- 0:43SPEAKER_01: And now, another exciting episode of the adventures of Outdoor Journal Radio.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: We're back.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Yes, we are.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Fresh off of our last road trip of the year.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: A dandy.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: It was a dozen bay one.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: It was a dandy.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: We went as far northwest in this province as humanly possible.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: We couldn't drive probably much further than that, I don't think.
- 1:21SPEAKER_04: We can't.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: I think that's the end of her.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: End of the road.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Pushing up against the uh uh Manitoba border.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: And it was a two-day journey.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: A long two-day journey.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Not just a two-day, but a two-day.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we were full driving for two days to get there.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: And back.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, well worth the the trip.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: We experienced a part of the uh Canadian fishery that we had never experienced before.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Um, the place was called Two Rivers Lodge.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about it in a few minutes with the owner who's gonna join us, uh Will Pulowski, and uh tell us about this incredible operation um that uh you're gonna see uh early uh season uh sometime January of 2027.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: We're uh gonna be showing you the episodes that we produced from there.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Just incredible.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really gem of a place.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: And we stopped in Dryden on Wabagoon as well on this trip, too.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: That as well.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Let's not forget about that.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: That is a big double shoot there for us.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: So it was a lot of a lot of road time.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Totally different experience, the Wabagoon experience.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, completely different.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: If you've not heard of heard of Wabagoon, it's one of those lakes that is uh permanently stained, if you will.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: It always has color to it, and it's a clay-based uh waterway, and it's never clear, it's always got that clay stain to it.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, visibility is like less than a foot.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: We know that because we were shooting underwater stuff there.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's very, very difficult to get it.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: And the walleye there can see very well in that water, just us on that one.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: Mr.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Taylor will uh did a show up there, and it's come on now.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a pretty good one, too.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: So, anyways, uh that's all coming up.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about that and a whole lot more.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: First uh fish in Canada, the store alive and doing well.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: We've been having some experiencing some problems as of late.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: No, don't do say digital problems.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: And uh I'm thinking that we have resolved everything.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, good.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So uh for those of you who have been frustrated trying to put orders in, but you it wouldn't allow you to order stuff, uh, I believe we're good to go.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: And that's important because the species hoodies 2.0 are there, and what a perfect time of year to be getting yourself a beautiful, comfortable, um, unique part of Canadian fishing hoodie uh right there behind us.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: And then once you get that and feel how good it is, you're gonna say, hey, this is also the time of year where I could buy a Christmas present for somebody.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: Hello.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: What's your favorite species there, uh Sam?
- 4:00SPEAKER_04: Oh, well, I kind of like small mouths.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: What a great idea.
- 4:03SPEAKER_04: Hello.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: What a great idea that is.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Um, but you want to check them out.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: It's the uh 2.0 species series.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: You have your 2.0's here.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: 2.0.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: The new and improved.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Uh listener feedback in response to an old video of Pete fishing in the Whitby Harbor.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I remember that show.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: That was fun.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: It's brought to us by G Fear24, who we've heard from quite a bit, right, Mr.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: Dean?
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: I think we heard from it.
- 4:30SPEAKER_04: He's a regular uh via YouTube.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: Um G Fear says, and G Fear is kind of, let me preface this with G-Fear is it seems like he's our buddy, and then all of a sudden he's kind of like not our buddy anymore.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: Hey, Dean, like he's kind of he's there.
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: He's a really critic, but he does he support everything we do.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: He does support us.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: And when we do something that he likes, he lets us know too.
- 4:51SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 4:51SPEAKER_03: It's very nice.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: That's it, yeah.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: But he and he's not afraid to give us uh like this right here.
- 4:55SPEAKER_04: It's a shame that this show, being the Fish in Canada show, won't even consider doing anything in Ontario south of Toronto anymore.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: South of Toronto.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: So he's talking specifically the Great Lakes.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: He's talking the Great Lakes or Lake Ontario.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: Sarnia, all that area.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: That's south of Toronto, Niagara.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: Niagara.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: Oh.
- 5:17SPEAKER_04: You know, and we haven't done that in a while, for sure.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: We haven't done any of that in a while.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: So we have done them.
- 5:23SPEAKER_04: We have done them, and we always consider them G Fear.
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: Now you're saying we won't even consider you.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: Really, you're you're you're chomping away at something that you don't really know about there, bud, because we do have our internal meetings here and we talk about this, that, and the other.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: Now, we will take your suggestion and we as we always do, and we'll say, you know what, G Fear is right.
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: Let's let's maybe add in one to the mix here.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: When I become independently wealthy, yes, I'm gonna fish all the stuff that I've that G Fear would like us to fish.
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: You're gonna show everybody?
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: How's that?
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: You're gonna show everybody though, because now you're he wants to see it, right?
- 5:55SPEAKER_04: G Fear.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying, when when we're independently wealthy, we'll shoot all the stuff that G Fear.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: It's a very expensive endeavor, Mr.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: G Fear.
- 6:03SPEAKER_04: That uh uh any shoot that we do is like it's it's very expensive.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: But the the just just to let you in on what obviously what I'm saying is going over everybody's heads.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: We are not we can't just up and say, hey, let's go fish the Osher Creek.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Because that would be a great episode for us.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Let's just go fish the Osher Creek and call it a day.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Well, we can't do that because we have commitments that we have to fulfill, uh, mostly tourism commitments across the country.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: We need to make sure that the venues that we select to fish also have the infrastructure for um like lodges, for example.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: The reason that we fish lodges because they're easy for us in in terms of getting all the amenities in one place, all under one little package called tourism.
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: When we like the way you did that, you brought the hands like the hands was uh, but you brought them out in a very spectacular way.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: I I've been watching a lot of this stuff and shit like that, eh?
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: How's it gonna go there, please?
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, so we we we every year we have contractual obligations that we have to fulfill, and uh a lot of them involve more uh northerly and rural uh parts of the country that fishing takes place in.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: But believe me, if we could fish uh uh Race Lake every every episode, we'd be there.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: We'd be all over it.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: So anyway, G Fair, but keep it coming, buddy, because you're you are one of our main our main men for getting us good content here, questions, et cetera, you know, and feedback.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: So so there's no slag against you, bro.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: We we like to hear the negatives too, so keep it up, keep it coming for sure.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Speaking of those financial obligations, uh Grasscarp Conservation Corner brought to you by Invasive Species Center.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Um here we are at the end of the season.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: Um turned up, uh Dean.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: Have you heard anything?
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: No, there's been the main one that happened in the summer.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: Um that was kind of the big one.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: We haven't quite heard what the implications of that are because I mean that's the first fertile one that I know of that's been confirmed.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: Um, so I'm sure we're gonna start seeing more on this.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: Um I don't know what stage we're in.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: Like obviously, um, we've been promoting, you know, that we're in the prevention stage right now, which is positive um that we've avoided having fertile populations here.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: But obviously, um one fish doesn't necessarily turn and mean that there are is a stable population here, but it does mean that they're reproducing here.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: So it's it's not good news over this summer.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Not good at all.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: So let's stay on top of that.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Get all your uh information uh from invasivecarp.ca if you want to know more about it, invasivecarp.ca.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: Very quickly, just one more point.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: We're talking about they found one fertile fish.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: This is Lake Ontario, Lake Erie.
- 9:05SPEAKER_04: There's a lot more that nobody's ever seen.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: There's more than one fertile fish out there, folks.
- 9:10SPEAKER_04: So be careful.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Without question.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Uh the news brought to you by our good friends JB Cycle and Marine, Ontario's largest Mercury Princecraft boat motor uh trailer.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: There's a lovely countess coming through, paying us a daily visit, as she does when we do pinch.
- 9:29SPEAKER_04: That was that look.
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, I would not want her to give me that look.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: I think I'm done.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: I'm down the road.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: It's almost like I I could be wrong, but it's almost like when we roll cameras and stuff, she comes through hoping to get a camera turning her way, maybe.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Is that I have to disagree with that.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: No, you don't think she that camera goes on, she is out the door for a smoke or some shit across the street or gone down to Costco for something.
- 9:53SPEAKER_04: She's gone.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: Well, I thought I was hoping she's doing it for our benefit.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Uh yes, JB Cycle, uh Princecraft Mercury dealer, extraordinaire.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, go check them out.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, you don't have to necessarily go to one of their showrooms.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: You can do it all online.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: They do a lot of digital business, both new and used boats, motors, trailers, non-current.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Non-current.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Previously enjoyed non-current.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: Okay, correct.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, the website is jbcycle.com.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Jbcycle.com.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: So in the news, interesting.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: We because we had a chance to meet this young man uh not that long ago on one of our shoes.
- 10:37SPEAKER_04: What a year, wasn't it a year ago-ish?
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Seems like two years now.
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so in the world of Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, their highest level of uh tournament series, the elite level, uh Trey McKinney breaks BASS records.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: So after two, he's Trey McKinney, there's a big thing in BASS.
- 10:54SPEAKER_04: All these, you know, trying to win a tournament is one thing, lots of money involved, et cetera, et cetera.
- 10:58SPEAKER_04: But what and trying to win the classic is another thing.
- 11:01SPEAKER_04: But the other the big third thing is angler of the year.
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: That's a prestigious sword.
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: Huge one for these, because you've got to remember that's that's coming at the end of the season of all the tournaments, the points race, and you are number one.
- 11:12SPEAKER_04: So it's kind of like the uh Stanley Cup in a way, sort of thing.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Well, uh well, no, Stanley Cup would be more like the the the Bassmasters, but but this would be like you are considered the player of the year.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the player of the year.
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: So you are the man, which is what, the heart trophy, I think?
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it'd be the heart trophy.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: Okay, there you go.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: Anyways, this guy uh just just won this year's first uh his first angler of the year.
- 11:40SPEAKER_04: He's was he 21 years old?
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: 21 years old, yeah.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: 21 years old, this kid.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: So we met him when he was 19.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: 19.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: 19 or 20 or something, yeah.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Like that.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: And the previous two years, he was second place in Angler of the Year.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: Second, only to our good friend Chris Johnston, a Canadian boy, who won out two years in a row.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: So um, so this kid is this kid, I gotta call him a kid.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: He is next level.
- 12:04SPEAKER_04: Like this guy is something special for sure.
- 12:08SPEAKER_04: Um he's and and he's he won, he had the heaviest bag of smallmouth, by the way, in the elite events in the St.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: Lawrence River that just happened.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: He had an over 30 pound, 30 uh is it written, 30-11, 30 pounds, 11 ounces on day two in this tournament.
- 12:21SPEAKER_04: That is a huge sack of the city.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Six pounders.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:26SPEAKER_04: Six pounders.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: That's over six pound average.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: Over.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: Like insane.
- 12:31SPEAKER_04: And then his right, I think he got did he get second in that tournament, D?
- 12:34SPEAKER_04: Do you know?
- 12:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he did, yeah.
- 12:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: So Evan Kong, a guy from Pickering here in Ontario, he won it, but and Trey was leading the whole time.
- 12:41SPEAKER_04: He went against in an instance of that tournament, he went against guys like Corey and Chris.
- 12:45SPEAKER_04: Corey Johnston did really well.
- 12:47SPEAKER_04: I think he got third, or whatever.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: He got second in the Angler of the Year, and he did really well, top five in that tournament.
- 12:53SPEAKER_04: To beat a guy as good as Corey Johnston, and not only the angler of the year race, because they were a one-on-one and neck and neck, but beat him on his own turf to get the you know, the tournament uh uh not a victory, but higher level and win the angler of the year.
- 13:07SPEAKER_04: That is insane for a 21-year-old.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: We're just uh, you know, not even touching the tip of the iceberg here.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: This kid has won so many other fishing events uh since he was in high school.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: So this is not a fluke, this is not anything other than a true uh fishing genius.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: This guy is for sure.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: He is the real deal.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: I saw an interview with Trey one time, and uh and they were saying, Trey, what makes you different than everybody else?
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: And that because he is different than everybody else.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: When you win an angler of the year and second twice, twice.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 13:40SPEAKER_04: Like it's boo, it's just crazy.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: So he said, I literally look for the spot on the spot.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: So when everybody finds this great spot, so this 30-pound 11 bag uh bag that he had, he probably found a section of a great section of water, something that's really good.
- 13:58SPEAKER_04: He went right down and honed it down to one little spot.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: Maybe he took a whole day on that spot on a spot, but found it.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: And uh he says that's what's part of his success, is is because of that.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: And it makes a lot of sense.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: I think these guys and and the Johnson brothers can be brought into this too, because that they were at that young age were doing the same thing as as uh he is.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: They're different.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: They're different.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: These these kids, these brilliant anglers that are coming up today are just totally, totally different.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: We realized that when we were put on their boats a few years ago at the Black Bass Championship, the way they operate in a boat is unlike anything you'd ever seen.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: Like you think you understand tournament fishing.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, they're just like us.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: They go out and it's not it's not the same thing.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: No, they're they fish differently.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: They're machines.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: They really are, they really are machines.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: Yes, they are like they're like uh your elite hockey players, your baseball.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: I want to talk about that, and it's coming up in the the fan question of the week.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Obviously, was selected because of this subject matter, which is going to be really important.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Uh the fan question is how does a person progress to become what is considered a professional angler?
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: And what are the skill sets that need to be developed?
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Now, who who sent us this?
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Donald Prevost 1098 via YouTube.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: So the best way that I can think of when we're talking about the elite of the elite anglers, even at the tender age of 18, 19, 20, 21, it's no different than hockey.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: You know, you've got the Connor McDavids of the world who at the age of 17 and 18 were already breaking records that most adult men had could even dream of breaking.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Because there's something in that individual, uh, whether it's it's any of the sports, you can take any of the sports.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Race car drivers.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: How about the race car drivers?
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: The F1 uh world champion last year was 20 years old.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: Just you get your license at 16.
- 16:04SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 16:05SPEAKER_04: This is insane.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: How does that happen?
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Well, these people are different.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I don't I'm not going to tell you that it's it's anything other than they are individually unique.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: And I think Trey is is one of those guys.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: I think um there's something within them that takes them to a level well beyond most of us.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: We can't even comprehend what it is.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: You said the spot within the spot.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Well, that's easier said than done, right?
- 16:31SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 16:31SPEAKER_04: You gotta be able to pull that off.
- 16:33SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 16:33SPEAKER_04: You gotta go find that, you know what I mean?
- 16:35SPEAKER_04: So and they put like as an anglers, they they are there.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: Well, Angie and I are having our coffee.
- 16:42SPEAKER_04: Angie and I or Dean are having our coffee at Tim Hortons there waiting for the you know, the oh, let's say for the daylight.
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: They're there in their pre-fishing time from the day they can from the time they can see a very speck of light out there to dark every day.
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: They're out there all the time, you know what I mean?
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: Like they put in so many more hours than anybody else.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: But I'm gonna say that there are a lot of guys doing that, putting in the so many more hours.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: There are a lot of guys that that work hard at this craft, but there are very few.
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: But even two hours a day pre-fishing more than the other guys that are putting in long hours, you're getting an extra two hours a day in it ends up being six or eight extra hours, and and that one little spot on a spot is found.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 17:28SPEAKER_04: Because not everybody is doing putting in the time that these young kids are doing right now.
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: There's there not not there's no way.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: I can guarantee you the older guys out there are not doing that.
- 17:36SPEAKER_04: They're putting in a little good practice, but they're not, you know, it's it's been proven.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: They've said it.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Well, one thing's for sure that these guys are proving day in and day out that experience is not required.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: A nice commodity to have, exactly, but experience is not required.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: So that tells me two things.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Number one, uh they are very proficient at working their electronics, much more so than say an older uh age group.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: But I think they are better tacticians.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: I think they can execute better for whatever reason.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: These special, unique people I'm talking about, I think they execute better.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: It's easy to to talk the game, but to to to deliver is a difficult thing to do.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: And I think these guys, and I'll go back to Connor McDavid.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's a million really good skaters uh on the planet, and certainly in the National Hockey League, there are hundreds of excellent skaters, but McDavid skating is at another level, a totally different level.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: So kids like this, I think they're just executing at a different level.
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: To let reiterate this too, everybody thinks, yeah, because they're so good with their forward facing sooner.
- 18:53SPEAKER_04: No, well, okay, BAS has every tournament, every second tournament is no forward facing.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: So they don't and these guys are doing it without that as well.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: They're doing it with the old school stuff.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: Throw a spinnerbait, throw a jig, whatever it is, they're doing it with that too.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: So I think it's execution.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: I think I think they are just better at um manipulating their baits, their rods, and everything else.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Um because you have to say it's that, because if it was experience, experience would lead to well, you know, it would lead them to believe, well, the fish should be there because it's been there 132 times before.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Well, these kids don't have that.
- 19:31SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, I do I do I have heard a lot lately about these young guys that are up and coming, maybe not Trey McKinney because it is now a full-time job.
- 19:39SPEAKER_04: But even these kids that are getting out of high school, they're somehow getting funded financially, et cetera, to go fishing every day.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: They're on the water two to three hundred days a year.
- 19:49SPEAKER_04: These are oh my god, that makes a difference.
- 19:52SPEAKER_04: Now they have experience.
- 19:53SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: If you can put in 300 days or 250 days on the water a year, that's a lot of experience.
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: And apparently that's going on quite a bit with these young guys.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: So this episode is brought to you by Sale.

- 20:30SPEAKER_01: All right, let's get to the subject at hand.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, we told you at the beginning of the program, uh, we are just recently back from a wonderful experience, uh place called uh formerly called Tetu Island Lodge.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: It's now Two Rivers Lodge, and uh the owner's with us.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, no stranger to those of you who have been uh listening to uh Steve Nidswicki's uh podcast, uh Diaries of a Lodge Owner.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: His name is Will Pulowski.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Will, how you doing buddy?
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Bye bye.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: Good, good, good stuff.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Nice, uh, nice to to get hooked up with you again.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: We had a wonderful few days with you up there.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Too short, unfortunately, but uh story of my life, boys, too short.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: You know, right?
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, always too cold, beady, and always a half inch too short.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: Just to uh to uh for the audience sake, uh it was formerly called uh Tattoo Island Lodge, and because the lake is Tattoo Lake, right?
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Is that correct?
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: It was the enunciation is they the enunciation is T2.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: T2.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: Um from yeah, that's what the locals have have come up with it, but it is T-E-T-U.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: And and it means the place where two rivers meet, uh in Ojibwe.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: So um it's our name being ended up being two rivers, but that's what T2 meant.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: And uh two rivers being the uh English uh coming out of uh the English end of Winnipeg, right?
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Would be the two rivers that.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: It's it's the end of the English that dumps in from Lac Sewell.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: And I would say it's like the center of the Winnipeg River in like relation to Lake of the Woods and Lake Winnipeg that it dumps into.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: I would say it's right in the middle.
- 22:20SPEAKER_04: It dumps into Lake Win or Lake of the Woods, too, doesn't it?
- 22:22SPEAKER_04: Or it comes from or something like that?
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: Oh, it comes from Lake of the Woods.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: All this to say that you have got probably the best gene pool of both pike and musky there because both those systems, obviously, Laxuel being the legendary um muskie.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And I guess you could say the same for Lake of the Woods as well.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: You've got both those systems feeding your particular body of water, which means the gene pool there is like super, and we experience that as well.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: So it's uh it's quite a unique position that you've got.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Um the other thing, too, and maybe you can walk us through this.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: The lodge uh was operating for some 40 years, and then it was completely shut down.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so um, so the history is so in 42, um the lodge was was created.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: It was it was always an aboriginal um meet and swap place, I guess you could say like that.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know the correct terminology for that, but um a place where they would meet.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: And and the reason I know that is say you it's an identifier of of seeing the oak trees.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: We don't have oak trees in the north exactly.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: And you have them all over my property, and there's certain points and certain areas where you can tell it's a meeting place, and and this was one of them.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Um, but in uh, like I say, in 42, it was created.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Uh gentleman came back from from the war.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, he took some some some money that the military had given him for um his services and decided to start this dream.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: And it went on for a few years.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Uh, he ended up selling um to another family in the mid-50s.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: They ran it for a few years.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Uh Garson was the name, but it went bankrupt.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: It they didn't really, from what I understand, it was just kind of a more of a just a fish camp for him and his friends, and it just really didn't operate because they didn't have any more money.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: So it sat vacant vacant for five years until a gentleman named Bill Kozak took it over.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: Bill was a local guy from Kenora here.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: Um, he was a printer, actually.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: He had sold his printing business here and in Winnipeg, and his children were really young.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: His children were like two and four.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: And he had just got his wife had passed away.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: And he was done working for the man.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: He wanted to realize that life was precious.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: His wife had died at like 30 years old or something.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Very sad.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: And uh, and he was an outdoorsman, and he always wanted to be a lodge owner.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: So that's what he did.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: He packed up his two little kids and and bought this place, and uh he created what we have now, you know, those buildings that that that that your viewers will see come when we when we show the episode, you know, of the fork and those on those old buildings and the lodge.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: He's the one that created what you see there.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: Um it was there, he had it until the early 90s, and then he as his kids grew older, it was just tougher for him to do it um by himself, obviously.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: And uh he decided to sell to a gentleman uh named named Ed.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: And Ed was the owner um for several years.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: He kind of took it from like fishing lodge to like more of the elite level kind of place where where we stand now.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: I guess it was known for that for years.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: So he had kind of taken it to that point.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Um, he ran it with his family.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: So Ed and Kathy were there until 2000 and like I'm 14, something like that.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: And then they they had ended up having a divorce, things happened in business, um, and it ended up going bankrupt in 2019.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, the whole COVID took it out story, but COVID finished it, but it was going under on the business end, you could tell.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: So it was one of those ones like while I was building Nordic, um, my my old lodge, and and had my guide services and being in the area that I kind of always watched.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Um, so it sat, somebody had bought it out of the bankruptcy, and I didn't know who it was.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: It was a private equity number that bought it, so we couldn't find out.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: And it sat there for five and a half years.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: And and and during that five and a half years, nobody was was there to look after things, uh or so we know how quickly that can make things deteriorate, right?
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: Especially when you're out in the boonies like you are.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: It must have been uh quite the sight when you finally got your hands on it.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: Like it um like nature takes itself back very fast.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Um there was poplar trees all over that were seven, eight feet high.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: They were only like three inches around, maybe.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Um, but they were everywhere.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: The grass was hip high.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Um all the buildings, the outside of them were, you know, all the paint had dwindled and withered off of them.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, animals were living in all buildings.
- 28:08SPEAKER_04: Like oh my god.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: But you guys stayed.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: There was animals living in the cabin you stayed in, and it's I'm sure you can vouch for it now.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: It's one of the more elite cabins you'll ever see on the market.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's gorgeous.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: I love what you've done with the place because you made some subtle changes that uh you know, most uh honestly, most uh lodge operators don't think are necessary.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: However, as people who visit a lot of lodges and outpost camps, I can tell you that those things are becoming more and more necessary every day.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: For example, uh, and not the least of which, you have ensuites in all the bedrooms in that cabin that we were at, so every cabin has its own bathroom.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: You don't think that's a big deal until you have five or six guys staying in a cabin.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Then that becomes a big deal.
- 28:59SPEAKER_04: You gotta light a bonfire after every crap they take because it stinks the whole place out.
- 29:03SPEAKER_04: So it's kind of nice, yeah.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: You know what it's true though, right?
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Like you you know, like two, two, three guys with one bedroom, bathroom, even starts to get a little much, but like, yeah, every bedroom on our property has a private three-piece bathroom.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Or, you know, if it's uh a day like today up here, like today, it's I woke up this morning, it was minus two.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Ouch.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Um already, right?
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: No kidding.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: No, but you can click that heat on, you know, and that's uh that's what's kind of separating us.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: We were finding where we are, you know.
- 29:56SPEAKER_04: It's that we gotta run a hundred kilowatt generator to be there, but those cabins make a big difference.
- 30:01SPEAKER_04: I was just about to ask your your electrical system because that's taxing on.
- 30:04SPEAKER_04: I mean, when you're in an air conditioning, that many units go on full fledged in the summertime, man.
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: That that uh generator must be going full full out too, right?
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: Well, we so this summer we actually we bought a brand new 100 kilowatt to take load.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: The last we had a 60 kilowatt Pete, uh John Deere, and it was a little older.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: It was there when we when we got the property.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: So um we blew two turbos in that this summer when it was over 100 degrees up here.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: And finally we were like, after the second turbo, uh, we were like, that's enough of this.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: So we just bought what we needed, and we plan on expanding, you know.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: Like we we plan on having a uh a hot tub there for for utilization.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: We plan on having a sauna, finished sauna.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: So those little kind of things like that, they're they're gonna take a little more juice.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, listen, those are creature comforts that uh, like I said, you just don't find in most places, and it's maybe not for everybody.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Let's be honest about it.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Maybe maybe there are folks who who are listening to this right now saying, well, what's the point of going out in the boonies if you've got all those creature comforts?
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: I uh will tell you that the point is that there is no reason on God's earth that we can't enjoy outstanding fishing.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, unheard of world-class fishing that you can only get in remote parts of the world and not have creature comforts.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: There's nobody who wrote that rule and said you cannot.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: If you can marry the two, it's a bonus.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: I look at it as a bonus.
- 31:41SPEAKER_04: It's an absolute bonus.
- 31:43SPEAKER_04: If you can't afford it, do it.
- 31:44SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 31:45SPEAKER_04: Some people can't afford it, so you then you go with a rougher, you know, outpost or something like that.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: But that's hey, that's part of the game.
- 31:50SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, right?
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: I think it comes down to an age thing, uh, is is really like we get lots of families, and whether they're families or corporate venues that that are younger, you know, yes, but majority, I would say close to 70% of my clientele are gonna be 60 and above.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: So, you know, they put their years in of doing that with their families, and and and a lot of them still might even do it, come hunting season or different trip with the boys.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: But there is times where it calls that for a for a decent rate that uh what that we offer, a really a really decent rate, that people can come and have those kind of pampered experiences, right?
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: And and it's yeah, I told you, I told you when when we were up there, you need to raise those rates.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: They're too low.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: Too low.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: I know, I know.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: But anyway, I know.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: We won't get into that.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: Um, the the uniqueness of, of course, the two river systems meeting right there at your front door, the fact that you've got uh uh 600 kilometer waterway that you can access from from your your docks uh every day, you can go in a different direction, different part of I mean it's it's very unique.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: You have got a very unique setup there that uh has to be now that you've brought it back to life, and um the fishing, by the way, I don't know what it was like before the five-year moratorium, but it's now on fire.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's world class, right?
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: And I don't know whether it was bad before or good now because of the five years, I have no idea, and I really don't care.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: I really don't care.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: All I can hear about now is that it is outstanding.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: If you're looking to uh get a personal best in pretty much any category, and I said this on the on the episode that we shot that will air in January.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: Um, if you're looking to get a personal best in any of the freshwater categories, which includes walleye, which includes pike, uh uh musky, smallmouth bass, I think you stand as good a chance there as you do anywhere else on earth.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: It's it's that good, man.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's that good.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: It's that good.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: Another thing that uh people listening, a lot of times if you go to like a lake of the woods, a laxuel we're talking about, Lake Winnipeg, these are gigantic bodies of water, but they're gigantic in the sense that they're they're open.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: And when a when a big wind comes up, you are euchre.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: You're staying in that lodge and playing cards all that day, et cetera, et cetera, even if it's a perfect sunny day.
- 34:31SPEAKER_04: Uh where uh at two rivers where Will is a river system.
- 34:35SPEAKER_04: So it's it's completely like we had super strong winds two at least two of the days.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: Crazy.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: No problem getting go.
- 34:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you got a couple of spots where you're in open spots where you get a little bit wet.
- 34:45SPEAKER_04: Even there, it wasn't bad at all.
- 34:46SPEAKER_04: But there's always protected water there, like no matter where you go, being a river system, it gets and it's and it's a beautiful boat ride up and back, and no matter where you're going, it's a gorgeous boat ride, but there's always protected water too.
- 34:57SPEAKER_04: And there's and honest, honestly, there's walleye, at least walleye, in every inch of that friggin'.
- 35:03SPEAKER_04: You can't get away from it.
- 35:04SPEAKER_04: You can't get away from it, right?
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: It's insane.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: I told Adam um one day that we were there, and as much as he knows the water, and as much as he's got, you know, the and and you do too, because I mean you worked there before you bought it, before it went under.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: You you were a guide there, so you know probably as much, if not more, than anybody else now uh on that water system, as far as hot spots go.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: But I'll bet you guys haven't even touched 10% of the fish that are on that system.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: No, that you're right.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: Like when I was guiding, like majority of the guides would have a milk run, right?
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: You know, and you know, you step outside that here and there, right?
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: But like you didn't need to.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: So I'll be honest, the structure, the structure on that system, not only is it the size, and there's a lake portion and the rivers, like every like you're saying, Ange, but there's also you can go and fish weed beds, sand flaps, rock piles, points, yeah, currents, every dams, yeah, bridges, anything you want to fish.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Open water.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: There's the open water health service.
- 36:20SPEAKER_04: Open water.
- 36:21SPEAKER_04: You can fish it right in the open.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: We got that's where we get our best fish.
- 36:23SPEAKER_04: Open water.
- 36:24SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: You know, you know, like we're right.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: We probably haven't touched anywhere close to even what we could think.
- 36:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: It'd be a great place to go up and just spend the summer and looking.
- 36:36SPEAKER_04: Not not have any pressure on you in the sense of producing fish for clients or whatever, blah, blah, blah.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: Just to go up and try and discover new water.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: You imagine what you could find, Willie.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: It'd be like it would be it would be insane.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Well, I'll tell you right now, Pete, don't ever quit your job to be a lodge owner because you never get to fish when you do what I do.
- 36:53SPEAKER_04: We know, we know that one for sure.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: No, it would be uh it would be a fantastic body to truly experience.
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: Okay, well, now give the people an idea of where you're located in Ontario on a map, let's just say, because you're up there.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: There's no doubt about it.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: So we're so from Kenora.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: So Kenora would be the 25 minutes from the border of Manitoba and Ontario, okay, in in sunset country.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: So we are pretty much right on the border of Manitoba and Ontario.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: And from Kenora, we are straight north 50 minutes.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: So let's say an hour.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's an hour.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: So an hour straight north.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's to get to our landing where you would put your boat in, or we sorry, where we would pick you up with our boat, where you guys put your boat in.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: Um, andor you can fly up too.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: So a lot of places, a lot of people just fly into Winnipeg and they fly back to the east for Winnipeg.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: It's like a 25-minute flight, um, relative pricing.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: And same for Kenora.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: Some guys fly up in the private jet, some guys fly in or drive in and want the float plane.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: So they'll drive to Kenora and they'll just shoot up in that.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that's where we are.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Um, like I say, an hour north of Kenora, straight on the border there, Pete, of Manitoba and Ontario.
- 38:11SPEAKER_04: Right on.
- 38:12SPEAKER_04: And when and when do you open uh for customers?
- 38:15SPEAKER_04: When does the lodge open and close?
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: So May 15th, third, the third Saturday in May is always walleye opener.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: We open that weekend, the Thursday we accept the guests.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: It usually is the 14th, 15th.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, we close October 1st.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: Now, this year we closed a little early because I'm sure as some of the viewers know that do know my background, this is my sixth year building lodges, and uh I'm tired.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: So we uh decided we decided to take some time for my family this fall.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: And and uh, but yeah, October 1st will be will be 2027's closing season.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: Right up.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we have talked about all of the uh wonderful things like the fishing and uh the amenities and all that stuff, but I believe possibly and maybe arguably the highlight of our stay with you was the food.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: Oh what's going on with that?
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Like, are you serious?
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that that guy fell into my lap.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: So I had I had Chef Jarrett at Nordic, and he was fantastic.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: He was he was elite.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Um and then with with just switching, you know, when I sold out there and uh I was gonna take some time, and then this, you know, the the two rivers thing uh developed faster than I anticipated.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Um I had to find a new chef.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: And chef Dave, he he's from Winnipeg.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: Um he's a self-taught guy.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: He uh he actually was a stockbroker.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, he was a stockbroker.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: He still is.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Oh my god he trades in the offseason and um he works as a chef.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: So he he started learning, you know, at 20 years old, 2020 years old, worked his way through the winters in some high-end hotels, and then he had he had gotten in with as a Sioux chef with um with an executive, and uh he kind of coached him along and and was self-taught at home at the same time.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: He has no no school education at all.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: Wow, and uh I'm shocked.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: And he did, yeah, like he he is ridiculously good.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: He's good, there is no doubt about that.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Every meal was an experience, yeah.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, every single night was an experience.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: Uh outstanding.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: You know, I uh I said this to you, And Pete, when you guys showed up, but those things you're saying, like the food and that being an experience and the cabins being I I learned that from you guys, from Steve, and you two.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, as we've grown together here, I've learned that.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Like that, you know, when you walked into my cabins and you told me it was, you know, like no one had been there before.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's what I wanted to feel, and that's what we were going for, right?
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: I I feel there's two things here that I feel.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: I feel that customer service has gotten forgotten about extremely.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: You know, up here in the north, it it's it's really it's sad to see in a lot of places.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of great places, but there's a lot that you hear horror stories from these guests um um with when it comes to their customer service, and that's super important to us.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: I don't ever want to I've put a whole life in already in the oil field and tournament fishing and and uh enough to know that money isn't everything, and I wanna we do this every day to make people happy and to make that feeling for us.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: And uh we customer service is number one.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: The other thing is the product, you know, like there's a lot of people that that don't realize the you know, the the hawk leaks and and the and the Lodge 88s of the world, you know, they're those are rare.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: They're not we because you see them on TV and they're very popular, you know, they're they're rare.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: And we want we want to be in that market, and we feel we are.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: We've we want we we want to be that that level that Ted is to be a customer service guy like that, to be too, you know, and and we've learned that from all you guys and everybody that we've had surrounding us, you know, the the Carol Caputas of the world and the everybody, you know.
- 42:42SPEAKER_04: So yeah, you're there, buddy.
- 42:44SPEAKER_04: You get you're there with those ones for sure.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Without question, without question.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Uh and and possibly on uh the cusp of exceeding if things keep going the way they're going and your fishery maintains itself, the difficulty base that fishing, eh?
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: The difficulty that you have, um, and and I don't want to throw a negative into all of this, but the only difficulty that you have with what you've started there is that you don't have total 100% control over the fishery, meaning that all the well-intended management tools that you put in place, which you do, unfortunately, you've got other operators and folks who can just basically boat in there and use the you know the waterway that don't necessarily have to follow those rules.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: So that's the only negative I can give uh to you about your operation.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: If you had total control of it, man, it would be even more if I had a scenario like tet with Teddies for sure.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, hey.
- 43:50SPEAKER_04: Well, tell everybody too about your your shore lunch experience because that was different for us too, and it was awesome.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, for sure.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: So, so we kind of have two different Setups.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: Um we have if it's if it's semi even semi-windy, just because we don't we I don't play with fires, you know.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: You guys were there.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: You saw what two and a half kilometers from my property, you know, it burnt like 50 kilometers, 50 miles at least.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: So, like I mean, I was lucky to have my lodge.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: You know, I I I we always want to give that experience to everybody, but we have to do it in a safe manner and and work so we can do it for years to come.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: So if there's any kind of bad weather at all, we stay at the lodge and we have a beautiful door deck 60 by 80 feet.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, there's nice patio furniture on it, a love scene sectional.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: Um, we're actually gonna build this year, we're gonna build in the front left corner a bar.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: So when you come up, our bartender, instead of uh being inside all the time, when when short lunches are outside there at the lodge, she'll be down there to serve drinks.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Um we do everything a little, you know, like Adam will do a little the guides get together and do their potatoes and they do their they do their um their beans and corn and and we do fish, you know, just like everyone else, I guess.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: But but we but we add variety, you know.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: That's we'll have a little bit of Frank's fish or a little bit of beer batter, a little bit of lemon pepper, you know, a little bit of spicy.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: Um, so we do have a variety.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: So we have that option there, and then excuse me, guys.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: And then the other is we know when it's a beautiful sunny day, right around the corner from our lodge, we have a beautiful beach.
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: Like it almost looks like you're in the Dominican Republic.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: It's such white sound.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's right.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: And and that one we set up for like so you go over there and it's got be it's got the chairs out, you know, um it's got it's got covered areas, so you're out of the sun, and it's kind of the same experience, but you're cooking on the beach, right?
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: You know, we really find a lot of the people being an older clientele I have, we give it their, we give them the choice.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: So if it's kind of looking kind of crappy out, you know, we'll ask them, do you guys want to come back here today?
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: And 95% of the time, it's yes, because they're protected, they're covered, they can use the bathroom.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 46:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: When you're 60 years old, you don't want to be hanging over the boat all day, or you in front of people, you want to use the bathroom.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: And some people, you know, they just they want the privacy, and uh, you know, that that's important.
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: So so yeah, we go and kind of give it to them the experience to to them to choose, and we offer it in two different ways.
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: That's every day.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: That is every day we do it.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: Every day we do shore lunch, never every day.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: So lunch is shore lunch basically every day, either at the lodge or not far from the lodge.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: Um, which is a wonderful touch, by the way, instead of having to eat sandwiches and all that.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: Although I you do you do supply those two if somebody doesn't want to come in for lunch, obviously.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: Uh but but for the most part, why wouldn't you come in for lunch?
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: Everything is nice and close.
- 47:19SPEAKER_01: You're never that far away from the lodge that you can't run in for an hour, right?
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: It is cool.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Now, I want to also for folks uh that are in the GTA or let's say southern Ontario, whether it's the west or the east, uh you know, we're not gonna sugarcoat this.
- 47:41SPEAKER_01: It is a long drive.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I wanna I want to, but you know, whenever we go up to northwestern Ontario, the drive is kind of part of the adventure for us.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: Even though we've been doing it for 40 years, even though we probably have more miles, kilometers uh back and forth, it it's an experience every time.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and something usually happens or you see something each time that we make that trip.
- 48:10SPEAKER_04: And that that's from experience.
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: The person that does it for the first time, if you're gonna be in awe going up Lake Superior, Shorelina Highway 17.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: It is so spectacular.
- 48:20SPEAKER_04: You'll you've seen nothing like that in your life, guaranteed.
- 48:22SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: And just going through these little towns that you know, these iconic little towns that you've got.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're great.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Um that we've all heard of and you've read stories about to be able to drive through and stop and get gas and stuff, it it it I'm telling you, it's part of the experience.
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: I'm not suggesting that you do this every day, but you know, we we have kind of grown up with the notion that if you want to go to a family, um, extraordinary family adventure involving rides and and and fairy tales and that, we we drive 27, 28 hours to go to Florida to go to Disney.
- 49:01SPEAKER_01: That's right, and it's part of the adventure.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: Well, northwestern Ontario, and in particular, uh this Two Rivers Lodge that we're talking about now is exactly that.
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: Think of it as exactly that.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: It is a destination, and the two-day trip in is all part of the adventure, for sure.
- 49:20SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 49:20SPEAKER_00: And I mean, like, so I would say honestly, so I've lived, I grew up where you guys are in Coburg.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I uh I know that mentality of that would be far.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Like to me, when I was a kid, like between there and Bancroft, where I was raised with my grandfather as an older kid, um, at his place, you know, that was a long way.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: If I went to Algonquin, it was like half a day, right?
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: Like but but as when you go west, so like as I worked in the oil field, everywhere I went was eight, ten hours.
- 49:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, to go from Edmonton to whatever is this, or you know, Saskatoon to Edmonton was it, it it was always relative to the lengths.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: And so here it's the same.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, you're it might take you a day and a half to drive here, it's you know, two days, but it's really, or you can do as much as get on a flight with West Jet or Air Canada, and you're here in an hour and a half to two hours, and you can float plane in, or we bring you in on a shuttle, you know.
- 50:24SPEAKER_00: So there is those options as well.
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: But in theoretic, the experience half it is getting getting there.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 50:31SPEAKER_04: Any idea, Will, of a of a price from Toronto to Winnipeg, let's say, with a flight uh West Jet or something like that?
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: Is there an approximate so I just had my my two cousins Derek and Adam Luples, they're from down uh Lindsay and Bowmanville there.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: They went to to Pearson 250 bucks, and that was with a carry-on and a bag, you know, um personal bag, and it was 250 bucks, and that was return.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: So that was booked in advance, yeah, and I think it was swoop or something, but like if West Yet, I've booked lots of flights for for guests that I do have from Ontario, down Toronto, and they're usually between three to three fifty, and that's return.
- 51:17SPEAKER_04: That's pretty reasonable.
- 51:18SPEAKER_04: And you think, well, how much gas would we have burned pulling our boat up there?
- 51:21SPEAKER_04: A lot more than 350.
- 51:22SPEAKER_04: I'll guarantee.
- 51:24SPEAKER_04: 350 in time.
- 51:25SPEAKER_04: 350 percent stop.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: You're 350 before you hit White River without a doubt.
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: Uh but you as you said, you'd have to book those in advance, right?
- 51:35SPEAKER_01: But even in a worst case scenario, for five or six hundred bucks, right?
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: Meaning last minute, you can you can get a flight.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's not that far.
- 51:51SPEAKER_01: If you've only got uh a day's worth of travel that you can afford in terms of time, a day in and a day out, then obviously flying uh is ideal.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: Absolutely ideal.
- 52:03SPEAKER_04: Because that makes a big difference for a person.
- 52:04SPEAKER_04: We we spent four days on the road.
- 52:07SPEAKER_04: So when you're taking holidays, that's another extra four out of five days, an extra work week of holidays for driving.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: Some people say might say we're always on holidays.
- 52:15SPEAKER_04: So most people have no clue.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I've seen what you guys do in the background.
- 52:21SPEAKER_00: They have no clue.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: I can vote for that first.
- 52:25SPEAKER_00: Thanks, brother.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: You boys work your tail off.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: We can say that for sure.
- 52:30SPEAKER_01: Well, we uh we enjoy and love doing it.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: We especially enjoy going to new places um and not having any surprises that you know, and as much as we're there for work, we also do enjoy that that that the surroundings and and the food, the amenities, etc.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: And I gotta tell you, you knocked it out of the park, and I can see, and having spent some time talking to you about it, I can see that the the growth plans that you've got, uh yeah, there's a good future coming.
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: I can only add to what is already, in my opinion, uh a product that aside from maybe a handful of very elite um outdoors people have ever even seen.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: So you're already there, but with the plans that you've got moving forward over the next few years, oh my God.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: I hope I hope I'm there to enjoy it with you when you get to that point.
- 53:32SPEAKER_04: We are excited.
- 53:32SPEAKER_04: We're excited.
- 53:34SPEAKER_04: You're on my you're on our you're already on our highly recommended list after that trip right there, buddy.
- 53:40SPEAKER_04: You're already there.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: So the episodes uh will be airing um starting January sometime uh this new year 2027.
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: And so you can see firsthand exactly what we're talking about.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: The fishing, you know, and I I I I wouldn't say that we broke any personal bests, um, only because, as you know, Will, the weather was not very cooperative for us when we were up there, except for maybe a day and a half.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: So we didn't have a whole lot of good quality time on the water.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: But just from what we experienced, um, I mean that when I said that at the beginning of this piece is that if you're looking to break your your personal best in walleye in northern pike, uh muskie, I'm not so sure.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know more about that up there than we certainly would.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: And and getting a a 50 is not out of the question, from what I understand.
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: Oh no, it's just like the bike, and we we just didn't do any muskie, and yeah, we were all pike and so yeah.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: So so that's there, and the quality and quantity of freshwater species that we encountered is breathtaking.
- 54:50SPEAKER_04: Just to let the audience understand, when Ann says the weather sh kind of shut it down, it didn't shut the fishing down, it shut our shooting down.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: It was rain coming in and out with wind, so we can't get the cameras out during that.
- 55:01SPEAKER_04: So we don't even bother wasting because if we catch a big fish when that happens, it's you're done.
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so so we don't shoot.
- 55:07SPEAKER_04: So it wasn't a matter of the weather.
- 55:09SPEAKER_04: If you're not shooting TV like we're doing and you want to fish straight through that stuff, you've got a good chance at a personal best for sure.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 55:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, well, and let's be real, right?
- 55:18SPEAKER_00: You guys have been shooting, you guys have been filming for 40 years and fishing for probably 50, right?
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: So exactly.
- 55:23SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean, like I the the fish that I know that we're that we put on that you guys put on that camera were you know you they're they're awesome, and I'm excited for people to see them quality.
- 55:33SPEAKER_04: They're quality quality for sure.
- 55:36SPEAKER_04: You're gonna like these shows, people.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Um when should folks I know you have already started uh getting quite busy.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: Um when do you start booking?
- 55:47SPEAKER_01: When should people if if somebody listening to this right now or watching this right now has interest in joining you in 2027, uh when should they get a hold of you?
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: Now like yeah, like we're I would say don't wait till the new year.
- 56:05SPEAKER_00: Um like I'm close to 60% full for next year already.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 56:09SPEAKER_00: I'll give you an example.
- 56:10SPEAKER_00: I just had a I just had a company reach out to me two days ago, and they want a group of 60 for six days, so two groups of 30 back to back.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 56:22SPEAKER_00: Um and that's in that's in September, they want it for.
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: So in a time where it's not as heavily, you know, or we're not we're not as busy that time of the year, right?
- 56:32SPEAKER_00: So um, and that just happened two days ago.
- 56:34SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I would say uh it's it is one of those places that fills up fast and the repeat the clients are repeat.
- 56:41SPEAKER_00: So if you do want in, um look us up at two riverslodge.net or give me a call on my my phone anytime, guys.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: Uh prime time if somebody wants nothing but the best possible week there.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: I would say last week of May to the first two weeks of June, that early post-fawn in, because everything's still shallow.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: And even it seems to be on our lake, even though a post-pawn it don't matter.
- 57:08SPEAKER_00: Like you'll still catch another fish today.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: Um and then the late season would be the end of August in that first two weeks of September, like when you guys were there.
- 57:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: Everything is hot and everything is hungry.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: Highly recommend it from the boys here for sure, my friend.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, you uh you put on a good a good show for us, without question.
- 57:31SPEAKER_01: And uh people here in Canada and U.S.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: will get a chance to view it uh starting early in 2027 on the Fish in Canada show.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: So they won't have to take our word for it anymore, man.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: And you want to see the bookings go then, people.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: You want to be before that.
- 57:45SPEAKER_04: Trust us.
- 57:46SPEAKER_04: Uh well's the point.

- 58:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, boys, take care.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I I I know we might have sounded like a little bit over the top in our praise, but it it was that no, it's that good.
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: There's no over the top.
- 58:36SPEAKER_04: Like, honestly, people that are you're listening.
- 58:39SPEAKER_04: If you want a top, uh, a top-notch lodge in Ontario, this is one of the best.
- 58:44SPEAKER_04: There's no doubt about it.
- 58:46SPEAKER_04: It's one of the best, combinations-wise and fishing-wise.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: I can't, uh you know, when we got back, I I was going through it in my mind.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: I was looking for negatives, looking for negatives.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: There's got to be something that we missed.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: There's got to be a negative here.
- 59:00SPEAKER_04: I missed the mosquitoes.
- 59:02SPEAKER_04: We missed the black flies and mosquitoes each week.
- 59:03SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, we missed those.
- 59:05SPEAKER_04: It was even good in that sense.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: Like, what the heck?
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: But even the docks, hey, they seem to be just perfect.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: They're they're in a little inlet uh out of the wind, so it doesn't matter where the wind's blowing from, docking the boats.
- 59:18SPEAKER_04: The lodge boats are beauties, beautiful.
- 59:20SPEAKER_04: The guides are great.
- 59:21SPEAKER_04: The guys we knew knew some of the guides, and some were new to us, and they were fantastic.
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: By the way, we forgot to mention it's a shame, but uh you can only get there, you can only get there through one package.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: Will has only one package, and that is an all-inclusive package that uh includes a daily guide.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: So you cannot know that, right?
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: You cannot get there and start cherry-picking your options.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: It's just one package.

- 59:56SPEAKER_01: If we if we want to talk about booze, that's all part of the package.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: The the food, the boat, the guide, anything that they have there is yours for one price.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: And that's why I told them that's pretty awesome.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: It's it's he's got to raise his prices, but I won't even talk about what that price is.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: Because the countess just walked through our studio here.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_02: I don't want her hearing how you had free moves and you still brought all that stuff up with you.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_04: She just has to be pretending to work or not.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_01: So, anyways, uh look it up.
