- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And laid their hands on the apostles
- 0:05Speaker 1: and put them in the common prison. Acts 5.18 Holy Spirit,
- 0:12Speaker 1: strengthen me as I stand in the face of persecution
- 0:15Speaker 1: and ridicule when I decide to reach out and offer
- 0:19Speaker 1: a hand to those in need. When I feel arrested
- 0:23Speaker 1: and imprisoned by the isolation of others, I will remember
- 0:27Speaker 1: your sweet Spirit. and I will remember the life of Jesus.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Like his disciples, he endured because the sacrifice was worth
- 0:38Speaker 1: the scars, the souls were worth the scrapes, and their
- 0:43Speaker 1: freedom was worth the fight. I will not give up
- 0:48Speaker 1: until your mission is fulfilled in my life, Lord. I
- 0:52Speaker 1: will remain relentless in my pursuit of your divine presence. Therefore,
- 0:59Speaker 1: with every fiber in my being, I say bring it on.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Because I am a water-walking, giant-slaying, lion-killing, serpent-crushing, Jericho-crumbling, wall-building, presence-filled,
- 1:14Speaker 1: anointed child of God. And I won't be stopped. In Jesus' name.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Thank you for making prayer a priority in your day.
- 1:29Speaker 1: To learn more about the Bible, stay tuned for today's story.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Arrested and beaten. In our last story, Ananias and Sapphira
- 1:51Speaker 3: were struck down for their false sense of holiness and charity.
- 1:55Speaker 3: They feigned generosity to look holy. and paid dearly for
- 1:59Speaker 3: their deception. Now we see the disciples following in the
- 2:03Speaker 3: suffering of Jesus. Imprisoned and beaten, they maintain a hopeful
- 2:07Speaker 3: joy that goes beyond comprehension. Inspired by the book of Acts.
- 2:15Speaker 2: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:17Speaker 2: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast

- 2:32Speaker 2: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:35Speaker 2: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:38Speaker 2: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:41Speaker 2: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:45Speaker 2: to get a copy of The Jesus Book, simply go
- 2:48Speaker 2: to jackgram.org slash Jesus. That's jackgram.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 2:56Speaker 2: you for your support. In our last episode, we heard
- 2:59Speaker 2: how God dealt severely with Ananias and Sapphira for their
- 3:03Speaker 2: greed and deception. He was showing the early church and
- 3:07Speaker 2: us that sin is a serious subject and it is
- 3:11Speaker 2: costly when God's children sin. Today, we'll hear how the
- 3:15Speaker 2: disciples continue to preach the risen Christ and the suffering
- 3:19Speaker 2: that begins as a result of proclaiming the gospel. Despite
- 3:24Speaker 2: the opposition and even imprisonment, These faithful servants remain joyful
- 3:29Speaker 2: in their suffering as they hope and trust in the Lord.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And we'll hear how God uses their circumstances to bring
- 3:35Speaker 2: the message of salvation to more and more people. Listen
- 3:40Speaker 2: to the Word of God now.
- 3:43Speaker 3: It was as cold as it was dark where the
- 3:45Speaker 3: disciples lay. The wet stone floors sucked the heat right
- 3:49Speaker 3: out of their bodies as they shivered in their prison cells.
- 3:53Speaker 3: The moonlight was barely peering out of cracks in the
- 3:56Speaker 3: cobbled walls. The high priest had arrested Peter and the
- 3:59Speaker 3: others and thrown them into prison out of fear. Their
- 4:03Speaker 3: movement was increasing at an unmanageable rate, and they felt
- 4:07Speaker 3: their power slipping through their fingers. John rested his head
- 4:12Speaker 3: against the stone wall and prayed with his brothers. Echoes
- 4:15Speaker 3: of their songs to God filled the depressing hallways. Their
- 4:19Speaker 3: prayers and songs were interrupted by the creaking sound of
- 4:22Speaker 3: the metal doors opening. Peter looked and saw that the
- 4:26Speaker 3: prison doors had been opened. Peter looked to his left
- 4:30Speaker 3: and to his right and saw a figure standing in
- 4:32Speaker 3: the shadows. He emerged from the darkness and was revealed
- 4:36Speaker 3: to be an angel of the Lord. Leave this place,
- 4:40Speaker 3: but do not run away, he said. The angel's voice
- 4:44Speaker 3: was deep and commanding. Go out and stand boldly in
- 4:48Speaker 3: the temple. Speak to people all the words of life.
- 4:52Speaker 3: So the disciples escaped the prison just as the sun
- 4:55Speaker 3: was rising. They stood up in the temple courtyards and
- 4:59Speaker 3: continued to preach the message of Jesus. The high priest
- 5:02Speaker 3: emerged from his quarters to see Peter in the middle
- 5:05Speaker 3: of the yard. Seize them, he yelled. And the temple
- 5:09Speaker 3: guards tackled the apostles to the ground. James and John
- 5:13Speaker 3: had their faces shoved into the dirt. This was not
- 5:17Speaker 3: what they had in mind when they thought about following Jesus,
- 5:20Speaker 3: but it was better, filled with more excitement and purpose.
- 5:25Speaker 3: We warned you not to teach his name, Caiaphas spat.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Peter thought about fighting, but then remembered the words of Jesus,
- 5:33Speaker 3: Those who live by the sword will die by the sword.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Peter drew a deep breath and calmly replied, We obey
- 5:40Speaker 3: God before men, priest. Caiaphas bubbled over in rage. and
- 5:45Speaker 3: had the guards strike Peter in the jaw. Andrew jolted forward,
- 5:49Speaker 3: but was met with a quick kick to the stomach.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Caiaphas leaned over to Andrew and said, I should kill you.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I should kill you all. Right before he was about
- 5:59Speaker 3: to give the word, a Pharisee by the name of
- 6:01Speaker 3: Gamaliel rose up. Stop, he shouted. We have had false
- 6:06Speaker 3: prophets rise up before these men, have we not? God
- 6:10Speaker 3: has a way of pruning those who do not speak
- 6:12Speaker 3: the truth. If these men are fools... Then we should
- 6:15Speaker 3: stay away from them. They will die eventually and their
- 6:18Speaker 3: movement will fade. But if these men speak the truth,
- 6:22Speaker 3: then it is us who are in danger if we
- 6:24Speaker 3: strike them down. Gamaliel was a voice of reason for
- 6:28Speaker 3: the Pharisees and was able to keep them from killing
- 6:30Speaker 3: Peter and the others, but not without a swift beating.
- 6:34Speaker 3: All the disciples were taken into the courtyard and beat
- 6:37Speaker 3: with clubs and whips. Then they were tossed by the
- 6:40Speaker 3: roadside to hobble home. The men lay on the ground,
- 6:43Speaker 3: sore and bleeding. But on each of their faces was
- 6:47Speaker 3: a smile. They were glad to suffer for the name
- 6:50Speaker 3: of Jesus. They were glad to suffer so that others
- 6:53Speaker 3: might thrive. It was their honor. So each day they
- 6:57Speaker 3: rose up again to go preach. And each day they
- 7:00Speaker 3: were either thrown in prison or beaten. This became the
- 7:04Speaker 3: rhythm of their life. No one had killed Christians at
- 7:08Speaker 3: this point until a man named Saul came.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Today's Bible passage begins inside a prison cell. Peter, John,
- 7:20Speaker 2: and the other apostles had not listened to the warnings
- 7:22Speaker 2: of the religious leaders, and they continued to preach Christ
- 7:25Speaker 2: and the gospel all over Jerusalem. The high priest and
- 7:29Speaker 2: the Sadducees were jealous of the influence these men were
- 7:33Speaker 2: having on all the people, so they had them arrested
- 7:36Speaker 2: and thrown into prison again. But God sent an angel
- 7:40Speaker 2: in the night to open the gates of their cell.
- 7:42Speaker 2: The angel told them to leave and go teach in
- 7:44Speaker 2: the temple court so that people might hear all the
- 7:47Speaker 2: words of life. This was the driving force, the passion
- 7:50Speaker 2: of these men now, to tell all who would hear
- 7:53Speaker 2: that Jesus is Lord and that he would make a
- 7:56Speaker 2: way to free everyone who trusted in him from their
- 7:59Speaker 2: sins and to save them forever. This was the mission
- 8:03Speaker 2: of Jesus, the mission that he had given them, and
- 8:06Speaker 2: now the disciples were carrying out this work and witness
- 8:09Speaker 2: of the gospel. The next morning, when the guard went
- 8:12Speaker 2: to get the men out of prison to bring them
- 8:14Speaker 2: before the council of the people of Israel, they found
- 8:17Speaker 2: only an empty cell. And when they heard the report
- 8:20Speaker 2: that the men were missing, everyone was perplexed. How could
- 8:24Speaker 2: they have escaped? Soon their questions were answered, because the
- 8:28Speaker 2: apostles had not run away. They were right in the temple,
- 8:32Speaker 2: courageously continuing to tell people about Jesus. So, They were
- 8:37Speaker 2: taken from there to the high priest and the council
- 8:39Speaker 2: of religious leaders and questioned, interrogated. These religious leaders reminded
- 8:44Speaker 2: the apostles that they had been strictly warned and told
- 8:47Speaker 2: to stop talking about Jesus and proclaiming this message. But
- 8:52Speaker 2: Peter reminded them once again that they were to obey
- 8:55Speaker 2: God and not men. So they laid out the gospel,
- 9:01Speaker 2: how Jesus had come from God and these very men
- 9:04Speaker 2: had crucified him, but he arose. conquering death to bring
- 9:08Speaker 2: grace and forgiveness to all who would believe in him.
- 9:11Speaker 2: What a change has taken place in these men's lives.
- 9:15Speaker 2: These men who had fled in fear when Jesus was
- 9:18Speaker 2: taken to the cross and hid in terror after his
- 9:21Speaker 2: death and burial are now standing without fear before the
- 9:24Speaker 2: same men who had sent Christ to his death. What
- 9:27Speaker 2: was the difference? The presence of Christ, the Holy Spirit,
- 9:33Speaker 2: the promised helper that Jesus had sent filled them with
- 9:36Speaker 2: the very power of God so that nothing any human
- 9:40Speaker 2: ruler could do to them would stop them from preaching
- 9:42Speaker 2: the good news. It is that same spirit to which
- 9:46Speaker 2: we now have available to us today in Christ. We
- 9:50Speaker 2: can be filled with the boldness and confidence to share
- 9:53Speaker 2: our faith in Christ with anyone and everyone and fulfill
- 9:56Speaker 2: the mission and commission of Jesus. Isn't that amazing? God
- 10:01Speaker 2: will use us to preach the gospel. The apostles' words
- 10:05Speaker 2: stirred up deep anger, even hatred among the council. They
- 10:09Speaker 2: wanted these men dead, but a lone voice of reason
- 10:12Speaker 2: stood up to speak. A man named Gamaliel reminded the
- 10:16Speaker 2: council of others who had come before and led movements,
- 10:19Speaker 2: and eventually these movements went away. But then Gamaliel spoke
- 10:23Speaker 2: these words in Acts 5, 38-39. So in the present case,
- 10:29Speaker 2: I can tell you, keep away from these men and
- 10:31Speaker 2: let them alone. For if this plan or this undertaking
- 10:35Speaker 2: is of man, it will fail. But if it is
- 10:38Speaker 2: of God, you will not be able to overthrow them.
- 10:41Speaker 2: You might even find yourself opposing God. Well, his words
- 10:47Speaker 2: were convincing, and the council took his advice. They had
- 10:51Speaker 2: no reason to hold or imprison these men, so they
- 10:54Speaker 2: released them. But first they beat them and threatened them
- 10:58Speaker 2: and warned them never to speak in the name of
- 11:01Speaker 2: Jesus again. Well, did this stop Peter and John and
- 11:04Speaker 2: the rest of the apostles and the work of the church?
- 11:08Speaker 2: Not at all. And rather than leave that place licking
- 11:11Speaker 2: their wounds and lamenting their persecution, they rejoiced that they
- 11:15Speaker 2: were counted worthy to suffer in the name of the
- 11:18Speaker 2: Lord Jesus. What the council meant for intimidation was actually
- 11:23Speaker 2: fuel for their fire. They went out every day teaching
- 11:26Speaker 2: in the name of Jesus, preaching and telling more and
- 11:28Speaker 2: more people what Christ could do for them if they
- 11:31Speaker 2: would put their faith in him. Soon, however, the patience
- 11:35Speaker 2: of the council would run out and a new enemy
- 11:38Speaker 2: of the gospel would emerge. a zealous young rabbi by
- 11:42Speaker 2: the name of Saul. We'll hear about him the next time.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Dear God, we thank you for today's reading, which reminds
- 11:49Speaker 2: us that you can do great things through us when
- 11:52Speaker 2: we are yielded and surrendered to you, when we tell
- 11:55Speaker 2: people about Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 11:58Speaker 2: We remember that witnessing is sharing Jesus in the power
- 12:01Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit and leaving the results to God.
- 12:05Speaker 2: So may we boldly witness. and tell our family and
- 12:08Speaker 2: friends and people that we meet of the love and
- 12:11Speaker 2: the grace of our Lord Jesus. No matter what kind
- 12:14Speaker 2: of opposition or resistance we face, may we be courageous
- 12:18Speaker 2: in sharing Christ. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for
- 12:23Speaker 2: listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast. And before
