- 0:00Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of Half-Faith,
- 0:03Let It Begin. I'm your host, Angel Santana.
- 0:06Today, we're going to go back in time, back to the 80s, 90s,
- 0:10and early 2000s to talk about what back-to-school used to look like for us and
- 0:17how different it is for kids today.
- 0:19Let's laugh a little, reflect a little, and of course, end with a prayer.
- 0:24Half-Faith, Let It Begin. Going back in time starts right now.
- 0:29Have faith, live again, when it starts right now.
- 0:36Welcome to Have Faith. Let it begin. Here's your host, Angel Santana.
- 0:42Ariel, can you say, have faith? Let it begin. Let it begin? Let it begin. Say, have faith.
- 0:51Let it begin. Let it begin. No. No? No? Okay. Hi, Noah. Noah! Noah!
- 0:59Happy birthday, Noah! Katelyn, oh, that was amazing. Katelyn,
- 1:03I'm gonna say something.
- 1:08Noah! This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shy.
- 1:13This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shy.
- 1:18This little light of shy. I'm gonna let it shy. Let it shy.
- 1:24Let it shy. Let it Sounds. Yeah.
- 1:30Daddy, I'm so excited, but I have one question. What's your question?
- 1:34Are you going to be a pastor or a minister?
- 1:36Good question. I don't know, but it is all in God's hands. Good morning.
- 1:41You're listening to Half-Faith Let It Begin, and it starts right now.
- 1:46Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of Half-Faith Let It Begin.
- 1:50I'm your host, Angel Santana.
- 1:52Again, we are taking a trip down memory lane. That's right.
- 1:55It's the back to school season for some of us that means excitement for others
- 2:00maybe a little stress and for me personally this year is extra special because
- 2:05my son Noah is going back to school for the very first time and I'll be honest
- 2:09it's been a big adjustment and it feels.
- 2:12A little bit like an empty nest moment which I explained to you yesterday but
- 2:17we'll get back into that a little bit. Let's have some fun first.
- 2:21Let's go back in time, back to the 80s, 90s, early 2000s, and compare how we
- 2:28did back to school versus how kids do it today.
- 2:32Well, let's talk with you a little bit about the nostalgia.
- 2:36Remember to back to school shopping. Oh man, it was like Christmas in September,
- 2:41walking through the aisles, picking out the best notebooks, the sharpest pencils,
- 2:45number two pencils, I must add.
- 2:47And of course, the one thing everybody wanted, the Trapper Keeper.
- 2:51If you had a Trapper Keeper, you were basically royalty.
- 2:55And who could forget the Lisa Frank folders, so bright, so colorful,
- 3:00or those brand new mechanical pencils that always broke on the first day.
- 3:05Then there were the lunchboxes. Forget your plain brown bag. No, no, no.
- 3:12You had to have the Ninja Turtles or maybe the Power Rangers,
- 3:16maybe even Pokemon, Spice Girls, and they were like the most popular things, right?
- 3:25And of course, the thermos. You had to have the thermos. If you didn't have
- 3:28the matching thermos, you just weren't complete. Oh, yes.
- 3:33The first day outfit. We got to remember that.
- 3:36You laid it out the night before. You got your fresh new sneakers, the brand new jeans.
- 3:41You'd walk into class hoping that no one would step on those shoes because the
- 3:47first scuff was just devastating.
- 3:50Oh yeah, I remember that.
- 3:52Yeah, that's just a little bit. Let's talk about the then versus now.
- 3:57Back then, the supply list was simple. A couple of pencils, crayons,
- 4:02glue sticks, and maybe a ruler.
- 4:04Today, kids are carrying sanitizers, tissues, wipes, headphones,
- 4:10and sometimes even a flash drive.
- 4:13Technology. Oh, we've come a long way.
- 4:16We had chalkboards and overhead projectors. If you were really advanced,
- 4:21you had the clear sheet with the teacher handwriting glowing on the wall.
- 4:26Now we have smart boards, iPads, laptops, even smart watches.
- 4:33Passing notes in class was the original text message.
- 4:37You folded the paper with precision. And if you got the, if it got intercepted,
- 4:42actually, now that I think about it, if you got intercepted by the teacher,
- 4:45oh boy, the embarrassment, because the teachers would probably read it out loud.
- 4:49Yeah. Today's kids just text under their desk.
- 4:54Well, you know, I spoke about Noah and his first day, and here I am decades
- 4:59later sending my little boy off to school yesterday for the first time.
- 5:04Today, Ariel and Noah go to school, and I'll admit it hit me harder than I thought.
- 5:09It's only preschool, but seeing him with his tiny backpack walking in with such
- 5:15confidence made me proud, and honestly, a little teary.
- 5:20Parents, you know what I mean. The moment you realize that your baby's growing
- 5:25up for the first time, for some of you, you've already been there and already through it.
- 5:31For others, maybe you're like me, experiencing it for the first or second time.
- 5:36And for those whose kids are older,
- 5:39you're probably still remembering that feeling like it was yesterday.
- 5:42Yeah, we can think about the humor and the relatable moments.
- 5:46You know what else I remember? Covering our textbooks with paper grocery bags
- 5:51and then doodling all over them, of course.
- 5:55Or those giant backpacks. We were so small and the backpacks were particularly bigger than we were.
- 6:03And let's not forget the classic locker combination struggle. Ugh.
- 6:08You'd get it once, then completely blank the next time.
- 6:12Left, right, left, nope. Locked out again.
- 6:18Reflections of the past are weird. Let's talk about faith.
- 6:24You know, times change. Technology changes. Even the fashion changes.
- 6:28But one thing that never changed is the need for encouragement, love, and faith.
- 6:35Back then, we prayed for good, good friends, good teachers, and maybe even good grades.
- 6:41Today, we add prayers for safety, health, and peace of mind.
- 6:46As parents or grandparents, teachers, or friends, we can all do our part to
- 6:51surround our kids with positivity, patience, and prayer.
- 6:56So let's pray today. Let's pray for all those that are going back to school.
- 7:02Heavenly Father, we thank you for this new school year. We ask that you bless
- 7:06every child from preschool to college students, protect them as they go to school
- 7:12each day, give them confidence, wisdom, and joy.
- 7:16Bless the teachers and staff who work tirelessly to guide them and bless the
- 7:21parents who watch their children grow and let them go step by step.
- 7:28May every classroom be filled with kindness, patience, and learning.
- 7:32We place our trust in you to watch over our children and keep them safe.
- 7:38In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
- 7:41I wanna thank you all so much for joining me today on this back to school special, part two.
