Speaker 2: Thursday edition of the show, Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes
• 1:22
Speaker 2: says a drizzly kind of day. And at some point,
• 1:25
Speaker 2: we could see some storms at some point today. Temps
• 1:27
Speaker 2: are below 80s. Some rain around this evening, lows in
• 1:30
Speaker 2: the mid to upper 60s. Showers and storms tomorrow in
• 1:32
Speaker 2: high school football Friday night looking wet and windy. Tomorrow
• 1:35
Speaker 2: around 80. Temperatures are going to drop sharply while you're
• 1:38
Speaker 2: at your team's game tomorrow night. Saturday, you wanted fall.
• 1:41
Speaker 2: You got it. For fall, y'all, in St. Albans, the
• 1:44
Speaker 2: events going on on the Elk and Bridge Day and
• 1:46
Speaker 2: all that, high temperature only around 55 on Saturday. Could
• 1:51
Speaker 2: have our first frost, Brian says, overnight Saturday into Sunday,
• 1:54
Speaker 2: temps on Sunday in the mid-60s and into around 70
• 1:56
Speaker 2: or so on Monday. Download the Metro News television app

• 2:04
Speaker 2: from V100 and Bobby Spry from our sales and promotions
• 2:07
Speaker 2: department are going to stop by. There's a race for
• 2:09
Speaker 2: judge in Putnam County on Election Day, November 3rd. We'll
• 2:13
Speaker 2: talk to one of the candidates, Chris Raines, about that. Also,
• 2:15
Speaker 2: Marjorie Cook from Advantage Valley will stop by. And as
• 2:18
Speaker 2: I said, your calls and texts are always welcome. The
• 2:20
Speaker 2: big event, and it happens every year in Eleanor, the
• 2:22
Speaker 2: annual Hometown Advantage Career Fair. Next Thursday evening, 5.30 to
• 2:26
Speaker 2: 8 at the Putnam Career Technical Center. Here to talk
• 2:28
  Speaker 2: about it, C.D.
• 2:29
  Speaker 1: Caldwell.
• 2:30
Speaker 2: Who is the Director of Career and Technical Education for
• 2:32
Speaker 2: Putnam County Schools. He is with me in the Jericho
• 2:34
Speaker 2: Structures studios this morning. Good morning, C.D. Welcome to the show.
• 2:37
Speaker 6: Thanks for having me today.
• 2:38
Speaker 2: And via the Guarantee Bank hotline is Morgan Tenney, who
• 2:41
Speaker 2: is the Executive Director of the Putnam County Development Authority.
• 2:43
Speaker 2: Good morning, Morgan. How are you?
• 2:46
Speaker 7: Good morning, my friend. Sorry I'm not in person. Good
• 2:48
Speaker 7: to hear from you all.
• 2:49
Speaker 2: Well, we got big stuff going on over in Putnam
• 2:51
Speaker 2: County today, so we completely understand that. Big stuff going
• 2:54
Speaker 2: on next week as well. C.D., I want to start
• 2:56
Speaker 2: with you. How many years has this been going on?
• 2:58
Speaker 6: This has been going on for three years. It's something
• 3:02
Speaker 6: we really look forward to every year, bringing community together,
• 3:06
Speaker 6: opening our classrooms up. We sent out to all the schools.
• 3:11
Speaker 6: This is for anyone in Putnam County. If you have
• 3:14
Speaker 6: an elementary school student and you want to come by
• 3:17
Speaker 6: and see our classrooms, talk to instructors, and even go
• 3:21
Speaker 6: ahead and start thinking about, you know, where would I
• 3:24
Speaker 6: envision my student to be in the future? Come by
• 3:26
Speaker 6: and get a look at what we have to offer
• 3:28
Speaker 6: because it's really an amazing place.
• 3:30
Speaker 2: It is. It is very. I mean, and I'm there
• 3:33
Speaker 2: every year, you know, for this event. I'll be there
• 3:34
Speaker 2: next Thursday as well. But it really is amazing. And
• 3:37
Speaker 2: talk about how much emphasis... that Putnam County Schools puts
• 3:42
Speaker 2: on what goes on in that building and in other
• 3:45
  Speaker 2: areas too?
• 3:46
Speaker 6: Putnam County Schools, they support us 110%. It's really wonderful.
• 3:53
Speaker 6: They meet the needs that we have there for the students.
• 3:57
Speaker 6: And one thing we always try to do is put
• 3:59
Speaker 6: our students first. Our goal for students when they leave graduation,
• 4:05
Speaker 6: Putnam County graduates students 97, 98%. We've changed our motto.
• 4:10
Speaker 6: What we're doing is we want them employed, enrolled, or
• 4:13
Speaker 6: enlisted at graduation. We want them to have a clear
• 4:15
Speaker 6: path going forward, not just they graduated, great, we did
• 4:19
Speaker 6: our job. Our job's not done until they have a
• 4:22
Speaker 6: plan for the future.
• 4:23
Speaker 2: And what are some of the services or some of
• 4:26
Speaker 2: the curriculum, if you will, that goes on there?
• 4:29
Speaker 6: We have masonry, plumbing, electrical. We started a new sports
• 4:33
Speaker 6: medicine class this year. The sports medicine class, we've tied
• 4:37
Speaker 6: it with West Virginia State, and we're offering dual credit
• 4:39
Speaker 6: through that. We have a wonderful engineering program. We have
• 4:43
Speaker 6: nursing programs. We have law enforcement, diesel mechanic, auto body,
• 4:50
  Speaker 6: collision repair, HVAC.
• 4:54
  Speaker 2: We have a.
• 4:54
Speaker 6: Dental assisting classroom. We try to fill the niche from
• 5:00
Speaker 6: students who want to go straight into work to students
• 5:02
Speaker 6: who really want to excel in college.
• 5:05
Speaker 2: Morgan, I want to talk to you a moment about
• 5:07
Speaker 2: the Development Authority. Talk about your involvement with the things
• 5:10
Speaker 2: that go on there.
• 5:13
Speaker 7: We have recognized with existing companies that they're all looking
• 5:18
Speaker 7: for quality talent. They want people to... apply for the
• 5:24
Speaker 7: positions that they have available. And I'm so thankful to
• 5:27
Speaker 7: CD and Putnam County Schools for collaborating with us because
• 5:30
Speaker 7: what we saw a few years ago is that a
• 5:33
Speaker 7: lot of our students felt the need to leave the state.
• 5:36
Speaker 7: We would go into the schools, ask our junior seniors
• 5:39
Speaker 7: what they wanted to do. And a lot of them
• 5:41
Speaker 7: felt like they had to go to a university out
• 5:43
Speaker 7: of the state or go have a job out of
• 5:45
Speaker 7: the state. Without recognizing that we have a lot of
• 5:48
Speaker 7: businesses that are hiring. So we were able to see
• 5:51
Speaker 7: both sides of the fence, right? We would see inside
• 5:54
Speaker 7: the schools, hear our students say they were leaving. And
• 5:57
Speaker 7: then in the same day, go meet with companies that
• 6:00
Speaker 7: are aggressively trying to hire. So we recognize that there
• 6:04
  Speaker 7: isn't an opportunity problem. There's a communication problem. And that's
• 6:07
Speaker 7: whenever we set out with PCTC to try to talk
• 6:10
Speaker 7: through how many careers are right here in West Virginia.
• 6:14
Speaker 7: Good paying careers, a lot of them in trade skills.
• 6:18
Speaker 7: So really happy for the collaboration so that we can
• 6:21
Speaker 7: put on this event today. for anybody who has an
• 6:24
Speaker 7: interest in employment or education right here in Putnam County.
• 6:27
Speaker 2: And, C.D., I want to, for you to give us,
• 6:30
Speaker 2: obviously you don't have to give us names, but give
• 6:32
Speaker 2: us a couple. I mean, you've had so many of
• 6:34
Speaker 2: these success stories that you've had. Morgan, maybe you've got
• 6:36
Speaker 2: some too, but C.D., I'll start with you. Give me
• 6:38
Speaker 2: a couple success stories out of what you folks are doing.
• 6:40
Speaker 6: Oh, I mean, it's every year, and it's just so good.
• 6:45
Speaker 6: We look at students with our 4T program with Toyota.
• 6:49
Speaker 6: Students come in very shy, backward, very unsure of themselves.
• 6:55
Speaker 6: They'll come in to us as juniors, and then they
• 6:57
Speaker 6: get full employment. They get employed by Toyota. And from
• 7:02
Speaker 6: the backgrounds they came from, it's life-changing to that student.
• 7:05
Speaker 6: It is going to put them on a pathway and
• 7:09
Speaker 6: break them free of where they were. A partnership we
• 7:14
Speaker 6: have with Moses. We have students at Moses right now.
• 7:16
Speaker 6: I think probably any Moses automotive you go into, you
• 7:19
Speaker 6: want to find a PCTC student. If you go over
• 7:23
Speaker 6: to Parkline, there's so many students from PCTC working there,
• 7:32
Speaker 6: it's amazing. But these students are coming out and our
• 7:36
Speaker 6: first round of teacher prep students, they're now going to
• 7:39
Speaker 6: start subbing here pretty soon, second semester.
• 7:41
Speaker 2: And what age are we? I mean, here's what I
• 7:44
Speaker 2: want people to realize. A lot of us, you know,
• 7:47
Speaker 2: we went to college, you know, for a few years,
• 7:49
Speaker 2: graduated public school, went to college and did whatever. And
• 7:52
Speaker 2: it was maybe, if you're lucky, 10, 15 years, maybe
• 7:55
Speaker 2: 10 years. Until you can really start making money, doing
• 8:02
Speaker 2: what you want, you know, in careers that you like.
• 8:05
Speaker 2: These kids are coming right out of your center and
• 8:08
Speaker 2: are going to work making money that 40 and 45
• 8:11
Speaker 2: year olds wish they made.
• 8:12
Speaker 6: Yeah, we have some really talented students working at Moses.
• 8:15
  Speaker 6: I mean, they're clocking 80, 90 a year. at 20,
• 8:18
  Speaker 6: 21 years old.
• 8:19
Speaker 2: At 20 years old, I was lucky.
• 8:21
Speaker 8: I was in radio.
• 8:22
  Speaker 7: No debt.
• 8:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, and no debt, too.
• 8:24
  Speaker 9: Right.
• 8:24
Speaker 2: When I was 20 years old, I was lucky to
• 8:26
  Speaker 2: make $ 80 or $ 90 a year. I mean, let's be honest, $ 80, 000
• 8:31
Speaker 2: and $ 90, 000 at 20 years old. And as Morgan, to
• 8:33
Speaker 2: your point, no debt.
• 8:36
Speaker 7: Yeah, so we started an apprenticeship program a few years
• 8:38
Speaker 7: ago in collaboration with Toyota and Nucor, and it's a
• 8:42
Speaker 7: skilled maintenance apprenticeship. It's high-red, so it's post secondary education.
• 8:49
Speaker 7: But they're skilled maintenance technicians. So they're working on the
• 8:52
Speaker 7: robotics in these advanced manufacturing centers. And it's been so
• 8:57
Speaker 7: amazing to see these apprentices go through this program where
• 9:01
Speaker 7: they maybe otherwise would have left the state or gone
• 9:03
Speaker 7: into a different field.
• 9:04
Speaker 10: So they can go.
• 9:05
Speaker 7: To school two days a week at Bridge Valley, and
• 9:08
Speaker 7: then three days a week they work with a sponsor employer.
• 9:11
Speaker 7: And that sponsor employer is paying them $ 16 an hour
• 9:15
Speaker 7: or greater. Some of them are making up to $ 20
• 9:17
Speaker 7: an hour. They can also go to Bridge Valley completely
• 9:20
Speaker 7: for free for this program through different programs and grants.
• 9:25
Speaker 7: And they get out in two years. They have an
• 9:28
Speaker 7: associate's degree, two years of experience under their belt, no debt.
• 9:31
Speaker 7: They just got paid for two years' worth of work.
• 9:34
  Speaker 7: And to CD's point, they could get out making $ 60, 000, $ 70, 000, $ 80, 000
• 9:37
Speaker 7: in what, you're 21 years old? But to your point, Dave,
• 9:44
Speaker 7: you could be 50 years old in that program. You're
• 9:47
Speaker 7: in a job you don't like, or you went that
• 9:50
Speaker 7: path for college, and then you're recognizing that's not really
• 9:52
Speaker 7: what you want to do anymore. There are other options.
• 9:55
Speaker 7: You do not have to stay in what you're doing
• 9:59
Speaker 7: if it's not fulfilling or if you have an interest
• 10:01
  Speaker 7: in something else.
• 10:03
Speaker 2: And that's a very good point, Morgan. Thanks for, you know,
• 10:05
Speaker 2: we automatically think about these people that are going through
• 10:07
Speaker 2: this program as being young people, CD, but that's not
• 10:10
  Speaker 2: always the case.
• 10:12
Speaker 6: No, we have a practical nursing class. We have a
• 10:15
Speaker 6: medical assisting class for post-secondary. Uh, with the FAME program,
• 10:19
Speaker 6: there are people later in life going into that program now. Um, so,
• 10:24
Speaker 6: but when you look at it, you know, there, there's
• 10:26
Speaker 6: a lot of opportunity out here right now.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: All right. Now this open house, or I've, I've, I
• 10:30
Speaker 2: call it an open house. It's a, is that, is
• 10:32
Speaker 2: that the best way to describe it?
• 10:33
Speaker 6: No, cause open houses, no one comes to. Um, so
• 10:37
Speaker 6: we're trying to look at something a little more, um,
• 10:40
Speaker 6: If you're looking for a job, there's going to be
• 10:42
Speaker 6: employers there looking to hire people.
• 10:43
Speaker 2: And how many employers are going to be there approximately?
• 10:45
Speaker 6: We're right at 30 right now.
• 10:46
Speaker 2: I was going to say about 30.
• 10:47
Speaker 6: Yeah, and there's going to be people who start rolling
• 10:50
Speaker 6: in last minute, and that's fine. We'll take people. But
• 10:54
Speaker 6: if you're looking for a job, come by. If you're
• 10:55
Speaker 6: a student looking for an internship, we're going to have
• 10:57
Speaker 6: people there talking about internships. We're going to have– You know,
• 11:02
Speaker 6: if you're a parent wanting to bring a student by
• 11:04
Speaker 6: and talk to someone in the industry about where they
• 11:07
Speaker 6: work at, you have that ability at one place. You
• 11:12
Speaker 6: want to have that ability to not come by and
• 11:13
Speaker 6: just see the classrooms, but actually go out and talk
• 11:16
Speaker 6: to those employers and see what that industry is like.
• 11:20
Speaker 2: And, again, give us all the details as to where
• 11:24
Speaker 2: it is and when it is.
• 11:25
Speaker 6: 300 Roosevelt Boulevard, Putnam Career and Technical Center, next Thursday,
• 11:29
  Speaker 6: 530 to 8. We're going to have a taco bar
• 11:32
  Speaker 6: set up.
• 11:32
  Speaker 11: Nice.
• 11:32
Speaker 6: So there's going to be tacos and chocolate chip cookies,
• 11:36
Speaker 6: and no charge for that. Just come by and have
• 11:39
Speaker 6: a nice, enjoyable evening.
• 11:40
Speaker 2: And I'll mention I'll be there broadcasting live on our
• 11:42
Speaker 2: sister station, Superstar Country 96.1 KWS. I always look forward
• 11:46
Speaker 2: to it, not just the taco bar. I look forward
• 11:48
Speaker 2: to everything as part of it. And if people want
• 11:51
Speaker 2: to go on and find more information about it, social media, website?
• 11:55
Speaker 7: Yeah, they can go to PCDA.org on our Hometown Advantage page.
• 12:01
Speaker 7: They can also check out our social media pages, whether
• 12:04
Speaker 7: that be Putnam County Development Authority or Putnam Career and
• 12:06
Speaker 7: Technical Center for more event information.
• 12:09
Speaker 2: And it's all going on next Thursday. Guys, it's a
• 12:11
Speaker 2: great opportunity for people to come out, learn what you do.
• 12:14
Speaker 2: And if you're looking for a job, and I've seen it,
• 12:16
Speaker 2: I've been there all three years you've done this, broadcasting live.
• 12:19
Speaker 2: I've seen people come in with a resume in hand
• 12:24
Speaker 2: and walk out with a handshake and saying, hey, I'm
• 12:26
Speaker 2: going to work. You know, it's great stuff.
• 12:28
  Speaker 12: C.D.
• 12:29
Speaker 2: Caldwell, Morgan Tenney, appreciate you both being here. Thanks a lot.
• 12:32
  Speaker 6: Thank you, Dave.
• 12:32
  Speaker 7: Thank you, Dave.
• 12:34

• 12:57
Speaker 2: Putnam County, coming up a little bit later on the show.

Speaker 2: Also our good friends from other places in the building,

Speaker 2: them about that. Marjorie Cook is coming up in just

• 14:09
Speaker 13: are driving all day and all night. Injured in a

Speaker 2: Welcome to now our good friend Marjorie Cook from Advantage Valley.
• 15:49
Speaker 2: How are you doing, Marjorie? Welcome to the show.
• 15:51
  Speaker 16: I'm doing well.
• 15:51
Speaker 17: Thank you so much for having me.
• 15:53
Speaker 2: You folks have an event coming up Sunday at the
• 15:56
Speaker 2: Farmer's Market in South Charleston. I talked about it a
• 15:59
Speaker 2: little bit early in the week. Sean Zoniga from the
• 16:02
Speaker 2: city of South Charleston was here. It's called Taste of Appalachia.
• 16:04
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 16:05
Speaker 17: We are in our second year of this program. It
• 16:08
Speaker 17: is a program where we are lifting up small food manufacturers,
• 16:13
Speaker 17: small businesses, putting out really amazing products. And we have
• 16:18
Speaker 17: curated seven different boxes this year, curated boxes for purchase.
• 16:25
Speaker 17: It can be the holiday time. It could be the
• 16:27
Speaker 17: Thanksgiving holiday. It could be the Christmas holiday. But we
• 16:30
Speaker 17: have put together these boxes with themes and themed products of,
• 16:35
Speaker 17: you know, amazing, tasty things from, what is it now?
• 16:40
Speaker 17: It's 17 vendors across the Advantage Valley footprint. We've got
• 16:47
Speaker 17: folks from and then two vendors from a little bit
• 16:50
Speaker 17: farther flung in West Virginia. So we are helping get
• 16:54
Speaker 17: these products out there, getting some name recognition, letting people
• 16:58
Speaker 17: taste some of the incredible things that are made in
• 17:00
Speaker 17: our region. And last year, Dave, we sold 1,145 boxes,
• 17:04
Speaker 17: and we had 8,200 products sold. That was a direct
• 17:06
Speaker 17: producer revenue of over $ 60, 000. And that's huge for some
• 17:16
Speaker 17: of these small vendors. So our goal this year is
• 17:19
Speaker 17: to sell over 1,500 boxes.
• 17:20
Speaker 2: And what time do you start?
• 17:22
Speaker 17: Yeah, the event on Sunday, 1 to 4, October 18th,
• 17:26
Speaker 17: Sunday afternoon. Looks like we have great weather.
• 17:28
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 17:29
Speaker 17: We will have vendors, some of those vendors on hand
• 17:31
Speaker 17: to have their products. taste, sample, some product demonstrations. So
• 17:37
Speaker 17: you could buy individual products from them, or we have
• 17:40
Speaker 17: pre-made boxes that people can take with them and buy
• 17:43
  Speaker 17: and go.
• 17:44
Speaker 2: And what's the inspiration behind this? I mean, where did
• 17:48
Speaker 2: the idea come from to do this? And why is
• 17:50
  Speaker 2: it important?
• 17:51
  Speaker 13: Right.
• 17:51
Speaker 17: Well, Advantage Valley, from an organizational standpoint, we do work
• 17:55
Speaker 17: in three major buckets. We do business attraction to the
• 17:59
Speaker 17: Advantage Valley region. We do business retention, working with existing
• 18:03
Speaker 17: businesses to try to help them grow and scale. And
• 18:06
Speaker 17: we have an entrepreneurship program called Faster West Virginia. Some
• 18:10
Speaker 17: of these vendors have been through the FASTER program. We
• 18:14
Speaker 17: take some, you know, we work, have business coaches, three
• 18:17
Speaker 17: of them that work with these vendors, these small businesses
• 18:20
Speaker 17: that are trying to make more product, you know, maybe
• 18:23
Speaker 17: perhaps move out of their home kitchen to develop products
• 18:27
Speaker 17: and sell at a, And so our hope is to
• 18:33
Speaker 17: get some of these small businesses selling more products, get
• 18:36
Speaker 17: them in more stores, get them on more shelves, and
• 18:39
Speaker 17: really help boost the local economy by supporting the efforts
• 18:43
Speaker 17: of these smaller vendors.
• 18:45
Speaker 2: And these smaller vendors. I mean, we say small. It's
• 18:49
Speaker 2: not small to them because, I mean, for a lot
• 18:51
Speaker 2: of these, this is their career, this is their livelihood,
• 18:54
Speaker 2: but they're putting out some good stuff here in West Virginia.
• 18:57
Speaker 14: Absolutely. Well, it's interesting.
• 18:59
  Speaker 17: Our vendor mix, we've got some where it's a full-time
• 19:02
Speaker 17: gig plus, for example, a business you may very well
• 19:05
Speaker 17: have heard of, J.Q. Dickinson Salt.
• 19:07
  Speaker 2: I'm aware.
• 19:07
Speaker 17: We have a few of their products in our boxes,
• 19:09
Speaker 17: but we also have You know, someone who does this
• 19:12
Speaker 17: as a side gig. You know, we have We Be Fryin'.
• 19:16
Speaker 17: They cook out of their home. They have incredibly good snacks,
• 19:19
Speaker 17: and those are— I love the name.
• 19:20
  Speaker 18: Yeah.
• 19:22
Speaker 17: And they actually make wheat products, wheat products that mimic
• 19:27
Speaker 17: pork rinds. So you're not eating pork rinds, but they
• 19:30
Speaker 17: taste divine. And they are sold in many, many venues,
• 19:34
Speaker 17: especially— I' ve seen them at Capital Market. That's where I buy mine.
• 19:37
Speaker 17: So we have— Seven different themes this year. We've got
• 19:41
Speaker 17: West Virginia favorites. We've got breakfast essential box. We've got
• 19:44
Speaker 17: a Mountain State snack attack gift set. That's my favorite.
• 19:48
Speaker 17: Barbecue essentials. sweet and salty, veteran made gift set. All
• 19:53
Speaker 17: products from veteran owned and veteran run small businesses. We're
• 19:57
Speaker 17: really excited about that one. And then this year we
• 20:00
Speaker 17: have new, Dave, we have a Appalachia bark box. We
• 20:04
Speaker 17: have a box for dogs.
• 20:05
  Speaker 9: Nice.
• 20:07
Speaker 17: So come out this Sunday. There are many ways to
• 20:10
Speaker 17: buy these boxes. You can come and buy some pre-made.
• 20:13
Speaker 17: We have a limited number for sale on Sunday, but
• 20:16
Speaker 17: we also have them for sale at tasteofappalachia.com. We have
• 20:20
Speaker 17: an online portal to be able to buy. You can
• 20:25
Speaker 17: buy any boxes now through November 23rd. Corporate boxes can
• 20:31
Speaker 17: be purchased through November 10th. So corporations can curate their
• 20:36
Speaker 17: own boxes, which we've had some success with last year.
• 20:40
  Speaker 14: Fantastic.
• 20:41
Speaker 2: I love that idea.
• 20:41
  Speaker 18: Yeah.
• 20:42
Speaker 17: Huge shout out to Thrasher Engineering. They bought 700 boxes
• 20:45
  Speaker 17: last year.
• 20:46
  Speaker 19: 700?
• 20:46
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 20:47
Speaker 17: Thrasher set the bar very high, and we are very grateful.
• 20:51
Speaker 17: They're with us again this year, but we would love
• 20:53
Speaker 17: to have more corporations putting some of their own merch
• 20:56
Speaker 17: in a box, letting us put some products, all the
• 21:00
Speaker 17: products they like. We will do that for more than
• 21:02
Speaker 17: 10 boxes. We will curate a corporate box for you.
• 21:06
  Speaker 7: Nice.
• 21:06
  Speaker 2: That's good stuff.
• 21:07
  Speaker 20: All right.
• 21:08
Speaker 2: Where can people learn about the box? I know we're
• 21:10
Speaker 2: talking about this particular event, but this is going to
• 21:11
Speaker 2: go beyond that. Where can people learn more about the boxes?
• 21:14
  Speaker 20: Right.
• 21:14
Speaker 17: Well, you can come see them this Sunday.
• 21:16
Speaker 2: That'd be a good thing to do, Dave.
• 21:17
Speaker 17: But you can read about all the boxes and shop, again,
• 21:20
Speaker 17: at tasteofappalachia.com. If you can't remember that, come check it
• 21:25
Speaker 17: out on the Advantage Valley website.
• 21:26
  Speaker 20: Mm-hmm.
• 21:28
Speaker 17: And again, this weekend, we've got a lot of fun
• 21:30
Speaker 17: and those vendors will be there and it looks like
• 21:31
Speaker 17: the sun's going to be shining.
• 21:33
  Speaker 2: It's going to be cool, but it's a farmer's market
• 21:36
Speaker 2: in fall. It's supposed to be cool.
• 21:37
  Speaker 12: Exactly.
• 21:38
Speaker 17: And doesn't everyone still need their mums and their pumpkins
• 21:41
Speaker 17: to walk around and taste good food on a Sunday afternoon?
• 21:43
Speaker 2: All right. Hey, Marjorie, it's always a pleasure to have
• 21:45
Speaker 2: you on the show. Thanks a lot. Marjorie Cook from
• 21:47
Speaker 2: Advantage Valley. The big event is happening at South Charleston
• 21:50
Speaker 2: Farmer's Market this coming Sunday. Appreciate it. Thanks a lot.
• 21:53
Speaker 2: All right. Ryan, we're going to kind of pivot here
• 21:56
  Speaker 2: a little bit.
• 21:56
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 21:57
Speaker 2: So I think we have some other guests that I
• 22:00
Speaker 2: forgot about that I booked. I think Jared is out
• 22:04
Speaker 2: in the hall. If Jared wants to go ahead and
• 22:05
Speaker 2: bring them in now. Marjorie, I appreciate you being here.
• 22:07
Speaker 2: This is like a revolving door here. You know what
• 22:09
  Speaker 2: I mean? It's like.
• 22:12
Speaker 2: So we'll go ahead and bring those folks in here.
• 22:13
Speaker 2: In the meantime, I will tell you that coming up
• 22:15
Speaker 2: later today on Metro News Midday 13 News and tonight
• 22:18
Speaker 2: live anchor Amanda Barron and me will be in with
• 22:21
Speaker 2: the show today. Hoppy Kerchival, the GOAT, is going to
• 22:23
Speaker 2: stop by the show coming up later on today. Of course,
• 22:26
Speaker 2: Jeff Jenkins will have the news. Jack Carlson will be
• 22:28
Speaker 2: stopping by and more. That's all coming up on Metro
• 22:31
Speaker 2: News Midday. As I said, it's a work in progress
• 22:33
Speaker 2: because sometimes, well, I'm old and I forget things. So
• 22:36
Speaker 2: go ahead and have a seat here, guys. And I
• 22:39
Speaker 2: owe you, sir, an apology. I completely owe you an
• 22:42
Speaker 2: apology because, you know, I have so many people. Are
• 22:45
Speaker 2: you going to go on the air with us? If so,
• 22:47
Speaker 2: we need you to move that microphone in front of
• 22:48
Speaker 2: you there, if you would. All right. So tell everybody
• 22:50
  Speaker 2: your name.
• 22:51
Speaker 14: Hey, everybody. I'm Jeff Priest.
• 22:53
Speaker 2: You are indeed. And you are?
• 22:54
Speaker 9: I am Danielle Monk.
• 22:56
Speaker 2: Okay. And you guys are with First Tee, West Virginia.
• 22:58
  Speaker 20: Yes.
• 22:59
Speaker 2: I apologize because you'd reached out to me. You're exactly right.
• 23:02
  Speaker 2: And I said, sure. And I don't, I have a
• 23:04
Speaker 2: giant calendar and I have a phone and I have
• 23:07
Speaker 2: a laptop and somehow it didn't make any of the
• 23:10
Speaker 2: three of them, but I'm glad you're here. And I
• 23:12
Speaker 2: want to talk about First Tee and talk about what
• 23:13
Speaker 2: you got going on. Jeff, go ahead.
• 23:14
Speaker 14: Hey, first off you owe us no apology, Dave. You're
• 23:17
Speaker 14: the man. So thanks for having us on. Thanks for
• 23:19
  Speaker 14: Danielle being here.
• 23:20
Speaker 10: So we run all these fundraisers throughout the year for
• 23:22
Speaker 10: our First Tee program and all the golf tournaments through
• 23:25
Speaker 10: the WGA. But this is one we started four years ago.
• 23:27
  Speaker 10: It's called the Par-Tee A fundraiser. It's a gala-style event,
• 23:32
Speaker 10: but you don't have to dress up. You can wear
• 23:34
Speaker 10: your cowboy boots, your hat, jeans if you want. And
• 23:38
Speaker 10: it's more of a concert-style feel. Have drinks, dancing. And
• 23:42
Speaker 10: when and where? November 7th, Embassy Suites here in Charleston.
• 23:45
Speaker 10: So it's a fun time. And Danielle can add anything
• 23:48
  Speaker 10: she wants to.
• 23:49
  Speaker 2: Danielle?
• 23:49
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a fun event. We wanted to do something
• 23:53
Speaker 5: a little different here in Charleston. We have so many
• 23:54
Speaker 5: galas here. So we wanted to make it a little
• 23:57
Speaker 5: bit different and just have a good time. not so
• 24:00
Speaker 5: dressed up and just a little bit more casual and
• 24:03
  Speaker 5: just welcome everyone.
• 24:05
Speaker 2: And it's going to be November the 7th?
• 24:07
Speaker 14: November 7th, Embassy Suites.
• 24:09
Speaker 2: All right. So if people want to get involved in this,
• 24:10
Speaker 2: are tickets already on sale now?
• 24:13
Speaker 10: Yeah, tickets are on sale. Sponsorships are still available. You
• 24:16
Speaker 10: can go to our website, firsttwestvirginia.org, click on events, click
• 24:20
Speaker 10: on Part C. There's all the event details there. You
• 24:22
Speaker 10: can reach out to us at the WGA, telephone number 304-391-5000.
• 24:28
Speaker 10: But it's fun. We're going to have Travis Tritt's daughter
• 24:30
Speaker 10: is going to be there, Tyler Reese Tritt. She's coming
• 24:32
Speaker 10: in from Georgia to play.
• 24:33
  Speaker 2: Nice.
• 24:34
Speaker 10: And then we'll have an opener, Josh Pantry. Josh is
• 24:38
Speaker 10: the man. He played for us last year. So it's fun.
• 24:41
Speaker 10: Talk about the group, First Tee.
• 24:44
  Speaker 2: Talk about this.
• 24:45
  Speaker 14: Yeah.
• 24:45
Speaker 10: So First Tee, we teach kids the game of golf
• 24:48
Speaker 10: and character education. At the WGA, we operate the First
• 24:51
Speaker 10: Tee of West Virginia.
• 24:52
Speaker 2: That's West Virginia Golf Association.
• 24:53
Speaker 14: Yes. But the First Tee is started by the PGA
• 24:56
  Speaker 14: Tour Foundation.
• 24:56
Speaker 10: So there's 104. 50 first tees across the world. And
• 25:00
Speaker 10: we're teaching kids golf and character education. We teach it
• 25:03
Speaker 10: at nine golf courses across the state. And our program
• 25:05
Speaker 10: is implemented in over 225 elementary and middle schools across
• 25:09
Speaker 10: the state right now.
• 25:10
Speaker 2: And what is it that is so important about this
• 25:13
Speaker 2: program and teaching these young kids about the game of golf?
• 25:15
Speaker 2: Because as you said, it's not just that you can
• 25:17
Speaker 2: take golf lessons anyway.
• 25:18
  Speaker 1: Sure.
• 25:18
Speaker 2: It's not what that's about. there's some of that, but
• 25:21
Speaker 2: it's also about teaching other things. You mentioned character. We're
• 25:25
Speaker 2: not only teaching golf, but character education. So every, you know,
• 25:28
Speaker 2: golf lesson or, you know, day they come to it,
• 25:31
Speaker 2: whether it's in the school or at the golf course,
• 25:34
Speaker 2: they're learning about golf, but they're learning about, you know, respect,
• 25:37
Speaker 2: responsibility or sportsmanship. And there are several other things that
• 25:41
Speaker 2: they learn as well, but we also have bridge to life.
• 25:43
Speaker 2: How do you take what you learn here? You know, Hey,
• 25:45
Speaker 2: being respectful of the golf course, fixing the divots and
• 25:47
Speaker 2: you know, being respectful of your other playing partners. But
• 25:51
Speaker 2: how can you be respectful in the community to your
• 25:53
Speaker 2: parents at school? That's what I was going to say, Jeff.
• 25:55
Speaker 2: Those are life lessons. It's not just about fixing the
• 25:59
Speaker 2: divots and things like that. It is, but it's not
• 26:01
Speaker 2: because if you're out on the golf course and you're
• 26:05
Speaker 2: not respectful, you're probably not going to be respectful at
• 26:06
Speaker 2: the supermarket or on the job site or whatever.
• 26:09
Speaker 10: Yeah, so we just want to try to build better
• 26:12
Speaker 10: people in our community starting from a young age and
• 26:15
Speaker 10: learning the core values and life lessons. So it's really good.
• 26:20
Speaker 10: So we're really teaching life skills through golf. And some
• 26:22
Speaker 10: of these kids continue to play golf or play competitively
• 26:24
Speaker 10: and go on to play college and some play recreationally
• 26:27
Speaker 10: and some may never play again, but they're going to
• 26:28
Speaker 10: learn life skills through our program.
• 26:30
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 26:30
Speaker 2: And Danielle, talk about, you want to add anything to them?
• 26:34
Speaker 5: I think one of the things that we kind of
• 26:36
Speaker 5: overlook sometimes is that the First Tee program offers the
• 26:39
Speaker 5: game of golf to kids that wouldn't always have that
• 26:42
Speaker 5: opportunity to play golf. I think that's a really big
• 26:44
Speaker 5: thing for financial reasons or, You know, maybe it's just
• 26:48
Speaker 5: something that their family wasn't into. So I think, first,
• 26:50
Speaker 5: he offers the game of golf to a lot of
• 26:53
Speaker 5: youth that wouldn't have that opportunity.
• 26:54
Speaker 2: And the thing about golf is, if you get them
• 26:56
Speaker 2: started young, as you said, it's not a cheap sport, okay?
• 26:59
  Speaker 5: But, you know.
• 27:01
Speaker 2: If they're out there playing for fun, it can be
• 27:06
Speaker 2: expensive as far as the clubs and stuff go. But
• 27:08
Speaker 2: I mean, there's not a lot of other expenses that
• 27:11
Speaker 2: go into it. So maybe it's not as expensive as
• 27:13
Speaker 2: what I just said it was. But as you said,
• 27:16
  Speaker 2: it's not a rich person's game. And that's what you're
• 27:20
Speaker 2: trying to do. You're trying to get it. You don't
• 27:22
Speaker 2: have to be the biggest kid in the world. You
• 27:23
Speaker 2: don't have to be the fastest boy or girl in
• 27:25

• 27:27
  Speaker 20: Yes.
• 27:28
Speaker 5: And to go back to the party, that's, you know,
• 27:31
Speaker 5: this fundraiser helps us provide the golf to these kids.
• 27:37
Speaker 5: So if they can't afford it, you know, it helps
• 27:40
Speaker 5: us provide scholarships for participation and other, you know, any
• 27:44
Speaker 5: type of equipment that we need. So that's what this
• 27:46
Speaker 5: fundraiser is helping us do year after year.
• 27:48
  Speaker 14: All right.
• 27:48
Speaker 2: Give us all the details as far as the time
• 27:50
Speaker 2: and the place again where people can get tickets and
• 27:52
Speaker 2: sponsorships are still available, right?
• 27:53
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 27:54
Speaker 14: Sponsorships are still available.
• 27:56
  Speaker 2: Thank Tori.

Speaker 14: And you can find all the event details, sponsorships, and
• 28:12
Speaker 14: tickets you can purchase online.
• 28:13
Speaker 2: And as you said, there are a lot of galas.
• 28:15
Speaker 2: We're going to be talking about one a little bit
• 28:16
Speaker 2: later on the show. That's all well and good. But
• 28:18
Speaker 2: you don't have to. I mean, if you want to
• 28:20
Speaker 2: dress to the nines, you can. But if you want
• 28:22
Speaker 2: to wear your cowboy boots, you can do that as well.
• 28:24
Speaker 2: And bring Travis Tritt's daughter in here, which Josh Pantry Country,
• 28:28
  Speaker 2: I mean, he's fantastic.
• 28:29
  Speaker 14: It's fun.
• 28:30
Speaker 2: Have a great night of music, great night of fun,
• 28:32
Speaker 2: and then raising a little bit of money, too. Hey, Jeff, again,
• 28:34
Speaker 2: I apologize. You know, so, Danielle.
• 28:37
  Speaker 9: Do not apologize.
• 28:38
  Speaker 8: No need.
• 28:39
Speaker 2: Danielle's thinking, what is wrong with this guy?
• 28:41
Speaker 16: No, listen, we are in the same boat.
• 28:43
Speaker 5: We have calendars. We have the phones.
• 28:45
Speaker 9: We have it all. So we get it.
• 28:46
Speaker 2: It doesn't happen. Ryan will tell you, producer, it doesn't
• 28:48
Speaker 2: happen that often with me. Maybe once a week. No,
• 28:53
Speaker 2: it's not that awful. But I appreciate you being good sports.
• 28:55
Speaker 2: Appreciate you sticking around a little bit. And let's do this.
• 28:59
Speaker 2: And I promise, let's have you back on again before
• 29:02
Speaker 2: the event. We would love to. Thank you. And get
• 29:05
Speaker 2: with me later. And I will ride it across my forehead.
• 29:09
Speaker 2: All right. And we'll have you on again before the event. Okay, guys.
• 29:11
Speaker 6: I appreciate you being here.
• 29:12
Speaker 14: Thank you for having us, Dave.
• 29:13
Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. There is a big reveal, speaking of Gators,
• 29:16
Speaker 2: we were earlier happening tonight at Prime 101 for Carnival.

Speaker 2: the studio this morning, hope she'll choose her, is circuit
• 32:30
Speaker 2: judge in Putnam County. It's Chris Raines.
• 32:32
  Speaker 1: Good morning.
• 32:32
  Speaker 8: How you doing?
• 32:32
  Speaker 6: Good morning.
• 32:33
Speaker 2: So how did the opening come about for this particular position?
• 32:36
Speaker 16: So my former boss, Mark Sorcea, who was the prosecutor
• 32:41
Speaker 16: of Putnam County for 26 years, had the opportunity to
• 32:45
Speaker 16: be appointed in 2022 as And he stepped down for
• 32:49
Speaker 16: health reasons. And so there is a vacancy. And due
• 32:55
Speaker 16: to the timing of him filing and resigning, it will
• 33:00
Speaker 16: go on the ballot for November.
• 33:02
Speaker 2: Okay. And give us the bio on Chris Raines. I mean,
• 33:04
Speaker 2: because you... you're sitting prosecuting attorney, but take us when
• 33:07
Speaker 2: you were two and on up. I was born when
• 33:11
Speaker 2: I was very young.
• 33:11
Speaker 16: I was born, uh, I was born a Putnam County child. Um, yeah,
• 33:15
Speaker 16: I'm the only, uh, Putnam County native in this race. Um,
• 33:18
Speaker 16: I was born and raised in Putnam County, graduated from
• 33:21
Speaker 16: Buffalo high school, went to Marshall university, um, went to
• 33:25
Speaker 16: your university of Akron for law school, um, and started
• 33:28
  Speaker 16: my career there.
• 33:29
  Speaker 2: I was a zip.
• 33:30
Speaker 16: Um, Then worked there for about six and a half
• 33:33
Speaker 16: years in their prosecutor's office. I'm a career prosecutor for
• 33:36
Speaker 16: 26 years. Learned how to drive again. Moved back to
• 33:40
Speaker 16: West Virginia. Just kidding.
• 33:41
  Speaker 2: Just kidding, Ohio.
• 33:42
Speaker 16: Just kidding, Buckeyes. And anyway, moved back 20 years ago.
• 33:47
Speaker 16: Worked as a federal prosecutor for a while, special assistant U.S.
• 33:51
  Speaker 2: Attorney.
• 33:52
Speaker 16: And then been in Putnam County since 2008. I was
• 33:57
Speaker 16: a line prosecutor for about 15 years and I've been
• 34:00
Speaker 16: the elected prosecutor for since 2023. So with all of that,
• 34:04
Speaker 16: why do you want to be judge? So I think
• 34:06
Speaker 16: that I have something to add. I mean, as a prosecutor,
• 34:09
Speaker 16: my ethical duty wasn't just to get convictions. It was
• 34:12
Speaker 16: to do justice. So I've been able to look at
• 34:15
Speaker 16: both sides of the cases, try to do the right thing.
• 34:18
Speaker 16: And now I'd like to take my experience up to
• 34:21
Speaker 16: the bench. I think I'm ready.
• 34:22
Speaker 2: Talk about the, Chris, the bulk of the cases that
• 34:26
Speaker 2: a judge would see these days. Because, I mean, let's
• 34:29
Speaker 2: face it, we all watch the courtroom dramas on television.
• 34:32
Speaker 2: That's not anywhere remotely close. Any attorney will tell you that.
• 34:35
Speaker 2: Any judge will tell you that. Prosecutor or whatever will
• 34:37
Speaker 2: tell you that. What are the cases that a judge
• 34:42
  Speaker 2: typically sees?
• 34:43
Speaker 16: So they see criminal cases. They see civil cases, juvenile cases,
• 34:47
Speaker 16: abuse and neglect. But I do want to make it
• 34:49
Speaker 16: clear that that if I am blessed enough to win
• 34:51
Speaker 16: this election and move up to the bench, that any
• 34:55
Speaker 16: case that I've had any hand in as far as prosecution,
• 35:00
Speaker 16: if I've signed the indictment, if there's been an investigation
• 35:03
Speaker 16: while I was prosecutor, I won't get that case. Those
• 35:06
Speaker 16: will be screened off and sent to the other judge.
• 35:10
Speaker 16: So for about maybe the next year, six months to
• 35:14
Speaker 16: a year, I may not hear very many at all
• 35:18
Speaker 16: criminal cases. But the majority of the cases I think
• 35:23
Speaker 16: that a circuit judge hears these days are abuse and
• 35:27
Speaker 16: neglect cases. I mean, with addiction crisis in our state.
• 35:31
Speaker 16: I think that there are two high schools in our
• 35:34
Speaker 16: county that anywhere from one-third to one-half of the students
• 35:38
Speaker 16: are being raised by grandparents or foster parents or something
• 35:42
Speaker 16: like that. So all of those people usually have an
• 35:45
Speaker 16: abuse and neglect case. They're overseen by a court to
• 35:48
Speaker 16: make sure that those kids don't fall through the cracks.
• 35:52
Speaker 2: As a prosecutor, How does that lend itself to being judge?
• 35:57
Speaker 2: I mean, because you've got that experience as a prosecutor.
• 36:00
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 36:00
Speaker 16: Well, I've been immersed in the judicial culture over the
• 36:05
Speaker 16: last two decades in Putnam County. I know how things
• 36:09
Speaker 16: are run. I know how the cases are run. I
• 36:11
Speaker 16: know that we keep a very tight docket. We don't
• 36:15
Speaker 16: like to see cases linger forever on our dockets. We
• 36:19
Speaker 16: like to move them along. We like to have people
• 36:22
Speaker 16: have as swift justice as we can. And so that's,
• 36:27
Speaker 16: you know, and again, my ethical duty as a prosecutor
• 36:30
Speaker 16: was to do justice, not just to make sure that
• 36:34
Speaker 16: the state always wins, but also to make sure that
• 36:39
Speaker 16: the fairest thing is being done among all the parties.
• 36:43
Speaker 16: And I think that is the quality that lends itself
• 36:45
Speaker 16: most to the judicial race.
• 36:47
Speaker 2: Talking to Chris Raines, again, candidate for Circuit Judge, Putnam County, 944.
• 36:51
Speaker 2: The Dave Allen Show on 580 Live is brought to

• 37:01
Speaker 2: pickup at hustonspizza.com. We had a text here. Somebody wanted
• 37:04
Speaker 2: to know if you're related to a former Putnam County
• 37:06
  Speaker 2: fire marshal.
• 37:07
  Speaker 9: No.
• 37:08
Speaker 16: That is a different family. My dad was named Rudy Raines, but...
• 37:14
Speaker 16: He was the Rudy Raines that was a schoolteacher, a
• 37:16
Speaker 16: basketball coach, but that is another Rudy Raines, not relation.
• 37:22
Speaker 2: Not the same man. Correct. How's the campaign been?
• 37:25
Speaker 16: It's been fun, actually. I mean, not all of it,
• 37:29
Speaker 16: of course, but my time is— not spent crocheting and
• 37:34
Speaker 16: petting my dog a lot. It's going out and meeting people,
• 37:37
Speaker 16: but I've been meeting a lot of people. Everybody has
• 37:41
Speaker 16: been very receptive, very nice, and I've met some other
• 37:44
Speaker 16: cute dogs that I've got to pet.
• 37:46
Speaker 2: You are an animal.
• 37:47
  Speaker 16: I'm a dog person.
• 37:49
Speaker 2: When you have talked to people, whether you're at a
• 37:52
Speaker 2: campaign event or just however you're campaigning, what do you
• 37:56
Speaker 2: hear from the public?
• 37:57
Speaker 16: I think they just want fairness. I think that they
• 38:00
Speaker 16: just want to know that they're going to get a
• 38:03
Speaker 16: fair shot, that I'm not just going to always side
• 38:06
Speaker 16: with the police. I'm not always going to side with
• 38:09
Speaker 16: the defense. I'm not going to be one-sided, but I'm
• 38:12
Speaker 16: going to hear them out and I'm going to make
• 38:14
Speaker 16: a fair call and a fair shot. And I think
• 38:17
Speaker 16: that I can definitely tell people that that's what I'm
• 38:20
  Speaker 16: willing to do.
• 38:21
Speaker 2: Putnam County has got a long line of very, very
• 38:26
Speaker 2: well-known and very well-respected judges that go back years and
• 38:30
Speaker 2: years and years. How do you feel about possibly, if
• 38:35
Speaker 2: you're lucky enough to be elected, adding your name to
• 38:37
Speaker 2: that list of the ones that have been there before you?
• 38:39
Speaker 16: They're huge shoes to fill. I cut my teeth on
• 38:43
Speaker 16: some pretty tough judges in Ohio, but then when I
• 38:46
Speaker 16: came to West Virginia— Judge Spalding will put me through
• 38:49
Speaker 16: the ringer a little bit, but, you know, it always
• 38:51
Speaker 16: taught me to be prepared. And he kept you, but
• 38:55
Speaker 16: you also had to stay on your feet. He liked
• 38:58
Speaker 16: to debate. And you better know your case. You better
• 39:01
Speaker 16: know your law. And always be prepared. And I think
• 39:05
Speaker 16: that's carried me through my legal career. But Judge Holliday,
• 39:09
Speaker 16: I was blessed to– I did a trial with him
• 39:13
Speaker 16: when he was 85 years old, and he was right
• 39:16
Speaker 16: as rain. I mean, he was a wonderful judge to
• 39:19
Speaker 16: practice in front of.
• 39:20
Speaker 2: Do you have a website or Facebook where can people learn.
• 39:22
  Speaker 16: More about you?
• 39:23
  Speaker 19: I do.
• 39:23
  Speaker 18: Yes.
• 39:23
  Speaker 16: It's www.raines, R-A-Y-N-E-S, the number four. and judge.com.
• 39:30
Speaker 2: All right. So I do this with every candidate. I
• 39:34
Speaker 2: call it the final 30. 30 seconds, not time. Why
• 39:38
Speaker 2: should someone choose Chris Raines on Election Day?
• 39:41
Speaker 16: Well, as I mentioned, I'm the only Putnam County native.
• 39:44
Speaker 16: That's my community. That's where I've worked for the last
• 39:47
Speaker 16: two decades. And I have skin in the game. I've
• 39:52
Speaker 16: been immersed in the judicial culture, and I've been practicing
• 39:57
Speaker 16: protecting the most vulnerable citizens of Putnam County for the
• 40:00
Speaker 16: last 18 years. I hope that you'll elect me to
• 40:03
Speaker 16: the bench where I can continue that fight.
• 40:06
Speaker 2: Chris Raines, candidate for Putnam County Circuit Judge. I appreciate
• 40:10
  Speaker 2: you being here.
• 40:10
  Speaker 14: Thank you, Dave.

• 43:33
Speaker 14: I think that's the nicest thing he's ever said about us.
• 43:34
Speaker 9: It is literally the nicest. Usually I get called a
• 43:37
  Speaker 9: sales weasel.
• 43:38
Speaker 2: She told me I was not allowed to call her
• 43:39
  Speaker 2: sales weasel.
• 43:40
  Speaker 20: No.
• 43:40
Speaker 2: She doesn't like it.
• 43:41
  Speaker 9: I'm a marketing consultant.
• 43:43
  Speaker 2: That's right.
• 43:44
  Speaker 14: Sales weasel.
• 43:45
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 43:46
  Speaker 18: All right.
• 43:46
Speaker 2: So what brings you guys here? I mean, big doings
• 43:49
  Speaker 2: downtown tonight?
• 43:50
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 43:50
Speaker 9: So Logan and I are here to talk about Carnival.
• 43:54
Speaker 9: It's the largest fundraiser the Clay Center puts on. And
• 43:57
Speaker 9: tonight is our big theme reveal.
• 43:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's going to be a great time.
• 44:01
  Speaker 8: Prime 101, 5 to 7 p.m. The announcement happens about
• 44:04
  Speaker 8: 6 o'clock.
• 44:05
Speaker 9: Yeah, so we would like, if you guys can be
• 44:07
Speaker 9: there between 5 and 6, that would be great. At
• 44:11
Speaker 9: 6 o'clock, we are doing a countdown. and doing the
• 44:14
Speaker 9: major announcement. And that's always a big... It's huge because
• 44:19
Speaker 9: a lot of people, as you heard, Rudy Raines loves
• 44:21
Speaker 9: to dress up for the event. We love to dress
• 44:23
Speaker 9: up for the event. And it's the largest fundraiser the
• 44:25
Speaker 9: Clay Center puts on.
• 44:27
Speaker 2: This is the big... This is the Mac Daddy. This
• 44:28
Speaker 2: is the big one.
• 44:29
Speaker 9: It's the Mac Daddy. And all of the.
• 44:31
Speaker 2: I like to keep my references topical.
• 44:33
  Speaker 17: 1995.
• 44:33
  Speaker 2: I want.
• 44:36
Speaker 9: To mention though, because this is so important, it's the
• 44:38
Speaker 9: largest fundraiser they do. And all of the money... that
• 44:42
Speaker 9: we make on this event goes back into STEM education
• 44:45
Speaker 9: programs for kids across the state of West Virginia, not
• 44:48
Speaker 9: just here in Kanawha County.
• 44:50
  Speaker 2: Plus, it's just a fun night. I mean, everybody, we'll
• 44:54
Speaker 2: find out what the theme is tonight, as you said, Bobby,
• 44:56
Speaker 2: around six or so, but it's just a, It's one
• 44:58
Speaker 2: of those premier events that everybody looks forward to, Logan.
• 45:01
Speaker 8: Yeah, and it's a great networking event. Food, drinks, music,
• 45:04
Speaker 8: the atmosphere. The place is always decked out to the theme.
• 45:08
Speaker 8: It's a very great night for the Clay Center.
• 45:11
Speaker 9: Yeah, we have a wonderful group of volunteers. They're called
• 45:13
Speaker 9: the Friends of Clay. I've been on the board for
• 45:16
Speaker 9: 10 years now. I am co-chairing the event this year.
• 45:18
Speaker 9: The food that will be provided, unlimited amounts of food
• 45:23
  Speaker 9: and beverages.
• 45:24
Speaker 2: Why did you look at me when you said that?
• 45:25
  Speaker 20: 10-10.
• 45:25
  Speaker 8: 10-10.
• 45:27
Speaker 9: We partner with Chef Paul Smith, wonderful human being here
• 45:31
Speaker 9: in our community, and they go all out on the
• 45:35
Speaker 9: food there at the event. It's just absolutely delicious.
• 45:38
Speaker 8: Yeah, and some other sponsors and people that make this happen,
• 45:41
Speaker 8: DJ EJ, Prime 101, Chris Goss' Photography, 218 Geraniums, E-Steps,
• 45:47
Speaker 8: and Tony the Tailor.
• 45:48
Speaker 9: Yeah, and don't forget Charlie Boutique.
• 45:50
  Speaker 14: Charlie Boutique.
• 45:51
Speaker 9: They're the ones who dress me. And we had an
• 45:53
Speaker 9: amazing group of, I don't know, glam squad, we call them,
• 45:56
Speaker 9: that came in to help us do the photo shoot.
• 46:00
Speaker 9: And you guys are going to see some of those
• 46:02
Speaker 9: photos tonight. Come down to Prom 101 from 5 to 7.
• 46:05
Speaker 9: We announce the theme at 6 o'clock.
• 46:07
Speaker 8: And there's also a special going on as well. So
• 46:11
Speaker 8: it's the first 50 tickets purchased. They're going to run
• 46:15
  Speaker 8: 125 apiece.
• 46:17
  Speaker 17: Nice.
• 46:17
  Speaker 9: It's a steal.
• 46:18
Speaker 14: It is a steal.
• 46:19
Speaker 12: Steal of a deal.
• 46:19
Speaker 2: It is a steal of a deal. And again, as
• 46:21
Speaker 2: I said, guys, this is just one of those big
• 46:23
Speaker 2: events that Charleston and the surrounding areas really show up for.
• 46:28
Speaker 2: What is it? Turn out?
• 46:30
  Speaker 1: Turn up?
• 46:30
Speaker 9: Turn it out and turn up.
• 46:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Is that what they do? Turn out and
• 46:34
Speaker 2: turn up. I think that's dated a little bit now.
• 46:37
  Speaker 11: Groovy.
• 46:37
Speaker 9: We will consider the audience.
• 46:40
  Speaker 11: Right.
• 46:41
  Speaker 20: What?
• 46:42
Speaker 2: Consider the host. I don't know what that means. All right.
• 46:45
Speaker 2: Give us all the details again because, Logan, I've got
• 46:47
Speaker 2: something else I want to talk to you about.
• 46:48
  Speaker 20: Sure.
• 46:48
  Speaker 2: But go ahead.
• 46:49
  Speaker 8: It's at Prime 101, the Carnival 2027 theme reveal, 5
• 46:52
  Speaker 8: to 7 p.m.
• 46:53
Speaker 2: In Carnival. Go ahead and pin it on your calendars,
• 46:55
Speaker 2: the date for that.
• 46:56
Speaker 9: Carnival is going to be January 30th.
• 46:58
Speaker 2: All right. All right, so I got to ask you,
• 47:02
Speaker 2: when does V100 start playing Christmas music? Oh, my goodness.
• 47:05
Speaker 8: It happens Friday, November 20th at 9 a.m. We flip
• 47:09
Speaker 8: the big old switch.
• 47:10
Speaker 2: Because I know you have been, your office is very
• 47:12
Speaker 2: close to mine, and you've been jingling and jangling in
• 47:16
Speaker 2: there for some time.
• 47:17
Speaker 14: Yeah, people think we just flip the switch.
• 47:18
Speaker 8: No, I start at the end of August looking at,
• 47:21
Speaker 8: you know, data, song data, work on the imaging, the
• 47:24
Speaker 8: jingles that happen in between songs.
• 47:25
Speaker 14: So it's not just we flip the switch. It's... It's
• 47:28
Speaker 14: a couple months of preparation.
• 47:30
Speaker 9: And you guys are doing something a little different this year.
• 47:33
  Speaker 11: We are?
• 47:33
Speaker 9: Yeah. Won't you be downtown?
• 47:36
  Speaker 20: Oh.
• 47:38
Speaker 9: Holly Jolly Brawley preparation.
• 47:40
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 47:41
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 47:41
Speaker 14: I've got to work out the details on that.
• 47:43
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 47:43
Speaker 2: All right. All right. So we'll be looking forward to that.
• 47:47
Speaker 2: I mean, this is something every year. I'm talking about
• 47:49
Speaker 2: the Christmas when you flip the switch. And it becomes
• 47:51
Speaker 2: a whole big event. We usually have. People come in
• 47:53
Speaker 2: studio for it. And it'll go through, how.
• 47:56
Speaker 8: Long will Christmas music be playing? That's still on the table.
• 48:00
Speaker 8: It's going to be at least through December 25th, Christmas
• 48:03
  Speaker 8: Day at 7 p.m. I haven't decided if I'm going
• 48:05
Speaker 8: to take it to midnight or not.
• 48:06
Speaker 2: But, I mean, here's the thing. There are stations across
• 48:10
Speaker 2: America that battle with this every year. When is it
• 48:12
Speaker 2: too early? When is it too late? And some have
• 48:14
Speaker 2: already switched, like at the end of September.
• 48:15
  Speaker 1: It's crazy.
• 48:17
Speaker 2: Oh, no. In my opinion, that's too early.
• 48:18
Speaker 14: It is too early.
• 48:20
Speaker 2: That's way too early. All right. Again, starts at 5
• 48:23
  Speaker 2: o'clock tonight.
• 48:24
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 48:24
Speaker 2: Prime 101. That's the carnival reveal. And there'll be about six.
• 48:28
Speaker 2: We'll get everybody down there early. Downtown's going to be
• 48:31
  Speaker 2: hopping tonight.
• 48:31
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 48:32
Speaker 9: Art Walk is also tonight.
• 48:33
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 48:34
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 48:34
Speaker 2: You want to talk about Art Walk?
• 48:35
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 48:36
Speaker 9: Well, Art Walk is something that started years ago to
• 48:40
Speaker 9: an event to bring people into businesses downtown. And there's
• 48:45
Speaker 9: a small group of us who are trying to revive
• 48:47
Speaker 9: that to bring it back to life. And so... I
• 48:49
Speaker 9: highly encourage everyone to go out and support small businesses.
• 48:53
Speaker 9: And now's a great time to start shopping for Christmas, actually.
• 48:57
Speaker 8: And REC Kickin' Cancer is tonight, too, with Real Estate Central.
• 49:00
Speaker 8: So you can still get tickets. Head to the REC
• 49:02
Speaker 8: Kickin' Cancer Facebook page. And if people say there's nothing
• 49:05
Speaker 8: to do, there's stuff to do.
• 49:06
Speaker 2: And Steve Animal is going to be live over at
• 49:08
Speaker 2: 5th Street for Thirsty Thursday. And he's got... Flowers, some
• 49:14
Speaker 2: arch flowers he gives away. He's got mountain merch. So
• 49:16
Speaker 2: you could hit up all of these things tonight.
• 49:18
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 49:19
Speaker 9: I really get annoyed hearing people saying there's nothing to do.
• 49:23
  Speaker 9: In this town.
• 49:23
  Speaker 1: There is.
• 49:24
Speaker 9: They should look at our calendars.
• 49:25
Speaker 8: Click the community connection page at v100. fm that Jenny puts together.
• 49:29
  Speaker 14: There you go.
• 49:30
Speaker 2: And she does a fantastic job.
• 49:31
  Speaker 1: She does.
• 49:31
Speaker 2: I need her to probably do, to help me with
• 49:33
  Speaker 2: my show.
• 49:34
  Speaker 10: Yeah.
• 49:34
Speaker 2: That way I wouldn't forget guests like I did earlier
• 49:36
Speaker 2: today and have them sitting in the green room. That's
• 49:38
Speaker 2: all right. Why are you here?
• 49:39
  Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
• 49:39
  Speaker 17: Oh, yeah.
• 49:40
  Speaker 1: Come on now.
• 49:40
  Speaker 5: Come on now.
• 49:41
Speaker 2: We'll make it work.
• 49:41
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 49:42
Speaker 2: All right. Bobby Spry, sales marketing consultant extraordinaire.
• 49:47
  Speaker 18: Weasel.
• 49:48
Speaker 2: And Logan's got Captain Christmas.
• 49:50
Speaker 9: Over here Thank you for having us, Dave I think we.
• 49:53
Speaker 2: Need to call him Captain Christmas I kind of like.
• 49:55
Speaker 14: That I like that as well I'll accept.
• 49:57
Speaker 2: It All right, Captain Christmas All right, what's... Meadows, what
• 50:00
Speaker 2: are you doing over here? TJ Meadows is.
• 50:01
Speaker 19: Putting my song plug in for V100 Christmas That's in
• 50:04
Speaker 19: there Dan Vogelberg, Same Old Land's Eye I love.
• 50:07
Speaker 2: That song I love that song What's your favorite Christmas song, Logan?
• 50:09
Speaker 2: Do you have one? No, I'm just going to say
• 50:12
Speaker 2: no right now Okay, bye Because I was going to.
• 50:14
Speaker 9: Say Christmas song, Nat King Cole Okay.
• 50:16
Speaker 2: And so you're putting for Dan Fogelberg's name on Lang Syne. Yes, absolutely.
• 50:19
Speaker 2: Because nothing says Christmas like drinking a six-pack in a car.
• 50:22
  Speaker 9: Hey, that's a true story.
• 50:24
Speaker 2: I know, I know it is. I know the story
• 50:25
Speaker 2: very well. I introduced Bobby to my all-time favorite Christmas song,
• 50:29
Speaker 2: Merry Christmas from the Family. I'll have to look that up.
• 50:33
Speaker 9: Don't waste your time.
• 50:36
Speaker 2: Robert Earl Keene, Montgomery Gentry later did it.
• 50:39
  Speaker 9: It's very entertaining.
• 50:40
Speaker 2: It's very entertaining, and it's my people. I'll put it
• 50:43
Speaker 2: that way. Merry Christmas from the family. You need to
• 50:45
  Speaker 2: look that up.
• 50:46
Speaker 9: It's very fitting, too.
• 50:48
Speaker 2: And KWS, I think, their country station, I think they
• 50:51
Speaker 2: play it on there. All right, guys. Get on my studio.
• 50:53
  Speaker 2: Thank you.
• 50:53
  Speaker 9: Thanks, Dave.

Speaker 2: Love that song. Love that song.
• 51:38
Speaker 19: We'll argue it is indeed a Christmas song till the
• 51:40
Speaker 19: day I die. There's some discussion. It's kind of like
• 51:43
Speaker 19: the diehard of Christmas songs. It is indeed a Christmas song,
• 51:46
Speaker 19: and it's a great song. All right, what you got
• 51:47
Speaker 19: on the show? Uriah Cummings, West Virginia Department of Education

Speaker 2: his first days in West Virginia. All right, I'll see
• 52:22
Speaker 2: you later today on Midday. Until then, have fun and

  Speaker 2: love somebody.
