- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13In our current series, Imagining Work, we're asking
- 0:17the question, what story about work am I
- 0:19living in?
- 0:20Because not every story about work squares with
- 0:23the story that God is telling on the
- 0:24pages of the Bible.
- 0:26And that's the story that we want to
- 0:27live inside of, that we want to change
- 0:29our hearts and our minds, and help us
- 0:31live out life, at work and everywhere else,
- 0:34in a beautiful way that looks more and
- 0:36more like Jesus over time.
- 0:38So the image that we're going to look
- 0:40at today from the Bible is Gardener.
- 0:43What does it mean to do our work
- 0:44as gardeners, and how do we meet Jesus
- 0:47as the gardener of our souls?
- 0:54Now, the image of gardening or farming or
- 0:56sowing seeds comes up in scripture so many
- 0:59times, I feel like people who actually spend
- 1:01their time taking care of plants in real
- 1:03life have an unfair advantage in understanding of
- 1:06the Bible.
- 1:07I am not one of those people.
- 1:08I've spent a bare minimum of time in
- 1:10my life taking care of plants.
- 1:11I sometimes get anxious.
- 1:13I even got a little set of mums
- 1:16today and a little plastic planter to sit
- 1:18on the kitchen table.
- 1:19And I'm like already anxious that they're going
- 1:20to die, right?
- 1:22Because I just I want them to live.
- 1:24And so maybe it will be my my
- 1:26spiritual discipline to to be a gardener, to
- 1:28care for those mums as I live out
- 1:30what the scripture texts teach.
- 1:34But regardless of whether you have much time
- 1:36actually taking care of plants in your real
- 1:37life, this is an important image from the
- 1:40Bible.
- 1:41So we're going to look at a few
- 1:42different passages.
- 1:43We're going to start in Genesis chapter two,
- 1:45an account of the creation.
- 1:46So starting in verse eight, now the Lord
- 1:50God had planted a garden in the East
- 1:52in Eden, and there he put the man
- 1:55he had formed.
- 1:56And the Lord God made all kinds of
- 1:58trees grow up out of the ground, trees
- 1:59that were pleasing to the eye and good
- 2:01for food in the middle of the garden
- 2:03were the tree of life and the tree
- 2:05of the knowledge of good and evil.
- 2:08Skipping ahead to verse 15.
- 2:11The Lord God took the man and put
- 2:13him in the Garden of Eden to work
- 2:15it and take care of it.
- 2:18Okay, so there's several things happening in this
- 2:20passage.
- 2:21The first is that God creates the garden.
- 2:24The garden is already there, right?
- 2:25He puts humanity represented by Adam in this
- 2:28passage right in the middle of it.
- 2:30But then the first thing he does is
- 2:31he gives Adam a job to do, which
- 2:33is to take care of that environment.
- 2:36And we're used to this story, so it
- 2:39kind of makes sense to us.
- 2:40We might not question it, but it can
- 2:41be helpful to ask, well, how could the
- 2:43story have gone differently?
- 2:45Because the idea that humanity are meant to
- 2:48be gardeners is not necessarily a given.
- 2:51A lot of cultures around the world and
- 2:52their creation myths, that was not the role
- 2:54that they imagined for humanity.
- 2:57So, for example, in the Babylonian creation myth,
- 3:00the Enuma Elish, the god Marduk imagines humanity
- 3:03as builders of shrines for the gods.
- 3:06It's more of an architectural role.
- 3:08Or in the Cherokee creation myth, humanity's main
- 3:11role is hunting.
- 3:12In one of the Chinese creation myths, the
- 3:14mother goddess Nua, she forms certain people by
- 3:17hand out of clay, and they become the
- 3:21nobility.
- 3:21She mass produces other people by dragging a
- 3:24string across mud.
- 3:25They become the commoners.
- 3:27So people's role in life is based on
- 3:29whether they were specially created or mass produced.
- 3:33So, you know, there were other options, so
- 3:35to speak, in the ancient Near East when
- 3:37Moses was writing this text for how humanity
- 3:39could be imagined.
- 3:41But God reveals in this story that we
- 3:44are meant to be gardeners.
- 3:46That's how we should relate to God's world,
- 3:49and that's how we should do our work.
- 3:52And I think there's four ways we can
- 3:55unpack that.
- 3:56Gardeners cultivate, gardeners care, gardeners discover, and gardeners
- 4:03wait.
- 4:05And I think God's saying that those are
- 4:07the four things that we can do in
- 4:08our work that he intends for us to
- 4:10do in our work.
- 4:11That's why he picked this image, rather than
- 4:13all the other images he could have gone
- 4:15with to describe our role and our work
- 4:17in his world.
- 4:19So let's look at each of those in
- 4:20turn.
- 4:21First, gardeners cultivate.
- 4:23So you'll notice in this story, God creates
- 4:26the garden, but he also gives Adam work
- 4:28to do.
- 4:29So God didn't do everything.
- 4:31God left room for Adam to complete the
- 4:34project.
- 4:36And Andy Crouch, a Christian writer and kind
- 4:39of thinker on the lines of culture and
- 4:41institutions and things of that nature, he has
- 4:43a book about power called Playing God.
- 4:46And he looks at this passage in particular,
- 4:48and he says, what God does is he
- 4:51actually makes room for our power.
- 4:54So God has all power, but he doesn't
- 4:57push it to the limit.
- 4:58He actually kind of holds his power loosely,
- 5:02so to speak, and makes room for our
- 5:04power.
- 5:04He lets us finish the job.
- 5:07Pastor Timothy Keller, who just passed away in
- 5:092023, very influential and helpful thinker for me,
- 5:13he has a book about work called Every
- 5:14Good Endeavor.
- 5:15He kind of talks about the same dynamic
- 5:17of God making room for us by saying
- 5:19that God gives us the raw materials, but
- 5:22then we have to develop them.
- 5:24And let me just read a brief quote
- 5:25from that book.
- 5:27Keller writes, Humanity do not leave the land
- 5:31as it is.
- 5:32They rearrange it in order to make it
- 5:33most fruitful to draw the potentialities for growth
- 5:36and development out of the soil.
- 5:38They dig up the ground and rearrange it
- 5:40with a goal in mind, to rearrange the
- 5:42raw material of the garden so that it
- 5:44produces food, flowers, and beauty.
- 5:47And that is the pattern for all work.
- 5:50So I just love that, that idea that
- 5:52the job isn't done.
- 5:54God has left us room to unfold the
- 5:56potential of our work.
- 5:58And whatever your job is, that's true for
- 6:01you.
- 6:01If you're like me, you probably have a
- 6:03job description, but that job description does not
- 6:06spell out everything you need to know to
- 6:07get your job done.
- 6:08There's still room for you to figure things
- 6:09out, to make your job your own, to
- 6:12unfold the potential of what can be done
- 6:14for the good of the world, for the
- 6:15good of people within the role that you
- 6:17have.
- 6:18And that's true even if you have a
- 6:20very cut-and-dry job.
- 6:21If you're a bus driver, you still have
- 6:23a choice about how you greet people when
- 6:25they come on your bus, how you navigate
- 6:27the challenges of your particular route.
- 6:29You still have the capacity to unfold the
- 6:31potential of what God is giving you in
- 6:34that role.
- 6:35So that's the first way we think about
- 6:37work, is gardeners cultivate.
- 6:40Also, gardeners care.
- 6:42So this idea that God's given us something,
- 6:45that means He's given us something to take
- 6:46care of.
- 6:48I love the Living Bible.
- 6:50This is not a translation.
- 6:51It's a paraphrase from scholar Kenneth Taylor.
- 6:54It's the antecedent to the New Living Translation.
- 6:56But this is how he puts that verse.
- 6:58He says, So gardeners care.
- 7:09Whatever your role at work is, there's something
- 7:12or someone who's been entrusted to your care.
- 7:16So if you're a teacher, your students have
- 7:18been entrusted to your care.
- 7:19If you're a plumber, the pipes of your
- 7:22customers have been entrusted to your care.
- 7:24And you need to bring that attentive, hardworking,
- 7:29in the nitty-gritty attitude of, how can
- 7:32I care?
- 7:33How can I pay attention to what's really
- 7:35needed here so that I am trustworthy with
- 7:39what I've been entrusted with?
- 7:41Gardeners care.
- 7:44Third thing, gardeners discover.
- 7:47And this is something that comes out of
- 7:49the idea that it's living things that we're
- 7:51taking care of, at least in the gardening
- 7:53metaphor, regardless of what we're doing in our
- 7:56actual jobs.
- 7:57So it's not that architecture metaphor, like with
- 8:00the God Marduk, who wanted humanity to be
- 8:03builders of shrines.
- 8:05When you're an architect, you're working with inert
- 8:07materials, like stones or wood, so that they
- 8:10can do exactly what you want.
- 8:12You control things so that they fit the
- 8:14blueprint.
- 8:15But when you're gardening, you might choose where
- 8:17to plant the seed, but then it's going
- 8:19to spring up in its own shape over
- 8:21time.
- 8:21And you don't know exactly where every branch
- 8:22is going to go.
- 8:23You have to discover the work as time
- 8:25goes on.
- 8:27And Jesus actually speaks to this dynamic specifically
- 8:29in the Gospel of Mark, one of his
- 8:31parables of the kingdom.
- 8:33So this is chapter 4, verse 26.
- 8:36Jesus said, This is what the kingdom of
- 8:38God is like.
- 8:39A man scatters seed on the ground, night
- 8:42and day, whether he sleeps or gets up.
- 8:44The seed sprouts and grows, though he does
- 8:47not know how.
- 8:49All by itself the soil produces grain, first
- 8:52the stalk, then the head, then the full
- 8:56kernel in the head.
- 8:57As soon as the grain is ripe, he
- 8:59puts the sickle to it, because the harvest
- 9:01has come.
- 9:05Now Jesus in this passage is unpacking something
- 9:07about the whole kingdom of God, but he's
- 9:09appealing to that dynamic that the plant is
- 9:11growing even when the farmer is asleep.
- 9:14The plant is growing into the stalk and
- 9:16the head and the full kernel in the
- 9:18head eventually, even though he doesn't know exactly
- 9:20how that happens.
- 9:22And that's true of gardening in general, that
- 9:25we have to discover what our work is
- 9:27as time goes on.
- 9:29And so that's true in any line of
- 9:31work that we don't necessarily know in advance
- 9:34exactly what's going to happen.
- 9:35We don't have a blueprint for every year
- 9:37of our work life.
- 9:39We have to discover what's happening and adapt
- 9:41to the unanticipated as time goes on.
- 9:43And that's how God intended it.
- 9:45I, in my own need for control in
- 9:47life, sometimes an unhealthy attempt to get control,
- 9:50sometimes act more like an architect and less
- 9:52like a gardener at work.
- 9:54And I'm trying to learn how to unclench
- 9:56and trust God in the unanticipated things coming
- 10:00into my care.
- 10:02So that can be more like a gardener
- 10:03and the way I get my work done.
- 10:06So gardeners discover.
- 10:08And then finally gardeners wait.
- 10:10Jesus got at this within that parable as
- 10:12well, that farmer has to wait until the
- 10:15full kernel is in the head before taking
- 10:17the sickle for harvest time.
- 10:19And we often have to wait in our
- 10:21work lives.
- 10:22We have to wait for the promotion.
- 10:25That doesn't come as soon as we think
- 10:26we're ready for it.
- 10:27Maybe we have to bear with a coworker
- 10:29who's not catching on to things as quickly
- 10:30as we might hope and be patient with
- 10:32them and care for them as they learn.
- 10:36Maybe we have to wait for a change
- 10:37that's really needed on our team and wait
- 10:40for a project to launch until it's ready.
- 10:43Whatever it is that we're waiting for, it's
- 10:46a reminder for us that God is also
- 10:49working, right?
- 10:50That's kind of the background of that parable
- 10:52of Jesus, that that plant is growing because
- 10:55God is making it grow, even when the
- 10:56farmer is asleep.
- 10:58And so for us, as we're waiting, we're
- 11:00doing our part, but we can trust God
- 11:02is also doing his part to realize what's
- 11:05needed in our work.
- 11:06There's a power beyond ourselves at play in
- 11:09every workday.
- 11:11So hopefully that's helpful in terms of thinking
- 11:13what it means to be a gardener in
- 11:15your line of work, that you can cultivate,
- 11:18that you can care, that you can discover,
- 11:21and that you can wait, trusting that God
- 11:23is at work, a power beyond you every
- 11:25day that you work.
- 11:28But these things are also true of the
- 11:29work of Jesus.
- 11:31And I want to go to just one
- 11:32more passage from the New Testament from the
- 11:35Gospel of John.
- 11:36You might remember this poignant moment at Jesus'
- 11:38resurrection.
- 11:39He's still right next to the tomb, and
- 11:42Mary Magdalene is there, and she doesn't recognize
- 11:45him at first.
- 11:45Let me read from chapter 20, verse 15.
- 12:11So there's that beautiful moment of recognition when
- 12:14Jesus says her name, she sees him for
- 12:17who he is.
- 12:18More to that story than we can unpack
- 12:19here, but I just wanted to point to
- 12:21that one detail that Mary thought he was
- 12:24the gardener at first.
- 12:26And that means that the tomb was in
- 12:28a garden, and that's not an accident, that
- 12:30when Jesus took up his life again in
- 12:33resurrection power, he did it in a garden.
- 12:37He did it in a place of growing,
- 12:38living things, a place that echoes that garden
- 12:41of Eden where Adam was first placed.
- 12:45And there's a way in which Mary was
- 12:47mistaken, obviously.
- 12:48There's also a way in which Mary was
- 12:50right, because Jesus is the gardener.
- 12:52He's the gardener of our souls.
- 12:55He's working the soil of our hearts to
- 12:57bring something there, and he cultivates his virtues
- 13:01in our soul, peace and patience and kindness
- 13:03and goodness over time.
- 13:05He cares for us.
- 13:07He gives us what we need.
- 13:08He helps us to find true rest and
- 13:11security in our Father's love.
- 13:14He discovers.
- 13:15He understands who we are better than anyone
- 13:18else, and he doesn't control us to get
- 13:20us to become more like him.
- 13:21He, along with us, lets us develop freely
- 13:24into the creatures that he desires for us
- 13:27to be.
- 13:28And he waits.
- 13:29He is so patient with us, even though
- 13:31we are slow to learn what it means
- 13:33to do life with him and like him.
- 13:36He has much more patience than we do,
- 13:38and he waits for the head and the
- 13:41full kernel in the head to develop until
- 13:44we have the fullness of the stature of
- 13:46Christ over time.
- 13:52Lord Jesus, help us to find you as
- 13:55the gardener of our souls and help us
- 13:58to learn how to cultivate and care and
- 14:01discover and wait in the work that you've
- 14:04entrusted to our care.
- 14:06Do your work in us as we do
- 14:08our work with you.
- 14:16Thanks for listening.
