- 0:29Okay, well, we're going to Colossians chapter 1 tonight.
- 0:33And before we do, I wanted to read you a poem by Lynelle Johnson called A Good News Day.
- 0:41It's a good news day, no blues day, new shoes, no way to lose, what a good news day.
- 0:48It's a great day, I can't wait day, lift your voice, let's rejoice, my lord, a good news day.
- 0:54It's a pay day going my way day no nay all yay what you say such a good news day.
- 1:03It's a live it up day overflowing cup day
- 1:06it's a bright and bubbly doubly lovely show enough good news day i think that
- 1:13sets the heart of colossians so we go to verse one paul an apostle of jesus
- 1:19Christ by the will of God and Timotheus, our brother.
- 1:24First of all, it's Paul again writing to the believers.
- 1:28He was the one that fathered them in the word, that started the movement of
- 1:32the word in that province of Asia, and Colossae was a part of that province.
- 1:37Remember, he spent two years and three months in Asia, in which all the word
- 1:42heard, all of Asia heard the word of the And that means Colossians,
- 1:47the Colossians had to hear about it too during that time.
- 1:51And it says an apostle, he was an apostle or one who is sent.
- 1:56An apostle is one who is sent to bring new light to a generation.
- 2:01It may be old light, but it's new to that generation.
- 2:06And of course, the things that were revealed to Paul at this time that he brought
- 2:10to the people regarding the mystery had never been made known before.
- 2:16And therefore, it was totally new light to that generation.
- 2:20And it says an apostle of Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ is the correct order.
- 2:26It's not Christ Jesus, because an apostle is one who serves.
- 2:30And whenever it's in the category of service or the context of service,
- 2:35it will put Jesus the humiliated one first followed by Christ the glorified
- 2:41one otherwise it would put the glorified one first Christ Jesus but in this
- 2:48context it's service he's an apostle so he's an apostle of whom?
- 2:53Of Jesus Christ putting the emphasis on
- 2:56the humiliated one or the service an
- 3:00apostle of Jesus Christ or as we translated it
- 3:03jesus christ apostle by the
- 3:06will of god the word will is that
- 3:10greek word the lama t-h-e l long e m-a the lama and it means the intense desire
- 3:19there's another word that means absolute determination but this is not it this
- 3:24is not that word for will in the sense of absolutely determining something.
- 3:29It's the intense desire.
- 3:32Now, determination could also be included, but the emphasis is on God's intense desire.
- 3:41That's how he became an apostle.
- 3:43Not because you wanted to, or I wanted to, or because Paul wanted to.
- 3:48That's not how you get a ministry. It's because because of God's intense desire,
- 3:53he knows what the needs are, and he's working in your heart to will and to do
- 3:58of his good pleasure, and as long as you don't have your foot on the hose, God can work with you.
- 4:04But you've got to get your foot off the hose sometimes. So, by the will,
- 4:09the intense desire of God.
- 4:13And, Timotheus, an apostle? No. Timotheus, a brother. A brother,
- 4:20power is in italics, a brother, he's not here referred to as an apostle,
- 4:25but he was simply one of the brothers.
- 4:28I think that is significant.
- 4:32Because, first of all, Paul was a Judean in background.
- 4:38Timothy, his father, was a Greek. His mother was a Judean, but his father,
- 4:43the bloodline, was a Greek.
- 4:46So you have both a Judean and a Gentile, a Greek in background.
- 4:53Writing, and they're writing with unity of purpose because of the one body that brought them together.
- 5:01And what's the context of colossians the
- 5:04mystery the one body and the big problem
- 5:08is not holding the head who is
- 5:10christ so here's timothy
- 5:14a greek basically in background because
- 5:17of his father and paul a judean
- 5:21in background writing together to the
- 5:25colossians and it's one body the mystery
- 5:28that'll become more significant later and he's
- 5:32a brother a brother paul was
- 5:36the apostle he was the one that fathered them in the word timothy was a brother
- 5:41and yet they learned many things from timothy later on in first timothy paul
- 5:47says he sent him back to asia to ordain certain people and do a lot of things,
- 5:54get things running in order in Asia,
- 5:56because Timothy was one of the tremendous leaders at that time.
- 6:02But Timothy, he's here called a brother.
- 6:06I think of this in many of our lives. Dr. Werwell's the one that fathered all of us in the Word, right?
- 6:14But I'm not your father, or Reverend Martindale, or others in the ministry,
- 6:19other leaders. We're brothers.
- 6:22We're brothers, and I've always looked on the core as my brothers.
- 6:26I certainly don't look at you as my children.
- 6:30A whole different situation. But you've got one father in a family,
- 6:35but you've got many brothers.
- 6:37And maybe I'm a little older brother, been around a little longer,
- 6:41and sometimes you can learn from your older brother, sometimes you fight with your older brothers.
- 6:46But that's neither here nor there. The relationship is different, understand?
- 6:55Same way with our other leaders. we're
- 6:58more like brothers and some of them if you know if they're your leader they
- 7:02may be an older brother in the body so i think it's a tremendous title for timothy
- 7:09here because you need that father and you need that brother that you work with
- 7:13and it's one body now to the saints,
- 7:18and faithful brethren in christ which are at colossi the word saints is that
- 7:25word that means means holy or a separated one.
- 7:29One who is set apart. He's separated, set apart.
- 7:34He's holy. That's what the word holy means.
- 7:38And the word faithful means one who believes.
- 7:43In Aramaic, literally it says a believing one.
- 7:48One who believes or believing you could translate it.
- 7:52A faithful person is one who is believing. I'm not an unbeliever,
- 7:57but he's believing to the point that he is faithful, he's steadfast.
- 8:03He continues to believe in his walk.
- 8:06And then it says, brothers. This is the only church epistle that addresses them
- 8:14as brothers in the opening salutation.
- 8:18Now remember in the book of Galatians, it called them brothers a number of times,
- 8:23times, but not in the opening salutation.
- 8:25This is the only epistle that addresses them as brothers in the opening salutation,
- 8:34because they were brothers, like Timothy was a brother.
- 8:40They were all part of that one body, and God is the Father, but we're all brothers.
- 8:49In addition to that, the word separated one and believing, both are adjectives which modify brothers.
- 8:59Now you don't get that from the King James where it says saints,
- 9:03but if you translated it holy or set apart, then you'd get that idea.
- 9:09These are holy and faithful brothers or set apart and believing brothers.
- 9:17See that?
- 9:19In Christ.
- 9:22Many of the manuscripts in Greek read, In Christ Jesus.
- 9:30The Aramaic reads, In Jesus Christ.
- 9:34But the Aramaic normally uses that phrase for, In Christ Jesus,
- 9:40because of their language.
- 9:42Very seldom, I think only four or five times, you see the order Christ Jesus in the Aramaic.
- 9:49But that's because of their language. They wouldn't do it that way as a rule.
- 9:53But here you have in Christ Jesus in many of the manuscripts,
- 10:00and I believe that that's what it should be because Ephesians 1.1 starts out
- 10:06with Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God,
- 10:10to the saints and to the faithful in Christ Jesus.
- 10:17Philippians also, chapter 1.
- 10:22Starts out, Paul and Timothy, it's the servants of Jesus Christ to all the saints in Christ Jesus.
- 10:30I think all three of these are addressed to those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 10:39In other words, it's more than just that they're born again.
- 10:44They're getting more than the foundational doctrine. They're getting the advanced class,
- 10:50which reminds me that advanced class is
- 10:53just the best class in the world today i think um
- 10:57every time i see those things
- 11:00it just blows my mind besides that it's funny you know it's better than watching
- 11:09any movie or anything else i mean
- 11:13it's got everything in it besides the greatness of God's Word and truth.
- 11:17And boy, it teaches you the principles of walking by the Spirit.
- 11:21Absolutely tremendous.
- 11:23Well, anyway, this was the advanced class of their time.
- 11:29Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians. And they're not addressed to the neophyte.
- 11:34They're not addressed to the newly born-again believer that needs the foundational doctrine.
- 11:40They're addressed to those that are holy, set
- 11:44apart and faithful in christ jesus they're
- 11:48identified with christ jesus and
- 11:52they're in fellowship with him they're not just you
- 11:55know tagging along or just having to get excited
- 11:58and now they moved into the fellowship but they're really steadfast in the fellowship
- 12:03they're in christ jesus identified with him that's why all three of these epistles
- 12:11must start with that title or with that phrase in Christ Jesus.
- 12:21Then it says, Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 12:31In the Aramaic, it reverses these. Peace and grace. Just like it did in Ephesians.
- 12:38Ephesians is peace and grace.
- 12:42And there's a reason, I'm not sure I understand all the greatness of it,
- 12:47But the end product of this great knowledge of the mystery,
- 12:53where it's one body, neither Judean nor Gentile, is that there's peace in the body.
- 13:01Ephesians chapter 2 dwells so much on that peace.
- 13:06There's no longer a division between Judean and Gentile, but God's broken down
- 13:12that middle wall of partition, making what? Peace. Peace.
- 13:17And not only peace with each other, but peace with whom? With God.
- 13:23Ephesians chapter 2, you ought to read it sometime. Peace.
- 13:27And it's because of the grace. And that grace is what makes it available.
- 13:34But peace is the big thing in the one body.
- 13:40And that's what Ephesians and Colossians is all about, the great doctrine of the mystery.
- 13:47Philippians simply corrects the practical error. But Colossians,
- 13:51the doctrinal error, and Ephesians sets the doctrine.
- 13:55So, peace and grace is good enough for me in both of those epistles.
- 14:03And it's the only two epistles that invert that. Everything else else, grace and peace.
- 14:10From God our Father. The phrase, and the Lord Jesus Christ is not in the Aramaic
- 14:19and most of the critical Greek texts.
- 14:26I think it's fantastic that it's omitted.
- 14:32Because in every other epistle, that's what you would see as the normal greeting.
- 14:38At least most of them. I haven't checked every one, but I know it's the normal
- 14:42greeting that you would say, grace to you and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 14:51That is the normal salutation. But why is it so tremendous that it's left off here?
- 15:00Well, Well, the problem at Colossae was they were not holding the head, right?
- 15:08They were not holding the head who is Jesus Christ.
- 15:15So then you would think there would be a reason to put it in here twice.
- 15:18Well, there's that figure ellipsis. I call this an ellipsis of the salutation,
- 15:25where you deliberately leave out something that the people would be expected are expecting to hear.
- 15:34In other words, if you're used to hearing me saying, well, grace and peace to
- 15:38you through God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, and all of a sudden I
- 15:42say, grace and peace to you through God the Father,
- 15:47what's your mind doing?
- 15:53What's your mind doing?
- 15:57It's saying, come on, tell me the rest of it, right?
- 16:01See? It's a deliberate omission. It's like, you know, music.
- 16:08Did you ever hear somebody play a song and leave the last note off?
- 16:12What's your mind doing? Go, come on, give it to me.
- 16:17You want that last note, right? Well, you want this. It's an ellipsis of the salutation.
- 16:25Because they were not holding the head, Christ, christ therefore it draws attention
- 16:30to it by leaving it out because they were leaving it out,
- 16:35now isn't that something boy i think that's terrific,
- 16:40so anyway we translate these first two verses here paul jesus christ apostle
- 16:47by god's will and Timothy, a brother,
- 16:53to the set-apart and believing brothers in Christ Jesus at Colossae.
- 17:01Peace and grace to you from God our Father.
- 17:06Period. End of greeting, salutation. Now verse 3 begins the prayer. 3 through 8.
- 17:19We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you.
- 17:25First of all, it says we give thanks. Now that isn't what he normally says.
- 17:31Look at Ephesians 1, verse 15.
- 17:39Wherefore, I also, after I heard of your believing in the Lord Jesus Jesus and
- 17:44love unto all the saints cease not to give thanks for you. Who does?
- 17:51I do. I do. I, Paul, I. Is that we?
- 17:57No, it's I. Now look at Philippians 1.
- 18:02Verse 3. I thank my God upon every member to you. Who does? I do.
- 18:10Paul. yet in colossians
- 18:14he says we do we give
- 18:18thanks we who paul and timothy paul and timothy a judean in background and a
- 18:27greek in background who are now one body part of the one body see it we give thanks to God.
- 18:37Boy, oh boy, oh boy. You talk about the accuracy of
- 18:40words and in this epistle we're not holding the head part of the mystery that
- 18:47doctrinal problem what better way to say things than what has been said right
- 18:55here in these opening verses. We give thanks.
- 18:59We do. Terrific.
- 19:03And the word and the father of
- 19:06all ages that word and is omitted in many manuscripts and in the Aramaic.
- 19:14Praying always for you. The word always, in the Greek and Aramaic,
- 19:21Greek is questionable, Aramaic sets it more beautifully, but in both of them,
- 19:26it could and should go with giving thanks rather than praying.
- 19:32We give thanks always, or continually, not continuously.
- 19:37Continuously means you give thanks and pray when you're supposed to be praying,
- 19:41Not every moment of the day. You can't be doing that, folks.
- 19:48Your mind isn't made to do that. Right now, you better be writing and listening.
- 19:54You can pray when I'm telling jokes.
- 20:03If I get any. All right. Always means continually.
- 20:09Not continuously. and it modifies we give thanks, not praying.
- 20:17Praying, in turn, then also modifies the giving of thanks, and it shows you
- 20:24how we give thanks, by praying.
- 20:30So, that verse we translate, we give thanks continually to God,
- 20:36the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Christ praying for you,
- 20:41but that's not the end of the sentence.
- 20:46Now we go to verse 4. Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the
- 20:53love which you have to all the saints.
- 20:56Now this verse 4 is not a continuation of that sentence.
- 21:02It's a short parenthesis that's thrown in that's incomplete in itself and that
- 21:11type of parenthesis is called an epitrechon you know that one?
- 21:19E-P-I-T-R-E-C-H-O-N epitrechon,
- 21:26E-P-I-T-R-E-C-H-O-N It's a short parenthesis, incomplete by itself.
- 21:41Therefore, whatever verse 3 was saying, praying for you, will be continued then in verse 5.
- 21:49Because this is a sideline.
- 21:53Since we heard or having heard of your faith which is believing in Christ Jesus.
- 22:03Now, two of the manuscripts have in the Lord Jesus and the Aramaic has in Jesus
- 22:10Christ again, Again, but as I told you before, that's because of their language.
- 22:14Normally that would just be in Christ Jesus.
- 22:19And again, these are the faithful in Christ Jesus.
- 22:23And so, this is not referring just to when they first believed.
- 22:31Like you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, then that title would be appropriate.
- 22:35Appropriate but this is
- 22:39he heard of their believing which was
- 22:43in christ jesus that which set
- 22:47them apart as the more mature believers and of the love to all the saints their
- 22:57love to all the saints in other words they weren't again neophytes but they
- 23:03had and when paul had heard Heard about this.
- 23:05What did he do? He continued to thank God.
- 23:10Praying for them.
- 23:15You'll see more of this when we get to verse 5. I want to tell you also that,
- 23:20the word love is agape, the love of God in the renewed mind in manifestation.
- 23:29And that the Aramaic adds the word your in front of love.
- 23:35Your love to all the saints, which is interesting because many of the Greek
- 23:41text adds the words that are in italics in a King James Version, which you have.
- 23:48That would be another way of saying your, the love which you have,
- 23:52or your love to all the saints.
- 23:56So I believe that is correct to add that there.
- 24:01So we parenthesis, having heard of your believing which is in Christ Jesus and
- 24:12your love to all those who are set apart.
- 24:18The saints, of course, are the set-apart ones. He still could have been there, right?
- 24:23We covered this last week, but not on this particular verse.
- 24:27But he heard about their believing in Christ Jesus. It was more than just believing
- 24:33in the Lord Jesus, just getting saved.
- 24:35But they, Christ Jesus, they were steadfast.
- 24:39And where did he hear that from? Well, verse 7 says,
- 24:43As ye also learned of Epaphras, our
- 24:47dear fellow servant who is for you a faithful minister
- 24:50of christ it was epiphras who taught
- 24:54him the advanced class paul could still
- 24:57have taught him the foundational things he could have been there no problem
- 25:00with that but at least epiphras was the one that taught him the greatness of
- 25:05god's word regarding the mystery and so on and what caused them to believe you
- 25:12know get settled in and they're believing in Him.
- 25:15He loved the saints with the love of God. He's the one that worked with them. Epaphras did.
- 25:22So it doesn't prove anything as far as whether Paul was there or not.
- 25:29All right. As a matter of fact, Ephesians 1.15, we read it.
- 25:35It says, Wherefore I also, after I heard of your believing Believing in the
- 25:41Lord Jesus and loved unto all the saints. Hey, wasn't Paul at Ephesus?
- 25:46Oh, if it says I heard about it, that doesn't mean Paul wasn't there. We know he was there.
- 25:52Because of the hope, or for the hope, which is laid up for you in heaven,
- 25:58whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel.
- 26:07Let me ask you a question. Is this thing cutting in and out or just my ears?
- 26:13So I got to yell once in a while so you can hear me. I'll do my best.
- 26:19Okay, for, the word for.
- 26:23In verse 5. It indicates the cause for thanks and prayer in verse 3.
- 26:35This word for indicates the cause,
- 26:39for their thanks and prayer in verse 3 and can be translated because of in both
- 26:49the Greek and Aramaic and this verse clearly defines what hope is.
- 26:58Hope is for the future hope
- 27:01which is laid up for you if something is laid up for you then it's not available
- 27:08now is it it's something you anticipate in the future hope anticipates the word
- 27:16laid up means stored Stored,
- 27:18stored for you in heaven.
- 27:24Now, the word heaven is plural, heavens, but that's because of the Hebrew idiom
- 27:31or the Semitic idiom where they would many times call things of great magnitude by the plural.
- 27:39It doesn't mean you've got several heavens.
- 27:41It means you can't talk about heaven in the singular because it's so big.
- 27:45Same way God is Elohim doesn't mean he's more than one God it just means he's
- 27:51so big you can't describe him in the singular it's a figure.
- 27:59So it's heavens, but literally it means heaven in our language.
- 28:06Whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel.
- 28:11Now that is called a dual genitive, because you have two genitives there.
- 28:16The word of the truth of the gospel. See that? Two ofs.
- 28:23It's a dual genitive, and those are rare. they're more common in Ephesians and
- 28:30Colossians than in any other epistle.
- 28:34You'll see other figures used in or emphasized in other epistles in Ephesians and Colossians.
- 28:43This is one of the unique idioms of the language or usages in the language to
- 28:51use that dual genitive for emphasis. Ephesus.
- 28:56It's the word of the truth of the gospel.
- 29:04Now, the word is the truth, right? It's the true word.
- 29:10The word is the truth. And the word is the good news, the gospel.
- 29:17So we translated it, the true word, the good news.
- 29:23The no blues, new shoes.
- 29:29That's what inspired me on that poem tonight. And it'll tie in. It's a good news.
- 29:37No blues, new shoes. Well, every day is a good news day when you're in the Word.
- 29:45And it's not just Word, it's the true Word.
- 29:48See, true describes that same Word in another way. and good news describes it in a third way.
- 29:59See, the emphasis and the impact.
- 30:04To get the sense of verse 5 now, start with verse 3 and skip 4 because of the epitrarch on there.
- 30:16We give thanks continually to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 30:23praying for you because of the hope which is stored in heaven for you.
- 30:29We give thanks. We give thanks. Praying for you because of the hope which is
- 30:36stored in heaven for you.
- 30:38What is the hope that's stored for you? Well, it's your internal life,
- 30:42your inheritance that goes with that internal life. And it's the reward.
- 30:48It's the rewards too. Because verse 4, that epitrechon, that short deviation or side issue.
- 31:00Explains having heard of your
- 31:02believing in Christ Jesus and your love to all those who are set apart.
- 31:10They were faithful. They had great love for the people.
- 31:16They had great believing in Christ Jesus.
- 31:19So would there be rewards?
- 31:22Sure. It just explains that a little bit more.
- 31:26See? If you haven't heard about somebody, would you pray for them? Well, you couldn't.
- 31:33But when you hear about them, and the more you hear about them,
- 31:36the more they come to your mind, the more you lift them, and throughout the
- 31:40day, God brings somebody remembrance, or you just remember them,
- 31:44and you pray for them, and see?
- 31:50And it's because of the hope. And their hope was more than eternal life.
- 31:54It included the rewards.
- 31:57Because of the word, the good news.
- 32:04They had already heard about this hope.
- 32:07They had already heard about it when Epaphras was there, and perhaps Paul too.
- 32:14But they had heard about the great hope they have in the true word, the good news.
- 32:24Since the day ye heard of it and knew the grace of God in truth,
- 32:29as ye have also learned of Epaphras, our dear fellow servant who is for you
- 32:35a faithful minister in Christ.
- 32:39First of all, the words is come. In the Greek, that's exactly what it means.
- 32:46But in the Aramaic, it's that word kroz, K-R-A-Z, kroz.
- 32:55Keras, I guess you pronounce it, there's a schwa in there, keras, means to preach.
- 33:02It's like kairuso in Greek, only kairuso is not used here in Greek.
- 33:08To preach, to proclaim,
- 33:12which is preached unto you,
- 33:18as it is in all the world. the word an is omitted in many texts and brings forth fruit.
- 33:33Most of the critical Greek texts add a phrase after that,
- 33:41it adds a word auxano a-u-x-a-n long o Oxano, what does it mean?
- 33:53Right. To grow. To increase like a plant grows. It greens.
- 34:01Greens out, or whatever you call it. It's growing. Growing.
- 34:09George Jess always uses the illustrations of trees and animals because he works with them so much.
- 34:17But Jesus Christ evidently did too, because he used a lot of illustrations of
- 34:22trees and plants and animals in his teaching. But they make great illustrations.
- 34:28Here's one using the tree. The tree grows and it bears fruit every year.
- 34:36A tree greens out, it grows a little bigger, and it produces what?
- 34:40Fruit. And if it stops producing fruit, Might as well get out the axe and have
- 34:45yourself firewood, right?
- 34:47But as long as it keeps growing and bearing fruit, those two things, you've got a good tree.
- 34:55Well, that word, the true word, the good news with no blue,
- 35:02is preached unto you as it is in all the world, and it brings forth fruit and
- 35:10growth. Growth. It grows.
- 35:16As it does, well, brings forth fruit and grows where?
- 35:22What was the last thing we left off? In all the world.
- 35:27Then as it doth also in you, now he brings it back to you.
- 35:34What you have here is a beautiful introversion. A, B, B, A.
- 35:41You see, which has come to you or has preached to you, as in all the world, you, the world.
- 35:51Then it bringeth forth fruit, where?
- 35:53In the world, as it does in you.
- 35:56So it goes, preached to you, the word, the true word, the good news,
- 36:02was preached to you, it's preached to the world.
- 36:05So it brings forth fruit and growth in the world and in you. Isn't that beautiful?
- 36:12Beautiful chiastic structure or introversion.
- 36:19ABBA.
- 36:22So
- 36:26It's not just at Colossae, but it's the word over the world.
- 36:33It's the word or reaching the world with the word, Word, which depends on cries, preaching, go tell.
- 36:45Great theme verse, isn't it? The true Word, the good news, which is preached
- 36:54to you as in all the world.
- 36:58Reaching the world with the Word, go tell. And what happens when you do reach
- 37:04the world with the Word by going and telling, it brings forth fruit and growth,
- 37:11in the world as it does in you.
- 37:17Since the day ye heard and knew the grace of God in truth.
- 37:26For the grace of God in all of its truth.
- 37:33In truth, that would be the idiomatic way of saying that. In all of its truth,
- 37:37in all of its beauty, in all of its fullness.
- 37:44Another word here, the word new, K-N-E-W. I tell you, these verses are packed.
- 37:52That word new in Greek is epigenosko. E-P-I-G-N-O, long O, S-K, long O. Epigenosko.
- 38:06Epigenosko, you know, means to know full or fully and completely.
- 38:10To have full, precise, complete, exact knowledge.
- 38:16The Aramaic word is Yada. Y-A-D-A.
- 38:22Another very important word. Because it means to know. Yada.
- 38:30However, Yada here is used in the extra extensive form.
- 38:40The extra-extensive form is that fourth form,
- 38:48that we'll get to in Colossians 2.10 where you've read about it in one of the collateral readings.
- 38:54You are completely, completely, completely complete. Remember that?
- 38:59That's the extra-extensive. Only used a few times.
- 39:03It's not used in overabundance in the New Testament.
- 39:07But it really intensifies the meaning. it's the extra extensive form.
- 39:16And so what does it mean then to know that you know that you know that you know.
- 39:23So it has the same idea as that Greek word to really know it to really know
- 39:29it to know it fully and completely boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy.
- 39:40Extra extensive English so anyway then as you learned of,
- 39:56Epaphras, the word also is omitted,
- 40:02in most of the text again. Epaphras was the one that taught them the great truth,
- 40:11the all truth of the Word.
- 40:17They knew the grace of God in truth.
- 40:22It was that truth that really worked with them. in that province of Asia.
- 40:29Of course, he's mentioned in chapter 4, in verse 12,
- 40:36Epaphras, who is one of you, a doulos of Christ, salutes you.
- 40:45So he was with Paul at Rome at this time.
- 40:51Always laboring fervently for you in prayer.
- 40:57Agonizomai, laboring. He was in the contest, really working fervently for you. In what?
- 41:04Prayers. Why? Well, he wasn't there with them.
- 41:09So he'd still labor for them, but in prayer.
- 41:12If he was there with them, he'd be teaching them. He'd be with them.
- 41:15He'd be fellowshipping. He'd be ministering to their needs.
- 41:19And praying. But now he's not, so what's he doing? He's agonizomai-ing in prayer.
- 41:26That you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
- 41:30And it says, Epaphras, who is one of you. He's one of you.
- 41:35So he was from Colossae. But where did he learn this knowledge of the all-truths?
- 41:44Paul was in Ephesus for how long? Two years, three months.
- 41:49Where was he teaching for two of those years? In a school of Tyrannus.
- 41:54I think Epaphras must have been somebody that came from Colossae to Ephesus,
- 42:00got in the core at Tyrannus,
- 42:04and took it back to Colossae. Now doesn't that make good sense? The school of Tyrannus?
- 42:11So he was a core grad, studied at the school of Tyrannus undoubtedly and returned
- 42:20to his hometown of Colossus.
- 42:26He went back and they were glad he did.
- 42:33Well, anyway.
- 42:38Ephras, our dear fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ.
- 42:46Minister is diakonos, D-I-A-K-O-N-O-S in Greek.
- 42:53And that's a word we've had before. It's one who has proven himself and serves
- 42:59in any capacity, a deacon, anyone who serves in any capacity,
- 43:05as long as he has first proven himself.
- 43:12A minister of christ why does it say of christ and why doesn't it say of jesus christ,
- 43:18i think because it's the mystery it's christ in you what did he teach him he's
- 43:24the one that taught him the mystery he's the one that taught him it's christ
- 43:27in you the hope of glory when he was first there,
- 43:37And it says he's a dear or beloved fellow servant. The word fellow servant.
- 43:48In Aramaic, it's kanatha. K-N-A-T-H-A.
- 43:57In Greek, it's sun, doulos. S-U-N and then doulos.
- 44:05And it means a slave together, bond slave together.
- 44:13The emphasis of the use of fellow servant in Colossians ties directly into the
- 44:22correction of their doctrinal error of the epistle.
- 44:28One of the main problems at Colossae was their failure to hold Christ as the head.
- 44:36Christ was the head.
- 44:39In Colossians 1.7 and again in 4.7, Epaphras and Tychicus are singled out by
- 44:49the use of this word, fellow slave,
- 44:53as examples to the Colossians of the correct lifestyle.
- 44:57If Christ is the head of the one body, And that makes us servants, slaves, bond slaves.
- 45:08But we are slaves together. Sundulas. See it?
- 45:14In the one body. And that's the key. Or a key to the success of the one body.
- 45:22Is not trying to be lords. Over God's heritage. But willing to be a bond slave.
- 45:30But not each slave going his own direction. But working together under that
- 45:35one head. Isn't that terrific?
- 45:38Great example. Epiphras was too. The word fellow slave occurs ten times in the New Testament.
- 45:46Five times in Matthew, three times in the book of Revelation,
- 45:51and twice here in Colossians.
- 45:54I gave both of those to you, Colossians 1.7 and 4.7.
- 46:00In Matthew, those five occurrences literally refer to fellow servants or slaves,
- 46:07men whose occupations were bond slaves who worked together in the same household.
- 46:16They didn't work at cross purposes, they worked together.
- 46:20The occurrences in the book of Revelation refer to those who served in the same
- 46:27way during the same time.
- 46:33Matter of fact, a voice from heaven and an angel also call themselves fellow slaves with John.
- 46:51In Colossians, the fellow slave refers to the bond slave of Christ.
- 46:59The word fellow servant literally means a bond servant, Servant,
- 47:04doulos, together with sun, together with another.
- 47:11To be a doulos requires totally selling out to one's master.
- 47:17The servant belongs to him and is branded with his mark.
- 47:22We are branded with the speaking in tongues.
- 47:29Epaphras and Tychicus were sundulos, with Paul and the believers.
- 47:35Both Epaphras and Tychicus worked with Paul.
- 47:39The number of references to
- 47:41that effect. Epaphras is called a faithful minister and servant of Christ,
- 47:47laboring fervently for you in prayers, and a fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus.
- 47:55He is mentioned both at the opening and closing of Colossians.
- 48:02In chapter 1, Epaphras communicated the spiritual love the believers of Colossae
- 48:08had for Paul and Timothy.
- 48:11In chapter 4, Paul communicated the great zeal that Epaphras had for the believers
- 48:17in Colossae, Laodicea, and Heriopolis.
- 48:23Specifically praying for their standing to be perfect and complete in all the will of God.
- 48:32Tychicus is called twice a beloved brother and faithful minister.
- 48:39Tychicus also traveled with Paul.
- 48:42Jesus Christ paid the price of redemption for every man and therefore is the
- 48:48master. The believer has been called to a family with Christ as the head.
- 48:57The Colossians needed to acknowledge Jesus Christ as their Lord and to sell
- 49:04out as bond slaves in service to him as Epaphroditus and Tychicus had.
- 49:13And of course that will be central when we get to Colossians chapter 3 where
- 49:17he says, renew your mind.
- 49:19Set your affection on things above and not on things on the earth.
- 49:24See, we're to think heavenly thoughts. Get our thoughts up there on the head, on Christ.
- 49:32As bond slaves working together in the body.
- 49:37And this is the greatness of holding the head. the greatness of holding the
- 49:42head is serving together in the
- 49:45body that's why he's called the bond slave together with that sun prefix,
- 49:52so verses 6 and 7,
- 49:56you got to start to get 6 you got to start way back in the middle of verse 5,
- 50:02you previously heard about this hope in the true word and don't forget the emphasis
- 50:09that dual genitive in Greek and Aramaic, the true word, the good news,
- 50:18which has been preached to you, even as it is preached in all the world.
- 50:26So it produces fruit and growth in all the world, even as it has in you from
- 50:35the day you first heard and fully knew with precise knowledge,
- 50:42God's grace in all its truth.
- 50:46From the day you first heard and knew that, fully knew it, God's grace in all of its truth.
- 50:55When Epaphras declared it, the advanced class.
- 51:01Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, the mystery, the one body,
- 51:06you learned this truth verse 7 from
- 51:10epiphras our beloved fellow
- 51:13slave who is a faithful servant of
- 51:16christ on your behalf then verse 8 who also declared unto us your love in the
- 51:25spirit love is agape the love of god in the renewed mind and manifestation which
- 51:31they heard about up in verse Verse 4, Paul heard about it.
- 51:34Where did he hear it from? Epiphras.
- 51:37Epiphras. They not only loved the saints, they loved Paul and Timothy.
- 51:43And Epiphras related that to them. And it's love in the Spirit.
- 51:48Spirit there is usage 6. Spiritual. Spiritual.
- 51:55So we translated it, He has related your spiritual love for us.
- 52:03Isn't that a tremendous section? I'd like to read it again to you,
- 52:08the whole thing, starting from the beginning.
- 52:10Paul, Jesus Christ's apostle, by God's will, and Timothy, a brother.
- 52:19To the set-apart and believing brothers in Christ Jesus at Colossae.
- 52:25Peace and grace to you from God our Father.
- 52:28We give thanks continually to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 52:34praying for you, having heard of your believing which is in Christ Jesus and
- 52:39your love to all those who are set apart,
- 52:42because of the hope which is stored in heaven for you.
- 52:46You previously heard about this hope in the true word,
- 52:50the good news which has been
- 52:53preached to you even as it is
- 52:56preached in all the world so it produces
- 52:59fruit and growth in all the world even as it has in you from the day you first
- 53:06heard and fully do with precise knowledge god's grace in all its truth you learn
- 53:15this truth from epiphras our our beloved fellow slave,
- 53:19who is a faithful servant of Christ on your behalf.
- 53:24He has related your spiritual love for us.
- 53:28See, they weren't way out in left field like the Galatians that we studied last fall.
- 53:35They weren't into that type of doctrinal error from the foundational doctrine.
- 53:40They just weren't holding the head, which is the great mystery.
- 53:44And that's where it starts.
- 53:46And that starts with not being willing to serve together in one body.
- 53:53All you say, I'm willing to serve, but I'm going to do it my way.
- 53:58Then you're pulling in different directions. You're not equally yoked.
- 54:02We're bond slaves together. Christ is
- 54:05the head no man is the head you
- 54:08know other than Christ but no other man
- 54:11is the head here upon earth crisis is the
- 54:14head of the body and we are bond slaves together working together and we must
- 54:19hold that head and serve the bread of life to people reaching the world with
- 54:25the word it was preached to you and And when that word lives, not only with you,
- 54:32but in other areas all over the world.
- 54:37And with this knowledge that you have of the world, it ought to live.
- 54:43It ought to live like it lives in Zaire. I mean, move like it moves in Zaire.
- 54:48Right here in the United States, you think that's impossible?
- 54:52No! We blame it on culture, we blame it on this, that. at the end. Baloney!
- 54:57The word ought to move. We ought to get excited about it. We ought to go out
- 55:02there and talk to everything that moves.
- 55:04Doggone it when you were out there on lightbearers. Didn't things happen?
- 55:08Why shouldn't that happen every day of your life when you're out there on the field?
- 55:15Boy, it ought to. And when the word lives and moves in an area, what happens?
- 55:20It produces fruit and growth in all the world.
- 55:26Even as it does in you, to wherever you are in your core, when you're out there
- 55:32on the field, boy, you ought to make it your goal.
- 55:34It's a lightbearer's day every day, reaching the world with the word, go tell.
- 55:41It's a good news day every day when you know this word and can put it together.
- 55:48Music.
