- 0:00Can we come now together to 2nd Kings chapter 22 And we are
- 0:04going to complete this chapter tonight by the grace of God.
- 0:09And I invite you to come to verse eight of Second Kings
- 0:11chapter 22. There are many things that stir
- 0:19my heart about the Scriptures. One thing that never fails to
- 0:24move my soul is what the Word of God says about itself.
- 0:32You are very aware that the Bible repeatedly discusses and
- 0:37declares and testifies to its own divine authorship, its
- 0:42reliability, its necessity, sufficiency, and supremacy in
- 0:51sanctifying us and satisfying us.
- 0:57And for us to absorb what the Word of God says about its own
- 1:00revelation is not only instructive, but inspires us to
- 1:05understand the treasure that the Scriptures truly are.
- 1:10Now I bring this up by way of introduction because it leads us
- 1:13perfectly into the very core of our study this evening.
- 1:18You see, what we're going to witness in the rest of this
- 1:21chapter is a pivotal moment in the life of King Josiah and the
- 1:25Kingdom of Judah as a whole. And this transition that is
- 1:30going to take place will be the result of Josiah being
- 1:36encountered by the written Word of God.
- 1:42It is spectacular to see, but we have to remind ourselves of some
- 1:48facts. In the 12th year of Josiah's
- 1:51reign he brought reform to the country, and that continued
- 1:57until the 18th year of his administration.
- 2:02And in the 18th year, he turned his attention to the temple of
- 2:06the Lord, the House of worship, and he sought to repair it
- 2:10because in recent history, and for many years actually, the
- 2:15temple had been neglected. And not just neglected, it had
- 2:19been vandalized by idolatry. And so there is a process that
- 2:27was started by King Josiah. He, he sought to raise funds and
- 2:32he put men to work to see the temple honored again.
- 2:37And it was in that pursuit that a discovery was made by some of
- 2:43Josiah's top officials. And I want you to read with me
- 2:47what it is in Second Kings 22, verse 8.
- 2:51Let's read down to verse 11. And Hilkiah the high priest,
- 2:56said to Chiffon the secretary, I found the book of the law in the
- 3:01House of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to
- 3:05Chiffon, and he read it. And Chiffon the secretary came
- 3:10to the king and reported to the king, Your servants have emptied
- 3:14out the money that was found in the house and have delivered it
- 3:17into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the House
- 3:21of the Lord. Then Chiffon the secretary told
- 3:24the king, Hill Kai, the priest has given me a book, and Chiffon
- 3:29read it before the king. When the king heard the words of
- 3:34the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes.
- 3:40Father, we ask with total sincerity that you would teach
- 3:48us. Lord, we echo the psalmist cry
- 3:53who said, Oh how I love your law.
- 3:56It is my meditation all the day. Lord, we are people who have
- 4:00gathered here because we love Your law and we pray that you
- 4:04would bring illumination to our hearts that we may understand it
- 4:08the way you've called us to know it, and that we may apply it to
- 4:11our lives the way You've intended it to be applied.
- 4:14Lord, we ask that you would you would truly transform us as a
- 4:19result of what we will uncover here in this passage.
- 4:22We give you maximum glory and honor in advance for what You
- 4:27will do as a result of what we will study.
- 4:30In Jesus name we pray these things.
- 4:32Amen. How strange is it to read that
- 4:40the High Priest found the Book of the Law in the House of God
- 4:49as though its presence there was unexpected.
- 4:55Now most of us here I'm sure understand that the 10
- 4:58Commandments were to be placed in the Ark of the Covenant, but
- 5:04very few remember what item was to be placed beside the Ark of
- 5:09the Covenant. If you need a reference, this is
- 5:12an important one. It's in Deuteronomy 31 verse 26.
- 5:16I will read it to you. This is what Moses commanded the
- 5:19people of Israel to do before they even entered into the land
- 5:22of promise. He had said this.
- 5:26Take this book of the Law, and put it by the side of the Ark of
- 5:31the Covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a
- 5:35witness against you. So a copy of the law was to be
- 5:42protected and preserved by placing it beside the ark of the
- 5:47Covenant, which resided in the innermost century of the temple.
- 5:53Now if that was where the Book of the Law was to be, then why
- 5:57is it that Hilkiah the priest speaks about it's discovery as
- 6:04though it was a surprising sight?
- 6:08That's the impression that we get here, that Hilkiah finds the
- 6:12book of the Law and he communicates its discovery.
- 6:15But it should be a given. That's where the Book of the Law
- 6:19was to be found. And here's the answer.
- 6:23Because for so long the Word of God was ignored and bypassed by
- 6:28the very people of God. Look back at verse 8 quickly and
- 6:33notice how Hilkiah gives the book of the law to this man
- 6:36named Shafan, who was a secretary.
- 6:38And we read here that Shafan, when he received it, opened the
- 6:42book and he began to read it. Now, that seems to imply that
- 6:46there is a level of unfamiliarity, that Shafan here
- 6:52never engaged with its words before, that he is new to this
- 6:55content and he's a leader. So here's what you're supposed
- 7:01to get from this, that the leaders in the Kingdom of God
- 7:08don't seem to be very familiar with the oracles of God.
- 7:12This seems to be like a strange thing to them.
- 7:16And if it was unfamiliar to the leaders of this Kingdom, how
- 7:20much more so the rest of the people?
- 7:23In fact, did you see what happened to King Josiah when
- 7:26Chiffon took the book? He updated the king with the
- 7:30recent project of the temple being reconstructed and he
- 7:35mentions how the book was found to what to find the king in
- 7:43utter shock and grief, as though he had never engaged with the
- 7:48word. As though this was the first
- 7:51time that the king himself is hearing the word of God.
- 7:57Now, why should that be a concerning observation for us?
- 8:00Any idea you can answer if you know why is the King's reaction
- 8:04something that should concern us exactly?
- 8:09We've seen this over and over in our study of the kings.
- 8:12We're told in Deuteronomy 1718 that the kings were to have a
- 8:17personal copy of the law. It was to be approved by the
- 8:20priest, and it was to be read daily by the king.
- 8:24So if King Josiah was to have a copy, then why act in this way
- 8:29when the book of the Law is being read in your presence?
- 8:33Shouldn't you have known it? Shouldn't you been aware?
- 8:39But there's even more to this that makes it so amazing.
- 8:44Go to Deuteronomy 31. Now look at verse 9.
- 8:48So in Deuteronomy 31, verse 26, we read that the book of the Law
- 8:51was to be placed beside the Ark of the Covenant.
- 8:53But before that, Moses gave instructions of what the people
- 8:56were to do with the book of the Law, at least as a nation.
- 9:02In Deuteronomy 31, nine, we read.
- 9:04Then Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priest, the sons
- 9:07of Levi, who carried the ark of the Covenant of the Lord, and to
- 9:11all the elders of Israel, and Moses commanded them.
- 9:14At the end of every seven years, at the set time in the year of
- 9:18release, at the Feast of Booths, when all Israel comes to appear
- 9:22before the Lord your God at the place that He will choose, you
- 9:24shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing.
- 9:32So the priests were to take the law and shine it bright like a
- 9:36lighthouse to the rest of the nation and faithfully proclaim
- 9:40it and read it to the people. Every seven years this was to
- 9:45take place. They were committed to gather.
- 9:47They were commanded to listen on top of the regular instruction
- 9:51that they would receive by the priest on a daily basis.
- 9:56Now, if you keep this practice in mind and you realize that
- 9:59Josiah found the book of the law in the 18th year of his reign,
- 10:03simple math will show that this observance should have been
- 10:07honored at least twice, at least twice under his government.
- 10:14And clearly he hasn't. Why?
- 10:16They just found the book. They just found it.
- 10:22So now we're we're getting idea, an idea of just how dire things
- 10:25are even under Josiah's leadership.
- 10:28And I don't know about you, but when I discovered this, I
- 10:31thought to myself many things. A flood of questions came to my
- 10:35mind, but the main one was this second.
- 10:38Kings 22 opens up with a wonderful commendation about
- 10:41Josiah, that he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord,
- 10:46that he walked in the ways of David.
- 10:50How did he do that without the book of the law?
- 10:54What standard did Josiah used in the past six years as he was
- 10:59bringing reform to the nation? I believe the best answer is
- 11:09that there must have been some kind of oral teaching and
- 11:11tradition that was passed down. And though we're left in the
- 11:18dark with this, there could be fragments of the Scriptures that
- 11:23were preserved and used and shared among the righteous,
- 11:30though incomplete enough to guide Josiah in a righteous
- 11:35direction. Now, I don't want to spend too
- 11:38much time speculating. What I want to do instead in
- 11:41this introduction is look at clearly three things, at least
- 11:46three or three things that are powerfully inspirational
- 11:51relating to the Word of God. The first thing I want to
- 11:55observe, and we're all just in verse 8 right now, by the way,
- 11:59looking at verse 8, at least three things #1 being God's
- 12:02protection over His Word. You won't come to that
- 12:06conclusion if you read the story in isolation.
- 12:09You have to include the wider narrative of the kings.
- 12:13Think about some of the wicked leaders that sat on the same
- 12:16throne that Josiah was sitting on in our study.
- 12:20Think of Athalia, think of a has, think of Manessa, these
- 12:28individuals that not only promoted idolatry among the
- 12:31people of God, but even dare to defile the temple of God.
- 12:38And through all those cycles of pollution and persecution, what
- 12:42do you find in the second Kings 22 verse 8?
- 12:45The word of God survived. The Word of God was preserved,
- 12:51it was untouched, it was kept. That becomes even more
- 12:56remarkable when you realize that so many of the things in the
- 12:59temple were tampered with. Let me give you an example in
- 13:03the parallel account of Second Kings 22.
- 13:06After they made this discovery, another reformation takes place,
- 13:12and Josiah now begins to give further instruction.
- 13:16And I want to just read to you what he tells the priest again
- 13:19after they find the book of the Law.
- 13:21Listen to this in Second Chronicles 35.
- 13:24It says here in verse 2 he appointed the priest to their
- 13:27offices and encouraged them in the service of the House of the
- 13:30Lord. And he said to the Levites, who
- 13:32taught all Israel and who are holy to the Lord, put the holy
- 13:37ark in the house that Solomon the son of David, king of Israel
- 13:40built. You need not carry it on your
- 13:42shoulders. Now serve the Lord your God and
- 13:44his people Israel. What stands out to you from
- 13:48that? The Ark of the Covenant was not
- 13:51in the temple. Where was it?
- 13:53We don't know. So just imagine all the things
- 13:57that were misplaced, all the things that were again
- 14:00mishandled, dishonored, moved, and yet the Word of God was
- 14:08found in the House of God. Here's how this applies to us.
- 14:13Throughout Scripture, and even in recorded history following
- 14:17the completion of the Canon, men have dared to try and destroy
- 14:25the Word of God to no avail. Governments have tried to bury
- 14:30it, burn it, silence it. Philosophers, great thinkers,
- 14:37religions have attempted to compete with it.
- 14:41And yet the Word of God, the true Word of God, remains as
- 14:45relevant as ever. Do you know why?
- 14:47Because God promised that it would endure and abide forever.
- 14:51He promised that. And this is just a glimpse of
- 14:54how His invisible hand was guarding His Word and that
- 15:00through all the evil that was taking place, nothing could
- 15:05touch what He had provided man concerning himself, God's
- 15:09protection over His Word. That's what we find here in
- 15:11verse 8. But we also see, secondly, God's
- 15:14reward for the righteous. It would be a great mistake to
- 15:19assume that the leaders of this Kingdom accidentally stumbled
- 15:25upon the work and the Word of God.
- 15:29Undoubtedly, this is divine Providence in motion.
- 15:34And when you consider the timing of the book of the law being
- 15:38discovered, then we are granted a wonderful insight.
- 15:42Think about it. Josiah has proven to the Lord
- 15:47that to the best of his ability he would honor him though he was
- 15:51limited in his knowledge. He sought to bring pleasure and
- 15:55blessing to the heart of God as he firstly sought to be pious
- 15:59himself and that promote others to worship the true and living
- 16:02God. And here's what we find that God
- 16:06watching his servant as a result of his pure heart and his
- 16:10consistent sacrifice, allowed and arranged for the complete
- 16:14Word of God to be uncovered. For what reason?
- 16:21To bring the Reformation to new heights.
- 16:22That's what we're going to find in Second Kings 23.
- 16:27And this is how we learn. This is what we find in this
- 16:31truth. When you and I are faithful with
- 16:34what we have and what we know now, God is prepared to give us
- 16:40more. God is ready to give you and I
- 16:44more when you are faithful, what you have and what you know now,
- 16:50greater insight, deeper revelation, and sometimes more
- 16:57open doors and opportunities for you to advance his work.
- 17:01I see here that God blesses Josiah to do more, to know more
- 17:07because with what he had, he was faithful.
- 17:14And this is something that challenged me because we're
- 17:17introduced to Josiah at 8 becoming king, and then at 16 he
- 17:23sought God for himself, and then at 20 he led a spiritual reform
- 17:31and he did all of that without a Bible.
- 17:38Does that convict anybody else? That convicts me.
- 17:43So what excuse do you and I have in our lack of pursuit of the
- 17:50Lord, in our slothfulness and serving God, when God has given
- 17:54us everything that we need to know about Him?
- 17:59That stirred me. That moved me.
- 18:03You have a man, you had a teenager at 16 and later at 20
- 18:09who stood out in history for his walk with God, and he didn't
- 18:14even have the Bible. We should be the most motivated
- 18:22generation in all of church history.
- 18:26The access that we have to the Word of God, the availability to
- 18:33men of God who bring greater light to the Word of God,
- 18:38everything that is at our disposal should make us the most
- 18:42energized and faithful generation of Christians that
- 18:46has ever been known. The third thing, we're still in
- 18:52verse 8. The third thing to consider is
- 18:57God's warning to His church. This is how this passage should
- 19:02alarm us. You and I have to be careful not
- 19:05to lose the Word of God in the House of God.
- 19:11It's tragically possible for churches and their buildings to
- 19:17possess Bibles yet lose it in practice because they don't read
- 19:25it carefully, they don't study it passionately, and more
- 19:33importantly, they rarely apply it the way it's calling us to
- 19:37apply it. This story serves as a sobering
- 19:43reminder of how ministries can display Bibles.
- 19:47Yet those Bibles may hold no authority over the leadership in
- 19:50the people. Was the Bible in the temple?
- 19:54Yes, but it was layered with dust unless it is cracked open
- 20:02and actually read and expounded and explained and obeyed.
- 20:09It doesn't matter how many Bibles you have.
- 20:10It doesn't matter if you have Bible in the name of your
- 20:13church. Is it any wonder that corruption
- 20:18persisted for so long in the land?
- 20:23This is where the Word of God has been all, all along.
- 20:27It was buried, it was in the dark, and surely because of
- 20:31that, it played a major role in the erosion of society.
- 20:38Here's what that means for us. If we don't value God's Word in
- 20:41here, why should we expect them to be curious about it out
- 20:45there? If it's not something that we
- 20:48treasure and we value and we sing about and we love to learn
- 20:52from and more importantly, to live by, why will people out
- 20:55there care for it? They won't.
- 21:00So this is a warning that you can lose the Bible in a church.
- 21:06It can be there, you can put it on something like that, but
- 21:11until it is read, until it is digested, until it is lived,
- 21:18we're not fulfilling its design. Speaking of valuing God's Word,
- 21:25there's a character in this story that stood out to me, and
- 21:27he can easily be overlooked. Chiffon, the secretary, not much
- 21:33is said about him, but what we do have about him reveals that
- 21:37he must have been a faithful servant.
- 21:40He was a support to the king and his efforts.
- 21:43There is no hint whatsoever that he was to face or that he was
- 21:47suspicious or that he was wicked.
- 21:50And why I mentioned Shafan here is because for our instruction
- 21:55we read about his reaction to the Word of God.
- 21:59And I believe it's a reflection on how some believers fail to
- 22:07esteem the Scriptures as they ought to.
- 22:11Here's what I mean by that. First thing I want you to notice
- 22:14is this man Chiffon and his initial reaction to the Word of
- 22:19God being read. Look back at verse 8 and Helkaid
- 22:23the high priest said to Chiffon the secretary, I found the book
- 22:26of the law in the House of the Lord, and Helkaid gave the book
- 22:28to Chiffon and he read it. Where's the reaction?
- 22:32There isn't any saying what's the big deal?
- 22:36Well, I think there's a big deal when you compare it to how
- 22:38Josiah responds to it. You remember what he did.
- 22:41Look again at verse 11. When the king heard the words of
- 22:44the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes.
- 22:47Huh. Why did the king react this way
- 22:52and not the other leaders, including the priest, Chiffon,
- 22:56and the priest? They didn't tear their clothes,
- 22:59but the king did. I think that's telling.
- 23:03And this analysis of Chiffon only becomes more convincing
- 23:07when you look at the second thing.
- 23:09The second thing I want you to notice is the priority of his
- 23:12news when he brought an update to the king.
- 23:15Look again at verse 9. And Chiffon the secretary came
- 23:18to the king and reported to the king.
- 23:20Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the
- 23:22house and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have
- 23:25the oversight of the House of the Lord.
- 23:27Then Chiffon the secretary told the king, he'll kind.
- 23:30The priest has given me a book. What was on Chiffon's mind as a
- 23:36priority? The money, the workmen, the
- 23:43physical repair of the temple. And then he brought up the fact
- 23:48that they found the Bible as though the Word of God was an
- 23:56afterthought. Is that possible for Christians
- 24:01too? Absolutely.
- 24:05It's most definitely possible for Christians even to not have
- 24:11the Word of God as their priority, neither in their
- 24:14ambitions nor their affections. There are more important things
- 24:21to attend to. There are more exciting things
- 24:24to discuss. And we find here that there is
- 24:32insight, perhaps to why it is. And maybe you're in this place
- 24:36and you can't figure out why you find greater excitement and
- 24:43thrill and delight in other things more than the glorious
- 24:48truth of God's Word. Perhaps Chiffon's perception of
- 24:55the Scriptures teaches us something, which is our final
- 24:59observation. Did you notice how this man
- 25:03references the Book of the Law? Look again at verse 10.
- 25:08What does he say? Then Chiffon the secretary told
- 25:11the king. Hilkiah, the priest has given me
- 25:15a book. Wait a minute, Chiffon, you were
- 25:23in the temple when Hilkiah told you what?
- 25:27The book of the Law has been found, and you took it with you.
- 25:35You walked to the king and you said, Oh yeah, by the way,
- 25:41Hilkiah found a book. How do you see the Bible?
- 25:50Is it just a book among other books?
- 25:55Of course not. Innumerable books have been
- 25:58written about this incomparable book.
- 26:04But we have to go beyond acknowledging the Bible's
- 26:07uniqueness. You can't just stay there.
- 26:10You have to establish what the Bible truly is if you're ever,
- 26:13and I'm ever going to have the chance of feasting on it.
- 26:19I read somewhere that the Bible is the heart of God in print.
- 26:27What a simple but breathtaking thought.
- 26:30The Bible is the heart of God in print.
- 26:35Absolutely it is. And you and I have to believe
- 26:38that this book is an inexhaustible, life giving, soul
- 26:44transforming collection of divine truth miraculously
- 26:48provided and protected by God Himself, for you to know who He
- 26:54is and become more like Him. That's the Bible.
- 27:01I have read quite a few books, but I can say with total honesty
- 27:05that after reading through it once, I put it on my shelf never
- 27:09to visit it again. I've never been able to do that
- 27:13with the Bible. Do you know why?
- 27:15Because it's God's voice. That's why when you read this
- 27:22word or hear it being read, you are hearing God speak.
- 27:32And if you don't see this Bible for the gift that it is, the
- 27:38miraculous DNA that it possesses, then you are in
- 27:42danger of just seeing it as a book.
- 27:46Now you wouldn't say that you're a Christian, but in practice it
- 27:51may just be to you another book. Unlike Shafan, Josiah's heart
- 28:00recognized that this is not just any book.
- 28:02It was God's book. And if we truly believe that
- 28:07this is the word of the Lord, then I am sure that we will
- 28:10respond to it and like manner we will see some similar
- 28:14characteristics in Josiah. Let me show you what I mean.
- 28:18We stopped at verse 11, but let's now continue in verse 12.
- 28:23And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Haikam the son
- 28:26of Shafan, and Akbar the son of Micaiah.
- 28:29And she found the secretary, and Asahi the King's servant,
- 28:32saying, Go, inquire the Lord for me, and for the people, and for
- 28:35all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been
- 28:38found. For great is the wrath of the
- 28:40Lord that is kindled against us because our fathers have not
- 28:43obeyed the words of this book to do according to all that is
- 28:47written concerning us. Verse 11 to verse 13.
- 28:54What do we see here? The appropriate response to the
- 28:57written Word of God, Number one, verse 11.
- 29:00God's word has to touch your heart.
- 29:04What does the king do when he hears the words?
- 29:06He tears his clothes. A sign of great mourning, of
- 29:10loss, of grief. Clearly Shafan pass through some
- 29:15of the passages about judgement as we're going to see, but the
- 29:19the the clothes being torn was a was a symptom was a reaction to
- 29:24a heart that's been touched. Here's what you have to ask
- 29:27yourself. Please ask yourself this.
- 29:29Does God's word touch your heart or does it just tickle your
- 29:32brain? Big difference.
- 29:36I'm not saying that you have to cry every time that you hear you
- 29:39hear a sermon or you come to your devotions, but does it move
- 29:44the innermost part of who you are?
- 29:49Does it touch you? Does it stir you?
- 29:51Do you carry it with you in your heart?
- 29:56That's what we see here with this man.
- 30:00He didn't just sit back and analyze.
- 30:03He didn't just compare. It was like a harpoon to the
- 30:08chest. It penetrated the seat of his
- 30:12emotions, sure, but also the throne of his will, his
- 30:17perception, his worldview, his inlook, his outlook.
- 30:22Does the Bible do that to you? But the word of God inflaming
- 30:27our feelings is is not the main thing.
- 30:32What we find in verse 12, the Bible became top priority.
- 30:37The word of God, the will of God became priority number one to
- 30:41this man. How do we know that?
- 30:43Well, he summons not one, but five of his top officials to
- 30:48fetch for a profit, to receive greater guidance and clarity
- 30:52about what he had just heard. Question Does it take five
- 30:56people to find somebody? No, you just need one.
- 31:01So why does he find 5 of the leaders?
- 31:06Because he wants to stop everything else.
- 31:09This is emergency protocol. We need to find a prophet who's
- 31:12going to give us light on what we just heard, and he gets the
- 31:16best of his men to do so. So unlike Chiffon, this is top
- 31:23priority to the king. What is the Bible rank for you?
- 31:32How high do you esteem it? How much do you Revere it?
- 31:38What's the worth that you've placed on the written Word of
- 31:41God? You know what this man does?
- 31:44Stop everything. Stop absolutely everything.
- 31:48I needed to know where to go from here.
- 31:50I can't remain in the dark. Lastly, verse 13, the Word of
- 31:59God being read. Move this king into action.
- 32:06Go inquire of the Lord for me #1 for me.
- 32:12He talks about the people and Judah after, but first for me.
- 32:19This is important for preachers. The Word of God has to cut your
- 32:22heart before it cuts anybody else's.
- 32:24It has to move you before it moves anybody else.
- 32:28It has to be applied to you in terms of application, in terms
- 32:31of change, repentance, before it can be issued to anybody else.
- 32:35What does this mean for me, me, me, me.
- 32:39And then how does this apply to my role as a leader?
- 32:45So in the mind of this king, the Word of God effects and
- 32:49influences every aspect of his life.
- 32:50There's not one compartment that's left untouched.
- 32:54Me and the people, the nation, me as a king.
- 32:56What, what, what do I have to do now?
- 32:57What does this imply? How much does the Word of God
- 33:03govern your life? Some parts?
- 33:11Just your morning time? Or is it harnessed?
- 33:18Is it something that guides you and directs you and informs you
- 33:21and shapes your thinking and rebukes you where you're wrong
- 33:26and comforts you where you need encouragement?
- 33:31This man shows us exactly where the Word of God needs to be,
- 33:33everywhere, every part. And so they go, and as they go
- 33:43we see something interesting. Verse 14 So al Qaeda priest and
- 33:53Haikam and Akbar and Shafan and Isaiah went to hold out the
- 33:57prophetess. The wife of Shalom, the son of
- 34:00Tikvah, son of Har has keeper of the wardrobe.
- 34:04Now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter and they
- 34:07talked with her. Who was the prophet that was
- 34:15working with Josiah during his reform?
- 34:18Anybody remember good Jeremiah? Was there another one?
- 34:24We didn't mention this in our Bible study, but it's worth
- 34:25bringing up. Now apart from Jeremiah, who
- 34:28else did God raise up to assist the king and bringing the people
- 34:32to the Lord? Zephaniah.
- 34:38You can look at this in your own time.
- 34:39Zephaniah 11. We're told there that the man
- 34:42Zephaniah was commissioned by God during the reign of Josiah.
- 34:46Those are prominent prophets. So you have these two leading
- 34:51prophetic voices in the land. Why did the king dispatch his
- 34:57man to go to hold that? The prophetess who's Holder and
- 35:01not to Jeremiah or Zephaniah? We're not told, but I believe
- 35:09the fact that we are told here where she lived may give us a
- 35:13clue. Where did she live?
- 35:15In Jerusalem in the second quarter, which was in close
- 35:18proximity to the Temple. I think this shows that Holder
- 35:26was more readily available to receive a word from the Lord and
- 35:31give it by extension to the King and the leaders, while the other
- 35:35prophets were not as accessible. The fact that her address is
- 35:39mentioned may be an indication that she was someone that could
- 35:43be easily reached. Moreover, there is no indication
- 35:48that hold of the Prophet has had a wide public ministry, a public
- 35:51ministry at all. What's more likely is that she
- 35:54was a gifted woman who had great insight and sensitivity to the
- 35:58Spirit of God who from time to time was approach for private
- 36:02consultation because obviously she was known, she wasn't just a
- 36:06random prophetess. I mentioned this in passing
- 36:11because you'll have some who will point to halt of the
- 36:14Prophetess as a proof text that women can be spiritual leaders
- 36:18in the church. And there is absolutely no
- 36:21indication that Hall that possesses any kind of authority
- 36:25over any man. In fact, we're specifically told
- 36:28what that she is the wife of Shalom and Shalom was what in
- 36:34charge of the wardrobe, which was most likely the wardrobe of
- 36:37the priests. So this is not a text that you
- 36:41can go to to say women can be pastors.
- 36:47Now she's a flash on the pan. She appears very quickly and she
- 36:50disappears just as fast. That is not the discount that
- 36:55God uses her, though. If anything, this is to inspire
- 36:59us that sisters and the Lord can be so filled with the Spirit of
- 37:02God and so bestow with wisdom that they can have a major,
- 37:06wonderful contribution to blessing God's Kingdom and
- 37:09advancing His work. That's what we find here.
- 37:13To say that this is something that supports woman elders is
- 37:16just an abuse of this text. Take it for what it is.
- 37:21God uses woman, not just men. God can fill woman with his
- 37:26spirit and with great insight to actually even help brothers in
- 37:29the Lord. That's what we're supposed to
- 37:31take from this. What's more important is the
- 37:36message that she has for the king and the Kingdom.
- 37:39Let's read from verse 15 down to 19.
- 37:42And we're, we're finished here in our study.
- 37:45And she said to them, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,
- 37:49tell the man who sent you to me. Thus says the Lord, Behold, I
- 37:54will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants.
- 37:58All the words of the book that the king of Judah has read,
- 38:01because they have forsaken me and have made offerings to other
- 38:05gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of
- 38:08their hands. Therefore my wrath will be
- 38:11kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.
- 38:15But to the King of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord,
- 38:18thus shall you say to him. Thus says the Lord, the God of
- 38:22Israel, regarding the words that you have heard, because your
- 38:25heart was penitent, and you humbled yourself before the
- 38:28Lord, when you heard how I spoke against this place and against
- 38:32its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a
- 38:35curse. And you have torn your clothes
- 38:37and have wept before me. I also have heard you declares
- 38:42the Lord. There are so many things that we
- 38:47can draw from this message. One thing I want to bring to
- 38:52your attention before the main thing.
- 38:55Notice how she begins in verse 15 that says the Lord the God of
- 38:58Israel. Tell the man who sent you to me,
- 39:05go to verse 18, but to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire
- 39:09of the Lord. Holda is inspired by the Spirit
- 39:12of God to address the king initially as the man.
- 39:19Is this disrespect? No, it's the Spirit of God
- 39:22speaking. God wants to emphasize and
- 39:27remind the king exactly that you are a man.
- 39:34And the word of God has a way of reminding us who of who we truly
- 39:37are over and over again, no matter our position, no matter
- 39:42your accolades, no matter your pedigree, God's word never fails
- 39:47to humble us if we receive what it has to say.
- 39:50Yes, she will acknowledge the fact that he is indeed a king, a
- 39:53leader, But first, Josiah, before God, you're a man.
- 40:00Josiah had no problem with that. And here's the main thing again.
- 40:05You can imagine what we can take from this, but I don't want to
- 40:08overwhelm anyone. My prayer, my sincere prayer, is
- 40:13that there's one thought that you would leave from this place.
- 40:15It's this one. This is a strong word.
- 40:20Judgement is coming not to the Kingdom of Israel.
- 40:23They already were exiled. It's now coming to the Kingdom
- 40:26of Judah, and nothing can change it.
- 40:29It's going to manifest ultimately in their own exile.
- 40:32This is tragic. It can't get any worse than
- 40:36this. The people of God being removed,
- 40:38not just the people of God. We saw that with the Kingdom of
- 40:40Israel, but the dynasty of David.
- 40:44This is almost unthinkable, but it's true.
- 40:47It's going to happen. However, Josiah receives a
- 40:52personal promise. You are not going to see this in
- 40:58your lifetime. This judgement that I have
- 41:01planned will be suspended until you die.
- 41:06You will not have to witness the horrors of God's chastisement.
- 41:13You will live in peace. On what basis?
- 41:18For one incredible reason. This is the main point that I
- 41:22want us to leave with. Please look again at verse 19.
- 41:26The Lord says because your heart was penitent and you humbled
- 41:32yourself before the Lord when you heard how I spoke against
- 41:39this place. God rewarded Josiah for how he
- 41:48responded to the word of God when it was read.
- 41:55Here's what that means for you and I.
- 41:58The Lord takes into account what happens in your heart every time
- 42:05you encounter the Scriptures, whether with your eyes or
- 42:11through your ears. Every single time God looks at
- 42:17your heart and mind. To see how we respond to the
- 42:21Word of God. And one of the immediate rewards
- 42:28is what we find in verse 19, when we have the humility and
- 42:33the eagerness and the longing to receive from God's Word.
- 42:37What did you see at the end? I also, I've heard you, declares
- 42:44the Lord Josiah, because you heard me carefully, humbly,
- 42:51passionately. I'm going to hear you.
- 42:54You know what that shows me? God first considers how you hear
- 43:00Him before He considers how He hears you.
- 43:07Having trouble in your prayers being answered?
- 43:11Can I recommend something? How have you been hearing God's
- 43:13word? What's your heart posture been
- 43:18like as God's words been preached to you week after week?
- 43:24How do you hear God's word when you're face to face with it on
- 43:27your own? What's your heart like?
- 43:29Because I want to tell you something.
- 43:31God considers how you hear His word before He even considers
- 43:34hearing what you have to say to Him.
- 43:36Because you've heard me, I'm going to hear you.
- 43:39And I can show you text after text after text from Genesis to
- 43:43Revelation that proves that same truth over and over again.
- 43:54If you find yourself nowhere near Josiah's heart posture
- 44:00toward the Word of God, what have you done about it?
- 44:05Maybe at one point it was there. Your heart was touched.
- 44:10It was a top priority in your life.
- 44:12It has governed every aspect of your existence.
- 44:16But those convictions are being lost, or they have been lost.
- 44:20You've deviated from that. Well, have you ever at any point
- 44:26prayed with the psalmist, prayed, for example, in Psalm
- 44:29119, verse 36? Incline my heart to your
- 44:32testimonies and not to selfish gain.
- 44:35Do something with this art because for too long it's been
- 44:39dull towards your word. It's been far too easily
- 44:43distracted and satisfied and lesser pathetic things in this
- 44:50life. Oh, what does he say, Josiah?
- 44:56I've been looking and watching. How have you responded to my
- 44:59words? So now I'm ready to hear what
- 45:01you have to say. Do we find anything like this in
- 45:05the New Testament? Absolutely.
- 45:07If you've been with us in the Gospel of Mark, why don't we end
- 45:09here? Go to Mark chapter 4 just to see
- 45:12what Jesus says about this principle.
- 45:22Mark 4 verse 24 Jesus and verse 24 we read and he said to them,
- 45:37pay attention to what you hear with the measure you use.
- 45:41It will be measured to you and still more will be added to you.
- 45:45For the one who has, more will be given, and for the one who
- 45:48has not, even what he has will be taken away.
- 45:54Pay attention to what you hear. Implying what?
- 45:57That in the presence of God's Word you're not paying
- 46:00attention. That's possible.
- 46:04And what happens if I don't pay attention?
- 46:06Nothing. No, actually no, not nothing.
- 46:09Over time, whatever you do have, it'll be taken away.
- 46:17Say, what does that mean? Well, it happens in the natural
- 46:20many ways. What happens if you stop
- 46:22exercising? Do you just remain as you are?
- 46:26How I wish. You lose muscle, you lose
- 46:31endurance. You lose strength.
- 46:35What happens if you don't practice a language?
- 46:38You just stay at that same level of understanding and
- 46:41communication. Absolutely not.
- 46:43I can testify to it. You lose.
- 46:47You lose words, sentences, grammar to the point where you
- 46:53have to revisit basic language skills and knowledge to retrieve
- 46:58what you had lost. That's exactly what Jesus is
- 47:01saying here. Something is dulled, something
- 47:04is blunted in your spiritual insight over time when you fail
- 47:10to pay attention continually to the word Word of God.
- 47:16But what's the reward? If you do?
- 47:18Then more will be given. Isn't that what we see with
- 47:20Josiah? More was given.
- 47:22He had little to work with. But six years later as he's
- 47:26doing what he can to serve God. Here's the complete book.
- 47:30And when it's revealed to him, his heart was moved and so God
- 47:32rewards him even more. You heard me, I'll hear you.
- 47:37And Josiah, as we're going to find in the next chapter, will
- 47:39be one of the greatest kings that Judah has ever known.
- 47:41Let me read the last verse of chapter 22.
- 47:44The Lord promised to him. Therefore, behold, I will gather
- 47:46you to your Father's, and you shall be gathered to your grave
- 47:49in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that
- 47:52will bring upon this place. And they brought back word to
- 47:57the king. What would you do if you heard
- 48:01that God was going to judge the people under your care, not in
- 48:08your lifetime, but eventually? What kind of motivation would
- 48:13that leave you with to do anything during your
- 48:15administration? What you're going to see Josiah
- 48:20do, even though he would be spared from judgement, even
- 48:23though judgement was definite, makes him even more
- 48:25inspirational. But we can't go there yet, can
- 48:29we? Let's pray.
- 48:55Father, we've heard your word, We've heard your word about the
- 48:59Word, and Lord, we're here because we value your word.
- 49:08But Lord, it's possible to be here and not really be here.
- 49:15And so we ask you leaving this place, that you would give us
- 49:20the same spirit as this man who was urgent, who was humble, who
- 49:30was hungry for the words of this book.
- 49:36Lord, if any of us possess the spirit of this secretary
- 49:38chiffon, we may not be evil or outright, outright wicked, but
- 49:45we're casual. We're preoccupied by other
- 49:48things in life and in practice. This book is just a book
- 49:55changes. Lord, we pray what the psalmist
- 49:59said. I will run in the way of your
- 50:02commandments when you enlarge my heart.
- 50:05So enlarge our hearts this evening so that we would chase
- 50:10after the things of God. Thank you for speaking to us.
- 50:15Help us with renewed strength and focus to pay attention to
- 50:21what we hear that we may know your full reward in this life.
- 50:26We ask these things in the name of the word of God, Jesus
- 50:29Christ, Amen and Amen. Let's stand and worship the
- 50:33Lord.
