- 0:50Speaker 3: on Let's Talk.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, hope that you're having a good day.
- 0:55Speaker 4: I am about to get ready to talk to a
- 0:59Speaker 4: friend of mine that goes way way way back. I
- 1:03Speaker 4: have my my my co host Hollis Lewis in the
- 1:06Speaker 4: building and the football Queen Lise Odie on the other end,
- 1:11Speaker 4: and I have to just kind.
- 1:13Speaker 5: Of tell this story before before we get going.
- 1:19Speaker 4: It was interesting to me I played in the North
- 1:21Speaker 4: South game in who knows how long ago.
- 1:25Speaker 5: That was. But the biggest name, you know, we don't need.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Day, the biggest name in in the state for the
- 1:37Speaker 4: game was Kurt Warner and me and a buddy of
- 1:39Speaker 4: mine who's passed away, Eddie ray Dyas we couldn't wait
- 1:43Speaker 4: to see him.
- 1:44Speaker 5: Like we wanted. We wanted to look at him.
- 1:46Speaker 4: We wanted to see and we wanted to size him
- 1:48Speaker 4: up to just to see like, you know, because he
- 1:51Speaker 4: was from Pinefuls so that you know, it wasn't Triple A,
- 1:54Speaker 4: so we wanted to kind of see what he.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Was like, uh huh.
- 1:58Speaker 4: So we wait, we help him with his bags and
- 2:01Speaker 4: we're talking with him and all this kind of stuff.
- 2:05Speaker 5: And when he got on the field and.
- 2:07Speaker 4: He couldn't he couldn't do the full tackling and all
- 2:11Speaker 4: that because he was late because he was getting the O. J.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Simpson Awards, so you know, which again speaks how how
- 2:18Speaker 4: talented he was. So now he's out on the field
- 2:23Speaker 4: and man, when he got the ball the first time,
- 2:25Speaker 4: I was like, oh my god, like what.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Like what just happened? So Kurt, are you out there?
- 2:35Speaker 6: Yes, sir, I heard you.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Well, And again I want to make sure I have
- 2:43Speaker 4: Hollis Lewis here and Lisa Odie Okay, so that you
- 2:46Speaker 4: know the other voices around and Kurt, I've looked at
- 2:51Speaker 4: your bio. I've looked at your bio, man, and it is.
- 2:54Speaker 4: It is phenomenal and full of everything. From Rookie of
- 3:02Speaker 4: the Year, basically Offensive Player of the Year, three Pro Bowls,
- 3:08Speaker 4: All Rookie Team, Ring of Honor, a national championship, I
- 3:14Speaker 4: mean all all an All American team.
- 3:16Speaker 5: In eighty one. Bruh.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Like tell us like when you reflect back and you
- 3:26Speaker 4: look at this, and and and for the people who
- 3:29Speaker 4: don't know you, I kind of make it. I will
- 3:33Speaker 4: probably make the case. You probably don't even go back
- 3:35Speaker 4: and even think about it, But when you hear it,
- 3:39Speaker 4: what do you think, like, Well, how does it make
- 3:42Speaker 4: you like?
- 3:43Speaker 5: Because man, that's a great career.
- 3:47Speaker 6: Well let's start with the high school game in Charleston,
- 3:50Speaker 6: West Virginia. First. Okay, when you and Ray I thought
- 3:57Speaker 6: I thought we were like best at that moment. Come
- 4:03Speaker 6: to find all you guys for size. That's why most
- 4:11Speaker 6: of all, yes, yes, hey let me help you with
- 4:14Speaker 6: your bag, Hey, let me the room, Yeah, let me
- 4:19Speaker 6: help Youah. Okay, these guys be nice guy's a triple A. Guys,
- 4:24Speaker 6: I'm a single a guy regards to I'm the West
- 4:27Speaker 6: Virginia out in the Boonie. So yeah, that's that's.
- 4:34Speaker 5: What that's that's the new story for you.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Now I have I'll tell you something. I had a blast.
- 4:41Speaker 6: It was the most fun I've ever had playing against
- 4:45Speaker 6: guys like you and anyway in practice and then having
- 4:48Speaker 6: an opportunity to play in the game, and then our
- 4:52Speaker 6: friendship over the years. Yes, and really it's been a
- 4:57Speaker 6: good friendship. So I appreciate that.
- 5:00Speaker 7: So.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Uh so that's where I'll start. Okay, we can we
- 5:04Speaker 6: can move on.
- 5:06Speaker 4: How you doing, miss Warner? This is how Hollis lewis.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Oh you can't call him mister Warner.
- 5:10Speaker 5: You can't get it back. Well, how are you doing?
- 5:16Speaker 4: So you're being from like, as you mentioned, the Boonies, Pineville.
- 5:20Speaker 4: But what people may not know that area collectively Wyoming
- 5:24Speaker 4: Mother's different things of that nature. I mean, you have
- 5:26Speaker 4: some some athletic legends. You know, you got Nick sabans
- 5:30Speaker 4: Uh yourself, you got Christy Martin, the first female superstar, boxing,
- 5:35Speaker 4: Dan Antonio, basketball coaches, and and just a whole host
- 5:38Speaker 4: about the What was it about growing up in that
- 5:41Speaker 4: area that spawned so many, you know, high level athletes
- 5:44Speaker 4: and coaches.
- 5:46Speaker 6: That's a good question. I don't know. Other we just
- 5:51Speaker 6: played against one another growing up at a very high level.
- 5:57Speaker 6: And uh, I had a couple of cousins that were
- 6:01Speaker 6: just phenomenal basketball players governor of Frankie Warner and Eugene Warner.
- 6:07Speaker 6: They were just legendary. So I got to watch these
- 6:10Speaker 6: guys in action at Pineval High School, and I had
- 6:13Speaker 6: a number of other relatives and friends who had come
- 6:17Speaker 6: up through that Pine Built connection, and it was it
- 6:21Speaker 6: was it was competitive. I mean, it was just you know,
- 6:26Speaker 6: they talk about the Friday night fights and the Saturday
- 6:29Speaker 6: night lights and all the other stuff, and this was
- 6:31Speaker 6: exactly that way. I mean, it was just we didn't
- 6:34Speaker 6: like each other in that area, but it was it
- 6:41Speaker 6: was really good competition. And I got to see a
- 6:43Speaker 6: lot of it growing up and got to participate in it.
- 6:46Speaker 6: So I think that helped me right along the way.
- 6:48Speaker 8: So awesome, Hey there, I want to call you, mister
- 6:53Speaker 8: Warner all said, like Collins said, But I guess I'll
- 6:56Speaker 8: go back to Kurt.
- 6:57Speaker 9: How's that? So this is Lisa Kurk.
- 7:00Speaker 8: Good to Okay, thank you. It's good to have you
- 7:04Speaker 8: on the podcast tonight, so thank you. Yes, So I'm
- 7:07Speaker 8: looking back at your history, Like Carl said, it's so
- 7:09Speaker 8: impressive seeing all of the accomplishments that you've had in
- 7:12Speaker 8: football throughout your career.
- 7:14Speaker 9: You were also.
- 7:15Speaker 8: Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in two
- 7:17Speaker 8: thousand and nine. Then eventually during that time period, I
- 7:21Speaker 8: think you were playing for the Nitney Lions of course Penn.
- 7:23Speaker 9: State, and so walk me through how did you end up?
- 7:30Speaker 8: Were there other schools in the state that were recruiting
- 7:32Speaker 8: actively recruiting you, and how did you decide that, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 8: your your college career, the path you took was to
- 7:37Speaker 8: go to Penn State and play for the Nitney Lions.
- 7:43Speaker 9: Did I open a can of worms with that question?
- 7:46Speaker 6: I like it, I like it, good question. You are correct.
- 7:53Speaker 6: I did have a number of the schools who were
- 7:57Speaker 6: interested in my services at that now, uh, and we
- 8:02Speaker 6: didn't have the nil thing, so it was, you know,
- 8:04Speaker 6: just the the you know, it was what it is,
- 8:07Speaker 6: what it was, and so on and so forth, et cetera,
- 8:09Speaker 6: et cetera. So I did, uh, I did have an
- 8:14Speaker 6: opportunity to visit wn b U Uh. I narrowed it
- 8:20Speaker 6: down to w w U Tent, Penn State. I looked
- 8:27Speaker 6: at Notre Dame, uh, Nebraska. Tom Osbourne came to my
- 8:32Speaker 6: house in the middle of the winter and west by
- 8:34Speaker 6: God's Virginia, and yeah, it wasn't impressed. I was impressed. Uh.
- 8:43Speaker 6: And then I had Paternal to come down, and it
- 8:48Speaker 6: was you know, I knew I wanted to play at
- 8:51Speaker 6: a at a high level, and I had I had
- 8:56Speaker 6: heard about Penn State and Paternal uh and kid in
- 9:02Speaker 6: West Virginia. And once I went to visit the various
- 9:08Speaker 6: collegist schools universities, Uh, it just it was the right pick,
- 9:13Speaker 6: you know, with regards to Penn stay. Now, now you
- 9:17Speaker 6: had Robert Alexander and uh so that was kind of
- 9:22Speaker 6: a gauge as far as what I was looking at
- 9:26Speaker 6: and what I was gonna do. And I just, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 6: let let Robert stay there. I'll go somewhere else. And
- 9:35Speaker 6: that was kind of what I was thinking with regards
- 9:37Speaker 6: to that. So it wasn't go.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Ahead, Oh, Kurt, I was gonna I was gonna ask
- 9:43Speaker 4: this question as a as kind of a follow up. Also,
- 9:48Speaker 4: I think one of the interesting components that I thought
- 9:51Speaker 4: was you were like at that time you talked about
- 9:55Speaker 4: the eye back position, you know, right, that was you know,
- 10:01Speaker 4: in order to pick a school doing what you did
- 10:04Speaker 4: and what and the position and how you played. Those
- 10:08Speaker 4: were teams, the primary teams that you're talking about were
- 10:12Speaker 4: already had advanced to the eyeback formation with the toss
- 10:17Speaker 4: sweep and that type of thing, compared to and I
- 10:21Speaker 4: think WU had just kind of got there because because
- 10:25Speaker 4: when Robert first got there, they were in the near
- 10:28Speaker 4: far backs.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Kind of stuff.
- 10:29Speaker 4: And I know this is technical football kind of talk,
- 10:32Speaker 4: but what which never fits?
- 10:36Speaker 5: It can't fit an.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Eyeback because an eye back is just a it's a
- 10:40Speaker 4: natural it's a natural skill set of being able to
- 10:43Speaker 4: find where to go.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Am I right on that?
- 10:47Speaker 6: Yeah, they were running a veer offense where it was
- 10:50Speaker 6: faith on one side and you put to the other
- 10:52Speaker 6: side and no blocking in front of you. Not really
- 10:55Speaker 6: you didn't have a fullback in front, right, And I'm like,
- 11:02Speaker 6: you know, so I passed. I said, hey, you know what,
- 11:05Speaker 6: that's just not for me. That's not a good fit
- 11:07Speaker 6: for me. Uh. And I could see what Robert Alexander
- 11:11Speaker 6: was doing, So if it wasn't gonna work for him,
- 11:13Speaker 6: Surely the goodness is not gonna work for me as well.
- 11:15Speaker 6: I figured he let's go in a different direction.
- 11:18Speaker 4: So, now, being that you were from such a small
- 11:22Speaker 4: town in West Virginia, what or maybe the better question
- 11:26Speaker 4: is who gave you sort of the guidance and perspective
- 11:28Speaker 4: to think so big and large about particularly like coming
- 11:32Speaker 4: from Pineville and possibly considering Notre Dame on Nebraska or
- 11:35Speaker 4: some of these big schools.
- 11:37Speaker 6: Huh, that's that's that's a good question as well. You
- 11:40Speaker 6: know where I grew up, you had a couple of options. Uh.
- 11:46Speaker 6: You know, I'm not the smartest guy in the classroom,
- 11:49Speaker 6: so uh it was just one of them.
- 11:56Speaker 5: Iom.
- 12:00Speaker 6: You know, you you got to you gotta make your
- 12:03Speaker 6: you gotta make your hey when you have an opportunity
- 12:05Speaker 6: to do that, and uh so it's just it was,
- 12:12Speaker 6: it was. It was a challenging fit because I obviously
- 12:16Speaker 6: went up there to to look around and to visit
- 12:18Speaker 6: the campuses and to see the the the competition and
- 12:22Speaker 6: so on and so forth, and there was a lot
- 12:25Speaker 6: of competition at that level.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Now, Now, did you have like a coach or or
- 12:31Speaker 4: your like your your parents advising you at this time?
- 12:35Speaker 6: Well, I had a person by the name of Liddy McKinney,
- 12:39Speaker 6: believe it or not. She was my English teacher. Her husband,
- 12:43Speaker 6: Darryl McKinney, was a coach at Pineville High School years before,
- 12:47Speaker 6: so he coached my, my cousins and so on and
- 12:50Speaker 6: so forth. And it was it was kind of through
- 12:53Speaker 6: her because I had all of these people converging on Timeeville,
- 12:58Speaker 6: West Virginia, and I knew really knows sick and can
- 13:01Speaker 6: come here. So I kind of just she was kind
- 13:04Speaker 6: of like my agent at the time, and I trusted
- 13:10Speaker 6: her to be able to narrow it down or help
- 13:12Speaker 6: me narrow it down to a certain degree. And she
- 13:16Speaker 6: was a big Joe Paterno fan, so that that kind
- 13:19Speaker 6: of pushed me in that direction. And she was pushing
- 13:23Speaker 6: me in that direction, but I still wanted to go
- 13:25Speaker 6: and see the other opportunities that were out there. I
- 13:29Speaker 6: went up to pitt and I did not get a
- 13:33Speaker 6: chance to go to Nebraska and Notre Dame because of
- 13:36Speaker 6: weather issues. But you know, more importantly, I wanted my
- 13:42Speaker 6: parents and my friends to be able to come at
- 13:44Speaker 6: least to be able to drive from where we were
- 13:46Speaker 6: playing to watch the game. I needed them to be
- 13:49Speaker 6: involved in that process. And I'm sure glad I did
- 13:52Speaker 6: it because my old man, good God, bless his soul,
- 13:56Speaker 6: he's passed away. But man, he loved going to Penn State.
- 13:59Speaker 6: He loved of having holding courts and being able to,
- 14:03Speaker 6: you know, to be a part of that process. So
- 14:06Speaker 6: I was close enough. Yet I was in an arena
- 14:10Speaker 6: where I could play at you know, against some talent,
- 14:16Speaker 6: very talented teams and opportunities. So it was a combination
- 14:20Speaker 6: of both of those things. When it's all said and.
- 14:22Speaker 8: Pat, yeah, that's really that's a great story. So let's
- 14:26Speaker 8: go back. We'll just stay on this train with the
- 14:29Speaker 8: Penn State conversation, Kurt, if you don't mind. So your
- 14:32Speaker 8: tenure there was between the years of nineteen seventy nine
- 14:35Speaker 8: and nineteen eighty two, and you guys won the national
- 14:39Speaker 8: championship that year. I think Carl alluded to that in
- 14:41Speaker 8: his introduction of you. What was it like to go
- 14:43Speaker 8: through that experience with Joe Paterno?
- 14:48Speaker 6: Oh man, another good question.
- 14:52Speaker 9: We're just loaded with good questions for you. We're going
- 14:55Speaker 9: to get are we making it too hard?
- 15:00Speaker 6: Sometimes? Potno was a bear, Yes, I mean he didn't
- 15:05Speaker 6: take any stuff from anybody. So he and I respected
- 15:12Speaker 6: that because he kept us in line because there's a
- 15:14Speaker 6: lot of talent going on and you can call you
- 15:16Speaker 6: you know, at that level, there's a lot of talent
- 15:20Speaker 6: and there's a lot of guys who think that they're
- 15:24Speaker 6: the best. And you get to you get to play
- 15:27Speaker 6: it out on the practice field and you get to
- 15:29Speaker 6: play it out on the football field. But I'll tell
- 15:34Speaker 6: you what really, uh really got my attention when it
- 15:38Speaker 6: comes to Joe Paterno is the fact that, you know,
- 15:44Speaker 6: my freshman year he talked about academics. My freshman year,
- 15:48Speaker 6: we had to all Americans that were not able to
- 15:54Speaker 6: play that season because academically they were not there to
- 15:58Speaker 6: all Americans. Wow, And that got my attention. And what
- 16:03Speaker 6: he was saying to the rest of is you better
- 16:05Speaker 6: go to class. You're going to get an education as well.
- 16:09Speaker 6: So the second day, this is the second day of
- 16:11Speaker 6: training camp, we had one of our captain who was
- 16:17Speaker 6: not he was not in the football shape to do
- 16:22Speaker 6: what was required during that first you know, that first
- 16:27Speaker 6: day or so, you got to see what kind of
- 16:28Speaker 6: shape you're in and it's called I guess a training
- 16:32Speaker 6: camp shape or whatever you need to be in. So
- 16:34Speaker 6: we had a guy who was our captain who did
- 16:36Speaker 6: not make the times that he was allotted from running
- 16:41Speaker 6: a really which he probably shouldn't have been running it,
- 16:45Speaker 6: but he just didn't make the time. So he took
- 16:47Speaker 6: away his cates sit in the first two days of camp.
- 16:53Speaker 6: Paterno has already set his mark. As far as I'm concerned,
- 16:57Speaker 6: it's like, you know what, you got to go to class,
- 16:59Speaker 6: and you don't want to remember this guy because he
- 17:02Speaker 6: doesn't he doesn't play around. And so you know I
- 17:07Speaker 6: respected that and and and just by you know, him
- 17:11Speaker 6: holding us to a certain standard.
- 17:14Speaker 5: Uh.
- 17:14Speaker 6: He he backed it up. He didn't just say it,
- 17:17Speaker 6: he actually executed it. And you've got to respect the guy,
- 17:22Speaker 6: uh who who lived by those type of rules. So
- 17:27Speaker 6: as we move forward, you know, we played against some
- 17:29Speaker 6: pretty good competition, uh you know at Penn State, and
- 17:34Speaker 6: especially my senior year, we played uh you know, you know,
- 17:38Speaker 6: guys like Notre Dame, Alabama, Nebraska and and uh, you know,
- 17:44Speaker 6: it was just a matter of being in the right
- 17:46Speaker 6: spot at the right time to get to that national
- 17:48Speaker 6: championship game and the minute to have an opportunity to
- 17:50Speaker 6: play Georgia. Uh don it's a sugar Bowl. So it
- 17:55Speaker 6: was just a combination of a lot of different things
- 17:57Speaker 6: that it happened. And I thought we had a couple
- 17:59Speaker 6: of other teams that were better than in my senior year.
- 18:04Speaker 6: My junior year, I thought we had a better football team.
- 18:06Speaker 6: We just we lost one too many games. We lost
- 18:09Speaker 6: two games, and we were that's just not going to
- 18:11Speaker 6: get you in a national championship game. So that year
- 18:15Speaker 6: we lost one and we were able to compete at
- 18:18Speaker 6: that level. So you know, it's just a you know,
- 18:22Speaker 6: the Good Lord looking out for us in that time
- 18:25Speaker 6: and we had an opportunity to participate at that at
- 18:28Speaker 6: that level.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Kurt, I'm gonna win. Oh I'm sorry, Okay, I want
- 18:34Speaker 5: to jump in.
- 18:35Speaker 4: And and because you're hitting on something that triggers me,
- 18:39Speaker 4: you know, I go to Marshall and of course the
- 18:42Speaker 4: record wasn't this and wasn't that, So there was no
- 18:45Speaker 4: there was no necessarily celebration of being at Marshall at
- 18:49Speaker 4: that time. But Sonny Randall was there, who was a
- 18:54Speaker 4: disciplinarian and and you and the thing that.
- 18:58Speaker 5: What was triggered me as you were talking.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Coaches who hold you accountable and coaches that you know,
- 19:05Speaker 4: they don't care how good you are. They're willing to
- 19:09Speaker 4: sacrifice any and everything for the for the for your betterment.
- 19:15Speaker 4: So that and when I say for your betterment, that
- 19:18Speaker 4: you understand you are not this team. You are part
- 19:23Speaker 4: of it, but you're not this team. Sonny Randall put
- 19:26Speaker 4: me in study hall. I had like about a one
- 19:29Speaker 4: seven after like after my freshman year.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Bro, I was just so happy that I was at Marshall.
- 19:34Speaker 4: I was playing, I was, you know, getting some acculades
- 19:37Speaker 4: and people talking about me, and you know, this is
- 19:40Speaker 4: my first step trying to get to the league, and
- 19:43Speaker 4: and I'm not thinking school is the last thing on
- 19:46Speaker 4: my mind. And Sonny made that very clear and bright.
- 19:51Speaker 4: He made me stay in study hall my entire career
- 19:55Speaker 4: at Marshall.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Because of that. And and today, hey, I don't.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Know, you know, I don't know if coaches understand the importance.
- 20:07Speaker 5: You know. I think that sometimes we want to be buddies.
- 20:10Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but if.
- 20:12Speaker 4: You want to, if you want to impact a kid,
- 20:16Speaker 4: those coaches like that they impact you.
- 20:20Speaker 5: Would you would you agree with that?
- 20:22Speaker 6: Yeah? God, Paterno and I were not friends at all.
- 20:25Speaker 5: I mean we all hated it.
- 20:28Speaker 6: Yeah, it wasn't just me. We all hated him because
- 20:31Speaker 6: he was a bear. But when you go back, you
- 20:35Speaker 6: visit him after you get out of there, he's a
- 20:38Speaker 6: whole different person. I'm like, who is this scot? Every
- 20:42Speaker 6: conversation that we had, I was getting screamed at over something,
- 20:47Speaker 6: and so I tried to keep it to a minimum
- 20:49Speaker 6: with regards to that. But when I went back after
- 20:53Speaker 6: my rookie year, and uh, I went down to the
- 20:57Speaker 6: Fiestabo and I actually had a conversation with him. Whereas
- 21:01Speaker 6: we were having a conversation, I'm like, well, this guy's
- 21:03Speaker 6: you mad? You know what's the story here? But yes,
- 21:10Speaker 6: you've got to be held accountable. Uh, there is no
- 21:12Speaker 6: prima donna. There's no prima donna in football. It's not
- 21:16Speaker 6: going to happen. There's too many bevariables that come into play.
- 21:20Speaker 6: And it's a team game. It's the ultimate team game
- 21:23Speaker 6: when it when it comes to sports, as far as
- 21:25Speaker 6: I'm concerned, and I'm biased about it, but uh, there's
- 21:28Speaker 6: a lot of lack of lessons that you learned as
- 21:30Speaker 6: well with regards to sports and what it what it
- 21:33Speaker 6: does for you, and the opportunities that you have because
- 21:39Speaker 6: of it. Because like I said, I was not the
- 21:41Speaker 6: sharpest guy in the classroom. Let's not get usselves. But
- 21:44Speaker 6: I had an opportunity, uh to uh to move forward,
- 21:50Speaker 6: uh to not be a coal miner. Because it's either
- 21:53Speaker 6: you're going to get out of here one way, or
- 21:55Speaker 6: you're gonna go into coal mines and do something else.
- 21:57Speaker 6: And it is what it is.
- 22:02Speaker 5: That was.
- 22:04Speaker 6: Let the guy's on the truth either because I'm not
- 22:07Speaker 6: gonna get out of there either either way unless there's
- 22:10Speaker 6: something else that provides me an opportunity to to do
- 22:15Speaker 6: in that direction. In the direction anyway.
- 22:18Speaker 4: So just on the field when you get to Penn State,
- 22:21Speaker 4: I believe that initially he play some running back, obviously,
- 22:25Speaker 4: but you also did some special teams. And I want
- 22:27Speaker 4: to say, and you can correct me if I'm wrong,
- 22:29Speaker 4: your first touch, the first college touch, you were a
- 22:33Speaker 4: kick returning.
- 22:33Speaker 5: You took it to the house. Am I correct?
- 22:36Speaker 6: That is not correct? But that's okay, you know, we
- 22:38Speaker 6: can exaggerate it. I talked to Bill cot He's just
- 22:46Speaker 6: a great friend of mine, and he says, say, you
- 22:48Speaker 6: know what, one thing you got to learn to tell
- 22:50Speaker 6: his stories, Kurt. It's a Penn State guy. He said,
- 22:52Speaker 6: you gotta embellish. We're not gonna mbell it's almost broken.
- 23:00Speaker 6: I was pretty closed. But I do score three touchdowns
- 23:04Speaker 6: that day, So what do you know?
- 23:05Speaker 5: And that was and that was your first college game.
- 23:08Speaker 6: That was my first college game.
- 23:09Speaker 5: So how was that?
- 23:10Speaker 4: I mean, you're come, like I said, you're coming from Pinesville,
- 23:13Speaker 4: first college game, You're going through the camp all that,
- 23:15Speaker 4: then you finally get at a major university and pen st.
- 23:20Speaker 5: Yeah, and then then you know, you get three tds?
- 23:23Speaker 5: Like what was that feeling after?
- 23:27Speaker 6: Well? Uh, there were so many stories going on. I
- 23:34Speaker 6: really don't I don't know. I mean, how did they
- 23:36Speaker 6: find Joe Paterno? Or how did Joe find this guy
- 23:40Speaker 6: in Pineville, West Virginia. That was the biggest story. Who
- 23:43Speaker 6: are you.
- 23:44Speaker 9: Waver for social media or any of that. Yeah, that's
- 23:47Speaker 9: amazing social media.
- 23:49Speaker 6: And I think everybody in Pineville in that area was
- 23:51Speaker 6: probably shot that I had that type of a game.
- 23:55Speaker 6: Even I was shocked that I had that type of
- 23:57Speaker 6: a game. Uh, but uh, it was It was quite
- 24:02Speaker 6: a day. Uh but uh it was a lot of fun.
- 24:06Speaker 6: I had a great time and I was able to
- 24:09Speaker 6: play on a great football team. And my freshman year on.
- 24:13Speaker 6: So it was it was a good opportunity when you
- 24:16Speaker 6: go back.
- 24:17Speaker 5: When you when you look back at your.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Senior year at Poneville and because I'm I'm just going
- 24:26Speaker 4: from the North South game and seeing you in that
- 24:30Speaker 4: and the whole issue between you know, who's going to
- 24:33Speaker 4: be the best tail back? You were ready armstand like
- 24:37Speaker 4: when you were when you were I know, I knew
- 24:41Speaker 4: that would bring I knew that would bring bring back
- 24:43Speaker 4: a memory. So when you when you're when you're walking
- 24:49Speaker 4: around there and you're trying to figure out who you are,
- 24:53Speaker 4: are you understanding like the expectation of the people in
- 24:58Speaker 4: Poneville and the outs of the people who hadn't necessarily
- 25:03Speaker 4: seen you play. Did that ever have anything? Did you
- 25:08Speaker 4: think anything about that? Did you ever want to say, Hey,
- 25:11Speaker 4: I want to prove something wrong, like I want to
- 25:13Speaker 4: I want to prove these people wrong that I am
- 25:15Speaker 4: this kind of a player.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Because I know I was.
- 25:18Speaker 4: I was wholeheartedly that way, you know, because you know,
- 25:23Speaker 4: you know, my whole thing at Marshall.
- 25:25Speaker 5: I was happy to.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Be at Marshall, but I knew where Marshall was at
- 25:29Speaker 4: the time, you know, and so I wanted to prove
- 25:34Speaker 4: there was something I needed to prove to folks who
- 25:37Speaker 4: who doubted me. Who there were people who said I
- 25:40Speaker 4: wouldn't even play at Marshall. So I have to believe
- 25:43Speaker 4: that there was that motivation. Some of that motivation came
- 25:46Speaker 4: from I want to prove these people wrong.
- 25:50Speaker 5: Am I right there?
- 25:52Speaker 6: Yes? You are, You're You're completely right. I mean, there's
- 25:55Speaker 6: always a chip on one shoulder, and there's there's you've
- 26:00Speaker 6: got to have a reason to say, you know, I
- 26:03Speaker 6: can play at this level. And I believe that I
- 26:06Speaker 6: could play at that level from day one. But it
- 26:10Speaker 6: wasn't just because I, you know I it wasn't something
- 26:18Speaker 6: that I thought about with regards to well and my
- 26:23Speaker 6: second guessing what I can do and what I can't do.
- 26:27Speaker 6: I felt as though I could play there. I belonged there,
- 26:30Speaker 6: and now it was just an opportunity to get out
- 26:33Speaker 6: there and chill with me. That's really you got to
- 26:37Speaker 6: prove it to a certain degree because nobody's going to
- 26:39Speaker 6: give you anything, especially at that level when you've got
- 26:43Speaker 6: five six I mean, I remember going into our running
- 26:46Speaker 6: back room and they had, you know, the guys on
- 26:49Speaker 6: the board my freshman year and there was like seven
- 26:53Speaker 6: eight guys on that list, and I remember seeing that
- 26:56Speaker 6: and I was at the bottom of the list, and
- 26:58Speaker 6: it wasn't because my last name was said, I was
- 27:02Speaker 6: on the bottom of that list. That's thinking myself, Okay,
- 27:05Speaker 6: you know what, Well, when I get out of this camp,
- 27:07Speaker 6: I'm not gonna be on the bottom of this list
- 27:09Speaker 6: when I finish here as this camp. But that's what
- 27:11Speaker 6: I was saying to myself. But I was determined not
- 27:15Speaker 6: to be on that bottom of that list when it
- 27:17Speaker 6: was all said and done. And so that's, yeah, that's
- 27:22Speaker 6: what you're up against. You got to find something that says, hey,
- 27:28Speaker 6: I belong here, I can play here, I can do this,
- 27:30Speaker 6: But you also have to execute what you're doing because
- 27:34Speaker 6: it could have verily gone the other way.
- 27:37Speaker 9: Oh well, take hertis Lisa again.
- 27:40Speaker 8: So we're gonna keep going down this this memory memory
- 27:44Speaker 8: trip here, and we're going to take you back to
- 27:45Speaker 8: the summer of seventy nine.
- 27:48Speaker 9: You at that time, you were the Kennedy.
- 27:50Speaker 8: Award winner, and you were also a guest of honor
- 27:52Speaker 8: at a fundraiser at that time called the Run for Thad.
- 27:56Speaker 9: You were the honor honoree of that.
- 27:58Speaker 8: Of that event, and that event was to help establish
- 28:01Speaker 8: a memorial scholarship fund for it was in memory of
- 28:06Speaker 8: Thad Snagris, who was a DuPont High School student athlete
- 28:09Speaker 8: that was killed by a drunk driver in nineteen seventy eight.
- 28:13Speaker 9: And just to give you an update.
- 28:15Speaker 8: That year that you were the guest of honor, they
- 28:17Speaker 8: had raised five hundred dollars and were able to give
- 28:21Speaker 8: away one single scholarship.
- 28:22Speaker 9: But now it I just wanted to give you an
- 28:25Speaker 9: update to.
- 28:25Speaker 8: Now that they're giving out this same organization is still
- 28:28Speaker 8: is still in working and they give out at least
- 28:32Speaker 8: six scholarships a year at six sixty eight hundred dollars each.
- 28:35Speaker 9: So just wanted to let.
- 28:37Speaker 8: You know you were a part of something that has
- 28:39Speaker 8: really grown and helped a lot of the students at
- 28:41Speaker 8: the Riverside area of the east end of eastern end
- 28:43Speaker 8: of Kannall County.
- 28:45Speaker 5: Thank you much.
- 28:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I was a part of.
- 28:48Speaker 8: Yeah, So knowing that what are some other charitable you know,
- 28:52Speaker 8: causes that you're a part of. Now, are there any
- 28:55Speaker 8: you know near and dear to your heart that you'd
- 28:57Speaker 8: like to help with?
- 29:01Speaker 4: No?
- 29:01Speaker 6: You know what, I've got a couple of guys that
- 29:03Speaker 6: are on the Aufie in stec frum. Okay, so I
- 29:06Speaker 6: kind of that's spent a lot of I spend a
- 29:09Speaker 6: lot of time in that arena, sure, working with them
- 29:13Speaker 6: and making you know, making sure that they're you know.
- 29:19Speaker 9: Well, that's a charitable cause for for sure.
- 29:21Speaker 8: I mean you're you're a part of something that that's very,
- 29:24Speaker 8: very you know needed.
- 29:25Speaker 5: So for sure, all right, kats the kittens, have you heard?

- 30:54Speaker 3: Now back into the conversation.
- 30:56Speaker 5: We're going to jump to the NFL.
- 30:57Speaker 4: So, okay, okay, you get drafted. You're the third pick.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Do you know the two guys that were ahead of you?
- 31:05Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 31:05Speaker 6: I know?
- 31:10Speaker 5: Okay, all right, how did so when you get drafted?
- 31:14Speaker 4: Now, Now remember now you're talking to a dude who
- 31:16Speaker 4: came into seventh round, right, sixth big seventh round, so
- 31:19Speaker 4: so and was happy. So when you when you got
- 31:26Speaker 4: picked on the day that they picked you, and as
- 31:29Speaker 4: quick as you went, did it bother you that you
- 31:33Speaker 4: didn't go in one of.
- 31:34Speaker 5: Those first two picks or did it matter at.
- 31:37Speaker 6: All to you? Okay, not at all? You know what,
- 31:42Speaker 6: I had, no idea that's the when I was gonna
- 31:45Speaker 6: get picked. Okay, no idea.
- 31:47Speaker 4: What.
- 31:47Speaker 5: Yeah, they didn't tell you that back then. They didn't
- 31:49Speaker 5: really they.
- 31:50Speaker 6: Didn't tell anybody.
- 31:51Speaker 8: No.
- 31:51Speaker 6: No, we didn't have the ESCN thing right right, you know,
- 31:55Speaker 6: you know, hugging on the commissioner and all the other staff. No,
- 32:01Speaker 6: So that that's another story for another day. Uh, it was,
- 32:09Speaker 6: you know. My agent was Marvin dam Off, and I
- 32:15Speaker 6: had talked with coach Knox, Chuck Knock. He and his
- 32:18Speaker 6: wife Shirley came up to Pennsylvania as he was the
- 32:22Speaker 6: new coach of the Seattle Seahawks at that time. They
- 32:25Speaker 6: were picked number nine. They had a ninth pick, and
- 32:28Speaker 6: I remember talking to Gosh, what's the guy's name? The
- 32:32Speaker 6: the Uh it wasn't the recruiter he was the uh,
- 32:37Speaker 6: the guy who was the talent scout for the Seattle
- 32:41Speaker 6: Ralph gold Steam.
- 32:42Speaker 5: Now you remember Ralph.
- 32:43Speaker 6: You never see him round I've heard.
- 32:46Speaker 5: Why do I know that name?
- 32:48Speaker 6: Because he was he he was all in the NFL
- 32:51Speaker 6: around quite a bit with the Seattle Seahouse. He was
- 32:53Speaker 6: the guy that went out and do the scouting thing.
- 32:56Speaker 6: So he had come up to Penn State and uh,
- 32:59Speaker 6: we we were doing the forties and all the other stuff.
- 33:01Speaker 6: Because now you were doing it on campus back then,
- 33:04Speaker 6: right and now you can pretty much, you know, do
- 33:07Speaker 6: it wherever. But so, uh so he he had mentioned
- 33:11Speaker 6: the fact that you know they're number nine, and then
- 33:15Speaker 6: he said you're going to be gone before then. Well, okay,
- 33:19Speaker 6: that's fine, But I still had no idea as to
- 33:21Speaker 6: where I was going or what was going to happen.
- 33:24Speaker 6: So knock them up. And I talked to him in
- 33:27Speaker 6: his wife and he was the coach with the Seattle Seahawks.
- 33:31Speaker 6: And then one thing kind of let or another, and
- 33:34Speaker 6: I didn't really know what the situation was probably until
- 33:38Speaker 6: maybe a day before uh the actual draft, where I'd
- 33:42Speaker 6: gotten a call from my agent, Marvin Demo, and he said, hey,
- 33:47Speaker 6: I need you to come out to cut up to
- 33:49Speaker 6: La because you're gonna you're gonna you're gonna be headed
- 33:53Speaker 6: north up to Seattle. I'm like, Okay, that works for me, Okay,
- 33:58Speaker 6: was it? Uh So that's kind of how I knew
- 34:01Speaker 6: about it, and that's that's kind of what happened on
- 34:03Speaker 6: my end. But yeah, I knew l Way was gonna
- 34:07Speaker 6: go number one, and I knew Eric Differson was gonna
- 34:12Speaker 6: go number two, and then I was gonna go number.
- 34:15Speaker 5: And again.
- 34:16Speaker 4: Man, that's that's huge, and that's behind you know, Eric Dickerson,
- 34:21Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, and and and and to me.
- 34:26Speaker 4: And when I and again, I can I go back
- 34:28Speaker 4: to I go back to the game and us laying
- 34:31Speaker 4: on the on the turf laughing because I'm laying on
- 34:35Speaker 4: top of you, and all of a sudden there's two
- 34:39Speaker 4: West Virginia guys from the North South game who are buddies,
- 34:42Speaker 4: who are laying on the turf, just absolutely like laughing
- 34:46Speaker 4: because we can't we you know, it's just unbelievable that
- 34:49Speaker 4: this is actually happening. I can remember that. I can
- 34:52Speaker 4: I can remember that playing as day man, and I may.
- 34:55Speaker 6: Have said a few other words, well, I would.
- 35:00Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna try to take some credit like
- 35:01Speaker 4: I did tackle you, so you know, so tell me
- 35:15Speaker 4: a little bit more accurt about like, Okay, so when
- 35:18Speaker 4: you go when you're the first pick to a team,
- 35:22Speaker 4: and you go to this team, and obviously me like you,
- 35:27Speaker 4: like anybody who's coming, everybody wants to play, everybody wants
- 35:31Speaker 4: to start. Yeah, I remember going in and checking, you know,
- 35:36Speaker 4: looking at at my position. I'm moving from safety to corner.
- 35:39Speaker 4: So I'm now I'm checking out the corners. I'm kind
- 35:41Speaker 4: of looking to see, Okay, who can I go after?
- 35:44Speaker 4: Do you remember your process of trying to figure out
- 35:48Speaker 4: like who you had to get past?
- 35:51Speaker 5: How did you think that you were going to get him?
- 35:54Speaker 6: Or you just on the top of the When I
- 35:55Speaker 6: walked in there, I was on the top of the board.
- 35:57Speaker 5: There you go, what's just a bottom?
- 36:00Speaker 6: I was at the top, and they're like, let's see
- 36:03Speaker 6: what you can do.
- 36:04Speaker 4: So so they put you, they put you in the
- 36:07Speaker 4: eye right now.
- 36:09Speaker 6: Let me tell you something. You're the number one guy.
- 36:12Speaker 6: You've got all the other stuff that there's no hiding you.
- 36:16Speaker 6: You can't hide. You gotta play. So what are you
- 36:20Speaker 6: gonna do? You're gonna play. You're gonna play. What what's
- 36:23Speaker 6: going on here? Well, you know what, you gotta bring it.
- 36:27Speaker 6: I can't hide. I an say I can hide, you know,
- 36:30Speaker 6: back in the weeds in the wood.
- 36:34Speaker 5: But you got to get there. You gotta go.
- 36:37Speaker 6: It's exposed. And I'm like, oh man, so you know,
- 36:42Speaker 6: and you gotta show up. Because you don't show up,
- 36:46Speaker 6: they got no use for you. You gotta go. Yeah,
- 36:49Speaker 6: you don't want to bus So so that was that.
- 36:52Speaker 6: That's that's what I did not want to be, was
- 36:55Speaker 6: a bust bring it. I had the right guy had
- 37:00Speaker 6: ground Chuck, and you know what he said to me was, hey,
- 37:04Speaker 6: the ball ain't heavy. The ball ain't heavy. I'm not
- 37:09Speaker 6: having the ball not heavy?
- 37:12Speaker 5: When the daylight.
- 37:13Speaker 6: That was the second thing he said, run the daylight
- 37:15Speaker 6: and run with he ain't so.
- 37:19Speaker 4: Like.
- 37:19Speaker 6: That was my instruction from Chuck knock and I just
- 37:22Speaker 6: s I still remember it heavy. You're gonna be running
- 37:29Speaker 6: that football. She's a ball right here. It ain't heavy.
- 37:33Speaker 6: Let's go.
- 37:34Speaker 9: Love that phrase.
- 37:36Speaker 6: That's what he did. He had a lot of phrase
- 37:38Speaker 6: they called them. Go not today, not today.
- 37:44Speaker 4: That's awesome And I think that what that does is
- 37:47Speaker 4: sort of display the attitude that you had coming in
- 37:49Speaker 4: at you know, particularly at various levels, because you had
- 37:52Speaker 4: to take on one sort of role coming into Penn State.
- 37:55Speaker 4: Then when you go to the NFL, it's it's another
- 37:57Speaker 4: as far as being on the top of the list.
- 37:59Speaker 4: So what I want to ask is, like a lot
- 38:02Speaker 4: of times when you have guys and athletes coming from
- 38:05Speaker 4: small towns and going to you know, bigger, bigger cities,
- 38:08Speaker 4: and then obviously being on the top of your field
- 38:11Speaker 4: of endeavor, which was football, a lot of them subscribe
- 38:14Speaker 4: to a lot of the trappings that are around.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Particularly being the number one, you know, p of a team.
- 38:21Speaker 4: So how did you avoid that during particularly that mid
- 38:24Speaker 4: eighties when you know kind of we all know what
- 38:26Speaker 4: was going on at that time.
- 38:29Speaker 6: You know what it wasn't I think it's just your upbringing,
- 38:34Speaker 6: your friends, your family and the values that they instilled
- 38:41Speaker 6: in you. You don't. I didn't very too much off
- 38:47Speaker 6: of that, so I was able to kind of keep
- 38:49Speaker 6: the focus on what I needed to do. As far
- 38:54Speaker 6: as as far as I was concerned, I was well
- 38:57Speaker 6: ahead of the game. I wasn't in the coal mines
- 38:59Speaker 6: of That's Virginia, remember that, right, right, and was a
- 39:05Speaker 6: great experience, so I would what I got no complaint.
- 39:10Speaker 6: I'm okay. So now you've got to go out here
- 39:13Speaker 6: and and and uh and play at another level, which
- 39:18Speaker 6: is Carl, you know that the NFL level that that
- 39:21Speaker 6: that is the whole different level within itself. You can't
- 39:25Speaker 6: you can't duplicate that. You can't go out and practice
- 39:28Speaker 6: that these are the best of the best. You can't
- 39:31Speaker 6: fake it. You can't fake no new dude.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And and and to that at all, and to that, Kurt,
- 39:40Speaker 4: there has to be you have to have not I'm
- 39:43Speaker 4: not gonna say it can't be an arrogance, because arrogance
- 39:46Speaker 4: can can cost you. But you've got to have the
- 39:49Speaker 4: confidence to know one, I've done everything I can do
- 39:53Speaker 4: working out.
- 39:54Speaker 5: You know, I'm gonna work as.
- 39:55Speaker 4: Hard as I possibly can. I'm all out work anybody
- 39:58Speaker 4: that's in the position that I'm those when when when
- 40:02Speaker 4: you get people who focus on a dream, something that
- 40:08Speaker 4: they want and you don't, you don't veer off of that,
- 40:11Speaker 4: and you're not gonna let.
- 40:12Speaker 5: Anybody take you from that. I didn't care who was
- 40:16Speaker 5: playing corner.
- 40:17Speaker 4: I just wanted to know which one was gonna be
- 40:19Speaker 4: the first one I could get, you know, and as
- 40:22Speaker 4: soon as I walked in, I'm trying.
- 40:24Speaker 5: I'm trying to get you. I'm sorry, I don't know,
- 40:25Speaker 5: I don't really know you. I'm sure we'll get to
- 40:29Speaker 5: know each other.
- 40:29Speaker 4: But but you and my spot and and and as
- 40:33Speaker 4: arrogant as that sounds, you're not gonna make it, and
- 40:37Speaker 4: you're not gonna make it at that point.
- 40:39Speaker 5: If you're not thinking.
- 40:40Speaker 6: That way, I would call it a quiet confidence. You
- 40:44Speaker 6: don't go out and talking, you know, you do it,
- 40:47Speaker 6: you execute it because I don't want to hear you talking.
- 40:51Speaker 6: Do something, just be quiet and play. And that is
- 40:55Speaker 6: the mindset. That was my mindset. I don't I don't
- 40:58Speaker 6: need to talk. We'll speak, you know, for itself. And
- 41:03Speaker 6: that that's that was my mindset. Uh, that was my
- 41:07Speaker 6: attitude with regards to playing in the NFL, because I mean,
- 41:12Speaker 6: you got guy, you got guys that are like Lawrence Taylor.
- 41:14Speaker 6: I mean that guy was. Youre talking about men, the
- 41:19Speaker 6: men amongst the men. That guy was. He was crazy.
- 41:23Speaker 6: He was crazy. He was the craziest guy I've ever seen,
- 41:26Speaker 6: and I mean good crazy. He could play, he could
- 41:28Speaker 6: scare your you know, he's like the guy you don't
- 41:30Speaker 6: want to mess around with him. Uh, let's run to
- 41:32Speaker 6: the other side. Let's let's let's not let's not run
- 41:34Speaker 6: at this guy.
- 41:35Speaker 4: You come in eighty three, when we came in in
- 41:37Speaker 4: eighty three. But there were some dogs in the league.
- 41:40Speaker 6: Oh, there were some crazy people out there. They were
- 41:44Speaker 6: all crazy. You gotta get crazy right along with them.
- 41:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:49Speaker 6: I don't know why you do it. You you got
- 41:52Speaker 6: to about the third or fourth quarter you just say, Okay,
- 41:54Speaker 6: you know what, I don't care anymore. I just don't care.
- 41:56Speaker 6: Let's just play.
- 41:58Speaker 8: So yeah, yeah, Hey, Kurt, So I'm going to talk
- 42:02Speaker 8: a little bit about a career changing moment, probably probably
- 42:04Speaker 8: not one of your fondest memories of your NFL experiences,
- 42:07Speaker 8: but Week one of nineteen eighty four when you injured
- 42:10Speaker 8: your right ACL and you missed the rest of this season.
- 42:15Speaker 8: We've talked on here. I know Carl's had some of
- 42:17Speaker 8: his former teammates from the Vikings talk about their own injury,
- 42:21Speaker 8: you know, detrimental injury experiences with the team doctors, and
- 42:26Speaker 8: how was that for you whenever you found out that
- 42:29Speaker 8: your ACL was injured, and it was you know, it
- 42:31Speaker 8: could be a career changing type of injury. How did
- 42:34Speaker 8: the Seahawks handle that injury with you and how did
- 42:36Speaker 8: you overcome all that controversy.
- 42:41Speaker 6: Doctor Scranton, who was our orthopedic surgeon, I specifically him
- 42:49Speaker 6: remember him coming into my to the hospital room bed
- 42:53Speaker 6: saying after the surgery, he says, I have fixed your
- 42:57Speaker 6: knee accordingly. Now it's up to you to do something
- 43:02Speaker 6: about it. Right, And because I had no idea, you
- 43:06Speaker 6: know just how how significant that was with regards to
- 43:12Speaker 6: the injury. You know, I didn't think that I wasn't
- 43:15Speaker 6: ever going to play again. I figured, hey, it's another
- 43:18Speaker 6: obstacle you got to overcome. But he did fix my
- 43:22Speaker 6: knee accordingly, and I didn't have any issues with it.
- 43:26Speaker 6: So it's just a manner of you know, getting you know,
- 43:30Speaker 6: nine months of rehab right, pretty much every day, eight
- 43:34Speaker 6: hours a day of rehab. I mean not literally, that's
- 43:37Speaker 6: how much time I spent to get back, you know,
- 43:41Speaker 6: on track. And I and my knee was healthy. It
- 43:44Speaker 6: wasn't you know, it was it was stable.
- 43:47Speaker 9: It was.
- 43:50Speaker 6: It wasn't like, Okay, I'm running and all of a
- 43:52Speaker 6: sudden I can't run or it pops or it clicks
- 43:54Speaker 6: or something like that. I didn't have that that that issue. Well,
- 43:58Speaker 6: I you know, I fortunately enough to have a great
- 44:01Speaker 6: doctor who actually mean he went in and did what
- 44:04Speaker 6: he said he was going to do. Uh and uh,
- 44:08Speaker 6: you know, I had to, you know, work at it
- 44:11Speaker 6: quite a bit for a long time. And I appreciate
- 44:13Speaker 6: our trainers because they did a great job as well.
- 44:16Speaker 6: And then I wore a knee brace for my first
- 44:19Speaker 6: year or so, and then it broke and fell apart
- 44:25Speaker 6: my second year or so, and I just I didn't
- 44:29Speaker 6: even put it back on. I said, I'm done. I
- 44:31Speaker 6: don't need it's.
- 44:33Speaker 8: An amazing and that was an amazing you know, overcoming
- 44:36Speaker 8: that that that's pretty pretty special.
- 44:39Speaker 4: And I'm shocked, I guess I'm shocked that you you
- 44:41Speaker 4: would take that brace off.
- 44:45Speaker 6: I broke it. It broke, and and I'm like, what
- 44:48Speaker 6: they don't break And I don't, you know, I'm talking
- 44:54Speaker 6: about the breaks. I don't talking about people. I'm just
- 44:56Speaker 6: I just don't like that bake on my knee. And
- 44:59Speaker 6: then it broke and I I went to the sidelines
- 45:01Speaker 6: and I just said, you know what, I'm done. I'm
- 45:04Speaker 6: not I'm not wearing a stick. And then two plays
- 45:06Speaker 6: later I got hit I got hit on the knee.
- 45:09Speaker 6: I got hit, and then I got up and.
- 45:12Speaker 5: I was like, oh, now it's okay, it's okay.
- 45:15Speaker 6: You know what, Now it's okay. And then I proceeded
- 45:19Speaker 6: to just go after it from that time all so
- 45:21Speaker 6: it was a little you know, there's there's somehow it
- 45:27Speaker 6: just clicked. It was like, okay, I got ninety nine
- 45:31Speaker 6: point five and then all of a sudden, the brace
- 45:33Speaker 6: went away and then I got hit, and it's like, okay,
- 45:35Speaker 6: just I think about it. I just started playing again
- 45:38Speaker 6: right now.
- 45:39Speaker 4: Not only because we talked. Coachly talked about you guys
- 45:42Speaker 4: playing in the North South Game together during high school,
- 45:45Speaker 4: but I also believe you guys played in the Pro
- 45:47Speaker 4: Bowl together. Yes, in my correct eighty seven. Yes, Now,
- 45:52Speaker 4: how was that kind of reconnecting? You know, playing in
- 45:55Speaker 4: the All Star game in high school? Now you know
- 45:57Speaker 4: you meet each other back in the league.
- 46:00Speaker 6: You know, did I play that year? I don't know
- 46:04Speaker 6: if I played.
- 46:05Speaker 4: You know what now that I think, yeah, you were selected,
- 46:08Speaker 4: but I don't I don't think that you don't think
- 46:10Speaker 4: that you play.
- 46:11Speaker 5: I don't think that you didn't show up.
- 46:13Speaker 6: I said, you know what, my my knee still hurts
- 46:16Speaker 6: and I'm not gonna play. No, I wasn't. I didn't
- 46:23Speaker 6: want to play person.
- 46:31Speaker 4: I just know.
- 46:34Speaker 6: I just like you know what, I don't want to play.
- 46:36Speaker 6: Uh because Carl, if you know that game over there,
- 46:40Speaker 6: they didn't really do anything until maybe the fourth quarter,
- 46:44Speaker 6: where when you start kicking in who's gonna get paid?
- 46:46Speaker 6: What the first couple of quarters, I mean we we
- 46:50Speaker 6: were taking it easy on each other because you don't
- 46:53Speaker 6: want to see anybody get hurt. And uh so.
- 46:57Speaker 4: When you look at it to pretty interesting when you
- 46:59Speaker 4: look at it today, what does it even look like
- 47:01Speaker 4: to you today? Because it's not even a game anymore.
- 47:05Speaker 4: Like that's just why that's.
- 47:07Speaker 6: You know what I say, You know what I say.
- 47:09Speaker 6: I'm like, why why you're not doing anything? So you
- 47:14Speaker 6: know they're playing playing.
- 47:15Speaker 4: Football now with exactly and you know what, you know
- 47:19Speaker 4: what bothers me? And I'm curious about how you how
- 47:22Speaker 4: what you think about this? And Hollis and Lisa, you
- 47:24Speaker 4: you all can chime in real quick too, like why
- 47:29Speaker 4: even so, why don't you just have like, you know,
- 47:33Speaker 4: an all pro team, all this whatever whatever you want
- 47:36Speaker 4: to call it, and just erase all of the games
- 47:40Speaker 4: and just let it be like like all State, all conference.
- 47:43Speaker 5: Why not just make it that and then and don't
- 47:46Speaker 5: put no game with its no game, no more.
- 47:49Speaker 4: Yeah, but I mean don't even do don't do nothing.
- 47:53Speaker 5: Just just give you the honor and move on and
- 47:57Speaker 5: move on. I mean they got to feel the gap
- 47:59Speaker 5: between the playoffs and no, they got to make money. Well,
- 48:04Speaker 5: they're gonna make money. You gotta feel that weekend. And
- 48:06Speaker 5: you know, so what don't.
- 48:08Speaker 6: They Why don't they blame Well, you couldn't because he
- 48:10Speaker 6: couldn't bring college kids in there and let them play
- 48:13Speaker 6: and do it that way. Because I don't I think
- 48:15Speaker 6: they're in the it's isn't it during that? Uh? Isn't
- 48:20Speaker 6: it during the bowl games? Which these kids don't play
- 48:22Speaker 6: any longer in the bowl games anyway?
- 48:23Speaker 4: Right the national championship, the championship, I think, right like
- 48:29Speaker 4: right after.
- 48:30Speaker 6: But okay, so yeah, I don't I don't know why.
- 48:33Speaker 6: It's like, why play in it? Because it's just the
- 48:40Speaker 6: gal you to a certain degree. And I don't blame
- 48:42Speaker 6: the guys for not playing. It's you know, it's like, hey,
- 48:44Speaker 6: I don't want to go there and get hurt and
- 48:46Speaker 6: then all of a sudden you're done and you don't
- 48:49Speaker 6: you don't want to career any injury out there playing
- 48:52Speaker 6: that area because you're not really focused on it. It's
- 48:55Speaker 6: not a game game. You're just kind of going through
- 48:58Speaker 6: the motions, which I hate say, but you know you're
- 49:01Speaker 6: trying to protect your yourself and others as well as you.
- 49:06Speaker 9: Should, right, I mean as you should?
- 49:08Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 49:08Speaker 9: Yeah, all right, So I have one more question.
- 49:10Speaker 8: I'm going back to your Nitney Lion days and I'm
- 49:13Speaker 8: going to kind of throw in a little Mountaineer Nitney
- 49:16Speaker 8: Lion rivalry discussion here. So I think you've been you
- 49:20Speaker 8: were a part of that, correct, some of the games
- 49:22Speaker 8: that were played between WU and Penn State, and so
- 49:26Speaker 8: out of the sixties sixty previous meetings, I think the
- 49:29Speaker 8: Nitney Lions led the series forty nine to nine and two.
- 49:33Speaker 8: So what are your thoughts on do you feel like
- 49:35Speaker 8: the WVU Penn State rivalry over the years?
- 49:38Speaker 9: Was it really truly a robbery?
- 49:40Speaker 8: I know some of the arguments are when there's a
- 49:42Speaker 8: rivalry that it's not as lopsided with wins and losses.
- 49:46Speaker 9: How does Penn State.
- 49:47Speaker 8: Look or view the WVU rivalry Do they feel like
- 49:51Speaker 8: it's a rivalry?
- 49:53Speaker 9: Yes, okay we did okay, without it out, Okay.
- 49:55Speaker 6: Got it out. We put that game very seriously. And
- 49:59Speaker 6: if you don't take it seriously, you're good. That's when
- 50:01Speaker 6: you're gonna get beat. It didn't matter to us what
- 50:05Speaker 6: the record was there was want to oh, we weren't gonna,
- 50:09Speaker 6: you know, let up on them because we had won
- 50:12Speaker 6: who knows how many more games than so nothing, but
- 50:17Speaker 6: we were able to focus in on what we needed
- 50:19Speaker 6: to do that week and knowingly that West Virginia you know,
- 50:23Speaker 6: could beat us at any given time, you can lose,
- 50:26Speaker 6: so we uh, we took it very seriously for gun concerts.
- 50:31Speaker 5: Well, anybody got anything anything else?
- 50:34Speaker 4: Kurt uh Hollis, Yeah, just again you you were tired
- 50:37Speaker 4: in the nineties, so just like post football, what has
- 50:41Speaker 4: life been like and kind of what have you been
- 50:42Speaker 4: up to since your playing days have been done?
- 50:46Speaker 6: Business asopreneur guy uh had was in the auto indust
- 50:51Speaker 6: for for a number of years, in the insurance industry
- 50:53Speaker 6: and so on and so forth, So I have no
- 50:56Speaker 6: I have no complaints, uh, just taking care of the
- 51:00Speaker 6: kids in the family and so on and so forth.
- 51:02Speaker 6: So I'd love to get back there every so often.
- 51:05Speaker 6: But uh, it's been a while.
- 51:07Speaker 5: Yeah, we would love to have you back.
- 51:09Speaker 4: Hey, And I was gonna say, I was gonna say,
- 51:11Speaker 4: if you come back and you don't contact me, just
- 51:16Speaker 4: so that if you don't, if you're not if you're
- 51:19Speaker 4: not too busy, right, if you don't call me, we're
- 51:24Speaker 4: gonna have a problem.
- 51:27Speaker 5: I'm you again.
- 51:29Speaker 9: That sounds a bit threatening, Kurt, I don't know about that.
- 51:33Speaker 9: Take that.
- 51:35Speaker 7: Now, I'm getting the I'm getting the true clar that
- 51:43Speaker 7: high school day, that high school day.
- 51:50Speaker 6: I got play bro.
- 51:52Speaker 5: We you didn't.
- 51:54Speaker 4: You didn't get play. You didn't get played. We just
- 51:57Speaker 4: needed to verify how good you were.
- 51:59Speaker 5: We didn't.
- 52:00Speaker 6: You're in the booty. Yeah, I know. I know exactly
- 52:10Speaker 6: what I was getting myself. And then I figured out
- 52:12Speaker 6: that they played me. I'm like, win this game. Let's
- 52:18Speaker 6: go win the game that has some fun.
- 52:20Speaker 4: Let me ask let me ask this question, let me
- 52:22Speaker 4: ask you this question. And I hate and I hate
- 52:27Speaker 4: to kind of I hate to compare players in different generations.
- 52:33Speaker 4: But when you when you when you go, when you
- 52:36Speaker 4: reflect back on how you ran, and maybe you didn't,
- 52:41Speaker 4: never really reflect on it, because it's just who you
- 52:43Speaker 4: were and what what you knew.
- 52:46Speaker 5: Did you ever consider like who who you look like
- 52:50Speaker 5: or who don't?
- 52:51Speaker 4: Okay, so you wouldn't know. I always say that you
- 52:56Speaker 4: who reminds me of yeah, Gale sayrs.
- 53:03Speaker 6: I can't argue with you. I'm not going to protest
- 53:07Speaker 6: on nothing.
- 53:09Speaker 4: And I hate to give it to you because we're friends,
- 53:11Speaker 4: and I hate for you to, you know, walk off
- 53:13Speaker 4: the show with with with too much confidence in you.
- 53:16Speaker 4: But Bron, that's when I go back and and and
- 53:18Speaker 4: you know, had seen clips and stuff like that, like
- 53:21Speaker 4: man like I'm like like, I'm like I would watch
- 53:25Speaker 4: you like in the North South when I and and
- 53:28Speaker 4: of course, just so you you all know, the person
- 53:30Speaker 4: who got the front the front cover of the newspaper
- 53:34Speaker 4: after we won the North South game was me.
- 53:37Speaker 2: I read them what time my drip drop?
- 53:46Speaker 4: I had one run and they caught that one and
- 53:49Speaker 4: put it in the front.
- 53:50Speaker 5: Page in the paper. I might have been a bit
- 53:53Speaker 5: of running back to you. That's got the home cooking
- 54:01Speaker 5: on that one.
- 54:06Speaker 6: Lson, the big Charlton there, Charleston.
- 54:12Speaker 5: Maybe maybe I was meant to be a running back.
- 54:16Speaker 5: Maybe that's what they were trying to promote. Maybe, So
- 54:20Speaker 5: I don't know, my brother, we got to get out
- 54:24Speaker 5: of here.
- 54:25Speaker 4: I appreciate it, and I, like I said, I'm gonna
- 54:28Speaker 4: keep working on trying to get you back here soon.
- 54:30Speaker 5: So we'll talk about that again.
- 54:32Speaker 9: It's been great to have you on the podcast.
- 54:35Speaker 6: Thank you, Kirk, thank you, thank you all right, man,
- 54:39Speaker 6: you take care well, ladies and gentlemen.
- 54:41Speaker 5: I hope you enjoyed the show. And we ran our
- 54:44Speaker 5: time all the way.
- 54:45Speaker 4: To the limit, so we got to get out of here,
- 54:48Speaker 4: so we will get you again soon.
- 54:51Speaker 5: We're out of here.
