- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Great to have your company on
- 0:16this Wednesday the 19th of March.
- 0:20We are just just beginning to unwrap this incredible story of
- 0:25Jesus as captured in the Gospel of John.
- 0:29Now, we have spent a fair bit of time already this year in the
- 0:32Old Testament. And so if you like, we have been
- 0:35reading the wrapper, right? We have just got this delicious
- 0:38chocolate bar and we have been reading all about what goes in
- 0:41it, where it's from, what's the title of it, what's the story
- 0:45behind it, what's the marketing around it, as we have really
- 0:48kind of understood the context into which Jesus would come and
- 0:53the story of God engaging with his people throughout history.
- 0:57But yes, friends, make no mistake, we don't buy a Mars bar
- 1:01to read the wrapper. We buy it to open it, unwrap it,
- 1:05and taste that deliciousness inside.
- 1:07And that, friends, is Jesus. And that is what we get to do
- 1:11with the gospel today. We finally get to hear the words
- 1:15of the man of Jesus walking around interacting with people.
- 1:19This is the basis of our faith. This is what it's all about,
- 1:23friends, as we get to know our Saviour better by reading these
- 1:29words, these words captured by his disciple who at the end of a
- 1:33long life wrote these words inspired by the Holy Spirit so
- 1:38that you and I can get to know Jesus much, much better.
- 1:41Well, I don't know about you, but I'm excited.
- 1:43Do you want to dive into it with me?
- 1:45Oh, excellent. Let us do just that as we read
- 1:48together the rest of chapter 119 to 51.
- 2:01This was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests
- 2:05and temple assistance from Jerusalem to ask John, Who are
- 2:09you? He came right out and said, I am
- 2:13not the Messiah. Well, then, who are you?
- 2:17They asked. Are you Elijah?
- 2:19No, he replied. Are you the prophet we're
- 2:23expecting? No.
- 2:25Then who are you? We need an answer for those who
- 2:29sent us. What do you have to say about
- 2:31yourself? John replied.
- 2:34In the words of the prophet Isaiah, I am a voice shouting in
- 2:38the wilderness, clear the way for the Lord's coming.
- 2:44Then the Pharisees who had been sent asked him, If you aren't
- 2:48the Messiah or Elijah or the prophet, what right do you have
- 2:52to baptised? John told them.
- 2:55I baptised with water. The right here in the crowd is
- 2:59someone you do not recognise, though his ministry follows
- 3:03mine. I'm not even worthy to be a
- 3:06slave and untie the straps of his sandals.
- 3:10This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the
- 3:14Jordan River where John was baptising.
- 3:18The next day. John saw Jesus coming toward him
- 3:22and said, Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the
- 3:28world. He is the one I was talking
- 3:32about when I said, a man is coming after me who is far
- 3:35greater than I am, for he existed long before me.
- 3:39I did not recognise him as the Messiah, but I have been
- 3:43baptising with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.
- 3:49Then John testified I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a
- 3:55dove from heaven and resting upon him.
- 3:59I didn't know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptise
- 4:03with water, he told me the one on whom you see the Spirit
- 4:08descend and rest is the one who will baptise with the Holy
- 4:12Spirit. I saw this happen to Jesus, so I
- 4:17testify that He is the chosen one of God.
- 4:23The following day John was again standing with two of his
- 4:26disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked
- 4:30at him and declared, look, there is the Lamb of God.
- 4:35When John's two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
- 4:40Jesus looked around and saw them following.
- 4:43What do you want? He asked them.
- 4:45They replied Rabbi, which means teacher, where are you staying,
- 4:52come and see. He said.
- 4:55It was about 4:00 in the afternoon when they went with
- 4:57him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with
- 5:00him the rest of the day. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother,
- 5:05was one of these men who heard what John had said and then
- 5:08followed Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother
- 5:12Simon and told him we have found the Messiah, which means Christ.
- 5:19Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus.
- 5:22Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said your name is Simon, son of
- 5:28John, but you will be called Cephas, which means Peter.
- 5:34The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee.
- 5:38He found Philip and said to him, come follow me.
- 5:43Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter's hometown.
- 5:48Philip went to look for Nathaniel and told him we have
- 5:51found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about.
- 5:55His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.
- 5:59Nazareth exclaimed Nathaniel, can anything good come from
- 6:04Nazareth? Come and see for yourself.
- 6:07Philip replied. As they approached, Jesus said,
- 6:11Now here is a genuine son of Israel, a man of complete
- 6:17integrity. How do you know about me?
- 6:20Nathaniel asked. Jesus replied, I could see you
- 6:24under the fig tree before Philip found you.
- 6:27Then Nathaniel exclaimed, Rabbi, you are the son of God, the King
- 6:33of Israel. Jesus asked him, Do you believe
- 6:38this? Just because I told you I'd seen
- 6:40you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than
- 6:44this then, he said. I tell you the truth, you will
- 6:49all see heaven open and the Angel of God going up and down
- 6:55on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven
- 7:00and earth. Oh Jesus, what a joy it is to
- 7:14hear you walk and talk and interact and call people to you.
- 7:23Thank you that you didn't just leave it to chance that we might
- 7:27know what your nature is and what the nature of the Father
- 7:30is. No, you made sure that we knew
- 7:35by coming yourself, living a blameless life and teaching us
- 7:41what love really looks like. Oh Jesus, as we are going to
- 7:46spend these weeks in your presence, yes, every day as you
- 7:50walk side by side with us, but specifically in these readings
- 7:55as we hear your words, as we read of your behaviour and your
- 7:59actions. Our Lord, I pray that you would
- 8:02inspire us by your words that as we come face to face with you as
- 8:09a man and this record of you and your deep longing for us to
- 8:13follow you as your disciples. Oh, I pray that you would shape
- 8:18us, that you would change us, and that these words of yours
- 8:22would not return to you empty, but would bring a harvest
- 8:27through us that would bring Your Kingdom to reality here and now.
- 8:33We love you Jesus, and we place you at the highest place in our
- 8:37life. And pray all of this through
- 8:39your precious name. Amen.
