 3:11That means I can't really see too much.
- 3:13But I what you mean the fact that they did the unrestored
- 3:16version? It's crazy, isn't it?
- 3:19What do you think of that peasant 1?
- 3:22I would quite like it. I've always liked it since I saw
- 3:24it on the croutons. Unrestored version.
- 3:29It no, that wasn't restored version back in 1981.
- 3:33They didn't think of those things back then.
- 3:36What was that? The version of croutons till
- 3:38yeah. But what was that bizarre thing
- 3:40that they did? Vidfire?
- 3:42What was that? Yeah, it sharpened the picture.
- 3:46Allegedly they did those in mid 90s, I think 6.
- 3:55Let me have it. You don't.
- 3:56Really need it at once. Oh God, is there a Doctor Who
- 4:03episode without innuendo laden dialogue?
- 4:07Not only a wheezing. Podcast No.
- 4:10Quite right too. I mean, I I feel as if Zonda.
- 4:14Yeah, the name is worthy of Chris Chibnall.
- 4:18It's got AZ in. It.
- 4:19You know it's a proper space name varga as well.
- 4:24So we're saying that Christian is, is the Brian Hales of Doctor
- 4:28Who, of model Doctor Who. Oh my God, look, the whole
- 4:31fucking scene is. Falling.
- 4:33Oh, here we go. Is it?
- 4:34Is it Star Trek acting? You know that in the chairs.
- 4:40I like the. Fact that you get all those sort
- 4:41of polystyrene falling down, but most dramatically of all, the
- 4:45chandelier starts falling. Well, that's a very British way
- 4:49of doing this, isn't it? That's the crisis it it's the
- 4:52same as in Carry On at the Khyber, which is the same year.
- 4:57The very British way of doing it would be having some tea and
- 5:00crumpets falling over. Well, this is what carry on at
- 5:03the Khyber, does they? They have tipping while it's
- 5:07while everything's being destroyed around them.
- 5:09Oh. I love Tiffin.
- 5:11Oh, that's gorgeous. Isn't it?
- 5:13Maybe they'll have tea and crumpets at the end when it's
- 5:15all over. That's a very civilized way.
- 5:18No, no peasant, we're only getting bread and butter.
- 5:21For dinner tonight. Bread and butter, Really.
- 5:25I had better food in prison. Well, it's a shame you're not
- 5:32going back there at. Least they serve me, Graw.
- 5:35You wait. You see what I'm putting your
- 5:36food, sunshine go. Oh, shut it, peasant ones.
- 5:41See. They're still.
- 5:42Probably worth a long I tell you.
- 5:44I mean, at least now. The two leaders of their
- 5:46respective of the respective sides are communicating now like
- 5:51for the first time. But it's taken 6 episodes to
- 5:55get. There.
- 5:56Exactly, it just feels like they're delaying tactics all the
- 5:59way through. But if they did have an, they
- 6:02did have like a slot to fill for about 40 plus weeks.
- 6:08It's yes, but this is entirely kind of crisis manage.
- 6:14It's like, how can we make Dock 2 as cheaply as possible?
- 6:18And it's a case of. And it's.
- 6:19The and one big set, couple of small ones.
- 6:23And making it and elaborate it to make it Multiple parts kough
- 6:26kough walking ten parts kough. Kough Invasion 8 parts Kough.
- 6:32Kough War Games is a response to a crisis by a decent
- 6:37scriptwriter. Who?
- 6:39Yeah, but the war games? The war games constantly like
- 6:46gets more epic as it goes along, right?
- 6:48Every villain that comes along takes it to another level.
- 6:51Suddenly it goes. From the Second World War.
- 6:54The First World War to another planet.
- 6:57To, you know, Gallifrey and the universe, you know, it's just.
- 7:01The American Civil War, it's all the war zones as well.
- 7:04Keep that story moving at least gives the illusion of movement.
- 7:07Whereas this is it's all starting, it's all one place.
- 7:10Why the story stands in the whole thing anyway.
- 7:13Why is Miss Garrett shooting people now?
- 7:16Because she, because she's had enough of being forced to live
- 7:19by the script. Oh, fair.
- 7:21Enough. Oh, there you go.
- 7:23That that's the city review who in a nutshell, the doctor says.
- 7:27Victoria, we must be forced to take action finally.
- 7:33Oh, here we go. The Ice Warriors are on the on
- 7:35the base. The message on God here we.
- 7:38Go look at the one on the Look. Look at the big smiley faces on
- 7:41the ones either side. We're here.
- 7:50I think Vargo's like he's the money I swore isn't he?
- 7:54Where all the all. The makeups.
- 7:55Oh, it's Bernard Breslaw, isn't he?
- 7:57Was the big name in the Monsters.
- 8:01Literally big. He's so great.
- 8:03Look at his lines though. I will tell you what I want and
- 8:06you will give it to me. It sounds like Eddie, President
- 8:10of the world. Yes, yes, peasant too.
- 8:13It does. Oh my God, look, that fat man's
- 8:17just woken up. Oh no, he's dead.
- 8:19No. With a weird screen effect.
- 8:24And a massive shoulder. On head it's mirror long.
- 8:28How do you do that? Don't don't dare criticize me,
- 8:30peasant one. I will say what I want.
- 8:33Thank you. Peasant One, will you take us
- 8:35through the The Mirror long effect please?
- 8:39I'm not tech. It's I see.
- 8:41It's just a distortion of pictures running through, is it?
- 8:46No, I think, I think water. Liquid thing.
- 8:48Peasant 2 is going to take over now because Peasant one's
- 8:50struggling. Peasant 1 is a big old wank.
- 8:57The President of the world condemns you, peasant one the
- 9:02the. They they basically hold up a
- 9:04mirrored substance in front of the camera, reflect someone's
- 9:08face into it, and then just sort of wobble.
- 9:10It. Wobble it and it's yeah.
- 9:13But it's simple, but it's really effective.
- 9:15Yeah, it's like the Dalek in when they went to negative in
- 9:19the early days of the show. I'm not going to tell you, you
- 9:22know what those Ice Warrior lips look like, but it's really very.
- 9:29All I know is I heard that laugh from the other room, that's how
- 9:32loud it was. I mean, I think they've done a
- 9:36different makeup job this week, and I'm pleased that you're
- 9:40innocent enough to not know what I'm talking about, Eddie.
- 9:44All I know is it's probably something you'd really like to
- 9:47to go in, no? No, no, no.
- 9:51Quite the reverse. Quite the.
- 9:52Reverse yes. In in the in the words of many
- 9:55people in Doctor Who. I'll explain later.
- 9:57Yes, yes, yes. That's a conversation for you,
- 10:00your mum and your dad. All right.
- 10:03Now the birds and the bees head. Oh no, please don't do that now.
- 10:11Anyway, I'd rather think Eddie will be telling you and your
- 10:13mum, your mum, sorry you and your missus about the birds and
- 10:17the bees. Anyway, why are you not
- 10:19referring to me as president? Sorry, Sir.
- 10:23My apologies, Sir. Respect has to be that you ain't
- 10:28sunshine. Humblest of apologies.
- 10:32You're getting fight and stung to death after this.
- 10:36Hey, at least I don't have to speak to you ever again.
- 10:40Oh no, I've got to make all this.
- 10:41Place in the afterlife where you have to sit next to me.
- 10:45Oh. Shit.
- 10:48OK, so now look now why if the Ice Warriors come to the base I
- 10:54forgot? John, you don't usually get this
- 10:58far, do you? You don't.
- 11:00Get to episode. Six, you just sleep by this
- 11:03point. Well, I mean, look at it.
- 11:08This week I was wide awake for this.
- 11:10I fell asleep for both Twin Dilemma and Tariffs for Voids.
- 11:15Outrageous madness. Terrible ver voices.
- 11:17All right, I like terrible. Yeah, I I think terrorism ver
- 11:20voices because I had a lack of sleep could fine enough.
- 11:23I missed every single ver voices and I woke up at the very last
- 11:27trial so he. Didn't you realize, President of
- 11:31Earth, you've got a killer? On board.
- 11:34It's wonderful. Ah, Tonka.
- 11:37Travers anyway. So is he now?
- 11:42So I think Vargas here to try and figure out how powerful the
- 11:47ionizer is. Can it blast the ship out?
- 11:50Yes, and is is the is it a threat?
- 11:54Will someone? Make a fucking decision, please.
- 11:58What? Are your qualifications for
- 12:00existence? I'd like that one.
- 12:01That's a great line. Qualifications for existence.
- 12:05Existence. Yeah, that's very philosophical,
- 12:08isn't it? It's very deep.
- 12:09Yeah, I'm not sure I've got any. You know, I think about it too
- 12:13hard. I don't.
- 12:16A Doctor Who podcast is that qualification.
- 12:19That's enough. It's fine.
- 12:20It's fun, it's entertaining. That's what.
- 12:25You need. Oh, he was going to bash in
- 12:27Clint's head then, with his massive claws.
- 12:31Well, he's going to do something with those massive claws anyway.
- 12:34I could see a boom mic a second ago, I'm going to point that
- 12:38out. Even with that bloody awful
- 12:41picture on this. I said so.
- 12:42I thought you said you saw a boob a second ago.
- 12:45Well, I mean, you you're what would ever be disappointed
- 12:48watching classic who all right in that school.
- 12:52I mean this look at this trout with all this gubbins out of the
- 12:56out of the ice warrior weapon. That's great, right?
- 13:00Yeah, yeah, it's funny. It's making what could be a
- 13:03quite a dull scene. Oh, because Travis.
- 13:05Explaining how the gun familiar works.
- 13:08Yeah, which is great. Victoria is just.
- 13:10It's exposition, and this is how you sell exposition.
- 13:14Victoria is just standing there doing nothing and as usual.
- 13:19Insult Victoria one more time and I will make you go to
- 13:22whatever that ice forest mouth looks like.
- 13:24OK. How marvelous, How marvelous,
- 13:28Deborah. Walling You're not allowed to
- 13:30criticize Victoria Waterfield, sorry.
- 13:32Sorry, a pernicious performance from our Deborah Walling.
- 13:41Truly masterful Oscar worthy. Rarely in my life of I seen such
- 13:46subtlety and nuance in a in an actress.
- 13:48That's better. Just keep it up for the rest of
- 13:52the episode. You've.
- 13:55Got. About You've got about 13
- 13:56minutes to keep up. In all of Doctor Who, character
- 14:00development on this scale has never been seen.
- 14:03Exactly. Well, why is Jamie having a nap?
- 14:06It's amazing how much she gets out to one note.
- 14:10As a performance, it's incredible.
- 14:12That's right. She plays that note like a
- 14:16gooden. Steven Moffat wish he could
- 14:19write a character this good. Well, I mean.
- 14:22There, I do agree with you. Poor Jamie.
- 14:28I mean, he hasn't really done much in the.
- 14:30Last half of this has he? He no.
- 14:34Knocked out, Dragged along, Knocked unconscious shot.
- 14:39Maybe it's because they we are. He's not for the other stories.
- 14:43Might be very hard to week off. Could be.
- 14:47I mean, well, I mean look at this, look at this way.
- 14:50When Hart looks like to take week off, he turned into a pair
- 14:52of hands. Yeah, that was great.
- 14:55Are you sure he decided to take a week off?
- 14:58I think they may have decided for him.
- 15:01Yes, ever so Simon or he just turns into, I don't know, Edmund
- 15:07Warwick or and he always back. You know, there is a flaw with
- 15:14the format of a Habits of a Blunt Pen Knife, especially with
- 15:18a story like the Ice Warriors, I think, because I think it's a
- 15:21story that relies on you focusing on the dialogue and the
- 15:25characterization more, far more than the plot.
- 15:28Yeah. And of course, we're just seeing
- 15:30the visuals, which are very samey because we're in and out
- 15:33of the same sets all the time. But actually, when I watched
- 15:36this the other week and I was watching the dynamics, there is
- 15:40a lot happening here. Not.
- 15:43Far in the end. Not fast, but there is a lot.
- 15:48There is substance if there isn't pace.
- 15:51Yeah, I mean the the actors bringing the character actors
- 15:54was a big in a slow thing, wasn't it particularly was it,
- 15:58was it the plane makers I think was the one.
- 16:01Yeah. So he's going, he's going for a
- 16:04top arrange an actor as he can get on Doctor, which is not a
- 16:08bad idea. What?
- 16:09Was that sort of wobbly effect that was happening there, did
- 16:12they turn the heat up? Yes, yeah.
- 16:15Peter Salas just went here. Oh, you don't.
- 16:19Watch this as I send in the Sonic Noise 00.
- 16:22Look at that, better breast has given it something.
- 16:25That ice warrior, so did Coldenas, is trying to hold on
- 16:28to his ears. Oh God.
- 16:31Yeah, but he still looks happy. OK, so is that it?
- 16:37Have we solved the problem? No, no, no.
- 16:39Because the Doctors on the Ice Warrior space, the Doctor, look,
- 16:42the Doctor's got control. The Ice Warrior space, she was
- 16:44like, jeez, why do you leave the Doctor basically with one of
- 16:49your mates and that's it. So what?
- 16:51He fired the Ice Warrior Sonic weapon at the base.
- 16:58Oh, he's threatening it. Although he just did something
- 17:00because they were all, they're all falling about the place.
- 17:04He was, he rewired it, didn't he?
- 17:07It's. Very so.
- 17:08He's rewired it. Get standby for fireworks.
- 17:13Yeah, now he's just destroyed it.
- 17:16Oh, look at the state of that now.
- 17:18He's an arsonist. I wonder who's more?
- 17:21I wonder who's more in debt is more in debt?
- 17:24Governments or or Doctor Who fit all it's Access destroyed and
- 17:28all the vast spaceships. I mean, Trout and especially
- 17:33Eddie Wright, he's an anarchist. Totally.
- 17:36I mean, it's like, which is what you do.
- 17:37It's like almost every spaceship with Doctor touches either blows
- 17:41up or gets abandoned. So what?
- 17:43As the doctor, he's he's now rendered the Ice Warriors
- 17:47completely unable to defend themselves.
- 17:49Yeah. He did, but I think they just
- 17:52got up again, no? No, but they've gone back to
- 17:55their ship now. But he's sabotaged the weapon.
- 17:57Yeah, yes. So that's it.
- 18:00They've just got to fire the ionizer now, and they're all
- 18:02doomed. That's what they yeah, Or that's
- 18:05what they think. Oh my God.
- 18:08Now, now that I've thought, now that I've thought to myself how
- 18:10in debt he'd be for for destroying A spaceship, now I'm
- 18:14wondering how in debt Chris Chimeler for destroying half the
- 18:16universe. Yeah, well, who who remember the
- 18:23master who Chris did more of that in the.
- 18:25Christopher Ashburn did that as well.
- 18:26There's not much universe left anymore.
- 18:29Yeah, it's like, what? So destroyed half the universe
- 18:32in Lagopolis, and then half of that half.
- 18:34So now there's about 1/4 of the universe left.
- 18:37I can't believe it. How?
- 18:39Jolly does that Ice Warrior look.
- 18:41He's so happy. Alternatively, Steven Moffat
- 18:44destroyed everything but planet Earth as well.
- 18:47And then restored it between his memory.
- 18:50We we It's not Amy Pond's universe we just live in.
- 18:53It I'm not talking about that, all right.
- 18:55I refuse to believe that my existence.
- 18:57You thanks, Joe, Amy, you are. Important You're a figment of
- 19:01Amy Pond's imagination. You're.
- 19:03Right, it's a computational matrix.
- 19:07Yeah, she imagine she imagined you because she had to imagine
- 19:10some haters. Yeah.
- 19:13Oh well, yeah, I mean, you would, wouldn't you?
- 19:14Otherwise it life would be very. She's a benevolent God.
- 19:17She wouldn't put herself in a bubble of confirmation bias
- 19:20because she likes to fight, you know?
- 19:23Yeah, she looks. She's she's Scottish.
- 19:26Actually, I do think that's true.
- 19:27You know, I was talking with someone the other day about.
- 19:29Computer says no. Yeah, well, just like how it
- 19:33isn't healthy to put yourself in a bubble of your own opinions.
- 19:36It's literally the dot bubble thing.
- 19:39It's good to have your opinion, which is why when the three of
- 19:41us come together right and there's always one person, you
- 19:44should 2 like it or two hate it and the other person doesn't,
- 19:48that's good. It's why it's good, because
- 19:50otherwise we'd always be sitting there going this is great.
- 19:53That's why he works apart from season 7 where everyone likes
- 19:57it. That's right.
- 20:00Except for one person. Yeah, who?
- 20:03Who tried to put in? Was it in Burn Away if I
- 20:06remember rightly? Because I had to be interesting
- 20:09because frankly, yeah. Was anyone else going to be any
- 20:11interesting and was anyone else going to keep listening?
- 20:15If we if you had to sit through phrases, reasonings, I think it
- 20:18was perfect enough of me to actually make it interesting and
- 20:20bin something. Now look, I'll say you had an
- 20:22argument there, Eddie. But that did extremely well that
- 20:25episode, so people did. Listen.
- 20:29Oh, you're saying it's because you binned?
- 20:32Yeah. OK.
- 20:34Because it's a price to pay for listening to 55 Reasons about
- 20:38the Ambassadors of Death. Yeah, I think that's the only
- 20:41reason why so many people listened.
- 20:43It's because I had to keep coming back to the bloody
- 20:45episode. To get through that.
- 20:48Oh, he only got the reason #30. Oh God, I'll come back tomorrow.
- 20:53I wish I could have done that when I was.
- 20:54Sitting there, the look on your face was priceless.
- 20:58It was sort of sinking in his chair.
- 21:01And now speak. Speaking of phrases, that makes
- 21:02me realize we forgot to read out his comments at the end of last
- 21:05episode. Oh yeah, 2 for the price of 1
- 21:08today then on this one that's. Right.
- 21:10Well, come on, give us episode 5 now.
- 21:12We'll do 6 at the end. Sorry, I'm in the middle of
- 21:15watching the Ice Warriors on on my only device in here right
- 21:18now. I don't.
- 21:18Think you're in the middle of it?
- 21:19You're nearly at the end of it. Yeah.
- 21:22We will use the ionizer at 4:00 to control the glacier.
- 21:26Oh, someone's made a choice then.
- 21:28Yeah, well, 35 minutes from the from surviving it, Ed, it's
- 21:31fine. Oh, I see.
- 21:32Surviving. Oh yeah, this is what we needed
- 21:35was pen. Oh yes, I've just noted.
- 21:37Have you, have you stopped referring to me as your
- 21:39president? Yeah.
- 21:44Normal service has resumed. Yes.
- 21:47No it hasn't. Get back to work, peasants.
- 21:50You've you've been overthrown. Unlucky.
- 21:53I don't mind being a peasant. Actually, it's quite fun.
- 21:55Listen, I know what's expected of me in life.
- 21:57Exactly. I can live with it.
- 21:59That's probably the life of a retail worker are.
- 22:05You dissing retail workers, Ed. Yeah, you would have nothing on
- 22:09a shelf, all right? You'd have nothing.
- 22:10No food to buy. No.
- 22:15Just take it as a as a life advice, you know, to aim higher,
- 22:19all right? Well to aim not work in retail.
- 22:22That's right, yeah. Yeah, do what you enjoy.
- 22:27That's that's the thing. As long as you find something
- 22:29you enjoy, people, people you actually you can at least
- 22:31tolerate, preferably. Is that the case?
- 22:34Or maybe not then. You.
- 22:37Know maybe you should try and make a bit more money off the
- 22:39podcast so you can just go and do that instead.
- 22:42Oh no, I couldn't do this. Not this has to be for.
- 22:45Fun. If I did this for a living, it
- 22:47would be such a chore. It'd be oh God, yeah, you poor
- 22:51souls. You know, at least.
- 22:52It wouldn't be working in retail.
- 22:54The patron? No, I quite like it.
- 22:56I like being amongst the public as much as I'll whinge about it.
- 23:00Oh my God, look. At Clint, you're wrong.
- 23:02You're wrong. We'll all be killed.
- 23:04Killed, I mean. Is it me or is it Peter Salas
- 23:10basically trying to be David Mitchell there with the ways his
- 23:12party off to one side and that be it is David Mitchell?
- 23:16Why are the Ice Warriors having a rave as well?
- 23:18Did you see that They're sort of.
- 23:20Oh yeah, here we go. Party time.
- 23:23Joe, Speaking of patrons, did you forget the September and the
- 23:27monthly event? What's happening in September?
- 23:35Did you usually have like a monthly watch along or so?
- 23:37Don't you? Yeah.
- 23:40No, we had a meet up. We had an actual meet up in
- 23:42September. Oh, that's what that was.
- 23:47That's what that was, yeah. Unfortunately, my father is too
- 23:50reluctant to actually have us do anything fun.
- 23:53Oh well, next time come along. This time I'll put in the date
- 23:56for November, you know. Well, Ed, if you want to pay for
- 24:00it, I'm happy. It's expensive to go to London.
- 24:06Oh, I thought you meant for the Patreon.
- 24:09Oh, it's fine. Whatever that's good value for
- 24:13money, that is. Oh, thanks, John.
- 24:15Thank. You a president does not pay for
- 24:18him to pay for him. Oh, OK.
- 24:22OK. Well, at your decree I shall
- 24:25ensure there's a watch along once a month.
- 24:27OK, Sir. It's all right.
- 24:32It's Death of Daleks, an accent. So you've you've let yourself in
- 24:34for that. 1. My father would love to go to
- 24:40that because if you look at the 1st 2 cast members names in
- 24:43episode 3, their first names are John and Arnold.
- 24:46Yeah, no, no, it's, it's the the cliffhanger for Part 3 and 4.
- 24:51Which is. People to speak in the first
- 24:53John. Perry, John.
- 24:54Arnold, John. Arnold.
- 24:56Yeah, John and Arnold. And that and it's in.
- 24:59The weeks I realized that I was like, yes.
- 25:02I wonder if there's a John? Ford.
- 25:04Well, there's a Carol Ann Ford. Is there a Joe in any of those?
- 25:08Probably, but, well, there's probably a Joan Interstelle Song
- 25:14Contest with Caroline Ford. Yeah.
- 25:17Oh my God, I've just fought. Is there, is there an Arnold,
- 25:23actually the name Arnold in any Doctor Who stories, probably.
- 25:28Is there an Edward in the same name in the same story?
- 25:34Oh, trouble is, I'm not an edge word are.
- 25:36You are you. Oh, your name is actually Eddie.
- 25:38Yeah, well, no, it's Edwin, but oh.
- 25:42Edwin Now why don't you go by that?
- 25:45Because I just don't like using it as much.
- 25:48There we go, it's all over. We survived.
- 25:51If you had a posh name like that, I'll be literally berating
- 25:54as saying Sir Sir. I will be.
- 25:59Well, yeah, but then again, that's because you can't be able
- 26:01to do anything posh. He said, he said.
- 26:05He's so on Poshy that she has to borrow a suit from his father
- 26:08when he's going out for events. Oh.
- 26:11God sake, Eddie. I do at the moment because I
- 26:13think my doesn't fit me. Actually, I don't even have a
- 26:16suit. He's got one up on me.
- 26:18Yes. I don't even have access.
- 26:20Don't bother with suits, kids. No.
- 26:24So what? So what if you had?
- 26:26To go to Sam Neeta, there you go, There's a good.
- 26:29So what if you had to go to an event like funeral?
- 26:31You turn up in your retail work uniform.
- 26:34No, but I'll probably just wear a black T-shirt, you know?
- 26:37I mean, I don't think you need to wear a suit or a funeral.
- 26:39Just go pay your respects. I've got, I've got jeans, got
- 26:43jacket. It's fun.
- 26:44Yeah, never mind the funeral, I like the buffet afterwards.
- 26:50Oh, you're on. Anyway, let me get through the
- 26:52two comments that I need to. Ah, yes, go on.
- 26:54And then we'll do our three. Fabulous.
- 26:56Things episode 5 comment was It's a remarkably sophisticated
- 27:01story what seems on the surface to be a traffic club triangle
- 27:05between Clint penley and store is actually an essay on the
- 27:09theme of man versus machine and how much we should trust one
- 27:12over the other in today's AI world.
- 27:15Along with the ongoing climate crisis, this story is a
- 27:19president today as it was then. Back then, of course, you also
- 27:24had the Cold War ontology of the two sides, boys that mutually
- 27:28assured destruction. But you can see from this White
- 27:31House came back again and again. I actually agree with every word
- 27:36he said there. Well, frankly, at least you knew
- 27:40what every word was. I lost track of what I was
- 27:42saying halfway through. No, no, I think he made a good
- 27:44point. No, he's fine.
- 27:45He's absolutely spot and. Then sex, keeping, keeping the
- 27:50best to last. It's Dudley Simpson score.
- 27:53I'm sure by now Joe has wailed more times than Victoria on a
- 27:56vibro chair, but Dudley's experimental, ethereal and
- 28:00electric music I've seen that means electric or something is
- 28:05an absolute highlight here. Setting the tone and keeping it
- 28:10there as any other Doctor Who score screened the title and
- 28:12setting of its story as much as this one, I think not.
- 28:17It's far cry from the oboe of the week yet to come, but it's
- 28:21brilliant and shows just what he can do in his palm.
- 28:27Mark the date, folks. Fraser has made some good points
- 28:31across these six episodes. Theresa, you have Whale Bull
- 28:34Times Victorian Vibro chair. I was going to say, I don't want
- 28:39to think about what she's doing in that vibro chair.
- 28:42No good. Well, no.
- 28:43Yeah, you get a good example though when you see Vargas lips,
- 28:46so don't worry about it. Well done Fraser.
- 28:53Thank you for your comments. I do think perhaps you elevate
- 28:57this story a little too much, but not too much actually,
- 29:00because it's not in your top 60, so clearly you don't get that
- 29:03much of it. You don't get Champion of the
- 29:05Damned. Yeah, whatever.
- 29:07My house champion of the mid, more like.
- 29:11That's it. Well fellas, I mean we've got to
- 29:15do 3 fabulous things, so we'll have 9 in total.
- 29:19You've also got to watch Bake Off too.
- 29:22Well, I know I do. Quick, let's zip through them,
- 29:24they wonder. Where I am Well Jordan, would
- 29:27you care to him first? You'll.
- 29:29Probably think you're off having an.
- 29:30You'll probably think you're off having an affair with someone
- 29:32else again. Well, again, I don't think, no,
- 29:37no, he's not wrong. He's not wrong.
- 29:39Have you ever have you ever heard about his podcast
- 29:41Husbands? He's got Hareen.
- 29:43Yes, we we were discussing his podcast husband a few weeks.
- 29:46Ago exactly. Do you remember and?
- 29:49Wise, that's what A1 for each day of the week, you know?
- 29:52Yeah. And you could change up if you
- 29:56want not. For anything rude, I'd just like
- 29:59them to put my slippers in the oven, that's all.
- 30:02That's just one. Yeah, that's quite nice.
- 30:04Yeah, look, peasant one your. Fabulous thing.
- 30:08OK, I'm going to be fabulous. I'm going to go with Jeremy
- 30:13Davis, the designer here, because I think he does a bang
- 30:16up job for this whole story. It's that it's that lovely thing
- 30:20of the actual ionizer complex is integrated into that house.
- 30:25It's a large mix of technological and the old, the
- 30:30cake. The actual cave sets look good
- 30:32as well. Not much you can do with that
- 30:35Ice Warrior ship, unfortunately, but you can't have everything.
- 30:37So yeah, I, I, I think the design work on this is really
- 30:42nice and really helpful to the director and the whole damn
- 30:46story. So Jeremy Davis take about.
- 30:50Mr. President. To us, I've got no idea what to
- 30:53say right now. Can you go first so I can think
- 30:55of something? Yes, well I was going to say
- 30:58Simpsons score which is genuinely deranged throughout.
- 31:04But sort of dynamic and different and unique.
- 31:07And at a time when Dudley Simpson didn't really care about
- 31:11form, he just wanted to put weird sounds on the screen.
- 31:15And so that sequence where Victoria is running through it,
- 31:18it's like, it's like loads of weird sounds.
- 31:24That sounds like you're describing the ending of the
- 31:25Silurians episode where the Doctor just falls over with that
- 31:28weird face. That's a good point.
- 31:30It is weird like the Silurians. I mean it's got yes, more
- 31:33tuneful than the Silurians. That's just a weird kazoo.
- 31:36And at least the Ice Warriors appear in episode 1, unlike the
- 31:39Silurians. But there is not another score
- 31:42like this. There's not another score like
- 31:44the Ice Warriors. In the Sea Devils, that's what
- 31:46I'm saying. Definitely. 88 to 8.
- 31:52You're not allowed to evict the president.
- 31:54I'm evicting the president I've got, I've got the ejector chair.
- 31:58You're going out anyway. Too bad, so fucking sad.
- 32:02OK, tell us your thing then, Ed. The Ice Warrior designs are
- 32:06brilliant. They it's like they're in my top
- 32:11five monster designs of all time for a reason.
- 32:14It's like, so especially in the, it's like there's a 21st century
- 32:21version aside, which is even more gorgeous.
- 32:22It's like it just, it's just amazing.
- 32:27All the shells. I'm I'm not convinced there is a
- 32:30human underneath that, frankly. The silhouette, I think just in
- 32:35black and white, the silhouette of the Ice Warriors.
- 32:38And it's and it's tall and dominant and everything Joe
- 32:41wants a monster to be. And hairy.
- 32:44Yes, fabulous. Everything he wants out of
- 32:46someone. No, not a carapace usually.
- 32:51Thank you, John. What's your second?
- 32:56I think I think his name is Sam needed the lighting cameraman
- 33:00again. He does a really bang up job on
- 33:02lightning things. The the difference in the
- 33:05stature, the way he does the ice warriors makes them thoroughly
- 33:07intimidating, gets their silhouettes.
- 33:11It's it's just lovely. Particularly The Cave set.
- 33:13I think he does a lot to help the design of The Cave set and
- 33:17top Martins. Everyone I think for for all.
- 33:21I'm not that keen on the writing of it.
- 33:23I think on the production side, everyone is working their
- 33:26backside off here to make a good solid story and give you at
- 33:29least something to watch in the, shall we say, less interesting
- 33:34bits of the story. I for my second, I think that
- 33:39the casting is pretty exquisite in this Peter Bartworth, he's.
- 33:45Peter Butterworth. Barkworth.
- 33:49Oh, is it? No.
- 33:50It's Barkworth, isn't it? Barkworth.
- 33:52Yeah, Barkworth's a meddling monk.
- 33:53Yeah, I love the meddling monk in this story.
- 33:56Peter Barkworth, he said. It's, it's all right.
- 34:00He's just trying to wrinkle me. I'm, I'm, I'm getting used to
- 34:03his games now. Peter Barkworth is.
- 34:09He suppose, I think of all the intransigent base commanders,
- 34:12he's the most interesting. I like the fact that he's got a
- 34:14disability. I like the fact that he is sort
- 34:18of irrational. He's unreasonable throughout.
- 34:21But you sort of like him anyway. There's a bit of humour to him.
- 34:25You can sort of see where he's coming from.
- 34:27He's quite likeable. I mean, he has great chemistry
- 34:31with Trout and when he finally gets to have scenes with Penley,
- 34:35they're really interesting and you can give it that reading if
- 34:38you want. It's clearly not there in
- 34:39script, but you can. You can find that sheep if you
- 34:43want to. Yeah, I think he's great.
- 34:46But but also you've got Peter Salas in there as well who's a
- 34:50brilliant actor and and adds lots of his scenes.
- 34:53And I I'm won't that after that he went to go to the moon to get
- 34:57some cheese. What, like Wallace and Gromit
- 35:00cheese? Well, what's your second one,
- 35:04Eddie? Well, before anyone else steals
- 35:06it. Patrick Troutin as the doctor.
- 35:09Yes, 'cause I'm willing to bet my father would have stolen that
- 35:12next. So yeah, I wouldn't.
- 35:14You're right. Now you've got to think
- 35:16something positive to say about it.
- 35:18Again, suck. It I've just done 2 positive
- 35:20things. You've got to think of something
- 35:23more positive. I prefer, yeah.
- 35:26Yes, Patrick Troutin is the doctor, Amazing in everything he
- 35:29does. He's included in the war games.
- 35:33Yeah, even though the war game is only an 8 out of 10 at best,
- 35:38and the Ice forest is an 8.5 out of 10.
- 35:42Yeah. You are insane, Davros.
- 35:46Yeah, except at least the Patrick Troughton doesn't have
- 35:50to suffer appearing in Jenna's shit of the Alex.
- 35:54But yes in in it's like when there is evidently filling
- 36:00material, it's like he he works it so well that I can barely
- 36:03tell it's filler material. It just feels like it's him
- 36:06acting in socks often. It's amazing.
- 36:08I enjoy watching every second of him and I wish I could have met
- 36:11him, but unfortunately I was born about 22 years too late for
- 36:16that. Thank you, that's what I wanted
- 36:19to know. Are you trying to be salamander
- 36:23there? No, I was neither.
- 36:25You sounded more. Excited.
- 36:27No, it didn't. That was neither.
- 36:29It was obvious. Come on, John.
- 36:32Well, maybe the reason I didn't know is because I don't remember
- 36:34shit stories like Genesis of the Daleks.
- 36:37Yeah, come at me for what I'm saying.
- 36:38Who fandom? What are you going?
- 36:40What are you? Going to rise to him who fandom
- 36:43he wants a reaction. No, I don't want a reaction.
- 36:47Your favorite stories like James Scissor Darks and City Death?
- 36:50Genuinely boring, utter bollocks.
- 36:52Go fuck yourselves. Find a good and good story like
- 36:55The Armageddon Factor which was wrongfully voted out in the
- 36:59season 16. Strictly come hamster.
- 37:01I tried. All right.
- 37:02I tried. And for that, I ridicule
- 37:05everyone who voted it out. Yes.
- 37:07Yes, well. And they are, and they are
- 37:09banished from this planet forever.
- 37:11Well, Ed, I'm telling you a lot. I'm telling you about like.
- 37:15I'm taking them off like the Ice Warriors in the seat of death.
- 37:18I'm sure that if you were to find yourself with one of those
- 37:22people who rudely been the Armageddon factor on earth,
- 37:24strictly at some point soon you can have a word.
- 37:27Yeah, I'm sending him into the sun before he does that.
- 37:31John, please. Spin it.
- 37:33Before people are fascinated. Yeah, Season 2 is going to have
- 37:36one less person on it at. Least one season people can see
- 37:39what I have to put up with. Mass sympathies.
- 37:49I'm going to make the best of something.
- 37:50I'm going to go. That chase sequence in The Cave
- 37:53with Victoria, I think is really well executed.
- 37:57It's it's one thing Deborah Watling does only have one note
- 38:01in her performance, but in that sort.
- 38:03Of what did I say about ridiculing Band Band, You're
- 38:07going on the trip to the Sun, too.
- 38:09See, I was actually trying to give her a compliment, but I'm
- 38:12not going to say anymore if you can start.
- 38:14Performance, One noted that's making it negative.
- 38:17Before you jetting him off to the sun, do you remember he does
- 38:20fund your life all right? I'm the.
- 38:24President, you will need to find a job.
- 38:26I'm the president of the world, baby.
- 38:28I've got enough money. Baby, Yeah.
- 38:35Because frankly, that's the mental capacity that you lot of
- 38:38got. We've created a monster.
- 38:42No, frankly, this is the reason I was being quiet, because this
- 38:44was the whole thing it was building up to.
- 38:48John, were you done? Were you done?
- 38:50I'm. Done.
- 38:51I'm done. No, he has to elaborate further.
- 38:53I'm not letting him go until he finishes.
- 38:56I'm finished. I'm done now.
- 38:58Elaborate further. Last thing is going to be
- 39:03episode 1 as a whole. I think it is a superb scene
- 39:07setter. I think the introduction of the
- 39:10TARDIS coming down the mountain is hilarious.
- 39:13I think the Ice Warriors are well introduced.
- 39:17That astonishing avalanche sequence in episode 1, which
- 39:20feels like it is shot on a bloody mountain.
- 39:22It's it's an incredibly good scene setter.
- 39:26It establishes all the characters really economically
- 39:30and vividly. And it has a great cliffhanger
- 39:32as well. So yeah, I think it's a top
- 39:34notch episode one in a season that is generally full of top
- 39:38notch episode ones. They're generally full of top
- 39:41notch episodes, you mean. That's not what I said, no.
- 39:45What's your last one? Well then you're wrong, because
- 39:47obviously you have the slightly below average Tomb of the
- 39:51Cybermen. Then you have the pinnacle of
- 39:54the season, the Abominable Snowman.
- 39:56Then you have another amazing story in this.
- 39:58Then you've got the slightly downgraded Enemy of the World.
- 40:01Then you've got a slightly worse Yeti story in the Web of Fear,
- 40:04but still a pinnacle. Then you've got the awesome View
- 40:07from the Deep. And then you've got the slightly
- 40:09below average Wheel in Space. So obviously great season on all
- 40:12but I. Don't know why you're shaking
- 40:14your head, John. You created him.
- 40:17Yeah, yeah. I am not responsible for his own
- 40:20opinions. He has created his own bad
- 40:22opinions. Yeah, that's why Greatest Show
- 40:24in the Galaxy is rated as my second best story on Lesser box.
- 40:29Oh well, now you're talking sense.
- 40:31Well, no sense. Well, yeah, because that's
- 40:34obviously a horrible opinion because of Sophie Old for being
- 40:37in it according to you. Well, no, it's all right.
- 40:39We can get past that, you know, Just got too many other great
- 40:43things going for it. Well, what's your last thing?
- 40:46Excuse me? You don't get away with not
- 40:47doing your third. The TARDIS arriving and the way
- 40:50it does. What on the side like that?
- 40:55We need more of this. We can't just have the TARDIS
- 40:57constantly arriving at standing up, but do something interesting
- 41:00with it. So you've got that box there and
- 41:03all you do is just stand it up and leave it standing there.
- 41:07So do something interesting with it like the Ice Warriors did,
- 41:10bitch. I like to imagine, you know, the
- 41:12TARDIS, if we was in the TARDIS. Three of us.
- 41:14Yeah, that. As we clambered out of the
- 41:17TARDIS on its side, Eddie would be there with his feet on both
- 41:21of our heads, climbing. Oh God, yeah, of course he.
- 41:25No, no, no. Make your heads.
- 41:27Free for us. You, you kind, you're going to
- 41:30vanish it with me. On it, what would happen is you
- 41:332 would both be out of energy, crawling out and looking for
- 41:36something. Meanwhile I would be full of
- 41:38energy being like. So when are we going to go and
- 41:40explore? OK.
- 41:43And then my father would go shut the fuck up and give us some
- 41:45time to rest. John, is that the sort of thing
- 41:50you don't put aside man? Well look, 6 episodes of the Ice
- 41:58Warriors down. John, you.
- 42:02Didn't say say Derek Martinez did we?
- 42:04Have we? Changed your opinion on it
- 42:06Father. I enjoyed it more than I thought
- 42:09I would. To be fair, I still think it's
- 42:12still 2 episodes too long and those two episodes come very
- 42:15early on. So that's why I'm always
- 42:18thrilled with, I think because it goes, it stops and then
- 42:23doesn't start again. So.
- 42:25Interestingly, I enjoyed it a little less than I thought I
- 42:29would. Not the commentary.
- 42:30God, I love hanging with you guys.
- 42:32It's just that I was very aware. No, no way.
- 42:35I was very aware. He's putting his finger up right
- 42:37now. That swivel on it bitch that
- 42:43that this is a dialogue, this is a future historical and you do
- 42:48need the detail. You can't just sit there and
- 42:50look at the pictures. Even though the pictures are
- 42:53good. A lot of the interest of the
- 42:55story is in the detail, so I think turning the sound off and
- 43:02not listening to the dialogue, it is detrimental to the story.
- 43:05I do think it's a good story. I think it it pretty much holds
- 43:08up. It's 6 episodes on the whole.
- 43:12The narrative stutters a bit in two and three and there's great
- 43:15set pieces in it and Trout and it's just vibrant.
- 43:20But Martinez, you're right, we didn't mention him.
- 43:22And Martinez is the one that pulls it all together.
- 43:24We didn't mention him, as if we didn't mention him enough.
- 43:27No, we did mention him in the in the things.
- 43:30In the end, to learn things, Yeah.
- 43:33Anyway. Oh John, what is out of our
- 43:35misery? What?
- 43:36No, no, no, no, no, no. I'm going to take you into
- 43:39misery, baby. He's going to make us watch.
- 43:42He's going to make us watch an episode that makes us feel like
- 43:46we're there for the whole time. It spans the craw.
- 43:48Go on. Billion years.
- 43:52Oh no, Heaven sent. Yeah, let's do Hell Bent on Top
- 43:57while we're at it. Just for a bit extra, let's take
- 44:00a look. At Eddie's face give you the.
- 44:02Full misery. I think he's frozen.
- 44:06Yeah, thank God for that. He's frozen in total shock.
- 44:12My God. He's not moving.
- 44:14He's gone great. Well, John, I mean I.
- 44:18Just say it was your choice. And you have put up with, you
- 44:21know, quite a lot of pain in the last two.
- 44:23It's. Only an hour.
- 44:26It's quite. It's 2.
- 44:28Hours he needs to come running into the room so he can give his
- 44:32reaction. Oh, oh, he's going.
- 44:39He's so appalled by your choice, he said.
- 44:42He was, can't be. All his face was just.
- 44:44It was a perfect comedy face as well.
- 44:47Yeah. So it's heaven sent and hell
- 44:50bent, you say? I think so.
- 44:56Oh my God. Rudely kicked me off.
- 45:01Hello. Yeah.
- 45:04You know you had an appropriately shocked look on
- 45:06your face when he said Heaven sent and Hell bent.
- 45:10You had. Have you got a signal, Matt?
- 45:13Kind of. Right.
- 45:14You had an appropriately shocked look on your face.
- 45:16It was like. Yeah, and then I got cut off.
- 45:21Thank God for that, he got deposed.
- 45:23So I'm, I'm now, I'm now going to have to listen to episode 6
- 45:26to hear the ending. Sabotage Eddie John, sabotage
- 45:31your link. Viva.
- 45:33Revolution baby, baby. But as we out this episode,
- 45:40gentlemen, may I just say thank you so much for taking time out
- 45:45of your schedule. President of the to be with us
- 45:49here today. And thank you so much for taking
- 45:52it time out of your day of mining rocks Now.
