- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from Newstalk SEDB. Follow this
- 0:13Speaker 1: and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I have good news and bad news for you this morning.
- 0:19Speaker 2: The good news, I was out shopping on the weekend,
- 0:21Speaker 2: which means I didn't actually buy anything, but drove halfway
- 0:24Speaker 2: Acrosstown looking for a BedHead, couldn't find it, and then
- 0:26Speaker 2: went home empty handed. But the good news is the
- 0:29Speaker 2: shops that I visited were full of people spending money.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Hardware store full, furniture store less full, but still busy.
- 0:36Speaker 2: The Devil wears Prata on Saturday night, I can tell you.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I can report was one hundred percent booked out for
- 0:42Speaker 2: all of the sessions, and they were running almost on
- 0:44Speaker 2: the hour, so that is a good thing. I've never
- 0:46Speaker 2: really rated Anne Hathaway's acting Chops, but literally thousands of
- 0:50Speaker 2: middle aged women Glass of savvyb in hand clearly did
- 0:53Speaker 2: a survey at today says retailers are worried about the
- 0:56Speaker 2: fuel shock, but I didn't see much reason to be
- 0:58Speaker 2: freaking out over the weekend. Now the bad news. All
- 1:01Speaker 2: the stuff we buy in this country comes by sea,
- 1:04Speaker 2: all the trinkets, all the furniture, the nonperishables come over
- 1:07Speaker 2: the ocean. Because we're a you know, an Ireland. More
- 1:10Speaker 2: than eighty percent of our trade is done on a
- 1:11Speaker 2: ship by value and weight. Half of that trade imports
- 1:15Speaker 2: and exports, almost half done by the shipping giant MRSK.
- 1:20Speaker 2: And a little reported note to customers Friday, MRSK is
- 1:24Speaker 2: slapping an almost thirty percent fuel surcharge onto inland transport.
- 1:29Speaker 2: The fuel bill for imports is increasing twenty seven percent,
- 1:34Speaker 2: the Aussies is going up eighteen percent. This cost gets
- 1:37Speaker 2: added to all the stuff that we buy, so anything
- 1:40Speaker 2: in country right now will be cheaper than anything that
- 1:43Speaker 2: is about to be sent here. They started this new
- 1:46Speaker 2: charge rate on Friday, which does make my weekend in
- 1:49Speaker 2: busy shops and a gay old time at the pictures
- 1:51Speaker 2: on Saturday night. Fel somewhat like to use another movie analogy,
- 1:55Speaker 2: a dinner party aboard the Titanic as it listed into
- 1:58Speaker 2: the Atlantic Ocean.
