- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome into jags Am presented by Field's Auto Group. Jackson
- 0:21Speaker 1: will step up to luxury Fields Auto dot Com. I'm
- 0:24Speaker 1: kind of Annie Stephen's here with Brian Sexton, John Oser.
- 0:27Speaker 1: It is Chiefs week, it's the home opener. We're all
- 0:29Speaker 1: kinds of excited for our game on Sunday, so we're
- 0:31Speaker 1: diving into that matchup against the defending champs, and we
- 0:34Speaker 1: have our Chiefs insider Neil Jones with us today as
- 0:37Speaker 1: we go over some of the matchups and what it's
- 0:40Speaker 1: going to look like when these two teams face off
- 0:42Speaker 1: on Sunday. Neil, thank you for joining us. We appreciate you.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Good morning, Good morning.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What kind of what is the roster going to look
- 0:49Speaker 1: like when the Chiefs get here on Sunday. I know
- 0:51Speaker 1: you guys have Chris Jones back, and then obviously the
- 0:53Speaker 1: Travis Kelsey situation was the latest on that.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Well, at practice yesterday we were able to go in
- 0:58Speaker 3: and shoot stretching only because, as you call me an insider,
- 1:01Speaker 3: there are no insiders in the media in Kansas City.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Andy Reid is as secretive as they come. He is
- 1:06Speaker 3: Bill Belichick with a slightly more genial personality.
- 1:10Speaker 1: So we really don't know.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I will say this, Travis Kelcey didn't do anything overt.
- 1:15Speaker 3: He didn't make any movements that were quick. He did
- 1:18Speaker 3: some stuff. He did some reps, but they were at
- 1:21Speaker 3: about a quarter speed. He was wearing a sleeve on
- 1:24Speaker 3: his right knee. Wasn't really a brace. It was like
- 1:27Speaker 3: a sleeve you'd put over your.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Pads, which is a good sign.
- 1:31Speaker 3: All signs are that his knee injury is not very serious,
- 1:34Speaker 3: But does that mean he can play. They will not
- 1:36Speaker 3: play him if there's any chance that he could get
- 1:38Speaker 3: hurt worse, So we don't know if he's going to
- 1:41Speaker 3: go or not. The likelihood is that he will be
- 1:43Speaker 3: able to play. When it comes to Chris Jones, the
- 1:46Speaker 3: question is how many snaps can he get. Yesterday was
- 1:49Speaker 3: unseasonably cool, at least for this year in Kansas City.
- 1:53Speaker 2: It was eighty degrees with.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Very little humidity. It's been very hot in human all
- 1:57Speaker 3: summer long. During training camp. It's hard to know what
- 2:02Speaker 3: kind of shape Chris Jones is in. I will say this,
- 2:05Speaker 3: he works out year round. He knew come in into
- 2:08Speaker 3: the league that he puts on weight in the offseason,
- 2:10Speaker 3: and so he made a concerted effort to get training
- 2:13Speaker 3: staff down in Miami where he spins the off season.
- 2:16Speaker 3: He works out twice a day, almost year round. So
- 2:19Speaker 3: he comes in looking very slim for a man who's
- 2:22Speaker 3: over three hundred and twenty pounds, and he says he's
- 2:25Speaker 3: in great shape. But how does that translate into game shape?
- 2:28Speaker 3: How many snaps can he make? And I think he
- 2:30Speaker 3: can play a major role in this game if he's
- 2:33Speaker 3: able to play thirty or forty snaps.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Hey, Neil, nice to see you, my friend.
- 2:37Speaker 4: And you know, look you ky, you called him the
- 2:41Speaker 4: Chiefs insider, and he humbly shook that off. He's been
- 2:43Speaker 4: around kansaiting a long time and few people know the
- 2:46Speaker 4: Chiefs as well as Neil Jones.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So thank you for making time, my friend. It's good
- 2:49Speaker 2: to see you. Good to see you as well.
- 2:51Speaker 4: First of all, I've seen a lot of players in
- 2:52Speaker 4: early season one o'clock games in Jacksonville who were in
- 2:55Speaker 4: great shape get carried off the field here famously, some
- 2:59Speaker 4: Steelers back in nineteen ninety six where it felt like soup.
- 3:02Speaker 4: So Chris Jones can have worked out twice a day,
- 3:05Speaker 4: but if he didn't do it in the kind of
- 3:06Speaker 4: humidity he's going to see here on Sunday. I wonder
- 3:08Speaker 4: how many snaps he could take, But that's not my
- 3:10Speaker 4: question for you. You have seen good football in Kansas
- 3:13Speaker 4: City with Patrick Mahomes. Were you surprised at how much
- 3:16Speaker 4: it how ineffective the offense performed relative to their standard?
- 3:21Speaker 4: Obviously without Kelsey. I mean, Patrick has made it look
- 3:24Speaker 4: so easy with whomever was around him, but on that
- 3:27Speaker 4: Thursday night against the Lions, it seemed difficult for him,
- 3:30Speaker 4: maybe for the first time in his career.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, that's exactly what I took away from
- 3:36Speaker 3: that game and what surprised me so much. People don't
- 3:39Speaker 3: realize how good of a game planner Andy Reid really is.
- 3:42Speaker 3: I mean, we've seen him succeed with there's just a
- 3:44Speaker 3: number of different quarterbacks with different skill sets, and you
- 3:47Speaker 3: know that he's really good, but you don't realize how
- 3:50Speaker 3: great he is until he was given an instrument like
- 3:52Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes who can execute his offense, who's also very
- 3:56Speaker 3: smart and a hard worker, so that he can recognize
- 3:59Speaker 3: things and to see them kind of steymied was surprising,
- 4:03Speaker 3: But it was not just not having Kelsey that was
- 4:07Speaker 3: the biggest But there he's got young receivers who were
- 4:10Speaker 3: playing their first game. You know, their second round draft
- 4:14Speaker 3: pick for Shee Rice, number four, who's an excellent player
- 4:16Speaker 3: out of SMU is lost a little bit. Kadarius Tony
- 4:21Speaker 3: was getting open. He does know the offense and he's
- 4:23Speaker 3: worked very hard when he first came in from the
- 4:25Speaker 3: Giants last year, so he knew where to be. The
- 4:28Speaker 3: problem was when they threw it to him, he dropped
- 4:30Speaker 3: the football. They had eighteen incompletions which is a large
- 4:34Speaker 3: number for Patrick Mahomes, but ten of them are deemed
- 4:37Speaker 3: to be drops by the official stats to compiled by
- 4:40Speaker 3: the NFL.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Ten drops.
- 4:42Speaker 3: So they were executing the offense, getting the football people's hands,
- 4:46Speaker 3: they weren't catching it.
- 4:47Speaker 5: And what he does, what.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes does, he puts the ball up and gives
- 4:52Speaker 3: his receiver a chance to make plays. Sometimes that can
- 4:55Speaker 3: make him look bad if the receiver turns the wrong
- 4:58Speaker 3: way or doesn't win his battle for the ball, doesn't
- 5:01Speaker 3: go up and win it at the high point, because
- 5:02Speaker 3: it looks like he's just laying it out there. That's
- 5:05Speaker 3: what happened in the AFC Championship Game two years ago
- 5:07Speaker 3: in overtime against the Bengals and it got a beat.
- 5:10Speaker 3: He tried to get it to Tyreek Hill and give
- 5:13Speaker 3: him a chance to make a play, and Hill wasn't
- 5:15Speaker 3: able to make it. It looks like he was throwing
- 5:16Speaker 3: a double coverage, so it did look very uncharacteristic. But
- 5:20Speaker 3: I will say this, the last time did we saw
- 5:24Speaker 3: this Chiefs team playing without their all world tight end
- 5:28Speaker 3: Travis Kelce was against the Titans in the playoffs the
- 5:32Speaker 3: last half of the Alex Smith era. Their offense went
- 5:36Speaker 3: completely stagnant in the second half without the tight end,
- 5:40Speaker 3: he changes everything. Defensive coaches will say, you have to
- 5:44Speaker 3: account for him. Used to be you had to account
- 5:46Speaker 3: for him over the middle and for Tyreek Hill deep.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Now without Hill, you have to account for him and
- 5:52Speaker 3: without him in there to tie up a bunch of
- 5:55Speaker 3: underneath coverage. It changed the way people play defense against him,
- 5:58Speaker 3: and it made them vulnerable.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Neil, this is obviously a huge game for Jacksonville, It's
- 6:04Speaker 5: a big game for Kansas City. But I'm wondering if
- 6:07Speaker 5: you get any vibe for how the Chiefs sort of
- 6:08Speaker 5: feel about this game. I get the Jaguars had never
- 6:12Speaker 5: beaten them. They were nine to eight last year, etc.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Do the Chiefs care about this game in any way
- 6:18Speaker 5: the way the Jags do, or put that in perspective.
- 6:20Speaker 3: For me, what they're thinking of this, Well, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 3: that's the great thing about last year. They played two
- 6:25Speaker 3: games against the Jags. Game one, the Jags secondary was
- 6:29Speaker 3: more physical than any other secondary that the Chiefs saw.
- 6:33Speaker 3: They blasted them. It looked to me like they made
- 6:35Speaker 3: a concerted effort.
- 6:36Speaker 2: We are going to hit them early and often.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And just we're gonna go right up to the rules
- 6:40Speaker 3: and maybe a little bit over the line a little bit,
- 6:42Speaker 3: and we're gonna really put it on them. That got
- 6:44Speaker 3: their attention. I thought the Jags were much better that
- 6:47Speaker 3: first game than we expected. And then the playoff game
- 6:49Speaker 3: is a seven point game. I mean, they come into
- 6:53Speaker 3: this saying all the right things, but more than that,
- 6:55Speaker 3: I think that they believe.
- 6:57Speaker 1: This Jags team is a good team.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It is an ascending team that's coached by a guy
- 7:01Speaker 3: who Andy Reid loves, Doug Peterson. He talked about it
- 7:05Speaker 3: yesterday at the press conference. He goes, I've been with
- 7:07Speaker 3: him a long time, a lot of years. I respect him.
- 7:11Speaker 3: That carries over to the football team. This is a
- 7:14Speaker 3: smart football team as well as being a talented football team.
- 7:17Speaker 3: And I think they know how good the Jags can be.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I don't think there's any way they overlook Jacksonville.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Hey, quick thought, Neil. I'm sure you've gotten to know
- 7:24Speaker 4: Juwan Taylor a little bit. We all love the kid.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Just a tremendous young man and a good football player.
- 7:29Speaker 4: How is he handled all the questions in attention put
- 7:34Speaker 4: his way this week? Is he taking it in stride
- 7:36Speaker 4: or is he a little aggravated by it? Because when
- 7:38Speaker 4: he gets under his skin a little bit, he'll give
- 7:40Speaker 4: you that little twitch.
- 7:43Speaker 3: All right, Well, let me explain how it works. Yesterday
- 7:46Speaker 3: we go out there, we have Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones,
- 7:50Speaker 3: Kadarius Tony, and the head coach, Andy Reid. They closed
- 7:55Speaker 3: the locker room the minute the press conference ended, so
- 7:59Speaker 3: none of us win.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I don't know that.
- 8:00Speaker 3: There might have been one or two internet guys who
- 8:03Speaker 3: went in and talked to Juwan yesterday, but no television people
- 8:06Speaker 3: did because we were in the interview room and it's
- 8:08Speaker 3: an either or right, and everyone's like, I bet they
- 8:11Speaker 3: keep I bet they they closed down the locker room
- 8:14Speaker 3: the minute they get done with the press conference. And
- 8:16Speaker 3: that's exactly what happened, because everybody wanted to go in there.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I suspect today he will be There'll be some people
- 8:22Speaker 3: that do go in there, and they may even bring
- 8:23Speaker 3: him to the podium.
- 8:24Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 8:25Speaker 3: He did not have a great game. He didn't have
- 8:28Speaker 3: a terrible game on Thursday last Thursday, but he didn't
- 8:31Speaker 3: have a great game either. He had a couple of penalties,
- 8:34Speaker 3: and I didn't think the left tackle, the guy that
- 8:37Speaker 3: came in, Donovan Smith, who's a veteran guy who was
- 8:39Speaker 3: released from Tampa Bay last year, had a real good
- 8:42Speaker 3: run at Tampa Bay. I don't think he had a
- 8:44Speaker 3: great game either. He missed the block he got driven
- 8:47Speaker 3: right back into Mahomes's face. Now, Mahomes held the ball longer,
- 8:51Speaker 3: and this goes back, Brian, to what you were talking about.
- 8:54Speaker 2: He held the ball longer in.
- 8:56Speaker 3: That game Thursday. According to the NFL stistics official stats,
- 9:01Speaker 3: he held it longer than he did at any time
- 9:03Speaker 3: last year. And that's because receivers weren't getting open, and
- 9:07Speaker 3: so he's patting the ball and moving around, keeping his
- 9:09Speaker 3: head up field. So the offensive line had to protect
- 9:12Speaker 3: longer than usual. The ball wasn't out on time he
- 9:15Speaker 3: dropped back. You're used to it coming out. It wasn't
- 9:17Speaker 3: coming out. So I'm not pointing the finger at the
- 9:19Speaker 3: offensive line, but the offensive line did not have a
- 9:21Speaker 3: great game, and it started with the tackles.
- 9:24Speaker 5: Neil.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I just want to close out with you because I
- 9:26Speaker 1: like to get the outside perspective as to what other
- 9:28Speaker 1: teams are seeing. But we feel like Jaguars have things
- 9:31Speaker 1: in place with Doug Peterson and Trevor Lawrence. Obviously, you
- 9:34Speaker 1: have a coach in quarterback combo that's pretty much as
- 9:37Speaker 1: good as it gets when you have an outside perspective
- 9:39Speaker 1: looking in. What do you see from Trevor Lawrence? And
- 9:41Speaker 1: are you guys as high on him as maybe we are?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Well, I think he proved himself. He made great throws
- 9:47Speaker 3: in those two games. He stands in there. He's a
- 9:49Speaker 3: big guy who's not afraid to take it. You know,
- 9:52Speaker 3: he was handed such a bad hand right out of college,
- 9:56Speaker 3: and it reminds me a little bit of what Alex
- 9:57Speaker 3: Smith went through when he came out the number one
- 10:00Speaker 3: picking the draft. Not okay, let's face it, nowhere near
- 10:03Speaker 3: the college career that Trevor Lawrence had at Clemson. But
- 10:06Speaker 3: Alex Smith comes out from Utah, people expected good things
- 10:10Speaker 3: and he goes into a really bad situation and he
- 10:12Speaker 3: said it set him back at least two years, both
- 10:16Speaker 3: mentally and physically and with emotionally with his confidence. I
- 10:20Speaker 3: think that the job that they did last year and
- 10:23Speaker 3: Doug Peterson's ability to work with quarterbacks and that offense
- 10:26Speaker 3: is so quarterback friendly. They shaped the offense to fit
- 10:29Speaker 3: the skills of the quarterback. It was a great, great
- 10:31Speaker 3: thing for Trevor Lawrence. And I think last year we
- 10:34Speaker 3: began to see what he can do. Obviously we knew
- 10:36Speaker 3: what he did in college. So I think people look
- 10:38Speaker 3: at them and they think, Okay, this is a team
- 10:40Speaker 3: who's arrow is pointing up. They are going to be
- 10:43Speaker 3: a team to be reckoned with. And I think the
- 10:45Speaker 3: Chiefs are taking them very very seriously.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Wonderful and Neil, thanks so much. We look forward to
- 10:49Speaker 1: the matchup on Sunday. When you appreciate you joining us
- 10:52Speaker 1: this morning. Got all right, stay with us here on
- 10:55Speaker 1: jag Zam. Coming up, we're going to detail our big
- 10:57Speaker 1: things for this weekend, what to look forward to. EverBank advantage,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you make the most of your money at EverBank dot
- 11:11Speaker 1: com slash Jaguars. EverBank is sponsoring the home opener on Sunday,
- 11:15Speaker 1: which is I don't know if it's completely sold out,
- 11:18Speaker 1: but if not, they're very, very close. I think the
- 11:20Speaker 1: standing room tickets at this point. So if you haven't
- 11:22Speaker 1: gotten your tickets already or it might be a little late,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but try anyway, because it's going to be. It's gonna
- 11:26Speaker 1: be as good of an atmosphere as you guys have
- 11:28Speaker 1: seen here in a while. Yeah, especially this earlier in
- 11:30Speaker 1: the year.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I'm sure that that you guys have been hit like
- 11:33Speaker 4: I have with everybody who wants what can you get?
- 11:37Speaker 4: There are maybe a few standing room only that will
- 11:39Speaker 4: be available, but it's almost all gone.
- 11:42Speaker 2: It's going to be sensational.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Johnny feeling calls from all your friends.
- 11:45Speaker 5: I have no friends, but I'm not for that. I'm
- 11:49Speaker 5: feeling calls from people. You know. It's gonna be an
- 11:52Speaker 5: unbievable atmosphere. I did see somebody there's a story of
- 11:55Speaker 5: something that the biggest game in Jacksonville in years. Well, no,
- 11:59Speaker 5: it's not. The playoffs were here last year or in
- 12:01Speaker 5: the end of the season, but I will compare this.
- 12:04Speaker 5: I think most people who've been around for a little while.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Remember the atmosphere of the Patriots game in twenty eighteen.
- 12:11Speaker 5: That's what it's gonna feel like. With the heat, with
- 12:14Speaker 5: the energy, with the fact that this team has been
- 12:17Speaker 5: so good for so long. I don't know that it's
- 12:19Speaker 5: as easy to hate the Chiefs as it was to
- 12:23Speaker 5: hate the Patriots. Yeah, you know, they're not a hated team,
- 12:26Speaker 5: but beating them sure means exactly what beating the Patriots meant.
- 12:32Speaker 5: So yeah, it's gonna be It's gonna be a scene.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Man.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Part of the reason they won't be hated is because
- 12:36Speaker 4: Doug Peterson and Andy Reid's relationship is so strong. I
- 12:39Speaker 4: think people understand that. And the relationship between Mahomes and
- 12:42Speaker 4: Trevor Lawrence in the way that they've shown mutual respect,
- 12:45Speaker 4: is really strong too. I do want to point this out.
- 12:47Speaker 4: And John, you were there Week one home opener nineteen
- 12:52Speaker 4: ninety six. It felt like a million degrees on that field.
- 12:54Speaker 4: And here come the AFC defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers, fresh
- 12:57Speaker 4: off the Super Bowl, and I have Johnson and Greg
- 13:01Speaker 4: Lloyd and Kevin Green. This was a great team and
- 13:05Speaker 4: end of the third quarter they were carrying those guys
- 13:07Speaker 4: off the field. I mean, they just were not prepared
- 13:09Speaker 4: for how hot and steamy it was. It's hot in
- 13:12Speaker 4: Kansas City. I know I'm from there, but opening day
- 13:14Speaker 4: one o'clock here, it could really be something.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Can't You're sell the home field advantage for sure.
- 13:20Speaker 5: The only difference like that year, it was so nude everybody,
- 13:25Speaker 5: and they hadn't been very good in their expansion season,
- 13:28Speaker 5: So I don't know that people expected. They sort of hoped.
- 13:31Speaker 5: I think there's a feeling of, you know, this could
- 13:35Speaker 5: solidify what people hope they feel about this team, if
- 13:38Speaker 5: that makes any sense. So there's and again that was
- 13:42Speaker 5: the same feeling people had in eighteen and it all went,
- 13:48Speaker 5: it all went haywire. This doesn't feel anything close to
- 13:52Speaker 5: being able to go haywire. So I think people also
- 13:56Speaker 5: feel that there is a feeling of what I said yesterday.
- 13:59Speaker 5: I think people were jacked about this game, but they
- 14:03Speaker 5: also sort of realize there's gonna be more of these. Yeah,
- 14:06Speaker 5: this is the first of a lot of moments like this,
- 14:09Speaker 5: So it's gonna be cool, but it's not gonna be
- 14:11Speaker 5: the only one.
- 14:12Speaker 1: All right, let's go over some of our big things,
- 14:14Speaker 1: our first big thing is gonna be thirty six hundred
- 14:17Speaker 1: seconds because we talked a lot about the Jags having
- 14:19Speaker 1: a fast start, but now it's about playing a full
- 14:23Speaker 1: complete game. Doug Peterson talked a little bit about that
- 14:25Speaker 1: earlier this week.
- 14:27Speaker 7: It could come down to that, right, It could come
- 14:29Speaker 7: down to a kick. It could come down to whoever
- 14:32Speaker 7: has the ball last, which you know, you do look
- 14:36Speaker 7: at the playoff game, right and if we don't, we
- 14:38Speaker 7: don't fumble, hopefully you score. You're down three with you know,
- 14:41Speaker 7: five minutes to go, you get to you know, so
- 14:44Speaker 7: it's gonna come down to those types of types of moments,
- 14:47Speaker 7: and you know we've got to be prepared for that.
- 14:51Speaker 7: You know, not only is the coaching staff, but as
- 14:53Speaker 7: players and and but anytime you're playing you know, these
- 14:57Speaker 7: types of teams, you've you gotta be ready for that
- 15:01Speaker 7: fourth quarter.
- 15:03Speaker 1: John, I know you called it last week that the
- 15:04Speaker 1: game was gonna come down to the wire, but it
- 15:06Speaker 1: seems like it always comes down to the wire with
- 15:08Speaker 1: the Chiefs.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think the Jaguars task is to have
- 15:12Speaker 5: it be a game that last year's games, to me,
- 15:17Speaker 5: felt like the Jaguars had a chance if everything went right,
- 15:22Speaker 5: and that they were fighting uphill the whole fourth quarter,
- 15:25Speaker 5: and you kept thinking, if they could just get a
- 15:27Speaker 5: break and get back in this, they'll have a chance.
- 15:31Speaker 5: And it felt to me the whole games that the
- 15:34Speaker 5: Chiefs were clearly the better team and the Jaguars were
- 15:36Speaker 5: gonna need something special to happen.
- 15:39Speaker 2: At the end.
- 15:39Speaker 5: They were close. But the task now is to be
- 15:43Speaker 5: even keeled or even footing the whole game, and then
- 15:48Speaker 5: to be the team that makes the play, not have
- 15:50Speaker 5: it feel as much like a miracle as miracles too strong.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You know, I'm getting no I can elaborate on it.
- 15:55Speaker 5: I think they're there where they have a chance to
- 15:58Speaker 5: do that. At the same time, number fifteen over, they're
- 16:01Speaker 5: so good that it's hard to pay me well.
- 16:03Speaker 4: And that's it, John, Look, you go in this league
- 16:05Speaker 4: kai from being a bad team that loses big, which
- 16:07Speaker 4: the Jaguars have been, to a team on the rise
- 16:10Speaker 4: that loses small, which they were doing last year, to
- 16:14Speaker 4: a team that wins small, to a team that occasionally
- 16:16Speaker 4: wins big, because that doesn't happen this league that often, right,
- 16:19Speaker 4: So the next step for the Jags is to go
- 16:21Speaker 4: and win those small games, those tight games in the
- 16:23Speaker 4: fourth quarter you have to know and they do because
- 16:26Speaker 4: they watch that playoff game against Buffalo where the Jaguar
- 16:29Speaker 4: jaggs the Chiefs beat the Bills. You know with thirteen
- 16:31Speaker 4: seconds left to play. They understand this one. Can they
- 16:34Speaker 4: get comfortable with it? Can you go into the fourth
- 16:36Speaker 4: quarter knowing that you have to be on an even
- 16:39Speaker 4: keel emotionally, mentally, physically, you have to be ready to
- 16:43Speaker 4: go every second of the game because Mahomes is so
- 16:47Speaker 4: incredibly good in those situations. Is this team ready for that?
- 16:51Speaker 4: And Doug and Trevor both answered the question yesterday and
- 16:54Speaker 4: both believe they're ready to take that step.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I mean, we compliment them all the time, or at
- 16:58Speaker 1: least I do. Trevor is about us even as it
- 17:00Speaker 1: gets and this will truly be the test of how
- 17:02Speaker 1: even keeled he can be when you take on the Chiefs,
- 17:04Speaker 1: because they always seem to pull it out of everybody else.
- 17:07Speaker 1: People fall apart going up against them. So we'll see
- 17:09Speaker 1: what Trevor can do with that on Sunday. Our next
- 17:12Speaker 1: big thing today is gonna be a shootout, because when
- 17:15Speaker 1: you're going up against the Chiefs, you can try and
- 17:17Speaker 1: slow them down a little bit, but it's really gonna
- 17:18Speaker 1: come down to maybe who has the ball last on Sunday,
- 17:21Speaker 1: and Trevor Lawrence talked about that earlier this week as well.
- 17:25Speaker 8: But you do understand that even if it the final
- 17:28Speaker 8: score isn't thirty plus points or whatever it is, you
- 17:32Speaker 8: understand the firepower they had that they can answer at
- 17:34Speaker 8: any moment. So I think that's something like I said,
- 17:36Speaker 8: you got to execute in situations. You gotta score off turnovers,
- 17:39Speaker 8: you gotta score in the red zone, specifically touchdowns. You know,
- 17:42Speaker 8: all those things are heightened awareness of that based on
- 17:45Speaker 8: who you're playing. But yeah, I mean, I'm excited to
- 17:48Speaker 8: see our defense. You know, they get another crack at them.
- 17:49Speaker 8: It's gonna be fun.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Brian, are you looking at something like thirty five thirty one?
- 17:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you're gonna be high.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean at thirty one to twenty eight. Maybe
- 17:59Speaker 4: I asked him the question, and I don't know whether
- 18:01Speaker 4: you caught on. The very first thing he did was
- 18:03Speaker 4: defend the defense and said, I have faith in the defense.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I'm excited about.
- 18:06Speaker 4: What they're capable of doing, and then he went into
- 18:08Speaker 4: scoring points. I have faith in the defense too, based
- 18:11Speaker 4: on what they did last week how well they played.
- 18:13Speaker 4: It's not about the defense. It's about the fact that
- 18:15Speaker 4: with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, these guys averaged twenty
- 18:19Speaker 4: nine point two points per game last year. They score
- 18:23Speaker 4: against everybody, you're gonna score thirty, which means points points
- 18:27Speaker 4: points points points.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Yeah, the Chiefs scored twenty seven twice last year against
- 18:32Speaker 5: this team and won both games. The Jaguars are not billed.
- 18:38Speaker 5: Very few teams are in the NFL right now, But
- 18:39Speaker 5: the Jaguars didn't build this thing to beat the Chiefs
- 18:42Speaker 5: seventeen to fourteen. They build it to win thirty one
- 18:46Speaker 5: twenty seven, to get those ten points that they didn't
- 18:49Speaker 5: get last year. I thought the money quote from Doug
- 18:53Speaker 5: Peterson yesterday it sort of goes back to big thing
- 18:56Speaker 5: One was when he was talking about the Chiefs get
- 19:00Speaker 5: better as the game goes on, and then you followed
- 19:02Speaker 5: that with we're starting to do that. I'm paraphrasing with that.
- 19:07Speaker 5: To me, that's the thing that if you sat Doug
- 19:11Speaker 5: down and said what do you respect most about the
- 19:13Speaker 5: Chiefs and Andy Reid that he gets his teams to
- 19:15Speaker 5: do that, it goes back to it's going to be
- 19:17Speaker 5: a high scoring game, and the team that can look
- 19:21Speaker 5: the other team in the eye and make that play
- 19:23Speaker 5: at the end is the team that's going to win.
- 19:25Speaker 5: The reason the Chiefs have been five straight AFC Championship
- 19:29Speaker 5: games is they're usually the team to do that. I
- 19:31Speaker 5: think Doug thinks, if we can be the team to
- 19:33Speaker 5: stare this team in the eye, there's no team we
- 19:35Speaker 5: can't stare.
- 19:36Speaker 1: In the eye. Absolutely, and that's bodes well for the
- 19:38Speaker 1: rest of the big games this year. Our final big
- 19:40Speaker 1: thing is going to be windshield because you need to
- 19:42Speaker 1: look forward in this league. And while the Jags came
- 19:45Speaker 1: out on the wrong side of things in the two
- 19:47Speaker 1: games last year against the Chiefs, they have an opportunity
- 19:50Speaker 1: in Week two to make a statement, but also for
- 19:53Speaker 1: themselves kind of see where they're at. They're going to
- 19:55Speaker 1: have to compete against teams like this I especially in
- 19:57Speaker 1: the playoffs if they want to make it to their
- 19:59Speaker 1: ultimate goal. So, Brian, when you look at this, is
- 20:01Speaker 1: it a measuring stick game? What do you want to
- 20:03Speaker 1: call it? Whatever you want to call it, What can
- 20:05Speaker 1: we take away from this game on Sunday?
- 20:06Speaker 4: Well, yes, it is a measuring stick game because you're
- 20:09Speaker 4: going up against the champs and how much better are
- 20:12Speaker 4: you than you were last year? Can you execute better
- 20:15Speaker 4: than you did last year? Because as John mentioned, you know,
- 20:18Speaker 4: they gave up twenty seven points, which was below the
- 20:20Speaker 4: Chiefs average, but they still didn't do enough. Are they
- 20:23Speaker 4: ready to do enough? And I know the question was
- 20:26Speaker 4: asked a lot, you know this week. Do you go
- 20:28Speaker 4: back and look at those games against Kansas City? Is
- 20:30Speaker 4: it personal? You know, did you grind? Did you wear
- 20:33Speaker 4: that all off season? And these guys, the guys at
- 20:36Speaker 4: least that I heard, the answer was no, I'm looking forward.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Do I recognize?
- 20:40Speaker 5: Yes?
- 20:40Speaker 4: But am I focused on what we did last year? No,
- 20:43Speaker 4: which tells me about the way that Doug Peterson has
- 20:45Speaker 4: this team mentally ready to go. You can't just it's revenge.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Doesn't work in the NFL, except in very limited cases.
- 20:53Speaker 4: It's got to be about proving yourself and showing the
- 20:57Speaker 4: league who you are now, not that you're better than
- 21:00Speaker 4: you were last year.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Yeah, they've got to get past this team, obviously to
- 21:03Speaker 5: get where they want to go. But I don't think
- 21:05Speaker 5: these guys last year. I spent the off season saying,
- 21:08Speaker 5: oh man, the Chiefs, you know they jenerars weren't the
- 21:13Speaker 5: best team in football last year. It's not like the
- 21:15Speaker 5: beat It's like ninety nine and they beat everybody else
- 21:18Speaker 5: and couldn't bet the Titans. They were, you know, ascending,
- 21:21Speaker 5: and they ran into the best team in football twice
- 21:23Speaker 5: best mean football beat them. So I think they just
- 21:25Speaker 5: look at it as, yes, it's a measuring stick, because
- 21:28Speaker 5: if they beat or how they play against them shows
- 21:30Speaker 5: where they are. But I don't get the vibe that
- 21:33Speaker 5: it's all or nothing. If you follow me, I think
- 21:35Speaker 5: they think, well, this is gonna be measuring stick. And
- 21:37Speaker 5: then the Bills and then the Bengal. You know they're
- 21:40Speaker 5: gonna be big games. At some point, they're gonna start
- 21:43Speaker 5: winning those big games, is it, Sunday? I don't know.
- 21:45Speaker 5: I think they're gonna be really good for a long time.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Are they ready to win this game? Sunday? I don't know,
- 21:51Speaker 5: because that's why they play the games.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I think this is why we're so confident about them
- 21:55Speaker 1: going forward, because it's not like years past or maybe
- 21:57Speaker 1: they're getting up for one big game and then there's
- 21:59Speaker 1: a f all off after that. They're even keeled going
- 22:02Speaker 1: into this. Yes it's a big game, but they know
- 22:04Speaker 1: There's a lot more season to go after week two,
- 22:07Speaker 1: so stay with us here on jag Zam. He will,
- 22:08Speaker 1: he won't, he might? As we preview the Sunday's matchup
- 22:11Speaker 1: in the home opener tags fans, If you want customized
- 22:18Speaker 1: Jaguars furniture for your home, check out zipchair dot com
- 22:20Speaker 1: to browse all customizable options. Zip chair is furniture for fans.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Welcome back as we get ready for he will he won't?
- 22:28Speaker 1: He might in our Sunday matchup against the Chiefs. Rand
- 22:31Speaker 1: you want to kick us off with who you.
- 22:32Speaker 5: Have for him?
- 22:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going with Andre Cisco and Andre will have
- 22:37Speaker 4: a big game on Sunday.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Now, look, I just got done saying they didn't look
- 22:40Speaker 2: back to last year.
- 22:41Speaker 4: But if there's one guy that might look back, it
- 22:43Speaker 4: would be Andre Cisco. You know, he got that penalty
- 22:47Speaker 4: for the hit that he made on Marcus Valdez. Scant No,
- 22:50Speaker 4: was a scantling, I thought it was.
- 22:52Speaker 2: It was Jay Wright. It was a concussions christ teacher, right.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Okay, So he had that big hit which was not
- 22:58Speaker 4: any illegal hit. And then of course he had the
- 23:00Speaker 4: hit last week on the tight end in the ball game,
- 23:03Speaker 4: again not a cheap shot, but it was illegal in
- 23:05Speaker 4: the sense that it was poorly timed. He's a big
- 23:08Speaker 4: hitter and a big, big player in the middle of
- 23:11Speaker 4: this defense. He'll have a big game on Sunday and
- 23:13Speaker 4: he might remember a little bit about last year. He
- 23:16Speaker 4: won't back down. His style is not going to change.
- 23:19Speaker 4: He'll make adjustments so that he doesn't give fifteen yard
- 23:21Speaker 4: penalties every game, but that's just not the way he's
- 23:24Speaker 4: going to play the game. He is going to be
- 23:25Speaker 4: there to deliver the hit in the middle of the field.
- 23:28Speaker 4: He's an enforcer of swords and John. I think he
- 23:31Speaker 4: might be the most overlooked guy in the Jaguars on
- 23:34Speaker 4: the Jaguars defense, because you know, we talked about Trayvon
- 23:37Speaker 4: and Josh and Foyer and Devin and Tyson all the time,
- 23:41Speaker 4: and yet Andre Cisco is a really good football player
- 23:45Speaker 4: and a really important piece on the back end. You know,
- 23:48Speaker 4: he's that quarterback of the defense, especially the secondary, that
- 23:52Speaker 4: gets everybody where they're supposed to be. And then he's
- 23:55Speaker 4: got the speed, in the range, in the size to
- 23:56Speaker 4: be a good closer and clean plays up.
- 23:59Speaker 5: Yeah, it was He's starting to be really good, and
- 24:03Speaker 5: he was good last year starting to come on. He
- 24:07Speaker 5: had that weird start where he didn't play as a
- 24:10Speaker 5: rookie in the urban year. That was all kind of
- 24:12Speaker 5: messed up. But yeah, he's quietly. I'm not sure why
- 24:18Speaker 5: it's so quiet, because he's a big hitter and he
- 24:20Speaker 5: makes plays, so it feels like he's one game or
- 24:25Speaker 5: one sort of big play away from all of a
- 24:28Speaker 5: sudden being a guy that every fan talks about hay
- 24:31Speaker 5: lof Cisco, Yeah, because he's a likable kid when you
- 24:33Speaker 5: interview him, very very intelligent, very dynamic to talk to.
- 24:40Speaker 5: He's a safety who he has a little bit of
- 24:43Speaker 5: a unique combination of he really hits and at the
- 24:47Speaker 5: same time he's got an incredible nose for the ball.
- 24:50Speaker 5: So he's probably that close to being, I don't say
- 24:52Speaker 5: a national name, but a really big time player. A
- 24:56Speaker 5: lot of people know.
- 24:56Speaker 4: About hadding towards Aco in his last year, Yeah, Syracuse,
- 25:00Speaker 4: he would have been a.
- 25:01Speaker 1: First up pick, certainly a first round talent at least
- 25:04Speaker 1: for US. Fortunately, John, who do you have for he will?
- 25:07Speaker 7: He won't?
- 25:07Speaker 1: He might this week?
- 25:08Speaker 5: Well, I kind of went with the obvious, or to me,
- 25:11Speaker 5: it's obvious. Calvin Ridley, he will obviously be very important
- 25:18Speaker 5: to the game plan. He won't be overlooked because she's
- 25:22Speaker 5: going to know about him. At the same time, in
- 25:25Speaker 5: the he won't part. He's the one factor in this offense.
- 25:29Speaker 5: With apologies to Bigsby and Strange, He's the one difference
- 25:34Speaker 5: between what they were last year and what they are now.
- 25:38Speaker 5: And we've all talked about it. We talked about it
- 25:41Speaker 5: so much in the off season. We saw a little
- 25:43Speaker 5: bit of it last week. But it feels to me
- 25:47Speaker 5: like there's a step in terms of dynamic above the
- 25:50Speaker 5: exits and those plays that he's capable of that might good. Hey,
- 25:57Speaker 5: I didn't have to stop. I just went right into it.
- 25:59Speaker 5: You're getting John might be the difference in the game
- 26:02Speaker 5: because he's the difference in this offense and just statistically
- 26:07Speaker 5: scored twenty fourist last year scored twenty against the Chiefs.
- 26:12Speaker 5: He might be that guy that gets him to thirty
- 26:15Speaker 5: that they need. So great trade. Obviously, great vision to
- 26:19Speaker 5: see this coming from Trent Balkey. He might be the
- 26:23Speaker 5: difference in the game because as good as he looked
- 26:27Speaker 5: last week, I think Jaguars fans are excited about what
- 26:29Speaker 5: he did. Did you guys think that he was maxing
- 26:33Speaker 5: out at all. I mean, so there's something there, Yes,
- 26:36Speaker 5: And you wonder if with a special player like this,
- 26:40Speaker 5: the moment gets bigger, he'll get bigger. So I just
- 26:44Speaker 5: wonder if there's not a big moment game something from
- 26:47Speaker 5: Calvin Realley this weekend.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Mine is similar in the sense that it bounces off Calvin. Really,
- 26:51Speaker 1: because I'm staying the offensive side of the ball, I picked.
- 26:53Speaker 3: The Christian Kurk.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I think he's going to lead the team and catches
- 26:56Speaker 1: this week because I don't believe he's going to be shit.
- 26:59Speaker 1: He won't be shut out like he was last week.
- 27:01Speaker 1: I don't believe he's gonna have two down weeks in
- 27:03Speaker 1: a row. And we discussed, you know, Jay Jones was
- 27:05Speaker 1: the recipient of some of those benefits from playing with
- 27:08Speaker 1: Calvin Ridley when there's overcoverage on him. Za Jones benefited
- 27:12Speaker 1: with that great touchdown catch, and I think Christian Kirk
- 27:14Speaker 1: is going to benefit this week. Especially if Chris Jones
- 27:17Speaker 1: in the backfield a lot, They're going to want to
- 27:19Speaker 1: bail out and get those quick passes off, and I
- 27:21Speaker 1: think Christian Kirk is going to be that guy that
- 27:23Speaker 1: is the recipient for that. Frequently and he might very
- 27:26Speaker 1: well be the guy at the end of the game
- 27:28Speaker 1: that ends up being that game winning catch, whether it's
- 27:31Speaker 1: Calvin or not. Because I know everybody's eyes are on Calvin,
- 27:34Speaker 1: I think it might be one of the other targets.
- 27:35Speaker 1: And for me, it's Christian Kirk this week that I
- 27:37Speaker 1: think will benefit most from that.
- 27:39Speaker 4: I talked to offensive coordinator Press Taylor yesterday after practice.
- 27:42Speaker 4: He told me that he had a nice conversation with Christian.
- 27:45Speaker 4: The Christian gets the fact that with all the talent
- 27:48Speaker 4: that's there on the offensive side of the ball, there
- 27:50Speaker 4: are going to be days where the ball is just
- 27:52Speaker 4: going to go the other way. And there were situations
- 27:54Speaker 4: in the game where the ball could have gone to him.
- 27:57Speaker 4: But the Colts, and especially with the linebacker Shack Leonard
- 27:59Speaker 4: and middle of the field, we're very aware of where
- 28:03Speaker 4: Christian Kirk was. And he doesn't think there's gonna be
- 28:05Speaker 4: a lot of games this year where Christian Kirk only
- 28:08Speaker 4: has one catch.
- 28:09Speaker 5: Here's what's going to happen this year. Every week, I'm
- 28:11Speaker 5: going to get some email, but why didn't they do this?
- 28:14Speaker 1: You know? Ye?
- 28:15Speaker 5: All the emails last week were why did they stick
- 28:17Speaker 5: with the run? So much. Well, you know what if
- 28:19Speaker 5: they hadn't stuck with the run and been why they
- 28:20Speaker 5: get away from the run. If you're going to stick
- 28:23Speaker 5: with the run, which this team is going to do
- 28:25Speaker 5: in spots, and get the ball to Ridley and get
- 28:28Speaker 5: the ball to Evan and get the ball to Tank
- 28:31Speaker 5: and get the you know, somebody's going to get left
- 28:33Speaker 5: out because there's only so many I answered a question
- 28:36Speaker 5: about Christian Kirk this week in the Ozone Man, so
- 28:38Speaker 5: his game's only last, so loll there's only so many
- 28:41Speaker 5: catches or there's only so many plays. If it had
- 28:43Speaker 5: been five quarters, I'll bet Kirk has three catches for twenties,
- 28:46Speaker 5: you know, but time runs out and all of a sudden,
- 28:50Speaker 5: presses that they're going I got it now, I gotta
- 28:52Speaker 5: talk to.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Well listen my interview with Press wool Run in the
- 28:58Speaker 4: first hour of the pregame radio show, so if you'd
- 29:01Speaker 4: like to hear it, look for it there. But he said,
- 29:03Speaker 4: I'm going to call plays for everyone. I'm never going
- 29:07Speaker 4: to tell the quarterback where to throw the football, right, Okay, Well,
- 29:10Speaker 4: that's the quarterback's decision based on what he sees, and
- 29:13Speaker 4: week to week based on what the defense says, with
- 29:15Speaker 4: how the defense tries to defend them, he will find
- 29:20Speaker 4: guys that are open.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Look at us all these options?
- 29:23Speaker 5: Is this what is this about?
- 29:24Speaker 1: The team has so many places to go. This is great,
- 29:27Speaker 1: this is a good, good place to be, but they
- 29:28Speaker 1: have too many people to throw the ball to say
- 29:30Speaker 1: with us as we go around the locker room previewing
- 29:32Speaker 1: Sunday's matchup against the Chiefs back here on JAG's Am,
- 29:42Speaker 1: We're going to quickly go around the locker room see
- 29:44Speaker 1: what some of the players had to say as they
- 29:45Speaker 1: get geared up for a big matchup this week on Sunday.
- 29:48Speaker 6: They're really a great all around team. The old line
- 29:51Speaker 6: works really well together. Mahomes is obviously a tremendous quarterback,
- 29:54Speaker 6: Travis obviously a great receiving threat. And then it's it's
- 29:59Speaker 6: schematics as well. You know, Andy Reid is a you know,
- 30:01Speaker 6: he's gonna be a Hall of Fame coach one day,
- 30:02Speaker 6: so you know, he's putting his guys in a great position.
- 30:05Speaker 9: It's really about what we need to do, making sure
- 30:08Speaker 9: that everyone's in the spots that they need to be,
- 30:10Speaker 9: making sure that we all rely on one another, and
- 30:12Speaker 9: we go out there and we'd be where we need
- 30:14Speaker 9: to be where we need to be there and just
- 30:16Speaker 9: trust the process and and uh we'll see what happens
- 30:19Speaker 9: at the end.
- 30:19Speaker 5: Of the game.
- 30:20Speaker 10: Yeah, it'll be a good test for us early in
- 30:21Speaker 10: the season to see where we're at. And uh, you know,
- 30:24Speaker 10: this is gonna be a tight football game, and we
- 30:26Speaker 10: know that, we know adversity's gonna strike. And so I
- 30:28Speaker 10: think it's big for us, you know, week two, uh,
- 30:30Speaker 10: to really get a taste of you know, the caliber
- 30:33Speaker 10: football and the level of football that we want to play,
- 30:36Speaker 10: you know, and we're gonna have to beat teams like
- 30:37Speaker 10: this to get to where we want to go. So
- 30:39Speaker 10: I think it's really important, you know, for us to
- 30:41Speaker 10: approach it that way. And uh, you know, I'm looking
- 30:43Speaker 10: forward to see how we respond, like I said, you know,
- 30:45Speaker 10: when when things get tough and uh, you know, hopefully
- 30:47Speaker 10: come out on the positive side of fans.
- 30:49Speaker 1: So all right, seems like the players are ready, coaches
- 30:52Speaker 1: are ready. I know the fans are ready to get
- 30:53Speaker 1: out there on Sunday. Uh, final call you guys who
- 30:56Speaker 1: you got on Sunday?
- 30:57Speaker 5: John Ah, ain'ts h I'm bailing because I got to
- 31:02Speaker 5: pick for it. I think it's a coin flip. I
- 31:05Speaker 5: think the Jaguars can win. I don't know if they're
- 31:08Speaker 5: ready to beat Mahomes, so I think it's gonna be tight.
- 31:11Speaker 2: I say Jacksonville thirty one to thirty.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Brandon McManus drills a long field goal to beat the
- 31:18Speaker 4: Chiefs here in front of an insane crowd on a
- 31:22Speaker 4: really warm day, and yeah, I just have the sense
- 31:28Speaker 4: that this team is ready to get over that hump, now,
- 31:30Speaker 4: you know. I mean that doesn't mean they're gonna be
- 31:31Speaker 4: all of these teams, you know, the Buffaloes and the
- 31:33Speaker 4: Bengals and that, but I just have the sense that
- 31:36Speaker 4: this one is theirs.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Yeah, there's part of me that thinks this offense could
- 31:40Speaker 5: score if they can get these guys blocked, which is
- 31:45Speaker 5: a big if. Yeah, the offense it's there, it's there
- 31:52Speaker 5: if they can get him blocked.
- 31:53Speaker 4: I also don't think that Travis Kelcey, even if he plays,
- 31:56Speaker 4: is gonna be anywhere near himself. And I think that
- 31:59Speaker 4: Devin Lloyd and Andre Cisco are more prepared this year
- 32:02Speaker 4: to be able to handle that or however Mike uses them.
- 32:05Speaker 4: But those two guys would seem to be the guys
- 32:07Speaker 4: most capable of handling him in that situation, and I
- 32:10Speaker 4: just don't think he's going to be himself, and I
- 32:11Speaker 4: think the Jags take advantage of that.
- 32:13Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a game where we can see if some
- 32:14Speaker 5: guys have grown up.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Yep, absolutely, we'll see. It's definitely going to come down
- 32:18Speaker 1: to the last minute. I think for whoever comes out
- 32:21Speaker 1: on top, I'm going to double down on the Jags.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I said they were going to start really hot, so
- 32:25Speaker 1: they're going to take down the Chiefs in week two.
- 32:27Speaker 1: All right, we'll have all of your recap for you
- 32:29Speaker 1: on Monday on Jags Am. Enjoy the home opener on Sunday,
