- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:11episodes five twenty five and five twenty six. Lost in the deep Sea,
- 0:16the straw hats get separated, and under sea volcanic eruption drifting into the Fishman
- 0:24Island. In these episodes, our friends actually reach Fishman Island, and I
- 0:30didn't think it was going to happen this soon. I am totally caught off
- 0:34guard. Also, under the sea is very very dangerous. Welcome to spoil
- 0:41Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very
- 1:03much to Florian for commissioning this episode, and thank you Florian for being very
- 1:08patient with me trying to get through some tech issues that I am having tonight.
- 1:14And apologies if any of those tech issues interrupted this recording. I am
- 1:19doing my very best, but I think maybe we're okay now. These episodes.
- 1:26I watched these twice. It was so funny. The other night,
- 1:29I was just like in this bummer mood and I was just like, one
- 1:32Piece sounds very comforting right now. So I went and watched it ahead of
- 1:34time, which I don't usually do, and I am I was actually I
- 1:42don't know if I want to say disappointed that we already reached Fishman Island,
- 1:46because I'm sure like Fishman Island is going to have its own whole cool thing
- 1:52going on. But I was enjoying the under the Sea travel so much that
- 1:59I I was genuinely surprised we already got here, Considering how much this show
- 2:06tends to draw certain things out, I just really thought it would milk the
- 2:09under the Sea journey for as long as possible. So caught off guard,
- 2:15but in a good way, kind of, I don't know. Also,
- 2:20really quickly, I know that there's like almost nobody here in the live but
- 2:23I just wanted to finally show off that I remember to go get my adorable
- 2:28stuffy of Chopper that I got given for Christmas and show how cute he is
- 2:32with his little star eyes. Isn't this a really really good little Chopper.
- 2:37I love him so much. So I saw him when I was like tidying
- 2:40yesterday. I was like, I'm gonna put him in my office now while
- 2:43I'm thinking about it so that I can show him because I just think he
- 2:45is so cute. Floria to saying, oh, Chopper, he's so I
- 2:51love. Whenever there is a character who gets those starry eyes if they make
- 2:55the stuffy with the starry eyes. I also have a Celeste the owl from
- 3:01Animal Crossing, and when she looks up at the sky and see stars,
- 3:05she gets the starry eyes too, and a surprising number of the stuffies do
- 3:08not give her starry eyes. And I'm like, that does have her charm.
- 3:13So yeah, Chopper my vip, I love him over here. He's
- 3:16gonna keep watch over me during this recording. So okay, this episode,
- 3:25the first of the two, we have the recap, of course, of
- 3:30everything that's going on with the Kraken throwing the ship around, and our guys
- 3:38had just left the ship in their little I can't remember what they're called,
- 3:43but they're like those individual bubbles that they can use, and they were supposed
- 3:46to wear ropes to keep them attached to the sonny, and immediately all of
- 3:53them just completely disregard those ropes, which is just it's so like completely on
- 3:59brand. I can't even be mad. It's almost like giving them the ropes
- 4:02to begin with was just a fool's Errand you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 4:09it's just there comes a point where it's sort of like, look,
- 4:13you had to know there was no point in doing this in the first place,
- 4:17and they decide to like go deal with this crack in just like a
- 4:25straight up fistfight type thing, and Sanji goes in and he hits it with
- 4:32grill shoot is the way it's translated here. A kick that lights up like
- 4:41a whole tentacle of this thing, which, considering how huge the tentacles are,
- 4:46is still pretty impressive. But like, in order to do this,
- 4:50he had to leave his bubble. I'm not entirely sure why that is.
- 4:56Because they are able to run within their bubbles like they're running in the ocean,
- 5:01so to speak. I don't know how better to say that, So
- 5:04I'm not really sure if they can like move their feet that much to sort
- 5:09of run, why the kick has to be done outside of the bubble,
- 5:15But whatever it is, he does the kick, turns around and starts to
- 5:19leave and finds himself like outside of it, and Zorro then steps in with
- 5:28six paths his technique and he slices up another one of its tentacles in six
- 5:35different pieces, which I really felt bad about. I was like, you
- 5:41guys know, especially later on when it's kind of been cowed and tamed.
- 5:46I was just like, oh, but you kind of tentacle up into pieces
- 5:49like this sucks. And Zorro is reflecting on the fact that, like the
- 5:55past couple of years, all he has done is fight, and he says
- 6:00it sounds awful when I like say it like that, but I'm really grateful
- 6:05for it. And yet he says, I still haven't surpassed him yet,
- 6:13So two years that's not that long not having surpassed him. I would hope
- 6:17not if you get surpassed him in only two years, I feel like that
- 6:20wouldn't say much for his reputation anyway, you know what I'm saying. So
- 6:26it's all right. But anyway, everybody who is like on the ship is
- 6:31really impressed with the two of them. And you know, at one point,
- 6:36I think it's oos Up who is just like, oh my god,
- 6:39Asanji went so fast, I couldn't even seem like, this is just so
- 6:44awesome. Loofy meanwhile, is having a similar reaction to me, where he's
- 6:50like, I told you not to like hurt him because I wanted him to
- 6:55work for us. Basically, so he does gum gum and it's elephant Gun,
- 7:02which does seem appropriate for a kraken, I have to say, And
- 7:08he swings this fist that is the size of the kraken's head, which is
- 7:14really saying something. And everybody had been impressed with Soanjy and Zoro's progress,
- 7:23but when they see what it is Loofy was just able to do, they
- 7:27are truly like shook. They get those like white eyes kind of thing going
- 7:31on. Meanwhile, the kraken who has fallen backward, there's like some spot
- 7:41And I don't really get what's meant to be happening here because as far as
- 7:45I know, there are no pockets like this on an actual squid or octopus.
- 7:50They eat with a beak on their underside, So I don't really understand
- 7:56what it's supposed to be that's happening here. But there was a shark that
- 8:01was like stuck somehow in a tentacle. I don't know it. It's a
- 8:07weird, like the way this is illustrated. I couldn't understand what it was.
- 8:11But this little shark is adorable. He's wearing a little T shirt and
- 8:16comes out and like thanks them for helping him, and then like just swims
- 8:22away and honestly, this little shark guy. What a treasure. He looks
- 8:28so cute. I want to be his friend. He looks familiar. I
- 8:31feel like, if we haven't met him before, I've seen a cartoon like
- 8:37him before, something like that. But yeah, so so he just thanks
- 8:41them and then he takes off, and I have to assume that, you
- 8:45know, eventually we're going to reach a point where he's like instrumental in helping
- 8:50them because he remembers that they helped him this one time, and it's going
- 8:52to be like a whole thing. And just for the record, like,
- 8:56I don't have any problem with that, I don't when I say this sort
- 8:58of I'm not trying to be dismissive of like, oh, of course,
- 9:01this very predictable thing, Like I don't mean that. I mean, you
- 9:05know, in stories like this, that's what you do. You set up
- 9:09that somebody has done one person a good turn, and that way it comes
- 9:13back and you can circle things around later. So this is when our boys,
- 9:22all in their individual bubbles, are like, okay, let's go back
- 9:24to the sonny. The current is beginning to pull us in, and the
- 9:28current has even pulled the Kraken down at this point, and they turn like
- 9:31they're gonna be able to just swim back, and they can't. They are
- 9:35pulled down. Meanwhile, Frankie is getting onto the you know, the deck
- 9:41of the Sunny and like trying to chase them down, and everybody is flying
- 9:46all over the place because they are just pointed like there. The ship is
- 9:50like vertical. So after they catch up, Frankie just like starts rolling around
- 9:56the deck because there is no way to stay on his f and the whole
- 10:03like ride down, I'm thinking, well, maybe they'll catch up with their
- 10:07friends and it'll be fine, And they wind up actually coming back to the
- 10:11ship sooner than I was thinking they might, because I was expecting the under
- 10:15the sea journey to take longer than it did. I figured them being separated
- 10:20was gonna be a whole whole thing. Did you get what I'm saying,
- 10:24Like, because this is what often happens with the straw Hats, is they
- 10:30arrive somewhere in a group and then something occurs to separate them all and then
- 10:33they each have to deal with their own like villain and find their way back
- 10:41to each other. So I kind of thought that was what we were going
- 10:45to wind up getting here was like the under the Sea journey would turn into
- 10:50its own whole arc before we even got to Fishman Island, and that our
- 10:54friends were going to be like each dealing with different threats and finding their way
- 11:01back to the Sonny in the end. But yeah, it's it's like the
- 11:09factor that I keep forgetting is that unexpectedly the show wants us to take seriously
- 11:18their lack of oxygen, and I am genuinely, like constantly surprised at the
- 11:26fact that this is meant to matter, because the sunny, like the whole
- 11:31thing is just so outlandish that I wouldn't care if there were no rules at
- 11:35all at this point, you know what I'm saying. But I also can't
- 11:41deny I really do appreciate things being grounded enough to have some rules. So
- 11:48I just sort of ignore the whole issue of air supply and all of this,
- 11:52because like the physics of this don't make sense at all. And then
- 11:56it's brought up like doing one of the he uh jumps that we wind up
- 12:01having to do a few times later, that Frankie with the ship, he's
- 12:05like escaping things, it's using up their actual air, and that's like going
- 12:11to be a problem for them. I keep being like, oh, oh,
- 12:13okay, so that's like a factor we actually have to worry about anyway.
- 12:20Okay, So in this moment, we are our ship is back up,
- 12:26and everybody is standing still on the deck, and oos Up is like,
- 12:30what's everybody looking so sad about? Like, you shouldn't be scared.
- 12:33We're safe. The ship is upright, we're on its deck. Shit's okay.
- 12:39And then he starts to be like, wait, why is it so
- 12:41cold? And Robin says that all three of the boys are missing, and
- 12:46we just have to hope the monster didn't tear them apart in her usual optimistic
- 12:52way. And this is the first of the many threats that we like encounter
- 13:01of the deep sea is an anglerfish. This thing again with the fact that
- 13:07like shit underwater is just crazy. Anyway, It's just wild that these really
- 13:13exist. There was a really fucking cool Halloween costume I saw one year.
- 13:20Two girls that were there. I think they were going to a like a
- 13:24Halloween rave, and so they did these like anglerfish costumes with the lights and
- 13:31they looked so fucking cool. Highly recommend looking that up because those photos were
- 13:37like at the top of the Google results, so I'm sure you'll be able
- 13:41to find them easily because they got a lot of attention since they were so
- 13:43cool. Oh, Florian says, just want to say, I started Doctor
- 13:48Who. So far I like it and it reminds me of One Piece in
- 13:52a distant way, definitely the thing. I'm not going to get into a
- 13:58whole Doctor Who thing here. I'm not trying to like yuck anybody's yum,
- 14:03as they say. But my issue with Doctor Who is that it takes itself
- 14:11too seriously a lot of the time. One Piece gets serious occasionally, but
- 14:16mostly does not take itself seriously at all. It knows what it is,
- 14:20and that's the key to the tone being something that I can deal with.
- 14:26But Doctor Who often tries to be like preachy or moral in some way that
- 14:33isn't actually like sustained in the in the dialogue or the plot, and it
- 14:39just gets very up its own ass, and I couldn't deal A lot of
- 14:45the time. It was just like, look, guys, if you are
- 14:48going to have him just pull out a sonic screwdriver that magically solves this entire
- 14:52problem, why do I care about the problem. It's not it's silly.
- 14:56I feel like one piece is like don't come at me, but like better
- 15:00written overall than Doctorue. And I'm just I'm just saying, so this the
- 15:09The other thing that we have dealing with here is the fucking jellyfish, which
- 15:15are They're glowing and have like, you know, those little lights in them,
- 15:18and because it's so dark down here, they have this effect almost of
- 15:24like stars in the sky, which Chopper starts to get very entranced by,
- 15:31and it's just like, man, these are so cool. And as they
- 15:37come down towards the surface of the deck, he almost reaches out and touches
- 15:43one, and Robin has to tell him, like, don't touch them.
- 15:46They're probably venomous, which I really would have expected him to know, but
- 15:50I don't know why. I guess I just expected that he would know stuff
- 15:52about like all animals, which is really not fair. I also the thing
- 16:00with jellyfish, for me, I have always found them like very fascinating.
- 16:06I think a lot of kids do, just the fact that they are they
- 16:08look so graceful and harmless, and yet they are potentially like actually lethal and
- 16:17yet made out of material that is so delicate. It's just that contradiction that
- 16:22can really catch your imagination. And there is a there's a book I'm covering
- 16:30now, the Vorkosagan Saga, where it's it's traveling from different planets, and
- 16:37at one point she's on a planet with these creatures that are filled with a
- 16:42type of helium and float through the air like jellyfish. And this guy is
- 16:48standing watching one and it comes down and lands on his face and it has
- 16:53like acid in its tentacles and begins to like burn his face up. And
- 17:00it was just the most terrifying like imagery. It was so awful, and
- 17:07so now that for some reason them being on land in that narrative, Now,
- 17:14when I look at them in the water habitat, even in like a
- 17:18cartoon, I keep picturing that guy is getting his face burned off, and
- 17:22I'm just like, ooh, not pretty. These are scary. These are
- 17:25very very scary. Also, we get to see a new thing from Frankie.
- 17:30He has these spotlights built in and they come out of his nipples.
- 17:38I lost my shit. That fucking cracked. I was not expecting that at
- 17:45all, and I don't know why I wasn't, because Frankie's whole thing is
- 17:51just being outrageous, like I would not be surprised if at one point he's
- 17:56got like an actual cannon in his keeney briefs that just like sticks out like
- 18:02a giant dick, because that just feels like what we're kind of doing sometimes
- 18:06with him, and I have no problem with it. It is these these
- 18:11actual headlights, amazing perfect, flawless. So anyway, lots and lots of
- 18:21creatures that they are encountering, and they all have sort of different not our
- 18:27crew being they, but the fish. Some of them can't seem to see
- 18:33them very well because their eyesight is so like underdeveloped. Others because of the
- 18:38darkness, have highly developed eyesight. So it's sort of like anybody's guess who
- 18:45is going to turn out to be an issue and who isn't. But yeah,
- 18:51this is when we have to use the coup of Burst the first time
- 18:53and get away from the jellyfish that has draped itself over the top of the
- 18:59ship. And it just keeps like they keep encountering things that they need to
- 19:04use the coupda Burst for and so they're using up their own air supply every
- 19:10time they do this. They finally get to a point where they straight up
- 19:12can't use that as an escape tool at all, and are essentially stuck.
- 19:18It's a good thing that they wind up as close to Fishman Island as they
- 19:22do. Oh my god, I love Brooke is over here, you guys.
- 19:29I live for Brooks weird like monologues. Who's he talking to? Who
- 19:36knows? It doesn't matter. He says, Oh, you're curious as to
- 19:41how I can see when I don't have eyes? Of course you are,
- 19:47but you really want to know the answer, and then gets real close to
- 19:52his eye and he laughs and says, drum roll, it's a secret.
- 20:00What are we doing? What is this? I don't care what it is.
- 20:06It's great. I love it, Brooke, bless your heart. I'm
- 20:11so If it just weren't for him asking to see panties all the time,
- 20:17Brooke would be like the perfect character. I would love him so like there
- 20:22would be no qualms about it. As I sit right now, Chopper is
- 20:30my guy because he's so pure. Brooke just manages to like eek into that
- 20:36real creepy territory a lot, but I can like make myself forget that and
- 20:41then he turns into my favorite. So it's just sort of you know,
- 20:45I just wish that we could let it go. Unfortunately, there's a whole
- 20:48thing later with him and Mermaids, and I don't like him and Soanji both
- 20:55being on the same wavelength at all. I just don't want the two of
- 20:57them. I don't Sanji doesn't need any encouragement. That's where I'm coming from
- 21:03pretty much. I don't want anybody on the Sunny to be coming at women
- 21:08with the same energy in any sense as the energy that Sanji brings. And
- 21:14I almost feel like I want to blame Sonjy for Brook's behavior, even though
- 21:18that's super not fair. I want to pretend that Brooke is like better than
- 21:22this and that it's just Sonjy like influencing him negatively, and like that's not
- 21:29what's happening. But I just want Brooke to be better. I want him
- 21:33to be better than he is. So okay, the crew again, they're
- 21:41all just like, I don't know where we need to head. How can
- 21:44we even like know that when we got pulled down where we went in the
- 21:48same like general direction, there's no way that you know. And then finally,
- 21:56and I had been sort of wondering this vaguely in the background, but
- 21:59I hadn't actually put words to it. They notice that wet hair Caribou is
- 22:06gone, and we get this sequence that is so it's so silly. So
- 22:12this dude, he's a logiate type, and I guess he turns into mud.
- 22:18I don't know. I don't know if we actually have gotten an explanation
- 22:22from him about it yet, but he has pretended to be tied up effectively
- 22:30to get them all thinking that they really have him on the back foot.
- 22:36And he then waits for all of them to be distracted and hides in a
- 22:42barrel on the ship so he can bide his time until it's safe for him
- 22:48to jump out and attack again, and then I guess take over the whole
- 22:55ship. His plan is basically like, I'm going to let them keep steering
- 23:03the ship because I need a crew in order to power this thing, so
- 23:10I'll at least wait until we get somewhere safe, and then I'm going to
- 23:15make my presence known because now that the three best fighters aren't here, I
- 23:21don't really have anything to worry about. And I didn't even think of the
- 23:26fact that he would consider the rest of the crew to be so little a
- 23:36threat. And I mean, I kind of understand his thinking in this way.
- 23:41But it's just funny looking at like just merely Frankie alone. You really
- 23:48think that you don't have anything to worry about up against Frankie. And there's
- 23:52five more or four more? How anymore? Yeah, Chopper usop Nami,
- 23:59Brooke, Robin and yeah, five more, sir. Those three fighters aren't
- 24:04the problem that you need to be worrying about. You have a whole crew
- 24:11of badasses here that you just are acting like you could take solo. Why
- 24:19on Earth? And I guess he really believes that he's gonna be able to
- 24:23just like crawl around in the dark of night and like maybe take them out
- 24:29one by one, and that way there wouldn't have to be any sort of
- 24:33like like real fight, that he could get them while their guard was down.
- 24:41But anyway, it's really fun because he's over here peering at everybody from
- 24:45inside this barrel, really really feeling himself and thinking that he has the perfect
- 24:51plan. What a shame I didn't have the chance to kill straw Hat with
- 24:56my own hands, But no one will ever doubt he's dead once I come
- 25:00back with the rest of his crew members heads. And as he's saying this
- 25:06to himself. It's unclear to me whether he like speaks out loud. I
- 25:10don't think he does, because we get a look at him at one point
- 25:14and his mouth doesn't seem to be moving, but the way that Frankie is
- 25:18looking at him, it feels like Frankie can hear his thoughts. And I
- 25:22don't think that's happening, but you know what I'm saying, Like there's an
- 25:26expression on his face that it And it's so fun because Frankie is just coming
- 25:30up next to him as this dude has this vicious gleam in his eye of
- 25:36like pure malice, and meanwhile Frankie is like the fuck. So he comes
- 25:44up next to him and he says, if I killed them all now,
- 25:48there wouldn't be anyone left to sail the ship, and then what would I
- 25:51do? So I'll let them live while they can still be useful to me.
- 25:55Once we land on Fishman Island, though, I'm gonna slaughter you down
- 25:59to the last man. And he laughs. And see this is when Frankie's
- 26:03eyes get big, and so it really felt for me like he was hearing
- 26:08him. I don't know, I don't know, but yeah, he turns.
- 26:14He just sees Frankie looking at him, and then he slowly lowers the
- 26:19lid of the barrel again as if he wasn't seen, like he just faked
- 26:26him out, and rather than like grab him up, Frankie just seals the
- 26:36barrel. Uh genius, I love it. Just keep him in there,
- 26:44he rightfully figures out, like, oh yeah, the ropes don't do anything
- 26:48because he's not a solid so I can I don't need to worry about tying
- 26:56him up again. Just keep him in a fucking container like he's a sourdoughs
- 27:00starter or something. I fucking loved this so much. It's such a Wet
- 27:07Hair Caribou was so like unlikable right out of the gate, Like some of
- 27:15these villains, you know, they come in and they have a certain energy
- 27:21and you're like, oh, yeah, I know he's a bad guy,
- 27:22but he's fun or you know there's something cool about his design or his power
- 27:27is really wild, you know. Wet Hair Caribou just felt like a drag
- 27:33and Florian talk with me about this when we did the live together. But
- 27:37that he has this, like, you know, a real kind of real
- 27:41world creepy factor that a lot of the villains don't have, and so I
- 27:48expected a certain type of showing from him that I am not getting, and
- 27:55I enjoy it a lot. I am really happy that he has turned out
- 28:00to be such a disappointment, and I'm putting that in quotes because I am
- 28:04not disappointed at all. This is great, like him being basically shown up
- 28:11almost instantly upon arriving on the ship, and then everything he has done since
- 28:15then is like pointless and fails. It's great. I want more of it.
- 28:22I never want him to get back into a place of power again.
- 28:29I want him to keep thinking he is one upping them and keep being brought
- 28:34crashing back down to Earth. It's very satisfying. There are some villains for
- 28:40whom this wouldn't work, and I would just be like, why am I
- 28:42supposed to be like afraid of or invested in this person? And then there
- 28:48are people like this where you just made me despise him so much, so
- 28:52quickly, so instantly that the sort of petty schadenfreud schadenfreud that you get seeing
- 29:03them slap down is like sustaining in this very chewy, full meal type of
- 29:11way. So yeah, I am I just the first time that I watched
- 29:19this too, even though it was animated very clearly that Frankie can see him.
- 29:27Because the animation in this show can be sort of symbolic, sometimes it
- 29:33can occasionally trip me up whether something is like happening very literally the way it
- 29:38looks like it's happening or not. So there was a time with the first
- 29:42first viewing of this episode that Frankie seeing him and his face sort of being
- 29:48in the background. I got a little confused, and I thought for a
- 29:51moment that it was Cariboo thinking about Frankie, and so the image of Frankie
- 29:56in the background was indicative of who he was imagining he was going to have
- 30:00to fight or take down first or whatever. And I was like then started
- 30:06to be like, oh wait, no, I think he can see him.
- 30:07And so when I watched it the second time, I got to appreciate
- 30:11a lot more how soon Frankie spots him, and how like there is no
- 30:18ceremony about locking him inside that barrel, and he says, literally, if
- 30:25he wasn't so stupid, we would have been in real trouble. But yeah,
- 30:30he's like a pile of mud in there, and it must be a
- 30:33devil fruit power of some kind. He was giving us a false sense of
- 30:36security because he could have escaped at any time. And meanwhile behind him,
- 30:41the barrel is like hopping up and down, and he calls Frankie, the
- 30:48guy in the banana hammock, I really do like that banana hammock is being
- 30:52used. I am curious what banana hammock is in Japanese. What's that sound
- 30:59like? So all of a sudden, we have a new change in temperature.
- 31:07Everybody had been very cold recently, and now all of a sudden it's
- 31:11starting to get hot. And they look around and they see what seems to
- 31:17be smoke. And at first everybody's like, that doesn't make any sense underwater,
- 31:23and Nami is the one who's like, no, no, no,
- 31:26that is actually quite possible. And she sees these stacks, which again this
- 31:32is also a real thing. This is a volcanic area. There are there
- 31:40are heat and gases and magma trapped underneath, and they are coming out of
- 31:47these like chimney looking things. It's crazy, and so it is causing everything
- 31:53to get quite hot temperature all over the place. Here. This is when
- 31:57we begin with another like series of Couda bursts and it's really started to give
- 32:07me a little bit of anxiety knowing that, like our air supply is dependent
- 32:13on this, that they had to use it over and over and over again.
- 32:17Meanwhile, the fact that they're having to do the Coudi bursts means that
- 32:22they're traveling in such a way that it might be even harder for them to
- 32:27reunite with their friends. And they start to get like, you know,
- 32:30how are we supposed to even find them again because they've been blown so off
- 32:34course? But uh, as we see that winds up being not a problem.
- 32:38So this is this is when the angler fish finally shows up. I
- 32:42said it earlier, but I was jumping ahead a little bit, and the
- 32:46angler fish like it's so big, and it really does look like it's going
- 32:51to eat the whole ship. And then behind it you see a person.
- 32:59I don't know what this. The word that is used here is c bonds
- 33:07b o n ze. I'm gonna look this up. Bonds a Japanese or
- 33:13Chinese Buddhist monk oh okay, because when he said it, I wasn't watching
- 33:21it with subtitles. The dub I used to watch with the subtitles to just
- 33:27see the difference, and I stopped doing that because I did find it a
- 33:30little distracting, and so I was like, I'm I can't be hearing him
- 33:36right, like, I don't know what word he's saying, but okay,
- 33:39it is apparently a figure from Japanese folklore. Okay, okay, that makes
- 33:49sense, and that sort of ties in with like the whole concept of the
- 33:52flying Dutchman as well, like these folk stories that have to do with the
- 33:55ocean and just sort of anything that you've heard of that seems interesting. You'll
- 34:00just make it be real in this that makes sense to me actually, And
- 34:07the way that this like plays out is that this being is reprimanding its little
- 34:16uh fish for trying to eat the ship because it knows that it is not
- 34:23supposed to do that. It punches the fish in the head and says,
- 34:28that's naughty. You know better, and caro, you're not allowed to eat
- 34:32ships. And it's definitely like the same voice as the woman who does chopper,
- 34:37I'm pretty sure, so coming out of the mouth of this like humongous
- 34:44person, it's very very weird. But despite the fact that this creature helps
- 34:51them in the moment and keeps the angler fish from eating them. It is
- 34:54not actually on their side. I thought it was going to turn out to
- 34:59be like, oh, we've I met a new buddy, but instead we
- 35:02have a new ship that shows up. And this ship is so cool,
- 35:07you guys. I love the intro to this So it materializes out of the
- 35:13dark. There are all of these like little details about it and the way
- 35:20that it's sort of rotting, and the curved teeth on the skull that's on
- 35:25the front of it and everything. It looks so awesome and as it's coming
- 35:34out of the dark, the song that the captain is singing is the Dead
- 35:40Man Tell No Tales. It is so high drama. I loved it the
- 35:46most. Like it happens a lot in this show that somebody will show up
- 35:50and I will be sort of like, that's not really you know that the
- 35:57reaction that everybody else has seems to need to be out of proportion to how
- 36:00impressive this person's swag actually is. But this one, I was like,
- 36:07no, no, no, it's a It's a combo of the the look
- 36:10of the ship, the song itself, the effect that they put on the
- 36:17voice that is singing the song as well, because they make it this very
- 36:21sort of echoing. You know, dead men tell no tales, and dead
- 36:28men have no deep deeds. I pluck the rings right off their hands within
- 36:31these shadowy seas, dead men have no regrets and no tears left to weep.
- 36:39I'll pluck the crowns right off their heads. Within this cold, black
- 36:44deep, sunken treasures free for the taking. A king of pirates in the
- 36:50making, I leave my enemies weeping and shaking. Vender Decan is my name,
- 36:58and these long lost riches I do claim. And this is all come,
- 37:05you know, as it's coming at them, and I love that.
- 37:07At one point, we've just got Brooke looking at the skulls saying is that
- 37:12me? And I was like, Brook, I feel like that's racist.
- 37:15Not all skulls look the same. They don't all look like you. Okay,
- 37:19it's not always about you. But yeah, this is when he says
- 37:23it's a ghost ship and it Oh man, I'm so sorry, guys.
- 37:31I'm just getting distracted by the animation because Oosup slaps him for being scared of
- 37:37a ghost ship when he himself is a giant skeleton. And when he slapped,
- 37:43he just does a perfect pirouet and poses and then just says, you
- 37:47can't get with these moves. And it's an unexpected, like weird little moment
- 37:51that did catch me. And then all of a sudden you have a little
- 37:57flashback to everybody adding the ghost ship that Brooke was on, bless him,
- 38:02which is what later on Frankie brings up. Is like, you, guys,
- 38:07we all thought it was a ghost ship with Brooke. Then we found
- 38:09out that there was like a perfectly reasonable explanation there probably is for this too.
- 38:15Everybody just needs to calm down. It's not a big deal. But
- 38:21yeah, the the the sea Bonds evidently like works for this dude, this
- 38:29cap Vanderdecker. I don't know why or in what like how this this relationship
- 38:38became what it is, but uh, the sea Bounce is like waving down
- 38:47the ship, and we find we get like a very brief moment of the
- 38:53mouth of this captain as he is like saying to the sea bonds, you
- 38:59know, I don't want to cut the treasure out of your stomach, so
- 39:05no eating it, which is just a grim thing to say to somebody anyway.
- 39:14But we don't actually see the captain other than that fate that like mouth
- 39:20while it's talking and then the hand. At one point it points its finger
- 39:24and we see its hand and the sea bonds. He tells him to knock
- 39:35the ship out, just to give it a real good whack. So he
- 39:38goes to do that, but then unexpectedly gets interrupted by the Kraken, who
- 39:45is on our side now, surprise, And because it has lots of tentacles,
- 39:51it can really beat the shit out of you, and so it's giving
- 39:54like gum gum gatling. Actually when it's going at him, I was delighted
- 40:01because I knew if this guy was here, then that meant the rest of
- 40:04the boys were here also. So problem solved and off to the side,
- 40:08Lufy says, okay, he's learned his lesson. That's enough, and the
- 40:14Kraken stops, and there's like a look on his face of like, oh
- 40:17god when Lufy tells him to stop, But then when he says good boy,
- 40:22he looks so happy. I was so conflicted here, guys, I
- 40:28really was like this Kraken had been a bad guy. I'm glad that we
- 40:31can make friends. I feel bad that he has been like beaten into intimidation
- 40:37of Lufy and pals, but also he was going to eat them. So
- 40:44you know, I'm just sort of all over the place here with how I
- 40:45feel about this. And that's the thing about like the concept of taming animals.
- 40:52You know, it's just the animal has to be in distress in order,
- 40:58like at the start of the whole thing, And so I don't love
- 41:01the concept of it, even if I can understand the necessity for it sometimes.
- 41:07But yeah, all of our guys are back, and Whenami is like,
- 41:12what the hell happened to you? Because they're all in the same bubble
- 41:15and just like packed in there like little fish inside a fish bowl, Zoro
- 41:21actually says they got lost. They're hopeless without me, and I was just
- 41:24like, oh my god, I don't know what happened to your brain,
- 41:30Zoro. That somebody else helping you find Sabaoudi again makes you think that you're
- 41:35not the guy who always gets lost. But you need to get back on
- 41:38reality, my friend, because this is ridiculous. Meanwhile, as he's coming
- 41:45in, Sanji has his face just going all over the place because he sees
- 41:51Robin and Nami, and so Chopper is like, I'm going to need to
- 41:55build up his tolerance using a series of like less stimulating pictures. You guys,
- 42:06this is so this is like it's fucked up, but it's really it
- 42:09really is funny that it's just like pictures of them just standing in jeans,
- 42:15you know, like and and later on you do see him rifling through the
- 42:21pictures getting very excited about all of them, even though we know that they're
- 42:25very tame. Actually it's like a weird straddling of perverse and wholesome in a
- 42:34weird way. And I just I'm not gonna try and harp on this too
- 42:39much at this point. I've made my feelings on it clear, I think,
- 42:44but I am just so deeply bummed out by the fact that Soanji has
- 42:52been made to be so disgusted by all of the people that were on the
- 43:00island with him. I keep I'm never sure whether I should say, like,
- 43:05are they trains women? Are they just cross dressing men? Like I'm
- 43:08not sure how I want to describe them, But I just really the fact
- 43:15that he seemed to be cool with them for a bit, it really got
- 43:19me like feeling like we were in a cool place in terms of the representation
- 43:23on the show. And then we went in this whole other direction and now
- 43:29it's like he's coming up against a krack and talking about how it's not even
- 43:34the ugliest monster that he's had to deal with, and it just it's such
- 43:39a shame. I know that it's like supposed to be a joke, but
- 43:45because of the world, it doesn't feel funny. It's just gross and transphobic
- 43:52and nasty and like it's just so ugly, you know. And so every
- 43:57time now that he's there's some kind of reference to these people as monsters or
- 44:05horror shows or something that's like just really really mean, and it's it really
- 44:10it's like undercutting my enjoyment of things a lot more than I would have expected
- 44:16because it's happening so often. If it were happening like a lot more in
- 44:22the background, I could maybe overlook it. But he's such he's whenever we're
- 44:28in a fight, he's one of the main guys to jump up. And
- 44:30his whole plot right now is how much hornier even than usual he is.
- 44:37And so I feel like I just keep getting beaten over the head with all
- 44:43of this, like all of these transphobic jokes and reactions and the fucking upskirting
- 44:49of that girl that he was like making sure had the real parts, like
- 44:54ew, it's all just so there's like a violence to it that I find
- 45:00really upsetting, and so I just I just wanted to like say that here
- 45:05and let it go in terms of talking about it anymore. But I just
- 45:09really I wanted to underscore it because there was something about the scene here when
- 45:14he goes to fight the crack and in the way that he's talking about them
- 45:17that it really like pushed me over the edge from being like this is annoying
- 45:22to like, Okay, you know what, fucking stop it, and being
- 45:27like genuinely angry about it because we just didn't have to be here. You
- 45:30know, we could have had him super horny for women and not calling these
- 45:36other people monsters. You could have done both. It could have been fine.
- 45:42And just the lack of imagination there to have him be on our side
- 45:50for a minute and then it and when I say our side, I mean
- 45:53the side of people who are decent human beings. To get my hope's up
- 46:00about that, thinking that he had seen the light and then sort of just
- 46:05yank it away. It just feels even more disappointing because I saw what we
- 46:09could have had so Florian says, Yeah, as I said, this joke
- 46:17will sadly stay for some more episodes, but will get better in some episodes.
- 46:22Okay, Yeah, I just, like I said, I don't want
- 46:24to beat a dead horse here. You guys know how I feel about this.
- 46:28But the particular stuff in this episode, I just found, like I
- 46:34said, the word violent started to come up for me in a way that
- 46:37felt really alarming. So anyway, yeah, his whole thing is going to
- 46:44be that we have got to get his tolerance up because he isn't going to
- 46:50be able to deal with hot mermaids. He is going to lose all of
- 46:53his blood and die. Meanwhile, they land on the deck and there's a
- 47:00very strange scene here where Brooke is just sort of singing in the background while
- 47:06Loofy collapses on the deck. Robin and Chopper are like talking at the same
- 47:10time. It's a it's a weird scene of like everybody sort of talking over
- 47:15each other and there being a sense of chaos, and I just, I
- 47:21don't know, I felt like it was supposed to be giving me a feeling
- 47:25that I wasn't getting it. It just felt like there was too much happening
- 47:29all at once. But anyway, So their friend, the Kraken, picks
- 47:37up the ship and begins to carry it away. The Dutchman pirates are like,
- 47:44all right, we're gonna we're gonna chase after him. But then it
- 47:49seems something else comes up and he's like, never mind, we don't want
- 47:52this smoke after all. So there's like a sort of I hesitate to call
- 47:57it the horizon because like we're under one, but there's a red glow that
- 48:04begins to appear. And this is when Nami is like, oh, okay,
- 48:09yeah, this is the volcano straight ahead, and the Dutchman pirates are
- 48:17like, Captain, we can't go for We've got to get the fuck out
- 48:21of here, and he's like, yeah, yeah, you're right, you're
- 48:22right. I should mention too, considering that it's like being talked of as
- 48:28if it is a ghost ship. We see actual people, like they're alive
- 48:31on there. I think they look alive, they're gray. I don't know
- 48:37if it's maybe like some of the people without Shadows that Maria made and they've
- 48:40learned to live underwater. That would be interesting, but uh, Surumee is
- 48:46the name of the Kraken, and they were about to ask him to like
- 48:51carry the ship as quickly away as possible from the volcano, and then when
- 48:54they look over, he's already doing it. And I think that it's like
- 49:00Usub who says something like it's sort of embarrassing being so big and that afraid,
- 49:07but why he would die as well? So what if he's big?
- 49:12I do love Robin, just like to herself saying he runs terribly. I
- 49:16don't know why she is so flat for me so much at the time,
- 49:22but that one line, it was delivered in just the right kind of flat
- 49:28and it was so extra funny because of that he runs terribly. I wanted
- 49:36to ask Zoro calls soany mouthbrow at this point, I don't know what that
- 49:45means mouthbrow? What is happening there? I was really really confused by that.
- 49:54I don't like his the curly. There's nothing mouthlike about it. I
- 50:00don't Or maybe he's talking about like mouthlike in combo, like he talks too
- 50:05much and he's got crazy eyebrows. I don't know. I don't know what
- 50:08it is, but it was a weird comment that like didn't make a lot
- 50:13of sense to me. MOS's head. Now that one makes sense, I
- 50:15get what you're doing with that one. But anyway, so, yeah,
- 50:21the kraken is racing them away, and you can see things like beginning to
- 50:25shake because we're about to have the explosion of magma. And they have gotten
- 50:30like a little ways away, but it's still close enough that it's a problem,
- 50:34you know, Loofy. Of course, it's not a problem for him.
- 50:37He's having a great time. He's just flying through the air here.
- 50:42But you see it like melting all of the rock around them, and it
- 50:46increases the temperature of the water and everything, so that they start to be
- 50:51like, are we are we gonna get like poached? Like what's happening here?
- 50:58And the fact that all of them are running at the same time,
- 51:00they begin to sort of like float off. The Dutch pirates, I was
- 51:07just thinking the same thing. Brooke chimes in and says, their ship is
- 51:13flying. Is that good or bad? And that was my question also.
- 51:15I was like, I feel like that's got to be a good thing.
- 51:17You're getting off the ocean floor where I am assuming the danger is primary,
- 51:24but also there's the issue of like heat rising and maybe if the heat is
- 51:31lifting him, I don't know. And then the worst you guys this kraken,
- 51:37you know how, I'm just so mixed on him. They're talking about
- 51:43whether he's going to actually be able to help them get away and or whether
- 51:47or not they're going to get cooked, and Loofy says, well, you
- 51:57know, I think that he'll be able to Like, riding him is really
- 52:01fun, but eating him might be even better. And I absolutely draw the
- 52:09line at this poor creature being afraid that Lufi is going to eat him.
- 52:20That's not okay. Look if he enjoys being patted on the head and told
- 52:25that he was a good kraken for doing things, far be it from me.
- 52:30Fine, if he is running away from a volcano because he himself is
- 52:35already in danger and he's carrying them with him, because it's just like I'll
- 52:37just do that, too, fine, But being threatened with like I'm going
- 52:42to literally eat you. I just hated it. I really did. His
- 52:47little face. It was it was it was troubling, you know, I
- 52:52just felt so bad for him. So anyway, this is when Nami says,
- 52:57Okay, keep going straight ahead, I have an eye, and they're
- 53:00still being chased by this lava. This goes on for a little way and
- 53:05then she says, okay, now jump into the trench that we see,
- 53:08because there's like a sort of cliff that they come up against, and you
- 53:13know, all of them are just like, uh, really okay, and
- 53:17Kraken obeys jumps right off of the side and they're floating in mid air.
- 53:29Usual suspects here, screaming their heads off, oos up and chopper mostly as
- 53:35they fall. The lava is like right behind them, and it doesn't really
- 53:39seem like they're outpacing it exactly. And I was sort of like, is
- 53:45did this really help? My god? I forgot about us up saying you're
- 53:50not really loopy, are you? You're some evil demon that wants to drag
- 53:54us down into the depths? Well, oh my god. But yeah,
- 54:02So eventually they go over another one because there's like multiple ledges here that they
- 54:13just sort of fall down the sides of, you know, and finally they're
- 54:21like floating free and the Kraken is holding them up. It made me think
- 54:25about how when they left the Skypeia area they were carried by a floating wasn't
- 54:35it a floating octopus in that case as well that was holding them. They
- 54:39get a lot of help from Giant octopuses, but yeah, the octopus is
- 54:45holding them up and keeping them out of the way of like all of the
- 54:49falling rocks. And it's just a very tense moment of everybody sort of watching
- 54:53this situation and like, are we could get got at any point by one
- 55:00of these landing on us Zoro asks Loofy to like help him fight this thing,
- 55:06and Robin has to step in and use her power to hold him in
- 55:10place, and she says, the ship is over eight thousand meters deep.
- 55:15If you go outside, the water pressure will crush you. Again, with
- 55:21the actual physics of things mattering in moments that I really didn't think we were
- 55:27going to care about that at all. I'm fine with it, you know,
- 55:31but it does feel very selective of like, well, we're gonna do
- 55:35that when I need you to stay on the ship and can't justify why you
- 55:39wouldn't jump off and do something otherwise. So Usup does special attack Green Star
- 55:50Sargasso is that how are you saying? I don't remember? But he shoots
- 55:53something out in and amongst the rocks, and it explodes with vines like a
- 56:00giant sea kelp, and it collects all the boulders and slows them down.
- 56:07It's actually a really cool idea to just be like, I can't stop them
- 56:12entirely, but I can buyas a little bit of additional time from it,
- 56:15you know. So they just barely managed to get away, and they all
- 56:24are cheering on this squid. You guys, he looks so happy. I'm
- 56:31way too much of a soft touch when it comes to animals. I know
- 56:35that this is why I have taken in puppies and now this kitten that's wandering
- 56:39around my office here. But yeah, the whole the expression on its face
- 56:49when it feels like it did a good job and then it like things begin
- 56:53to go wrong and it gets scared again. It just broke my heart.
- 56:59He looks so satisfied and pleased and proud, and then it all just went
- 57:06down the drain and he gets hit on the head with a rock and his
- 57:10eyes x out and he drops the ship and the ship just goes flying again.
- 57:15And I was like, oh, come on, man, let him
- 57:19have his moment for Christ's sake. I really was. I was so sad.
- 57:25But then it sort of transitions in this it's a weird moment because the
- 57:30ship sinks. He sinks, You just see them sort of disappearing down into
- 57:37the dark, and then all of a sudden there is this like transition to
- 57:42bright light, and it's not really like the way that it felt. It
- 57:47was almost like you got knocked out and woke up and the light was just
- 57:53going when you awoke. I'm not entirely sure if that's meant to be what
- 57:59sort of happened. If everybody on the ship was supposed to have, like,
- 58:02you know, been slammed to the deck and got knocked out, but
- 58:06the light becomes so bright that they can't even see anything, and you know
- 58:13this deep. They're ten thousand I think it's ten thousand meters. I'm not
- 58:16sure, but it's like deep enough that there shouldn't be like of this type
- 58:22down here at all. Brooke is even like, uh, are we dead?
- 58:25Like what's happening here? And you see some schools of fish there,
- 58:32much less chaotic than they have been in the other areas there are. There's
- 58:38just a sense of calm to this spot that there wasn't in the other places
- 58:44that they stumbled into. And Lufy sees something and he's like, wait,
- 58:51I think Nmi tell us and she has her log pose out and she's like,
- 58:55Yep, it's Fishman Island. It's pointing right there. And Fishman Island,
- 59:01unexpectedly is like a bubble underwater that looks like it has a sort of
- 59:08a spigot that comes out of it. I'm not really sure if that's the
- 59:15wording I want, but it looks like that's the entrance. It's just in
- 59:19proportion to the bubble. It looks so small, But I know it has
- 59:22to be big enough for the ship to pass through, and it's got to
- 59:27be some sort of like security measure, you know, to get in there.
- 59:30But I was really expecting Fishman Island to just be like open to the
- 59:36water, and that they were going to have to somehow get refreshing, like
- 59:42refresh the oxygen of their little suits to walk around. I didn't think that
- 59:46it was going to be like enclosed in a separate area with air, And
- 59:54I like, it makes sense, it would be very difficult to be animating
- 1:00:00them in those suits all the time, like, and the air replenishment wouldn't
- 1:00:06work. That wouldn't make any sense. But I just took it for granted
- 1:00:10that it was going to be something like under the sea in Little Mermaid.
- 1:00:15You know what I mean, or even in like Aquaman. So the fact
- 1:00:20that it is sort of a contained, I don't want to say, like
- 1:00:23a building. They call it a bubble, and it is, but that
- 1:00:29doesn't feel adequate for the size of the thing. But yeah, I just
- 1:00:32wasn't expecting it to look like this at all. And I'm gonna be really
- 1:00:37really curious how it differs inside from just looking like any of the other islands.
- 1:00:43Or maybe it won't. Maybe it will kind of look the same,
- 1:00:45and I'll forget that we're technically like underwater here, you know. But I
- 1:00:51am just Oda can be very very imaginative, so I am looking forward to
- 1:00:57seeing what he does with this. I think that's everything. Yeah, that's
- 1:01:02where the episode ends, is like all of them being like, oh shit,
- 1:01:06we finally got here, and loofy, it's just cheering and says,
- 1:01:10all right, we made it, and the Kraken is holding the ship up
- 1:01:17and cheering with them, and meanwhile inside his stupid barrel, Caribous saying,
- 1:01:24what do you know? The morons made it after all, And I was
- 1:01:29just like, they're the morons. You're the one inside of a barrel,
- 1:01:32sir. That's on you. I don't know who you think you're calling.
- 1:01:38Oh God. And then there's of course the Mermaid for you, A Mermaid
- 1:01:42for me with Sanjy and Brooke, and no, absolutely not. I have
- 1:01:49no interest there. They're clearly here, like we see them flying around,
- 1:01:54swimming around, and Sanji gets knocked out again and I would just like for him
