Speaker 4: Hollis Lewis and Lisa Odie and miss Odie. Today she's
• 0:59
Speaker 4: brought us a guest. Yeah, she's going to introduce and
• 1:02
Speaker 4: we will go from there.
• 1:03
Speaker 5: Absolutely. I'm so excited to have this guest on the
• 1:06
  Speaker 5: podcast tonight.
• 1:07
  Speaker 3: Guys.
• 1:08
Speaker 5: He is a son of West Virginia and also a
• 1:11
Speaker 5: son of Marshall, so we've got a double thing going there.
• 1:15
Speaker 5: Just wanted to give a little background to this guest.
• 1:18
Speaker 5: He is currently the offensive line coach at the University
• 1:23
Speaker 5: of South Carolina. He has twenty nine years of experience
• 1:26
Speaker 5: coaching both at the collegiate and pro levels. He served
• 1:30
Speaker 5: as the assistant coach for the Thundering Herd in nineteen
• 1:33
Speaker 5: ninety two when they won the one Double A national
• 1:35
Speaker 5: championship Bad and not bad at all, and he also
• 1:38
Speaker 5: played on Marshall's football team through the year's nineteen eighty
• 1:42
Speaker 5: six and nineteen eighty nine and so, without further ado,
• 1:46
Speaker 5: from Charleston, West Virginia, mister Greg Atkins, welcome, Greg.
• 1:51
Speaker 6: Hey, how you guys doing it well?
• 1:54
  Speaker 3: How you going?
• 1:55
Speaker 5: How did you like that introduction? Greg?
• 1:58
Speaker 6: It was really good. As soon as you came online.
• 2:03
  Speaker 6: There's uh, there's a fire truck driving by me. I
• 2:08
Speaker 6: probably you put it on fire on fire introduction.
• 2:12
  Speaker 3: I appreciate it.
• 2:14
Speaker 4: Hey, Greg, just just real quick, you probably have to
• 2:19
Speaker 4: know Sterling Sharp. I'd have to think if you're if
• 2:21
Speaker 4: you're down in South Carolina, have you met.
• 2:25
  Speaker 6: Well, I don't really, I don't.
• 2:27
  Speaker 2: I don't.
• 2:27
  Speaker 6: I wouldn't say I know him, But what I do
• 2:30
Speaker 6: know is uh him as a golf course and he's uh.
• 2:39
Speaker 6: I think he's a guy that absolutely loves to win
• 2:43
  Speaker 6: at golf.
• 2:45
Speaker 4: Well, if by some chance you see him and you
• 2:48
Speaker 4: walk up to him and say, hey, Carl Lee has
• 2:51
Speaker 4: told you that I'm the reason he's playing golf as
• 2:54
Speaker 4: good as he's playing it.
• 2:56
Speaker 3: I introduced him to golf here in West Virginia.
• 2:59
Speaker 5: I believe. Don't believe that, Greg, It is not a
• 3:02
  Speaker 5: minute of it.
• 3:03
Speaker 4: He learned, played golf here and then went back to
• 3:06
Speaker 4: South Carolina, took lessons and got better than all of us.
• 3:11
Speaker 6: Well, just one thing. The one thing I know about
• 3:14
Speaker 6: Sirlin Sharp is he likes to win. And I don't
• 3:18
Speaker 6: know how good his golf game actually is really good.
• 3:22
  Speaker 6: He usually wins.
• 3:23
Speaker 3: He's really good. But as a side note, well go.
• 3:28
Speaker 5: Ahead, oh no, no, so, Greg, we were going to
• 3:31
Speaker 5: have you just talk a little bit about some of
• 3:32
Speaker 5: the successes you've experienced with the game Cocks so far
• 3:36
  Speaker 5: with your career.
• 3:38
Speaker 6: Well, I mean, certainly, I had an opportunity. I was
• 3:42
Speaker 6: coaching at Marshall when Coach Bamer got this job at
• 3:46
Speaker 6: South Carolina, and that was the transition between Doc and
• 3:50
Speaker 6: Coach Hull, and I got the opportunity to come to
• 3:53
Speaker 6: South Carolina with Coach Baemer and Coach Baemer was actually
• 3:59
Speaker 6: a graduate assistant at South Carolina UH at Tennessee when
• 4:03
Speaker 6: I was coaching at Tennessee. Uh So, so there was
• 4:06
Speaker 6: a connection. And uh and of course I've known his
• 4:09
Speaker 6: father for a number of years. His father actually recruited
• 4:12
Speaker 6: me out of high school a little bit at Virginia Tech.
• 4:15
Speaker 6: It was his first year at Virginia Tech. So so
• 4:18
Speaker 6: there's a lot of connections and and ultimately we we
• 4:23
Speaker 6: we've done a good job here at South Carolina.
• 4:25
  Speaker 3: UH.
• 4:26
Speaker 6: Coach Beemer obviously learned from his father, but he also
• 4:29
Speaker 6: learned from another a number of other people that he's
• 4:33
Speaker 6: worked for, Philip Falmer, Sylvester Chrome, she Spur. Uh So,
• 4:41
Speaker 6: I mean, the guy's been around a lot of legendary,
• 4:44
Speaker 6: legendary coaches, and he's well ahead of his time. I mean,
• 4:48
Speaker 6: his birthday was yesterday. I won't say hell who he is,
• 4:52
Speaker 6: but his birthday was yesterday, and I told him all
• 4:55
Speaker 6: good people are born in March. And uh uh or
• 4:59
  Speaker 6: I guess today go now, I'm sorry, I forget it's
• 5:02
Speaker 6: spring practice. There's a lot of a lot of stuff
• 5:05
Speaker 6: going on, but uh, you know, we we've done a
• 5:07
Speaker 6: good job. I mean, you know, it's all about a quarterback,
• 5:11
Speaker 6: you know, and uh, it's all about the offensive defensive
• 5:14
Speaker 6: line in this league and the Southeastern conferences. Uh is
• 5:19
Speaker 6: a lot of scrimmage league, like a lot of places.
• 5:22
Speaker 6: But if you don't have those kind of people on
• 5:26
Speaker 6: the O lines and D lines, you you have no
• 5:28
Speaker 6: chance in this league at all. And and we've done
• 5:32
Speaker 6: a good job of of uh recruiting the line of scrimmage. Uh,
• 5:38
Speaker 6: we actually have a quarterback that is phenomenal who is
• 5:42
Speaker 6: just just any second year here and he played phenomenally
• 5:46
Speaker 6: well for us last year. And uh, we're excited about
• 5:50
Speaker 6: the future. Uh. We have done a great job. And
• 5:54
Speaker 6: I'm sure we'll get into it. But the whole portal
• 5:57
Speaker 6: situation is I'm going to.
• 5:59
Speaker 3: Catch you off. That's what I wanted to ask you about.
• 6:01
Speaker 4: You've been in the game for a long time, You've
• 6:04
Speaker 4: been coaching for a while now, so and I know
• 6:07
Speaker 4: generally assistant coaches they they are tasked with recruiting not
• 6:11
Speaker 4: only their their specific position, but also a region. So
• 6:16
Speaker 4: how has recruiting changed for you given the transfer portal
• 6:20
Speaker 4: in what it is today.
• 6:22
Speaker 6: Well, I mean, we all still have an area that
• 6:25
Speaker 6: we're responsible for, but at the end of the day,
• 6:28
Speaker 6: there's a lot of position recruiting going on now. So
• 6:31
Speaker 6: you have to be you know, you have to be
• 6:34
Speaker 6: you know, you have to be good to recruit, you know,
• 6:40
Speaker 6: not only high school players because listen, we'll talk about
• 6:44
Speaker 6: the facts. I mean, at the end of the day,
• 6:46
Speaker 6: this is a still a developmental SEC program.
• 6:49
Speaker 3: We're not gonna be.
• 6:49
Speaker 6: Able to get the elite of elites all the time.
• 6:53
Speaker 6: But we've been able to attract several five star players
• 6:57
Speaker 6: UH to come here, and a couple offense linemen, and
• 7:00
Speaker 6: and a receiver and a defensive end that everybody's going
• 7:05
Speaker 6: to know about which they most Dylan Stewart, who will be,
• 7:09
Speaker 6: you know, whatever he wants to be, you know. And
• 7:13
Speaker 6: so at the end of the day, we have a
• 7:15
Speaker 6: great product to sell here. But we've done a really
• 7:18
Speaker 6: good job of the developmental stage of players. We have
• 7:24
Speaker 6: an outstanding weight room, we have an outstanding culture here,
• 7:28
Speaker 6: and you know, we have been we have developed players
• 7:33
Speaker 6: and we've supplemented it with the portal. We're still going
• 7:37
Speaker 6: to recruit high school players. We signed we signed one
• 7:40
Speaker 6: of the most high school players of anybody UH in
• 7:44
Speaker 6: the SEC. Last year. We signed twenty four high school players.
• 7:46
Speaker 4: Well, because that was one of that was one of
• 7:49
Speaker 4: the questions that I was going to ask you was
• 7:52
Speaker 4: because we've talked about high school kids are all of
• 7:55
Speaker 4: a sudden sudden getting left out because of transfers and
• 7:59
Speaker 4: things like that. But you guys are saying you're pretty
• 8:02
Speaker 4: much focusing on the top high school players.
• 8:06
Speaker 3: Am I hearing that? Is that what I'm here?
• 8:08
  Speaker 4: You know?
• 8:09
Speaker 6: We we we are. I mean, it's all gonna start.
• 8:11
Speaker 6: I mean, it's all starts at South Carolina with high
• 8:13
Speaker 6: school recruiting, and there's a you know, obviously in the
• 8:16
Speaker 6: state of South Carolina has produced a lot of number
• 8:18
Speaker 6: of great players. And then our footprint with you know,
• 8:22
Speaker 6: being a tasted to North Carolina really at tasted to Tennessee,
• 8:27
Speaker 6: attached to Georgia and Florida, UH and Alabama to to
• 8:32
Speaker 6: some extent, we're gonna we're gonna live in those states
• 8:36
Speaker 6: and we're still going to try to get the best
• 8:39
Speaker 6: players out of that state. And the other thing that
• 8:41
Speaker 6: we have is we have this little influx of d
• 8:44
Speaker 6: m V players because of coach Beemer's connections, our our
• 8:51
Speaker 6: dB coach Tory and Gray, who played at Virginia Tech
• 8:54
Speaker 6: who's who played in NFL for a number of years,
• 8:58
Speaker 6: and then starting uh Serling Lucas our d n coach,
• 9:02
Speaker 6: and then Lennie Teasley, who who's from Jersey and uh
• 9:07
Speaker 6: So we have this influx of d m V kids
• 9:11
Speaker 6: that have done a great job for us over you know,
• 9:15
Speaker 6: in our first four or five years here.
• 9:16
Speaker 5: That's amazing. Hey, Greg, So you've talked a little bit
• 9:19
Speaker 5: about some of the influences and the different teams are
• 9:22
Speaker 5: actually coaches and teams that you've worked with. Can you
• 9:24
Speaker 5: tell us a little bit about your history with football,
• 9:27
Speaker 5: how you got started in coaching, you know, what kind
• 9:30
Speaker 5: of things motivated you to this sport and actually to
• 9:33
Speaker 5: this position in general.
• 9:36
Speaker 6: Well, that's a great question. A lot of people asked
• 9:39
Speaker 6: that question, you know, like how did you get started
• 9:42
Speaker 6: in coaching? And you know, I was a player at
• 9:45
Speaker 6: Marshall from eighty six to eighty nine, and I was
• 9:48
Speaker 6: a UH. I played, I played under George Shomp and
• 9:52
Speaker 6: uh and then coach Chump left to become the head
• 9:56
Speaker 6: coach at Navy, and I was kind of a part
• 9:59
Speaker 6: of the I won't say the search committee, but I
• 10:02
Speaker 6: was a part of the informal interviews with potential candidates
• 10:06
Speaker 6: to replace George Trump. And there were two guys that
• 10:10
Speaker 6: I got a chance to meet with, and that was
• 10:13
Speaker 6: Jim donnon and that was a guy named Larry Blakeney.
• 10:17
Speaker 6: And uh, and so I'm I'm just hanging out in
• 10:22
Speaker 6: grad school after I finished playing and and and like
• 10:26
Speaker 6: four or five days after Jim Donnay got the job,
• 10:31
Speaker 6: he said, what are you doing? And you know, and
• 10:34
  Speaker 6: I was like, well, I don't know. I'm just I'm
• 10:37
Speaker 6: in grad school. Uh, you know, I'm trying to I'm
• 10:40
Speaker 6: going to do it in my life, you know. And
• 10:41
Speaker 6: he said, why don't you come out and help us
• 10:43
Speaker 6: out in spring practice and say if you want to
• 10:45
Speaker 6: do this coaching thing. And I did and and so
• 10:51
Speaker 6: so I did and and uh, you know, I won't
• 10:54
Speaker 6: get into the details of how I ultimately, you know,
• 10:58
Speaker 6: kept going because it was an unforeseen situation that happened
• 11:03
Speaker 6: to somebody on defense that I actually my first year
• 11:07
Speaker 6: in coaching, I coached the defensive line and me and
• 11:11
Speaker 6: Brad Lambert actually coached the defensive line at Marshall in
• 11:16
Speaker 6: nineteen ninety one. And then I moved back to offense
• 11:19
Speaker 6: and then you know, coach coach down got the job
• 11:23
Speaker 6: at Georgia. I was twenty five years old, and I
• 11:26
Speaker 6: had no I had I had no idea what was
• 11:28
  Speaker 6: going on.
• 11:31
  Speaker 3: I mean.
• 11:35
Speaker 6: Like I was twenty five and I like, you know,
• 11:37
Speaker 6: you had no idea what was happening in the world.
• 11:40
Speaker 6: You know, you just like you have no idea at
• 11:43
Speaker 6: twenty five years old, what like what's going on? And
• 11:48
Speaker 6: and I'll never forget it. I was, I was at
• 11:51
Speaker 6: my I'm sorry, my late wife grandmother's house and uh
• 11:59
Speaker 6: and this is like, this is like the evolution of
• 12:02
Speaker 6: cell phones, right, yeah, there's no there's no cell phones
• 12:05
Speaker 6: in ninety four. You got a backbone maybe if you're lying.
• 12:09
Speaker 6: And one of the things I always remember Jim donnad
• 12:12
Speaker 6: I always said, was like like, hey, we're going to
• 12:14
Speaker 6: have two weeks off. We lost in the National Championship game,
• 12:18
Speaker 6: and he said, hey, everybody, uh, make sure you leave
• 12:21
Speaker 6: a number, a couple of numbers where you might be
• 12:24
Speaker 6: over the Christmas holidays and no, behold, on Christmas Day,
• 12:30
Speaker 6: I get a call from Jim donnah and uh and
• 12:34
Speaker 6: he said, hey, uh, where are you at? And I
• 12:36
Speaker 6: was like, uh, well, I'm in Bell West, Virginia. Nice,
• 12:42
Speaker 6: that's where that's where her grandmother lived. And uh. Between
• 12:46
Speaker 6: Bell and I was just like all right, and he says,
• 12:49
Speaker 6: how long before you get to Huntington And I was like, well,
• 12:52
Speaker 6: I can be there whenever you need. This is Christmas
• 12:54
Speaker 6: Day now and uh and uh. So I drove the
• 12:59
Speaker 6: Huntings in West Virginia and I got a job at
• 13:02
Speaker 6: the University of Georgia at twenty five years old.
• 13:04
Speaker 4: And so let me let me ask you this coach,
• 13:06
Speaker 4: just as like I said, you, you coached a lot
• 13:09
Speaker 4: of particularly with that Marshall team. I believe William King
• 13:12
Speaker 4: and Mark Mason and a couple of local guys were there.
• 13:15
Speaker 4: So let me ask you, like, with all your experience
• 13:18
Speaker 4: and where you're at, now, what are you looking for?
• 13:21
Speaker 4: Because you know, and I'm asking this question because I'm
• 13:23
  Speaker 4: a I'm a I'm a old quarterback and I love
• 13:25
Speaker 4: nothing more than a good offensive line. So so what
• 13:28
Speaker 4: what are we looking for in in a in a
• 13:31
Speaker 4: an elite division one offensive lineman?
• 13:33
Speaker 6: Now, well, I mean, I think I think it goes
• 13:37
Speaker 6: for every position. Truthfully, I think the world we live
• 13:40
Speaker 6: in today in college football is a different world than
• 13:44
Speaker 6: it was three years ago, and it'll be different two
• 13:47
Speaker 6: years from now. I think you have to change with times.
• 13:51
Speaker 6: I think you can't. You can't be so old school
• 13:54
Speaker 6: like I like, I'm an old school guy. I'm gonna
• 13:57
Speaker 6: coach your I'm gonna cut your yard. I promise you that.
• 14:00
Speaker 6: But you also got to figure like, at the end
• 14:03
Speaker 6: of the day, you really have to get to know
• 14:05
Speaker 6: the player, and this player has to want to be coached,
• 14:11
Speaker 6: because today the world is about nli and it's about
• 14:16
Speaker 6: like what's cool and what shoes am I gonna wear?
• 14:19
Speaker 6: And what uniform am I gonna wear? And all this
• 14:22
Speaker 6: kind of stuff, and I could care less about all that. Truthfully,
• 14:28
Speaker 6: all I want is guys who want to play football
• 14:32
Speaker 6: and be tough, smart and dependable. And if they're tough,
• 14:36
Speaker 6: smart and dependable, if their high school coach, and through
• 14:40
Speaker 6: my investigation, if they can do all those kind of things,
• 14:45
Speaker 6: then obviously they got to be able to play the game.
• 14:47
Speaker 6: And if they can do that, then I'm really interested,
• 14:51
Speaker 6: you know, And it's just a matter of how they're
• 14:53
Speaker 6: gonna fit to our program here at South Carolina or
• 14:57
Speaker 6: any other place I've really been. But the world today
• 15:01
Speaker 6: is just like crazy, you know, in a number of
• 15:04
Speaker 6: different ways. As we all know, but this whole thing's
• 15:07
Speaker 6: hopefully gonna settle down here in the very in near future.
• 15:11
Speaker 4: Do you think, coach and I'm gonna, we're gonna, We're
• 15:13
Speaker 4: gonna let you go here. One one of my concerns,
• 15:18
Speaker 4: you know, is when you start looking at players and
• 15:21
Speaker 4: you're like, oh, man, I really like this player.
• 15:24
Speaker 3: But next thing, you know, you know, everybody's looking for
• 15:27
  Speaker 3: that in nil.
• 15:30
Speaker 4: How do you all approach the kid you know that
• 15:34
Speaker 4: that you can't reach like that he's just putting a
• 15:37
Speaker 4: number out there. And do people do parents understand and
• 15:40
Speaker 4: do kids recruits understand that there could be actually a
• 15:45
Speaker 4: limit that the school has, but everything.
• 15:48
Speaker 3: At the school might be perfect for you.
• 15:51
  Speaker 6: Well, I think it's everybody's learning. I bet I learn
• 15:54
Speaker 6: every day. I'm fifty, I'm fifty seven years old, and
• 15:58
Speaker 6: I bet this is my thirty six years coaching, and
• 16:01
Speaker 6: I learn every day about what's next, right, And I
• 16:08
Speaker 6: think the people that are not learning about what's next
• 16:11
Speaker 6: are the people that got to be in trouble. And
• 16:15
Speaker 6: I think the people that are looking to the future
• 16:18
Speaker 6: needs to also say, Okay, where are these gudrails? Where
• 16:22
Speaker 6: are we going? Where is the revenue sharing where's the
• 16:26
Speaker 6: NLI and all that. Listen. I'm all for players getting
• 16:29
Speaker 6: paid like I love it. I wish I had it
• 16:32
  Speaker 6: when I was playing. I mean, I wish I'd got
• 16:37
Speaker 6: my dad. When my dad gave me twenty dollars after
• 16:40
Speaker 6: a game on Saturday, I was jacked up. What I'm saying,
• 16:46
Speaker 6: I was jacked up, and my daddy gave me that
• 16:48
Speaker 6: twenty dollars because I thought I made him proud, right,
• 16:52
Speaker 6: you know. And at the end of the day, you know,
• 16:55
Speaker 6: I think you've got to manage all that stuff. And
• 16:58
Speaker 6: I'm not really involved than too much of that stuff.
• 17:02
Speaker 6: What I am involved is is is just trying to
• 17:06
Speaker 6: find the best players available and then and then and
• 17:09
Speaker 6: and find and make sure they have the right characteristics
• 17:12
Speaker 6: that we want, and then we go from there and
• 17:16
Speaker 6: now they they you know, we have this whole other
• 17:20
Speaker 6: entourage that can figure out all that other stuff.
• 17:24
  Speaker 3: I don't.
• 17:24
  Speaker 6: I don't.
• 17:25
  Speaker 3: I don't.
• 17:25
Speaker 6: I really don't have to figure that out, even though
• 17:28
Speaker 6: there's you know, I'll be honest, if a player brings
• 17:31
Speaker 6: that up very early when I'm getting to know a player,
• 17:35
Speaker 6: then that that's kind of a turn off for me,
• 17:37
Speaker 6: to be honest with you. But if if a player
• 17:40
Speaker 6: is trying to figure out, how are you going to
• 17:43
Speaker 6: get me better? What are you going to do for me?
• 17:45
Speaker 6: How do you see me fitting in and and asking
• 17:49
Speaker 6: from an academic standpoint, and all the things that we
• 17:53
Speaker 6: used to talk about. If they're asking those types of
• 17:57
Speaker 6: questions and the parents are, then I'm gonna be more
• 18:00
Speaker 6: intrigued by that human. Now with that being said, it's
• 18:04
Speaker 6: not like there's not money available for certain caliber type player,
• 18:12
Speaker 6: you know. But luckily I don't have to deal with that.
• 18:15
Speaker 6: Like my my job is not to deal with that.
• 18:19
Speaker 6: My job is to coach and uh and recruit the
• 18:24
Speaker 6: best players we can get at South Carolina. And you know,
• 18:29
  Speaker 6: it's it's it's a beautiful thing. It's a beautiful thing,
• 18:33
Speaker 6: but it's but it's I think the people that can change,
• 18:37
Speaker 6: and I think like the old school guys, to be
• 18:40
Speaker 6: honest with you, like myself, like us, well we're all right,
• 18:45
Speaker 6: like us, all of us that can change are the
• 18:50
Speaker 6: people that are going to be really good because we
• 18:53
Speaker 6: were good when this wasn't wasn't an issue and uh,
• 18:57
Speaker 6: and now when we're good in the past and we
• 19:01
Speaker 6: don't really deal with that part of it we're still
• 19:03
Speaker 6: gonna be good and we're gonna be great.
• 19:05
Speaker 4: Actually, all right, well coach, we we're gonna have to
• 19:09
Speaker 4: take a quick break here.
• 19:10
Speaker 3: Man. We appreciate that information.
• 19:12
Speaker 4: And actually when when we when we come out of
• 19:14
Speaker 4: this commercial, then I'm gonna also kind of touch back
• 19:18
Speaker 4: a couple of things that you said I gotta throw
• 19:19
  Speaker 4: at these times.
• 19:20
Speaker 3: So we appreciate your time being here today. We really do.
• 19:24
Speaker 5: Good luck with spring practice. Greg.
• 19:26
Speaker 6: Thanks coach, all right, thank you. We're about a halfway through.
• 19:30
Speaker 5: All right, talk to you seeing. Thanks.
• 19:32
Speaker 4: All right, let me be before we before we run
• 19:34
Speaker 4: off to a quick break. Hollis Lewis is gonna have
• 19:37
Speaker 4: to leave us early, and so we're gonna we're gonna
• 19:39
Speaker 4: give him a little bit of mic time.
• 19:41
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 19:41
Speaker 4: So again when we talk what I love about doing
• 19:45
Speaker 4: this show is that we not only talk about current events,
• 19:48
Speaker 4: we talk about the future of sports, we talk about
• 19:51
Speaker 4: the past sports, and we also talk about all levels
• 19:54
Speaker 4: and anything social issues concerning sports. So, you know, we
• 19:57
Speaker 4: have a couple of bills in the West Virginia Legislator
• 20:00
Speaker 4: that would be affecting sports here in West Virginia. So
• 20:04
Speaker 4: the first one is a house built twenty five to
• 20:06
Speaker 4: seventy six. And what that does is that codifies nil
• 20:11
Speaker 4: you know, into West Virginia law. Again, not that it
• 20:14
Speaker 4: was ever illegal, it's just that, you know, it's such
• 20:17
Speaker 4: a new concept that most states didn't have it codified
• 20:20
Speaker 4: in law. They would have like a policy and procedure
• 20:23
Speaker 4: through like their landmark university such as ours as WVU,
• 20:27
Speaker 4: and normally everybody else would follow that. So you know,
• 20:31
Speaker 4: early on a couple of states like Virginia and Florida,
• 20:33
Speaker 4: they had codified it. So West Virginia we caught up
• 20:35
Speaker 4: when they actually codified in IL. Just to tell you
• 20:38
Speaker 4: what it is and what it's not, different things of
• 20:39
Speaker 4: that nature, it's really simple bill. Now along with that,
• 20:42
Speaker 4: which we can have some discussion on, is House Built
• 20:45
Speaker 4: twenty five ninety five, and basically what that does is
• 20:48
Speaker 4: that codifies NIL collectives. Now, previously nil collectives they were
• 20:55
Speaker 4: sort of a third party. They were associated with the school,
• 21:00
Speaker 4: but not really. And now with sort of the revenue
• 21:03
Speaker 4: sharing model that that most schools and most states are following,
• 21:08
Speaker 4: n I L excuse me, NIL collectives are directly tied
• 21:11
Speaker 4: to the school. So not only can they you know,
• 21:15
Speaker 4: raise money, generate revenue for the school far as you know,
• 21:19
Speaker 4: paying some of the athletes through the ni L, but
• 21:21
Speaker 4: they can also have kind of property share agreements and
• 21:24
Speaker 4: and and you know not only the physical property, maybe
• 21:27
Speaker 4: some IP properties. So they're directly tied where those student
• 21:30
Speaker 4: athletes are getting paid through the through the school, through
• 21:33
Speaker 4: the NIL collective, so basically through the school.
• 21:37
Speaker 5: So so let me ask you this Hall. So this
• 21:39
Speaker 5: did not exist before when these when these non profit
• 21:42
Speaker 5: entities were in play, there there were non profit unities
• 21:45
Speaker 5: to do the money right, but they weren't associated with, not.
• 21:48
Speaker 4: Directly speciated with the school. So like like I said,
• 21:51
Speaker 4: they were a third party. Although you had like somebody
• 21:53
Speaker 4: like Georgia Tech. They had their collective and they had
• 21:56
Speaker 4: sort of a grayish area where they would kind of
• 21:59
Speaker 4: tie to the school but not but for most part
• 22:02
Speaker 4: they were These collectors were formed of independent boosters who
• 22:06
Speaker 4: didn't like you know, these these school Now what was
• 22:10
Speaker 4: going through the school is just like I said, the
• 22:12
Speaker 4: NIL agreement. So again as I mentioned earlier twenty five
• 22:16
Speaker 4: seventy six that were quodify as in IL the contracts
• 22:20
Speaker 4: and the school would say, you know, you can do this,
• 22:22
Speaker 4: you can represent these brands like for example, athletes, they
• 22:25
Speaker 4: can't represent like tobacco and alcohol.
• 22:28
Speaker 3: And gaming, different things to that nature.
• 22:30
Speaker 4: So they was sort of, like I said, set the policy,
• 22:32
Speaker 4: but the third parties would actually do the pain. So
• 22:35
Speaker 4: I think maybe what this has the ability to do,
• 22:38
Speaker 4: it can sort of hone in some of the things,
• 22:41
Speaker 4: make more uniform rules across maybe the nation, and you know,
• 22:46
Speaker 4: set maybe some parameters on exactly you know, pay scales
• 22:50
Speaker 4: and different things of that nature. So that almost the
• 22:53
Speaker 4: way I look at it, it's almost working like you know,
• 22:56
Speaker 4: sort of like a almost like a GM sort of
• 22:59
Speaker 4: if that makes sense, because not only can they you know,
• 23:02
Speaker 4: pay the players, but they can also help with different things,
• 23:05
Speaker 4: like I said, licensing and contract agreements, some educational stuff
• 23:10
Speaker 4: and different things of that. And you're talking when you're starting,
• 23:12
Speaker 4: when you start talking about you're talking about like contract
• 23:17
Speaker 4: deals with Nike or something like that. So instead of
• 23:22
Speaker 4: me dealing with that kind of on my own and
• 23:25
Speaker 4: quote I don't have an agent, Yeah, that can be
• 23:30
Speaker 4: managed through the school essentially. Yes, So like like exactly
• 23:34
Speaker 4: so branding deals, maybe even some ips. So if I'm like,
• 23:37
Speaker 4: you know, remember Johnny Manziel with the money sign and
• 23:40
Speaker 4: cool nicknames a lot of a lot of kids. They'll
• 23:42
Speaker 4: do now, they'll license those names and copyright those images.
• 23:46
Speaker 4: So these n IL collectors we may probably be able
• 23:50
Speaker 4: to assist with some of those things. So it basically
• 23:53
Speaker 4: it's keeping things in house. Now again, you know, if
• 23:56
Speaker 4: that's a good thing, is that a bad thing? It
• 23:59
  Speaker 4: can depend.
• 24:00
Speaker 3: My my question to it.
• 24:02
Speaker 4: I think it's great. I think you know to have
• 24:04
Speaker 4: the school so you don't get tricked. You know, you
• 24:07
Speaker 4: have someone there at the school that's gonna assist you
• 24:10
Speaker 4: with this process. What makes what's strange to me is
• 24:19
Speaker 4: if I get that, why would I leave? You know,
• 24:22
Speaker 4: I don't mean to bring up another subject, but you
• 24:23
Speaker 4: know what I'm saying, like, if this school's gonna do
• 24:26
Speaker 4: this for me, and not saying that every school won't
• 24:28
Speaker 4: do it, you know, and you're giving me an io
• 24:31
Speaker 4: money and you're helping me get it set up and
• 24:33
Speaker 4: to where I know I'm gonna get it, that's gonna
• 24:35
Speaker 4: be structured and all this kind of stuff.
• 24:37
Speaker 3: Why would I leave?
• 24:38
Speaker 4: I think the thing that gives me pause is that,
• 24:41
Speaker 4: for example, again it becomes much simpler, well not even so,
• 24:46
Speaker 4: like let's say, let's say you get a Nike deal.
• 24:49
Speaker 4: Let's say that and you are a sophomore in college
• 24:53
Speaker 4: basketball football player. You get a Nike deal. The Nike
• 24:56
Speaker 4: deal is structured and the collectors helps set that up. Now,
• 25:01
Speaker 4: what happens when you go pro? If do do they
• 25:04
Speaker 4: continue to get a piece of that contract? What happens
• 25:07
Speaker 4: if you are a creative college student and you set
• 25:11
Speaker 4: up some sort of IP you got some cool I'm
• 25:14
Speaker 4: Johnny Cash and you start selling T shirts out of
• 25:17
Speaker 4: your own you know, you you made your own brand
• 25:19
Speaker 4: and your image, and the collective's help set that up.
• 25:22
Speaker 4: As that grows and continuing you have a professional career.
• 25:25
Speaker 4: Do they maintain some sort of IP.
• 25:28
  Speaker 3: Rights with that?
• 25:29
  Speaker 4: So I think it's a good thing, but I think
• 25:32
Speaker 4: it could get tricky as we go down the line. Well,
• 25:35
Speaker 4: especially when you start talking about the top player. Let's
• 25:38
Speaker 4: say you're the top player on the team and I
• 25:40
Speaker 4: got I'm working with you. Well, you're gonna be a
• 25:43
Speaker 4: first round pick. I ain't letting you go. You know
• 25:46
Speaker 4: what I'm saying, I want to keep that because now
• 25:50
Speaker 4: I'm am I your agent or am I just that guy?
• 25:53
  Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying, and that's what I'm saying the
• 25:55
Speaker 4: length of the contract. So I would be it's gonna
• 25:57
Speaker 4: be interesting to see how these are going to be implemented.
• 26:00
Speaker 5: Man, Yeah, well, I was just gonna ask you. Is
• 26:02
Speaker 5: another reason that this this House bill was passed was
• 26:05
Speaker 5: it kind of protects the schools from like the NC
• 26:08
Speaker 5: double A, from stepping in like if there's any it
• 26:10
Speaker 5: blocks them from changing things, like it kind of guarantees
• 26:14
Speaker 5: that this is this is the way it has to
• 26:16
Speaker 5: be because it's in law.
• 26:17
Speaker 3: Rather than the end hundred percent.
• 26:19
Speaker 4: Like I said, this state law, like I said, and
• 26:22
Speaker 4: like I said, each state is doing it differently, So
• 26:25
Speaker 4: it does give some protection to the schools.
• 26:27
Speaker 3: Like I said, far.
• 26:27
Speaker 5: As proceeds the NC double A.
• 26:31
  Speaker 4: I don't I'm not, I'm I'm I don't want to
• 26:34
Speaker 4: say that. But even within the bill itself, it did
• 26:37
Speaker 4: give some protections to from from the conferences in school
• 26:40
Speaker 4: from coming down because again, everybody, unfortunately when it comes
• 26:44
  Speaker 4: in n I L everybody's kind of doing it a
• 26:46
Speaker 4: little different from state to state. There's no uniform policy,
• 26:49
Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
• 26:50
Speaker 5: I just wanted to say something that's related to this
• 26:52
Speaker 5: really quick, guys, But I was reading through the article
• 26:55
Speaker 5: about this bill, and it was kind of layman terms,
• 26:58
Speaker 5: not not not so much of the the legal jargon,
• 27:00
Speaker 5: but basically it was talking about the money is available
• 27:03
Speaker 5: at this time, right now for the schools. And from
• 27:06
Speaker 5: what I read, and this was from a reputable news source,
• 27:10
Speaker 5: that WU has twenty point five million available to share
• 27:13
Speaker 5: with their student athletes through this new entity, Marshall has
• 27:17
Speaker 5: one point five million.
• 27:18
Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's going to be it's like, and I
• 27:20
  Speaker 3: think that's.
• 27:21
Speaker 5: Been so the disparity.
• 27:23
Speaker 4: Yeah, and we've we've seen that through like even like
• 27:25
Speaker 4: the NCAA and March madness ain't really been much madness.
• 27:27
Speaker 4: That's one and two, right, And another interesting thing we'll
• 27:30
Speaker 4: move on. But another interesting thing about the collectives is
• 27:33
Speaker 4: not only do they you know, help form contracts with
• 27:36
Speaker 4: different things in that nxture for the student athletes, but
• 27:38
Speaker 4: there can be property move between you know, the collective
• 27:43
Speaker 4: and the school. So it could be a situation in
• 27:46
Speaker 4: which maybe that collective could have naming rights over the stadium,
• 27:49
Speaker 4: or they could buy and sell land that's you know,
• 27:52
Speaker 4: that the school has. And so that's what I'm saying.
• 27:55
  Speaker 4: It's not a clear cut.
• 27:57
Speaker 3: You're making me feel a little a little one comfortable
• 28:00
  Speaker 3: with it.
• 28:02
Speaker 4: So I think it's gonna be one of them things
• 28:04
Speaker 4: that's gonna have to be. We're gonna have to see
• 28:06
Speaker 4: it in action, and then as the years going, it's
• 28:09
Speaker 4: gonna be it's gonna need to be probably tightened up.
• 28:12
Speaker 4: You can guarantee that somebody's gonna do something wrong.
• 28:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's that's the nature of it.
• 28:19
Speaker 4: That you know, somebody's gonna get greedy, somebody's gonna show
• 28:22
Speaker 4: up and be like, you know, oh, this took place
• 28:27
Speaker 4: behind behind closed doors.
• 28:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, there's just no way.
• 28:30
Speaker 4: That with that kind of money out there available. Man,
• 28:33
Speaker 4: I just don't see how that stays clean and a
• 28:37
  Speaker 4: good thing is.
• 28:37
Speaker 3: Just and it's kind of independent.
• 28:39
Speaker 4: When you talked about the disparity disparity between Marshall and WVU,
• 28:43
Speaker 4: the good thing about it is that collective will be
• 28:45
Speaker 4: tasked with raising that money up, so they would try
• 28:48
Speaker 4: to one of the probably the primary things to do
• 28:50
Speaker 4: is try to raise that difference from one point five up. Yes, Now,
• 28:54
Speaker 4: what bill I really like is of House Bill twenty four.
• 28:57
Speaker 4: And again, just for the view for anybody listening, these
• 29:00
Speaker 4: are all current. All these haven't necessarily passed, they haven't
• 29:03
Speaker 4: gone to the governor's signed these or things that's been
• 29:05
Speaker 4: introduced in some passing the House. It's house built twenty
• 29:09
Speaker 4: four to ninety one, which allows online raffles to college
• 29:12
Speaker 4: is So, for example, if you go into a college
• 29:15
Speaker 4: sporting event or prior high school for that matter, there's
• 29:18
Speaker 4: fifty to fifty fifty fifty tickets, right. So what this
• 29:22
Speaker 4: would do is that it would end the goo fencing.
• 29:26
Speaker 4: So basically you could sell these fifty to fifty tickets
• 29:28
Speaker 4: online so you wouldn't necessarily have a fifty a physical raffle,
• 29:32
Speaker 4: and you could sell them to anybody across the country.
• 29:35
Speaker 3: So for example, if.
• 29:35
Speaker 4: You're at a WUVU game, you could sell a fifty
• 29:39
Speaker 4: to fifty raffle tickets to not only everybody in the stands,
• 29:42
Speaker 4: but anybody perceivably probably in the United States. So what
• 29:46
Speaker 4: I like about this is that you like Yeah, what
• 29:50
Speaker 4: you like about it is that you smaller schools. So
• 29:52
Speaker 4: if you had like a state, and I think it
• 29:55
Speaker 4: could do two things. Number One, it can raise revenue
• 29:58
Speaker 4: again because you're not limited to the people that are
• 30:00
Speaker 4: in the audience. And number two, it might raise viewership
• 30:04
Speaker 4: because even like it's like a West Virginia State University,
• 30:06
Speaker 4: where we're having our games broadcasting on like a website.
• 30:10
Speaker 4: On our website, you may be encouraged to watch the
• 30:12
Speaker 4: game in order to see if you won the fifty
• 30:14
Speaker 4: to fifty raffle. So I think I think it could
• 30:17
Speaker 4: be a net positive, particularly where we're at with with
• 30:20
  Speaker 4: n I l okay. So I don't, I don't. This
• 30:26
Speaker 4: is not quote gambling, right, this is not like that.
• 30:29
Speaker 3: I mean, I guess, but cut the raffle.
• 30:31
Speaker 4: But what what what kills me is the whole the
• 30:35
Speaker 4: whole gambling thing, you know, and and NFL and NBA
• 30:40
Speaker 4: and all that kind of stuff. How players, Oh my gosh,
• 30:43
Speaker 4: you there's no way you can gamble because there could
• 30:45
Speaker 4: be a chance that you're gambling. You may be betting
• 30:48
Speaker 4: against your team or whatever whatever whatever. So we need
• 30:51
Speaker 4: to keep gambling out of sport.
• 30:54
  Speaker 3: Really.
• 30:54
Speaker 4: Now we got now we've got the major commercials at
• 30:59
Speaker 4: sporting of scambling. And now and we're gonna we're gonna
• 31:06
Speaker 4: we're gonna try to do in college. We're gonna try
• 31:09
Speaker 4: to take a step down from actually gambling and and
• 31:13
Speaker 4: and let's call it fifty to fifty or you know,
• 31:16
Speaker 4: all this kind of stuff so that we can make money.
• 31:20
Speaker 4: I mean, but to you at least's point, Lisa pointed
• 31:23
Speaker 4: out why this is important to school like Marshall, where
• 31:26
Speaker 4: you got one point five in your collective versus w
• 31:29
Speaker 4: VU where you got twenty.
• 31:30
Speaker 3: You need so so so if I'm a player.
• 31:34
  Speaker 4: And I and I and I'm out there and I'm
• 31:35
Speaker 4: doing this, I'm I'm putting my money in it, and
• 31:38
Speaker 4: I can't pay. No, no, no, this is for this is
• 31:40
  Speaker 4: a this is a fit. It's just like it's damed
• 31:43
Speaker 4: a game. Yeah it's not to outside the game, but.
• 31:46
  Speaker 3: I can't but I can't. I can't put my money
• 31:48
Speaker 3: like I think you probably would be prohibited from doing that.
• 31:51
Speaker 5: I'm gonna say that.
• 31:52
Speaker 4: But why why It's just like if you work at
• 31:54
Speaker 4: the lottery, you can't play the lottery.
• 31:57
Speaker 5: I mean, I understand what what what Hollis is saying
• 32:00
Speaker 5: about a way it's another way to raise the revenues
• 32:02
Speaker 5: for these smaller schools and well even for the bigger
• 32:05
Speaker 5: schools for that matter. I don't know what it is
• 32:07
Speaker 5: about it, and maybe it's because I'm old school, but
• 32:11
Speaker 5: the fifty to fifty raffle with the paper tickets at
• 32:14
Speaker 5: the ball game seems innocent to me. Going online and
• 32:19
Speaker 5: selling it nationwide takes it to a whole different level.
• 32:22
  Speaker 5: And I don't know why. I feel like there's just
• 32:24
Speaker 5: so many things that could crash and burn with that.
• 32:29
  Speaker 5: I don't know. I feel like that there's things that
• 32:30
Speaker 5: could it could get dirty. Does that Does that make sense?
• 32:35
Speaker 3: I don't think so. Because you're selling to your family
• 32:37
Speaker 3: is my issue is.
• 32:38
Speaker 5: But you're saying, like you said, yeah, to your family,
• 32:42
Speaker 5: but it could be.
• 32:42
Speaker 3: At fad fan base.
• 32:43
Speaker 5: Yeah, so it could go outside of the family.
• 32:45
Speaker 3: I mean that's true. But normally, like I said, if
• 32:47
Speaker 3: you if it's like why stay clean? Like why would
• 32:50
Speaker 3: this state? I mean, but why would he get dirty?
• 32:52
  Speaker 3: It's a fifty fifty?
• 32:53
Speaker 4: Why would he get dirty? It's a fifty fifty when
• 32:56
Speaker 4: we ever heard of a problem.
• 32:57
Speaker 3: I just think you can manipulate it more, make fifty.
• 33:00
Speaker 4: You can make it when making a simple thing, or
• 33:03
Speaker 4: you could actually say okay, it's kind of like I
• 33:08
Speaker 4: envisiited like this, all right, so we're we're gonna sell
• 33:11
Speaker 4: you the virtual tickets online, so and then you can
• 33:15
Speaker 4: actually steal you can make it a spectacle, right because
• 33:18
Speaker 4: you can sell these virtual tickets online, put them in
• 33:21
Speaker 4: a huge bucket, and then at the halftime you can
• 33:24
Speaker 4: actually pull out the physical the ticket and you can
• 33:26
Speaker 4: actually announce it during the game. So I can now
• 33:29
Speaker 4: sit and then go on lines and I can call
• 33:31
Speaker 4: out who won. So it could be a big spectacle,
• 33:33
Speaker 4: and I'm selling it to the fan base that are there.
• 33:35
Speaker 4: So if it's a pit WVU, those are the fans
• 33:38
Speaker 4: that's gonna be watching that game.
• 33:39
Speaker 5: And to your point, the protein, like we we went
• 33:42
Speaker 5: to a spring training game down in when we were
• 33:45
Speaker 5: in clear Water, and they actually had something similar to
• 33:48
Speaker 5: what you're saying, Like it wasn't the tip paper tickets
• 33:51
Speaker 5: like I'm thinking about fifty to fifty you know in
• 33:53
Speaker 5: high school games. It was actually they had like a
• 33:56
Speaker 5: machine that could take a credit card or cash and
• 33:59
Speaker 5: then they printed out all these tickets and then you
• 34:01
Speaker 5: didn't have to be present to win. You could go
• 34:03
Speaker 5: on a website and check your number. Not quite you know,
• 34:06
Speaker 5: the video production that you're saying, it could could happen,
• 34:08
Speaker 5: but it's already here.
• 34:10
Speaker 3: I think it would be a good thing.
• 34:11
Speaker 4: And we'll go over house built twenty four excuse me,
• 34:14
Speaker 4: twenty twenty seven to seventy four. That basic creates an
• 34:18
Speaker 4: increases penalties if somebody attacks a culture official. So I
• 34:22
Speaker 4: think that's a good thing. Twenty House Built twenty three
• 34:25
Speaker 4: fifty five. This bill would have Again, this bill got
• 34:29
Speaker 4: soundly defeated. So this is not going into law. This
• 34:32
Speaker 4: is dead, this is DA This is not a bill
• 34:34
Speaker 4: that we'll see. This would have allowed high school and
• 34:38
Speaker 4: middle schools to play not only during the end season sport,
• 34:42
Speaker 4: but they would have been allowed to play travel at
• 34:44
Speaker 4: the same time. This was a horrible bill, horrible nobody
• 34:47
Speaker 4: liked it. Like I said, it got soundly pitted the
• 34:50
Speaker 4: pasture where it should have been because it was dramatically problematic.
• 34:55
Speaker 4: All right, I'm going to break it. I'm going to
• 34:57
Speaker 4: bring that up based off of football. You'll be gone,
• 35:01
Speaker 4: but me and Lisa we'll touch on that on football. Ladies, gentlemen,

• 36:16
Speaker 3: We were in a fight anyway, when we were leaving.
• 36:19
Speaker 5: Mike dropped in the last.
• 36:22
Speaker 3: He made his point, got to get out of the way.
• 36:25
Speaker 4: So all right, so so let's let's we're gonna kind
• 36:29
Speaker 4: of change the direction a little bit. You know, we
• 36:34
Speaker 4: we talked and again let's go to n Aisle and
• 36:36
Speaker 4: let's let's talk the effect and impact that it has
• 36:41
Speaker 4: on let's say basketball and collegiate basketball. Yes, in most cases,
• 36:50
Speaker 4: every year, huge upsets, right, everybody like gets excited because
• 36:56
  Speaker 4: there's these upsets.
• 36:57
Speaker 5: Sure not this year?
• 37:00
  Speaker 3: Not this year?
• 37:02
  Speaker 5: You plan basketball.
• 37:03
  Speaker 3: Ones and twos.
• 37:07
Speaker 4: Are basically in the semis right.
• 37:10
Speaker 3: Now, I'm going to make the case.
• 37:13
Speaker 4: Now I could be dead wrong here, Nil, it is
• 37:17
Speaker 4: all part of that. I think those particular teams could
• 37:22
Speaker 4: very well be the strongest teams based off of their
• 37:26
Speaker 4: nil or let's just say, the most skilled players that
• 37:31
Speaker 4: any teams could actually feel like, what, what do you
• 37:35
  Speaker 4: think that?
• 37:36
Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I would not disagree with that statement.
• 37:38
Speaker 5: I mean, obviously, what happened this year during March Madness
• 37:41
Speaker 5: was far from madness. We had no cinderellas. It was
• 37:45
Speaker 5: you know, pretty much the teams that were supposed to
• 37:48
Speaker 5: win won their games, and usually by quite a margin.
• 37:50
Speaker 5: It wasn't a lot of close games. Now at the beginning,
• 37:53
Speaker 5: I think there was maybe one or two and I
• 37:54
Speaker 5: can't think of the names of the teams. It escapes me.
• 37:56
Speaker 5: But there was maybe one that made it pass that
• 37:58
Speaker 5: first round, but then the second game it wasn't even close.
• 38:01
Speaker 5: So what you're saying with the nil and the and
• 38:04
Speaker 5: the portal, I mean that that that is is just it.
• 38:09
Speaker 5: It's tamed March Madness, so to speak. I think what's
• 38:13
Speaker 5: happened is when you do get a Cinderella team like
• 38:16
Speaker 5: you're I think the Florida Golf Coast, you know that
• 38:19
Speaker 5: was one that years ago you had a had a
• 38:22
Speaker 5: really great deep run as a Cinderella in the March Madness.
• 38:26
Speaker 5: You've had teams like James Madison University. I'm just throwing
• 38:31
Speaker 5: names that from the past. You know, probably what's happened
• 38:34
Speaker 5: to those teams. They build a great team that could
• 38:37
Speaker 5: that can compete with these blue bloods and these schools
• 38:41
Speaker 5: that are typically you know, household names Duke, North Carolina,
• 38:45
Speaker 5: and and they they those teams come in and and
• 38:49
Speaker 5: they take those quality players, those players that that that
• 38:52
Speaker 5: have been developed by that smaller school, and they end
• 38:55
Speaker 5: up going to the bigger schools and building dynasties.
• 39:01
Speaker 3: And I think there was like a.
• 39:05
Speaker 4: Like maybe like a two or three hundred number of
• 39:09
Speaker 4: actual NIL players that have gone somewhere else.
• 39:13
Speaker 3: Sure, Just I mean, like now right, like to me.
• 39:22
Speaker 4: What is the stability of collegiate sports?
• 39:25
  Speaker 3: Like, like, I.
• 39:27
Speaker 4: Mean, are we can you get a team and say,
• 39:31
Speaker 4: oh I love this team. I you know all the
• 39:33
Speaker 4: way down to the sixth man, I you know, I
• 39:36
  Speaker 4: love this team.
• 39:36
Speaker 3: This team is solid.
• 39:38
Speaker 4: You have one season, right to enjoy that group, right,
• 39:44
Speaker 4: and as soon as that season gets remotely close to
• 39:49
Speaker 4: being over, three or four of those guys are going to.
• 39:53
Speaker 5: Be gone, right sure, because they're gonna go where there's
• 39:55
  Speaker 5: more money.
• 39:56
Speaker 3: They're gonna go where there's more money.
• 39:57
Speaker 5: And name, you know the name of this and you know, do.
• 40:01
Speaker 3: You think the name? Do you think the name matters
• 40:03
Speaker 3: or does the money matter?
• 40:04
  Speaker 4: Well?
• 40:04
  Speaker 5: I think I think it's a combination, Carl, because I
• 40:07
Speaker 5: mean they want a chance. I mean, if you're at
• 40:09
Speaker 5: a smaller school, what are the odds that you're going
• 40:12
Speaker 5: to make it in March Madness and make a deep run.
• 40:14
Speaker 5: Whereas if you're at one of those schools, why do
• 40:17
Speaker 5: not have a double bonus? Why not get the money
• 40:19
Speaker 5: and have a chance to make a run in March
• 40:22
Speaker 5: Madness in the national championship? To me, and they kind
• 40:26
Speaker 5: of go hand in hand.
• 40:27
Speaker 4: Anyway, here's what's interesting to me, and everything that you
• 40:31
Speaker 4: said is one correct. I'm sitting here and I'm thinking
• 40:37
Speaker 4: in my mind as you ask a question and answering it, right, Like,
• 40:42
Speaker 4: I'm thinking to myself, well, what am I thinking about?
• 40:46
Speaker 4: What would I be thinking about? I'm thinking about trying
• 40:49
Speaker 4: to get the Sunday right, I'm trying to play on Sunday.
• 40:53
Speaker 4: I didn't have the access to the money.
• 40:57
  Speaker 3: My access to.
• 40:58
Speaker 4: The money was being able to get to Right. We're
• 41:03
Speaker 4: we're paying kids now.
• 41:06
Speaker 3: Who they don't eat. So how do I motivate them
• 41:09
Speaker 3: to get to the NBA? You know what I'm saying.
• 41:12
Speaker 3: When you can make life.
• 41:15
Speaker 4: Changing money at the collegiate level, at the collegiate level,
• 41:18
Speaker 4: right and do nothing after.
• 41:20
Speaker 5: That, right, I mean like that could that could become
• 41:24
Speaker 5: a problem for professional sports in the long run. I
• 41:26
Speaker 5: mean I truly believe that because you think about it.
• 41:29
Speaker 5: I mean, if they can make that kind of, like
• 41:30
Speaker 5: you said, life changing money in their youth and they've
• 41:34
Speaker 5: got that money and they really you know, if they
• 41:37
Speaker 5: if they have risk for injury in the NFL, I
• 41:40
Speaker 5: mean other than the NOTORIETI I think a player would
• 41:42
Speaker 5: want to make it to the professional level for the notariate,
• 41:45
Speaker 5: but possibly in the future, it won't be for the money.
• 41:48
Speaker 3: And I'm going to make the case to to that point.
• 41:51
Speaker 4: There's going to be a ton of players who will
• 41:54
Speaker 4: make a bunch of money at the collegiate level, right
• 41:57
  Speaker 4: and not play.
• 41:58
Speaker 5: It exactly, That's what I'm saying.
• 42:00
Speaker 3: Other than that they don't have to. They won't have to,
• 42:03
Speaker 3: nor will they maybe even be good enough.
• 42:05
Speaker 5: Right, they won't have to, yep, or you're right, it
• 42:07
Speaker 5: won't matter. They'll have that money and they won't have
• 42:10
  Speaker 5: that motivation.
• 42:12
Speaker 3: How is that okay?
• 42:13
  Speaker 6: Like?
• 42:13
  Speaker 1: How is that?
• 42:14
Speaker 3: Like? How are we just okay with that?
• 42:18
  Speaker 4: I get a parent, I get a parent from a
• 42:21
Speaker 4: from a talented high school kid who's getting ready to
• 42:25
Speaker 4: go to college, and there's a bunch of people talking
• 42:28
  Speaker 4: about a bunch.
• 42:29
Speaker 3: Of money for him or her. I'm behind you, because, hey,
• 42:35
Speaker 3: the future, what the future? Right?
• 42:40
Speaker 4: But on the on on, on my on my professional
• 42:44
Speaker 4: athlete side, I look at it, and I'm thinking, you mean,
• 42:50
Speaker 4: if if I go back, if I could have gone
• 42:52
Speaker 4: back to Marshall and been one of the better players
• 42:56
Speaker 4: on our teams that were not very.
• 42:58
Speaker 3: Good, how much Nio money could I have made, and.
• 43:03
Speaker 4: Maybe now I don't have all the aches and pains.
• 43:07
Speaker 5: That come along when with the professional football league. I
• 43:12
Speaker 5: get it. Yeah, well, you know, I totally agree with
• 43:16
Speaker 5: everything you're saying too, Carl. But something I saw and
• 43:19
Speaker 5: I wish Hollis was still here, and I wanted to
• 43:21
Speaker 5: bring it up, but I know he had to go
• 43:24
Speaker 5: in that house spill twenty five seventy six. Something that
• 43:27
Speaker 5: caught my eye. It has to do with NI our
• 43:29
Speaker 5: discussion was allowing schools to keep nil deals private. This
• 43:35
Speaker 5: was part of the verbiage of this bill in West Virginia,
• 43:38
Speaker 5: and it also prevents other schools. What kind of the
• 43:42
Speaker 5: intent of it is to prevent other schools from outbidding
• 43:46
Speaker 5: for players. Now, I understand the intent of that. I
• 43:50
Speaker 5: understand trying to keep it private, but can you really
• 43:52
Speaker 5: keep it private? I mean other than maybe not release
• 43:55
Speaker 5: it immediately to the media. But if a school see
• 44:00
  Speaker 5: a player and he's a quality player, let's say, let's
• 44:03
Speaker 5: play along with WVU and and your Georgia Okay, okay,
• 44:07
Speaker 5: and you know he is he is just a perfect
• 44:10
Speaker 5: fit for your school. You're gonna find out one way
• 44:13
  Speaker 5: or the other where there's a will. There's a way
• 44:15
Speaker 5: you're gonna find out how much WVU is paying that player,
• 44:18
Speaker 5: so that you can obtain him on your on your terms,
• 44:21
  Speaker 5: with more money.
• 44:22
Speaker 3: Probably if if that's if that's my son.
• 44:25
Speaker 8: Yeah, and so WVU gave is going to give him
• 44:31
Speaker 8: two million, two million dollars, yes, you know, And all
• 44:35
Speaker 8: of a sudden here comes whoever, right, and they're saying,
• 44:42
Speaker 8: we think we got a good deal, you know, and
• 44:44
Speaker 8: we could really use yourself exactly, And.
• 44:48
Speaker 5: So that the outbidding thing. I mean, I understand the
• 44:51
Speaker 5: intent of it, but is that possible even? I mean,
• 44:53
Speaker 5: I think that's what's happening with March madness as we speak,
• 44:56
Speaker 5: with all these players going in the portal. You don't
• 44:58
Speaker 5: enter the portal unless you know where you're somebody's already
• 45:01
Speaker 5: somebody's already talked to you. Yes, you're not just going
• 45:03
Speaker 5: to enter the portal. Oh, let's see what happens here.
• 45:05
Speaker 5: You you have intent, you know where you're going.
• 45:08
Speaker 3: I do think that there are some.
• 45:11
Speaker 4: I'll call them kids, who jump into portal with the
• 45:14
Speaker 4: idea of let me see if I could get some bites.
• 45:17
  Speaker 5: I think it's a small percentage at.
• 45:19
  Speaker 3: A small percentage.
• 45:20
Speaker 4: But I think most of the players who are playing
• 45:23
Speaker 4: on another team, who go into the.
• 45:25
Speaker 5: Portal and are starting, and.
• 45:26
  Speaker 4: They're starting, there's a there's already been a conversation regardless
• 45:31
Speaker 4: of whether or not you see.
• 45:33
Speaker 5: Give that money up. I mean, whatever you're getting paid,
• 45:35
Speaker 5: if you're a starter at Saint John's or whatever basketball team,
• 45:39
Speaker 5: you're not going to give up what you have. And
• 45:41
Speaker 5: they go to the portal and go to the portal
• 45:43
Speaker 5: unless you have a better deal.
• 45:46
  Speaker 3: That you've got a better.
• 45:47
  Speaker 5: So I don't know how. I mean, I understand that
• 45:50
Speaker 5: you know, and maybe Hollis can verify that for me.
• 45:52
Speaker 5: But I did read that online and I thought to myself,
• 45:54
Speaker 5: I understand the intent of it, but is it possible.
• 45:57
  Speaker 5: I don't know if that's possible.
• 45:58
  Speaker 4: I don't I don't know how you can. I don't
• 46:01
Speaker 4: know how you can keep contracts like that quiet.
• 46:06
Speaker 3: I mean, where is it? Where is it that it's quiet? Yeah?
• 46:10
Speaker 4: And actually in the NFL it used to be quote quiet,
• 46:13
Speaker 4: like you go in, you sign your contract and nobody
• 46:16
Speaker 4: really is supposed to quote supposed to know. Well, within
• 46:21
Speaker 4: within a couple of days, everybody knows what your contract is.
• 46:25
Speaker 5: Sure, how that happened.
• 46:27
  Speaker 3: I didn't say anything.
• 46:28
Speaker 4: I didn't tell anybody, right, but now all of a sudden,
• 46:31
Speaker 4: guys now think, oh, well he got fifty dollars, I deserve.
• 46:35
Speaker 5: One hundred, right right.
• 46:37
Speaker 4: There's just no to me, there's two roadways being able
• 46:41
Speaker 4: to keep that private or quiet or whatever you want
• 46:44
  Speaker 4: to call it.
• 46:44
Speaker 5: There need to there needs to be more oversight of
• 46:48
Speaker 5: this whole portal, of the of the nil contracts, all
• 46:51
Speaker 5: the things. There has to be some rules. I think
• 46:55
Speaker 5: there was a clip that maybe you shared in our group,
• 46:57
Speaker 5: Carl about It was a sport commentator talking about maybe
• 47:02
Speaker 5: a way to possibly remedy these situations with these players leaving,
• 47:08
Speaker 5: you know, from one school to another to another and
• 47:10
Speaker 5: not staying is to make a contract two years long
• 47:14
Speaker 5: rather than just one, because then they have to fulfill
• 47:17
Speaker 5: at least the whole season and they can't just jump
• 47:19
Speaker 5: ship and take the money with them.
• 47:21
Speaker 3: I think I think that's the only real way.
• 47:26
  Speaker 4: There isn't like a Okay, all right, so you're you're
• 47:30
Speaker 4: you're coming in as a freshman, I'm giving you.
• 47:34
  Speaker 3: A million dollars.
• 47:36
Speaker 4: To to to to play basketball, right, Okay, Well you
• 47:41
Speaker 4: do exactly what we thought you were going to do.
• 47:45
Speaker 3: But now after your first year, you're ready. You you
• 47:49
  Speaker 3: were so.
• 47:50
Speaker 4: Good, everybody's trying to trying to get you to come
• 47:53
Speaker 4: to their place. Well, now I've got a bid for
• 47:56
Speaker 4: you again. Yeah, and and and I'm lose. So to
• 48:02
Speaker 4: your to the concept of you can't have a one
• 48:05
Speaker 4: year deal, right, you gotta have you gotta have either
• 48:10
  Speaker 4: a two.
• 48:10
Speaker 5: Year exactly at least at least.
• 48:13
Speaker 4: A two year deal and a max. So let's say
• 48:16
Speaker 4: you really want to do the money, you got to
• 48:18
Speaker 4: say you do a mix of three years, right, So
• 48:21
Speaker 4: now in three years for you to leave your last
• 48:24
Speaker 4: year makes no sense.
• 48:26
Speaker 3: Okay, But but depending on whether the team is.
• 48:29
Speaker 5: You I was gonna say it depends, but at.
• 48:31
Speaker 4: Least you get I get you for three years, right,
• 48:34
Speaker 4: and guarantee I can lock you up for three years,
• 48:36
  Speaker 4: so I don't have to.
• 48:37
Speaker 5: Worry about it. And that's really gonna benefit these smaller scoes,
• 48:40
Speaker 5: really will because what happens is when they get good
• 48:42
Speaker 5: and they build a team and they develop players, immediately
• 48:46
Speaker 5: those kids are snatched up by it. Like I said,
• 48:48
Speaker 5: it's become a farm league. It's a farm league like baseball.
• 48:51
Speaker 4: And let me let me make that picture even clearer
• 48:55
Speaker 4: for people. So you're gonna send your kid to me,
• 49:01
Speaker 4: I'm going to pour everything into him or her trying.
• 49:05
Speaker 3: To get them to be the best player.
• 49:08
Speaker 5: They can be well rounded, well rounded.
• 49:11
Speaker 4: Student athlete, the picture perfect student athlete.
• 49:14
Speaker 3: Sure, so I get that accomplished. He or she's playing
• 49:20
Speaker 3: playing well, clearly has a future.
• 49:25
Speaker 4: And all of a sudden, you come in and you say, well, coach,
• 49:28
Speaker 4: thank you for everything that you've done. I be really
• 49:31
Speaker 4: really appreciated. But I think what we're gonna do is
• 49:34
  Speaker 4: we're going to.
• 49:35
Speaker 3: Go to Florida. Yeah exactly, and we're gonna play for them.
• 49:39
Speaker 5: Or you have to pay the money back one or
• 49:42
Speaker 5: the others. Either if you sign a long contract at
• 49:44
Speaker 5: least two years with the school or wherever you're going
• 49:47
Speaker 5: at least two years, or you give back your in
• 49:52
Speaker 5: I own money or whatever it was your compensation.
• 49:54
Speaker 3: I'll even make the case.
• 49:55
  Speaker 4: So let's say, let's say I give you I'll give
• 49:58
Speaker 4: you a hundred thousand dollars as a as a freshman. It's
• 50:01
Speaker 4: true freshman, one hundred thousand dollars, which you probably will
• 50:05
  Speaker 4: turn down.
• 50:06
Speaker 3: But I'm gonna give you a hundred.
• 50:08
Speaker 5: Buch of my mind. But yes, but one hundred.
• 50:10
Speaker 3: Thousand dollars, you play X number of games, right, will
• 50:17
Speaker 3: add to that if you win.
• 50:19
Speaker 8: If you win, maybe you got for this incent in
• 50:23
Speaker 8: base Yes, I like it.
• 50:25
Speaker 3: You know, because that's how the league used to be.
• 50:29
Speaker 5: If we're going that route, we might as well like
• 50:31
Speaker 5: model after that route. Absolutely, contracts and all, so you
• 50:34
Speaker 5: could even have a cap.
• 50:35
Speaker 4: You could get a hundred, you could get one hundred
• 50:37
Speaker 4: thousand dollars could be your contract, and then you have
• 50:39
Speaker 4: these incentives that you have.
• 50:42
Speaker 5: To reach right to get the rest of your money, to.
• 50:44
Speaker 3: Get the rest of your money. And if you don't
• 50:46
  Speaker 3: reach them.
• 50:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, now the one bad, the worst one, let's just
• 50:51
  Speaker 4: say for basketball.
• 50:53
Speaker 3: Would be points point score.
• 50:56
Speaker 5: Oh well, you couldn't go because.
• 50:58
Speaker 4: Because now you get the challenge in the and that
• 51:01
Speaker 4: is I'm going into the in the last week of
• 51:04
Speaker 4: the game and I'm twenty five points short.
• 51:08
Speaker 3: I'm shooting until I get twenty.
• 51:09
Speaker 5: Yeah, you couldn't do it in basketball that way.
• 51:11
Speaker 3: I mean, but there's just there has to be something.
• 51:15
Speaker 5: Better than what we have.
• 51:18
  Speaker 3: That's what we have, and I just I really don't
• 51:21
Speaker 3: know what it is.
• 51:22
Speaker 5: And and I'll tell you, like I said earlier, this
• 51:25
Speaker 5: was eye opening to me when I saw the available
• 51:28
Speaker 5: you know, monies for student athletes. And this is just
• 51:31
Speaker 5: in the state of West Virginia. When you see that
• 51:34
Speaker 5: WU has twenty point five million compared to Marshall's one
• 51:39
Speaker 5: point five, right, I mean, you think about that, and
• 51:42
Speaker 5: you think about these large Ohio state Georgia, think about
• 51:46
Speaker 5: the money is available to them if WVU has I
• 51:48
Speaker 5: mean I thought that was a large amount. Actually I
• 51:51
Speaker 5: didn't expect that amount for WVU, so that was kind
• 51:54
Speaker 5: of like eye opening for me. But then I think,
• 51:57
Speaker 5: you know, WU is not on the same level some
• 52:00
Speaker 5: of these you know, National champ big you know, the
• 52:03
Speaker 5: the SEC. And I'm not saying they're not great. They are.
• 52:06
  Speaker 5: I mean, I love w I don't want people to
• 52:07
Speaker 5: take that the wrong way, and I love Marshall as well,
• 52:10
Speaker 5: but I'm saying, you think about those teams that are
• 52:12
Speaker 5: on a different level as far as Notre Dames, with
• 52:15
Speaker 5: their with their alumni, with with with their fan base,
• 52:19
Speaker 5: all of that, you know, just the sheer numbers that
• 52:21
Speaker 5: these other people or these other teams have behind them.
• 52:24
Speaker 5: It blows my mind to think how much, especially these
• 52:26
Speaker 5: private schools that don't have to don't have to tip,
• 52:28
Speaker 5: they don't have to tell us.
• 52:30
Speaker 4: And again to your point, the difference in just the
• 52:32
Speaker 4: difference in Marshall and WU speaks.
• 52:35
  Speaker 3: Volumes of.
• 52:38
Speaker 4: What what's the difference between WU and Alabama?
• 52:42
Speaker 5: That's what I mean. Yeah, yeah, so that that that
• 52:45
Speaker 5: is to me just you can't even imagine, you know,
• 52:47
  Speaker 5: And and I don't know. I don't know how you
• 52:51
  Speaker 5: regulate that like it's it doesn't I don't know how
• 52:54
Speaker 5: you regulate the money. I mean, it'll never be unless
• 52:59
Speaker 5: you regulate it. I l because like we said, the
• 53:01
Speaker 5: Marshall remember the ninety nineties with the Marshall teams that
• 53:04
Speaker 5: we had back that those would never have existed. They
• 53:07
Speaker 5: would have never They would have been destroyed within their
• 53:10
Speaker 5: first year or two.
• 53:11
Speaker 3: Everybody would have been gone. They would have been gone.
• 53:14
Speaker 5: Chad Pennington, Randy Moss. There's no way.
• 53:18
Speaker 4: Randy Moss plays one year at Marshall and he's gone
• 53:22
  Speaker 4: to wherever.
• 53:22
Speaker 3: They are all sure team or the highest bidding team is.
• 53:27
Speaker 5: Why wouldn't Why wouldn't he all of them? Chad Pennington,
• 53:30
Speaker 5: all of them? You think about all the great quarterbacks
• 53:33
Speaker 5: that came through Marshall, They would they would have been
• 53:35
Speaker 5: there one year, one and done one and done.
• 53:37
Speaker 4: And and you and you and you create a situation
• 53:42
Speaker 4: to where now your history what you what your history
• 53:45
  Speaker 4: could have been?
• 53:47
  Speaker 5: Yeah, it's now gone, right, And that's what that's what's
• 53:50
  Speaker 5: happening now.
• 53:51
Speaker 3: It is and I don't and it's getting.
• 53:54
Speaker 5: I don't want to say boring, but March Madness was
• 53:59
Speaker 5: not as much fun this year as it was five
• 54:03
Speaker 5: ten years ago because especially if your team didn't like
• 54:06
Speaker 5: w didn't get invited, So that was kind of a downer. Anyway.
• 54:09
Speaker 5: We knew Marshall didn't have a chance, but you know,
• 54:11
Speaker 5: we really didn't have a home team to broot for.
• 54:13
Speaker 5: So when you go into March Madness, you're kind of
• 54:15
Speaker 5: picking out this cinderellas, you know, like you want those
• 54:18
Speaker 5: number sixteams and right for you know, just to give
• 54:21
Speaker 5: them a shot to win, you know, and hopefully have
• 54:23
Speaker 5: somebody to make it exciting. And that just didn't happen
• 54:27
  Speaker 5: this year.
• 54:27
Speaker 3: And it's and and and.
• 54:30
Speaker 4: Making the point it's it's not gonna be possible because
• 54:35
Speaker 4: you're not even on those teams. They're not gonna be
• 54:39
Speaker 4: that good player that's gonna stay around Now long enough.
• 54:43
Speaker 5: Even if they do, they're gone.
• 54:44
Speaker 3: They're gonna be gone.
• 54:45
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, you're you're not gonna be able to
• 54:47
Speaker 4: hold two or three players on age.
• 54:49
Speaker 5: And it's gonna happen the same in college football, car
• 54:52
Speaker 5: it is. It's gonna be the same teams every year
• 54:54
Speaker 5: competing for the national championship. It almost is now, it
• 54:57
Speaker 5: almost is now. It's a rotation.
• 55:00
Speaker 3: Hold me to this.
• 55:02
Speaker 4: When we start getting into next season and you start
• 55:06
Speaker 4: looking to who's gone where you know because of inn
• 55:12
  Speaker 4: I L.
• 55:12
Speaker 3: Right, what's gonna happen is.
• 55:16
Speaker 4: The teams that you thought going into the season was
• 55:19
Speaker 4: going to be good, but they're not going to have
• 55:22
Speaker 4: the players because those players are going to go wherever
• 55:25
  Speaker 4: the money is.
• 55:27
Speaker 5: Yes, that's that's the trend, it seems so we'll see that.
• 55:32
Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, we clearly you know where we
• 55:37
Speaker 4: stand when it comes to in I L and all
• 55:39
Speaker 4: of that kind of stuff. It's just crazy. But we've
• 55:44
Speaker 4: got to get out of here. We our time is up,
• 55:47
Speaker 4: all right. We will look forward to seeing it again.
• 55:50
Speaker 4: Thank you, see you later.
• 55:52
Speaker 5: See you later. Thanks guys.
