- 0:17possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring some
- 0:20joy. Into the.
- 0:21World. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the studio.
- 0:31As I stand here talking to you, I have in my hand and a brand
- 0:35new engraving pen. This was a gift from my son for
- 0:39Christmas and it just arrived. It was late.
- 0:41Apparently it got completely lost, which freaked him out, but
- 0:44that's a totally different story and that's not what we're
- 0:46talking about. Anyway, it arrived today and I'm
- 0:49super excited. And if you are in a certain
- 0:52algorithm, you get lots of ads. So you may have seen an ad for
- 0:55this, but this is a little engraving pen that's like a
- 0:58laser. And you can actually engrave
- 1:01wood with it. You can do stones, all kinds of
- 1:04things. I have been wanting one of these
- 1:06forever. I've been talking about it.
- 1:09He heard me. He said I'm going to get her one
- 1:11for Christmas. So it's in my hands.
- 1:14I'm so excited about it. Now here's the challenge.
- 1:19When you're creative, sometimes you have the exuberance of
- 1:25seeing something new and going, Oh my gosh, I can't wait to use
- 1:28it. And then sometimes you have the,
- 1:30this is really cool. I have no idea what to do.
- 1:33And you have that blank canvas, so to speak, in front of you.
- 1:37You can do whatever you want, but yet you're like, I don't
- 1:41want to put paint on the paper. Now, having gone to many, many
- 1:46paint classes in the past, I can tell you I have experienced this
- 1:52so much. That first swipe on the paper is
- 1:56hard. It's just hard.
- 1:58It's complex in my head because once you make the commitment to
- 2:02putting the brush in the paint and the paint on the paper there
- 2:06you believe you have it. That's it.
- 2:08But very, very long time ago, I had a teacher who said to me
- 2:13that it's not the first stroke that totally matters.
- 2:17It's the layers, it's all the additional pieces.
- 2:21And at the time I was frustrated with that comment because I was
- 2:25like, no, you, you have to go in.
- 2:27You have to like make the commitment and and be ready to
- 2:30do the and he's like, no, you have to make the commitment to
- 2:34just showing up. And when he said it, I kind of
- 2:37was like, Oh my God, I got it. I got it.
- 2:40But not until I really like dove into self development.
- 2:43Could I cross pollinate this idea and bring it over to life?
- 2:48And this pen in my hand and me standing in front of these
- 2:51little, I have these little wide pieces of board that I want to
- 2:56practice carving on. But even those I don't want to
- 2:59waste because that's how my brain works.
- 3:00Like, oh, I could use this. I could put these around stakes
- 3:04on my path while I'm walking. So as I'm walking, I can see the
- 3:07messages that I carve into them. How cool would that be?
- 3:11And of course I like that idea. So I don't want to quote UN
- 3:14quote mess it up. So I'm sitting there going, all
- 3:17right, I genuinely need just a practice piece to get my hand on
- 3:20it. But then and I start doing that
- 3:23old pattern of it's the first stroke.
- 3:26It's the whole thing. It's not about the layers.
- 3:29It's not about all the other pieces that come into it.
- 3:32And this is such an amazing metaphor for our life because we
- 3:37have to think in layers. We have to think in multiple
- 3:40actions. We have to think in things that
- 3:42are going to build upon themselves.
- 3:44And when we do, everything gets better.
- 3:47You know, you see these fantastic drawings or paintings,
- 3:50you go in a museum and you see them and you don't think that
- 3:53that person just did that with that first layer, didn't mix,
- 3:56didn't go back, didn't tinker with it, didn't go back and just
- 4:00constantly be on that like, oh, let me touch this.
- 4:03Oh, let me touch that. Of course they did.
- 4:06You're seeing the end result. I'm seeing the end result.
- 4:09I'm not seeing the path. It's like showing up in my
- 4:12garden in the middle of of spring or summer and it's
- 4:17gorgeous. That took so many steps to go
- 4:21and make that happen. And that's like our life.
- 4:24Everything has so many steps and we don't even think about the
- 4:28number of things that someone has to do in order to get to
- 4:31that space. We're always looking at those
- 4:33end results and going, wow, I want that, but not thinking
- 4:37about all those steps. So as I hold my pen and I get
- 4:41ready to do this and I, I felt that angst come up again.
- 4:45I was like, oh, you know what? I need to I need to put this in
- 4:48check. I need to give myself a reality
- 4:50check here and say, no, this is about the layers and I'm
- 4:54entering into a layer phase. So I'm going to challenge you to
- 4:58do the same thing. Think about the layers.
- 5:00Think about the start. The start is not the end.
- 5:03And if I make a mistake, I listen.
- 5:05I've been making art for a really long time.
- 5:07I know how to fix it. I know what to do.
- 5:09I know like if I'm taking pictures I might post one
- 5:13picture and you see that one picture but I took 50.
- 5:17Literally. I took 50 pictures to get that
- 5:20one picture and I might move 1/2 a foot, maybe an inch lower,
- 5:25higher, moving to the side, different layers.
- 5:28So remember the first step is just showing up and then the
- 5:32rest of it layer it. Give yourself the chance to
- 5:35enjoy the beauty that comes out of layering.
- 5:38All right my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I will
- 5:41see you tomorrow. Bye.
