- 0:29This is Haley Rudger with the Becker's Payer
- 0:31Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:33Becker's third annual spring payer issues roundtable.
- 0:36I am thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:38Sareya Sacochio, chief medical officer at Essence Health.
- 0:41Sareya, thank you so much for joining me
- 0:43today. Can you go ahead and tell us
- 0:44a little bit more about yourself and your
- 0:46background? Sure, Haley. And what a fantastic conference.
- 0:49I just have to say the voices in
- 0:51the room, the energy that we're feeling here
- 0:54today is
- 0:55fantastic.
- 0:56So and I'm so impressed with the way
- 0:58you said my name. Soria Sancosio. Very good.
- 1:01I'm the chief medical officer for Essence Health,
- 1:04and we are a Medicare Advantage health plan.
- 1:06We've got about 60,000
- 1:08members.
- 1:09We focus on a physician led approach for
- 1:11true value based care.
- 1:13Awesome.
- 1:14Well, to begin our conversation, I'd like to
- 1:16start talking about balancing affordability and quality. So
- 1:19how is your organization innovating to manage the
- 1:22cost of care while maintaining or improving member
- 1:24outcomes?
- 1:25I like to describe the work that we
- 1:27do as an action packed
- 1:30documentary.
- 1:31I'm gonna start with a documentary because it's
- 1:33so important to be factual with what we
- 1:35do and accurate
- 1:37with how we document the clinical story of
- 1:39the patient.
- 1:40Where the action comes from is that PCP
- 1:43engagement that we have. Quality of care is
- 1:46critical in everything we do. Every visit, every
- 1:49time, we focus on taking care of that
- 1:51patient, not just for chronic disease, but for
- 1:54preventive medicine,
- 1:55chronic disease to optimize
- 1:57the vitality of health for our members. So
- 1:59it takes a whole team to do this.
- 2:01And by telling the story,
- 2:04we have an action packed documentary.
- 2:06Well, that was an awesome way of explaining
- 2:08that. Now moving on to my next question,
- 2:11what are some of the best practices or
- 2:13tools that your organization relies on to keep
- 2:15quality of care at the forefront?
- 2:17Well, first of all, Haley, we keep it
- 2:19simple.
- 2:20And I've got an acronym that I use,
- 2:22a PPD.
- 2:23So the clinicians who are listening will get
- 2:25a PPD and what we're looking for there.
- 2:27But for us, it is truly about
- 2:30starting with primary care.
- 2:32That access to a PCP cannot be overemphasized
- 2:36how important that is. The relationship
- 2:38between a patient and their primary care physician
- 2:40is everything
- 2:41because they know how to give good care,
- 2:44But it takes a frequency of access to
- 2:47primary care to ensure that you're covering both
- 2:49preventive and chronic disease.
- 2:51We partner with our physicians
- 2:54and engage at a high level. In fact,
- 2:56they help us develop our program
- 2:58based on what they believe our patients, our
- 3:00members need, and you can't do that without
- 3:02data.
- 3:03And instead of just saying we have data
- 3:05analytics and just like everyone else, we do
- 3:07have a tech stack, of course, but we
- 3:09data enable
- 3:11our PCPs to be very successful
- 3:13and for our members to receive the best
- 3:15care every time.
- 3:17Our tech stack helps them not only see
- 3:20the individual patient as they're in the exam
- 3:22room, but their entire population. Because what often
- 3:25is missed is the patient who doesn't cross
- 3:28the threshold.
- 3:29So we believe that outreach to every patient,
- 3:32every member is critical to good health care.
- 3:35Awesome. Now I wanna take a moment to
- 3:37address health equity, which is a critical focus
- 3:40for many health plans. Can you share an
- 3:42overview of a key initiative here that you're
- 3:44involved in or particularly excited about, and what
- 3:46are you hoping to achieve? I sure can
- 3:48in one word. Community.
- 3:50And community means so many things to us
- 3:52at Essence Health. Community means our team members,
- 3:56And it takes every single one of us
- 3:57to understand what is health equity and why
- 4:00it matters because it does. Whether you're the
- 4:03member in the room
- 4:05or you are the PCP serving this patient,
- 4:09we need to understand how to meet everyone
- 4:11where they are
- 4:12when they need it. So that's something that
- 4:14we do. I'll also say that community engagement
- 4:18is important.
- 4:19So often we try to do our things
- 4:21ourselves as a family physician.
- 4:23I I'm a self starter, and I think
- 4:25I can do everything myself. I can't. It
- 4:27takes a team. It takes a community.
- 4:29And why we're not only partnering
- 4:32with community
- 4:34nonprofits,
- 4:35We partner with the community in our health
- 4:38systems as they already have these relationships. We
- 4:40can do so much more together
- 4:42to have the greatest impact
- 4:44if we focus on the big c. Absolutely.
- 4:48Now for my final question today, I wanna
- 4:50talk about the future of the payer space.
- 4:53So what do you see as the biggest
- 4:55opportunity for payers to lead the charge in
- 4:57transforming care delivery and driving better outcomes for
- 5:00all stakeholders? And how can leaders take a
- 5:01step in this direction now?
- 5:03Well, the latest
- 5:05sexiest acronym
- 5:07is I know you know this one. It's
- 5:10AI. Okay. Okay. We talk about AI every
- 5:13day, and it is so sexy, but we
- 5:15need to demystify
- 5:17Mhmm. AI.
- 5:18It is everyone's job to understand AI. In
- 5:21fact, we all do AI. If you've been
- 5:22on Google lately, you have AI ed.
- 5:25And so whether it's our members
- 5:27that understand AI and how to use it
- 5:29best, our team members, and our primary care
- 5:32physicians. That is critical in the work that
- 5:34we do. Demystify,
- 5:36educate,
- 5:37and let's train everybody up to be successful
- 5:39in that. The last thing I'll share is
- 5:41about technology.
- 5:43For example, with our company, with Essence,
- 5:45we are the first health plan that Oura,
- 5:48Rings, have partnered with. So our Medicare Advantage
- 5:52Plan offers to some of our members Oura
- 5:55access,
- 5:56And this gives us the opportunity
- 5:58to
- 5:59partner for the greatest health and vitality
- 6:02that each member can have, whether it's measuring
- 6:05their sleep, their heart rate, how active they
- 6:08are. All of these things matter. And then
- 6:10we partner with our physicians
- 6:12to create the greatest impact with that medical
- 6:15information now available.
- 6:17Yeah. That's really amazing. I feel like I
- 6:19haven't gone a single day without hearing about
- 6:21the word AI. You know? Mhmm.
- 6:24Mhmm. Well, thank you so much for joining
- 6:26me today on the Becker's Payer podcast. Again,
- 6:28this is Haley Recker.
- 6:30We were recording live at the Becker's third
- 6:32annual spring pair issues roundtable. Sariya, thank you
- 6:35so much. Thank you, and have fun at
- 6:38this fantastic conference. Thanks. You too.
