Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to Clone Wars: The Spinoff.
- 0:03It's DJ Universe, and this is a special episode because the Clone Wars lineup is
- 0:07changing again.
- 0:09I've got Dangerous Zygos with me.
- 0:11You already know what time it is.
- 0:12Calvin Blingwell is in the building.
- 0:14Always.
- 0:15And before we introduce the man sitting in that fourth chair today,
- 0:19we need to address the change.
- 0:21Lil Bennington is no longer with Down By Law Management, and because of that,
- 0:27he's also no longer occupying the fourth host position on Clone Wars.
- 0:32We're not going to turn somebody's departure into gossip.
- 0:35We're not going to speculate.
- 0:38We're not going to manufacture controversy for clicks.
- 0:41Sometimes business relationships change.
- 0:45Sometimes rosters change.
- 0:47Sometimes the next chapter requires a different lineup.
- 0:51What matters is how you move forward.
- 0:53And that's part of business too.
- 0:55People hear us talk about ownership, contracts, infrastructure and professionalism
- 1:00all the time.
- 1:01Well, transitions are part of infrastructure.
- 1:03The mission has to be bigger than any one person.
- 1:06Exactly.
- 1:07A real organization has to survive change.
- 1:10Artists change.
- 1:11Teams change.
- 1:12Markets change.
- 1:13Technology changes.
- 1:15But if the foundation is strong, the mission keeps moving.
- 1:18And our mission hasn't changed.
- 1:21Knowledge of self.
- 1:22Ownership.
- 1:23Financial literacy.
- 1:25Artist development.
- 1:27Hip-hop culture.
- 1:29Generational wealth.
- 1:30Building careers that can survive beyond one record, one viral moment or one
- 1:35platform.
- 1:37So today, we're introducing the artist who will be stepping into that fourth chair.
- 1:43The newest member of the Down By Law Management roster.
- 1:46The newest member of the Hip-Hop Hero League.
- 1:49And the new fourth host of the weekly Clone Wars podcast.
- 1:53Greedy Boi.
- 1:54Welcome to Clone Wars.
- 1:56I appreciate it.
- 1:58I'm coming into this ready to work.
- 2:00I'm an artist first, but I understand that there's a lot more to building a career
- 2:04than making records.
- 2:06I'm here to bring my perspective, learn from everybody at this table,
- 2:10and add something to what Clone Wars is building.
- 2:13That's what the fourth chair requires.
- 2:15You're not here as a guest.
- 2:17You're not here for one episode and then disappearing.
- 2:21Starting now, when people hear Clone Wars, they're hearing DJ Universe,
- 2:26Dangerous Zygos, Calvin Blingwell and Greedy Boi.
- 2:31That's the lineup.
- 2:32New soldier.
- 2:33Same war.
- 2:34And the war is against bad business.
- 2:36Bad contracts.
- 2:37Bad accounting.
- 2:38Bad planning.
- 2:39And artists not knowing what they own.
- 2:41See?
- 2:41He's already catching on.
- 2:43Greedy, people are hearing you on Clone Wars for the first time.
- 2:47So I don't want the corporate biography.
- 2:49Tell the audience what Greedy Boi represents.
- 2:52Greedy Boi represents hunger.
- 2:54And when I say hunger, I'm not just talking about wanting money.
- 2:58I'm talking about wanting more out of yourself.
- 3:01More growth.
- 3:02More knowledge.
- 3:03More creativity.
- 3:04More opportunities.
- 3:05More ownership.
- 3:06I've got music already out there, but I'm looking at this as another stage of
- 3:10building.
- 3:11I like that distinction.
- 3:12Because the word greedy usually gets interpreted negatively.
- 3:15But hunger can mean refusing to become comfortable.
- 3:18Exactly.
- 3:19You can be hungry for knowledge.
- 3:21Hungry to improve.
- 3:22Hungry to take care of your family.
- 3:25Hungry to turn something you're passionate about into something sustainable.
- 3:29That's where I'm coming from.
- 3:31Then we're going to make you earn that name on this show.
- 3:35Because if you're greedy for knowledge, we're going to give you plenty to study.
- 3:39Let's do it.
- 3:40And this is exactly why the Hip-Hop Hero League exists.
- 3:43It isn't enough for us to say, "Here's another artist."
- 3:46We're trying to develop artists who understand both sides of this industry.
- 3:50The microphone and the paperwork.
- 3:52The studio and the spreadsheet.
- 3:54The creativity and the commerce.
- 3:56The record and the rights.
- 3:58Because plenty of talented people have made great music and still ended up with
- 4:02nothing.
- 4:03Talent doesn't automatically create ownership.
- 4:06And income doesn't automatically create wealth.
- 4:09That's one of the biggest lessons we keep coming back to.
- 4:12You could make a hundred thousand dollars and spend a hundred and ten thousand.
- 4:15You had income.
- 4:16You didn't build wealth.
- 4:18And that's something I want to learn more about.
- 4:20Not just getting paid, but understanding what happens after you get paid.
- 4:25How do you build from it?
- 4:27That's the right question.
- 4:28Because this new management relationship isn't about Down By Law owning Greedy Boi.
- 4:33That's important.
- 4:35Management and ownership are not the same thing.
- 4:38The objective is to put infrastructure around the artist.
- 4:41Career development.
- 4:43Release strategy.
- 4:45Brand development.
- 4:46Collaborations.
- 4:47Licensing.
- 4:49Marketing.
- 4:50Merchandise.
- 4:51Audience development.
- 4:52Business opportunities.
- 4:55Then the artist has to do the work.
- 4:57And that last sentence is important.
- 4:58Management cannot want your career more than you do.
- 5:01Management can create organization.
- 5:04Management can provide strategy.
- 5:06Management can make introductions.
- 5:08But nobody can manufacture your work ethic for you.
- 5:11That's on me.
- 5:12Exactly.
- 5:13Welcome to the League.
- 5:14Now earn the jersey.
- 5:16Let's talk about the elephant in the room.
- 5:18Somebody listening is probably thinking, "Didn't Clone Wars just introduce another
- 5:22fourth host?"
- 5:23Yes.
- 5:25We did.
- 5:26And now circumstances have changed.
- 5:28That's business.
- 5:30And there's actually a lesson for independent artists inside that.
- 5:33Don't build an entire operation where changing one person destroys the operation.
- 5:38That's called key-person dependency.
- 5:41It happens in businesses all the time.
- 5:43One person has all the passwords.
- 5:45One person understands the finances.
- 5:47One person knows where the files are.
- 5:48One person controls the audience.
- 5:50Then that person leaves and everybody starts panicking.
- 5:54Which is why Clone Wars isn't one individual.
- 5:57It's an ecosystem.
- 5:58The personalities matter.
- 6:00The chemistry matters.
- 6:01But the mission has to survive roster changes.
- 6:04That's what we're doing today.
- 6:06We're not pretending the previous chapter didn't happen.
- 6:09We're simply turning the page.
- 6:11And from my side, I'm not coming here trying to imitate the person who had the seat
- 6:15before me.
- 6:16I've got to bring myself to it.
- 6:17That's exactly what you should do.
- 6:19Because the worst thing you could do is become a replacement character.
- 6:21You're not Lil Bennington 2.0.
- 6:23You're Greedy Boi one point O.
- 6:25Maybe update to 1 point 1 after the first episode.
- 6:29Give me a week.
- 6:30That's what I want.
- 6:31Different perspective.
- 6:32Different life experience.
- 6:34Different artistic identity.
- 6:36Same commitment to the mission.
- 6:38And here's something else artists need to understand.
- 6:41A professional transition doesn't require a public war.
- 6:45Every separation doesn't need a diss record.
- 6:47Every business change doesn't need twenty Instagram Lives.
- 6:51Sometimes you acknowledge that something changed, handle the necessary business,
- 6:56protect everybody's rights, and keep building.
- 6:59That right there is maturity.
- 7:01Hip-hop is competitive.
- 7:02That's part of the culture.
- 7:03But business requires discipline.
- 7:05And knowledge of self plays into that.
- 7:08If your entire identity depends on who's standing beside you,
- 7:12you haven't fully established your foundation.
- 7:15Know yourself.
- 7:16Know your role.
- 7:17Know your mission.
- 7:19Then when circumstances change, you can adapt without losing yourself.
- 7:23That's something I can relate to.
- 7:25I don't want this opportunity to define me.
- 7:27I want what I do with the opportunity to define me.
- 7:30That's a bar.
- 7:31Because opportunities disappear.
- 7:33Skills stay.
- 7:34Knowledge stays.
- 7:35Relationships can stay.
- 7:37Assets can stay.
- 7:39And intellectual property can keep producing value long after the original moment is
- 7:43gone.
- 7:44That's why we keep saying it.
- 7:45Legacy over hype.
- 7:47Now we get to the official part.
- 7:49Greedy Boi, you're stepping into two positions today.
- 7:53First, you're joining the Down By Law Management roster.
- 7:56Second, you're entering the Hip-Hop Hero League.
- 8:00And the League comes with responsibilities.
- 8:02I'm listening.
- 8:03Number one.
- 8:04Know what you create.
- 8:05Number two.
- 8:06Know what you own.
- 8:07Number three.
- 8:08Know where your money comes from and where it goes.
- 8:10Number four.
- 8:11Protect your name and your reputation like they're assets, because they are.
- 8:15Number five.
- 8:16Don't let clout convince you that attention and leverage are the same thing.
- 8:20And number six.
- 8:21Think longer than the next release.
- 8:23That's the part I really want to build on.
- 8:25Long-term thinking.
- 8:26Then let's start right now.
- 8:27Imagine it's 2036.
- 8:29Ten years.
- 8:30What do you want Greedy Boi to represent?
- 8:32Growth.
- 8:33Somebody who took what he had and kept building.
- 8:35I want the music to grow.
- 8:37I want the business to grow.
- 8:39I want the audience to grow.
- 8:40And I want to be in a position where what I built can help
