- 0:02All right, let's take it back.
- 0:05When you imagined homeschool,
- 0:07what did it look like?
- 0:09Is what you do now. What it looked like?
- 0:12I can assure you, mine did not look like what we do now.
- 0:16And it was really hard
- 0:19to have that realization and to separate those things.
- 0:23And it was even harder when I realized
- 0:26that the void between
- 0:30my ideal homeschool and my real homeschool.
- 0:34That that was where my guilt comes from.
- 0:37Homeschool guilt.
- 0:38Welcome back to making Everyday Magic.
- 0:40My name is Shanna and if you are new here we are a homeschooling family of four.
- 0:44We are knocking on that 10th year of homeschooling.
- 0:47And today I want to talk with you
- 0:49about separating homeschool idealism
- 0:53from realism.
- 1:00Before we go any further, please scroll down.
- 1:01Hit that big red subscribe button,
- 1:03turn on the bell for notifications, and give this video a thumbs up.
- 1:06As always, you can find me down in the comments
- 1:08or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 1:11And just so you know, because it's totally on topic
- 1:16next week from the time you're seeing this will be me sharing my
- 1:20my homeschool plans for fifth grade in ninth grade.
- 1:22So in like,
- 1:25I don't know, six months.
- 1:26Somebody check back and remind me about that separation between you and me
- 1:30and, realism and idealism, because, I mean, right now I've got ideas.
- 1:35I got, how's it going to go?
- 1:37I do not know, but we will.
- 1:39We will for sure figure it out.
- 1:41I know that you can relate.
- 1:43Right.
- 1:44You see anything? And it looks awesome.
- 1:46You see ten things, and they all look awesome.
- 1:48And you want to do them and you want to do them.
- 1:49Now, we've talked about that recently, and it all looks great
- 1:52and it all looks wonderful and it's so cool.
- 1:54And obviously everybody's going to love it and everybody's
- 1:56going to do these great jobs and look oh, here's a new art thing.
- 1:58And oh look at this class.
- 2:00We did that class too. And oh, there's this homeschool event during the day.
- 2:02We should do that too.
- 2:03And you have planned exactly
- 2:0714 years worth of homeschool stuff into three days.
- 2:11And that is, that is that is that is not possible.
- 2:14Okay. That is homeschool idealism, right?
- 2:17You think that you're going to have a Pinterest worthy room
- 2:20and it's going to be awesome and, it's going to smell like roses
- 2:24for some reason, and it will be good and it will be wonderful.
- 2:27And everybody's going to get up on time and we're all going to get started.
- 2:29And your kids are never going to have a hiccup in their learning journey.
- 2:31Nobody's going to be dyslexic.
- 2:32Everybody's going to read, well, nobody's going to need a snack.
- 2:34Definitely not 15 snacks.
- 2:35They definitely don't have to pee 47 times.
- 2:38It's going to be great. It's all going to go to plan.
- 2:39And that's how it works, right? Because this is this is homeschool.
- 2:42This is how school. This is how homeschool goes.
- 2:44Except that's idealism.
- 2:46And, realism is not idealism.
- 2:48Realism is that
- 2:50everybody needs like basically 100% the opposite of everything I just said.
- 2:54And that is where we actually live.
- 2:57The problem is, and it's it's just like a birth plan.
- 3:01It is just like a birth plan. Right?
- 3:03It's going to be whatever.
- 3:04And the baby is just going to fly out of there after one push.
- 3:07But in actuality you have like placental abruption
- 3:11and people have to have surgery and everybody almost dies.
- 3:14So it's just kind of like that where you wonder what happens.
- 3:18And, and then you have a weird grieving process.
- 3:23It is hard.
- 3:26Hard, especially when you're first starting.
- 3:28I like to think I'm a little better at it now, but I'm not.
- 3:31I like to think that I do a better job of keeping a handle on
- 3:34what is actually possible within the confines of both time and space.
- 3:39I don't, but if I did, then I would be better at this after my.
- 3:45I just told you, I have nine years of experience.
- 3:49So clearly.
- 3:50Clearly, I've gotten a handle on doing this.
- 3:52Right.
- 3:54But, like, if I had, I would recognize
- 3:59your ideal idealism and your realism.
- 4:04The further apart they are,
- 4:07the more space there is for homeschool guilt.
- 4:12And if you are new here, welcome.
- 4:14You don't know this yet.
- 4:16But everything you do makes you feel guilty because it is
- 4:20a wild decision that we have chosen to add
- 4:23our child's entire educational existence to the burden
- 4:27that is on our shoulders, that we already carry of, I don't know, keeping them
- 4:31alive and feeding them and housing them and hoping they grow up to be good people,
- 4:34and also hoping that the world isn't
- 4:36on fire by them because of global warming or war or whatever.
- 4:39And, and also we're going to teach them how to read.
- 4:42Yes. We're so good at this.
- 4:45So obviously, for those of us who have chosen to homeschool
- 4:50don't already have a problem with idealism, right.
- 4:55You're going to feel guilty.
- 4:59Is it socialization?
- 5:00Maybe that's why people keep bringing it up.
- 5:01Is it that they don't do something in the time
- 5:05or on grade level that they're supposed to?
- 5:07Probably. Probably down to,
- 5:09do they just hold their pencil?
- 5:10Weird.
- 5:10Because you don't know this yet, but you're going to stress about that.
- 5:14And down in the comments tell me, has anybody out there
- 5:18not stressed about like
- 5:21pencil holding hand placement or handwriting quality?
- 5:24If you have never stress about any of those, go away.
- 5:28You're not our people. Okay.
- 5:31There are things that I did not know
- 5:33I needed to worry about, that I found out and then were ready to,
- 5:37The space between the idealism and the realism is where homeschool get will live.
- 5:41Homeschool guilt parenting.
- 5:41Well, the whole thing.
- 5:45It is really hard to human.
- 5:49It is really hard to mother.
- 5:51It is really hard to homeschool.
- 5:54And it is.
- 5:55It is damn near impossible to do all of those things.
- 5:57And what you can't do is all of them great at the same time.
- 6:01But for whatever reason, our lovely little brains,
- 6:05especially our three and brains, seem to think that we can know.
- 6:08Okay, so now eight and brains think we can 3 a.m.
- 6:12brains question if we've ever done anything right.
- 6:15So those again the space between.
- 6:19It is our job
- 6:20as we're going to this planning season to.
- 6:25Be realistic okay.
- 6:28What does Coco Chanel say.
- 6:30Look in the mirror before you leave. Take off one thing.
- 6:32That's what we're going to do with our homeschool plans.
- 6:34Put a list of some days or one days.
- 6:37Not everything needs to be done now.
- 6:39Not everything needs to be done this year, okay?
- 6:40They don't need to do every single thing every year.
- 6:43They don't need to do every single thing every day.
- 6:45They don't need to do every single thing every week.
- 6:48They don't need to do every single thing right now.
- 6:50Okay?
- 6:50I am so guilty of finding the thing, sourcing the things,
- 6:54getting excited about the things,
- 6:56thinking my kids will love the things and they want free play.
- 6:59This is the perfect analogy actually.
- 7:01You know
- 7:01how your kids have a lot of playdates and you wind up like going to the zoo,
- 7:05and then you go to do this activity, and then you go to do this thing
- 7:08that you bought tickets for together.
- 7:10And what happens is your kids just want to run feral in a field
- 7:15because they just want to spend time together.
- 7:17They don't want to play an activity.
- 7:19They don't want to meet up with people that they aren't actually close with.
- 7:22They don't want to do that, okay?
- 7:25They want free time.
- 7:27Yeah, it's like that. Okay.
- 7:31I don't know how we do this.
- 7:32And maybe what we do is we book out hours a day for for free time
- 7:37and maybe what we do is we limit their toys.
- 7:42Yeah, I'm doing that.
- 7:44I don't know what it is.
- 7:45I don't know what the solution is, but I can tell you.
- 7:47And I can scream the warnings from the rooftops.
- 7:49Get your realism and your idealism closer together.
- 7:53And that does.
- 7:55That's not what I mean to say.
- 7:56I recognize the problem in that statement.
- 7:59Here is your realism. Here is your idealism.
- 8:01Bring your idealism to your realism.
- 8:03Do not bring your realism to your idealism.
- 8:06Everyone will perish.
- 8:08Okay, don't do that.
- 8:10Realism stays.
- 8:11Bring your ideal at one thing at a time, okay?
- 8:14One thing at a time. Don't start big.
- 8:17Just like every time we come back from a break,
- 8:19every time we restart, start with one big bite.
- 8:22You do that real well. You could take a second big bite.
- 8:25Can you do that? Okay.
- 8:26You throw on some fries.
- 8:28Don't do it all. Don't do it all right.
- 8:30Now you don't have to do it all.
- 8:32You don't need to do it all. Don't make yourself feel bad.
- 8:34Just do your best.
- 8:36I just I don't know how else to explain the realism and the idealism.
- 8:40They've got to get together.
- 8:41Okay?
- 8:41This happens with wedding budget and birth plan and home renovation
- 8:46and Pinterest boards and and and and and and and and and.
- 8:52Okay.
- 8:52I do not have Pottery Barn money, but I got Ikea money.
- 8:57Okay?
- 8:57My realism is Ikea.
- 8:59My idealism is Pottery Barn.
- 9:01Never the to show me what your home,
- 9:04what your life, what your home school looks like right now is good.
- 9:09It's good enough
- 9:11if you have
- 9:12happy people, if you have happy people making progress,
- 9:15if you're doing that mostly consistently, that's great.
- 9:19Before you jump off the deep end saying that you need to do
- 9:22all the things and grab all the things and buy all the things
- 9:26and do all the things, just remember what I said.
- 9:30Take one thing off before you walk out the house, okay?
- 9:35As I hope you find this helpful, entertaining or informative.
- 9:37If you did the scroll down, hit that big red subscribe button, turn
- 9:40on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up as always,
- 9:43you can write me down in the comments or over on Instagram.
- 9:46I think Everyday Magic let me know what was so I will take anything at all.
- 9:51What was your crazy? I could do that.
- 9:54But then you couldn't do that and I oh,
- 9:57I've got a lot because I am a DIY girly.
- 10:00I have replaced all kinds of things.
- 10:04I have demoed things.
- 10:05I have tile, the kitchen, I have painted, things I have made things.
- 10:10Just today I made a whole playbill.
- 10:13I have never done that before.
- 10:14I have taught myself pretty much everything I know how to do.
- 10:18Designed websites, this whole YouTube situation, all the things
- 10:23and rarely was it something I
- 10:26wish I've done again.
- 10:29My idealism and my realism and my idealism got real close, real fast.
- 10:34So, I'd love to hear what's your thing?
- 10:37What was your thing or what was your thing you started you like?
- 10:39Nope, that's not for me.
- 10:40I am so guilty like I do that I do that, especially when it comes to save money.
- 10:45It is girl, I should not be left alone.
- 10:47That is for sure.
- 10:49Anyways.
- 10:50So yeah, yeah, that's a good.
- 10:52That might be why I absolutely love group learning for my kids.
- 10:56Is that it just it's so much easier because I could do it
- 10:59a lot of more like one thing, instead of having to do a lot
- 11:02of little things or a lot for multiple people, like combining subjects,
- 11:07I think that is probably why it serves me so well.
- 11:11That and you know that that is actually the necessity of me Monday.
- 11:15It's because I just I needed to force myself.
- 11:21Right. My idealism was that we could do it all.
- 11:22We freaking can't. I can't.
- 11:26The reality of that mom on me Monday was that
- 11:29I needed to force myself
- 11:33to find a time to to just.
- 11:35It is sacred and that is where I am.
- 11:39I am focused and I am doing it because if not, this girl
- 11:44is trying to do 15,000 other things and I just, I literally cannot.
- 11:49And so for me,
- 11:51that was a place when my idealism got to my realism
- 11:54real fast and I changed things and I figured out the way to make it work.
- 11:58And that's the deal.
- 11:59You have to figure out what does work for you.
- 12:01How does it work? How is it working now?
- 12:04Do you have anything else you want to do? Absolutely love that.
- 12:06I've got tons of videos here on how to create your dream routine
- 12:08and what that looks like, but it all is based in that realism.
- 12:12What's it really like?
- 12:13What is really happening?
- 12:15How is it really going for you?
- 12:17What is honestly your pitfall?
- 12:19You have to get really honest with yourself.
- 12:21Not a lot of us are.
- 12:22We are all idealistic and we all idealize ourselves, good or bad.
- 12:28Very rarely are we grounded where we are.
- 12:32And so that space between is what makes you feel like.
- 12:35And I just there's no other way to say true story.
- 12:38Getting us closer together and taking honest, hard looks at what
- 12:41you are, where you are, what you want and how you're going to get there.
- 12:45Real possibilities.
- 12:47That's the difference.
- 12:48And that's the key
- 12:50entrance of a accountability.
- 12:52I guess.
