- 0:00Welcome to the City Center Podcast. I'm
- 0:03Jerry Marcello. The summer heat is fading
- 0:05and West Palm Beach is ready for another
- 0:07wonderful winter season. The returner of
- 0:10the West Palm Beach Green Market serves
- 0:11as the opening act for fall and winter
- 0:14and the event is jam-packed with new
- 0:16vendors, new features and delicious new
- 0:18foods. We'll take a look at what may be
- 0:21the biggest and best green market ever.
- 0:23That's next on the City Center Podcast
- 0:25from West Palm Beach.
- 0:31And joining us now is Angela Poco who is
- 0:34the City's Marketing Community Events
- 0:35Manager. Angela, welcome. Thank you for
- 0:38having me today. Let's start with a very
- 0:40basic question. You know some people
- 0:42think that a green market is nothing but
- 0:45a place for buying greens. Is that the
- 0:48case? They have never been to the West
- 0:50Palm Beach Green Market then. So
- 0:52ironically you know our green market we
- 0:54try to stay true to what a European green
- 0:56market model looks like. So you
- 0:59won't find a lot of tchotchkes and things
- 1:02that are like store-bought that
- 1:03you could pick up anywhere. We have
- 1:06produce which of course you know we
- 1:07always focus on our farmer, our growers.
- 1:09That's our number one attraction that we
- 1:11want to be able to make sure we
- 1:12accommodate. We have cafes and we have
- 1:15beverage vendors and we introduced a new
- 1:17category this year called health and
- 1:19wellness because we realized that as we
- 1:22are growing as adults and you know we're
- 1:25evolving that our market needed to change
- 1:27a little bit and we recognize that
- 1:29health and wellness is such a huge thing
- 1:31amongst people right now. So we
- 1:33added a health and wellness category and
- 1:35so this is the first year we're kicking
- 1:36that off as well. But again all natural
- 1:39products we're looking for those little
- 1:42businesses that have that niche the
- 1:43greatest out of the greatest and and
- 1:46that's what makes our market just a
- 1:48little bit different than some other
- 1:49markets that might be out there. And I
- 1:51think one of the things that really makes
- 1:52the our green market different than
- 1:55others is the sheer volume of vendors
- 1:57that you have. How many do you have for
- 1:59this year? So I always like by saying
- 2:01this like I don't know if people realize
- 2:03that our market is judge-and-juried. So
- 2:06wait so it's not like you just sign up
- 2:08and you know show up.
- 2:10No. You other markets
- 2:12you put your application in and they take
- 2:14you. Our market is different and we
- 2:17pride ourselves on that. We had over 900
- 2:20applications for this green market. Of
- 2:23those we did a deep dive took out the
- 2:25ones that we didn't feel fit any of our
- 2:27categories and you know they just weren't
- 2:31one of the categories. And then
- 2:33from there we had 400 viable applicants.
- 2:37It takes five days to judge those
- 2:40vendors. Everybody comes in it's a pure
- 2:44pure judge panel so we ask a lot of our
- 2:48volunteers that come in and judge these
- 2:50things but they're experts in their field
- 2:51whether that's marketing they're a chef
- 2:53they own a small business they own event
- 2:56you know they do events they volunteered
- 2:57events but they're experts in their
- 2:59industry so that when they're coming in
- 3:01they're judging these people based on
- 3:03what they know to be true. So you have to
- 3:06really bring your game to get into this
- 3:08market and you know that's first and
- 3:11foremost and when you ask me how many
- 3:13people this is the most we've ever taken.
- 3:16We started with 150 vendors and that's
- 3:19just core vendors so if you were down
- 3:22there you saw the footprint expansion
- 3:24really spectacular it was so happy with
- 3:27opening day but more to that we also
- 3:29created the sprouts program this year. So
- 3:32when we were going through the judge
- 3:34process there were so many amazing
- 3:36vendors that came through but they just
- 3:38didn't have the market experience they
- 3:39were just getting their teeth you know
- 3:41just cutting their teeth and in their
- 3:43business and they had a spectacular
- 3:45product and they judged really well. So
- 3:48we thought the sprouts program would be
- 3:50a great add-on again when you look at
- 3:55what our city is doing right now it's
- 3:57developing at such a huge rate but it's
- 4:00developing in a unique way and the
- 4:03mayor has a jumpstart program which is
- 4:05phenomenal so we kind of borrowed his
- 4:07model and we were like hey we can do this
- 4:10with a sprouts program we want to
- 4:11be able to give them the tools that if
- 4:13they want to register to be a small
- 4:14business we can help them get through
- 4:16that if maybe they want the opportunity
- 4:18to be able to learn more about social
- 4:20media and what's working for them in
- 4:22marketing or they can't keep up with the
- 4:24sheer volume of our market we're gonna
- 4:26allow them to come once or twice a month
- 4:28versus having to be there every week.
- 4:30So it gives them the chance to break into
- 4:32a market but without the full
- 4:34pressure of oh my goodness I have to keep
- 4:36up with this supply and demand every
- 4:37single week so we're trying to set an
- 4:39expectation that's realistic for them so
- 4:42that they can be successful. To use a
- 4:45sports analogy it's sort of like a
- 4:47junior league. Absolutely. Little league
- 4:51or you know the minor league there's a
- 4:52word baseball so that's really neat you
- 4:55have the ability to have folks come in
- 4:56learn the ropes from you and from other
- 5:00people who have been involved
- 5:01in the process for a long period of time
- 5:03and therefore you're actually spurring
- 5:05growth in local business. Absolutely and
- 5:08we're hoping that you know again
- 5:10everybody always hopes that their
- 5:13business becomes something and as
- 5:15they're starting as these micro
- 5:17businesses they're really entrepreneurs
- 5:20that are trying to figure out where they
- 5:22fit in the market and just like so many
- 5:26of our vendors in the past they become
- 5:29brick and mortar but it's they'll all
- 5:32tell you you know oh I got my start at
- 5:34the West Palm Beach Green Market and
- 5:35then they go on to do these amazing
- 5:37things and for us that's the ultimate
- 5:39testament. If you've done something
- 5:41you've done it successful we're sad to
- 5:43watch you go but we completely understand
- 5:45and we want nothing more than
- 5:47for them to be successful. That's really
- 5:49amazing so once again we're dealing with
- 5:52hundreds of vendors perhaps on any
- 5:54particular Saturday. Yeah. Is everybody
- 5:57down on the waterfront? So we take up
- 6:00basically two blocks from the
- 6:03waterfront Flagler to the 200 block
- 6:06through the 200 block and we're on
- 6:08Olive. Right up the street. Right up the
- 6:09street yeah so we put roughly between our
- 6:13sponsors and our sprouts and our regular
- 6:15vendors we could be in excess of
- 6:17170 vendors out there which is pretty
- 6:20impressive I think. Very impressive well
- 6:22I'm going back to earlier conversations
- 6:25that we've had dealing with the very
- 6:26origin of the green market when you were
- 6:29in the parking lot of the city all. 13
- 6:30vendors we started. 13 vendors was all
- 6:33you had and now look at what's what's
- 6:35happening obviously we have a formula
- 6:37that works and it's something that is
- 6:38really interesting for the folks to come
- 6:41and visit and take part in during
- 6:42season. You know so we talked a little
- 6:48bit about how these vendors are learning
- 6:50their craft as they go forward and that
- 6:53some do move on. Do we feel that we
- 6:56are going to be seeing even more vendors
- 6:58taking the leap and actually opening up
- 7:01or their own brick and mortar? Well I
- 7:03mean we hope so ultimately like you know
- 7:05just in these past few years a couple of
- 7:08our primary vendors that we absolutely
- 7:10love have opened brick and mortar. Olive
- 7:13oil of the world he opened a brick
- 7:14and mortar bread by Johnny opened
- 7:17actually I think he's on his second brick
- 7:19and mortar so like watching them grow and
- 7:22expand you know it's just it's
- 7:25amazing to watch that happen Palm Beach
- 7:27salt another one they opened a brick and
- 7:29mortar just recently New York roll-up
- 7:30bright and northwood and some of these
- 7:32are staying in West Palm and we love that
- 7:35so that's pretty pretty amazing. One
- 7:39of the things is very clear and it
- 7:41follows with a lot of things that the
- 7:42city does is the city is adapting and
- 7:45changing its approach to things as times
- 7:48change and the city is growing and people
- 7:50are coming here the the green
- 7:53market has changed its path in its
- 7:55direction over the years and the decades
- 7:57where are we going now where do you want
- 8:00to take the green market as we move
- 8:01forward? So you know it's interesting
- 8:04when you say that because I'm one of
- 8:07those that looks at something and says
- 8:09okay yes we're established you know when
- 8:11we first moved over to the waterfront we
- 8:13were 45 vendors and then we would add on
- 8:16a little bit more we would add on a
- 8:17little bit more and each year I push
- 8:19the boundaries a little bit further and
- 8:21you know a couple years ago I looked at
- 8:24it and I'm like okay I want to do a
- 8:27MasterChef showcase we've got so many
- 8:28talented chefs that are out here people
- 8:30don't even realize that some of these
- 8:31businesses are chefs and that's how they
- 8:33started like let's capture that so we
- 8:35started with that and then I'm like okay
- 8:38just pause for a second like I love
- 8:43plants however my plant skills might not
- 8:48be at the level to keep them sustained
- 8:51not so I'm isn't as green as you'd like
- 8:53yes so then I was like well okay why
- 8:56don't we use our vendors who are experts
- 8:58in these field and start doing these
- 9:01workshops because our goal we want to
- 9:04keep people down in West Palm Beach we
- 9:06want to keep them down we want them in
- 9:08the shops we want them shopping with our
- 9:10merchants like not just the market but we
- 9:12want them to come play and stay you
- 9:14know there's so much to do downtown so I
- 9:18was like okay a lot of people before
- 9:19we're just running and grabbing what they
- 9:21wanted from the market and leaving
- 9:22and I'm like how do we keep them here a
- 9:23little bit longer so that's just evolved
- 9:27into all sorts of fun really neat things
- 9:30to do but like you know you can
- 9:32learn how to do a flower arrangement are
- 9:35we opened up with a wine tasting so you
- 9:38got to sample different cheeses from the
- 9:40market vendors and then you could go
- 9:42shop at the pop-up wine shop that we have
- 9:44too so it's like we're giving
- 9:46people opportunities to do or learn
- 9:48different things we're going onto the
- 9:51health and wellness component of it and
- 9:53now we're going to be working with some
- 9:54of the studios that are downtown and a
- 9:56lot of people come from those studios or
- 9:58they don't even know that they're there
- 10:00but they will soon because they're going
- 10:02to be doing a class downtown and then
- 10:05we're gonna pair that up with like a
- 10:07field of greens afterwards that's going
- 10:09to give them a drink so you're gonna be
- 10:11able to take a Pilates class experience
- 10:13amazing experience from a West Palm
- 10:15Beach vendor like that has a
- 10:17brick-and-mortar that
- 10:18you might not know is
- 10:19there and then walk away with something
- 10:21you know of a walk away from a vendor so
- 10:25and you're gonna pay ten dollars for that
- 10:27so those classes are filling up
- 10:27so those classes are filling up
- 10:30quickly and it's just amazing that you
- 10:32can do that and then you can just sit
- 10:33and shop at the market afterwards and
- 10:35experience all the rest of the vendors
- 10:37how does it just on that little point how
- 10:39do people sign up or how do they
- 10:41register for your events sure so the
- 10:43easiest way is WPB.org forward slash
- 10:46green market on our landing page for the
- 10:50green market you can click a link
- 10:51and it takes you right to Eventbrite so
- 10:54right now all those classes live on
- 10:56Eventbrite and you know they range and
- 10:58like there's a pumpkin painting I think
- 10:59it's five dollars they range from five
- 11:02dollars on up to thirty five depending
- 11:04on what it is you're making but there are
- 11:05some incredible classes coming up and
- 11:08I'm excited because I'm either gonna take
- 11:10a few practice up because you can
- 11:12do a paint and sip and there's just I
- 11:15cannot say enough things about the
- 11:17programming that's happening down there
- 11:19that's really neat and the other thing
- 11:20too which I really love about the green
- 11:22market is the vibe down there and you
- 11:25know the people are truly cool and
- 11:28friendly and relaxed and everybody's got
- 11:30their dogs and I mean it's dogs kids yeah
- 11:33everybody's having a really great
- 11:35time it's you know it's interesting and I
- 11:38it took me a long time to sit and try
- 11:40to figure it out like what is it and it's
- 11:43just been like in the last three
- 11:45three to four years the explosion and I
- 11:48would say probably after COVID but it
- 11:51was like what is it why do so many people
- 11:54want to be there and it really is
- 11:56like it's a place to be and it's the
- 11:58place to be seen and you watch these
- 12:00people gather with their friends yeah or
- 12:02they're bringing their whole family down
- 12:04whether that's your family with your pets
- 12:06your family with your kids your
- 12:07parents but they're bringing them down
- 12:09there to be part of an experience and
- 12:12you know it's just so nice to just watch
- 12:14people sitting in the great lawn
- 12:16enjoying the music or taking a workshop
- 12:19or just the shopping like for me the
- 12:23shopping is just incredible my husband
- 12:25cringes sometimes because he's like are
- 12:27you going to the market to work or are
- 12:28you going to market to shop and I'm like
- 12:30maybe both but like there's just so much
- 12:34to do and you know it's we've got
- 12:37extended hours so we're 830 to 130 now
- 12:40it's we really did want to make sure
- 12:43that it's a safe environment so the road
- 12:45closures help with that keeps people
- 12:47protected there so I think people are
- 12:50just overall happy that they can get out
- 12:53walk to something get some exercise shop
- 12:56and just take in our amazing waterfront
- 12:59vibe totally it's the vibe is wonderful
- 13:02the the relaxation is great and you
- 13:04really get a chance to step out into
- 13:07South Florida at its very best and really
- 13:10enjoy stuff our vendors are the best of
- 13:13the best so like if you there is
- 13:15something for everyone there so like if
- 13:17you're you know gluten-free we've got
- 13:19you covered if you're a vegan we've got
- 13:21that too so like literally if you go
- 13:24down there you will find at least one
- 13:26place that you want to shop at all right
- 13:28I know we got people hooked and there's a
- 13:30lot of people who haven't been to the
- 13:31green market let's tell them let's give
- 13:33them a list of the most important tips
- 13:36to make sure you get the most out of the
- 13:37event absolutely so I always you know I'm
- 13:40a planner by nature so if you're coming
- 13:42out for the first time plan our market
- 13:46brings roughly about 20,000 people down
- 13:49on and on a given Saturday and that
- 13:50sounds like a big overwhelming number but
- 13:52remember you have blocks of shopping
- 13:55because we do but right up against the
- 13:57antique and fleet which is another two
- 13:58blocks of shopping so I always say get
- 14:01there early the garages that are further
- 14:04away are there's three city garages that
- 14:06we have that are free parking from 830
- 14:09to 130 so plan to get there early get
- 14:12there park walk and and the thing is is
- 14:17you can shop while you walk so it's not a
- 14:19bad thing and if you really need to be
- 14:21in an up close vendor you know garage
- 14:23that's closer to the vendors then you've
- 14:25got two other options but the city
- 14:26garages they work just know where you're
- 14:29going and understand that there are road
- 14:31closures so give yourself a little bit
- 14:33of time and just know that when you get
- 14:35there it's all gonna be worth it do I
- 14:37have to worry about feeding the kids
- 14:39before I head on out or is there stuff
- 14:40on site no way like you you want to talk
- 14:46about the melting pot of things to eat
- 14:49and you cannot go wrong bring a cooler
- 14:52bag bring shopping bags you know so that
- 14:54you're more sustainable but you can
- 14:57literally have breakfast shop the whole
- 14:59day have lunch or heck you can even grab
- 15:02lunch at one of the restaurants if
- 15:03you're like okay I've marketed myself out
- 15:06but there are breakfast options
- 15:09brunch options lunch options yeah
- 15:11take-home options but if you walk away
- 15:14from our market hungry you have done
- 15:16something wrong some markets you get
- 15:19there you can walk around it's they're
- 15:20wonderful markets but you're done in in
- 15:22half an hour that's not the case no I
- 15:25don't I don't know that you can
- 15:27successfully see everything that we have
- 15:30in one trip and I think that's one of
- 15:32the things that's so unique about our
- 15:34market people have their favorites and
- 15:36they go and that's great yeah but then
- 15:39they see something you know and they're
- 15:42like oh oh okay and so then they have a
- 15:46new favorite so I always encourage
- 15:48people don't go in there with blinders on
- 15:50thinking I'm going for one thing
- 15:52be open and look at the markets as you go
- 15:56along and soon we're gonna have a
- 15:57great interactive map that you can
- 15:59actually the we've done something new
- 16:02this year with booth numbers so if you
- 16:03see on Instagram people are yelling see
- 16:06me at booth blah blah blah we'll find it
- 16:08they'll be able to find them but they'll
- 16:09be able to also from that map they'll be
- 16:12able to get a description of what it is
- 16:14that they're selling and then the
- 16:16location of where they are so helpful
- 16:18for that too so and it's like I said it's
- 16:21just an amazing experience and you
- 16:24know take a chance come down and
- 16:26absolutely and and it's part of what
- 16:29you've been talking about with changing
- 16:31out vendors it's never the same every
- 16:35week it's different there's new things to
- 16:36discover so multiple visits make sense
- 16:39it is and the great thing with us is we
- 16:42used to do the judging every year and we
- 16:44stopped that we started giving people two
- 16:46years because by the time they get
- 16:48the hang of things our markets over one
- 16:51other great thing we did extend it out
- 16:53through May this year so our vendors were
- 16:55happy people seem to be happy so we
- 16:58gave them one more month to shop but you
- 17:02know they're there for two years unless
- 17:05something happens but you know that's
- 17:07great and we also put one more thing
- 17:10into place that I do want to touch base
- 17:12on we recognize some of our vendors
- 17:14have been with us since the inception of
- 17:16the market we've had a couple of them
- 17:17that are hanging in right with us so we
- 17:20decided that after 15 years you're
- 17:22pretty much vetted in our market and you
- 17:24know what you're doing and you've got it
- 17:26down to a science so this year we
- 17:27introduced legacy vendors and we have
- 17:3014 of them that no longer have to go
- 17:32through the judging process as long as
- 17:34they want to be part of our market we're
- 17:36happy to have them so they will be here
- 17:38as they grow we grow and that's pretty
- 17:42spectacular too continuing family of
- 17:45vendors who are comfortable and know what
- 17:46yeah yeah yeah and again there are
- 17:49staples in our market and what makes our
- 17:52market so amazing is our vendors you
- 17:55know I can I could try to say it's all
- 17:57the programming it's all the extra stuff
- 17:59but the bottom line is when you have the
- 18:01best of the best out there and we do why
- 18:05would you not want to come to something
- 18:06like that so so the upshot is we bring
- 18:09the kids bring the dogs making the dog on
- 18:12a leash on a leash yeah they got to be
- 18:14only but bring the dogs because I you'd
- 18:17be down there and you could almost do a
- 18:18story about just the dogs and their
- 18:22interactions in there hanging out yeah
- 18:24oh and it's fantastic so it is a relaxing
- 18:27fantastic day of just enjoying
- 18:31beautiful weather beautiful food
- 18:33wonderful vendors and just everyone is
- 18:35having a great time everyone's is so
- 18:38pleasant like you know when you're
- 18:39walking around and you're thinking oh my
- 18:40gosh all those people but the thing is
- 18:43is people get it there's lines like
