Latest / DISGRACELAND / Bonus Episode: My Summer Listening, Reading, Watching Recs And More
Transcript
- 0:27Speaker 1: Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode, a little thing we
- 0:30Speaker 1: like to call the after party. This is the show
- 0:32Speaker 1: after the show, the party after the party, the bridge
- 0:35Speaker 1: to get you from one full episode of Disgraceland to
- 0:37Speaker 1: the other. The backyard, to dig into the dirt, our
- 0:40Speaker 1: mission to uncover the truth, to confront the myth, to
- 0:42Speaker 1: reclaim the story. On this bonus episode, I'm giving you
- 0:45Speaker 1: my summer recommendations music, movies, books, television, a celebrated summer,
- 0:50Speaker 1: so to speak. We are also catching up with our
- 0:52Speaker 1: recent episode on Dolly Parton, previewing next week's news story
- 0:56Speaker 1: on Slipknot, where you'll find out about a darkness that
- 0:58Speaker 1: was unfolding in the myth of the band's success, and
- 1:01Speaker 1: we get into your emails, comments, dms, and as always
- 1:04Speaker 1: a whole lot of rosie. This is the podcast for
- 1:06Speaker 1: the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers who know
- 1:09Speaker 1: that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:15Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling someone else. All right, discos,
- 1:17Speaker 1: let's get into it all right. The World Cup is over.
- 1:30Speaker 1: England broke my heart in many others as well, So
- 1:32Speaker 1: let's just move on, all right, okay, real quick, though,
- 1:35Speaker 1: England not being in the finals is more of a
- 1:37Speaker 1: loss for rock and roll than it was for England.
- 1:39Speaker 1: That's how I like to look at it. Anyhow, it
- 1:41Speaker 1: is summertime, discos, so I thought that I would do
- 1:44Speaker 1: a public service for you all in the after party
- 1:46Speaker 1: today and give you some of my summer recommendations. Books, records,
- 1:49Speaker 1: movie shows that I've been consuming, content that I have
- 1:52Speaker 1: consumed in the past. All of that appropriate summer fair
- 1:55Speaker 1: nothing too heavy. All right, we're gonna keep this stuff tight.
- 1:59Speaker 1: We're gonna keep this stuff light ish, I should say,
- 2:02Speaker 1: it's still disgraceland. See you get the point. There's gonna
- 2:05Speaker 1: be some darkness. This is the stuff that's meant though,
- 2:07Speaker 1: to be right on the beach, in a plane, at
- 2:10Speaker 1: the hotel, or at the airbnb wherever. First up Shindler's List. No,
- 2:16Speaker 1: I'm kidding. I'm tempted to recommend the film that I
- 2:19Speaker 1: watched last night, Bradley Cooper's Is This Thing On? Because
- 2:24Speaker 1: it is incredible Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Bradley Cooper's in it,
- 2:29Speaker 1: but it's mainly his film because he directed it. He's
- 2:31Speaker 1: got a small part in the movie. He's great, he
- 2:34Speaker 1: steals the show as always. But this movie's also a
- 2:37Speaker 1: tear fest, and that's not what we're doing today. We're
- 2:40Speaker 1: doing summer movies, okay, in summer music, and summer books
- 2:44Speaker 1: and summer TV series. So I'm gonna start with music,
- 2:50Speaker 1: because this is, after all, a music podcast, and so
- 2:54Speaker 1: may I direct your attention to the New Day Rising
- 2:57Speaker 1: album from Day Rih album from nineteen eighty five by
- 3:02Speaker 1: Minneapolis's Hoosker Do. This record is a great record, start
- 3:07Speaker 1: to finish, legit, no skips. But that's not why I'm
- 3:11Speaker 1: recommending it. I'm recommending it because ever since TV snack
- 3:15Speaker 1: Break made that Instagram meme of this album cover, the
- 3:21Speaker 1: New Day Rising album cover photoshopped with a still from Seinfeld,
- 3:26Speaker 1: the one where George George Costanza is lurking on the
- 3:31Speaker 1: beach behind his boss, mister Kroger's family and what was
- 3:35Speaker 1: presumably the Summer of George. I think that's what one
- 3:38Speaker 1: episode that was. I could be wrong and then put Costanza. Okay,
- 3:42Speaker 1: that's what the artist TV snack Break did. He put
- 3:44Speaker 1: Costanza in the iconic Hoosker Doo font with Kroger Day
- 3:49Speaker 1: Rising beneath it, obviously a spoof on Hohosker Doo's New
- 3:53Speaker 1: Day Rising. I have been blasting this album through the
- 3:57Speaker 1: speakers here in my studio for the last couple of weeks.
- 4:00Speaker 1: It's just incredible. I've loved this album since I was
- 4:02Speaker 1: fifteen years old. I've never gotten sick of it, and
- 4:05Speaker 1: specifically the song Celebrated Summer, which is just a perfect
- 4:11Speaker 1: pop song. It's one of those who skarodoo songs that
- 4:15Speaker 1: the punk rock purists hated, at least when I was
- 4:18Speaker 1: a kid. They hated it kids in my neighborhood who
- 4:20Speaker 1: were punks. It was just so catchy and it was poppy,
- 4:24Speaker 1: like I said, and dare I say, sentimental, But it's
- 4:28Speaker 1: the good kind of sentimental. It's kind of the only
- 4:31Speaker 1: kind of sentimental who skardoos Bob world does, meaning that
- 4:35Speaker 1: the sentimentality is arched up by a hidden layer of
- 4:40Speaker 1: melancholy and infinite sadness. Okay, go ask Billy Corgan about
- 4:44Speaker 1: these lyrics. Check them out. Listen. Love and Hate was
- 4:46Speaker 1: in the air like Paullen from a flower somewhere in
- 4:50Speaker 1: April time. They add another hour. I guess I'd better
- 4:53Speaker 1: think up a way to spend my time. Just when
- 4:55Speaker 1: I'm ready to sit inside. It's summertime. Should I go
- 4:58Speaker 1: swimming or get a friend to hang around? It's back
- 5:00Speaker 1: to summer, It's back to basics, hang around, getting drunk
- 5:03Speaker 1: on the beach or playing in a band. And getting
- 5:06Speaker 1: out of school meant getting out of hand? Was this
- 5:08Speaker 1: yours celebrated summer? Eat your heart out, Billy Corgan. I
- 5:12Speaker 1: don't mean to be giving Billy Corgan shit, even though
- 5:14Speaker 1: it sounds like I am. But I guess what I'm
- 5:15Speaker 1: saying is that without Bob Moold, you don't get Billy Corgan.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Despite all my rage, I'm still just a rat in
- 5:23Speaker 1: a cage. I don't know if that's good or bad, depends,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I guess on your feelings about Smashing Pumpkins. I like
- 5:28Speaker 1: Smashing Pumpkins. We've got a Smashing Pumpkins episode coming up
- 5:32Speaker 1: in a few weeks in the feed, and I don't
- 5:34Speaker 1: necessarily think it's gonna make Billy Corgan a fan of
- 5:36Speaker 1: disgrace Nound, which is a shame, because, like I said,
- 5:38Speaker 1: we're fans of his around here. Despite what Zeth wrote
- 5:40Speaker 1: in this episode. Anyway, That is my summer music recommendation
- 5:45Speaker 1: celebrated Summer of the song by Whoskerdoo off of Hohoskerdo's
- 5:49Speaker 1: New Day Rising. You can't go wrong with the entire album.
- 5:53Speaker 1: My summer book recommendation. I have two. Okay, the first
- 5:57Speaker 1: one I'm gonna give to the more you know, sophisticated.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Let's call them sophisticated. Listen, sophisticated readers. Excuse me because
- 6:07Speaker 1: the second one I'm going to give you is not
- 6:09Speaker 1: sophisticated at all. The first one I just read it
- 6:13Speaker 1: on vacation, Raymond Chandler's Farewell My Lovely Okay, it's incredible,
- 6:17Speaker 1: emblematic Raymond Chandler novel. If you've never read Raymond Chandler,
- 6:22Speaker 1: if you've never read a Chandler book with his iconic
- 6:24Speaker 1: Philip Marlow character, this is a great one to start with.
- 6:28Speaker 1: It's gumshoe noir. That's it's the blueprint for the detective novels. Okay,
- 6:35Speaker 1: it's fantastics. It's exactly what you'd expect. It's not going
- 6:38Speaker 1: to make you think too hard, but it might make
- 6:40Speaker 1: you drink a little more, which is a good enough
- 6:43Speaker 1: reason for me to call this an easy summer read,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but you know, it's kind of sophisticated. Okay, it's Raymond Chandler,
- 6:48Speaker 1: all right, but it's not as easy and it's not
- 6:52Speaker 1: as light as my next recommendation. It's gonna sound weird
- 6:56Speaker 1: to you. I also read this one on vacation. It's
- 6:58Speaker 1: Wise Guy by Nicholas Pelegie. Now, I was flying to
- 7:02Speaker 1: Europe on Lothunza Airlines, if I'm saying that correctly, Lothunsa,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and I was like, Hey, wouldn't it be cool to
- 7:09Speaker 1: read about the Lothunza heist on the flight? And that's
- 7:13Speaker 1: why I finally grabbed Wise Guy off my shelf, which
- 7:16Speaker 1: I've owned for some time but never read. And of course,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Wise Guy by Nicholas Pelegie is the book that they
- 7:22Speaker 1: based Goodfellows on, and I thought it was going to
- 7:26Speaker 1: be I don't really know what I thought, but I
- 7:28Speaker 1: got something a little different than what I was expecting.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I guess what I was expecting was a lot of
- 7:38Speaker 1: sort of vagueness in the storytelling, the kind of kernels
- 7:42Speaker 1: of what the stories became in the film. But god man,
- 7:46Speaker 1: some of the storytelling is verbatim from this book in
- 7:49Speaker 1: the language as well, and it's really great to see
- 7:54Speaker 1: how much of Henry Hill's voice, his storytelling voice, I
- 7:58Speaker 1: should say it up in the movie. Fantastic stuff and
- 8:04Speaker 1: just if you want like revelatory facts and crimes that
- 8:09Speaker 1: were committed that didn't make it in the movie. The
- 8:11Speaker 1: book is fantastic as well. There is one great anecdot
- 8:13Speaker 1: where they're talking about how they were just such thieves,
- 8:16Speaker 1: such scammers, and they had a guy. They had an
- 8:21Speaker 1: inn at a grocery store. I believe it was somewhere
- 8:23Speaker 1: in Queens or somewhere. No, it was somewhere in this
- 8:26Speaker 1: in like more of a suburban area of New York.
- 8:29Speaker 1: And this this guy who worked at the grocery store
- 8:32Speaker 1: brought in a construction company to build an eleventh aisle. Right,
- 8:37Speaker 1: you know, you have different aisles in the in the
- 8:38Speaker 1: grocery store, you know, I mean checkout aisle. You have
- 8:42Speaker 1: different lanes you can check out in. There were ten
- 8:45Speaker 1: of them. He had an eleventh built with another eleventh
- 8:48Speaker 1: cash register, and it was open. It was running for
- 8:51Speaker 1: like a year. In every dollar that that checkout lane
- 8:57Speaker 1: collected was stolen. It was pure profit for these gangsters.
- 9:03Speaker 1: They didn't catch up to the scam until this guy
- 9:06Speaker 1: went on like his summer vacation or something, and he
- 9:09Speaker 1: took some time off, and somebody else came in and
- 9:11Speaker 1: was like, Hey, what the fuck, We're not supposed to
- 9:13Speaker 1: have eleven checkout lanes and eleven cat registers. I thought
- 9:17Speaker 1: that was fascinating. There's a bunch of stuff like that
- 9:19Speaker 1: in the book. And that book is Wise Guy by
- 9:21Speaker 1: Nicholas Poleggi. He also co wrote the script with Scorsese.
- 9:24Speaker 1: You're gonna love it, all right, my movie Wreck, I
- 9:27Speaker 1: already kind of gave you the Bradley Cooper thing. Is
- 9:30Speaker 1: this thing on as a wreck, kind of sneaky wreck.
- 9:33Speaker 1: But it's not a feel good hit of the summer
- 9:35Speaker 1: as Faith No War, as Mike Patten would say. It's
- 9:38Speaker 1: so I gotta recommend something else. Okay, I'm currently also
- 9:41Speaker 1: watching Gomora, which is way too dark, so I can't
- 9:44Speaker 1: recommend that. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna
- 9:46Speaker 1: recommend Spike Lee's Clockers. And it's not feel good, so
- 9:51Speaker 1: to speak, but it does have a hot and sticky
- 9:54Speaker 1: summer vibe. And Zeth and I referenced a shit ton
- 9:57Speaker 1: in our new this film should be played loud episode
- 9:59Speaker 1: on Do the Right Thing, which is the ultimate summer
- 10:02Speaker 1: movie Do the Right Thing. So if you want to
- 10:04Speaker 1: frame a reference, then you can do no wrong by
- 10:06Speaker 1: watching Spike Lee's Clockers and by reading the novel by
- 10:09Speaker 1: Richard Price as well. It's because it's fantastic, though I
- 10:12Speaker 1: wouldn't call that a summer read, but it's also fantastic.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It's just great, all right. Summer TV series recommendation. Okay,
- 10:21Speaker 1: this one is big, it's scary, it's popcorny as hell,
- 10:27Speaker 1: so those things make it summary. But it's also super dark,
- 10:30Speaker 1: but not dark enough to take it off my list.
- 10:33Speaker 1: And that is the Cape Fear series, the remake of
- 10:37Speaker 1: the classic De Niro. Mitchim films the series on Apple
- 10:42Speaker 1: TV with Javey R. Bardem Is and Amy adams Is.
- 10:45Speaker 1: It's it's amazing. It's so good. It's the definition of
- 10:49Speaker 1: a great remake. For a million reasons. I don't want
- 10:51Speaker 1: to go into it here. Zeth can't stand this, he
- 10:54Speaker 1: hates it. I love it, and I'm thinking that maybe
- 10:56Speaker 1: Zeth and I should come on and debate this series.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I think that might be fun. It wraps in a
- 11:02Speaker 1: week or so, so it's available for all of you
- 11:05Speaker 1: to Binge right now on Apple TV. I cannot say
- 11:07Speaker 1: enough about this weird, fucked up thing, this remake, this series,
- 11:12Speaker 1: And I bet a bunch of you are already watching this,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and I want to hear what you have to say
- 11:15Speaker 1: about it. And I also think maybe a bunch of you,
- 11:19Speaker 1: like Zez, started it and just couldn't get into it.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And I want to hear why you don't like it. It's
- 11:24Speaker 1: it's just I love it. They even lose the air
- 11:26Speaker 1: conditioning in an episode, which is quintessential summer viewing. So
- 11:29Speaker 1: those are my res music New Day Rising with celebrated
- 11:33Speaker 1: Summer by Whoscardo Books, Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely, and
- 11:37Speaker 1: Nicholas Polegi's wise Guy movie, Clockers TV series, the New
- 11:43Speaker 1: Cape Fear remake. Listen, read, watch Binge and get back
- 11:47Speaker 1: to me at six one, seven nine oh six six
- 11:50Speaker 1: sixty three eight And let me know what you think
- 11:52Speaker 1: about these RECs. Do you love them? Do you hate them?
- 11:53Speaker 1: Are they summary? Are they not? Most important? I want
- 11:56Speaker 1: to know what you guys are recommending, What are you reading?
- 11:59Speaker 1: I'm up to New England. I'm gonna go sit on
- 12:02Speaker 1: a main beach a couple of days. I want to
- 12:05Speaker 1: you know, I need the res just as bad as
- 12:07Speaker 1: you do. Okay, so don't bogart the Rex is what
- 12:10Speaker 1: I'm saying. What are you listening to this summer?
- 12:11Speaker 2: What are you reading?
- 12:12Speaker 1: What are you watching? What are you binging? Hit me

- 13:05Speaker 1: episode is for you. That's in the rewind slot coming

- 13:26Speaker 1: sixty sixty three eight and I love this question. Let
- 13:28Speaker 1: us know what's the song that pushed you? Okay, what
- 13:33Speaker 1: lyrics pushed you to actually do something, to quit a job,
- 13:38Speaker 1: to start a band, to take a risk, to get
- 13:40Speaker 1: a shit together, to get a shit untogether. Let us know.
- 13:44Speaker 1: We all have those moments in life. We've all had them.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Where we're sitting there, lying in the field somewhere near
- 13:50Speaker 1: Walden Pond. We somehow managed to park our vespa in
- 13:54Speaker 1: the woods. Don't quite know how. Still to this day
- 13:56Speaker 1: we're lying there. Ticks are probably crawling all over us,
- 13:59Speaker 1: and we're thinking, you know what, I'm gonna get my
- 14:01Speaker 1: shit together and start a podcast. I'm just saying, we
- 14:05Speaker 1: all remember what song was playing when we came to
- 14:07Speaker 1: those realizations. Let us know six one seven, nine oh six,

- 14:55Speaker 1: grab bag of responses for y'all here, little round robin,
- 14:58Speaker 1: on any subject you want to talk talk about. All right,
- 15:01Speaker 1: let's go to this message from the five O three.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Jake, This is Johnny Magnifico from the five O three Man.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I hope I'm not late to the game. On the
- 15:10Speaker 2: best husband and wife bands. How could we forget the grittiest, grimiest,
- 15:17Speaker 2: true diy rock and roll band, Dead Moon from Portland, Oregon.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Fred and Trudy Cole married in nineteen sixty seven. Fred's
- 15:28Speaker 2: story alone is insane.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I mean, he.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Played with like soul acts in the nineteen sixties that
- 15:35Speaker 2: he opened up for Stevie Wonder under the name Deep
- 15:38Speaker 2: so Coal, was in the Weeds and the Lollipop Shop
- 15:42Speaker 2: that opened up for Janis Joplin and so many other
- 15:45Speaker 2: bands back in the day, and then dodging the Giraffe.
- 15:47Speaker 2: He his band broke down in Portland, Oregon, where he
- 15:51Speaker 2: met Tuty. They married in nineteen sixty seven. He was
- 15:54Speaker 2: in a million bands Zipper throughout the seventies. Eventually, fed
- 15:59Speaker 2: up up with flaky musicians, he got his wife to
- 16:02Speaker 2: play bass and they started a band throughout the eighties
- 16:06Speaker 2: called The Rats, which featured Sam Henry from the Wipers,
- 16:10Speaker 2: another great Portland band. Eventually they turned into Dead Moon
- 16:16Speaker 2: that played for years and years. I think they even
- 16:18Speaker 2: turned down touring with Nirvana because they already had a
- 16:22Speaker 2: prior engagement with anothern band they were supposed tour with.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Tody bought Fred the actual cutting vinyl cutting machine that
- 16:33Speaker 2: cut the infamous Louis Louis Steven Inch from the Kingsmen,
- 16:38Speaker 2: who were also from Portland, and they would record themselves
- 16:43Speaker 2: and actually cut their own vinyl records on this machine.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Their stories insane, and eventually started a band called Pierced
- 16:51Speaker 2: Arrows that's also just gritty and raw and amazing. Until
- 16:58Speaker 2: Fred died and she's now playing kind of keeping the
- 17:03Speaker 2: Dead Moon thing alive. So she's out on the road
- 17:05Speaker 2: touring right now. But yes, Fred and Judy Cole, they're
- 17:08Speaker 2: amazing dead Moon. Check them out.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Holy shit, Johnny Magnifico, thank you so much. I know
- 17:13Speaker 1: nothing about this. I know so little about Dead Moon
- 17:18Speaker 1: Fred and Judy Cole that I'm almost questioning whether or
- 17:22Speaker 1: not you're making this whole thing up to fuck with me.
- 17:25Speaker 1: But I don't think you are. And if you are, congratulations,
- 17:27Speaker 1: because you know, working in the Wipers and the whole
- 17:30Speaker 1: you know what I mean, the Louis Louis machine that
- 17:35Speaker 1: cut the seven and she's pretty good. If you're making
- 17:38Speaker 1: it up, kudos, my friend. But I don't think you're
- 17:41Speaker 1: making it up. And I don't know anything about this,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and I am I know what I'm listening to on
- 17:45Speaker 1: my ride to the barbershop later today. So thanks so much.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'm going to dig into this. Fred and Judy, you
- 17:50Speaker 1: got a fan here in Johnny Magnifico Disco's. Let's all
- 17:53Speaker 1: check out Dead Moon and let Johnny know what we think.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Awesome stuff, man, Thank you. All right, let's go to
- 18:00Speaker 1: the nine seven eight Jake rock a rolla man Helltown.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Mark here two things. I'm less than one year behind
- 18:09Speaker 1: on the playlist and it's freaking huge. Also an idea
- 18:13Speaker 1: you Fortunately, nothing More has given you some material to
- 18:16Speaker 1: work with, specifically regarding sexual allegations towards their tech and
- 18:21Speaker 1: the band management covering up wicked bummer for a great band.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And then thanks, I appreciate the rest of your message here.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I will let you know Mark, thank you. I don't
- 18:31Speaker 1: know much about nothing More. I'll check this out, appreciate
- 18:34Speaker 1: the tip on. As for the playlist, guys that Mark
- 18:38Speaker 1: is alluding to. Mark has gone through and he's made
- 18:41Speaker 1: this giant playlist of every song referenced in all two
- 18:46Speaker 1: hundred and sixty whatever episodes of Disgraceland. It's mammoth. If
- 18:51Speaker 1: you want to be in on that, you got to
- 18:52Speaker 1: be well, you can get it. I think it's on Spotify,
- 18:55Speaker 1: but Mark's in the Patreon chat all the time we've
- 18:57Speaker 1: posted in there. He keeps us updated on his prom
- 19:00Speaker 1: progress and Patreon as well. Susie hits us up from
- 19:03Speaker 1: the three four to six. Hey there, I wanted to
- 19:05Speaker 1: make a suggestion for a new topic. You might not
- 19:07Speaker 1: have thought about. Juan Gabrielle al Divo de Juarez. He
- 19:11Speaker 1: literally had the voice that granted him life, literally in
- 19:15Speaker 1: a time where being feminine, slash flamboyant and gay was unthinkable.
- 19:20Speaker 1: There's a story of him getting into trouble with cartels
- 19:22Speaker 1: and local law enforcement. I can't wait for your take,
- 19:26Speaker 1: loveoll Susie. Susie, fantastic recommendation. Juan Gabrielle al Divo de
- 19:32Speaker 1: Juarez is going on the list. Appreciate you. Nine one
- 19:38Speaker 1: seven writes in Adele. Where's the Fiona Apple episode? Look
- 19:42Speaker 1: up Kanye West obsession with her before her first album
- 19:45Speaker 1: came out. Yo, I just read nine one seven. I
- 19:49Speaker 1: just read talk about summer reads. I should have recommended this.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I'm recommending this. I read this on vacation too. The
- 19:55Speaker 1: third book I read on vacation. I can't believe I
- 19:57Speaker 1: didn't fucking recommend this one. I think I mentioned to
- 20:00Speaker 1: you guys a couple of weeks ago, Jonathan Ames. Wake up, sir, hysterical,
- 20:04Speaker 1: Jonathan Ames. I did mention this because I talked about
- 20:06Speaker 1: Board to Death with Jason Schwartzman and Ted Danson. Great
- 20:10Speaker 1: summer read if you're looking for one. Anyways, I'm like,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I don't know much about this. Jonathan names guy and
- 20:15Speaker 1: I started looking him up. He used to date, or
- 20:17Speaker 1: maybe he still does date, Fiona Apple, which is just incredible, amazing.
- 20:22Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Nine one seven. I don't know where the Fiona Apple
- 20:24Speaker 1: episode is. It was on the list, it's still on
- 20:26Speaker 1: the list. I just don't know a good way into
- 20:29Speaker 1: her story, you know. I kind of want to write
- 20:31Speaker 1: it as like it's like a one act where she's
- 20:33Speaker 1: trapped in a room for all night with Paul Thomas
- 20:36Speaker 1: Anderson and Quentin Tarantino and Amanda Cocaine, and she she
- 20:39Speaker 1: somehow survives that fucking atrocity. But I just I don't
- 20:44Speaker 1: have a good angle on Fiona Apple yet, you know, Adele,
- 20:50Speaker 1: To answer your question, nine one seven, it's a huge
- 20:52Speaker 1: true true crime. A fan and a huge fan of
- 20:55Speaker 1: true crime of crime movies. Excuse me, so that was
- 20:57Speaker 1: our in there three oh three rights saying hey, I'm
- 21:00Speaker 1: surprised you didn't know about the wax and the Philippines.
- 21:02Speaker 1: But more importantly, yes, Cheap Trick is from Rockford, Illinois.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Just like adult star ginger Linn, I can tie almost
- 21:10Speaker 1: anything back to porn stars and playmates from the three
- 21:15Speaker 1: to three and Cheap Trick apparently three O three. Now
- 21:18Speaker 1: I did not know about the wax and the Philippines,
- 21:20Speaker 1: Now I do? I love it? Eight six o rights
- 21:22Speaker 1: in hey, Jake trip from the eight to six to
- 21:24Speaker 1: oh the New Marson episode is, in a word great.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I've been a doors freak for forty years. There was
- 21:29Speaker 1: stuff in it that I had no clue about. I
- 21:31Speaker 1: was under the assumption in the gym, and Pan didn't
- 21:34Speaker 1: meet the count until the end of the band, not
- 21:36Speaker 1: the beginning of it. The whole UCLA connection was wild,
- 21:39Speaker 1: and at the end of the day Jim died due
- 21:40Speaker 1: to general self abuse with the booze and drugs, and
- 21:43Speaker 1: it's possible did hed on something. Thanks Jake. This episode
- 21:47Speaker 1: was in the top five best Disgraceland episodes hands down.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I really appreciate that. Eighty six. Oh, I appreciate that.
- 21:53Speaker 1: From a heavy doors head like yourself. This story kicked
- 21:58Speaker 1: up a bunch of controversy off a lot of people.
- 22:01Speaker 1: So many people want to hang on to their theories
- 22:03Speaker 1: about how these folks died, especially Jim Morrison. So many
- 22:06Speaker 1: people want to want to point to the more conspiracy
- 22:10Speaker 1: oriented takes on his death. So many people want to
- 22:14Speaker 1: believe that that, you know, something else happened, like he
- 22:18Speaker 1: just you know, he disappeared or you know, his body
- 22:20Speaker 1: it was brought back from the club. And and I've
- 22:23Speaker 1: already told you what I think, and I stand by
- 22:26Speaker 1: my research. You can check all our sources. You can
- 22:29Speaker 1: read the same stuff I read. It's all on our website.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Go to the Jim Morrison page on disgracelinepod dot com.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Five one oh hey, Jake Greg Alman's autobiography is rad
- 22:40Speaker 1: I can only imagine going an Alman Brothers episode coming
- 22:43Speaker 1: up soon, very soon. Six one seven nine oh six
- 22:47Speaker 1: six six three eight. You guys want to hit me,
- 22:49Speaker 1: talk about whatever you want to talk about, I'm here
- 22:51Speaker 1: for it. Take a quick break back after this with
- 22:54Speaker 1: more of me and more of you. All right, guys,
- 23:08Speaker 1: we are back when I hit an email here from
- 23:10Speaker 1: listener Kendon Smith, subject average White Band. Now. I'm choosing
- 23:15Speaker 1: this because not only is this a thoughtful email, but
- 23:18Speaker 1: Zeth and I were just talking. I can't remember if
- 23:21Speaker 1: it was in the after party or if it was
- 23:23Speaker 1: in the wrap party about his hatred of average white band,
- 23:27Speaker 1: and I get to say, I'm feeling like there's an
- 23:30Speaker 1: average White Band episode coming thanks to mister Kenden Smith
- 23:34Speaker 1: and Zeth. Don't worry, I won't make you write it.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Here comes the average White band message. Okay, I just
- 23:41Speaker 1: listened to your Jim Morrison death episode and it all
- 23:44Speaker 1: sounds very plausible. The tale of mistaking horse for snow
- 23:48Speaker 1: that's heroin for cocaine reminds me of the sad tale
- 23:51Speaker 1: of the average White Band who were then riding high
- 23:53Speaker 1: on the novelty of being a great funk band from Scotland,
- 23:57Speaker 1: only to almost lose it all in disgraceful The tale
- 24:01Speaker 1: of Robbie McIntosh seems like a story perfect for an episode. Anyway.
- 24:04Speaker 1: A little while back, you're asking people about artists who
- 24:07Speaker 1: took an experimental left turn, and I wanted to submit
- 24:09Speaker 1: sound effects by the jam Before this much of their
- 24:12Speaker 1: output didn't stray far from the jangly retropop mod nods
- 24:16Speaker 1: to the Kinks, the Small Faces and the Who sound effects.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Was their departure with angular new wave, perhaps inspired by
- 24:23Speaker 1: XTC Gang of Four and perhaps the success of the
- 24:26Speaker 1: Police with lots of dub influenced studio experimentation that leaned
- 24:30Speaker 1: into art school way more than the reputation previously suggested.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I loved the one Yo Williams episode. I wanted to
- 24:36Speaker 1: go back in time, knock the gun away and tell
- 24:38Speaker 1: her that the twenty first century needs her. But I digress.
- 24:41Speaker 1: My rock and roll time machine will be working overtime
- 24:43Speaker 1: to try to get to Otis Redding before we stepped
- 24:45Speaker 1: on that plane and walking me as about a home
- 24:47Speaker 1: on that night. It's late as I type, and I
- 24:50Speaker 1: got work to do, so Jake Zeth and company, you
- 24:53Speaker 1: have all my love for what you do. That's from
- 24:55Speaker 1: Kenden Smith. Kenden, thank you so much. And I read
- 24:58Speaker 1: this because of the average White band reference. Thank you
- 25:01Speaker 1: don't know much about them. Perhaps yes there is an
- 25:04Speaker 1: episode I was joking earlier, but perhaps there may be.
- 25:07Speaker 1: But I also I really like this thing about the
- 25:09Speaker 1: jam Paul Weller and sound effects. I had no idea
- 25:13Speaker 1: about this album and it's plausible. The whole XTC Gang
- 25:17Speaker 1: of four influence. I love it. Thanks Kendon, appreciate you guys.
