- 0:00Hey everyone , and welcome back to Spy Trader !
- 0:03I'm your host , Dr.
- 0:04DollarSense , bringing you the latest market buzz and what it means for your portfolio .
- 0:10It's 6 am on Thursday , August 28th , 2025 , Pacific , and we've got a lot to unpack .
- 0:18Let's dive straight into the headlines .
- 0:21Our major US indices are still flying high , with the S&P 500 hitting a new alltime high of 6,481.40 yesterday , and the Nasdaq and Dow also closing higher .
- 0:34It's been a strong year for these benchmarks , with the S&P up over 10% yeartodate .
- 0:41However , there are some interesting undercurrents .
- 0:44Nvidia , the AI powerhouse , reported earnings that beat expectations , but there was a catch : AI chipset sales grew at a slower pace than analysts wanted , causing the stock to dip 3.2% in afterhours trading .
- 0:59This is a big one , folks , as Nvidia often sets the tone for the broader tech sector .
- 1:04On the M&A front , dealmaking is absolutely surging , crossing the 1 trillion mark since June , a 30% increase from last year .
- 1:15We've seen massive deals like Union Pacific's agreement to acquire Norfolk Southern for over 80 billion , Palo Alto Networks' planned purchase of CyberArk for 25 billion , and AT&T's 23 billion deal to acquire spectrum licenses from EchoStar .
- 1:33This indicates companies are aggressively repositioning , possibly spurred by a softening regulatory environment and the push for AI innovation .
- 1:43But it's not all rainbows and sunshine .
- 1:46New US tariffs on hundreds of goods , including Indian exports , have taken effect , adding to global market volatility and stirring consumer concerns about rising prices .
- 1:57And speaking of earnings , keep an eye out for Dell Technologies , which is set to report its numbers today .
- 2:04Now for our market analysis and insights .
- 2:07While the headline numbers look fantastic with those new highs , the market is presenting a complex picture .
- 2:14The US economy grew at a strong 3.3% in the second quarter of 2025 , driven by consumer spending .
- 2:22That's a solid rebound from the first quarter's contraction .
- 2:26But peel back a layer , and we see some challenges .
- 2:29Inflation remains stubbornly above the Federal Reserve's 2% target , with the annual CPI at 2.7% and Core PCE at 2.92% for July .
- 2:42Consumers are feeling it , with average 12month inflation expectations increasing to 6.2% in August .
- 2:50The labor market is also showing signs of softening , with only 73,000 jobs added in July , far below expectations , and the unemployment rate ticking up to 4.2% .
- 3:04Consumer anxiety over job prospects has grown for eight straight months , and that measure of shortterm expectations for income , business , and jobs dipped to 74.8 , which , if it stays below 80 , can signal an upcoming recession .
- 3:21The Fed , meanwhile , kept rates steady at 4.25% to 4.50% at its July meeting , with Chair Powell waiting for more August and September data before considering any policy changes .
- 3:35On the sector front , it's been a mixed bag this year .
- 3:38Communications services , Industrials , Utilities , and Technology have been leading the charge , with Communications up a whopping 16.8% yeartodate .
- 3:48Technology , specifically AI , continues to be a major driver , converging with cloud computing and big data .
- 3:56Industrials are benefiting from infrastructure investments , manufacturing revitalization , and AI automation .
- 4:04Financials are also seeing tailwinds from potential rate cuts and regulatory relief .
- 4:09On the flip side , Health Care , Consumer Discretionary , and Energy have lagged the broader market yeartodate .
- 4:16So , what does all this mean for your trading strategy ?
- 4:20Given this environment of cautious optimism , a balanced approach is key .
- 4:25You want to capitalize on the strong trends while hedging against those macroeconomic risks .
- 4:31First , let's talk about capitalizing on the enduring Tech and AI growth , but with caution .
- 4:37Technology , especially AI , is still a major market driver .
- 4:42However , Nvidia's recent earnings reaction tells us that even the biggest names can face scrutiny , meaning selective investment is smarter than just throwing money at everything .
- 4:54For diversified exposure to the robust technology sector , consider the Invesco QQQ Trust , ticker QQQ , which tracks the Nasdaq100 , or the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , ticker XLK .
- 5:08If you prefer individual stocks , look for companies with strong AI integration and diverse revenue streams .
- 5:14Microsoft , ticker MSFT , continues to innovate across cloud with Azure and its AIpowered productivity tools , showing strong cash flow .
- 5:25Alphabet , ticker GOOGL , with its deep AI research and applications in search and cloud , is another key player .
- 5:33But always monitor those valuation multiples carefully .
- 5:37Second , consider Industrials for growth and economic resilience .
- 5:42This sector is getting a big boost from government infrastructure spending and a domestic manufacturing resurgence , further fueled by AI automation .
- 5:52It can offer both growth potential and some stability if global trade tensions shift focus to domestic opportunities .
- 6:00The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund , ticker XLI , gives broad exposure here .
- 6:07For a specific company , Caterpillar , ticker CAT , is a diversified industrial giant that directly benefits from infrastructure spending and manufacturing .
- 6:18Third , to hedge against a potential economic slowdown and persistent inflation , look to defensive sectors and fixed income .
- 6:26The weakening labor market , rising consumer inflation expectations , and dipping consumer confidence all suggest potential headwinds .
- 6:35For defensive equity , the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , ticker XLV , is generally less sensitive to economic cycles .
- 6:45The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund , ticker XLP , which covers companies making essential goods , is another solid defensive option .
- 6:55For fixed income , to add stability and income , the iShares Core U.S.
- 7:00Aggregate Bond ETF , ticker AGG , or the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF , ticker BND , are excellent for broad exposure to investmentgrade bonds .
- 7:13Given the persistent inflation and the potential for eventual rate cuts , you might favor shorttointermediate term bond ETFs like the Vanguard ShortTerm Bond ETF , ticker BSV , or the iShares 15 Year Laddered Treasury Bond ETF , ticker STIP , to minimize interest rate sensitivity .
- 7:32The 10year Treasury yield , currently at 4.224% , also offers a reasonable return for those seeking lower risk .
- 7:42Finally , and perhaps most importantly , monitor those macroeconomic indicators closely .
- 7:48The Federal Reserve's next moves are critical , and any definitive signals towards rate cuts could boost market sentiment , especially for growth stocks and financials .
- 7:58Conversely , worsening labor data or stubbornly high inflation could lead to continued hawkishness or a more significant economic slowdown .
- 8:09So , stay informed on upcoming inflation reports , like the August CPI due on September 11th , and the latest employment data .
- 8:17Be ready to adjust your portfolio allocations based on these releases .
- 8:22If inflation shows clear signs of sustained deceleration towards the Fed's target , increasing exposure to growthoriented assets might be warranted .
- 8:31If the labor market continues to deteriorate significantly , a more defensive posture could be prudent .
- 8:38That's all for today's Spy Trader .
- 8:40Keep it smart , keep it strategic , and I'll catch you next time !
